Jealousy, hatred and domestic terrorism — how can one little primary in one little town pack such a big punch? By the time election day comes, there may be more than one body on this ballot.

Jake Rand is running for County Attorney in Casper, Wyoming, but someone seems determined to keep him out of office. There’s only a week before voters head to the polls, and it’s shaping up to be a very bad one. Protesters, punches, stabbings and shootings – politics isn’t just personal in Casper, it’s downright deadly!

It isn’t long before the police make an arrest, but Jake isn’t sure they’ve got the right man. He wants to win the election, but sending an innocent man to prison isn’t part of his campaign plan.

Fifth book in The Jake and Emma Mystery Series. Previously released as Body on the Ballot.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

I read the previous books in this series back in 2015 and had this one waiting on my Kindle for too long. To prove that this book and those before it now have new titles and covers. I am glad to get back to this series and happy to see the author recently released another book in the series.

Casper, Wyoming is holding a primary election in the County Attorney race. Jake Rand is running against Clint Taylor. While they are taking part in an intense debate the doors open and 2 men rush in with shots fired and Jake is hit. The police arrive and more shots ring out winging one of the gunmen. As the scene calms down Jake realizes hit was hit by a paintball not a bullet. The police on the scene also find that Detective Mortimer (Mort) Brugnick who was working security the event was shot and killed by a BULLET!

There is a shake-up at the police station that places Detective Matt Joyner on administrative leave right after State Investigator arrives to assist in the case. He can’t just sit on his hands, with a little help from his friends he does some investigating. Was Mort a target? or was Taylor the target? or was it just random? The case leads them to the college but some crazy and dangerous events really twist things up.

All the characters are well-developed and realistic. All the relationships are strong. I really enjoyed the camaraderie of the core characters and the empathy shown throughout the story. Characters fight with emotions and daily life issues along with the effects the murder has on their lives.

I really enjoyed the politics theme in this book.  A current topic complete with protests and rallies. While on a local scale it still escalates to a scary level.

The murder mystery is filled with drama and the author sets a brisk pace. The case is difficult to solve. The police make an arrest but there are so many holes in the case. Thankfully Jake and Matt stuck with it and some surprising secrets are revealed.

Murder Casts the Ballot is a fine addition to this series. I am looking forward to reading Murder Is Forever soon!

Can Norrie stop a murderer’s reign of terroir?

The descent of winter on the Finger Lakes means it’s time for the Wine Trail Association’s Chocolate and Wine Extravaganza. Unfortunately, for screenwriter-turned-reluctant vintner, Norrie Ellington, her Two Witches Winery is co-hosting the festivities. Norrie’s duties include wrangling the three international chocolatiers featured at the event—bitter rivals and industry influencers who can make or break Two Witches.

But the heated competition among the celebrity confectioners soon spills out of the professional arena, and before the Extravaganza is over, one of the cocoa pros is dead, last seen sipping a Two Witches’ Cabernet Sauvignon. With spirits souring at the Extravaganza and her winery on the line, Norrie must hustle to find the uncorked killer before Two Witches’ reputation is crushed once and for all.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Winter weather has hit the Finger Lakes and so has the Wine Trail Association’s Chocolate and Wine Extravaganza. Norrie Ellington is on the planning committee and the Two Witches Winery is hosting one of the chocolatiers for some chocolate demos and wine pairings before the big competition which will bring in tons of people.  She is also dealing with a moved-up deadline for her latest screenplay. So to say the woman has her hands full is an understatement. The last thing she needs is another murder. But that is just what she gets and it is pivotal she puts on her sleuthing hat because the deceased was last seen with a glass of  Cabernet Sauvignon from her winery!

