Welcome to Cozy Wednesday!

I am thrilled to welcome Daryl Wood Gerber back to Escape With Dollycas today
as part of her Great Escapes Virtual Book Tour!

In Sifting Through Clues, at the Cookbook Nook, Jenna is featuring all sorts of cookbooks that serve up a great tea. Do you love high tea? I do. I love the pomp and circumstance. The tea, the champagne, the scones with whipped cream. Yum.

At the Nook Café, Katie is whipping up all sorts of great recipes to feature at a tea. In fact, she gives a tea sandwich demonstration at the Cookbook Nook. One of the sandwiches she makes as a sample for the guests to enjoy is a pear and cheese tea sandwich. This is one of my favorites. Many tea sandwiches are savory, but this one is sweet–not too sweet because of the goat cheese. Now, if you’re not a goat cheese fan, switch it out to Brie or cheddar or even cream cheese.  The honey and pears are what makes this sandwich stand out.

Pear and Cheese Tea Sandwich

(Makes 8 sandwiches or 16 – 32 triangles)

4 ounces of goat cheese, softened to room temperature

2 red Barlett pears, sliced thin

½ cup watercress

¼ cup pecans, chopped, *or nut of your choice

4 tablespoons honey

16 slices of white bread

In a small bowl, mix the cheese and pears. Add the watercress, pecans (*or nut of your choice) and honey. Spread on 8 slices of bread. Top the sandwiches with the remaining slices of bread. Carefully remove crusts, and then cut the sandwiches into desired shapes.

Sounds fantastic and easy.

Thank you, Daryl, for visiting today!

Keep reading for my thoughts on Daryl’s book.

The Agatha Award–winning author of Wreath Between the Lines returns to the Cookbook Nook, where culinary mysteries are giving everyone food for thought . . .

Book clubs from all over have descended on Crystal Cove to celebrate the library’s Book Club Bonanza week, and Jenna Hart has packed the Cookbook Nook with juicy reads and tasty cookbooks. But she’s most excited about spending an evening with the Mystery Mavens and their moveable feast, when they will go from house to house to share different culinary treats and discuss the whodunit they’re all reading. It’s all good food and fun for the savvy armchair detectives, until one of the members of the group is found murdered at the last stop on the tour.

As if that weren’t enough to spoil her appetite, Jenna discovers that all the evidence points to her friend Pepper as being the guilty party. And with Pepper’s chief-of-police daughter too close to the case to be impartial, Jenna knows she’ll have to step in to help clear her friend’s name before a bitter injustice sends her to jail. Sifting through the clues, Jenna unearths any number of possible culprits, but she’ll have to cook up a new way to catch the killer before Pepper’s goose is cooked . . .

Includes tasty sweet and savory recipes!

Dollycas’s Thoughts

We return to Crystal Cove, California just in time for Book Club Bonanza Week sponsored by the library. It is an event that has brought in many tourists and the Cookbook Nook has stocked up and planned a few events. Jenna’s book club, the Mystery Mavens is hosting a progressive dinner while discussing this month’s book, each course being hosted at a different member’s house. The final host seems to have received her “just desserts”. She is found dead as her guests arrive.

The deceased, Ivy Beale owned Dreamcatcher, a crystal shop, focused on their healing properties. All the evidence seems to point at the owner of Beaders of Paradise, Pepper Pritchett, Jenna’s friend and mother of Chief of Police, Cinnamon. Everyone knows Chief Cinnamon is too close to the case but she refuses to step aside, even when an unexpected visitor enters her life. Jenna finds herself Sifting Through Clues to get to the truth to make sure the real killer is booked!

The author brings readers another terrific mystery! This time her focus is on book clubs is a real treat. Because of that, we are introduced to several new characters. We also meet someone from Cinnamon’s past which adds another interesting dimension to the story. These characters all mesh with our returning favorites to create a story I had a hard time putting down.

All the core characters have evolved in this series. Jenna’s friend Bailey is getting so excited for her little bundle to be born and I loved the decor she has planned for the nursery. Bailey always makes me smile. After Jenna, she has become my favorite. The fact that Pepper and Jenna are now friends shows so much growth. They have come a long way. Jenna’s relationship with Cinnamon though is pretty rocky. I know she doesn’t want Jenna involved in her investigation but I would think this time she would be happy for Jenna’s help.

The mystery portions of the story were so intriguing, I mean the chief of police’s mother as the prime suspect!  Twists, turns, red herrings, this story had them all. So well written and well plotted out. A truly exciting email element added to the drama. I urge to plan accordingly because had I been able to keep my eyes open I would have finished the book all in one sitting.

As with all the books in this series, the recipes had my mouth watering and all the references to cozy mysteries and cookbooks are always appreciated.

The Agatha Award–winning author of Pressing the Issue returns to the Cookbook Nook, where Jenna Hart is busy decking the halls and ducking a killer . . .

