Nothing disrupts a celebration quite like an uninvited corpse.

Adina already knows the city can be a dangerous place. That’s why she’s looking forward to a stress-free weekend in rural Pennsylvania with her favorite detective. Maybe not all that stress-free. They are attending an engagement party and Adina will be meeting Jonathan’s family for the first time.

Except the holiday weekend takes a deadly turn when leading industrialists, a hard-core environmentalist, and a bevy of wealthy partygoers converge on the Riverfront Lodge, and the couple stumbles upon yet another dead body. Drawn into the ensuing investigation, making a good impression on Jonathan’s parents is the least of her worries.

A standalone novella, Dead amid the Dogwoods is the fifth mystery in the Adina Donati, Accidental Sleuth Series.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Adina and Jonathan leave the fast pace of D.C. behind for an engagement party for his brother and bride to be in rural Pennsylvania. But even with a trip to Hershey Park and the party they still have time to find a body and get mixed up in the investigation.

I am so happy that Adina and Jonathan finally got some alone time and that she was able to meet his family and that they welcomed her with open arms. They could quickly see that she was a strong, smart woman and the perfect partner for their son/brother. Again, the main characters were surrounded by unique characters that developed quickly before our eyes.

The mystery was so interesting because there were two big events at the venue where the murder occurred and people at both events had a variety of connections, misdeeds, and secrets. Jonathan was reluctantly asked to assist on the case because of his background in solving homicides which allowed him to sit in on some of the interviews with suspects. He did not sit on the one with his brother’s future father-in-law though. Adina found herself in the right places at the right time to do a little sleuthing too. But it would be one key piece of evidence that would reveal the killer.

I loved that the family took a little side trip to Hershey. We had a family vacation run through there several years ago so it was very easy for me to understand the variety and plentiful purchases made at the gift shop. It truly is a great place to visit for all ages. I would love to take my grandchildren there someday. I will pass on the bit of trouble these characters ran into there, but it did allow for another trip to the gift shop.

Dead Amid the Dogwoods has a wonderful balance between mystery and family. A quick read, I enjoyed every page. I am looking forward to the next book in this series to see what Ms. Salem has in store for her characters next.

Fit For Murder (Adina Donati, Accidental Sleuth) by Cassidy Salem #Review

Fit For Murder (Adina Donati, Accidental Sleuth)
Cozy Mystery
4th in Series
Setting – Washington D.C.
‎Independently published (October 6, 2019)
Paperback ‏ : ‎ 193 pages
ISBN-10 ‏ : ‎ 1695022653
ISBN-13 ‏ : ‎ 978-1695022652

Exercise is good for you, or so they said. So why is the Pilates instructor dead?

Adina signed up for Pilates because she wanted to get some exercise, not to find another body. Initially ruled an accidental death, the victim’s business partner has her doubts, which are soon reinforced by a series of suspicious incidents. With no obvious motives or suspects, Adina sets out to identify the killer – with or without help from her favorite detective.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Adina is back and her roommate and “fitness freak” Lynda has talked her into trying pilates. The new gym Fun & Fitness just opened and it is near their home and Cutie Pie Rescue where she volunteers and walks dogs so maybe this class won’t be so bad. Adina is ready to snap some pictures of a new pooch at the rescue but realizes she doesn’t have her phone. Backtracking she and Lynda head back to Fun & Fitness to look for her phone. On their arrival, the phone is forgotten when they find their pilates instructor, Bonnie, on the floor unconscious with her face red and swollen and a bottle of water by her side. They also find the instructor’s phone with an open call to 911. So Bonnie knew something was wrong and tried to get help. Adina and Lynda learn the next day that Bonnie died. Police have it classified as accidental but her business partner and co-owner of the gym Piper, doesn’t believe it was.

With Bonnie gone and Piper with a new baby at home, huge adjustments need to be made at Fun & Fitness. Adina volunteers to help in any way she can and she also decides to do her thing and find out what really happened to Bonnie. Her favorite detective has a lot on his plate with working at the Metro Police Department and studying for his master’s in criminology at Georgetown so he and Adina aren’t spending much time together but she will fill him in on everything when they finally meet face to face. That is if she doesn’t get in trouble before then.

