It’s time to SAY CHEESE!! because Avery Aames is my guest today!!
As I ramp up for the release of As Gouda as Dead next week, all I can think about are easy things to pop into my mouth to keep my energy going. Little snacks. Mid-morning. Midday. You probably don’t realize how much publicity authors have to do to promote a book. Lots! Blogs, book sigings, social networking, giveaways, newsletters! It’s enough to make me want to give up writing… NOT. I couldn’t. I can’t. I have to write. There are too many characters in my head. They keep popping up. And stories. So many stories. So to write, I must eat!! Sigh. A girl’s gotta do what a girl’s gotta do. I sacrifice. 🙂
This is perhaps my all-time favorite comfort-food appetizer. It simply melts in your mouth. The wine adds just a hint of a kick! For a gluten-free option, which I make for myself, I use gluten-free pasta and gluten-free bread crumbs. Everything else is good to go! Say cheese!
P.S. Timothy O’Shea’s Irish Pub, which is the fictional “origin” for this recipe, is featured in As Gouda as Dead.
MACARONI AND CHEESE APPETIZER
À la Timothy O’Shea’s Irish Pub
(Serves 4)
2 cup dried macaroni, cooked to tender (about 4-5 cups cooked)
1 clove garlic chopped
4 tablespoons butter
3/4 cup milk
1/4 cup white wine
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon white pepper
1/2 teaspoon paprika
1 1/2 tablespoons cornstarch
½ cup mascarpone cheese
1 cup grated cheese (equal parts Cheddars, Gouda, Monterey Jack)
1/4 cup bread crumbs
1/4 cup Parmesan cheese
Cook macaroni according to package directions. Drain and set aside. Pasta may be made a day ahead. Note: Do not forget to drain and set aside. You do not want the pasta to be “wet.”
In a large saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add garlic, salt, pepper, paprika, and cornstarch. Cook about 1-2 minutes. It will boil and thicken. Stir constantly.
Add milk and wine, stir, and let boil to thicken.
Remove from heat and add mascarpone cheese and grated cheeses.
Pour sauce over drained macaroni. Stir well. Fill 6-8 appetizer-sized ramekins with the mixture. Top with bread crumbs mixed with the Parmesan cheese.
Turn oven on to broil. Set the ramekins about 4 inches under broiler. Broil for 5-6 minutes until crisp.
Serve hot.
Enjoy!

Someone is cheesed off . . .
Providence, Ohio, is celebrating Valentine’s Day with weeklong events, including lovers’ baskets with heart-shaped cheeses at Fromagerie Bessette. Charlotte Bessette is celebrating by finally walking down the aisle with the man of her dreams, handsome artisanal cheese farmer, Jordan Pace. But when a beloved bar owner is discovered murdered on Jordan’s farm, he believes they should reschedule their wedding given the grim turn of events.
Charlotte is heartsick over the postponement. This killer crossed the wrong woman. No one, but no one, is ruining her wedding plans!
Dollycas’s Thoughts
Providence, Ohio is the place for lovers in this 6th installment of the spectacular series.
But murder plays havoc with a certain couples plans and they are not taking it laying down. Charlotte is very determined to catch the killer and get her plans back on track!
Avery Aames continues to make this series better and better. We have Charlotte’s crazy bachelorette party, all the shops are doing something special for Lover’s Trail Festival, the Providence Players are performing Love Letters, and there are several weddings planned. Nothing in the planned events included a murder! But before Charlotte’s party ends a phone message changes everyone’s plans.
All our favorite characters are back and they are all busy as can be. Charlotte’s assistant, Rebecca, is even trying out for the play as is Deputy Devon O’Shea. The mayor, Charlotte’s grandmother, is directing the play and heading up all the festival plans. Fromagerie Bessette is hosting a special wine and cheese tasting. There is also a crazy woman filing complaints about noise pollution and running around town threatening people. Through it all Charlotte and Jordan just wanted a happy wedding day and then they went and found that dead body.
Readers like me have been looking forward to this wedding too so I really wanted this culprit caught so the happy couple could start their years of wedded bliss together without a murder investigation to hold them back. I was amazed at the number of suspects and as each one was crossed off the list I was wondering what we were missing right along with Charlotte. The pages of this book were flying.
The author has a gift. She blends her vivid descriptions of the most yummy cheeses, seriously you can almost taste them, with a mystery that is so vivid it almost jumps off the page. The chapters are like potato chips, you can’t read/eat just one. I gobbled up As Gouda as Dead and now I am ready for some more please!
