Welcome to Ramsey, New York – a small town full of characters. Some are looking for love, some most definitely are not. Sooner or later, everyone finds his or her happily ever after.
Camille Quinn has had her heart broken twice and she isn’t interested in finding love again. She’s busy raising her two children, Brandon and Molly. When Maxwell Steward, the first man who broke her heart, thirty years earlier, comes back to Ramsey, all she wants to do is avoid him.
When Brandon manages to crash into Maxwell’s expensive sports car during a driving lesson, avoiding the man becomes impossible. The Ramsey Summer Fair throws Camille and Maxwell together and brings back memories for Camille. Maxwell seems more than happy to rekindle their friendship, seemingly not realizing how badly he hurt her in the past.
Camille isn’t interested in being friends with her former boyfriend. She’s much more concerned with guarding her heart.
Dollycas’s Thoughts
Divorced, mother of two teenagers, Camille Quinn, is concentrating on her children after her heart had been broken twice. Matthew Steward is responsible for breaking her heart thirty years ago. Now Camille learns the man has come back to Ramsey, and she intends to avoid him in every way possible.
Then, Camille’s son/student driver, Brandon, takes a turn too wide and runs into Maxwell’s fancy sports car. She is no longer going to be able to avoid the man.
The Ramsey Summer Fair is a big deal filled with tradition and fun. It has grown over the years, but it’s not big enough for Camille and Maxwell to escape each other. Soon, he is spending time on the carnival rides with her kids and appears to want to be at least friends. He hurt her badly all those years ago, and she isn’t interested in being friends or anything else with him.
I usually read cozy mysteries written by this author, but I needed a light read, and this story fit the bill.
Camille Quinn had no interest in falling in love again and cast an iron barrier around her heart. She came across as rude at first, but she was trying to protect herself. Maxwell had evolved into a successful businessman at a point in his life when he was not quite ready to relinquish the reins but was prepared to take a step back. Coming back to Ramsey seemed like a good idea. I found these characters interesting, but I was aching for more depth. Maxwell was laid back, and Camille was uptight. Her ex-husband’s trying to get back in the picture didn’t help, but I liked the information that came out now that the children are older.
You expect a happy ending in books like this, but for me, it happened rather quickly. It would have been nice to have an epilogue, 6 months or a year later, to tell us if Camille and Maxwell were making the romance work and how her children were handling it. Maybe they will be mentioned in future books in this series.
Second Chances was an easy, light-hearted read. A little predictable as usual in this genre, but very enjoyable. I will be adding the next book in this series, Second Act, to my wish list.