Adina is a strong, independent woman and she is a terrific amateur sleuth, which is a good thing because she does keep finding dead bodies. She has a huge heart. She volunteers at a pet rescue and recently adopted a pup of her own, Bonzo, and convinced her neighbor to adopt one too, Speckles. She also didn’t think twice about helping Piper after Bonnie’s death. Both women she just met but she automatically felt compelled to help. Of course, helping Piper meant she would get to check out the business’s files, Bonnie’s computer, and her home to try to find any clues that could lead to a killer. There was a big bonus too, she was able to meet Bonnie’s boxer named Harley and share caretaking duties with Piper’s husband Noah.

Ms. Salem surrounds Adina with strong characters like herself in her roommates and Joan the driving force behind Cutie Pie Rescue. Her relationship with Jonathan is progressing nicely but he plays a small role in this story. I do love all the characters she has created for large roles or small, human and canine. It is a diverse cast with believable lives and they all have a purpose in the story. The dialogues all ring true too.

This author also knows how to write a complex compelling mystery in less than 200 pages. She has each scene so well-plotted. It is uncanny the way Adina finds one clue after another that others just don’t see. I thought I had the killer firm in my mind and then there was a twist that as the author intended drew my attention away from that person. Then she twisted things all up again and I was chasing new leads right along with Adina. I really enjoy mysteries that make me think and Cassidy Salem’s stories always do that.

Fit For Murder features a protagonist with a “gift”. A gift that just keeps on giving and that has pulled me into every book in this series. Each book in this series can be read all on its but they are even better read in order. I am really excited to read Dead Amid the Dogwoods which is available now!

#Review / #Giveaway – Killer Reputation (Adina Donati, Accidental Sleuth) by Cassidy Salem – Great Escapes Book Tour

Self Published (June 15, 2018)

Adina can’t resist snooping when someone she knows turns up dead. Again.

When a colleague at a prestigious think tank meets a violent death, Adina’s not convinced any of the obvious suspects disliked him enough to want him dead. Can the young research assistant, a quirky neighbor, and a lovable rescue pup help the police put together the pieces of the puzzle?

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Adina Donati is back and she is involved in solving another murder. A work colleague who also lives nearby has been killed and her detective boyfriend is away for training so his boss is in charge. Adina thinks he is may not be getting the full picture. As she uncovers info she tries to share with him but he is not happy about her interference. A key clue is found that brings everything into focus and again Adina is on the scene.

Adina is a grand protagonist, works for a D.C. think tank and volunteers at an animal rescue. I love that she now has a dog and has convinced her neighbor to foster a fantastic dog too. She now has two housemates and I was delighted to meet them. Her neighbor is an elderly man that watches over the neighborhood. Adina gets to know him better with a tragic event and the following murder. I enjoy the friendship they are building.

Cassidy Salem has wrapped her characters in a very interesting mystery, it could have gone in several directions. The twists were great and I loved the way it played out.  She packs so much into just 182 pages and it is easily read in an afternoon.

Even though this is the 3rd story in this series it can be read on its own. I also believe we have just scratched the surface on these characters. I am excited about the next installment.

Synopsis

Bad karma, a rival suitor, and a deadly attack are enough to put a damper on any date.

Just when Adina’s social life is looking up, her night out is interrupted by the scream of police sirens. Afraid her bartender boyfriend might be accused of murder, Adina’s neighbor enlists her assistance, and in the process exposes her to the seamier side of illegal immigration and crime in the city. Hard as she tries to limit her involvement, the more Adina learns, the more she needs to know – until a case of mistaken identity lands her in hot water. Will she uncover the truth before it’s too late?

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Cassidy Salem packs a punch into these 175 pages and once you start you won’t be able to stop reading.

This story could gone entirely in a different direction and into the thriller genre as the author takes on some current hot topics, but she stayed well within the cozy realm. I was very impressed at the way she did that.

This was my first experience meeting Adina Donati, I missed out of the first book of this series, Think Murder but enough background was given that I had no trouble catching up. Adina volunteers at an animal shelter and works for a D.C. think tank. She has not one, but two men interested in her, but she is definitely feeling for one more than the other as she gets to know them better. She also finds herself in the middle of an investigation when her neighbor’s boyfriend is the prime suspect in a murder. She has only just met the boyfriend but has gotten to be friends with her neighbor and is unable to say no when they beg for her help.

The plot was intense with several twists, and when clues and answers started to fall into place everything was wrapped up quickly. Almost a little to quickly for me. I wanted more so I am very anxious for Book #3. In the meantime I have added Think Murder to my To-Be-Read stack so I can find out how Adina’s story started.

If you are looking for a quick entertaining read, I recommend you try Dying For Data, but if you get the chance read both. 🙂

enjoyable 2016