The holidays are Jenna Hart’s favorite time of year, but just as she’s decorating the Cookbook Nook for all the festive events, her imperious older sister makes a surprise visit, anxious that her husband’s been more naughty than nice. To make matters worse, her father’s good friend Jake shows up on her doorstep with a frantic report that his friend has been murdered—trussed with Christmas lights and impaled with a tree star.

Worried that Jake was the intended victim, Jenna makes a list of suspects and checks it twice. Swapping her Santa’s hat for a sleuthing cap, she gets busy investigating Jake’s long-lost sister, his Grinch of a neighbor, and a stamp collector who covets Jake’s most treasured piece. When Jake himself is poisoned and nearly dies, Jenna knows she’ll have to do whatever it takes to corner the culprit before it’s lights out for Jake . . .

Includes tantalizing holiday recipes!

Dollycas’s Thoughts

It’s almost Christmas in Crystal Cove and Jenna is excited about all the upcoming festivities until her father’s friend Jake arrives at her door with tragic news. He arrived home to find his friend Geoffrey tangled up in Christmas lights and stabbed with a tree star. He asks for Jenna’s help with the police, he is certain that his crotchety neighbor is the killer but Jenna is not so sure that is the case. She thinks the killer made a mistake and that Jake was the intended victim. When Jake is poisoned at a holiday event she knows she is right. Luckily he survives but before the killer has another chance she is determined to catch them as fast as she can so everyone in Crystal Cove can enjoy the Ho-Ho-Holidays.

Again the well-developed characters shine within this story. The drama between Jenna’s sister Whitney and her husband is having a big effect on their daughter and Jenna tries her best to lend her support and smooth ruffled feathers but her main focus is solving the murder. The supporting cast plays a huge part in enabling her to do both. The dialogue is crisp and relationships stand out. We are getting to the point where a cast of characters list at the beginning of the book may be necessary as the cast grows, especially for new readers to keep everyone straight.

The author serves up a wide variety of suspects. As Jenna investigates we get to know several in depth. The clues are spread out for us to see but as the title says it is “between the lines” where things start to become clear. I enjoyed how officer Cinnamon tried to keep Jenna out of the investigation but even while on vacation her father was able to convince Cimmamon that just wasn’t going to happen.

The merchants of Crystal Cove are all decked out for the holidays. A wreath contest finds a unique wreath on every door. The events, the lights, all the decorations put this reader in a very merry holiday mood.

One of the things I really like about this series is the book title name dropping, sometimes with great descriptions of the books. Real cookbooks with great recipes and colorful photos. Cozies fitting the theme of the story, this time Christmas. It is a good idea to have a place to jot down these titles so you can check them out later and add them to your wish list. There are also recipes in the book to tempt you, so again a place to write them down is helpful.

A wonderful holiday read! Make yourself comfortable, with a cup of hot chocolate or cider, sit back, put on your sleuthing cap, and enjoy this fun holiday trip to Crystal Cove.

The buoyant mood at Bistro Rousseau deflates when Chef Camille’s sister, Renee, turns up dead in the chef’s kitchen, and Mimi Rousseau must tease the real killer out of a mélange of menacing characters.

Crush Week in Nouvelle Vie is a madhouse—in a good way. Tourists pour into town for the pressing of the Napa Valley’s world-renowned grapes and all the town’s businesses get a nice lift, including Bistro and Maison Rousseau. Mimi is raising the ante this year with a Sweet Treats Festival, a wonderland of croissants, cakes, tarts, and soufflés crafted with expert care by the area’s top talents.

Chef Camille’s sister Renee is managing the festival with a cast-iron fist, upsetting everyone, including her sister. Which is bad for Camille when Renee turns up dead in the chef’s kitchen. Mimi is still building her business, so her first course of action is to whip up answers and catch the unsavory perpetrator before Camille takes a dusting and gets burned.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

What a SWEET cozy! Daryl Wood Gerber has served up her readers a delectable mystery with fine characters and full-bodied story.

We arrive just in time for Crush Week and the brand new Sweet Treats Festival. Chef C’s sister, Renee is in charge of the festival and the chef is at Bistro Rousseau preparing meals and menus for all the tourists coming into town.  Mimi is running between her bistro and her inn, where the festival is taking place trying her best to help out everywhere. That is until her chef arrives home to find Renee dead on her kitchen floor. Mimi can’t believe the police are actually looking at her chef as the prime suspect.

Chef Camille is taking some time off to mourn the loss of her sister and deal with the police, so Mimi steps in to manage the kitchen all the while trying to find the real killer. She realizes she is getting close to the truth when she seems to be the target of some unusual “accidents”. She needs to wrap things up quickly before something more than the grapes get crushed.

