Get bound up in murder in the first Lighthouse Library mystery!

For ten years Lucy has enjoyed her job poring over rare tomes of literature for the Harvard Library, but she has not enjoyed the demands of her family’s social whorl or her sort-of-engagement to the staid son of her father’s law partner. But when her ten-year relationship implodes, Lucy realizes that the plot of her life is in need of a serious rewrite.

Calling on her aunt Ellen, Lucy hopes that a little fun in the Outer Banks sun—and some confections from her cousin Josie’s bakery—will help clear her head. But her retreat quickly turns into an unexpected opportunity when Aunt Ellen gets her involved in the lighthouse library tucked away on Bodie Island.

Lucy is thrilled to land a librarian job in her favorite place in the world. But when a priceless first edition Jane Austen novel is stolen and the chair of the library board is murdered, Lucy suddenly finds herself ensnared in a real-life mystery—and she’s not so sure there’s going to be a happy ending…

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Two of my favorite things, libraries, and lighthouses, so when they are combined it really gets me excited.

Lucy Richardson is the newest librarian at The Bodie Island Lighthouse Library but her hiring has some people quite twitterpated. One thought the job should have been hers, others didn’t think the position was necessary, and even the head of the library board wants to get rid of her.  The head librarian and the staff at the library are thrilled to have her join them, especially with the Jane Austen exhibit and programs starting.

An event took place for friends of the library to see the exhibit before it was opened to the public. Just as Bertie, the head librarian, is ready to announce a special addition to the exhibit the head of the board is found dead. Because of his position to get rid of Lucy, she becomes a suspect but Bertie is the one that leaps to the top of the police’s list. Then one of the Austen novels goes missing.

Did Bertie remove the book to throw suspicion away from herself? Or is the real killer a thief too? Or are there 2 criminals on Bodie Island? Lucy hopes to close the book on the case by answering all those questions.

First, the author starts the book saying there would not be enough space in a real lighthouse to include all the books, staircases and rooms she has written into this book, so on the basis of the library’s structure the reader must suspend reality and I was fine with that. I just imagined a huge lighthouse, bigger than I have ever seen. Think of it  – each level has a special purpose. The main floor for the usual adult fiction and non-fiction with a special alcove and program areas. The next floor is filled with children’s books and programs. The third level for rare books, maps, etc. And the fourth floor a unique living space where Lucy has made herself at home. There is also a working lamp at the top. What a glorious setting with wonderful views! I would love to suspend the reality far enough to take me there.

Ms. Gates introduces us to fine characters. The library staff is made up of Bertie, Lucy, Ronald, the children’s librarian, Charlene, research librarian, and Charles, the library cat in residence. Lucy’s aunt, uncle, and cousin, along with the mayor, a nice detective and a not so nice detective round out what I assume will be the regular supporting cast. We also meet some unique friends of the library.  Some were easy to like, others took some warming up and others were written to be not very likable. The author did a great job with this cast.

The murder mystery was not easy to solve. There was an entire room of suspects with an opportunity to commit the crime. The missing book mystery was also difficult because it could have been anyone from library regulars to someone off a bus that brought tourists in for the Austen exhibit. The library really should have had some kind of security person watching over the priceless items, but I don’t think there ever imagined the number of people that would pass through their doors for this event. I had a certain library patron at the top of my list but it was just a feeling. As the proof was all revealed I was surprised I actually was right.

I enjoyed everything about this story. Thee characters were very engaging, the mystery was very well written, and the setting was to die for.

I am late to the party on this series, but I am going to get all caught up before the fourth installment, The Spook in the Stacks, comes out on June 12.

#Review / #Giveaway – Cinco de Murder (A Taste of Texas Mystery) by Rebecca Adler @BerkleyMystery

Cinco de Murder (A Taste of Texas Mystery)
Cozy Mystery
3rd in Series
Setting – Texas
Berkley (April 3, 2018)
Mass Market Paperback: 304 pages
ISBN-13: 978-0425275955

Tex-Mex waitress and part-time reporter Josie Callahan serves up more Lone Star justice in this spicy mystery from the author of The Good, the Bad, and the Guacamole.

