Mischief in Moonstone Series, Novella 2: Misbehavin’ in Moonstone
Romance Novella
2nd in Series
Setting – Wisconsin
Writers Exchange E-Publishing (March 14, 2017)
Print Length: 93 pages
Kindle ASIN: B06XNPQLJ3

This delightful series focuses on the humorous mystery and romantic adventures of the kind folks who live in the environs of a small village nestled on Lake Superior in northern Wisconsin. Along the way in the series, silkie chickens, a giant prehistoric beaver skeleton, a kidnapped reindeer, and other flora and fauna contribute to the amusing mischief and mayhem.

When the men of Moonstone suddenly seem to be off fishing a lot in the evenings, thus cutting down on her new restaurant’s business, chef Kirsten Peplinski becomes suspicious. She discovers a topless touring boat has set up business in Lake Superior, just outside the jurisdiction of Moonstone. She sets out to give a “dressing down” to the boat’s owner, but Jonathon VanBrocklin kidnaps her, having “undressing” and marrying her on his mind.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Our last visit to Moonstone was at Christmastime, this time a floating topless touring boat creates havoc as all the male residents have “gone fishing” several days in a row. The female population had no idea what they were really up to until they promoted Kirsten Peplinski to temporary mayor and send her out to see what exactly “is biting”. What she finds is Jonathon VanBrocklin and he just may be too hot to handle.

This was a fun mini escape on a Sunday afternoon. The characters were engaging and funny. The romance sizzled at just the right temperature. Again, as with the first novella of this series, When Rudolph was Kidnapped, this story has a Lifetime or Hallmark movie feel. Being set in my home state of Wisconsin was just the thing to hook me from beginning to end.

I enjoyed Christine DeSmet’s cozy mysteries as well.

First Flurries

From New York Times bestselling author Joanne DeMaio comes a novel snow-dusted with love and possibility.

Lindsey Haynes’ father once gave her a snow globe with the note: “Unsure where to go? Give a little shake … and your heart will always know.” On a whim, those words lead her to the quaint New England town of Addison. It’s a place straight out of a storybook with its twinkling town green, decorated Main Street, and secluded lakeside cabin community.

But an encounter with a dejected doctor named Greg Davis turns Lindsey’s days upside down, much like a snow globe in motion. With a little nudge from endearing townsfolk, and a few chance meetings of their own, a magical flurry of emotions suddenly swirls around them.

First Flurries is an enchanting story about finding love and home when you’re not even looking. So cozy up and settle in with a tale that will simply capture your holiday heart.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

We return to Addison and Snowflake Lake right before the holidays. Lindsey Haynes has just pulled into town with her unique little shop on wheels. Her Uncle Gus manages the cabins on SnowFlake Lake and he has the perfect spot to park her Tiny House/Shop when it isn’t parked on the square for the upcoming Christmas event. She is thrilled her snow globe directed her to this charming little town. The snow globe, a gift from her father came with a note – “Unsure where to go? Give a little shake … and your heart will always know.” It hasn’t steered her wrong yet.

Dr. Greg Davis has had some bad luck in the romance department so this year he has vowed to turn over a new leaf. He doesn’t need to be in a relationship to enjoy the holidays.

Greg and Lindsey happen to meet just when the first flurries start to fall in Addison. Their worlds get all shook up and it may never be the same, especially with a little nudge here and a little push there.

I know when I reach for a book by this author I am in for a delightful story so I plan accordingly. Looking at the cover I knew I was going to need a cup or two of hot cocoa and a blanket to snuggle in. The weather here had just turned chilly so it was cooperating as well.

Lindsey and her tiny house and snow globe grabbed me right away. I love tiny houses and I could easily imagine living in one myself, only stationary, not traveling the country on a trailer. I must say it is a fantastic idea for a person like Lindsay.

