Rachel wakes up, gasping for breath, and immediately knows her children are in danger. The scent of magnolias is heavy in the air, which means the Collector is coming…
Schoolteacher Rachel Logan is living an ordinary life in a small community at the foot of the Rocky Mountains. As a single mother still reeling from the sudden death of her husband, she refuses to allow her life to be shaken by whispers of a local thief called the Collector. But when a little boy and girl are taken, everything changes.
On her isolated ranch on the edge of the forest, Rachel feels someone is watching her. The scent of magnolias clings to her bedsheets each morning, which her family’s gift tells her is a bad omen. And when a photograph is stolen from her house with a tarot card left in its place—the Collector’s twisted signature—she knows her children will be his next victims.
Terrified, Rachel is relieved when her husband’s best friend Hank offers to move in to protect her family. Especially because she can feel something dark stirring in the woods just beyond her ranch. But it soon becomes clear that the Collector isn’t after her children, and has instead set his sights on Rachel…
Can Rachel outwit an unimaginable evil before time runs out for two innocent children? And even if she does manage to save their lives, can a monster like the Collector ever be stopped?
Dollycas’s Thoughts
Rachel Logan knows danger is near when the scent of magnolias is everywhere. It’s a family gift. A sign of a bad omen. She has heard about The Collector, a local thief who has now upped his game. He is now taking children. A little boy and a little girl. Now a photograph has been taken from her house and The Collector has left his calling card. Will he come back for her children? or is he really after her?
Ms. Webb has introduced strong characters in the first book in this series. Rachel Logan is a widow with two small children and a schoolteacher. She has a unique warning system associated with her mother and the Deep South. The sweet smell of magnolias has only been present at two other times in her life until now, when her parents died in a horrible car crash, and then 3 years ago when her husband died on the battlefield in service of his country. Rachel lives with her grandmother. She is a fierce strong-willed woman and will go to great lengths to protect Rachel and her children. Hank Carson was Rachel’s husband’s best friend and has moved nearby from Texas to watch over her and her family. These characters are well-crafted and it is very easy to get caught up in their lives.
The Collector is lurking everywhere with his disturbing rituals, tarot cards, and his eerie plan. A true psychopath, and readers get right into his head. The story pulls you in with chilling twists and thrilling details. Rachel impressed me with the way she was able to think on her feet and do her best while panicking on the inside. Her resilience was palpable. I figured out some things before they were presented in the story but that only enhanced my reading. I needed to know if I was right and how it was going to play out as the story continued. The story was intense throughout but the pages were really flying those last few chapters. Ms. Webb’s writing style is gripping.
Rachel’s sisters Jen and Annie make cameos in this story. The second book in the series, Taken in the Dark features the older sister Jen. Readers are treated to a prologue at the end of this book, it had my heart racing. It will be released on June 4, 2024.
Black Crow Cabin is a riveting read and a compelling start for this series. The tension builds right from the start and does not let up. I would have read it all in one sitting had my eyes cooperated. It was a very nightmarish Perfect Escape.