In this second book of the series, the author again sets a brisk pace. Readers are drawn into the story through two big events taking place. These events introduce us to some new characters like Chef Camille’s sister Renee and her husband Rusty. Renee tired quickly of Rusty’s new chicken farmer lifestyle and has purchased an event business. She has thrown herself into making the first event, the Sweet Treats Festival a huge success. The former business owner, Allie O’Malley, confronts Renee about their agreement and it doesn’t go well. Mimi considers them both suspects but she finds they are not the only ones that would have the motivation to bash the woman over the head.

I was very entertained following Mimi’s footsteps as she did her best to capture the killer. Especially because her footsteps went through the kitchen of the bistro and the grounds of the Sweet Treats Festival. We were treated to descriptions of the most scrumptious savory and sweet foods, my mouth was watering. I really appreciate the author for including several recipes at the end of the book.

This author is an amazing storyteller. She sets the scene, nurtures her characters and gives them dynamic dialogue, all while wrapping them in a masterful mystery. I have enjoyed every book she has written. I believe this new French Bistro Mystery is my new favorite. Like a perfect soufflé would impress your guests this story reached great heights to impress me and make it both a great and perfect escape.

It’s always been Mimi Rousseau’s dream to open her own bistro, but it seems beyond her grasp since she’s been chased back home to Nouvelle Vie in Napa Valley by her late husband’s tremendous debt. Until her best friend Jorianne James introduces her to entrepreneur Bryan Baker who invests in promising prospects. Now, working the bistro and inn until she’s able to pay it off and call it her own, Mimi is throwing the inn’s first wedding ever.

The wedding will be the talk of the town, as famous talk show host Angelica Edmonton, daughter of Bryan’s half-brother, Edison, has chosen the inn as her perfect venue. Anxious, Mimi is sure things are going to turn south, especially when Edison gets drunk and rowdy at the out-of-towners’ dinner, but by the evening, things begin to look up again. That is until six AM rolls around, and Bryan is found dead at the bistro with an éclair stuffed in his mouth. And the fingers point at Mimi, whose entire loan is forgiven in Bryan’s will.

Now it’s up to Mimi to clear her name and get to the bottom of things before the killer turns up the heat again in A Deadly Éclair, the scrumptious series debut by Agatha Award-winning author Daryl Wood Gerber.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

This series is off to a magnificent (magnifique) start! Mimi Rousseau is living her dream of owning her own inn and bistro. She has collaborated with Bryan Baker for the financial backing needed for the purchase and the vast remodeling effort to get both places open. In fact, the story opens with Mimi and her staff getting reading to host its first wedding. Bryan’s niece, talk show host, Angelica Edmonton and her fiancé are excited to be married at the inn. Things start to go awry with Angelica’s father, Edison, arrives at the out-of-towners’ dinner, but when Bryan is found dead the next morning at the bistro with an éclair in his month, Mimi doesn’t think things can get any worse. Now her mentor is dead and she is the prime suspect.

I have been looking forward to the book since I first saw the cover pop up on Facebook and it certainly exceeded my expectations. As a fan of the author’s Cheese Shop Mysteries and Cookbook Nook Mysteries, I knew the characters would be strong and the food descriptions would have my mouth watering and I was right.

Mimi Rousseau has a lot on her plate but I knew right away she could handle it. She is strong and savvy and has hired a top-notch staff. Chef C. and sous chef Stefan keep the kitchen under control while Heather runs the dining room. The inn, a fancy bed, and breakfast is managed by Mimi’s BFF, Jorianne. Mimi oversees everything from the menus and wine to all the events happening at the inn and bistro. All of the characters are very well defined for the first book in a series but there is plenty of room for them to grow. The secondary cast, the wedding party, family, and friends, are also very well crafted. I was drawn right into all of their drama.

The story was very fast paced with some corkscrew twists and more suspects than I at first set my sites on.  This author knows how to set the scene and have readers nibbling on each little clue as we follow Mimi in her investigation. The mystery is well plotted and so entertaining. I was enthralled from the first page until the last and then I wanted more.

Now let me talk about the food. Oh, my! Thanks to the tantalizing descriptions I could almost taste and smell so many delightful dishes and even the unique flavors of the wine served.  I love onion soup so every time it was mentioned my cravings stepped up another notch. Daryl Wood Gerber does share some recipes in the back of the book including recipes for Chocolate Éclairs and Onion Soup Gratinée. Both have been copied into my recipes file.

I am really excited about this new series and can’t wait for book #2, A Soufflé of Suspicion, coming in July 2018.

Welcome to Cozy Wednesday!

Please help me welcome Daryl Wood Gerber back to Escape With Dollycas!

Hi Everyone,

I’m often asked if I do research for my books.

Yes!!! Sometimes I do it by reading books. Sometimes I go online to travel the world for ideas. Sometimes I review photographs on Pinterest and similar sites for visual ideas. And sometimes I go in person to a store, a town, or an event.

