Cleo Coyle Serves Up a New Coffeehouse Mystery: Brewed Awakening + #Giveaway

I am thrilled to host this guest post from Cleo Coyle today!

Brewed Awakening by Cleo Coyle

BREWED AWAKENING marks the 18th Coffeehouse Mystery that my husband and I have written. Like every entry in our long-running series, this story centers on the life of a divorced single mom in her forties named Clare Cosi.

Clare is a coffeehouse manager by day and a determined sleuth by night. She’s often assisted in her crime-solving adventures by her quirky staff of eager baristas, her beloved octogenarian employer, and her shop’s globetrotting rogue of a coffee hunter.

Our idea for Clare’s latest case began with a conversation over (you guessed it) coffee. As a married couple, Marc and I have been through decades of ups and down. But what if those years were wiped from our memories? Would we still be drawn to each other? If so, how exactly does “like” deepen into something more? When does love happen?

With Clare now on a path to be married to her longtime boyfriend, NYPD Detective Mike Quinn, we decided to explore those questions within the plotline of Brewed Awakening, and we agreed the fulcrum of our tale would be memory loss.

As the mystery opens, Clare awakens on a bench in New York’s Washington Square Park. She has no idea that she’s been missing for the past week, or that her friends and family have been frantic with worry. When she finds her way to the charming, landmark Village Blend coffeehouse, everyone is overjoyed to see her. No one is happier than the handsome NYPD detective who claims to be her fiancé. But to Mike Quinn’s crushing distress, Clare doesn’t remember him, or much of anything about the last fifteen years of her life.

Clare’s missing memory is tied to a crime she witnessed. An acquaintance of Clare’s elegant employer invited Clare to her posh hotel to sample gourmet wedding cakes. After their indulgent tasting, the pair headed to the parking garage, where a camera captured a masked figure confronting the hotel heiress at gunpoint with Clare looking on. Did the kidnapper take Clare, too? The camera went dark, just like Clare’s memory. Soon authorities grow suspicious. Is Clare really a victim? Or merely acting like one? Evidence is mounting that she set the woman up. To clear her name, Clare must find a way to reclaim her memories and rescue the heiress before this high-stakes crime ends in tragedy.

Although Clare’s struggle with her memory is fictional, Marc and I were inspired (through our research) by many true cases of amnesia, including a married woman whose traumatic accident resulted in forgetting her own husband and believing her teenage daughter was still a toddler. In another case, a young teacher disappeared after going for a jog, and then reappeared, floating in New York Harbor, with no memory of how she got there or the weeks she went missing. (We could go on, but you get the idea.)

If you’re a newcomer to our Coffeehouse Mysteries, don’t hesitate to pick up Brewed Awakening. Each of our books can be read as a stand-alone story. And, if you like one, you’ll have seventeen more to enjoy. But don’t miss our latest. We hope you’ll find this mystery about memory to be unforgettable.

Why We Made Our Ghost Reappear

By Cleo Coyle

“Jack and Pen are a terrific duo who prove that love can transcend anything.”

—The Mystery Reader

For nearly ten years, fans of our Haunted Bookshop Mysteries told us how much they missed our stories. Emails, messages, comments on posts implored us to bring our series back. We expected this outcry to die down, but it never did, which is why we returned to writing it.

Look for our brand new Haunted Bookshop Mystery, The Ghost, and the Bogus Bestseller, to be released next week by our longtime publisher. We dedicated it to our readers, who waited almost a decade for Jack to come back. And who is Jack? If you’re new to our series, he’s the first (of five) reasons fans say they love our books…

Haunted Bookshop Mysteries by Cleo Coyle

#1 THE HARDBOILED GHOST: Jack Shepard, PI

A tough PI from the mean streets of New York, Jack lived on the rougher side of life. His death (in 1949) was no picnic, either. Gunned down while pursuing a lead in a murder case, he was left with a hardened outlook, especially when it came to judging people and their motives. Despite his troubled spirit, Jack has a wicked sense of humor, and he can’t help cracking wise about the absurdities of our modern life—from paying for water in a bottle to staring half the day at a little glowing screen.

Penelope McClure – Haunted Bookshop Mysteries by Cleo Coyle

#2 THE PRIM BOOKSELLER: Penelope McClure

A young widow with a little boy, Penelope Thornton-McClure once believed in spirits, until a series of tragic losses took her faith away. Slowly, Jack Shepard is restoring that faith, and though Pen often bristles at the ghost’s retro male attitude, she’s encouraged by the strangest irony of all—the ghost’s belief in her. Whether Jack is an actual apparition or the vivid imaginings of a stressed and lonely widow, the surly, wise-cracking gumshoe is Pen’s daily companion and a handy advisor when big-city crimes come to Pen’s small town.

via GIPHY

#3 QUINDICOTT: The Quaint Rhode Island Town

Readers love spending time in Penelope’s charming hometown. Quindicott may be less posh than nearby Newport, but its residents are proud of its revived Cranberry Street business district and renowned Victorian B&B. Fresh ocean air, amazing seafood, and a neighborly community make it one of the area’s most pleasant places to live—even if you happen to be dead.

