cozy wednesday 2013 640Welcome to Cozy Wednesday!

It’s time to SAY CHEESE!! because Avery Aames is my guest today!!

Daryl Wood Gerber 0218 100dpi

As I ramp up for the release of As Gouda as Dead next week, all I can think about are easy things to pop into my mouth to keep my energy going. Little snacks. Mid-morning. Midday. You probably don’t realize how much publicity authors have to do to promote a book. Lots! Blogs, book sigings, social networking, giveaways, newsletters! It’s enough to make me want to give up writing… NOT. I couldn’t. I can’t. I have to write. There are too many characters in my head. They keep popping up. And stories. So many stories. So to write, I must eat!! Sigh. A girl’s gotta do what a girl’s gotta do. I sacrifice. 🙂

gouda as deadThis is perhaps my all-time favorite comfort-food appetizer. It simply melts in your mouth. The wine adds just a hint of a kick! For a gluten-free option, which I make for myself, I use gluten-free pasta and gluten-free bread crumbs. Everything else is good to go! Say cheese!

P.S. Timothy O’Shea’s Irish Pub, which is the fictional “origin” for this recipe, is featured in As Gouda as Dead.

IMG_2656MACARONI AND CHEESE APPETIZER
À la Timothy O’Shea’s Irish Pub

(Serves 4)

2 cup dried macaroni, cooked to tender (about 4-5 cups cooked)
1 clove garlic chopped
4 tablespoons butter
3/4 cup milk
1/4 cup white wine
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon white pepper
1/2 teaspoon paprika
1 1/2 tablespoons cornstarch
½ cup mascarpone cheese
1 cup grated cheese (equal parts Cheddars, Gouda, Monterey Jack)
1/4 cup bread crumbs
1/4 cup Parmesan cheese

Cook macaroni according to package directions. Drain and set aside. Pasta may be made a day ahead. Note: Do not forget to drain and set aside. You do not want the pasta to be “wet.”

In a large saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add garlic, salt, pepper, paprika, and cornstarch. Cook about 1-2 minutes. It will boil and thicken. Stir constantly.

Add milk and wine, stir, and let boil to thicken.

Remove from heat and add mascarpone cheese and grated cheeses.

Pour sauce over drained macaroni. Stir well. Fill 6-8 appetizer-sized ramekins with the mixture. Top with bread crumbs mixed with the Parmesan cheese.

Turn oven on to broil. Set the ramekins about 4 inches under broiler. Broil for 5-6 minutes until crisp.

Serve hot.

Enjoy!

Someone is cheesed off . . .

Providence, Ohio, is celebrating Valentine’s Day with weeklong events, including lovers’ baskets with heart-shaped cheeses at Fromagerie Bessette. Charlotte Bessette is celebrating by finally walking down the aisle with the man of her dreams, handsome artisanal cheese farmer, Jordan Pace. But when a beloved bar owner is discovered murdered on Jordan’s farm, he believes they should reschedule their wedding given the grim turn of events.

Charlotte is heartsick over the postponement. This killer crossed the wrong woman. No one, but no one, is ruining her wedding plans!

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Providence, Ohio is the place for lovers in this 6th installment of the spectacular series.

But murder plays havoc with a certain couples plans and they are not taking it laying down. Charlotte is very determined to catch the killer and get her plans back on track!

Avery Aames continues to make this series better and better. We have Charlotte’s crazy bachelorette party, all the shops are doing something special for Lover’s Trail Festival, the Providence Players are performing Love Letters, and there are several weddings planned. Nothing in the planned events included a murder! But before Charlotte’s party ends a phone message changes everyone’s plans.

All our favorite characters are back and they are all busy as can be. Charlotte’s assistant, Rebecca, is even trying out for the play as is Deputy Devon O’Shea. The mayor, Charlotte’s grandmother, is directing the play and heading up all the festival plans. Fromagerie Bessette is hosting a special wine and cheese tasting.  There is also a crazy woman filing complaints about noise pollution and running around town threatening people. Through it all Charlotte and Jordan just wanted a happy wedding day and then they went and found that dead body.

Readers like me have been looking forward to this wedding too so I really wanted this culprit caught so the happy couple could start their years of wedded bliss together without a murder investigation to hold them back. I was amazed at the number of suspects and as each one was crossed off the list I was  wondering what we were missing right along with Charlotte. The pages of this book were flying.

The author has a gift. She blends her vivid descriptions of the most yummy cheeses, seriously you can almost taste them, with a mystery that is so vivid it almost jumps off the page. The chapters are like potato chips, you can’t read/eat just one. I gobbled up As Gouda as Dead and now I am ready for some more please!

WHERE CAN YOU Escape?