For Pressing the Issue, I attended the Renaissance Fair in Los Angeles. I’ve been to many over the years, but I decided to attend a current one to see if they’d changed much. They hadn’t. The vendors were all delightful. I particularly loved the candle display and the knives display. The costumes were fabulous. I dressed up, but I wished I’d purchased a wench costume for next time. They were so colorful and there was such an array. I took in the birds of prey show and watched the merry dancers.

And then I ventured to the food court. Yum. The aromas from all the delicious goodies were heavenly. Turkey legs, meat on a stick, pasties, mead!

One of the foods I’d never seen at a fair before was Hawker’s Mush. Hawker, of course, means vendor or seller. As for the word mush? Don’t let the name fool you. This is NOT porridge. It’s like a very large potato pancake but made with spinach and onions and wild rice, and then drizzled with hollandaise sauce. Divine.

Enjoy.

Hawker’s Mush

4 tablespoons or more, butter

1 large onion, chopped (about 1 ½ cups)

4 cups raw spinach, shredded (becomes about 2 cups)

1 tablespoon fresh thyme, chopped or 1 teaspoon dried thyme

2 cloves garlic, crushed

2 tablespoons sherry

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper

2 cups cooked brown rice and wild rice mix

3 eggs, beaten

Hollandaise sauce *recipe below

In a medium frying pan, melt butter over medium heat. Sauté onions until soft and beginning to turn golden brown, about 8 -10 minutes. If the onions seem dry, add another tablespoon of butter. Then add raw spinach.

Sauté until all the moisture from the spinach is absorbed, about 2 minutes. Turn heat down and add the thyme, crushed garlic, and sherry. Add salt and pepper. Simmer until all liquid is absorbed, about 2-4 minutes more. Cool 5 minutes.

In a large bowl mix the wild rice, the onion-spinach mixture, and the beaten eggs.

This step you’ll have to do in batches: in a medium frying pan, melt 1 tablespoon butter. Add rice-onion-spinach in 1/2 cup portions. Flatten each down so you have rounds about ½ ” in thickness. Cook over medium heat until set. Flip over and cook until golden.

Slide onto a plate and put in a warm oven. Repeat until all are cooked.

When ready, serve with hollandaise sauce.

Hollandaise sauce

3 egg yolks

1/4 teaspoon Dijon mustard

1 tablespoon lemon juice

1/4 teaspoon white pepper

1/2 cup butter (one stick)

In the blender, combine the egg yolks, mustard, lemon juice, and white pepper. Blend for about 5-10 seconds.

Put the butter into a microwave-safe bowl or measuring cup and melt completely about 30-45 seconds.

Set the blender on high speed and add the melted butter to the egg mixture in a thin stream. It will thicken up, fast.

NEAT TRICK:  You can keep the sauce warm until serving by placing the blender itself in a pan of hot water.

As the annual Renaissance Fair comes to Crystal Cove, Jenna Hart’s Cookbook Nook is packed with tasty treats and all things medieval, while her pal Bailey is ready to swoon over her upcoming nuptials at a local vineyard. But when the two friends discover the body of the vineyard’s owner bludgeoned by a winepress, all their merriment fades, along with their hopes for a vintage year.

Which churlish varlet did the deed? Was it the victim’s errant brother, who stood to inherit the vineyards? Or the owner’s crestfallen ex-girlfriend? Mayhap it was the newly arrived comely wench or her jealous husband. Fie on them all! Verily, Jenna can’t rest until justice is served, and she vows to track down the killer. But can she sniff out the truth before the villainous culprit strikes again?

Includes tantalizing recipes!

Dollycas’s Thoughts

We arrive in Crystal Cove just in time for the Renaissance Fair and Bailey’s wedding. Everyone was having a great time until the Nick, the king of the faire and owner of the venue for Bailey’s wedding is found dead. With a booth at the fair, the Cookbook Nook, and all the wedding plans the last thing Jenna Hart needs in a murder to solve. Nick was a very popular resident of Crystal Cove, who would want him dead? Jenna starts talking to everyone she can, maybe she can find the killer before all the people in town for the faire clear out and maybe Bailey’s dream wedding can take place as planned. Let the sleuthing begin.

The last book in this series had me struggling with many emotions. I was so glad to pick up this book and reconnect with all the characters and their lives at a happy time with the wedding and Ren Faire. The author does an excellent job of getting us up to date and back into the groove with Jenna and her friends and family. We also meet some new characters in town for the faire. Daryl Wood Gerber creates such delightful characters that have grown in each new installment of this series.

I was very taken with the vineyard setting Bailey and Tito had chosen for their nuptials. It was described so nicely and sounded like a beautiful place. I have never been to a Ren Faire but I had in my mind a set-up similar to the setting in Joyce and Jim Lavene’s Renaissance Faire Mysteries, but this being only a pop-up type event it wasn’t as elaborate as the faire in those stories, but it sure appeared to be a lot of fun.