#4 THE QUIBBLERS IN THE BOOKSHOP

The “Quibblers” are a cast of quirky characters who make up the local Quindicott Business Owners Association. They meet regularly in Penelope’s charming old bookshop (guarded by Pen’s cat Bookmark). There’s Fiona Finch, the fastidious co-owner of Finch Inn, who has a penchant for True Crime books and “happening to overhear” conversations between guests. Seymour, the outspoken mailman who moonlights as an ice cream truck driver, collects vintage pulp fiction, and lives in a haunted mansion. And there are plenty of other colorful characters who Pen dearly loves—and the ghost barely tolerates.

#5 THE MURDER MYSTERIES: Twisty Plots to Die For

The entertaining murder mystery storylines of our Haunted Bookshop series have kept readers happily turning pages for years. Join our prim bookseller as she teams up with her hardboiled ghost to catch cunning killers. Each book can be read as a stand-alone or in order. The six titles are…

The Ghost and Mrs. McClure

The Ghost and the Dead Deb

The Ghost and the Dead Man’s Library

The Ghost and the Femme Fatale

The Ghost and the Haunted Mansion

And our newest release…

The Ghost and the Bogus Bestseller

Penelope Thornton-McClure and her bookshop’s ghost-in-residence Jack Shepard are back on a new case in this delightful paranormal mystery from New York Times bestselling author Cleo Coyle.

A big bestseller leads to small town trouble.

Bookshop owner Penelope Thornton-McClure didn’t believe in ghosts, until she was haunted by the hard-boiled spirit of 1940s private investigator Jack Shepard. Now Jack is back on the job, and Pen is eternally grateful…

After an elegant new customer has a breakdown in her shop, Penelope suspects there is something bogus behind the biggest bestseller of the year. This popular potboiler is so hot that folks in her tiny Rhode Island town are dying to read it–literally. First one customer turns up dead, followed by another mysterious fatality connected to the book, which Pen discovers is more than just fiction. Now, with the help of her gumshoe ghost, Pen must solve the real-life cold case behind the bogus bestseller before the killer closes the book on her.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Jack and Pen fans Rejoice! This series is back with a brand new mystery! New readers Rejoice! The authors have written this mystery in a way that you can jump right in with this new mystery and feel right at home.

Penelope Thornton-McClure got more than she bargained for in her bookshop, but now that she has gotten to know Private Eye Jack Shepard she wouldn’t have it any other way. You see, Jack is a ghost from the 1940’s, killed in the shop in 1947, and he has saved her more than once. Together they have solved quite a few mysteries too.

A new book has just been released and it has been flying off the shelves. When a well to do customer falls apart in the store after a peek at the book jacket, Pen becomes concerned. That and the woman ran out of the store without paying for the book. When Pen tracks her down she makes a horrible discovery, the woman is dead and was killed not long before Pen’s arrival. The police say suicide but Pen doesn’t think so. There is a whole lot more about this bestseller than the story within the pages and with Jack’s help Pen is going find out what it is, even if it means making contact with a killer.

I was so excited to hear this series was returning. Book #5, The Ghost in the Haunted Mansion was released in 2008. Ten years later our patience has been rewarded. Don’t worry if you have forgotten details about the characters or if this is a new series to you. The characters are all introduced like this is the first book in the series. They are some incredible characters too. Jack, Pen, Aunt Sadie, co-owner of the bookstore, mailman Seymour, and Bookmark, the cat,  are all back.

The author’s style of writing really set a scene and give readers a  delightful mystery. Well-written and well-plotted the story is full of twists and turns that make the book very hard to put down.  I really love the trips back in time Jack takes Pen on via her dreams. She and readers get to see how one of his old cases played out and helps her see clues to the current mystery.

These authors never fail to give readers an impressive mystery. I was so excited to start reading this book but was sad to see it end. I am so happy to have reconnected with these characters and truly hope we do not have to wait 10 years to visit Quindicott again.

Cozy Wednesday with Cleo Coyle – Author of SHOT IN THE DARK #Giveaway too!

A divorced single mom in her forties, our amateur sleuth Clare Cosi is a coffeehouse manager by day and a relentless snoop by night. SHOT IN THE DARK marks the 17th Coffeehouse Mystery that my husband and I have written, and like every entry in our series, Clare sleuths with the help of her quirky staff of baristas, her beloved octogenarian employer, and her shop’s globetrotting rogue of a coffee hunter.