We met the Davis family before and this time it is Greg’s story. He decides to reinvent himself, not be so uptight. Changes the way he dresses, quits shaving and trades in his sensible car for a Mustang . . . in the winter . . . in Connecticut.

These two are destined for each other but it isn’t going to be easy.

I adore the way that Ms. DeMaio tells a story. Everything about her characters and their interactions is believable and genuine.  Lindsey’s positive free spirit attitude is refreshing juxtaposed against Greg’s somewhat curmudgeonly take on life. The story unfolds at a comfortable pace and is very well written. She has set this series in a charming locale. The snow globe brings a little magic to the wonderful holiday read. Every scene is described vividly painting delightful images in the mind.

Addison, Connecticut is a truly wondrous place to spend the holidays. Romance and Christmas cheer abound. This story will leave your heart warmed and a huge smile on your face.

While there are recurring characters all of the books in this series can be read on their own, but you will want to read them all! I highly recommend this snowy escape.

from my To-Be-Read bookshelf.

Don’t panic, it is still me and I haven’t given up cozies. Before starting this blog I used to read quite a few Harlequin Romance novels even the Blaze titles like this one. To Complete my Alphabet Soup Challenge and the What’s in A Name Challenge I needed a title that began with “Z”. While searching I found I already had this book downloaded on my Kindle, so I went for the Contemporary Steamy Romance to complete both challenges. A little spice was a nice change.

Zero Control
Contemporary Romance
Setting – Great Britain
Harlequin Blaze; (October 15, 2009)
Mass Market Paperback: 224 pages
ISBN-10: 0373795106
ISBN-13: 978-0373795109
Kindle ASIN: B002SVQDXM

Eros Vacations presents castles, Shakespeare…and sizzlin’ sex!

Live it up—literary style! Guests are whisked away to Great Britain for two weeks of luxury adventure, history and plenty of naughty possibilities! Whether it’s an illicit tower tryst, a romantic boat ride or even some hot dungeon action, your pleasure is our concern….

But both executive assistant Roxie Stanley and undercover security agent Dougal Lockhart have their own motives for this vacation. Except that sex—mind-meltingly great sex—is the only thing either can think about. It’s forbidden. It’s tantalizingly irresistible. And they’re losing control…over and over and over!

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Undercover security agent Dougal Lockhart has been hired by Euros Vacations to find out who is sabotaging their resorts and tours. Roxie Stanley is on the tour as a mole for one of Eros competitors. They meet on the plane from the U.S. to Great Britain and they are immediately attracted to each other. He has signed a morality clause and is not supposed to fraternize with guests. She needs to complete her mission or she won’t get a promotion. A promotion she needs to pay for her sister’s college tuition. Both of them are keeping secrets but it isn’t long before they can deny their passion. What will happen at the end of this fantasy vacation? Will they tell each other the truth? Can they really build a relationship after just knowing each other for two weeks?

So this story does have a mystery, who is sabotaging Eros Vacations. Are they just pranks or is someone trying to take the company down?

After that, it is a hot, steamy, close to an erotic story that will have you needing a cold beverage and maybe cranking up the air conditioner. I was surprised by the daring sex scenes. A little bondage in a dungeon, quite a bit a role-playing, I mean the guy was dressed as Shakespeare, ala Shakespeare in Love complete with tight leather pants, a couple of encounters in public places, and some sizzling hot romance in her cottage.

I did enjoy that there was a story between all the sex. Dougal seemed always to be one step behind the saboteur, even thinking Roxie could be the one causing trouble. They also step in to help to help with a fencing demonstration when the people hired were unable to perform.

As expected from Harlequin Blaze, this story brought the heat. A spicy read for a cold autumn night. My only complaint, the mystery was not solved by the end of the book.

I purchased this book last year at Christmas time and saved it to read this year to help me get into the Christmas spirit.