J.C. Eaton has bottled a wonderful mystery within these pages. Norrie teams up again with Theo and Don to try to make sense of what is happening at the participating wineries and the international chocolatiers. The event starts with dinner at Geneva on the Lake and all the wineries have provided wines for the event. The meet and greet went well but no one was truly surprised when the chocolatier ends up dead. There are plenty of rumors flying and secrets being held. Norrie has plenty of theories, some pretty far-fetched. Don and Theo do their best to try to reel her in but with threats found carved into the chocolate blocks and other crazy happenings everyone is interested in catching the killer as quickly as possible. While Norrie’s adventures aren’t always rooted in reality, she is so much fun to follow. The ending was unexpected and I loved it!!

All the characters continue to evolve. Norrie has made herself at home and she is getting a little more involved in the winery. Her sister and brother-in-law have hired a crew of knowledgeable people so she is able to keep up with her screenwriting commitments. The employees are an eclectic group but they know their jobs and have no problem with Norrie’s hit and run management style. There is the start of a romantic triangle that I hope resolves soon although I don’t know for sure which man I want Norrie to pick 😉

I love the setting of this series. The author has described Two Witches Winery so well, it is easy to picture everything from the wine tasting room, the goat outside, the family home, the dog mostly inside, and the roads to all the wineries in the area. I could also imagine the cold and snow. The chocolate demos had me drooling, I almost broke out the Christmas candy (meant for others) here.

Sauvigone for Good is funny and entertaining. So well-written I was in the dark about a lot of things right up to the final reveal. I am looking forward to my next visit!

Amateur sleuth Samantha Washington’s shopping trip to Chicago takes a deadly detour when a man is murdered on her bus . . .

After some post-Christmas retail therapy in the Windy City, mystery bookshop owner and historical whodunit novelist Sam Washington is returning home to North Harbor, Michigan, on a chartered bus. With Nana Jo and her gal pals Irma, Dorothy, and Ruby Mae from Shady Acres Retirement Village along for the ride, it’s a lively trip. But one passenger is not so lively—a gentleman Irma befriended is found dead in his seat after an unscheduled stop. The ladies immediately shift gears to find out who punched his ticket, while Sam slips into the driver’s seat to make sure Nana Jo and her crew steer clear of fatal conclusions . . .

Dollycas’s Thoughts

I just can’t get enough of this series!

This time Sam takes a trip to Chicago with Nana Jo and her friends from Shady Acres for a little post-holiday fun on a chartered bus trip. They all had a good time and as usual, Irma found herself a man. He is so taken with her he joins her on the bus home to North Harbor. When the bus makes an unscheduled courtesy stop it seems her new friend is not snoozing in his seat. No, the man is dead. Before the police can arrive, Nana Jo, Irma, Dorothy, and Ruby Mae decide Sam will lead them in their own investigation in the death. She tries to put the brakes on their ideas but soon realizes she has give in before they swerve off on their own and one of them ends up dead.

Ms. Burns has created quite a crew of entertaining characters. Sam, her lovable poodles, her nephews who man the bookshop while she in off following clues, and all the residents of Shady Acres including Nana Jo come together in a story that is hard to put down. Irma gets a bigger role this time and I liked that. All the ladies bring a huge dose of humor to all the situations they face. As always, Snickers and Oreo put a big smile on my face.

The main mystery is clever. A closed room, I mean bus mystery, limits the suspects but that doesn’t make this whodunit an easy solve, especially because there were people on the bus’s return trip that did not make the trip with the group to Chicago. The death actually happened out of North Harbor’s jurisdiction which adds some unique situations. They aren’t able to get answers from the detective in charge of the case like they do with the local detective. The victim’s true identity also twists things up a bit.

Our amateur sleuth is also an aspiring author so readers are treated to a second mystery story that she is writing. A historical mystery featuring Lady Elizabeth and her niece, Lady Penelope. They witnessed a woman fall to her death and have reason to believe she was pushed.  Sam uses her writing to help clarify the clues for the murder she is trying to solve in real life. Both mysteries are filled with twists and fun to try and solve before their big reveals. Sam even asks the detective if she can do a big reveal like Hercule Poirot and what follows was positively delightful for this cozy mystery lover.

