Tarsey Quinston and her husband Steve are excited about moving to their new home in the picturesque community of Bluffington Hills. It turns out the neighborhood isn’t as idyllic as they hoped. Mystery overshadows the community with quirky neighbors, an angry property manager, and the suspicious death of the town seamstress. With a nudge from her cat, Tarsey feels compelled to find out what happened with the unsolved case. As the layers of perfection are peeled away and drama within the Homeowners Association causes uproar, the property manager and Tarsey’s cat suddenly go missing. Now desperate to find her beloved pet, Tarsey must solve the mystery of what happened to all three of them before there is a CATastrophic situation!
Dollycas’s Thoughts
Bluffington Hills is a beautiful community with a lot of amenities. Tarsey Quinston and her husband Steve decide to purchase a home on Climbing Rose Lane but before they are there a week they start to rethink that decision. The property manager, Minnie Waffenberg, rolls up on her Segway to fine them for not putting their trash cans away fast enough. That and a few other issues have Tarsey and Steve attending the next HOA meeting and it doesn’t go well. A drunk president, two members that don’t want to be there, and the overbearing property manager don’t even know how to run a meeting much less manage a community. Other than a fantastic house and the perk that they can keep the cat that became theirs just before they left their old apartment, living in Bluffington Hills may be more trouble than it’s worth.
When Tarsey learns about the death of a local seamstress, Felicity Irrington, who had a cat that looked just like their new one, she feels like she needs to learn more about her and her unsolved case. Shortly thereafter, her cat and property manager Minnie go missing. With three mysteries to solve Tarsey has her hands full. It seems Bluffington Hills may really be a A CATastrophic Neighborhood.
Ms. Shanesy has created characters that are true to life. I liked Tarsey. She works for a small charity nonprofit. Her hobbies include sewing and gardening. Her husband Steve is an attorney working in the prosecutor’s office. The lease on their loft apartment is almost up and they are starting to think about having children so a move makes sense. They check out Bluffington Hills and attend a happy hour event where they meet some of their prospective neighbors. The neighbors were friendly except for the property manager. So they take the plunge. I did enjoy meeting all the neighbors. Pretty similar to what you would find in any small town. The nice people you want to get to know and then the few you want to avoid. The author did a good job bringing them all to life while leaving a lot of room for them to continue to develop as the series continues.
The author takes time to introduce all the characters before any mystery comes to light and even then it takes a while before Tarsey starts to draw any attention as she and her friends start “investigating”. Throughout the story, Silver, the cat, plays a key role. I found this quite interesting especially as a rescue takes a dangerous turn. I am very intrigued by what the author has planned for this curious cat because I think we have just scratched the surface.
A CATastrophic Neighborhood is the first Pet Momma Cozy Mystery and has set this series off to a nice start. It was a fun read that left me wanting to know the people of Bluffington Hills better.