It’s fiesta time in Broken Boot, Texas, and tourists are pouring into town faster than free beer at a bull roping for the mouthwatering Cinco de Mayo festivities. Tex-Mex waitress Josie Callahan, her feisty abuela, and even her spunky Chihuahua Lenny are polishing their folklórico dances for Saturday’s big parade, while Uncle Eddie is adding his own spicy event to the fiesta menu: Broken Boot’s First Annual Charity Chili Cook-off.

But Uncle Eddie’s hopes of impressing the town council goes up in smoke when cantankerous chili cook Lucky Straw is found dead in his tent. And when Josie’s beloved uncle is accused of fatal negligence, she, Lenny, and the steadfast Detective Lightfoot must uncover who ended the ambitious chilihead’s life–before another cook kicks the bucket.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

We arrive in Broken Boot just in time for their Cinco de Mayo celebration complete with a chili cook-off, parade, and fireworks. Josie Callahan, her aunt and a group of their friends with be doing a traditional dance – folklórico – during their part in the parade. Even Josie’s Chihuahua Lenny is getting in on the fun. Uncle Eddie is in charge of the chili cook-off hoping to prove to the town council that it should be an annual event.

Josie shows up to help him be sure everything is all set for the participants but one cook won’t be making a chili today, someone has sent Lucky Straw to the great chili cook-off in the sky. The mayor and the council are not happy with Eddie. Josie and Detective Lightfoot don’t have much time. They need to catch the killer before all the cooks pack up and head off to the next cook-off. Lenny is doing his best to help too!

All the favorite characters are back and they are joined by some cook-off cooks and judges from the International Chili Association. We meet them pretty quickly but they’re a pretty unique cast of characters. The author does a great job bringing them all together in this for this fun-filled mystery.

With all those characters there are plenty of suspects. Josie had a heck of time eliminating them from her list. It was a good time following along as she continued to change her mind about whodunit and her theories about the motive. With the weekend coming to a close and this reader getting near the end of her pages I was wondering if the mystery was going to be solved. Some dangerous crazy came together in the end and I will say I was scared for Josie and totally surprised.

Rebecca Adler’s penned a great story that was intriguing, entertaining and at times pretty amusing. There is a little spark of romance at the end, something I have been waiting for, so I am hoping and praying this will not be the last we see of these characters, but if it is the author left me with a huge smile on my face.

About the Author

Rebecca Adler grew up on the sugar beaches of the Florida Gulf Coast. Drawn to the Big Apple by the sweet smell of wishful thinking, she studied acting on Broadway until a dark-eyed cowboy flung her over his saddle and hightailed it to the Southwest.

Prior to writing women’s fiction, Gina always found a way to add a touch of the dramatic to her life: dinner theatre in Mississippi, can-can club in Florida, and playing a giant Furskin in the New York Toy Fair, plus the occasional play and musical.

She’s currently content to pour her melodramatic tendencies into writing her Taste of Texas culinary mystery series. Set in far West Texas, her humorous stories are filled with delicious suspense and scrumptious Tex-Mex recipes. Her alter ego, Gina Lee Nelson, writes sweet contemporary romances with a sweet, Southern-fried flavor.

It’s never a good time for a crisis. Toni’s busy whipping up gluten-free holiday treats when a murder forces her to put baking on the back burner. A dead man has been found in the bathtub of a local inn—in a room registered to her brother, Tim.

With her sibling now a prime suspect in a mysterious homicide, Toni is determined to find out who set him up. But she’s about to get some unwanted assistance from former investigative journalist Grandma Ruth, who won’t let anything slow her progress in running down a killer…

Dollycas’s Thoughts
Isn’t that cover wonderful??

