Intent on getting their two mischievous dogs under control, Emory Martinez and her half sister, Vannie, join a group dog training program led by Shawn Parker. With a graduation certificate just within grasp and a party to celebrate their hard-won achievements, what could go wrong? For starters, their two dogs have decided to wreak havoc during the party and tempers flare. It turns out not everyone is pleased with the dog trainer and his mother, the condo association president. Whispers of the mother and son’s misbehavior, or worse, fly amongst the barks, whines, and growls of the canines.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Cupcake baker extraordinaire Emory Martinez keeps herself busy with her own clients, helps her sister with her catering business, is a companion to her landlord Tillie, and works for Tillie’s son to keep affairs in order when he is out of town. She is also becoming quite the amateur sleuth usually with Tillie by her side.

In this fifth installment, Emory and her half-sister Vannie enroll Emory’s dogs, Piper and Missy in a dog training class. They made it through all the sessions and are ready to celebrate with the entire group when the dog’s mischievous nature cannot be contained and they cause a bit of ruckus. The instructor gets so upset he declares Piper and Missy had failed the class and his mother, condo association president is livid and asks Emory, Vannie, and the naughty pups to leave.

It is then Emory learns of the questionable behavior of the dog trainer and his mother, but she is still surprised when she returns and finds one of them dead.

So with Tillie by her side and help from family and friends, she tries to find the depth of their misdeeds while trying to corner the killer.

I love this series so much!

It is the extraordinary cast of characters that Ms. Davis has created that keeps me coming back for each new story. The relationships are realistic, and genuine, and continue to grow. New characters are introduced and are accepted in the group that truly is one big family. I love the big family dinners and the way everyone pulls together in some pretty stressful situations. Tillie continues to be my favorite character and I firmly believe everyone needs a Tillie in their lives.

The mystery is complex with a plethora of suspects. It is so well written and plotted. With subplots dealing with puppy mills, money laundering, and blackmail the story goes off in many directions as Emory, Tillie and the rest of the group try to make everything they are learning go together to make sense to lead them to a killer without getting themselves killed in the process. I was glued to the pages each step along the way. It was definitely not a clear-cut path. Ms. Davis set everything up perfectly to keep her readers on their toes. She also has an expert hand with humor because this cast is fun-loving and sometimes just plain funny.

Of course, there are cupcakes and other delicious food mentioned/described throughout the book and the author includes many recipes at the end of the story to tickle our taste buds. I would love to get together with the characters in this story just for the desserts and dinners.

You will find Buttercream Betrayal on my Best Reads List for 2022. The author continues to top herself. I am invested in these characters and each visit ends too soon. Just one more cupcake, please.

Every story in this series is wonderful. I recommend reading them in order but each can be read on its own. This is a series that should not be missed. Cozy mystery lovers will be delighted with each and every story!

Set against the holiday cheer of twinkling lights, costumed carolers, and a festive line of extravagantly decorated boats participating in the annual Christmas boat parade in Newport Beach, California, cupcake caterer Emory Martinez finds that the grinch has crashed the party. Together with her sister Carrie, Emory is catering a delectable feast of holiday cupcakes and cookies aboard a luxury yacht for the new Mrs. Blair Villman and her guests.

Sparks fly when Carrie comes face-to-face with the hostess, who just happens to be Carrie’s high school frenemy, and old grievances are dredged up. Adding fuel to the fire, Blair’s stepson brings his mother, the former Mrs. Villman, to the party. Instead of celebrating holiday cheer, someone seems intent on channeling the Burgermeister Meisterburger and shutting down Blair’s party permanently. When Emory finds a body aboard the yacht, she needs to discover who iced the victim before the Scrooge ruins not only her livelihood but her freedom as well.

Includes delicious holiday recipes.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

I absolutely love this series!

Christmas time in California is so different from what I am used to here in the midwest so I escaped right into this book looking for sun, warmth, holiday cheer, and a lively mystery and Ms. Davis gave me a wonderful holiday gift.

Emory Martinez is excited to serve up cookies and cupcakes at a party her sister Carrie is catering for a mystery client on a luxury yacht. That is until she learns the hostess of the party is a bully from Carrie’s high school days. Emory quickly learns Mrs. Blair Villman now has a glamorous lifestyle but she is still a bully and maybe even worse than she was in high school. Both Carrie and Emory do their best to keep their cool as Blair hurls her insults but they are not the only ones receiving the gift of Blair’s rath. Her stepson brought his mother to the party and Blair is livid.