For Clare’s latest case, we researched New York’s café and restaurant scene. As managers of these establishments will tell you, mobile phone dating has become a big contributor to their bottom lines. When we learned that, we knew Clare’s Village Blend would be no different. In SHOT IN THE DARK, even Clare’s elderly ex-mother-in-law is “swiping to meet” new gentlemen friends! But there is a dark side to all this swiping, and we knew Clare’s down-to-earth common sense would make her uneasy about the quickie hookups taking place in her shop.

Manhattan Greenway Hudson River by Cleo Coyle

In Clare’s view, all these high-octane matches were bound to leave many feeling burned. One night, her worst fears come true when a date’s disappointment turns deadly. First, a shot rings out, and later the corpse of a sweet, young female customer is found floating in the Hudson River. Soon Clare is sparing with the NYPD Harbor Patrol, prowling a night-shrouded park in search of clues, and sneaking into a (way too) hipster health club.

Most of SHOT IN THE DARK’s New York locations are either real or based on real locations; and a few are among our favorite places in the city: from a cozy, landmark coffeehouse in picturesque Greenwich Village, to a strip of greenway with breathtaking views of skyscrapers along the mile-wide Hudson, to the foggy wharves of Red Hook, Brooklyn—even a battered railroad barge that’s been transformed into a lively outdoor restaurant.

If you’re a newcomer to our Coffeehouse Mysteries, don’t hesitate to pick up our latest title. All of our books can be read as stand-alone stories. And, if you like one, you’ll have sixteen more to enjoy. But don’t miss our latest: SHOT IN THE DARK!

A new smartphone dating game turns the Village Blend into a hookup hot spot, until one dark night, when a gunshot leaves a dead body behind and the landmark coffeehouse becomes the center of a whole new scene–a crime scene.

As Village Blend manager Clare Cosi attempts to finalize a date for her wedding, her ex-husband becomes addicted to making dates through smartphone swipes. Clare has mixed feelings about these quickie matchups happening in her coffeehouse. Even her octogenarian employer is selecting suitors by screenshot! But business is booming, and Clare works hard to keep the espresso shots flowing. Then one dark night, another kind of shot leaves a dead body for her to find.

The corpse is a successful entrepreneur who became notorious for his “hit it and quit it” behavior: prowling for women on dating apps, then devastating his conquests with morning-after insults. Though the NYPD quickly arrests one of his recent victims, Clare finds reason to believe she’s been framed.

Now, with the help of her ex and crew of quirky baristas, Clare starts “swiping” through suspects in her own shop, determined to find the real killer before another shot rings out.

Includes a bang-up menu of tempting recipes.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

These dating apps have been the rage and this one is supposed to unique. Clare’s ex seems to have a new addiction, meeting new “Cinderella’s”, sometimes more than one a night. The new hot meeting place for this new app Cinder just happens to be the Village Blend. Business is jumping until gunshots are fired in the upstairs lounge. The place clears out quick and the cops arrive to make the arrest. Luckily no one was hurt but can the Village Blend survive the bad PR?

The next night when Clare ventures out to pick up her boss from a date gone wrong she finds a girl’s body floating in the water. She recognizes the girl as one of her customers and is shocked to find she has a memory stick with 5 copies of the viral video of the shooting the night before. Panicking about how this is going effect her business Clare reluctantly teams up with the creators of Cinder to host a night that will hopefully bring business back. But then, another dead body is found, the police are back and may have arrested the wrong person.

Can Claire match the right suspect to the crime before there’s another “shot in the dark”? And will she have a job after everything that has happened?

I love this series! I love these characters! I can’t believe this is the 17th book in this series. The authors do an excellent job of making each story fresh and new for their fans while also giving new readers plenty of detail to be able to jump right into this series even at book 17.

Clare Cozi manages the Village Blend along with her ex-husband. The place is actually owned by her ex-mother-in-law. She has a great staff, a wonderful fiance’ and a level head on her shoulders. She just doesn’t understand this new dating app craze.  Her staff does their best to help her out. Her ex has taken the whole thing to the extreme but he is not alone. Even his mother is using an app to line up dates. These characters are delightful. They jump off of the page. Their dialogues are snappy and at time laugh out loud funny.

The authors have hit the mystery part of this story out of the park. Twists, turns, drugs and fitness clubs wrapping it together with this dating app phenomenon that is taking over the world. The story is very fast paced and the authors set up the chapters in such a way that you keep saying “just one more chapter” again and again. This book was impossible to put down.

