Joshua Fields takes the same flights every week for work, his life a series of departures and arrivals, hotels and airports. During yet another layover, he meets Morgan, a beautiful stranger with whom he feels an immediate connection. When it’s time for their respective flights, Morgan kisses Joshua passionately, lamenting that they’ll never see each other again.

As soon as Morgan disappears in the crowd, Joshua is shocked to see her face on a nearby TV. The reason: Morgan is a missing person.

What follows is a whirlwind, fast-paced journey filled with lies, deceit, and secrets as Joshua tries to discover why Morgan has vanished from her own life. Every time he thinks one mystery is solved, another rears its head—and his worst enemy might be his own assumptions about those around him.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

A chance meeting at an airport. Joshua feels an instant connection to Morgan. She gives him a killer kiss good-bye, but he can’t just let her go. He chucks his plan to meet his father to close a business deal and follows Morgan. He knows she is on the run and hiding something huge but he just can’t leave her behind. Joshua is soon mentally trapped into Morgan’s web and he could end up making the ultimate sacrifice all the be with a girl he met on a LAYOVER.

David Bell is one of my favorite authors but this one didn’t blow me away as others have.

Joshua Fields appears to be a very intelligent young man who may need a vacation from work but he keeps making bad decisions. I understand being in a rut and wanting change but I had a hard time believing the lengths he went to for a woman he just met and knew for all of a few minutes. He is a good guy but his first move was almost stalkerish. After that, though I realized Morgan was a master manipulator who knew just how to pull Joshua’s strings as soon as he continued to follow wherever she led.

I realize the premise of this book from an encounter the author actually witnessed but I just couldn’t get on board with it all. Maybe if the woman was a someone from his past, that he hadn’t seen in years I would have found it believable because they would have had a smidgen of history to build on.

Putting their meeting aside the story itself was complicated as Morgan’s story was revealed piece by piece from several viewpoints. The key was learning the true story and for that to come out there were several twists. Readers are treated to some suspenseful moments as the chase of Morgan and now Joshua continues. The author’s writing style of short chapters with mini-cliffhangers and alternate points of view worked very well. Those little teasers had me doing the just one more chapter thing over and over again. For me, the ending was unexpected and made me glad I had kept reading.

Aside from wanting to jump into the book several times to try to stop Joshua making stupid choices, this was a largely entertaining read.

Of course, I am looking forward to David Bell’s next thriller.

Somebody’s Daughter – When Michael Frazier’s ex-wife, Erica, unexpectedly shows up on his doorstep, she drops a bombshell that threatens to rip his family apart: Her ten-year-old daughter is missing–and Michael is the father. Unsure whether this is the truth but unwilling to leave the girl’s fate to chance, Michael has no choice but to follow the elusive trail of the child he has always wanted but never knew he had.

After Michael departs, his wife, Angela, learns shocking news about Erica and fears for the safety of both her husband and the endangered girl. When a stranger, a man who claims a connection to Erica and her missing daughter, knocks on the door, Angela is drawn out into the night–and deep into the tangled web of Michael’s past….

Over the course of one night, lies that span a decade come bubbling to the surface, putting Michael, his wife, and his whole family in jeopardy. And as the window for a little girl’s safe return closes, Michael will have to decide who can be trusted and who is hiding the truth….

Dollycas’s Thoughts

David Bell has yet to disappoint me. There is a reason he has become one of my favorite authors.

This story introduces us to Michael Frazier and his wife Angela. They have been trying desperately to have a child. Just as they are about to go to bed there is a knock on the door. Michael’s ex-wife Erica has come to beg his help in finding her daughter. Claiming the police are not doing enough, that she has no one else to turn to and then claiming that the girl is his daughter, he doesn’t know if he believes her but feels he has no choice but to go with her and search.

Angela is beside herself with worry and that only escalates when a strange man arrives at her door telling her his connection to Erica and her daughter. He convinces her to go with him to find her husband, his ex, and the lost 10-year-old.

Everyone’s life could change within the next few hours. Micheal knows he needs to find the truth but first, he needs to find that little girl. She IS Somebody’s Daughter.

Secrets, secrets, secrets! So many people keeping secrets and as each one is revealed the story takes another twist.  Michael life has not been easy. A tragic event from his past has truly shaped the life he has lived since. In just one night he learns so many things he didn’t know.  His quest to find the truth and this girl puts his life at risk as well as others, people he loves and people trying to help him.