By Avery Aames aka Daryl Wood Gerber

Daryl Wood Gerber 0218 100dpiWhere can you escape to when you have a new puppy and a husband who consults from home? An island, please!  LOL

Sometimes it takes a vivid imagination.

For a long time, I was carving out a space in my bedroom, right by the window, where I could take my computer and write to my heart’s content. Total privacy. Lovely. A hummingbird would visit daily and flutter above the agapanthus flowers. I could open the door and hear a lovely waterfall.

But life changed when I got a new puppy. We are leash-training the puppy, so we have restricted the house to the den and kitchen. Gates everywhere. My husband—love him to pieces—is not into training the dog in the way that I am. I am definitely the alpha dog. That means I have to stay in the den and kitchen. Where the dog and my husband are. [During the holidays, we had lots of family, too.  Yipes!]

days of wine and roquefortAdding a puppy to our happy household has changed the whole pattern of how and when I write. Yes, I have a window in the kitchen, and I can still see plants and birds. But there is noise all the time. My husband consults on sports so he’s always watching a sports program on the TV. The dog demands attention. Up down, up down, up down. Go out, come back in. Feed me!!

So…I have learned to write in shorter spurts—I write when the dog sleeps. I have learned to put in my earphones and turn on my music to block out the sports—I have a mix-up of some wonderful instrumental music, everything from Latin to classical. At times I play music that makes me think of being on a faraway island (tropical with tortoise shell music and possibly the sound of the sea; can you hear it?). At times I set my table with food (cheese, chocolate) to inspire me. Okay, true confession: yes, I had cheese and chocolate at my writing table in my bedroom, too.

Changing a pattern is a challenge, but I love a challenge. And I love my puppy and husband.

Where do you escape to when you need an immediate vacation?

Murder, like Roquefort, stinks…

Cheese Shop owner Charlotte Bessette’s life seems quieter than ever with her fiancé out of town and her cousin Matthew and his children out of the house. But before she can put up her feet and enjoy a glass of chardonnay, Matthew asks her to play host to Noelle Adams, a bright sommelier visiting to help grow business for the local winery.

An affable wine aficionado, Noelle is paired well with the cheese expert Charlotte—but something seems to be troubling the secretive houseguest, and Charlotte’s life is upended when she finds the sparkling woman dead. Between Noelle’s hotheaded ex, the cagey owners of the winery, its jaded manager, and a wily reporter, Charlotte has her pick of suspects, but she needs to act fast—this is a mystery that only gets more dangerous with age.

RECIPES INCLUDED!

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Warning this book will make you very hungry for CHEESE!!! Do yourself a favor and pick some up with some crackers and a bottle of wine before you start reading!!!

I love Charlotte’s family.  They are always busy whether is be at Fromagerie Bessette, or directing the community play or finding a killer. There is never a dull moment. The Cheese Shop is really a gathering place and most residents of this small Ohio town stop there at least once a week. It is also a hot tourist stop. In this installment one of those visitors just happens to be a murderer.

Charlotte’s assistant just cracks me up as she tries to help Charlotte find the killer. You see she has a vast knowledge of criminal behavior and crime solving from her hours of watching television shows. Her heart is in the right place and sometimes she does come up with a valid point but she does much better keeping the Cheese Shop in order.

Avery writes a very tasty mystery for all of us to enjoy.  I always want to savor her stories like a glass of fine wine but I just can’t. She grabs us from the start and pulls us in and before you know it you are at the last page and checking out the recipes. There were unexpected twists, plenty of suspects, and general good sleuthing to track down all the clues. There was also a nice balance of humor.

But the cheese, oh my, the cheese!! In between the lines of this wonderful mystery are descriptions of so many varieties of cheese. I want to try them all. Be prepared to make a list. I bet the author loves the research part of writing these mysteries. When she says “SAY CHEESE” she means it.

Say Cheese!!!! I am so thrilled  Avery Aames is visiting today. You know how we love our cheese in Wisconsin! Avery writes the Cheese Shop Mysteries and besides the wonderful mystery I just love all the cheese information and recipes. Today I am sharing a virtual tray with Wisconsin made Linderkranz cheese, some dried apricots and a little rye bread. (My dad was a Borden’s milkman for years and this cheese used to be a treat at our house.) I am sure Charlotte, the star of this series, would know the perfect wine to go with this yummy cheese, but around here a nice dark beer is our usual complimenting beverage. Please help yourselves and relax and enjoy Avery’s post.

Welcome Avery!

Thank you, Lori, for inviting me to talk about the third in A Cheese Shop Mystery, Clobbered by Camembert.