The Village Blend and New York are a spectacular setting for this story. The author’s descriptions create a visual masterpiece for readers to enjoy. I can smell the coffee, the rich blends, along with delicious baked goodies too.

In addition to all the action, a light is shined on this “face in your phone” society in which we are living. Maybe because I am a dinosaur that doesn’t have a cell phone I see it more than others. I go to dinner with my family and look around the table and everyone but me and my grandchildren have their heads buried deep into whatever is happening on their phones. I do realize that if the children had cell phones I would be on my own.  I love new technology but am not a fan of all the time they take away from daily life. For my family, I do make a conscious effort to say “phones down, family time.”

Cleo Coyle never disappoints. Wonderful characters, intriguing mysteries, and just the right amounts of humor and romance. Each new story becomes another favorite. This was such an entertaining story with so many exciting moments. It truly was a perfect escape!!

It is my absolute pleasure to Welcome Cleo Coyle back to Escape With Dollycas today!

DEAD COLD BREW AND NEWS FROM CLEO COYLE

Marc and I are excited to be visiting with you today. Special thanks to Dollycas for giving us this chance to tell you about our new Coffeehouse Mystery—and what we’re working on for the future.

It’s official. After 15 books, our amateur sleuth, coffeehouse manager Clare Cosi, finally becomes engaged to her boyfriend, NYPD Detective Mike Quinn. Our readers have been waiting for this moment for years. In Dead Cold Brew, it happens at last.

Unfortunately, the vintage coffee diamonds Mike slips on Clare’s finger open a Pandora’s box to a cold case murder that occurred sixty years before.

This chilling homicide took place in a stateroom of the SS Andrea Doria, a luxurious Italian ocean liner that tragically sank off the coast of Nantucket in 1956.

On board that ship was a gifted Italian artisan named Gus Campana, the jewelry designer who created Clare’s engagement ring. When Clare finds Gus poisoned behind his West Village workshop, she won’t rest until she uncovers who may have done it and why. Her search uncovers a decades-old family scandal, a charming jewel thief, a shocking inheritance, and a deadly adversary.

Best of all, Dead Cold Brew is embedded with twists, turns, and wonderful secrets about New York City that we’ve discovered over the years—from an exclusive room in the legendary 21 Club, to the underbelly of the city’s Diamond District, to a hidden train platform beneath the Waldorf-Astoria.

THE RECIPES!

Food is always a fun part of our Coffeehouse Mysteries, and we’ve included some of our favorite recipes in the appendix of Dead Cold Brew. A few were even inspired by Clare’s visit to New York’s famous 21 Club, a Prohibition-era restaurant that still serves movie stars and presidents. See descriptions and photos of these recipes and many more in our Free Recipe Guide. Print it out, and you have an instant, illustrated recipe section for your book.

Click here for our Free Recipe Guide.

If you are new to our Coffeehouse Mystery series, don’t hesitate to pick up Dead Cold Brew. Marc and I always strive to give new readers enough background to enjoy every book in our series as a stand-alone. And if you like it, you have 15 more in the series to enjoy.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR CLEO COYLE?

For those of you wondering what’s next for Clare (and Cleo), we’re pleased to announce that we’ve already begun development on our 17th Coffeehouse Mystery with our longtime publisher, Berkley of Penguin Random House.

We’re also finishing up a new entry in our Haunted Bookshop Mystery series with Berkley, and we’ll be releasing fun, little excerpts from the book in our coming newsletters. The truth is we haven’t published a new Haunted Bookshop Mystery for several years—frankly, the reasons were personal (deaths in our families and health issues). Life happens, as they say, and it happens for writers too. We sincerely thank our readers and our publisher for their patience with us.

We assure you all, however, the “spirit” was always with us—and still is! We love Jack Shepard, our PI Ghost, and the young New England widow who runs the bookshop he haunts (both of whom we created way back in 2003) and we look forward to getting the unlikely duo back to work on perplexing criminal cases. The 6th title in the series, The Ghost and the Bogus Bestseller, is scheduled for release next year. To learn more about our second mystery series, originally published under the name Alice Kimberly, visit the Haunted Bookshop page of our website by clicking here.

Until we see you again, we hope you enjoy the books we’ve published thus far. We hope you’ll support our ongoing work by buying Dead Cold Brew—or borrowing it from your local library. We also hope you’ll stay in touch because we love to share new recipes, fun info, and videos on our website, Facebook page, and in our newsletters. May you always read with joy!

