Smugglers on the hunt, a police chief on the run, lost loot and a dead wedding planner have the Mackinac Island regulars riding in circles

After solving two murders, bike shop owner Evie Bloomfield thought life on Mackinac Island would settle into boredom until she finds out Nate Sutter, island police chief and once-upon-a-time under cover cop is on the run. Some badass guys from Nate’s Detroit days think he stole money from them in a champagne smuggling operation and now they’re headed to the island to get their loot. Evie is determined to help Nate because he’s a good cop, Nate is determined to keep interfering Evie and island locals out of harms way, and the crooks are determined to get their money.

To add to the island’s problems there’s a dead guy on the dock and the new wedding planner is more interested in playing bedroom bingo than ordering bridal bouquets.
With the help of Fiona, Evie’s BFF and local newspaper editor, Evie is determined to prove Nate innocent, figure out how champagne smuggling, bodies on the dock and a bad wedding planner are tied together and not wind up taking a long walk off a short pier herself.

Reagan Summerside returns in national bestselling author Duffy Brown’s fifth Consignment Shop mystery, now for the first time in hardcover.

There are two social functions in Savannah guaranteed to get people talking: weddings and funerals. And just as consignment shop owner Reagan Summerside agrees to marry the hunky Walker Boone, her neighbors, sisters Annie Fritz and Elsie Abbot, step up their business as professional mourners. They are so successful that the Sleepy Pines Retirement Center has hired them as a part of their retirement package. But the celebration over good business is cut short when the residents at Pines suddenly begin dying at an alarming rate. And the sisters are the first suspects.

Reagan has her doubts, however, and begins to look into the strange phenomenon. But then something even stranger happens: a body winds up in the sisters’ pink Caddy. The evidence begins to pile up and the suspicious case of Willie Fishbine, who swindled the sisters out of a fortune and coincidentally died prior to the Pines case, is reopened.

Not wanting Willie to be buried until they can find the killer responsible for the murders, Reagan must catch the culprit in time to walk down the aisle.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

I was over the moon when I heard this series had found a new home. This is one of my favorite series and I sure wasn’t done with these wonderful characters.

Something I have been waiting for is moving forward in this book. Boone pops the question and Reagan says yes. They are moving forward in their life together with some major decisions like where they will live and the renovations that may be needed. Due to some crazy circumstances, their wedding party is going to be filled with some people I never suspected. That’s the good news. The bad news is a dead body is found in sisters Annie Fritz and Elsie Abbot garden and another body with casket is hidden in Aunt Kiki’s garage. Both are connected to the Sleepy Pines Retirement Center and the sisters are prime suspects for what could be two murders. Aunt Kiki decides to go undercover in the retirement home to help Reagan solve the case.

Reagan Summerside owns the Prissy Fox Consignment Shop and her neighbors Annie Fritz and Elsie Abbot’s help out at the shop while Reagan is out trying to plan her wedding or catch a killer. Her mother, Judge Gloria and her Aunt Kiki are usually along for both. Her new fiancee Walker Boone does his best to keep all of them out of trouble. With two murders to solve his task is far from easy. I had so much fun following along with their antics. Ms. Brown’s Savannah, Georgia has its hands full with this gang,

Southern charm, snappy dialogue, genuine, unique characters, laugh out loud moments, and a top-notch whodunit grace the pages of Lethal and Old Lace. From the very first word until the last this story completely entertains.

I love the way Duffy Brown writes. Each new story quickly becomes my favorite. It was a bit of a wait for this book, but it was so worth the wait. It surpasses a perfect escape by quite a bit. Yes, this book gets my Paradise Rating. Thank you, Duffy Brown, for this marvelous story!

Hotels…the good, the bad, the is that a dead body on the porch?

The Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island is a big part of Braking For Bodies, the second book in the Cycle Path mysteries.

BRAKING FOR BODIESThe hotel is spectacular. It is an old hotel with a front porch two football fields long making it the longest in the world. The Grand is in pristine condition where high tea is served promptly at four o’clock, guests must dress for dinner and the rooms are named, lovely and all unique. Wouldn’t you just love to stay in the Jacqueline Kennedy room?