Carrie’s catering contract also required she serve brunch the next day again on the yacht. She and Em arrive early to get the dishes baked and ready. Everything was going as planned until Emory opens the freezer and finds a body. This job has just been a nightmare and now they are sure to be on the suspect list. So she has to find the killer before she or her sister get frosted for a murder they didn’t commit.

The author has created such a sensational cast of realistic characters. Emory is a great protagonist with a lot on her plate even before the murder. Carrie is still struggling with a new baby in the house. Tillie is always on the go but always ready to help Emory sleuth out a killer. The supporting cast is diverse and interesting. Their interactions are all believable and the dialogue is crisp. Tillie is my hand-down favorite. She has a huge heart and loves to be surrounded by family and friends. She also always knows the right people to visit to get answers to move the case along. She is a spunky woman who knows what she wants and knows how to get it and she is a very good soul.

I found the mystery to be pretty complex. Emory worked hard to speak to everyone on her suspect list. Emory knowing the detective on the case, another strong woman, brings a nice element to this story. Detective Natasha Tran is open-minded and didn’t believe Emory and Carrie killed anyone but she always does things by the book. So of course she didn’t want Emory involving herself in her case. I really enjoyed the back and forth between these characters. In the end, Emory makes a mistake that leads up to a very exciting ending. Again, the author frosted my cookies with the way everything played out.  I have become invested in these characters and when one or more of them are in peril it moves me to the edge of my seat.

The reason I have become invested in these characters is that they are well developed and we get an in-depth look into their lives. This time a visitor arrives from across the pond and there is an interesting turn of events for another character. Throughout the book, there are plenty of family moments and times away from the murder investigation. All these moments flowed seamlessly with the mystery.

Ms. Davis is such an outstanding storyteller. Everyone has known or dealt with a bully in our lives so it is so easy to identify with Carrie and Emory and what they felt dealing with Blair, so that draws you into the story right away. After that, the author pulls you in even tighter with the murder and then you find you just can’t put this book down. You just have to know what happens next. And along with all that Emory continues to bake cupcakes. So now your mind isn’t just engaged with the story, your taste buds are tickled too, just wanting a taste, a bite, or alright, the whole darn cupcake.  I have learned my lesson from reading the previous books in this series. I made sure there were cupcakes in the house before I started reading. They weren’t homemade but they did the trick. Just don’t ask how many I ate by the end. That is a secret I will never reveal.

Every book in the Cupcake Catering Mystery Series is fantastic. You can jump right into this holiday read but they are best read in order to get to know these superb characters. This is the third book in this series to make my yearly Best Reads List. I can’t wait to return to Newport Beach to see what these ladies get into next.

Framed and Frosted, the third book in the Cupcake Catering Mystery series, finds cupcake caterer, Emory Martinez, working at a Laguna Beach society Fourth of July soiree, with her sister and their new employee, Sal. With a host that seems intent on accosting both catering employees and guests alike, things go from bad to worse when he accuses Sal of murdering his long-dead son.

As the crescendo of exploding fireworks overhead becomes the backdrop for cupcakes and champagne, a deadly murder occurs. Can Sal and Emory explain why the cupcake the host ate, after shoving a trayful of buttercream frosted cupcakes onto Sal, resulted in his death? Or will the guests and detective alike believe that Sal is a murderer? Emory and her octogenarian employer, Tillie, whip into action to find out who framed Sal after being frosted by the victim.

Includes recipes!

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Fireworks fly and a body drops when Emory Martinez and her twin sister, Carrie cater an Independence Day event for some Laguna Beach Elite. The Jorgensen’s are high maintenance clients but Carrie is working hard to rebuild her business so she bites her tongue and endures what they dish out, even when Mr. Jorgensen is drunk and manhandling her sister and wrongly accusing her new employee, Sal of murdering his son. Mrs. Jorgensen and their “bodyguard” Tiny do try to keep the man under control but it is an impossible task.

Things get totally out of control when the dessert of Emory’s cupcakes is served. Sal is covered in frosting and Arthur Jorgensen is dead on the ground. The police arrive and Sal is quickly accused of the murder and arrested. Carrie and Emory know he has been framed so Emory taps her octogenarian employer, Tillie to help her prove it and corner the real killer. Now she just has to stay alive long enough to make that happen.

Family drama and Jorgensen drama collide and murder and mayhem rule supreme before this amazing mystery draws to a close.