Synopsis

From Cleo Coyle, the New York Times bestselling author of Dead to the Last Drop, comes a gripping new entry in the “highly satisfying”* Coffeehouse Mystery series. (*Publishers Weekly)

THE PERFECT PROPOSAL LEADS TO A CHILLING COLD CASE…

Coffeehouse manager Clare Cosi sheds tears of joy when her NYPD detective boyfriend surprises her with an engagement ring. But her bridal bliss is put on hold when a chilling mystery brings a wave of deadly danger to those she holds dear…

After everything Clare and Mike have been through, they deserve a little bit of happily ever after. So when Mike decides to put a ring on Clare’s finger, Clare’s eccentric octogenarian employer is there to help. She donates the perfect coffee-colored diamonds to include in the setting and the name of a world-famous jeweler who happens to be an old family friend. But while the engagement is steeped in perfection, the celebration is not long lived.

First, a grim-faced attorney interrupts their party with a mysterious letter bequeathing a strange, hidden treasure to Clare’s daughter. Next, the renowned jeweler who designed Clare’s ring is found poisoned in his shop. Both events appear to be connected to a cold case murder involving a sunken ship, an Italian curse, a suspiciously charming jewel thief, and a shocking family secret. With deadly trouble brewing, Clare must track down clues in some of New York’s most secret places before an old vendetta starts producing fresh corpses.

With recipes to die for, including how to make cold-brew coffee at home!

Dollycas’s Thoughts

This series just keeps getting better and better!

In this installment the authors take us back in time to connect a present mystery to a very old mystery.  A jeweler is found unconscious and a letter is delivered that brings family secrets to light. What does a sunken ship and a precious jewel that supposedly went down with it have to do with the happenings today? All this just as Mike finally pops to question to Clare.  Congratulations are definitely in order but first Clare is on the trail trying to determine what it all means before more people end up dead.

Dead Cold Brew is the 16th installment in this long running series and it is still brewing at a fevered pitch. These characters are so strong, current and real. The drama starts with  an event that could be ripped from real life headlines. There is a sniper gunning down cops, thankfully only wounding them, but Mike’s unit is one of the group’s being targeted. Clare is also working with her ex Matt find on who targeted his godfather after he is found poisoned in his home. Clare fears the cases may be related.

The story is very fast paced, so many things are happening but these authors are pros, the drama does not overwhelm the reader.  We are drawn in a clues are solved and twists take us in different directions. I loved the way the history of Matt’s family is integral the the story. Clare is so close to her ex mother in law and the woman has been so generous to Clare it was wonderful to get some of her back story. There is also part of the story the reminds me of my son and that made the book extra special for me. All this together makes this an extremely hard book to put down.

I now have a new book that is my favorite in this series.

The special thing is that the authors give us plenty of details so no matter whether you have read this series from the start, or missed a couple in the middle or if this is your first time visiting with Clare and her friends you won’t be lost or feel like you have missed something. I can’t promise that you won’t want to go back and read this series from the start after reading this one. In fact I am almost positive you will. I think you will love these characters and want to read everything that you can about them.

Oh and don’t forget the recipes. The fantastic recipes.

Brew yourself a nice cup of coffee and sit back and enjoy Dead Cold Brew!

cozy wednesday 2013 640

Welcome to Cozy Wednesday!

I am so excited to have Cleo here today to tel you all about her new book!
Escape to Washington with Cleo Coyle and
Coffeehouse Mystery sleuth Clare Cosi #Giveaway, too!

Cleo-Coyle_Dead-to-The-Last-Drop-CoverWhat would you do if a handsome federal agent burst into your shop, offered you his hand, and told you: “Your life is in danger, and you must come away with me now, no questions asked.”

If you’re coffeehouse manager Clare Cosi, and the agent is decorated Detective Mike Quinn, on special assignment with the US Justice Department, you would take his hand and go.

A divorced, single mom in her forties, Clare Cosi is a coffeehouse manager by day, a relentless snoop by night. Dead to the Last Drop marks her 15th adventure, and Marc and I are excited about taking her to our nation’s capital to solve a capital case—one that involves the disappearance of the President’s college-age daughter and the death of a suspicious State Department employee.

If you’re a newcomer to our series, you should have no trouble reading our latest mystery as a stand-alone book. Mike’s story and Clare’s intertwine, putting them both on the run as they attempt to find the President’s daughter, solve a puzzling murder, and remove themselves from two most-wanted lists.

The plot is an exciting escape in itself, but so is the setting. Many of the twists and turns were inspired by my own past experiences while living, studying, and working in Washington.

Now Marc and I invite you to escape with Clare to…

White-House

White House photo courtesy HiraV, Wiki Commons

THE WHITE HOUSE

Clare makes two trips to this grand destination, one at the request of the First Lady, who shares a private lunch with her in the Diplomatic Reception Room, a magnificent oval-shaped space famously redecorated by Jacqueline Kennedy and historically used by President Franklin D. Roosevelt for his fireside chats.