I know this might sound cheese-y, but I’m truly thrilled to write about cheese. I have a love affair with it. I didn’t. Before writing this series, I had tasted the usual suspects: Cheddar, Monterey Jack, Swiss. But then I started to do research, and I’ve fallen head-over-heels with cheeses with names like: Délice de Bourgogne and Hook’s Five-Year Cheddar and Abbaye de Bellocq. Aren’t these heavenly and unusual names?

It’s such a joy to write about food. I love to cook, to explore. I blog about food on Mystery Lovers Kitchen with a number of other foodie authors, and we have so much fun.

Often people ask if my protagonist, Charlotte, a cheese shop owner, is like me. Actually, the answer is yes. She’s much younger and single (for now), but like me, she’s impulsive, caring, and a fixer by nature. She can’t stand on the sidelines. She has to dig in and make things right. It gets her in trouble [It often gets me in trouble, too]. I don’t like to see the underdog suffer. And I really care about my community: my family, my friends, my city and country. Would I ever be a cheesemonger? I’m not sure about that. I think running a business would be so difficult. You have to consider the customers, the purchasing, the state of the store, taxes, disability insurance, and so much more. My hat goes off to people who continue to start new businesses in this country to make our economy hum. I did consider owning a restaurant at one time. I wanted to have a diner, like the Country Kitchen across the street from Fromagerie Bessette (The Cheese Shop). I would have loved to serve up grilled cheese sandwiches and burgers and shakes, with delicious homemade pies, homemade ice cream, and cheesecakes for dessert. Yum! Can you tell I like food? And I would have demanded that the wait staff dance in the aisles! Heck, I would have joined them.

Many of my CHEESE SHOP MYSTERY readers ask if I have tasted all the cheeses that I mention in the books. I have tasted over 200 cheeses in the past year and a half and intend to taste another 200 in the year to come. I also have a real-life cheesemonger, Marcella and her feline foodie, Spaulding Gray, that give me fabulous suggestions! [I recently shared an Italian Meatball recipe on her site. Mounded with cheese. Divine.]

Research is so much fun. It’s been one of the true delights of my life going into various cheese shops and asking for a sliver of something new or buying a unique cheese online and offering it at a party. A recent discovery was Rush Creek Reserve, from Oregon. Talk about melt-in-your-mouth. Set out at room temperature, it’s a paste that simply scoops out of its bark-bound crust. Delish!

As for mysteries, I’ve been a mystery fan for as long as I can remember. As a girl, I read all of the Nancy Drew stories and Agatha Christie novels. And now I read many of the current foodie mysteries from wonderful authors, such as, Krista Davis, Cleo Coyle, Julie Hyzy, and so many more!

I hope you all enjoy Clobbered by Camembert and I would love to hear your feedback!

You can read more about the book and the series on my website: http://www.averyaames.com,

Charlotte Bessette—proprietor of Le Petit Fromagerie, affectionately known in Providence, Ohio, as the Cheese Shop—is busy setting up her tent for the town’s Winter Wonderland faire, where she’ll offer fine wines and scrumptious cheeses. In the midst of the preparations, Charlotte meets an old friend of her mother, Kaitlyn Clydesdale, who has come back to Providence with plans to start a new honeybee farm. When Kaitlyn is found dead in the cottage of Charlotte’s assistant Rebecca, suspicion falls on Rebecca’s boyfriend, a honeybee farmer himself. Charlotte knows this beekeeper wouldn’t hurt a fly, so she decides to find the real killer. While the town buzzes with gossip, can Charlotte catch the culprit without getting stung herself?

Dollycas’s Thoughts
Charlotte Bessette is a wonderful strong woman, raised by her grandparents. Her parents were killed in an accident when Charlotte was just a toddler. She has had more than a few bumps already in life but emerges from each them even stronger. She also has a huge heart which means it is hard for her to say “no” to anyone which sometimes leads her to yet another bump in the road. The trouble is lately this bumps have been dead bodies or live ones she just wishes would leave her alone. Rebecca is quite demanding of Charlotte in this installment but then again her boyfriend is being accused of murder. You can’t help but love these characters.

As you can see from the cover of the book illustrated by Teresa Fasolino, the setting is gorgeous. The Winter Wonderland Faire sounds like an awesome event, the food, the ice sculptures, the choir, the author puts you right there, you may even shiver from the cold weather as the snow starts to gently fall.

Avery also sculpts a wonderful winter mystery. New characters come to town shedding some light on the past and also with big ideas that could mean major changes to Providence making many upset as they learn the details. But who would commit murder? We are kept guessing until the very end.

The setting may be winter but that makes this is a perfect cozy to curl up in front of the fire to read. Don’t forgot to pour a glass of wine and make a little cheesy snack. The story will have you craving both.