The story is filled with great characters. I absolutely love Tillie. She may be in her 80’s but that woman has stamina I wish I had and connections Emory needs. The way these ladies team-up is heartwarming and sometimes hair raising. They are true friends and care for each other dearly. They really lean on each other as they endure some heartbreaking and harrowing events. Carrie is struggling with motherhood and it is portrayed realistically, no sugar coating here. I did enjoy the introduction of a new detective for this story. Another strong woman with some baggage brought a lot to the story and shook things up in several ways. All the characters are as complex as the mystery they are wrapped up in and I love knowing they have more room to grow in future stories.

As I said the mystery is complex with a lot of moving pieces. I was really upset that Sal was railroaded, a clear case of racial profiling and rich white privilege but knowing he had Tillie and Emory fighting for him gave me a little solace. At least he was just arrested and the event wasn’t escalated as it could have been these days. I admire the author for using a hot topic for this book. I also enjoyed the way she blended happenings in Tillie’s family and the murder mystery while keeping it real with everyday life things as well. There was a frightening moment for Emory’s dog Piper that had my blood pressure rising too.  To say there were twists and turns is an understatement. Hang on tight, this story will rock you from beginning to end.

Ms. Davis also excels at world-building. Each and every setting and activity was so easily seen in my mind’s eye. From the cupcakes flying to breakfast in Tillie’s kitchen to the exciting ending, everything was crystal clear.

Kim Davis continues to exceed my expectations and top herself. My only issue is the books don’t come with free samples. BUT they do come with recipes. I really need to learn to bake up some cupcakes before I start reading. The cravings definitely become real as soon as Emory mixes up a batch. The author also includes some savory recipes too.

Each story in this series has been excellent. I recommend reading them in order. Last year Cake Popped Off was a Best Read of 2020 for me and received my Paradise Rating. Again, I am shouting from the rooftops! This Is A Must-Read Mystery!  Framed and Frosted receives my Paradise Rating and will be on my Best Read of 2021 list! Kim Davis is an awesome storyteller and her books are amazing treats that should not be missed!

Cupcake caterer Emory Martinez is hosting a Halloween bash alongside her octogenarian employer, Tillie. With guests dressed in elaborate costumes, the band is rocking, the cocktails are flowing, and tempers are flaring when the hired Bavarian Barmaid tries to hook a rich, hapless husband. Except one of her targets happens to be Emory’s brother-in-law, which bodes ill for his pregnant wife. When Emory tracks down the distraught barmaid, instead of finding the young woman in tears, she finds her dead. Can she explain to the new detective on the scene why the Bavarian Barmaid was murdered in Emory’s bathtub with Emory’s Poison Apple Cake Pops stuffed into her mouth?

With an angry pregnant sister to contend with, she promises to clear her brother-in-law’s name. As Emory starts asking questions and tracking down the identity of the costumed guests, she finds reasons to suspect her brother-in-law has been hiding a guilty secret. Her search leads her to a web of blackmail and betrayal amongst the posh setting of the local country club crowd. Can Emory sift through the lies she’s being told and find the killer? She’ll need to step up her investigation before another victim is sent to the great pumpkin patch in the sky.

Includes spooky Halloween recipes!

Dollycas’s Thoughts

What a fabulous story!

Emory Martinez and her loveable Goldendoodle Piper are settling in with Tillie and they are throwing a Halloween party with Emory providing cupcakes and cake pops while her sister Carrie caters all the rest of the food. The party is rocking until a server dressed as a Bavarian Barmaid starts hitting on many of the wealthy men in attendance. She even sets her sights on Emory’s brother-in-law, Thomas. Confused, Emory thought the bartender and the barmaid were an item. Emory decides to cool tempers she needs to talk to the woman but when she tracks her down she is dead in Emory’s own bathtub. Worse she has a Poison Apple Cake Pops, made by Emory, stuffed in her mouth.

The victim and her little tete-a-tete with Thomas was witnessed by many so he has landed at the top of the suspect list. Carrie begs Emory to investigate and some secrets are revealed. More suspects come to light but Thomas is not immediately cleared. Hang on tight, the twists are epic!

I absolutely love Tillie, in her 80’s and still going strong, even though her family doesn’t think so. They think she is suffering from dementia and belongs in a senior home, leaving them to manage her fortune and inherit it when she dies. Enter Emory to keep an eye on her. Emory quickly learns Tillie is fine and dandy, with more energy and ideas than a woman half her age.