Mischief in Moonstone Series: When Rudolph was Kidnapped
Contemporary Fiction/Romance/Mystery
1st in Series
Setting – Wisconsin
Writers Exchange E-Publishing (December 2, 2016)
Print Length: 177 pages
Kindle ASIN: B01N6CLT6M

This delightful series focuses on the humorous mystery and romantic adventures of the kind folks who live in the environs of a small village nestled on Lake Superior in northern Wisconsin. Along the way in the series, silkie chickens, a giant prehistoric beaver skeleton, a kidnapped reindeer, and other flora and fauna contribute to the amusing mischief and mayhem.

When her pet reindeer, Rudolph, is stolen from the live animal holiday display, first-grade teacher Crystal Hagan has a big problem on her hands. Her students fear that Christmas will be canceled. Ironically, the prime suspect is a man who lives in a mansion known as the “North Pole”. And to her shock, Peter LeBarron admits to kidnapping Rudolph and he won’t give him back without some romantic “negotiations”.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Superior, Wisconsin may feel like the North Pole, so the residents of this little town led by first-grade teacher, Crystal Hagan, do all they can to celebrate Christmas in a big way. It starts with a live nativity featuring Crystal’s own reindeer named Rudolph. It takes place in front of a huge mansion, which the children believe is the “North Pole”. But this year Rudolph is stolen from its spot in the manger.  The children are upset because Santa can’t come without Rudolph. Crystal believes the owner of the mansion has stolen her pet, and his son admits it! He promises the reindeer will be returned if his father’s demands are met. This leads to some interesting negotiations and activities including Crystal’s first graders.

This story is perfect for a Hallmark holiday movie.

Mayhem and toe-curling romance abound in this little town on chilly Lake Superior.

The characters span all generations. Crystal meets Peter while looking for her missing reindeer. She can’t believe his father, a man who used to dress up as Santa, would take her reindeer, but the man has changed over the years, and even more just over the past few weeks. Peter has left the warmth of his Arizona home to try to figure out why his dad is selling his home and his business. All the characters are realistic and with being a novella we need to get to know them fast. The author does a wonderful job of bringing them to life.

A missing reindeer is a cute little mystery. The mayhem that takes place leading up to getting him back is heartwarming and at times really funny.

The romance, again because of the length of the story also happens quickly but not easily.

Ms. DeSmet has crafted a wonderful Christmas story. It helped to get me into the Christmas spirit and may become an annual read. Seriously Hallmark…movie, I am just saying. 🙂

Barking Up the Wrong Tree

(A Bluff Point Romance)
Women’s Fiction/Romance/Humor
2nd in Series
Setting – Maine
Berkley (September 26, 2017)
Mass Market Paperback: 336 pages

LOVE IS A FOUR-LEGGED WORD.

Carly DeCusati returned home to Bluff Point, Maine, with her tail between her legs. But she’s determined to get her life back on track—and that means finding new homes for the elderly golden retriever and overly talkative parrot she inherited before her old life fell apart.

Enter physical therapist and hot one-night stand James Sinclair. James doesn’t care that Carly doesn’t do relationships. He is determined to win her heart, promising to help her with the pets if she’ll just give him the time of day.

Carly agrees to date the irresistible James, and, for the first time in years, she’s dreaming of a happily ever after. But James has secrets, and if he can’t open up to Carly, their future could go to the dogs…

Dollycas’s Thoughts

All the characters I loved in the first book are back. This time the focus is on Carly. Carly DeCusati does NOT do relationships. One night, the guy never sleeps over, and she never sees them again. That all could change when she has moved back to Bluff Point and meets James Sinclair. A physical therapist who doesn’t know about Carly’s rules. She has enough to do trying to find a new job and finding homes for a couple a pets left to her in an old neighbor’s will. She doesn’t have time to deal with a guy wanting to date her, even if the sex was absolutely amazing. James has some secrets too, he just doesn’t feel ready to share with Carly.

I loved this story as much as the first book in this series.

