Madeline Brimley, new owner of a bookstore in a small Georgia town, finds herself playing sleuth when a friend is charged with the murder of a much-disliked woman.
Madeline Brimley recently inherited a bookstore in Enigma, Georgia, is embarking on her second career, after her first one (acting) founders upon the metaphorical rocks. Settling in, Madeline recruits her friend Gloria Coleman, the local Episcopal priest, to help her plant azaleas in the front yard of the old Victorian that houses the bookstore. Turning the soil, however, uncovers the body of one Beatrice Glassie, a troublesome woman who has been missing for the past six months.
When her friend Gloria is arrested for the murder, Madeline is determined to prove her innocence and, as she quickly finds out, there aren’t many people in town who hadn’t wanted to kill Bea Glassie at one point or another. And the very expensive and rare first edition of a particular volume of Grimm’s Fairy Tales—ordered by the victim and her sister is somehow tied to the grim death. With the help of her not-quite-boyfriend, a local lawman, and her deceased aunt’s best friend, Madeline plans to set a trap to catch the real murderer—before she becomes the next victim.
Dollycas’s Thoughts
We return to Enigma, Georgia, where Madeline Brimley has decided to plant some flowers in front of the bookstore she recently inherited from her Aunt Rose. Her friend, the local Episcopal priest, Gloria Coleman, is on hand to help her. They barely get started when they make a tragic discovery. They have found the body of Beatrice Glassie, who has been missing for about six months.
Madeline is shocked when Gloria is arrested for the murder. There is no way her friend killed Beatrice Glassie; she just needs to prove it. It appears that the woman had made a great many enemies over the years, including her own sister, Idell. Soon, Madeline, Rose’s closest friend and life companion, Dr. Philomenia Waldrop, and Madeline’s friend and gardener extraordinaire, David Madison, join together to help the hopefully soon-to-be sheriff, Billy Sanders, catch the real killer before they strike again.
It was nice to return to Enigma, Georgia, to catch up with Maddy, Phil, David, Jennifer, Gloria, and Billy. Madeline has settled in nicely and is starting to feel at home running the Old Juniper Bookshop. Jennifer is her able assistant for now, but has been offered a wonderful opportunity. Madeline’s relationship with David is happily starting to bloom. Philomenia has returned from her time away. Billy has set his sights on becoming sheriff. And Gloria finds herself in hot water. I enjoyed how comfortable these characters are and the way they pull together for each other. The author has allowed all the characters to develop in realistic ways, making them more engaging than in the first book.
The mystery was pretty straightforward, but Beatrice’s sister Idell made her opinions known and used her clout with the GBI to get Gloria arrested. The plot got a bit meandering at times, and a certain piece of evidence put the target on the killer’s back too early in the story, but I did enjoy following Maddy and Phil as they pursued each clue. Some of their endeavors were pretty comical. The sting set up to reel in the killer may have been a “deranged idea” and could have gone wrong in several ways, but it was very entertaining.
All My Bones is a charming addition to this series. A southern cozy mystery with appealing characters who continue to evolve, dashes of romance and humor, set in a unique bookshop that I would love to visit. Murder Unabridged will be released December 1, 2026. I am looking forward to my next trip to Enigma.