In Braking For BodiesMI 1 there is a dead guy of course but the good news is that Peephole Perry won’t be missed. (Party’s at seven, fireworks at nine). Most are tickled to see the Peepster flat on his back and toes up.

But the bad part of all this is that he just happens to be at the Grand Hotel in his present lifeless condition and dead people are not good for business. If word gets out that there’s a killer lose on the island, tourists will storm the ferry docks to get the heck off the place. Rooms will be vacant, bars empty, lines at the unemployment office long. But maybe there’s a way out after all…

“What’s going on?” A guy called down from the porch of the Grand Hotel right above us. “Is somebody there? Did somebody fall?”

Sutter and I exchanged uh oh looks and a woman on the porch squealed. “Ohmygoodness! It’s a body! This is fantastic! I know what this is. It’s one of those murder mystery weekends right here at the Grand Hotel. The victim’s right there, I can see him all sprawled out on the ground. Oh this is so much fun.”

“Look, lady,” Sutter shot back. “This is no mystery weekend party this is a real crime scene here.”

“Of course it is,” she squealed again. “You all are great actors, this is amazing. What a fantastic surprise right here on Mackinac Island.”

Policeman Nate tries to set the tourists straight, like this is a real crime scene at the Grand Hotel. The harder he tries the more the tourists think he’s a fantastic actor and part of their mystery weekend at the Grand.

So the question is, have you ever attended a murder mystery weekend? Dinner party? Was it fun? Were you in character and did you have a part. And most important did you find the killer?

Evie Bloomfield puts the pedal to the metal—in the latest Cycle Path mystery from the national bestselling author of Geared for the Grave.

Moving from Los Angeles to small, picturesque Mackinac Island to work in a bike shop might seem crazy, but Evie knows it’s the best decision she’s ever made. That’s not to say she’s gotten rid of all her stress; after all, the upcoming Lilac Festival has everyone in town riding in circles.

But things really go downhill when a ferry full of tourists—including Evie’s friend Fiona’s former boss, the editor of a sleazy rag in LA—arrives on the island. No one knows why Peephole Perry came all the way to Mackinac, but things aren’t looking good for Fiona when Peep is found dead. Now Evie has to gear up and get a grip on the truth if she wants to clear her friend’s name…

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Pack your bags we are headed for Mackinac Island for the Lilac Festival!!

There are tourists everywhere and even a few people posing as tourists. Evie’s friend Fiona is shocked when her former boss, Peephole Perry, gets off the ferry. This can’t be good. His trip is cut short when he is found dead outside of The Grand Hotel. This isn’t good for Peep or the island. A dead body could mean cancelled reservations and a mass exodus of the guests that have already arrived. When one of the hotel’s guests thinks it is a murder mystery game, Evie convinces Police Chief Sutter that this is a great cover so he (with her help) can catch the killer. Unfortunately all the evidence points at Fiona so Evie needs to catch a “brake” to prove her innocence.

I have to start by saying if you need a pick me up pick up this book! I was laughing, giggling, and almost rolling on the floor laughing throughout the entire book. I know murder is a serious thing but poor Evie, she has so many things to do and so many things go wrong, she has to find the humor or she would spend the whole book in tears. From a missing wedding dress, to a mistress, and a few near misses that may have been attempts on her life, Evie treks back and forth around the island trying to do everything asked of her and more.

Duffy Brown brings us back to this idyllic island to follow around Evie Bloomfield. Evie is a smart woman with a very unique business, renting one of a kind bicycles that she has painted herself. You can rent the music bike, or the Sherlock bike, one of the many lilac bikes or any other of the very imaginatively themed bicycles. Evie’s mother has returned to the island and has opened her law office behind bike shop. There is a fudge shop right next door and Rudy, the original owner of the bike shop, splits his time between the 2 places. His thoughts are more on keeping his bride to be happy than anything else.

I am totally in awe of the way Ms. Brown writes. I was grabbed from the first page. My attention was completely held until the last word. To be truthful I didn’t want the story to end. The whole murder mystery game just had me in stitches. At least 4 teams of people were tracking down “clues” and creating theories to catch the culprit. The way the main characters dealt with them all while really trying to solve the mystery itself was truly a unique plot idea.

