Do No Harm: A Dr. Katie LeClair Mystery
Mystery/ Amateur Sleuth
2nd in Series
Setting – Michigan
Crooked Lane Books (December 11, 2018)
Hardcover: 288 pages

ISBN-13: 978-1683317876
Kindle ASIN: B078M3J4FK

Small-town doctor Katie LeClair is drawn back into an old murder investigation, a mysterious disappearance, and a dark undercurrent of violence.

The idyllic town of Baxter, Michigan, seemed like the perfect place for Dr. Katie LeClair to settle down after years toiling in medical school—until the murder of a patient shattered the peace she had found. Now on the mend and balancing the responsibilities of a new house and the joys of a new romance, Katie is finally ready to start enjoying life. But danger arrives just as the town is gearing up for its annual Halloween festival—and once again, this doctor-turned-sleuth will have to unmask a killer in their midst.

Trouble comes in threes this Halloween. Katie sees a new patient who has just been released from prison for a murder he says he didn’t commit. Inexplicably, the patient suddenly goes missing. And matters take an even more sinister turn when a college student who had been investigating Katie’s old murder case is found dead in the woods near Baxter.

Could Katie’s involvement with the case be responsible for the student’s violent death? Is her new patient truly a cold-blooded murderer? Is this Halloween about to become a real-life horror show?

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Dr. Katie LeClair is settling in and getting comfortable in Baxter, Michigan. Circumstances in book 1 have left the clinic shorthanded but Katie’s doctor boyfriend is filling in and picking up the slack.

Set in late October we meet Katie’s new patient Eugene Lowe, who has just been released from prison for a murder he still claims he didn’t commit. We also learn a young college student who had previously worked with Katie is missing. Taylor Knox just happened to be researching Lowe’s case for one of her classes when she went missing. After the girl’s body is found Eugene goes missing knowing he will be the prime suspect. Katie believes Eugene didn’t kill Taylor and probably didn’t kill the first woman either, she just has to prove it. With her brother Caleb techy knowledge and skills, she may be able to find the real killer.

I really like Katie LeClair, she is not only strong and smart she is compassionate and caring. She is not quick to judge and strives to get the true facts. Her brother Caleb has her back and is a great sounding board. New boyfriend Matt, also a doctor, wishes she would leave matters to police but knows Katie will not back away from the case so he also helps in any way he can. These characters are realistic and people I would like to know in real life. Ms. Eastman has also created a wonderful cast of secondary characters as well that clearly could be found in any small Midwestern town.

The mystery twists around and connects to Katie in different ways giving her the means to insert herself in key ways to follow up on clues and other information she has uncovered. I particularly enjoyed the way the police chief appreciated Katie’s input. The story had a rapid pace and elements that take this land this in the traditional mystery category. There was suspense in all the rights places and the author takes us on a great journey.

While this story can be read as a stand alone I believe the series should be read in order for maximum enjoyment. There are spoilers in this book if you plan to go back and read Unnatural Causes after reading this book.

Dawn Eastman has a writing style that I really enjoy. This is a great addition to this series.

Katie LeClair has finally settled down as the new doctor in Baxter, MI. After years of moving, schooling, and training, she wants nothing more than to find a place she can call home, and a small town outside of Ann Arbor seemed perfect.

Katie quickly gets to work on building a life for herself in Baxter, and beyond reviving her love life, she also finds a pair of business partners in a team of father and son family practitioners. But that idyllic dream is immediately shattered when one of her patients is found dead. That wouldn’t be the worst thing, except the death is ruled a suicide, and as evidence has it, the suicide was a result of the medication Katie had prescribed. But she doesn’t remember writing it.

When a closer investigation reveals it was murder, Katie is catapulted into an off-the-books investigation that leads her down a dark path of past secrets. But someone is willing to kill to keep part of the town’s history in the shadows, and Katie must race to find out who before it’s too late in nationally bestselling author Dawn Eastman’s riveting series debut Unnatural Causes.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

I originally stayed away from this book because of the suicide theme, but now that the holidays, anniversary of my son’s birth and death have passed I was able to read and enjoy the story.