Jenn McKinlay creates such strong characters of all types whether she is writing a romance or a mystery. I always am very engaged with them and want to know more. The human characters in this story are terrific but their pets are fabulous too. James has adopted Hot Wheels, a Basset Hound, he has a little mobility problem. Carly inherited Saul, a lovable elderly Golden Retriever and Ike, a foul mouthed parrot that had me in stitches.

I was laughing from the beginning when Carly arrived home and her parents just jumped in their car and took off for Florida. Leaving Carly to deal with her sister who is still living with their parents. The sisters do not get along at all so I knew this going to be very interesting. I was thrilled that Mac’s aunts were also part of this story and really living life to the fullest.

Carly and James romance was steamy and sweet from the start. Their dialogues are fun, kinda snarky, but very believable, and their kisses were toe curling. The morning after their first night together was hilarious. I was laughing out loud and couldn’t stop. How could she think she could walk away from the hunk of burning love? 🙂  I love the way James just didn’t give up though. He was a man with a mission and he was going to make Carly see she could have a real, adult, relationship. I liked James’ story, his secrets, his family. This not only gave his character depth but it gave the entire story more strength as well.

I love a story with a happy ending. I love that there is another book coming soon in this series so I will get to visit these characters again. Every Dog Has His Day comes out January 2, 2018.

Fun, lighthearted, friendship and family with just enough drama to get you invested from the beginning to the end. A positively delightful read!!

Fall in love with a little help from man’s best friend in New York Times bestselling author Jenn McKinlay’s contemporary romance debut.

Mackenzie “Mac” Harris fled her hometown of Bluff Point, Maine, after being left at the altar—and seeking solace in the arms of her best friend’s off-limits brother. Now, seven years later, she’s back to attend her best friend’s wedding—safe, or so she thinks, from the mistakes of her youth.

But Gavin Tolliver has never forgotten the woman who has always held his heart. And when Mac rescues a stray puppy named Tulip, only Gavin, the town’s veterinarian, can help. With a little assistance from Tulip, Gavin vows to make Mac realize that their feelings are more than just puppy love…

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Back in 2011 I found some romance novels written by Jennifer McKinlay written for Harlequin. I am not sure when they were originally released but they were re released as e-books in 2014. I really enjoyed them so I was very excited when I heard she was starting a new romantic comedy series. I was over the moon to receive an early copy of the first book to review.

We meet Mackenzie “Mac” Harris as she returns to Bluff Point after leaving seven years prior when her groom left her standing at the altar. She returns to be her best friend, Emma’s maid of honor and hopes her past won’t rise up to smack her in the face.  Gavin Tolliver, Emma’s little brother, was there for her when her wedding fell apart and has never gotten over the feelings he had for her. They reconnect because of the wedding but also because of Tulip, a stray puppy Mac rescues. It’s all About A Dog until suddenly it isn’t.

I loved, Loved, LOVED this story!

Mac and Gavin along with all their family and friends are wonderfully written. The friendships both new and old come together so naturally. Mac’s aunts were my favorite characters next to Mac and Gavin. These senior citizens are going through their second phase of being teenagers. Their antics will have you smiling ear to ear.

Being a dog lover I was taken by Tulip the moment Mac found her. As you may imagine by the title she is a key character to the entire story. She is just so darn lovable. If I didn’t have two dogs already I would rush right out to adopt one just like her.

Gavin and Mac have a secret. Something she has tried to forget and one Gavin wants her to remember very clearly. Emma has not had much luck in her relationships and tries to fight her feelings for Gavin but sparks just seem to fly whenever they are near each other. She even enlists her friends to be buffers and help her to never be alone with him. She is only in town for two weeks, there is no way they can be any more than friends. Yeah, right.

Jenn McKinlay has penned quite a romance with several twists. Lighthearted, funny and romantic. A totally entertaining story of life, love, and friendship.  This series is out to a fabulous start.  I can’t wait for Barking Up the Wrong Tree when it releases on September 26 and then Every Dog Has His Day comes out January 2, 2018.