Bookmarked for Murder mixes marvelously fun mysteries with realistic characters and a couple of lovable pups to bring us a book filled with humor and the perfect amount of romance. The entire Mystery Bookshop Series is not to be missed by cozy lovers!

Lark Davis, horse trainer and reluctant amateur sleuth, is sure that her crime-solving days are behind her. At least that’s what she told her grandmother. However, when her Homeowners Association President and owner of the local hardware store is found dead the day after she had a public fight with him, Lark is back in the last place she wants to be — the middle of a murder case.

But this is Barrow Bay, and things are never as they seem. Gerald Pratchett had a list of enemies a mile long, and each one had a very real reason for wanting to see him gone. Welcome to Torte-a small-town family bakeshop where the coffee is hot, the muffins are fresh, and the cakes are definitely to die for…

It’s autumn in Ashland, Oregon-’tis the season for a spiced hot apple cider with a serving (or two) of Torte’s famous peach cobbler. It’s also the perfect time for Jules Capshaw to promote her family’s beloved bake shop by competing in The Pastry Channel’s reality show, Take the Cake. The prize is $25,000. But as Jules quickly learns, some people would kill for that kind of dough. Literally.

Then, just as Jules dusts off her Bavarian Chocolate Cake recipe and cinches up her apron, the corpse of a fellow contestant is discovered-death by buttercream. What began as a fun, tasteful televised adventure has morphed into something of a true-crime detective show for Jules and everybody else on set. Who could have killed Chef Marco, and why? Can Jules sift out the killer before someone else gets burned?

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Can Jules Capshaw Take the Cake? The Pastry Channel’s show has come to Ashland, Oregon and she is representing the family’s bakeshop, Torte, as a contestant against four other pastry chefs. Her family sure could use the $25000 prize to continue their improvements to their business.

Jules has baked a Bavarian Chocolate Cake for the day’s challenge but when she arrives on the set she finds one of the competing chefs dead. The powers that be commit to continuing the show as soon as the police release the set, but Jules wants to know – Who killed the chef? Are the rest of the chefs in danger? and most importantly – Is one of the chefs the killer? She starts doing a little snooping on her own to find answers before another chef gets frosted.

___

Ms. Alexander’s characters are so likable. Jules, her mom, their employees, Thomas, the Professor, and more all make me wish I could visit Torte and meet them all. All are genuine and believable. They are joined this time by a group of pastry chefs that are diverse in their specialties along with the small crew from The Pastry Channel who each have something to prove. All these new visitors are viable suspects and seem to have secrets. I liked that some of the chefs ended using Torte’s kitchen to create their show entries. It allowed both Jules and us readers to get to know them better. It also made clear how patient  Jules and mom, Helen could be with strangers in their kitchen. They also handled a little strife between two employees with time and patience.

Readers are treated to a little romance too, as relationships evolve through normal everyday life. Jules is still trying to sort things through will Carlos as the clock ticks down on their break.

I love watching shows like Take the Cake so I was thrilled with this theme. The author created a marvelous whodunit around that theme giving Jules plenty of opportunity to sift through the clues and follow them as need be. Several twists spin to keep everyone guessing. With Helen and Jules’ tight connection to the chief of police, aka, The Professor and Detective-In-Training, Thomas, they keep them informed in everything they find and don’t hesitate to call for help when needed. I like that.

I can’t forget to mention the food. Most of the luscious pastries and desserts. I say most because there are a couple that clearly were not baked by the chef that presented them. Daily life at the bakeshop also adds more delightful treats and morning breakfast ideas. The schedule and the workings of the shop are also interesting. The realistic fact it is a hard business on a tight budget is also appreciated and grounds the whole series in reality.

Awesome characters, a fantastic setting, and a wonderful mystery all make A Batter of Life and Death a delectable cozy mystery and A Perfect Escape. The sample taste of On Thin Icing included at the end of the story has whet my appetite to read more of this series soon.