Cox's-Row-LC

GEORGETOWN

This picturesque Washington neighborhood boasts some of the finest examples of Federal period architecture in the country. Thomas Jefferson, Alexander Graham Bell, and John F. Kennedy are among the neighborhood’s past residents. As for our amateur sleuth, Clare lands a posh housesitting gig on “Cox’s Row” in a charming Georgetown mansion rumored to be part of the Underground Railroad.

Ruby-Slippers

Dorothy’s Ruby Slippers courtesy Wiki Commons

THE SMITHSONIAN

A glittering black-tie party brings Clare to “America’s Attic,” the beloved nickname of our favorite Smithsonian museum, The National Museum of American History. That’s the scene depicted on the cover of Dead to the Last Drop, where Clare witnesses a fateful meeting in front of Dorothy’s famous ruby slippers from The Wizard of Oz, one of many fascinating exhibits that celebrate American culture, creativity, and cuisine. Yes, cuisine! As a master roaster and expert on the bean, Clare is even asked to contribute her ideas to one of the museum’s temporary exhibits, Coffee and the Presidency.

The-Jazz-SpaceTHE JAZZ SPACE

Cleo-Coyle-Black-Magic-Cake

While this location in our mystery may be fictional, it’s based on an actual, legendary jazz club in DC called Blues Alley. The delectable menu of our fictional Jazz Space becomes an important plot point in Dead to the Last Drop. Check out the book’s appendix for more than 25 delicious recipes, including an outstanding version of Black Magic Cake with a chocolate frosting to die for. And watch for the opening of our virtual Jazz Space on the web.

There are many more fascinating locations in Dead to the Last Drop. Marc and I sincerely hope you will pick up the book for a great escape!

Thanks for dropping by today and thanks especially to Dollycas for being such a kind hostess. May you read (and eat) with joy!

After the White House asks coffeehouse manager and master roaster Clare Cosi to consult on the coffee service for a Rose Garden Wedding, she discovers a historic pot was used as a CIA “dead drop” decades before. Now long-simmering secrets boil over, scalding Clare and the people around her…

Clare’s visit to the nation’s capital is off to a graceful start. Her octogenarian employer is bunking with her in a charming Georgetown mansion, and she’s invited to work with a respected curator on the Smithsonian’s culinary salute to coffee in America.

Unfortunately, Clare’s new Village Blend DC is struggling to earn a profit–until its second floor jazz club attracts a high-profile fan, the college-age daughter of the U.S. President. Clare’s stock rises as the First Lady befriends her, but she soon learns a stark lesson: Washington can be murder.

First a stylish State Department employee suspiciously collapses in her coffeehouse. Then the President’s daughter goes missing. Is she a runaway bride or is something more sinister in play? After another deadly twist, Clare is on the run with her NYPD detective boyfriend. Branded an enemy of the state, she must piece together clues and uncover the truth before her life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness come to a bitter end.

Includes great American recipes!

Dollycas’s Thoughts

This book is amazing to the last word!

Clare Cosi, Master Roaster Extraordinaire, has come to Washington D.C. to get Village Blend DC up on it’s feet. She struggles to get control of the kitchen from a chef with a very high opinion of himself and tries to find a way for the jazz club portion to make a profit. Enter a college student who plays like a dream. When Clare finds out the young lady is the daughter of the President she knows there may be an issue with her continuing to play at Village Blend but she never imagined the way things would spiral out of her control.

Brew a full pot of coffee and be prepared for an all-nighter when you start reading Dead to the Last Drop. Cleo Coyle has written her best book yet and that is saying a lot because every story in this series is excellent.

Clare takes us all over DC, The White House, The Smithsonian, a beautiful mansion in Georgetown. She also travels around some less noteworthy parts of the area as she tries to solve the mysteries that have surrounded her.

This story is jam-packed with drama, action, and mayhem. It all happens at a pretty fast pace too. Intermixed with all the havoc is wonderful food and music. I could almost hear the band, smell the coffee and taste the glorious food.

Clare’s boyfriend, Detective Mike Quinn, is still working with the FBI in Washington. This is a good thing because they both need each other as things start to get crazy. Employees from New York come down to help with a major event and that includes Clare’s ex, Matt. We also meet some Washington elite, the First Family, and some of the White House staff. Again these characters leap off the pages.

If you are new to the series it is not too late to jump in, each story contains enough detail that will get you up to speed in no time. If you are already a fan you are probably waiting very impatiently for your pre-ordered copy to arrive. December 1 will be here soon. I will also add a book is a great holiday gift idea, coffee/cozy mystery buffs will love this story.

This story has earned my Paradise rating. Its contents are truly off the charts!