A great addition to this series. Murder and yes, mayhem along with wonderful characters shine in this Cycle Path Mystery. I have already been to Rudy’s Rides and reserved the Nancy Drew bike for our next excursion to this wonderful place!

The Cozy Chicks realized that tea was such a perfect complement to cozy mysteries that we decided to write a book about it. Not only does Tea Time with the Cozy Chicks have delicious recipes, but it also includes themed tea menus, fascinating articles, fun facts, curious quotes, and helpful hints on how to host the most memorable tea parties ever! And for an extra treat, a few of us have included excerpts of our work as well! Read, cook, drink tea, savor, and most of all enjoy!

guest post

Tea parties have been around for well over 3,000 years. People on all parts of the earth have tea parties every day. So sit down, pour yourself a cup of tea, and let me tell you about Tea Time With the Cozy Chicks.

First of all who are the Cozy Chicks? If you haven’t visited our blog before, please pop by http://www.cozychicksblog.com. It’s a great way to get to know us and to catch a glimpse at the crazy life of a mystery writer. The Cozy Chicks are…Ellery Adams, Lorraine Bartlett, Duffy Brown, Kate Collins, Mary Kennedy, Mary Jane Maffini, Maggie Sefton, Leann Sweeney.

We write cozy mysteries and in our books characters often gather around the table to discuss cases. They drink a staggering amount of caffeinated beverages and seem to be surrounded by an endless array of mouth-watering sandwiches, cookies, pastries, and chocolate. In short, these gals in our books have a pretty good time…unless theyre chasing the killer…and we thought it would be fun to spend a little time in their world.

The result is Tea Time With The Cozy Chicks filled with the lore of tea in so many of its incarnations. The book offers an assortment of tea parties like how to have a Bon Voyage tea, bachelorette tea, proper Yorkshire Tea, Chocolate Lovers tea etc. There are menus for each party, invitation suggestions, decorations, flowers, table settings, recipes galore and all hosted by characters from our books to add to the fun.

An afternoon tea party is suitable for many celebrations and isn’t as involved as a dinner party. Often a tea party can be the answer to friends just getting together. It’s an ideal format for a simple elegant party where the food is prepared before your guests arrive and is either presented buffet style, or by passing plates of goodies at the table. The best thing about a tea party is that the only thing you need to serve is the tea itself, leaving you plenty of time to relax and enjoy your guests.

There is more in Tea Time With the Cozy Chicks than just tea parties. There are ideas on tea paring, tea towels, antique teapots and cups, reading tea leaves and the book gives favorite tearooms that we’ve discovered. These are tearooms that Duffy Brown came across in Savannah and on Mackinac Island. These tearooms are filled with charm and delicious tea, pastries and delicious sandwiches and are just for you here and not included in the book.

cozy wednesday 2013 640Welcome to Cozy Wednesday!

I was super excited Duffy Brown was going to be my guest today, but we are so lucky she sent Walker Boone in her place  – while she takes a spin in his car!!
If you recall my review of Dead Man Walker I was very excited about this new book.

Hi, it’s Walker Boone here. There’s a dead guy in the bathtub, my gun’s responsible for the dead part and I don’t know how to get out of this mess.

duffyThe thing is I didn’t kill the guy and until I can find out who did, I’m on the run. It’s not as easy as you might think. This is Savannah and everyone knows me. I’m that lawyer guy who dives the ’57 red Chevy convertible. It’s a given I can’t use that as a get-away car so I switched it for a pink scooter. No ones going to look for me in a pink scooter…right?

Now where to hide is the problem. I can’t leave town. If I do that I’ll never find the killer and I’ll be on the run for the rest of my life. I don’t want to be on the run, I want to stay in Savannah.

I’m a Southern boy, I like it here, it’s home. I have a house, and a law practice, a dog named Bruce Willis and I have a girl, a special girl. And that’s where things get even trickier.

It’s been a little rocky between us since I represented her ex in their divorce a few years back and sort of took her to the cleaners in the settlement. In my own defense she’s the one who signed the prenup that made the cleaners part pretty darn easy.