Mr. Bell has a writing style that makes it virtually impossible to put the book down. The story is told from various points of view, which for me was very enjoyable.  His short chapters that leave you hanging  at each ending set a very brisk pace and an urgency to keep reading. I made the mistake of beginning this book on July 3. I read until I couldn’t hold my eyes open any longer. I took it with me to a family get together on the 4th hoping I would be able to keep reading, but that didn’t happen. As soon as we got home, I dashed to the bedroom to read and stayed up until I finished in the early morning hours on July 5. I had a heck of a book hangover when I got up, but it was so worth it. (This seems to happen to me a lot when reading books by this author.)

Bell also knows how to deliver that last final twist that caught me totally by surprise. Then he tied everything up nicely for me too. He even gives us a glimpse into the character’s future.

Another fantastic story by this author. Well-written, well-plotted, great characters – A “Perfect Escape”.

Just a year and a half after the tragic death of his wife, Bill Price’s fifteen-year-old daughter, Summer, and her best friend, Haley, disappear. Days later, the girls are found in a city park. Haley is dead at the scene, while Summer is left beaten beyond recognition and clinging to life.

As Bill holds vigil over Summer’s bandaged body, the only sound the unconscious girl can make is one cryptic and chilling word: No. And the more time Bill spends with Summer, the more he wonders what happened to her. Or if the injured girl in the hospital bed is really his daughter at all.

When troubling new questions about Summer’s life surface, Bill is not prepared for the aftershocks. He’ll soon discover that both the living and the dead have secrets. And that searching for the truth will tear open old wounds that pierce straight to the heart of his family…

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Each year I wait very impatiently for the new David Bell thriller. This year was no different and it was well worth the wait except I didn’t think so as I read Part One. Let me explain.

Two 15 year old girls disappear. Summer and Haley were just like sisters, they did everything together. Bill Price just thought his daughter Summer was pushing her limits by missing her curfew until the police call. The girls were found in a park. Haley is declared dead immediately but Summer is rushed to the hospital badly beaten in grave condition. Bill and his sister, Paige, remain by the bedside rubbing her arm and talking to her. Then Paige starts to wonder if the girl in the bed is really Summer at all. Something I thought very early in the story.

Then we get to Part Two and the classic David Bell twists start to evolve. Different suspects, different scenarios, and a father driven to find the truth. I am treading lightly here so as to not tell you anymore than what the synopsis of the book provides. When I reached Part Two of this book I could not put it down.

Having experienced the loss of a child albeit in a very different way, I felt Bill Price’s pain. It ripped right into my heart. This man wanted answers and he was going to do anything to get them. The police told him to let them do their job, he tried, but he couldn’t. I understood his passion, even when the outcome could be the worst thing he could imagine he couldn’t stop. As the story continues so do the twists and surprises and Bill never quits or backs down.

Bell knows how to tell a story with strong characters. His stories have many layers. There is drama from start to finish. The pacing is absolutely perfect and the way he writes pulls the reader deeper and deeper into the story. He also uses short chapters so even late at night the “I just read one more” overtakes you and before you know it you are finishing the story. Mr. Bell is responsible for my latest book hangover 🙂

Like everything else this man has written this is an excellent story, one that will stick with you beyond the final page. For suspense fans, this is a must read.

From David Bell—bestselling author of Somebody I Used to Know and Cemetery Girl—comes a chilling novel of guilt, regret, and a past which refuses to die…

Three months earlier, Jenna Barton was supposed to meet her lifelong best friend Celia. But when Jenna arrived late, she found that Celia had disappeared—and hasn’t been seen again. Jenna has blamed herself for her friend’s disappearance every single day since then.

The only piece of evidence is a lone diamond earring found where Celia and Jenna were planning to meet, leading the national media to dub Celia “The Diamond Mom.” And even though Jenna has obsessively surfed message boards devoted to missing persons cases, she is no closer to finding any answers—or easing her guilt.

But when her son’s new girlfriend—who suddenly arrived in town without a past—disappears, a stricken Jenna begins to unwind the tangled truth behind Celia’s tragedy. And as long-buried secrets finally come to light, she discovers how completely lives can be shattered by a few simple lies.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Jenna Barton is tormented by her friend Celia’s disappearance. If only she had been on time for the meeting….could she have been able to change what happened? She can’t give up, she is determined to find her friend even as she knows she may only find her body.

David Bell grabs the reader from the start. Jenna Barton has been called to an old barn because a body has been found. The press alerted her…  not the police. The way the press handles this story rings so true to me. I didn’t like it, but they dig and dig and report and release things to inform the public forgetting that people are struggling or grieving. I know the press has helped solve missing person cases so it is something the family and friends have to bear, but these journalists treated Jenna so awful it broke my heart.