Katie LeClair fresh out of residency has taken a job at a clinic in Baxter, Michigan. She has only been there a few months when one of her patients dies in the emergency room. Her death has been ruled a suicide by overdose. An overdose of a drug that was prescribed by Katie. The problem is Katie doesn’t remember writing a script for the woman. There is also no record of it in the patient’s file.

When the autopsy comes in it contains a couple of surprises, including that the patient was actually murdered. Due to the original suicide ruling evidence has been lost so Katie starts investigating on her own with some shocking discoveries. Discoveries that put Katie in danger. This unusual death could claim one more victim.

Katie LeClair is a dedicated physician that wants to give her patients the best possible care. Her partners are a father and son and together they share clinic and hospital duties. She meets a diverse group of people at the clinic needing all different types of care.  She lives with her younger brother, a real computer genius. Together they are still dealing with the loss of their mother several years ago. Katie also meets another young doctor that could lead to a romantic relationship. Due to a freak event, she is also close to the Baxter police chief.  All of these characters come together naturally and are very well written.

Ms. Eastman gives readers a very suspenseful story. There is a lot going on and the suspects were tangled together in so many ways. I think the police really made a blunder my labeling the death as a suicide before they had the autopsy report. Thankfully Katie was doing some digging initially on her own. Clues were dropped nicely for us readers to follow but I was still juggling suspects when the killer was revealed.

A subplot deals with a very relevant 2018 topic. I was impressed by the way this was handled.

I am a huge fan of Dawn Eastman’s stories.  This story had a darker feel than her Family Fortune Mysteries, but I enjoyed it just a much. I love the way she tells a story.

Wow!
This is a step up from a cozy but not as dark and most police type procedural novel . . .I liked getting to know Katie as the story progressed. I definitely want to get to know her better in upcoming books.

Yes, folks, I did it again, scheduled myself to read so many new ones I didn’t get a book read for #FlashbackFriday today. Former cop and novice psychic Clyde Fortune finds herself in a race for justice when a Zombie Fun Run turns deadly…

All of Crystal Haven, Michigan, is psyching up to participate in a Zombie Fun Run organized by Clyde’s nephew Seth, but Clyde is fretful about the undead festivities. For one thing, her sister, Grace, has unexpectedly returned to town after fifteen years. For another, Clyde has the nagging feeling that something is about to go wrong…

When one of the zombie runners is found murdered and then Grace disappears, Clyde realizes her grim premonition is dead-on. Now, she and her police detective boyfriend Mac must find a ghoulish murderer before someone points the finger at Grace. And when a tangled web of family secrets and old grudges combines with a mysterious case of stolen diamonds, even someone as quick-witted as Clyde might not be able to outrun a killer…

Dollycas’s Thoughts

We have come a long way with these characters and in this installment Clyde’s sister, Grace, and her husband, Paul, come to Crystal Haven for a visit. This is the first time in fifteen years that Grace has returned. She didn’t want anything to do with the psychic abilities of her family even though she has an ability herself that she uses daily. That ability may be why she has come home. Of course, seeing her son Seth, is always a bonus.

They quickly get caught up in a town celebration that includes a Zombie Fun Run. This is the 2nd book I have read recently that has included a zombie event in a town celebration. Zombies aren’t really my thing but since these were costume events and no actual zombies were featured so I enjoyed it quite a bit.

When the fun run ends, the partying begins for all but one of the participants. One of the runners didn’t show up at the party and was found murdered in the woods. Grace has only been in town a couple of days and someone decides she or Paul could be the murderer/s. With Mac on the police department Clyde knows he will prove their innocence, but it doesn’t stop her for doing a little investigating too.

This story is absolutely fantastic! So much happens within these pages and I don’t want to give anything away.

Dawn Eastman has written a very captivating mystery featuring the characters we have grown to love. I have my reservations about Grace and Paul but their situation is pretty precarious so that may tilt the scales more in their favor. Clyde’s family is a little over the top. I love Aunt Vi. Sometimes I want to hug her and other times I want to lock her in the basement and throw away the key. Mac handles her much better than I ever could. The Fortune Family is not your normal Midwest family but Mac loves Clyde so her family and all their shenanigans are part of the package. Yes, even when they find a dead body or try to find some “lost” diamonds.

The paranormal aspect was a little more present in this story as Clyde tries to refine her gift. It has become more interesting as she learns her capabilities.