I highly recommend an escape to Bluff Point soon and often.

Last year 2 of my favorite things came together. I have watched Days Of Our Lives for as long as I can remember. You already know my favorite books to read are cozy mysteries. Last year Alison Sweeney, Sami Brady, on Days of Our Lives entered the cozy world when she portrayed Hannah Swenson in Murder She Baked: Chocolate Chip Cookie Murder on the Hallmark Movie Channel. This movie is based on Joanne  Fluke’s  Hannah Swenson Mystery Series.  The 2nd movie, Murder She Baked: A Plum Pudding Murder Mystery and  the 3rd movie Murder She Baked: A Peach Cobbler Mystery soon followed. In addition to being an actress and a director, producer, and former host of The Biggest Loser, Alison Sweeney is an author. This is her 3rd fiction novel and while not a cozy I have to tell you all about it.

Alex Cleary has careened from one dead-end position to another. But suddenly the ingenious makeup artist finds her distinct talents are valued by none other than lifestyle-empire mogul Hillary P.–renowned for her golden touch in broadcast and print media, as well as for her hair-trigger temper. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to join the daytime television scene that Alex is determined not to screw up.

Then a frank word in the wrong ear puts Alex’s job on the line. Alex anticipates Hillary’s rage, but she can’t believe that this multimillionaire is holding her newest staffer to a nondisclosure agreement that demands reparation of 5 million dollars.

Alex has only 48 hours to repair the damage. And with a vengeful Hillary P. watching the clock, the devil will have her due…

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Again Alison Sweeney takes us behind the scenes, this time we follow make-up artist Alex Cleary as she tries to kick start her career. She is in the right place at the right time and lands a job with Hillary P.  (I would say her empire is striving to be live Oprah Winfrey.) Hillary is not an easy woman to work for, she has a quick temper, demands a lot from her employees and has no problem raging at you when others are present. These traits can cause trouble not only for Hillary but everyone that works for her. Alex is called on the carpet for breaking the terms of her non-disclosure agreement and is on the hook for 5 million dollars! How is Alex going to come up with that kind of money? Is there another way out of this mess?

This was a fast entertaining read. Alex is very personable and very engaging. Her parents had different plans for her life but she is following her dream. Hillary P., is a woman with a rising career and quite a dictator. She rules her life and her employees with an iron fist and steps on or over anyone to advance her career. So of course we readers are rooting for Alex from the get go.

Sweeney has created several other great characters in this story. Alex’s best friend Emma, Billy Fox, an actor Alex meets when he guests on Hillary’s show, her boyfriend, Sean, and her family, plus others Alex meets when she follows Hillary’s show to New York. One who ends up turning Alex’s life inside out.

I enjoyed the way the author brings the madness of Hollywood/New York to life within these pages. I also liked seeing New York through Alex’s eyes. I have never been there myself and think my reactions would be quite the same.

Great characters, a flowing plot, romance, and humor all come together to make this a perfect escape!

perfect 2016

We return to Hope’s Crossing with Lucy Drake. She has come back to take care of her the home left to her by her aunt. While excited to be back she is not excited to see Brendan Caine.  Brenden was married to Lucy’s best friend, Jessie, who recently passed away. They had a little thing before Brendan even met Jessie.  They both remember that steamy hot kiss and while Lucy has been an “aunt” to his kids, they only had to endure each other’s  presence on rare occasions.  Now she is back in Hope’s Crossing and that means trouble with a capital T for both of them.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

I love this series!!

RaeAnne Thayne brings us such terrific characters. Characters that are real and flawed and have issues and in Hope’s Crossing things happen to bring the right people together and overcome any obstacle. Of course there are residents of the town the push and  sometimes shove people together so that can finally let down the walls they have built around their hearts and open their eyes and realize what or who is right in front of them. In this story two children and two little pups are key players. Lucy’s step sister also comes to Hope’s Crossing to shake things up a bit.