Cozy Wednesday featuring Brewed Awakening (A Coffeehouse Mystery) by Cleo Coyle #Review / #Giveaway – Great Escapes Book Tour

Welcome to Cozy Wednesday!

The new Coffeehouse Mystery is out and I am thrilled to give you my thoughts!

Brewed Awakening (A Coffeehouse Mystery)
by Cleo Coyle

About Brewed Awakening

ISBN-13: 978-0451488879

From Cleo Coyle, the New York Times bestselling author of Shot in the Dark and Dead Cold Brew, comes a delicious new entry in the “fun and gripping” (The Huffington Post) Coffeehouse Mysteries.

When coffeehouse manager Clare Cosi awakens on a bench in Washington Square Park, she has no idea she’s been missing for the past week, or that her friends and family have been frantic with worry. Now that she’s back, everyone is overjoyed, including a handsome NYPD detective who claims to be her fiancé. But to Mike Quinn’s crushing distress, Clare doesn’t remember him, or much of anything about the last decade of her life.

Clare’s missing memory is tied to a crime she witnessed. An acquaintance of Clare’s elegant employer–and fellow member of an exclusive Gotham circle known as “The Ladies Who Brunch”–invited Clare to her posh hotel to sample gourmet wedding cakes. The pair took a stroll after their indulgent tasting and, according to security camera footage, a masked figure snatched the hotel heiress at gunpoint with Clare looking on. Did the kidnapper take Clare, too? The camera went dark, just like Clare’s memory. Soon authorities grow suspicious. Is Clare really a victim? Or merely acting like one? Evidence is mounting that she set the woman up.

To clear her name, Clare must find a way to reclaim her memories and rescue the heiress before this high-stakes crime ends in tragedy. Otherwise, instead of walking down the aisle, Clare may find herself perp-walking to prison as an accomplice to kidnapping and murder.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

This time Cleo Coyle turns things inside out when our protagonist becomes the victim. Clare Cosi has been missing for a week when she wakes up on a bench in Washington Square Park, disoriented and scared, she wanders the area finally finding the Village Blend coffeehouse. Her friends, family, and employees are all thrilled to have her back but realize she has no memory of several years. She thinks her daughter is still a youngster waiting for her to come home. That her divorce was recent and the anger at her ex, Matt, is still vivid. But worst of all she has no memory of Mike Quinn, the man who loves her so much. A man she was ready to marry.

Everyone believes her memory loss is due to a tragic event. She had been meeting with hotel heiress/owner, Annette Brewster, to taste wedding cakes. After the tasting, both women disappeared. While now Clare has been found, Annette is still missing. Evidence shows Clare may have been in on a kidnapping. Without her memory, she has no way to clear her name. She is willing to do anything to get her memory and her life back even working with her ex, who she really hates at the moment.

___

Never deny the power of coffee!

Cleo Coyle has brewed up a truly stellar story. Over the course of this series, fans have come to love these characters. Putting the star in peril really perks up all of our antennas. We are rooting for her more than we ever have.

What I loved is that she hasn’t lost her love of coffee and her talent of discerning every bit of its flavor profile. She also hasn’t lost her sleuthing ability and the need to find the truth.   Not sure who she can really trust she is tentative at first. But she knows she not only needs to recover her memory for herself but there is another woman out there that needs to be found.

The author has given readers a mystery that is impossible to put down. There is action and suspense with the requisite humor required by the genre. I was totally captivated by Clare’s memory loss and the treatment it received within these pages. There are plenty of twists and surprises as the clues started to fall into place, including an old case that is not what it seemed to be.

While the Village Blend is an excellent backdrop for a mystery I liked that this time the mystery and keeping Clare safe took us on quite a journey, New York, New Jersey, and for one character farther up the coast. We also get to visit a grand home. Oh my word, it sounded like quite a place.

I absolutely love this series and these characters. Each new book becomes my new favorite. This time Cleo Coyle has really topped herself. This story is derived from the research of true amnesia cases. It felt fresh and new and was explored in a caring way while twisting it into a fascinating mystery. All the cozy touches expected were there including all the coffee and food descriptions fans of the series have come to expect.