Each of these stories is even better than the last. This is one of my favorite books I have read this year. I highly recommend the entire series.

After their flight to Mexico is cancelled, Clyde and her detective boyfriend, Mac, end up snowed in with their families at a supposedly haunted hotel. Clyde’s tarot card reading mother, Rose, is making dire predictions for the weekend, and self-proclaimed pet psychic Aunt Vi is enchanted by the legend of the hotel’s ghost—until the power goes out and a body turns up.

With a hotel full of stranded suspects, Clyde will have to draw on all her skills—both the police ones she’d rather forget and the psychic ones she’d rather ignore—to solve the bone-chilling mystery before someone else gets iced…

Dollycas’s Thoughts

All Clyde and Mac wanted was to get away from the Michigan cold and their overwhelming families. Time alone catching rays on a beach in Mexico is delightful, it was for me and Mr. Dollycas but Clyde and Mac don’t even make it to the airport before it starts snowing and I mean really snowing. Mac tries to save the day by taking Clyde to a wonderful castle/hotel to wait out the storm but as soon as the arrive who do they find? Their mothers and Aunt Vi and a bunch of knitters on a weekend retreat. To make matter worse there are no vacancies and Clyde ends up sharing a room with her aunt and her mother and Mac joins his mother in her room. I definitely would have set things up a little differently, sent Mac’s mom to bunk with Rose and Vi and let Mac and Clyde have a room to themselves, but with this family that was not happening. The blizzard seems to camp right over the hotel so everyone is stuck there and the power and phones go out. Oh and one of the owners is murdered shortly thereafter. Now Clyde and Mac have a hotel full of suspects and Aunt Vi wanting to help them investigate. Can their relationship endure this much family togetherness?

Eastman has given us quite a closed room (building) mystery. One of the guests or the staff is a murderer and surprisingly almost anyone could have done it. Vi is even accused at one point. I liked the way Mac and Clyde took charge and interviewed almost everyone. Someone called them on their authority but it didn’t stop them.

Sitting here in the Wisconsin cold with the snow blowing outside I snuggled under a blanket with a cup of hot chocolate and escaped right into this book. As you can see from the cover the dogs even show up at the hotel (their arrival is pretty funny) and I had my Nerabelle curled right up at my feet too.

These characters are a lot of fun. The Fortunes are a unique bunch with their tarot cards and such, but lovable in their own overbearing way.  Clyde is getting close to the one-year mark when she needs to decide whether or not she is going to stay in Crystal Haven and her family can’t help but share their opinions. The men in this family are truly outnumbered and outmatched. Eastman has poured her all into these characters.

Carlisle Castle is a wonderful place. The home has been turned into a hotel and the place is full of antiques. Their are rooms in the turrets and hidden stairways and big fireplaces. It is rumored to have a resident ghost too! I wonder if this is based on a real place in Michigan. I would love to visit.

The paranormal aspect in this story was pretty light. Vi and Rose’s attempts to use their “powers” to help wasn’t too successful and Clyde is still learning her capabilities. Seth has some keen insights.

The knitter’s retreat really added some entertaining moments. I learned about yarn bombing and was in awe at some of the items. It would have been a perfect event without the dead body. Snowed in with all the yarn you could imagine with plenty of time to just knit and purl and create.

This is just the 3rd book in this series so I do recommend you start at the beginning so you meet this Fortune – ate family from the start. They have been called “kooky” by several reviewers but I don’t think they are on the same plane as the kooky Adam’s Family, but they are special. You deserve to enjoy them from the beginning. If you are already a fan you know just what I mean.

The Revenge Character
by Dawn Eastman

Characters seem to come to me from the strangest places. Sometimes, I simply need a character for a specific job in the story. It’s a bit like a job interview. For instance, in a mystery novel, there has to be a victim, a sleuth, and a villain. But sometimes a character appears who isn’t technically necessary to the plot, but who adds a wonderful dimension to the story. And often they are created in a roundabout way. Seth Proffit, my sleuth’s nephew, is one of those characters.