The mystery is so well-written, plenty of suspects and plenty of twists. I do have a problem when I read books by this author. I tend to get all wrapped up in happening to the regular characters and the great books Jenna has a the CookBook Nook that I usually miss some very important clue. This time I made myself pay attention, even highlighting lines from the book on my Kindle. This time when we reached the reveal of the killer I was so happy to see my diligence paid off and I was right.

Another great story from Daryl Wood Gerber.

This series is best read in order for maximum enjoyment.

Now it’s up to Mimi to clear her name and get to the bottom of things before the killer turns up the heat again in A Deadly Éclair.

Now her mentor is dead and she is a prime suspect.

After reading about all that deliciousness in the book I am so happy Daryl is sharing recipes as part of her Great Escapes Tour. Be sure to visit each day to enjoy the full feast.

Traveling Meal

Appetizer #2

Welcome back to the traveling feast.  I’m celebrating the upcoming release of the first French Bistro Mystery, A DEADLY ÉCLAIR, by hostessing a traveling meal, one blog at a time. This way you can sample different foods…one day at a time.

Of course, I’m focusing on French-themed foods because my protagonist, Mimi Rousseau, would serve these kinds of items either at her bistro or at her home.  Mimi used to be a chef in San Francisco, but life took a turn, and she returned home to Nouvelle Vie, an enclave of Napa Valley, to start anew. Luckily, her benefactor gave her the opportunity to open her own bistro and bed-and-breakfast. Appetizers are an important feature in the bistro.

One can never have enough appetizers, right?

And champagne. It goes with everything. Ooh-la-la!  Enjoy.

Here’s a brief scene from A DEADLY ÉCLAIR:

*

As I bent to retrieve a basket, a woman screamed, “Mimi!”

My pulse skyrocketed. I spun around.

My best friend, Jo, the woman who had bravely tasted all my childhood cooking fiascoes, the woman who had introduced me to Bryan and who had given up her high-paying CPA job to manage Maison Rousseau, ran at me full tilt, arms waving. “Help! It’s horrible!”

*

Camembert Pear Appetizer

  • 1 8 oz. round of Camembert
  • 1 Tablespoon butter
  • 1 Bosc pear, peeled and cut into tiny cubes
  • 1 Tablespoon rosemary (fresh, if you can, chopped)
  • 2 Tablespoons Triple Sec (or other orange liqueur)
  • 2 Tablespoons balsamic vinegar
  • 1 Tablespoon honey

Remove the Camembert from the refrigerator and slice in half. Set aside.

Peel the Bosc pear. (It does not have to be completely ripe; may be firm)

Heat the butter in a medium saucepan over low heat. Add the pear and cook about 3-4 minutes, until the pear is tender. Add the rosemary and Triple Sec. Cook another minute.

Remove the pears from the pan.

Set one half of the Camembert, bloomy rind side down, on a pretty serving dish. Pour almost all of the pears (except 2 Tablespoons) on the bottom half of the Camembert.  Top with the other half of Camembert (bloomy rind on top). Top with the remaining pears.

Return the saucepan to the stove. Add the balsamic vinegar and honey and cook about one to two minutes, letting the combination reduce. Pour over the cheese and pears. Serve immediately (if you can, but sometimes guests aren’t always on time). It’s lovely at room temperature, too.

I’m offering a book giveaway (winner’s choice of 1 from my published paperbacks) every day of this traveling feast. To enter today, tell me—cheese platter or chips and dip in the comments ?

A mother he thought he’d lost. A father he never knew. An enemy that wants them dead.

At the age of five, Chase Day became an orphan. For thirty-one years, after a rebellious youth, he did his best to turn his life around and build a normal life—first as a Naval officer and then as a history professor at a boutique Bay Area college. Now, all that changes when he finds his mother, whom he thought had perished in a fire, dying from a gunshot wound. In her last breath, she urges him to find and protect the father he never knew. Where has his father been? Why has he never made contact? Can Chase discover why his family is a target before an unknown enemy destroys him?

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Daryl Wood Gerber brings us her 2nd suspense filled story following Girl on the Run.

I was thrilled to receive an advance copy of this book.

Chase Day gets a terrifying phone call from a woman he had thought was dead. He knows that voice, his mother’s, without thinking twice he rushes to her aid. He finds her dying of a gunshot wound. In her last breath, she begs him to save his father. A man he has never met. Using his naval officer’s training and experience he tries to find his father and find out why his family is being hunted.

Wood takes us on a heart pumping adventure that will have you glued to your seat from the first page until the last. I read the entire book all in one sitting.