The author introduces a second plot or subplot of Jenna’s son, Jared and his girlfriend, mostly told from Jared’s perspective. Teenagers, first love, only this time there are some twists that add to the main plot. Jenna, a single mom, works hard to provide for her son and tries to keep the lines of communication open with her son. This isn’t always easy with a 15 year old. Jared seems a little more mature in some ways but a little behind in others. Both story-lines are important and so well written.  I liked these characters very much. Their actions were sometimes impulsive and put them in danger but understandable in the realm of the entire story.

The pacing was perfect for me. It started out really strong. Then real life continued in everyone’s life but the mystery was always in the forefront and there were some suspenseful moments. Then as the story was approaching the reveal the suspense rose to a high level again. When it ended I felt a bunch of different emotions.

I have read and reviewed all of David Bell’s books. His is a brilliant storyteller. I look forward to each new book he writes and when the book arrives I have to read it right away.  My favorite is still The Forgotten Girl, but they have all been powerful reads.

When Nick Hansen sees the young woman at the grocery store, his heart stops. She is the spitting image of his college girlfriend, Marissa Minor, who died in a campus house fire twenty years earlier. But when Nick tries to speak to her, she acts skittish and rushes off.

The next morning the police arrive at Nick’s house and show him a photo of the woman from the store. She’s been found dead, murdered in a local motel, with Nick’s name and address on a piece of paper in her pocket.

Convinced there’s a connection between the two women, Nick enlists the help of his college friend Laurel Davidson to investigate the events leading up to the night of Marissa’s death. But the young woman’s murder is only the beginning…and the truths Nick uncovers may make him wish he never doubted the lies.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

I will not lie, David Bell has become one of my favorite suspense authors, right up there with Harlan Coben. When I see he has a new book coming out I have to have it and read it right away.

In Somebody I Used To Know Bell introduces us to Nick Hansen, a man trying to move forward while a big part of him is stuck in the past. Twenty years ago his college girlfriend, Marissa, died in a fire just 2 days after breaking up with him. His failure to put this behind him ruined his marriage and has him in a constant holding pattern. One day he sees someone that looks just like the girl that died. She even uses the same mannerisms. He realizes it can’t be her but she has to be related to Marissa. He tries to find out but the girl runs away. The next day the police come to his door and tell him the girl has been murdered and that she had his address in her pocket. He is their main suspect. Those days from all those years ago come flooding back, there has to be a connection to Marissa and he is going to find it and prove he did not kill the girl too!

I started reading and could not put this book down. I immediately became invested in Nick and his journey to find the truth. I thought I knew how this story was going to play out and I was partially right, a very small part. Bell threw in there quite a few unexpected twists which keep giving me more and more clues to decipher as I was led through a very riveting read.  Like every other book Bell has written the story has many layers and an intoxicating pace. You think just one more chapter and before you know it you have reached the end of the book.

I lost a distant relative to a campus fire several years ago that was wrapped up very quickly even though many questions were left unanswered so I found the story to be believable. Bell has grown so much as a writer from his start with Cemetery Girl. He continues to just keep getting better and better.

My only complaint – I can’t get this song out of my head. 🙂

The past has arrived uninvited at Jason Danvers’s door…

…and it’s his younger sister, Hayden, a former addict who severed all contact with her family as her life spiraled out of control. Now she’s clean and sober but in need of a desperate favor—she asks Jason and his wife to take care of her teenage daughter for forty-eight hours while she handles some business in town
But Hayden never returns.

And her disappearance brings up more unresolved problems from Jason’s past, including the abrupt departure of his best friend on their high school graduation night twenty-seven years earlier. When a body is discovered in the woods, the mysteries of his sister’s life—and possible death—deepen. And one by one these events will shatter every expectation Jason has ever had about families, about the awful truths that bind them and the secrets that should be taken to the grave.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

David Bell has become one of my favorite suspense authors. I couldn’t wait to read this book and all my expectations were fully met. He writes these stories that just draw you right in and don”t let go.

All the characters are flawed, some have bigger  problems than others but all are dealing with something. Jason and Nora  moved back to Ohio when their jobs in New York were  eliminated. They never had children, their careers always came first.  Jason and his sister Hayden have not spoken or seen each other in years. She always ran with a group of troublemakers and drugs and alcohol were what controlled her life.  Even her daughter Sierra could not help her stay straight. But now Sierra is 17 years old and Hayden promises she is clean. She just needs to tie up some loose ends and asks Nora and Jason to take in Sierra for 48 hours. But the 48 hours comes and goes and Hayden has not returned. They want to believe she has changed but the doubts are there. Especially when questions are being asked about a friend who disappeared 27 years ago. Can Hayden’s  disappearance be connected to that one? Could Jason have changed the past?