Gluten-free bakery owner Toni Holmes is busy filling orders and serving walk-in customers. If she can sell enough cookies and cakes for the holidays she just may be able to get through the lack of sales when everyone goes on a diet in the new year. Her whole plan is turned inside out when a man is found dead in a hotel room registered to her brother Tim. She tried to stay out of the investigation, but when her brother is arrested Toni with a big push from her Grandma Ruth try to solve the murder themselves. At this point Toni decides sleep is overrated, she can bake and take down a killer. She’ll sleep after the holidays because by then her customers will be on that diet she has planned for anyway.

To Toni family is everything, but they do get to be a little much. She lives in a big Victorian house, she inherited with the stipulation that any family member could live there any time they needed to and bring their families. Her brother Tim had just moved out and into his own place, but her cousin Mindy has shown up without much explanation. Grandma Ruth lives in senior housing but she takes off on her scooter day or night, right down the middle of the road and drives herself right into the house. She also shows up at the bakery but Toni makes her leave the scooter outside. Toni would do anything for her family but she really needs a break.

Ms. Parra has created some very enjoyable characters. Grandma Ruth brings the humor and Toni tries to keep everyone and everything on track. The girl needs to learn to ask for help. I really love Toni, she smart and her passion for baking gluten-free treats has to be admired. My favorite character though is Grandma Ruth. I wish I had her spunk and energy.

The mystery is so well written. Finding the truth was difficult but Toni didn’t give up. Circumstantial evidence was overwhelming and it was puzzling to try to determine whodunit and why Tim was being framed.

I spent my entire Sunday afternoon glued to these pages, but the ending for me was bittersweet. The story was entertaining and interesting but I hated to reach the last page because I knew it would be the last time I would be reading about these characters. I don’t think the author was done writing about them either but one of the pitfalls in the publishing world is series’ we love ending too soon. I really enjoyed the time I was able to spend with Toni and her family.

#Review / #Giveaway – A Brush with Shadows (A Lady Darby Mystery) by Anna Lee Huber @BerkleyMystery

A Brush with Shadows (A Lady Darby Mystery)
Historical Cozy Mystery
6th in Series
Setting – Dartmoor, England
Berkley (March 6, 2018)
Paperback: 384 pages
ISBN-13: 978-0399587221
Kindle ASIN: B071X2K1DY

July 1831. It’s been fifteen years since Sebastian Gage has set foot in Langstone Manor. Though he has shared little with his wife, Lady Kiera Darby, about his past, she knows that he planned never to return to the place of so many unhappy childhood memories. But when an urgent letter from his grandfather reaches them in Dublin, Ireland, and begs Gage to visit, Kiera convinces him to go.

All is not well at Langstone Manor. Gage’s grandfather, the Viscount Tavistock, is gravely ill, and Gage’s cousin Alfred has suddenly vanished. He wandered out into the moors and never returned. The Viscount is convinced someone or something other than the natural hazards of the moors is to blame for Alfred’s disappearance. And when Alfred’s brother Rory goes missing, Kiera and Gage must concede he may be right. Now, they must face the ghosts of Gage’s past, discover the truth behind the local superstitions, and see beyond the tricks being played by their very own eyes to expose what has happened to Gage’s family before the moors claim yet another victim…

Dollycas’s Thoughts

I have been anxiously awaiting this book after the little teaser the author left us with at the end of As Death Draws Near, but it was definitely worth the wait.

Gage takes Kiera to his home, Langstone Manor. A place he hasn’t been since his mother’s death 15 years ago. His grandfather has summoned him to get there as fast as possible but the trip from Ireland took a little time. They arrive to find the Viscount Tavistock, deathly ill and his heir, Gage’s cousin, Alfred missing. Not sure if has been injured or killed out on the moors, or if he has been kidnapped, or just took off all on his own, his grandfather demands Gage find him. Then Alfred’s brother Rory disappears too. Gage and Kiera step up their investigation to find both men. Could their disappearance have something to do with the past? It is said, Langstone Manor is cursed. Gage vows to find the men and the truth.

Another fantastic story from Anna Lee Huber. The cover of this book is breathtaking too.