Chase Day is such an interesting character. His mother left him at the age of 5, he never knew his father. He is raised by his grandmother. He joined the Navy after graduation and now works as a college history professor. He has real trust issues. He has suffered from PTSD and works with a group helping those that are suffering. With some help from his friends and borrowing several of their vehicles he is trying to uncover the secrets that have put his family and those close to him in the sights of a killer.

We follow Day on a corkscrew of twists and turns as he makes contact with the people in his mother’s past. All of them seem to be hiding something. He even bumps into his old high school girlfriend and thinks she seems may be in on the plan to eliminate his family. Day doesn’t even know if he can trust the police. Is he being paranoid? Who can he really rely on?

This is a captivating story of physical and emotional pain, deception, and revelation. Day’s story is thrilling and heartbreaking.  It is a story that will stick with well beyond the final page. Daryl Wood Gerber has proven again to be a gifted storyteller and one to watch in this genre. An absolute must-read!

Grilling the Subject by Daryl Wood Gerber

Whenever I write, I get hungry. That’s because I write books about food like the Cookbook Nook Mysteries and the Cheese Shop Mysteries. Even when I was writing my stand-alone suspense, GIRL ON THE RUN, I got hungry, mainly because I never had Chessa eating. She ate carrots and a power bar. Honestly?

Right now, mid-summer, I love a barbecue, which is perfect, seeing as I’m pitching GRILLING THE SUBJECT, the next Cookbook Nook Mystery. I love to barbecue beef – steaks and burgers. I know, it’s not PC right now, but I do. I’ve been told that people with O+ blood can eat more meat and it doesn’t hurt them. I hope that’s true. Add cheese? Yee-hah, this is a good burger.

Enjoy.

blog_burgerCOWBOY BURGERS WITH CHEDDAR CHEESE

(Makes 6-8 burgers)

1 sweet yellow onion
¾ cup (6-8 ounces) shredded cheddar cheese (plus more to adorn burger)
4 tablespoons mixed herbs *
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon white pepper
2 pounds hamburger (15-20% lean)

Prepare barbecue to a medium-high heat.

Peel and chop onion into small bits.

Shred 6-8 ounces of cheddar cheese.

Mix together your favorite herbs. [Suggestion: 1 tablespoon dried basil, 1 tablespoon thyme, 1 tablespoon rosemary, 1 tablespoon dried parsley.] Add salt and pepper.

In medium bowl, mix hamburger, onion, cheese and spices. Mold the mixture into 6-8 thick patties. NEAT TRICK: Put a thumbprint dent in the middle of each patty so that the juices collect there when you grill them.

Cook the burgers approximately 4 minutes on each side. Flip again and cook 2 minutes for medium rare.

Adorn burgers with extra cheese. Serve with or without a bun.

Things heat up for bookstore owner Jenna Hart in the latest Cookbook Nook mystery from the Agatha Award-winning author of Fudging the Books.

As the Wild West Extravaganza rides into Crystal Cove, California, Cookbook Nook store owner Jenna Hart is ready to indulge her appetite for grilled and barbecued treats and maybe even try the Texas skip. But when the body of one of her father’s neighbors is found the next morning smoldering in a bonfire, the rodeo revelry is extinguished.

Sylvia Gump had acquired plenty of enemies with her practice of illegally encroaching on her neighbors’ properties—including Jenna’s dad, who was off fishing by himself and has no alibi for the murder. Now it’s up to Cary Hart’s dutiful daughter to clear his name before the real killer turns up the heat and rakes someone else over the coals…

INCLUDES RECIPES

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Welcome to Crystal Cove! Just in time for the Wild West Extravaganza! Jenna is excited about all the tourists arriving and the new people coming into the Cookbook Nook. But grilling isn’t only happening at the festival. Sylvia Gump has been found dead in a bonfire on property shared with her neighbors. Including Jenna’s dad! He was seen in the area and is the prime suspect. Jenna is burning around town trying to prove what everybody knows, that he is no killer! She intends to grill anyone that could have killed the woman. Lord knows she had plenty of enemies!

Another spectacular addition to this series!

Daryl Wood Gerber creates such wonderful characters. They are fun, engaging and so entertaining. I love the way the couples are evolving but this time a surprise visitor to Crystal Cove could throw a huge twist into one of the relationships. I don’t want to spoil anything but the author had my emotions running out of control from mad to sad, and everywhere in between. I even had to reach for a tissue. To me that is the test of a great story. It is more than following the clues and figuring out the guilty party. If the story really makes you feel something, it is a story that will hold you beyond the final page.  It is for this reason I recommend this series be read in order. You need to see how  everything began.

That being said the mystery part of this story is well written and plotted as well. So many suspects and so many people withholding bits and pieces of the truth. As the pages continued I thought “Are we ever going to pin the right person down?” Then there was the “aha moment” and I realized I had missed some key clues. This author is a master at doing that to me. I hone on something so interesting that I forget to keep track of the details.

