Empty nester Merry Winters loves three things: Christmas, crafting and her family. To regain purpose and joy, Merry hits the road to a Christmas vendor event with her furry sidekick Ebenezer in her new mobile crafting sleigh, aka an RV.

But it soon turns into the nightmare before Christmas when Merry unwraps her Scrooge of an ex-husband’s body in one of the RV’s compartments. Add to that his missing winning lottery ticket believed to be stashed somewhere in the RV, leading the homicide detective and Merry’s stepdaughter to believe Merry is the one whodunit.

With visions of prison dancing in her head, will Merry be able to solve this Christmas calamity before she’s locked away?

Dollycas’s Thoughts

With a name like Merry Winters, you just know she is going to love Christmas. She also loves crafting and her family. Merry is going through a rough time adjusting to her kids moving out on their own and a recent divorce, so she decides to throw herself into her crafts. When she gets the opportunity to purchase on RV she jumps at it because she believes it is the perfect way to take her crafts on the road, traveling to craft shows far and wide. She even buys a pet to take with her, Ebenezer, a guinea pig.

Her first trip in her new RV is to the Christmas Holiday Bazaar in Morgantown, not too far from her home in Season’s Greetings, West Virginia. When she arrives she notices an odd smell. Thinking the former owner, her ex-stepdaughter left something in one of the compartments that had now spoiled she starts to look around. But it isn’t rotting food she finds, it’s her ex-husband, very dead and stinking to high heaven. When the police arrive Merry becomes their #1 suspect. She can’t believe they actually think she killed him and hid him in the RV she is driving around. She knows she has to find the real killer or Santa will be delivering her presents to her in jail. Behind bars is not how she imagined celebrating her favorite time of year.

I loved this story. Merry Winters has had a wonderful life after a precarious start. She has a huge heart and believes the best in everyone which at times can be her downfall. We do share a love of crafting and I miss doing the crafts I love. That is why I enjoy cozy mysteries like this one. I can live vicariously through the characters.

I don’t share her love of guinea pigs though. Ebenezer runs free through her house and does add some humorous moments. My guinea pig experience was not good. Our older children each had one and soon their care fell to me and cleaning their cages daily is an experience I would love to forget. They did enjoy their playtime, inside and out, but that was limited. I was glad their time with us was short.

Fittingly set in the holiday season, complete with a blizzard was great. Made me feel right at home as similar weather was happening here in Wisconsin as I was reading. I could relate to Merry’s worries about driving the RV on snowy slippery roads and her concern that the RV may not be the best choice for cold weather without some major renovations.

The mystery was fast paced with several surprising twists including unexpected suspects. The author has crafted a unique mystery and I really enjoyed the way she told this story. I was engaged the entire way and captivated by the way everything came together in the end.

Great characters, (I loved their names), an excellent plot, and a fun setting gave me everything I look for in a quality cozy mystery. I am excited to see where Ms. Freeburn takes us in book two.

About the Author

Christina Freeburn has always loved books. There was nothing better than picking up a story and being transported to another place. The love of reading evolved into the love of writing and she’s been writing since her teenage years. Her first novel was a 2003 Library of Virginia Literary Award nominee. Her mysteries series, Faith Hunter Scrap This Mystery and Merry & Bright Handcrafted Mysteries, are a mix of crafty and crime and feature heroines whose crafting time is interrupted by crime solving.

Christina served in the US Army and has also worked as a paralegal, librarian, church secretary, and golf shop pro. She lives in West Virginia with her husband, dog, and a rarely seen cat except by those who are afraid and allergic to felines.

Praise for Not a Creature Was Stirring
(Merry & Bright Handcrafted Mystery)
by Christina Freeburn

This book was the right mix of Christmas cheer, family relationships, mystery, and community.
~Carla Loves to Read

If you love Christmas, you really do need to read this book. Christmas oozes from every page. Whether it’s talk of Christmas carols, Christmas decorations, Christmas crafts, or comparing people to characters from Christmas stories, you can’t help but get into the Christmas spirit.
~Carstairs Considers….

What made this cozy mystery delightful for me was the settings, of course (all that snow!) but mainly the character of Merry Winters. Here is an individual we ought to all admire: a genuinely GOOD person, ready to think the best of everybody and to exert the effort to help and comfort anyone in need.
~Mallory Heart’s Cozies

Not A Creature Was Stirring is fast-paced, funny, and filled with a quirky cast of characters. I devoured this book in a couple of days.
~Socrates’ Book Reviews…

This is a story about new possibilities and old insecurities, some relationships and choices revisited, some regret . . . The characters are complicated and have “interesting“ relationships.
~Laura’s Interests

An intriguing mystery and themes of Christmas and crafting make NOT A CREATURE WAS STIRRING a fun holiday read.