Ms. Huber returns with Kiera and Gage and the servants Bree and Anderley in a story so well written filled with vivid imagery. It is so easy to imagine being in the dark and dim castle or out on the moors or on horseback through the countryside.

Gage himself has been a mystery so I truly enjoyed learning about his past and what shaped him into the man he is now. All of Ms. Huber’s stories are very character driven and to peel away some of Gage’s layers was delightful.

Kiera is a little nervous to meet Gage’s relatives, but over the years she has learned to cope with those who judge her by her past. She quickly takes every opportunity to spend time with the Viscount. Even sitting at his bedside with her sketchbook while he slumbers to give the servants a break.

Gage and Kiera are a wonderful couple, they love and trust each other and are equals, something very strange for this time period.

Searching for the missing cousins takes our lead characters visiting neighbors and Bree and Anderley trying to get information from the staff. The author draws readers into the mystery quickly. Searching the vastness of the moors seems impossible, so it was important to look for other clues. Clues at first that were confusing to me as much as Gage and Keira. The twist that revealed what was really happening absolutely shocked me. Wow! I didn’t see that coming at all.

Anna Lee Huber is an amazing storyteller. She paints pictures with her words that allow readers to escape fully into her stories. She continues to surpass my expectations. The plotlines are tight, the dialogue is stellar, and her characters leap off the pages.

Each story stands on its own, but the Lady Darby mysteries are best enjoyed from the beginning to witness the character development and world building.

This book received my Paradise Rating because it deserves more than 5 stars. The is a book not to be missed.

The third in a delicious series featuring a dinner club that tries out new recipes–while trying to catch a killer

The Culinary Capers Dinner Club is planning a fall picnic for their next meeting. What could be better than sharing delicious food with friends under a beautiful autumn sky? But when club member Alison Malkovich opens the back of her SUV to load in the picnic supplies, she finds a dead body. To make things worse, it’s the body of her ex-husband, and now she’s the prime suspect. Because Alison is a police officer, she is suspended and warned not to do any investigating of her own. That’s not about to stop J.J. and the Culinary Capers gang though. They know that Alison is innocent, and after all, they do have some experience solving crimes.

INCLUDES DELICIOUS RECIPES

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Nothing can ruin a picnic quicker than a dead body, especially when it is an estranged husband found in his wife’s SUV. Police officer Alison Malkovich just wanted to load the coolers but now instead investigating a murder, she is the prime suspect. Will her fellow officers have her back or will she need her Culinary Caper Club members to prove her innocence?

Having recently read Roux the Day it was fun to revisit these characters so soon.  Alison had been pretty quiet about her personal life and her friends were pretty surprised when she had to fill them in on everything. They focused quickly on the new suspect that was brought to light, but she seemed to have an alibi. Private Eye Ty Devine has agreed to work with J.J. on the case both because he wants to help Alison but he also wants to spend time with J.J. He is not happy when she agrees to go on a date to get information, especially when it is followed by another date. J.J. is also confused about her feelings for both men.

Linda Wiken has given us such strong characters. I love the way they are still getting to know each other and have each other’s back no matter what. The club has a nice variety of cooks and bakers from expert to novice and the cookbooks and recipes never fail to make my stomach growl. Like J.J. I love the cookbooks with all the beautiful pictures. Skye and J.J. have many events coming up at “Make It Happen” but it is the perfect job for J.J. because she sets her own hours and has a boss/friend that understands her sleuthing on the side. The whole group are fun and very engaging.

I really enjoyed the way the author had J.J. seeing both men while trying to find the killer. It added not only romantic tension but excitement to the story. It did seem though at times J.J. was rehashing the same thing over and over again. She kept meeting with people to try to get them to answer questions I thought they had already answered. Sometimes it revealed a new tidbit, but other times she was just seemed to be spinning her wheels. Maybe she was just trying to sort out her feelings about this new man in her life. I felt I had a clear picture of the guilty party early on but was truly surprised by the way the story ended.

Another fine culinary cozy from this author. I hope we get to visit this group of characters again very soon.