Then Tillie’s son surprises everyone by introducing his new wife. His fourth! after losing his last wife in a tragic accident. The new wife proceeds to change the entire family dynamic by taking charge of everything she can. Thankfully Emory and Tillie have built a bond that can’t be broken, and shockingly the new wife’s days are numbered.

We also meet Detective Gabe O’Neill. Gabe just happens to be Emory’s BFF Brad’s significant other but she doubts that is going to help clear Thomas’s name.   All the characters Ms. Davis has created are strong. Some are very engaging, others bring the drama.

The plot of this mystery is complex and twisted. Emory and Tillie make a great sleuthing team, especially with all of Tillie’s social circle. The subplots blend seamlessly and believe me these are not just daily life interludes, they have some intense moments too. I really enjoyed following along but let me tell you when the killer was revealed the word surprised doesn’t cover it! Blown away! Astonished! Thunderstruck! And this is not the first time Kim Davis has done this to me!  Dang!  she is an incredible storyteller!!

In addition to a marvelous mystery, the story is filled with cupcakes. Emory is always baking and testing new flavor combinations. Some savory dishes are included too. My mouth was watering from the descriptions and I will be copying all the recipes at the back of the book.

Long story short, I am shouting from the rooftops! This Is A Must-Read Mystery! Fun, entertaining, and oh-so-wonderful. If you haven’t read Sprinkles of Suspicion start with that one, because series are always better from the beginning, but it is also a great whodunit. Cake Popped Off will be on my Best Reads of 2020. I am excited to see what the author has in store for her characters next.

Sprinkles of Suspicion (Cupcake Catering Mystery Series)
Cozy Mystery
1st in Series
Setting – California
Publisher: Cinnamon & Sugar Press (June 2, 2020)
Print Length: 269 pages
Digital ASIN: B086XKRCJH

One glass of cheap California chardonnay cost Emory Gosser Martinez her husband, her job, and her best friend. Unfortunately, that was only the beginning of her troubles.

Distraught after discovering the betrayal by her husband and best friend, Tori, cupcake caterer Emory Martinez allows her temper to flare. Several people witness her very public altercation with her ex-friend. To make matters worse, Tori exacts her revenge by posting a fake photo of Emory in a compromising situation, which goes viral on social media. When Tori is found murdered, all signs point to Emory being the prime suspect.

With the police investigation focused on gathering evidence to convict her, Emory must prove her innocence while whipping up batches of cupcakes and buttercream. Delving into the past of her murdered ex-friend, she finds other people had reasons to want Tori dead, including Emory’s own husband. Can she find the killer, or will the clues sprinkled around the investigation point the police back to her?

Includes recipes!

Dollycas’s Thoughts

A night out with her best friend turns Emory Gosser Martinez entirely upside down including becoming the prime suspect in that friend’s murder. While trying to keep her mind on her cupcake catering business she also has to do everything she can to prove her innocence. The trouble is she doesn’t know who she can trust and maybe putting her faith in the wrong people. There is plenty of suspicion sprinkled around but is there enough to find the real killer or will Emory be baking behind bars?

Emory Gosser Martinez is an interesting protagonist and for the most part her own worst enemy. A far from perfect amateur sleuth, very naive, a bit of a doormat, and she makes horrible choices in husbands and best friends. I was happy to see that by the end of the story she was turning the corner on these traits and that the development of her character continues in a pleasing way.

We are introduced to several characters within these pages. Several are strong that I hope we see more of in future installments. Several deplorable that I am happy to see an end of in this installment. It takes a talent to write characters to invoke these emotions and Ms. Davis has this talent.

This story moves along at a great pace and doesn’t lag anywhere. There is always something happening, drama, twists, and yes, cupcakes. So well-plotted, I was totally taken in by the entire story and flabbergasted when the real killer was revealed. I also loved the way the story ended which has me so excited for the next book in this series.

Sprinkles of Suspicion has a shocking start and holds on tight. A little different than your typical cozy mystery at the beginning but is quickly reeled into the cozy realm. All the cupcake references will have your tastebuds popping and appreciating that several recipes are included at the end of the story.

An Entertaining Read! I can’t wait for more from this author!

Once again, the writing is delightful and the characters are nicely and vividly fleshed out. They added ‘sprinkles of delight and flavor’ to this fun cozy-mystery and kept me hooked from the beginning to finish, for sure!
~Diary of a Book Fiend

Her (Emory) trusting nature definitely gets her into sticky situations and makes her an easy mark. The pace is steady and her cluelessness adds a touch of humor. An enjoyable read.