When coffeehouse manager turned amateur sleuth Clare Cosi roasts “magic” beans for a Fairy Tale Fall event, she brews up a vision that leads to a sleeping beauty in Central Park; a big, bad wolf of Wall Street; and an East Side enclave with storybook secrets…

Fairy tale fever has descended on New York City. Broadway fans are flocking to Red Riding Hood: The Musical; museums are exhibiting art inspired by the Brothers Grimm; and Clare Cosi and her merry band of baristas give their coffee truck a “Jack and the Beanstalk” makeover for a Central Park festival. Clare’s coffee hunter ex-husband contributes a bag of African beans with alleged magical properties. His octogenarian mother entertains customers with readings of the grinds, but Clare remains skeptical–until she receives a vision that helps her find a young model’s body in the park’s woods.

The police dismiss “sleeping beauty” as the victim of a drug overdose. Then Clare uncovers evidence that points to a list of suspects–from a New York Giant to quite a few wicked witches–and a cold case murder that reaches back to the Cold War. Now Clare is really in the woods with a dangerous predator on her heels and an investigation that leads from a secret Prince Charming Club right back to her own NYPD detective boyfriend. If she doesn’t solve this mystery, those magic beans predict an unhappy ending.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

This was an truly enchanting story and so much fun to read! I stayed up until early in the morning reading telling myself “just one more chapter” again and again. It is stories like this one that give readers like me “book hangovers” but they are so worth it.

Clare and the Village Blend crew are taking part in the Fairy Tale Fall Event in Central Park. The  coffee truck has a Jack and A Beanstalk theme complete with magic coffee beans and coffee grind readings. All is going well until Clare’s ex-husband is pulled in to replace a Prince Charming that failed to show up at the festival. He is paired with a beautiful princess for most of the day and then she goes missing. The search is on until they find the “sleepy beauty” in the dense part of woods in the park. Only she is not sleeping, she is dead and Clare’s ex becomes the prime suspect in her demise. The magic coffee beans and the visions they give Clare not only helped find the missing princess but they may help her to find the real killer.

So much happens in this story but it unfolds so naturally it is not overwhelming at all. The clues lead to a secret club and a cold case murder. Clare’s boyfriend, Detective Mike Quinn, is on temporary assignment in Washington D.C. but he is still head of a task force for the New York Police Department so he is up to speed on this case. In fact his ex-wife may even be involved since the princess who died was also working as a mother’s helper for her taking care of his kids. Coyle has woven quite a tangled web in this mystery linking people and events together you would never imagine and Clare is right in the middle of it all.

There are also things going on outside the main mystery. The subplots deal with some Village Blend employee drama and decision Clare is wrestling with. Matt and Clare may not be romantically involved anymore but they do work well together. I really admire the way the authors have thought outside of the box and let their characters evolve in many directions. It keeps this series fresh and each book better than the last.

This is a must read for cozy lovers. Whether you have read all the books in this series or this is your first Cofffeehouse Mystery I just know you will love this story. Just a little warning – this is not a book you can read a few chapters and set it aside. This writing team uses the same technique as suspense/thriller authors like James Patterson. Short chapters that lead right into the next one and the next one and the next one and before you know you are at the end. So don’t start this book if you have to work the next morning. This is the perfect book for a lazy weekend day snuggled up in front of your fireplace in a comfy chair. 10 Starfish!!

cozy wednesday 2013 640Welcome to Cozy Wednesday!!

Today I am super excited to welcome Cleo Coyle to Escape With Dollycas!!

A Cozy Cup of Coffee by Cleo Coyle

Alice-Alfonsi-and-Marc-Cerasini-Cleo-Coyle-Central-Park-NYCLike my husband (and partner in crime-writing), I grew up in a small Western Pennsylvania town among a family of food-loving Italian Americans. Although Marc and I were raised in the same region, we didn’t meet until we finished college and moved to New York City. Here is where we fell in love and made our home.

Because we grew up outside NYC, we have a special relationship with the city. In some ways we’re tourists who never left. So when we want to get away from our daily grind, we do what 50 million other tourists do each year: We escape to New York!

Not only do we roam our resident city for fun, we explore it for research. Our readers may recognize many of our Coffeehouse Mystery settings below. So come with us now on our little tour of the Big Apple. We’ll start with…

Greenwich-Village-courtesy-Wiki-Commons.jpg

Greenwich-Village-courtesy-Wiki-Commons.jpg

GREENWICH VILLAGE

The winding lanes, secluded gardens, quaint cafés, and historically preserved townhouses make this neighborhood one of the most picturesque in the entire city, which is why we chose to give our amateur sleuth, Clare Cosi, a home here, above a century-old coffeehouse called the Village Blend.