One part of this book that I really enjoyed is the location and not just sunny California. Jenna’s father and his neighbors all own a small piece of property that connects their lots. It is a place to gather and enjoy each other’s company. Sadly Sylvia Gump didn’t realize what a treasure this was and abused it terribly. Others also didn’t appreciate it fully either. This is a fantastic idea and I wish more communities would have places like this. In the days when everyone want to put up fences and walls it is refreshing to have community places like this. Years ago I lived in a place where there was a park complete with playground equipment where the neighbors would congregate while their children played, even having cookouts and picnics. What a great way to build a true friendships both for the adults and the kids.

I loved everything about this story! The worst part is now waiting for the next book in the series. Write fast Daryl!! I can hardly wait!!

GRILLING THE SUBJECT is another fabulous installment of this great series. A fun, fast, intriguing read.
~Lisa K’s Book Reviews

So many suspects. It seems like when Jenny clears someone from her list, something else pops up and they’re back on it. Not an easy one to solve, which keeps Jenny hopping and those pages turning.
~ FUONLYKNEW

GRILLING THE SUBJECT is a book about the past, choices and changes made and the impact on today. It’s also a book about loyalty, perseverance, and pushing through.
~Cozy Up With Kathy

The characters are really what makes this book (and this series) stand out for me. Ms. Gerber has a talent for creating believable characters who are easy to like…and believable characters who are easy to dislike (so you don’t mind finding them at the wrong end of a murder).
~Brooke Blogs

Grilling the Subject is delicious read – perfect for an end of summer read (well, perfect any time for those who enjoy a good mystery.) I always enjoy visiting Crystal Cove and catching up with Jenna, Rhett, Bailey, Aunt Vera and the other residents.

When a fairytale fantasy night becomes a nightmare, Chessa Paxton must run for her life…but will the truth set her free?

Chessa Paxton, an event planner in Lake Tahoe, celebrates a successful night at the Happily Ever After Ball, but her dream quickly becomes a nightmare when she wakes up beside the body of her dead husband. Nauseous and confused, feeling as if she’s been drugged, she can’t explain to the sheriff why her princess costume is bloodied. With her father already a convicted murderer, she feels invisible shackles ratcheting onto her wrists and ankles. She runs! But she can’t escape vivid flashes of memory: a massacre in a meadow; men and women in fairy tale costumes; Snow White’s dead body shielding her from bullets.

Though Chessa is a former costumer and a master of disguise, she quickly learns that hiding while trying to prove herself innocent is the most difficult task imaginable. Especially when the sheriff wants to throw her in jail and the real killer wants to silence her forever.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

A fantastic debut into the suspense genre for Daryl Wood Gerber.

Chessa Paxton attends the Happily Ever After Ball with her husband. All her hard work and planning seem to be a great success. Then she wakes up in her home next her husband with blood all over and her husband dead. She realizes quickly she is the prime suspect and with father already a convicted murderer she knows she doesn’t have a chance. She knows she has to get out of there and she does. She runs! She has to prove she didn’t do it but all she can remember are little snippets of what she thinks happened. With a few disguises and a little help from her friends she tries to find the real killer. While the police are searching for her and not the real killer she finds out that it isn’t easy to hide. The police want to arrest her and the killer wants her dead.

I was spellbound from start to finish. The author grabbed my attention and wouldn’t let go. I couldn’t read and flip the pages fast enough. I was so impressed by Chessa courage to find the truth. She was always thinking and planning, staying at least 1 step ahead of the police. Was she remembering correctly? Why was she still alive? Just so she could be framed for the murder? She doesn’t give up. She is determined to find the truth or die trying.

I was so completely engaged by this character and engrossed in the story. Each twist drew me deeper and deeper in, real life around me ceased to exist. The author has written a story with depth and layers full of true mayhem. All the characters are spectacularly written and the situations are so real. I could easily see this book turned into a movie. I had a vivid picture of everyone and everything that happened.

You may know Daryl Wood Gerber, aka Avery Aames for her cozy mystery series’. Let me tell you there is nothing cozy about this story.  She has entered the Thriller/Suspense class with a BANG! Drama from page 1 and a story that will give you chills. RUN, don’t walk, to purchase this book, heck pre-order it as soon as you can.

FUDGING THE BOOKSWhile doing research for Fudging the Books, the 4th Cookbook Nook Mystery, I had to do a whole lot of chocolate tasting. Poor me. I tried different cocoas. I tried different high-end chocolate bars. I came up with a number of new recipes for the book, including of all things, cocoa croutons for salads and oranges dipped in chocolate.

Now, I can’t share any of the recipes from the book with you before its publication date, but if you didn’t know, I’ve had recipes in other books, and today’s is one of my all-time favorites.

