Cornbread, Ribs, and Murder
(Chocolate Martini Sisters Mystery)
by Brenda Whiteside and Joyce Proell
It is my pleasure to welcome Brenda Whiteside
to Escape With Dollycas today!
I started life as an artist, but after taking some evening classes in creative writing, just for fun, I discovered I enjoyed filling a blank page with words more than a canvas with paint.
The first few books I published traditionally were romances. I had no idea what a genre was; I just wanted to write people stories. The relationship between a couple and how they interact with others drew me. Of course, that’s romance.
But I soon became bored with the simpler plots and expanded my genre to romantic suspense. I guess I needed more conflict, more chaos—yes, often murder. And I was perfectly happy writing suspense stories with more complicated plots as the years flew by…until an idea popped into my head.
Twice a year, my sister and I celebrate our birthdays at a historic inn in Prescott, Arizona with a chocolate martini. We eventually called ourselves the Chocolate Martini Sisters. That’s when the idea struck. I wanted to write a cozy mystery series with two sisters who did just what we did but solved murder mysteries on their martini weekends. The more I thought about it, the more I knew I wanted a friend in Minnesota to join me in this series. My forte was suspense, and I knew of a very talented mystery writer, my friend Joyce Proell. She agreed, and, voila, the Chocolate Martini Sisters Mystery books took flight. I’m so glad Joyce jumped on board, and I’ve never looked back.
Suspense and mystery, when done right, are two wholly different genres. At times, they are difficult to totally separate. In my suspense books, there are always elements of mystery. A good mystery can have tense, suspenseful moments. The big difference between them is in a suspense story, you know who the villain is, at times from the first page. What he or she intends to do, to who, and when is what makes it a suspense book. In a mystery, the reader is on the journey with the protagonist to discover who the villain is and, unless they can outwit the writer, won’t know until the end when the protagonist finds out. Joyce is our mystery weaver. And it’s great fun when the two sisters, whose personalities are quite different, solve the murder ahead of Chief Homicide Detective Guthrie.
I hope you’ll join us in the fun and have as good a time reading the Chocolate Martini Sisters Mystery books as much as we enjoy writing them. The third book in this amateur sleuths, cozy mystery series, Cornbread, Ribs, and Murder, will have you chuckling and on the edge of your seat as the sisters solve the murder.
Thank you Brenda so much for visiting today!

It’s a rib cookoff…with a recipe for murder.
Nicole Earp and Emma Banefield are celebrating another birthday at the Dulce Inn with the added fun of a rib cookoff in the park. Not only are chocolate martinis in their plans, Nic has her heart set on winning the cornbread contest. But as the excitement bakes, someone is stirring up trouble for the inn and its employees.
Strange occurrences at the Dulce are on the rise. Slashed tires, menacing phone calls, and unsavory characters add a vibe that threatens the sisters’ anticipated fun-filled stay. When the hot-headed hotel owner is caught wielding a bloody letter opener over a dead coworker, the sisters are embroiled in a caper to help the one person who finds their sleuthing as welcomed as a rattlesnake in her bed. But is she innocent?
The Chocolate Martini Sisters are primed to find out. First, they’ll have to eliminate a host of suspects that includes a dishonest restaurant owner, a jilted girlfriend, an ex-wife, the barkeeper, and a masseuse with a crush. If they can stay off the radar of the surly chief homicide detective long enough, they can put out the fire…unless the killer burns them first.
The third book in this amateur sleuths, cozy mystery series will have you chuckling and on the edge of your seat as the sisters solve the murder.
Great Escapes Praise for Cornbread, Ribs, and Murder
(Chocolate Martini Sisters Mystery)
by Brenda Whiteside and Joyce ProellThis was my first introduction to the Chocolate Martini Sisters Mysteries and it was such a fun read. The mystery was solid and had excellent pacing. The many suspects and clues (and red herrings) had me turning the pages quickly, eager to reveal the culprit. While this was my first adventure with Nic and Emma, it certainly won’t be my last!