COVERI live with a teenager and a tween. Be Careful What You Witch For is dedicated to the teenager. Six or so years ago, when I was writing the first book in the Family Fortune Mystery series, I was engaged in a pitched battle with my oldest child over when he could ride in the front seat of the car. I’m a physician and my husband is a physician and we tend to be conservative when it comes to things like bike helmets, trampolines, and automobile safety. Insurance companies love us. My son really wanted to ride in the front seat even though the guidelines said he wasn’t yet tall enough or old enough. Everyone he knew was in the front – even younger kids! Looking back, we probably could have loosened up the rules a bit, but as our first child, we tend to practice on him so we can get it right for the next one.

Finally, the glorious day came when he was allowed to ride in the front seat. He. Drove. Me. Nuts. He kept up a running commentary on how much better the view was, constantly adjusted the seat (including putting it all the way back so he could nap on the way to the grocery store which was two minutes from the house), flipped radio stations and pressed every button within reach. It was more than I could take and I almost banished him to the dreaded backseat. I warned him. I really did. I said, “If you don’t knock it off, I’m going to write all of this in my book.” He was undeterred. For one thing, I wasn’t published yet, so how many people would actually see my threatened exposé? Well, I warned him.

pall in the family

The beginning of Pall in the Family wasn’t right. It needed tweaking, and the boy had gotten on my last nerve. So, with an immature desire for revenge, which I would regret if not for the wonderful result, I wrote a scene with a character named Seth who drove Clyde nuts. He chattered constantly and messed up the seats in her car, he had something to say about her every action and opinion. He slouched, he sulked, he was like a monkey on speed. My son thought it was hilarious and even added his own slant to the ridiculous scene. We had a good laugh over the whole thing and I hit delete.

But Seth did not accept his fate. He kept coming back, inserting himself into the story. He promised to tone things down and be helpful. He stopped adjusting the seat and pressing the buttons. He developed a relationship with the dogs. He ended up being one of my favorite characters to write and one of the most mentioned favorite characters of readers. He has obviously strayed far from his roots. He is now his own person and there is nothing in the books that can be directly related to anything my son has ever done. For one thing, as far as I know, my son is not an animal psychic. But they do share a gentle nature, and an acceptance of others that I admire. And a snarky sense of humor.

Seth, and the rest of the gang return in Be Careful What You Witch For.They look forward to spending time with you.

But after another coven member is attacked, Clyde suspects there’s a witch hunt afoot and focuses her psychic and sleuthing skills to clear her friend’s name and catch a killer.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Crystal Haven’s Fall Festival has something for everyone, a bonfire, a boiling cauldron, and even a dead body. Okay so the dead body of Rafe Godwin was not part of the planned festivities but it will definitely make the event memorable.

Clytemnestra, oh what a name, (Clyde) is right in the middle of another murder investigation and her “gift” is really haunting her. She has dreams about things that seem to be happening in the future but she really doesn’t understand her ability yet. Can she change the future? She enlists a little help from woman she never imagined ever visiting hopeful that it will help her dreams not be such nightmares.

Clyde’s family takes eccentric to a whole new level. With the exception of her father they all have different special gifts. Aunt Vi is an absolute hoot and a half. I would only be able to handle her myself in very small doses but she does really add the humor to the story.

Diana, Clyde’s best friend finds herself in hot water when it appears Rafe died of an allergic reaction from a piece of bread she had baked but then the prime suspect quickly becomes her brother Dylan. The Fortune family goes into overdrive using all their crystals and pendulums. They even stakeout suspects and follow them to try to catch the real killer.

Seth has also returned to Crystal Haven. I really felt for this teenager who has learned he also has a special gift and it is unbearable in the big city. His mother has vowed not to return to Crystal Haven but she just may have to if she wants to do what is best for her son.

Eastman has brewed up a real mystery for us readers to enjoy. The paranormal parts are not overpowering, they just give the story a very interesting element. There is the perfect balance of spooky, mystery, humor and romance. We also see that not everyone is happy with the Wiccans having so much of a presence in the community. Even Clyde catches herself making presumptions.

The Fortunes are not your normal American family but I sure love our visits with them. Then again my family is far from normal but I don’t think we have anyone with these nice spiritual gifts 🙂 but there are times I wish they did.

A truly charming mystery that I highly recommend. Fun and entertaining. You may catch yourself laughing out loud.

cozy wednesday 2013 640Welcome to Cozy Wednesday!

I am thrilled to Welcome Dawn Eastman here today!!