#Review / #Giveaway – A Game of Deceit by K. A. Davis – Great Escapes Tour

A Game of Deceit
by K. A. Davis

Genre: Suspense
Setting – California
Date of Release: August 1, 2017
Number in Series: Stand-alone
Publisher: Cinnamon & Sugar Press
Paperback: 294 pages
ISBN-13: 978-0999068816
Kindle ASIN: B071KFS6CW

Synopsis:

A father’s disappearance never solved, a mother’s secret taken to the grave, a daughter deceived…

Kathryn Landry thinks her life is just about perfect. She is the owner of a successful interior designer business in Newport Beach, California, and she has an attentive, supportive husband. But her world comes crashing down when her husband, Neil Landry, vanishes without a trace… in a situation almost identical to the disappearance of her father twenty years before.

With her father’s disappearance still a mystery, Kathryn is skeptical that the detective assigned to her case will be able to find her husband. Determined to uncover the truth, Kathryn is plunged into a world of politics, high-priced call girls and wealth. As she begins to search for her husband, a decades-old secret her mother took to the grave threatens to destroy all she holds dear. Caught up in a web of betrayals and deceit, and not knowing who to trust, Kathryn must find a way to survive as she discovers the past has a way of repeating itself.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Could history be repeating itself? Kathryn Landry’s father disappeared years ago and now her husband is missing. What she can’t believe is the detective that couldn’t find her father is leading the case to find her husband. Secrets and lies come together to make a dreadful game of deceit. Kathryn doesn’t trust the detective so she throws herself right into the middle of the investigation. Her friends are worried, the detective is trying to keep her safe but she won’t rest until she finds the truth even if the truth could kill her.

To call this story chilling is an understatement but that is the word the quickly comes to mind when I think about this book. More than a few times I had chills running up and down my spine while reading it.

I immediately connected with Kathryn. Her marriage was comfortable, each doing their own thing, not necessarily romantic, but to arrive home and find her husband gone was surprising. Then she started to notice some things that just weren’t right. She had to report him missing. The shock she felt when the detective arrived was felt right from the pages. That and a client stepping in and wanting to help her too was truly not expected. It was a very unusual triangle, but that was when the story became “unputdownable”.

Ms Davis has written a thrilling novel full of suspense and mystery, greed and jealousy, fires and horseplay, (critical threats to real horses), hidden bank accounts, murder, betrayal, lies, secrets, DECEIT, and to someone it is all just a game. The pace is fast, heart pounding and at times I found myself almost unable to catch my breath. I cannot believe this is her debut novel. It is so well plotted and written. The dialogue is perfect. The characters are fully fleshed out, some are conniving and scary while some very helpful and just plain nice, but all of them are unique.

I loved this book, it was an emotional ride for Kathryn Landry and for me the reader as well. This story is a must read for suspense lovers.

K.A. Davis is an author to keep our eyes on. I am excited for her next novel.

p.s. This author is a foodie and unlike most suspense thriller novels this one comes with recipes at the back of the book.

About The Author
Kim Davis lives in Southern California with her husband, near wildfire country. During the Portola Hills fire in October 2007, she had to evacuate her two young granddaughters, one of whom has Rett Syndrome, as a wall of one hundred foot flames crept towards their home. Thankfully, due to the brave efforts of firefighters, their neighborhood was spared and no loss of life or property occurred. She was able to use that experience to write a harrowing scene in A Game of Deceit.

She writes the Cinnamon, Sugar, and a Little Bit of Murder blog and has had several children’s articles published in Cricket, Nature Friend, Skipping Stones, and the Seed of Truth magazines. Kim Davis is a member of Mystery Writers of America and Sisters in Crime.

In this book, you are thrown for loops and turns that make you breathless, and eager to know who did it.
~Bibliophile Reviews

There is a new author in town that can send shivers down your spine with intrigue , secrets and characters that explode off the pages.
~Texas Book-aholic

This book kept me guessing. Just when I thought I knew where things were going, I’d be thrown for a loop. This was a book that I didn’t even try to guess as I read. I just sat back and let the author take me for the ride.
~A Cozy Experience

As I read the book I found myself framing hypotheses and then revising them again and again, flip-flopping in my suspicions right along with Kathryn as the story progressed.