As we all know, a cozy mystery series is typically set in a little village—and, in many ways, Greenwich Village is exactly that. Marc and I know first-hand what it’s like to live in the real NYC, among families and hard-working folks. Like residents of small towns, we New Yorkers become quite attached to our neighborhoods. We join community boards, walk our dogs, and throw block parties and street fairs. We also become friendly with—even depend upon—the people who run our local stores, restaurants, and libraries (again, just like residents in small towns).
What else makes our series cozy? The characters. In every book, our characters show love and support for each other. From our coffeehouse manager to her quirky band of baristas, the goodness of our cast is the light that shines through the darkest New York night.

Bryant Park Carousel courtesy Wiki Commons

BRYANT PARK

Of course, we can’t argue the fact that New York has seen many dark nights (and days), but nothing symbolizes its rebirth more than Bryant Park, a gorgeous public space located in the heart of Midtown Manhattan, right behind the main branch of the majestic New York Public Library (a worthy destination in itself).
With its rows of London plane trees, Bryant Park is an urban paradise. Don’t miss the lovely hand-painted carousel. We used this very merry-go-round as a setting for murder in our 12th Coffeehouse Mystery, Holiday Buzz. And yes, we confess to staging a little mayhem at this location in our 3rd series entry, Latte Trouble.

Rock Center Photo courtesy Wiki Commons

Rock Center Photo courtesy Wiki Commons

ROCKEFELLER CENTER

Clare Cosi and her ex-husband, coffee hunter Matteo Allegro, taught their daughter to ice skate under the famous Golden Prometheus statue at Rockefeller Center. In Murder by Mocha, Clare discovers a crime victim at the Rock Center’s Loft and Garden, an incredible open, rooftop space high above Fifth Avenue, which features a spectacular view of the spires of St. Patrick’s Cathedral right next door.

Statue of Liberty Photo by Cleo Coyle

THE STATUE OF LIBERTY

Lady Liberty is an awe-inspiring sight, whether you’re gazing at her grand visage from Battery Park in Lower Manhattan, the deck of the Staten Island Ferry—or the icy waters of New York Bay! When Clare Cosi is thrown into those frigid waters in Holiday Grind, she uses Miss Liberty as a mental lifeline. Lucky for Clare, a New York Fire Department boat comes to her rescue, which leads to complications in Roast Mortem, the book that follows.

High Line courtesy Wiki Commons

High Line courtesy Wiki Commons

THE HIGH LINE

The entire city is excited about the High Line. Once an eyesore, it began as an elevated railroad bridge abandoned to rust and graffiti. Now this mile-long walkway is a lovely green space on Manhattan’s West Side. Marc and I used it as a setting in our latest Coffeehouse Mystery, Billionaire Blend. The elevated park has even spurred a real estate boom around it, despite the fact that park goers can easily peer through nearby apartment windows. (Hmm…that gives us another idea. Remember Rear Window?)

Belvedere Castle by Alice Alfonsi (Cleo Coyle)

Belvedere Castle by Alice Alfonsi (Cleo Coyle)

BELVEDERE CASTLE, CENTRAL PARK

The Central Park Zoo, Shakespeare in the Park, and Strawberry Fields are famous. But lesser known attractions are just as charming. The Alice in Wonderland Statue, for example, is a whimsical delight; and Belvedere Castle, a fairy tale folly, crowns one of the highest points in Central Park. Below the castle you’ll find The Ramble, a tangled stretch of wild woodlands and twisty paths dotted with rustic stone arches, mossy tunnels, and ornate bridges. Part forest, part fairyland, the Ramble is an easy place to get happily lost, or set a crime scene, which is precisely what we do in our forthcoming Coffeehouse Mystery, Once Upon a Grind (December, 2014).

 And that concludes our tour!

Dollycas’s Thoughts

This was a very entertaining read.

Coyle has a great crew of regular characters that readers have come to love more with each new story. In this installment she adds Eric Thorner, his sister, his business associates and his rival.

Clare and Matt get caught up in all the drama of Thorn Enterprises and realize that are also putting themselves in great danger. The author has brewed a very tight plot line that really captivated this reader.

The dialogue is smart and full of humor.

I love the way the city of New York is described especially the fancy restaurant Eric took Clare to for dinner. I felt like I was across the room taking in the whole experience. I also enjoyed a surprise destination Eric arranges for Clare too!

Yes, this is the 13th book in the series and I must admit I need to catch up on a couple of the ones I have missed but the author writes these stories in such a way that they can be read as stand alone. So if this is a new series to you or you have missed a book or two don’t fret, you will be engaged in this story very quickly. But then I just know you are going to want to read them all.

Oh and did I mention the recipes!!! They will grab you too!!