What’s in a name?

headshot dawn eastmanThank you, Lori, for inviting me to Cozy Wednesday! I’m glad to be here.

PALL IN THE FAMILYMy debut novel, Pall in the Family, was released on August 6.  Because I use my maiden name as my pen name, I get a lot of questions about why I chose to use something other than my “real” name. The short answer is that my married name is hard to spell and pronounce. But the questions got me thinking about names, and how they are chosen.

When I was eight years old, I wanted a different first name. Dawn was too simple and too plain for me. I wanted something substantial like Samantha or Alexandra. Something with more syllables. However, I planned to shorten the name to Sam or Alex as a nickname. There’s no nickname for Dawn. It’s probably the same desire to pretend to be a fireman or a princess. What would life be like with a different name?

Now that I am a writer, I get to be all sorts of people with different names – at least in my head. I can be a pet psychic who longs for adventure when I blog as Violet Greer. I have adventures and live in a lovely small town when I write as Clyde.

Reflecting my childhood name-changing desires, many of my characters have changed their own names. Clytemnestra Fortune shortened her name to Clyde, much to her mother’s dismay. Mac McKenzie is actually named Phillip McKenzie. And Clyde’s sister married a man named Proffit after she discovered her talent for predicting the stock market.

Then there’s Diana. A few years ago, when I was working on Pall in the Family, a writer friend sent me a link to a website where you can enter your name (or any phrase) and it will kick out an anagram. Since there’s nothing a writer likes more than a distraction that can be called “work,” I quickly clicked on the link. (Try it for yourself here: http://www.arrak.fi/en/ag – I’ll wait) My married name produced a whole list, but one of them jumped out at me: Diana Moonward.

I loved the way it tied the name Diana to the moon, since Diana is the moon goddess. Moonward, as if she is leaning toward the moon. At the time, Clyde didn’t have a best friend who was a Wiccan and owned a witch supply store. But what else would a person name Diana Moonward do?

One of my favorite authors is JK Rowling. The names she uses in her Harry Potter series are so fantastic and they are like a little treasure hunt. Sirius is the dog star and her character Sirius Black changes into a large black dog. If someone is lupine, they are wolf-like and Professor Lupin turns into a werewolf. Luna Lovegood is a little on the crazy side but loyal to her friends.

What do you think? Do you notice character names and look for deeper meanings? Do you have any favorite character names? Are you happy with your name, or do you wish for something different? I’d love to discuss it in the comments!

~Dawn

The aptly named Crystal Haven is the destination for tourists seeking psychics, séances, and the promise of contacting the spirit world. In this small western Michigan town, everyone knows the Fortune family. Rose is gifted with tarot card readings. Her sister, Vi, is a self-proclaimed pet psychic. And Rose’s daughter Clyde is… …

A cop. She has returned home from Ann Arbor on a “leave of absence”. No one really knows the whole story.  Her mom and aunt think she has come home because she is ready to join the family business and use her psychic gift.  Clyde would just like to relax and reflectand is happy walking some of her Aunt Vi’s clients and spending time with her nephew Seth.  But when a local psychic ends up dead Clyde finds herself right in the middle of the investigation and when the killer thinks she may “know” more than it seems her own life is danger.  Her trip home is definitely not a good fortune.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Clytemnestra, oh what a name, (Clyde) is quite a character! Trying to remain “normal” in a family of psychics is tough. It has already cost her one romantic relationship and maybe her job, but she is trying to hold it all together in a town where she is definitely in the minority. Crystal Haven is known for its psychics and is a major tourist destination for that reason.

She wants to let the police handle the investigation but her family wants her to “help””. Her father doesn’t have any “gifts” but he has his police scanner handy and will do almost anything Rose tells him to do. The way he deals with the women in his family just cracked me up.  Clyde, Rose, Vi and even Seth are all using crystals, pendulums, and following suspects around town to try and catch the killer. Hilarity ensues!!

From the first pages when a bat is chased around the house and out an open window until the last page when a question asked long ago is answered, this book will have you fully engaged and captivated. I would classify this as paranormal light. You don’t need to believe  to enjoy this story but you may believe a little by the end.

This is the author’s first novel and she has created a divine cozy. I don’t need a fortune teller to know this series has a promising future.