Well-plotted, well-written, with wonderful characters, Brewed Awakening is truly one of the best books I have read this year. I started it late on Thanksgiving Eve and was only able to read a few chapters. Thankfully 🙂 with Thanksgiving the next day and Mr. Dollycas in charge of the meal, I was able to get right back to it and finish it up before our dinner was served.

Keeping Secrets: (Glen Falls Mystery) by Zanna Mackenzie #Review / #Giveaway

Keeping Secrets: (Glen Falls Mystery)
Romantic Mystery (Paranormal)
1st in Series
Setting – Scotland
Independently Published (January 30, 2017)
Number of Pages – 220 Pages
Kindle ASIN: B01MSDB4V7

Running from her past lands Kat in a whole lot of trouble in the present!

Fleeing from her past and determined to make a fresh start, Kat heads for the picturesque town of Glen Falls. Opting to ignore the tourist hype about spooky goings-on (it’s all make believe anyway, right?), Kat gets a job in a shop selling magical candles, charms and crystals. Discovering her new boss is a real witch who actually casts spells to ward off evil, Kat starts to wonder whether running from her old life has landed her in even more trouble in the present…

With a fiery feud threatening to destroy the town, things soon get ugly and Kat wades into sleuthing mode, attempting to battle love spells, magic wrongdoings, sabotage and a whole lot more before things can spiral dangerously out of control.

Nursing a broken heart and with more than enough crazy stuff already on her plate, risking a new romantic involvement is the last thing she needs right now, but then she meets the gorgeous and mysterious Alex, a man who seems to be keeping even more secrets about his current life than Kat is about her past. She’s not stupid, she knows she should keep as far away from him as possible. Unfortunately, with circumstances beyond her control, that’s proving rather difficult to do…

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Kat finds herself in Glen Falls trying to start over. She has two jobs, one selling crystal and charms for a real witch, and the other, delivering sandwiches for a local deli. Summer, the witch she works for is part of a Save the World group protesting against companies wanting to develop more land in the area. Kat’s two jobs seem to collide when the deli gets a new customer, a developer building houses at the edge of town. The development has been vandalized and Kat is afraid Summer’s group is responsible. Kay is further twisted into the mystery as she starts to have feelings for Alex, the manager at the construction site. Another twist is added when the ex she left behind arrives in Glen Falls to win her back. Secrets and spells are making it hard for Kat to make a fresh start but she hopes to put all the clues together so she can have the life she deserves.

___

I really enjoyed meeting the residents of Glen Falls, which has its fair share of witches. Zanna Mackenzie is an author from the U.K. so some terms may take a little getting used to, but the writing is so rich I could almost hear the Scottish accents. Kat had quite a journey through this story. She interacts with so many people and seems to become quick friends with almost everyone she meets. The characters were very well developed for the first book in a series.

I felt the story had a nice flow. The romance was the main part of the story with magic and mystery entwined. I did enjoy that the author brought in concern for the world and the environment. I wish that would have had more depth. The mystery was interesting and wrapped up nicely. The author added the perfect amount of humor too.

This series is off to a nice start. Keeping Secrets is a lighthearted paranormal romantic mystery with characters I would like to get to know better. I am looking forward to another visit to Glen Falls.

About the Author

I live in the UK (Derbyshire/ Leicestershire border) with my husband, 5 dogs, a vegetable patch that’s home to far too many weeds and an ever-expanding library of books waiting to be read

Being a freelance writer and editor of business publications is my ‘day job’ but, at every opportunity, I can be found scribbling down notes on scenes for whatever novel I’m working on. I love it when the characters in my novels take on minds of their own and start deviating from the original plot.

I enjoy walking the dogs, gardening, and reading.

Cozy Wednesdays featuring Potions Are for Pushovers (An Eleanor Wilde Mystery) by Tamara Berry @KensingtonBooks

Welcome to Cozy Wednesday!