I have broke my rule about reading these books in order twice now and am glad I did. I also plan to catch up on the couple I have missed. I was so happy to learn that Christmas in Snowflake Canyon was not the last in the series. These stories have become my go to books when I just need to escape from everyday stress and relax and know there is going to be happy ending.

All of my visits to Hope’s Crossing have been wonderful and I hope I get to visit again very soon as I catch up on the ones I missed.  You can read them order but they do read well as stand alone too. I am really sorry to see this series end but it goes out on a great high note.

Jenn and Greg are enjoying their annual summer getaway to Deia, a village in Majorca off the coast of southern Spain. They are spending lazy days on the beach and afternoon sex in their gorgeous villa.

Everything is wonderful until Emma, Greg teenage daughter, arrives with her boyfriend Nathan. Jenn finds herself immediately drawn to the young man. It is taking all her strength to curb her temptation. Is giving in worth the risk?

Dollycas’s Thoughts

This was an amazing fast read.

The author has given has four very flawed characters. Jenn is bored with her life and even bored with her vacation to this idyllic place. Greg is keeping a secret and seems to really have a problem with a landlord they have known for years. Emma is fifteen, need I say more. In addition to the usual angst of a 15 year old she really has a problem with her step-mom and the divide divide is growing, leading to a tension between Greg and Jenn. Then there is Nathan. This young man is quite a piece a work. Sadly I really didn’t like any of them but their story is very compelling and I just couldn’t stop reading. Which may be exactly what the author wanted.

She describes the panoramas of Spain beautifully. She painted a picture of an awful storm so clearly I could almost feel the wind and rain. She also tells the sexual parts of the story very graphically so if you are uncomfortable with that this is not the book for you.

The plot had several twists that drew me even further into the story. There were several times I wanted to just jump into the book and shake Jenn and tell her what she was doing was wrong. But it was like watching a scary movie and you cover your eyes so you can’t see the frightening parts but they still happen. The ending surprised me, a shocking twist. Helen Walsh wrote a great story but the ending was masterful.

I think this is a story people really like or absolutely hate. It was not a perfect escape for me but I definitely want to read more books from this author.

Nancy Herkness invites readers back to Sanctuary, West Virginia, in Book Three of the award-winning Whisper Horse series.

Fleeing professional scandal and a broken engagement, veterinarian Hannah Linden abandons Chicago for the mountain town of Sanctuary, West Virginia, hoping to put her troubles with men and the media behind her. But when she encounters world-famous chef Adam Bosch, she finds herself increasingly drawn to the charming but darkly complex man and his troubled teenage son, Matt. Adam, a recovering alcoholic, fears he can never be a worthy father to the surly, distant boy he has just come to know, and enlists Hannah’s help in his struggle to connect with his son.

Hoping to coax Matt out of his shell, Hannah introduces the boy to an ailing brown pony who has the power to change his view of the world. But can the determined little whisper horse prove to Hannah, Adam, and Matt that they were meant to be a family?

Dollycas’s Thoughts

She did it again. Nancy Herkness continues to write books I quickly find myself lost in. This whole Whisper Horse theme touches me. I wish I had a whisper horse!!

All the main characters in this story are broken. Hannah was blamed for something any caring person who have done and the man that is supposed to love her turns his back on her. Adam had a very rough upbringing and his self esteem is lower than low. He tries to escape into his work but knows something is missing.  Matt just lost his mother and is sent to his father, a man he doesn’t know  at all.  Heck Adam didn’t know about him either.

Herkness has written a wonderful story that is more than just a romance, these three people are almost reborn as they are surrounded by the caring community of Sanctuary, West Virginia. Don’t worry, there are a few steamy romantic scenes too.

The author paints pictures so easily with her  words. I could easily see all three of stories as movies.  I love this escape!!