From Stirring the Plot, the 3rd Cookbook Nook Mystery, which featured Halloween food, I also included French Silk Fudge Cake. It’s the cake served at the Winsome Witches luncheon. Jenna adored it and begged Chef Katie to recreate it. The coffee makes the difference!

Isn’t it fun when my fictional characters can make my life that much tastier?!!

What chocolate do you like?

From Stirring the Plot

Ingredients:

1 (3.5 to 4 ounce) bittersweet chocolate bar, chopped
1 ½ squares (1 ounce) unsweetened chocolate, chopped
5 tablespoons unsalted butter
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 ½ teaspoons coffee
2 eggs
1 egg yolk
3/4 cup white sugar
1/8 teaspoon salt
3 tablespoons flour (*may use gluten-free flour plus 1/8 teaspoon xanthan gum)
1/2 of a 3.5 to 4 ounce bittersweet chocolate bar broken into ½-inch pieces
If desired: whipped cream or frosting.

Note: I used Ghirardelli 72% dark chocolate instead of bittersweet chocolate.

stirring the plot

Directions:

Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Grease 4 mini-bundt cake cups.

Please 1 chopped bar of bittersweet chocolate, unsweetened chocolate, and butter in a microwave-safe bowl. Place bowl in microwave and cook on low power until the butter has melted and the chocolate is soft, about 2 to 3 minutes. Stir often to avoid burning the mixture.

In a mixing bowl, whisk cinnamon, coffee, eggs, egg yolk, sugar, and salt until combined. Stir in the flour. Mix in the chocolate mixture. Stir until smooth. Add the ½ bar of bittersweet chocolate that has been broken into ½-inch pieces. Spoon the batter in the prepared bundt cake cups. Fill about ¾ full.

Bake for about 15-18 minutes, until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out wit “streaks’ of thick batter. The tops of the cakes will be nearly firm. Remove from the oven and cool in the pan for 5 -10 minutes. Serve warm…or wait 20 minutes and serve at room temperature with whipped cream squirted into the center of the bundt shape.

Note: If you want to frost this cake, consider baking it in cupcakes tins or in a 9-inch springform pan lined with parchment paper. Cook about 30-35 minutes.

The Agatha Award–winning author of Stirring the Plot returns to the Cookbook Nook in Crystal Cove, California, where February brings Pirate Week, National Chocolate Month—and bitter murder…

Pirate Week is sweeping through Crystal Cove and keeping Jenna Hart and her bookstore, the Cookbook Nook, plenty busy. But she’s not too swamped to also host the local Chocolate Cookbook Club’s meeting—especially because the guest of honor is her friend, candy maker and cookbook author Coco Chastain.

Jenna whips up a delicious event amidst the rowdy festivities, but the mood is soon broken by robberies, simmering tempers, and a dead body—Coco’s editor, Alison. The suspects turn out to be more plentiful than a pot full of gold doubloons, so to prove Coco isn’t responsible for the dastardly deed, Jenna will have to stir up some clues and figure out who’s the real sticky-fingered killer…

INCLUDES RECIPES!

Dollycas’s Thoughts

February in Crystal Cove is busier than you may think. First they celebrate Pirate Week and then it is Valentine’s Day. At The Cookbook Nook there are also the book clubs that meet. This month the Chocolate Cookbook Club welcomes Jenna’s friend, Coco Chastain, author and candy maker extraordinaire. She brings her whole crew to the meeting and things get just a little tense. Her publisher, Allison, seems to be working on books for several of Crystal Cove’s residents. When she is found dead Coco becomes the prime suspect but Jenna knows that is more to the story. She starts to stir things up as she tries to find the real killer. She is also is trying to find the pirate’s booty that someone made off with. Can this be connected to the murder…

When I pick up a book by Daryl/Avery I know I am in for a fantastic treat and should plan accordingly. She delivers her best story yet in Fudging the Books.

Crystal Cove seemed to be a quiet little place until Jenna came to town but she has plenty of friends to support and know all these murders are not her fault. Aunt Vera does her best to keep Jenna in line and readers giggling. She is one special lady. Jenna’s relationship with Rhett is also evolving nicely. Vera’s romance has hit a little bump in the road though. Bailey has a new pet thanks to her beau, Tito, and she is having problems getting him to like her.

The mystery is so well thought out and presented. The perfect amount of twists to keep us guessing. The author strikes a nice balance with the right amount of romance and humor. The characters are fun and very appealing. You want to know them better and care about their lives. All this but don’t forget the food, this time there is chocolate, and lots of it thanks to Chef Katie.

The setting is wonderful too. Crystal Cove sounds like a great place to visit and I would drop a bundle of cash at The Cookbook Nook. The shop is not only full of cookbooks but cozy mysteries that feature food. Several of my favorite author grace the shelves.

This book is quite a treasure, with pirates, murder, romance, humor and food! (Recipes included.) I am already excited for my next visit!