We all remember those parties we attended in high school or college. One party on a graduation night is what starts this whole story in motion.

Bell takes us on quite a trip trying to understand what happened in the past and how it is affecting lives today. Lies, secrets, deception, desperation and fear all play huge parts of this thrilling mystery.

The story has layers making readers really pay attention and even making us read between the lines. The crazy twists that I have come to expect from this author turn things upside town and inside out.  He weaves together the past and present with such precision and makes this book almost impossible to put down. At over 400 pages I knew I was going to have to break it up over 2 or 3 nights but it was so hard and I didn’t want to do anything like work during the day, I just wanted to get back to reading this book. The was more than one time I was on the edge of my seat. One chapter would end and I would think just one more and then it was one more. I read it in two nights but this book has stuck with me for days.

David Bell is a fantastic storyteller that continues to top himself with each new mystery. This one deserves more than 5 stars! I truly cannot wait to see what this man comes up with next.

Leslie Hampton’s life revolves around the care of her special needs son.  Her daughter, Elizabeth,  is going to college for her Master’s Degree and that keeps her quite busy. When her mother asks her to make a commitment to take care of Ronnie if she passes away they get into a huge fight.

Weeks go by and Leslie passes away very unexpectedly. The police believe her son Ronnie killed her in a fit of temper. Elizabeth can’t believe her brother would hurt their mother. In fact she can’t think of anyone that would want to hurt Leslie Hampton.  Her mother’s death catapults  “Elizabeth into a world of danger and double lives that undoes everything she thought she knew….”

Dollycas’s Thoughts

I am kicking myself for waiting so long to read this book! Once I started it I couldn’t put it down. David Bell owes me a good night sleep because even as I finished the book I couldn’t stop thinking about it.

Ronnie has Down’s Syndrome but you could tell his mother and his therapists really had done a good job with  him. He was rocked by his mother’s death and all the aftermath. That would have been extremely hard on anyone let alone a young man with his disorder.

I really felt compassion for Elizabeth as well. We have all had disagreements with our parents and we never think that could be the last conversation we have with them. She also is a very closed off person, afraid to let anyone in to help her, much like her mother. I think she had a really hard time growing up with her mother devoting all her time to Ronnie and even saying to Elizabeth that the reason she was born was that there needed to be someone to take care of Ronnie when she was gone. Then after her mother passes away she has to deal with Ronnie plus all the secrets her mother kept from her. It was heartbreaking.

Bell has written a psychological mystery with more twists than a corkscrew and the last one really threw me. His writing always has layers, some are written out there right on the page and for others you need to read between the lines. He also writes in such a way that the reader is so drawn in that it is very hard to put the book down.

The one drawback that I have found with all 3 David Bell novels is that the book synopses on the back of the book and used for promotion gives too much away. That is why I don’t read more than the first line or two of a synopsis. If it draws me in I’ll read the book. I definitely don’t want to know any of the twists or crucial parts of the mysteries. A synopsis shouldn’t be a spoiler it should be a teaser to make you want to read the story.

This was my favorite Bell mystery so far. I am really looking forward to the next one.

The Hiding Place

Four year old Justin Manning disappeared twenty five years ago from a neighborhood park where he and his sister were playing. It was the first time they went to the park alone. Their mother thought there would be plenty of adults there to watch them and she had to have an important discussion with her husband. Justin’s body was found two months later in a shallow grave in the woods. But was it really his body?

As the 25th anniversary approaches and the man accused of his murder is granted parole, a detective and a newspaper reporter have started to ask questions. They are opening old wounds and raising new suspicions. Could the man convicted be innocent? Old memories are returning but are they real memories or what has been imagined over the years. Then a strange man appears at Janet’s door in the middle of the night claiming to know the truth. Can Janet handle the truth?

Dollycas’s Thoughts

In his follow up to Cemetery Girl David Bell has delivered another suspenseful and haunting tale.

I immediately become invested in Janet’s life. What really happened that day in the park? Was her brother really dead? How has  it affected her life to this day? How has it affected her daughter Ashleigh and her father?  Did an innocent man spend years in prison? Like Cemetery Girl there are many layers to this story.

The plot twists, the psychological depths, the frightening realization, evolved at an riveting pace. This story also shines a light on how much a police investigation has changed in twenty five years. Circumstantial cases that delivered guilty verdicts then hopefully would not make it through the judicial system today.

I did figure out the “surprise” ending early but David Bell is an author I will continue to follow and will be waiting to read his next thrilling novel.