On Flashback Fridays I will share with you the books I missed when they were first
released that have been screaming at me from my To-Be-Read bookshelf.

I had every book in this series except the first one, this one, either on my shelf or on my kindle. I always try to read series books in order. Last week I decided I had waited long enough to start this series so I bought this book and I am upset that I waited so long.

Former US Army JAG specialist, Faith Hunter, returns to her West Virginia home to work in her grandmothers’ scrapbooking store determined to lead an unassuming life after her adventure abroad turned disaster. But her quiet life unravels when her friend is charged with murder, and Faith inadvertently supplied the evidence. So Faith decides to cut through the scrap and piece together what really happened. With a sexy prosecutor, a determined homicide detective, a handful of sticky suspects and a crop contest gone bad, Faith quickly realizes if she’s not careful, she’ll be the next one cropped.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Faith Hunter has a past. Her dismissal from the Army is a bit unclear, it is something she wants to keep to herself. Her grandmothers think she needs a new man in her life and they have no problem pushing and nudging one specific man her way. She is happy managing their scrapbooking shop, Scrap This, and taking things easy for now.

She is excited about a local Art Fair her grandmothers have organized. The shop has a booth and is running a couple of contests so she hopes it will draw some new customers.

Trouble arises before the fair barely starts. Then it turns major when someone is murdered and Faith’s friend, Marilyn is the prime suspect. It’s a sticky mess and Faith feels she needs to try to paste the clues together to help. It was kinda her fault that Marilyn was arrested.

I really like that characters in this story. Faith is trying so hard to keep her secret and protect her heart. Her grandmothers, Hope and Cheryl,  just want her to be happy. Steve Davis, the easy on the eyes prosecutor, is the man Hope and Cheryl would like to see their granddaughter matched with but hunky Homicide Detective Roget may have some designs on her himself.  The dialogue between the characters is well written.

The scrapbook theme is fun and sparked my creative juices.

The mystery itself was very intriguing and while I knew who the culprit couldn’t be I truly didn’t know who did it until right along with Faith. The ending was full of suspense.

The author blends a good dose of humor throughout the book too. This little snippet made me giggle.

“We should unlock the door,” Cheryl said. “Are you sure?” Hope asked. “It looks like someone said George Clooney was here giving out his phone number.”

This story was a great introduction to this series. All the cozy elements are present, great characters, a charming small town, and a murder with plenty of suspects.  I plan to read the rest of the books available in this series very soon.

Synopsis

The hope of a future for the broken begins in Mourning.

Skip-tracer Renee Stratford-Knight’s life plan changed upon her sister’s murder. Instead of using her skills to find people, Renee opened New Beginnings a firm specializing in “vanishing” abused women. Now her ex-husband -and former business partner – Jonas Knight reenters her life asking about her most vulnerable client.

Jonas knows his ex-wife helped embezzler Gina Howard elude the authorities and intends to bring the young woman to justice. When Renee is threatened, Jonas grows suspicious of his client’s reason for finding his niece.

In order to uncover the secret a teenager girl disappeared to keep, and a killer wants silenced, Jonas and Renee must struggle through distrust and the pain of their pasts to work together to save the life of teenage girl – and their own.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

This is an exceptional start for this series. Freeburn draws you right in as the reader strives to understand what broke up Renee and Jonas Knight. Both are skip-tracers but Renee is taking her skills in a different direction. They soon find their cases are intertwined so it is hard for them to avoid each other.  Plus there is a huge secret that is revealed and changes everything.

These characters are so fully developed from the start. You know Renee’s faith is a huge part of her life and she leans on it heavily in her work. She helps to relocate battered women, a cause that touched her family personally. Jonas was abandoned as a child and really doesn’t have much faith at all. He has serious trust issues and takes on a burden that is not really his.

This is an inspirational story in that Renee prays for God’s help throughout the book. She wants to do the right things, trust the right people and follow God’s path for her life but she has a really hard time with forgiveness.

There are several supporting characters that also shine in this story. Renee’s brother Alex and her friend Danita work with Renee at New Beginnings. She is confident is Danita’s abilities but is afraid to let Alex get too involved. She wants to keep her little brother safe. Renee’s parents also help battered women and are working to set up a shelter.

The author has given us a suspenseful plot while blending in the spiritual and romantic elements flawlessly.

This is a cause near and dear to my heart and I am thrilled with the way Christina Freeburn highlights this type of violence in this series. Although I have learned from family experience domestic violence cuts both ways. It is not always the woman or children that are the abused parties.

I can’t wait to read, Led Astray (New Beginnings Book 2)!!