I am excited to feature Potions are for Pushovers today!

Potions Are for Pushovers (An Eleanor Wilde Mystery)
Paranormal Cozy Mystery
2nd in Series
Setting – England
Publisher: Kensington (November 26, 2019)
Hardcover: 288 pages
ISBN-10: 1496719638
ISBN-13: 978-1496719638
Kindle ASIN: B07PCHV2KP

It may have been a ghost that led Eleanor Wilde to set up shop in a quaint English village. But now that she’s established herself as the town witch, Ellie’s contentedly casting spells on anyone desperate enough—or gullible enough—to request her mysterious potions…

Selling mystical elixirs and tantalizing tonics is a pretty good way for a fake medium to earn a living. Or at least it’s Ellie’s main source of income—until a villager turns up dead. The cause? Murder by poisoning. And though Ellie’s concoctions don’t include anything worthy of a skull and crossbones, suddenly she’s the prime suspect. Her only recourse is to find the culprit who did do away with Sarah Blackthorne. No one liked the mean old battle-axe. But did anyone hate her enough to kill her?

It’s enough of a mystery to make Ellie hang up her witch’s hat and take millionaire beau Nicholas Hartford up on his offer to keep her afloat. Except Ellie is not the kind of woman to lean on a man—least of all a man she adores but whose place in her life is uncertain. Besides, Ellie’s taken on two young witches-in-training—apprentices if you will—and both of them are convinced a werewolf is the murderer.

Just as Ellie’s wondering if there really is something otherworldly going on, animals suddenly begin to disappear—including her beloved cat, Beast. Now Ellie’s on the warpath to uncover the wicked truth about the people and the place she’s only just begun to call home…

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Werewolves aren’t my thing at all, in fact I have turned down books for review as soon as I saw them mentioned in the synopsis or stopped reading books where they have appeared unannounced but after reading the first book in this series Seances Are For Suckers and loving it I trusted author Tamara Berry to keep things cozy and intriguing without ruffling my feathers. I can report that while I did learn some werewolf lore I was right.

Eleanor Wilde has set up her business in a mistress cottage on the Hartford family estate and become quite close with Nicholas Hartford III after using her “powers” to clear “ghosts” out of the Hartford castle. He knows she is a fake and is fine with that. She has clients who believe in her and buy her potions and elixirs, but when Sarah Blackthorne is poisoned she loses what clientele she did have and also becomes the number one suspect.

New in town she didn’t know that basically everyone hated the woman that was killed which eases her mind as far as the authorities but overwhelms her as her suspect list includes almost everyone she knows. She also finds herself with two young apprentices who due to another death and some missing animals including Ellie’s cat, Beast, believe a werewolf is responsible for the deaths. Ellie even starts to buy into their theory.

____

I really like Ellie and the way she finds her way in this community of characters as the story continues. She has her issues like a leaky roof and the responsibility for her apprentices all while she tries to investigate a murder. I really appreciated that Ellie’s sister Winnie is still a very important part of her life. I also enjoyed the way her relationship with Nichols is progressing. We have learned quite a bit about our protagonist but Nicholas is still mostly a mystery himself.

The plot of this mystery is complex and filled with twists and turns and a very hairy individual. The death of a neighbor’s animal was a little gory but was critical to the progression of the story. I enjoyed that the young girls played key roles in solving part of the mystery and that she got a little help from an unusual source.  I was caught off guard when the actual killer was revealed. A person completely off my radar. I should have realized after reading the first book to expect the unexpected. Ms. Berry has proven to be excellent at keeping this reader captivated by the story and totally surprising me at the end.

Potions Are for Pushovers is a great addition to what I hope is a long-running series. It is very well-written and the cast of characters continues to grow and evolve. The drama is balanced by humor in all the right places and the romance is still a minor point at this point. I am really excited to see what the author has in store next. Please, no vampires 🙂

This story can be read on its own but recommend reading both books in order for maximum enjoyment.