But since then our paths kept crossing. I know her mom, her aunt, Bruce Willis–our shared rescued pup—thinks I’m a good guy and then there are the dead bodies that keep popping up. Hard to imagine forming a relationship over a corpse but that’s how it is. We’re usually trying to find the killer sometimes together, other times not so much.
Reagan…that’s her name, Reagan Summerside…has her ways of doing things and I have mine. Mine are a little more calculated and thought out. Hers are mostly dumb luck that puts her in the right place at the wrong time.

We’ve gotten close, closer than I’ve ever been to anyone. Why did I have to figure this out now of all times when things are so uncertain? Why not before?

Well there you have it. I’m a guy on the lam and a guy in love and I don’t know how to fix either one. Wish me luck and maybe give me some advice on how to let Reagan,…this very special girl in my life…know I care about her when I can’t even let her know where I am.

It’s springtime in Savannah, Georgia, in the newest Consignment Shop Mystery from the national bestselling author of Pearls and Poison. The azaleas and magnolias are in bloom—and Walker Boone is on the run. . .

When Reagan Summerside turned the first floor of her old Victorian home into a consignment shop, she never imagined she’d be harboring a fugitive in her attic. But after a dead man is found in a bathtub and local lawyer Walker Boone is accused of doing the dirty deed, she suddenly has a new house guest.

Having the lawyer who took her to the cleaners in her divorce settlement—and who has been getting under her skin ever since—in close proximity is enough to drive Reagan to distraction. For the sake of her sanity—and Walker’s freedom—they need to put their heads together to find out who is trying to get the lawyer out of the picture . . .

Dollycas’s Thoughts

I couldn’t wait to read this story and Duffy Brown does not disappoint. The blurb above does give away something that was unknown by Reagan way past the middle of the book and I am glad I didn’t read it until after I finished the book.

I love these characters. As Reagan and Boone’s relationship continues to evolve I love them even more! They make me laugh, they made me cry, but I am just more emotional these days. The high jinx in this installment were absolutely stellar, but Boone’s poor car!!!

The plot has its edge of the seat moments and enough twists to leave you absolutely dizzy. I was so wrong about the real bathtub killer and I changed my mind more than once. That is what makes stories like this so much fun to read.

I love the way this author writes. Again the dialogue sings and includes the “Cher-isms” I look forward to. The story is also full of Southern charm even though a couple of characters are not very polite to Reagan, bless their hearts, let me pull that knife out that you just stuck in her back. But she doesn’t let it get her down, she gets up, brushes herself off and starts in a new direction.

This the best book in this series so far as Duffy Brown continues to top herself. Another marvelous mystery featuring fantastic characters that will leaving you shouting for more! Both Cher and the real Bruce Willis would agree. Hmmm does Bruce Willis know about his loveable four legged namesake….

special guest blueDuffy Brown is my Very Special Guest Today!
Dead Man Walker was released on Tuesday!

duffy brownHi, all. Dead Man Walker was out on Tuesday. It’s the fourth book in my Consignment Shop Mysteries and it’s Walker Boone’s story meaning it’s from his point of view and starts off…

“See, there he is, Mr. Boone,” Mercedes said to me. “Just like I told you on the phone, Conway Adkins dead as a fence post in his very own claw-foot bathtub and naked as the day he was born.”

“I take you added the washcloth?” I said to Mercedes, both of us standing in the doorway and staring at the corpse.

“Couldn’t be having the man laying there with his shrivelness all exposed to the world now could I. Not proper for a man his age.”

“Or for the rest of us,” I added.

dead man walkerA guy’s point of view, especially a hunky dude like Walker Boone is way different than writing in the female point of view. Guys don’t think about the color of their purse. They don’t do lunch or get over a problem with retail therapy…namely shopping for shoes. They don’t go out for ice cream when they’re down, they don’t mainline chocolate or eat peanut butter out of the jar…not that I would ever do such a thing.

Guys meet with their buds at the local watering hole and down a few or maybe they shoot pool or shoot hoops. Or they get bar grub or ribs or wings. Wings are always a guy pleaser.

I love guy friendships. Sherlock and Watson, Chandler and Joey on Friends, Fred Flinstone and Barney Rubble, Bert and Ernie, Batman and Robin…you get the picture.

Walker has Big Joey…

“Dawg,” Big Joey said to me as I slip onto a stool next to his, everyone in the place giving Joey space. “Know you’d show.”
Big Joey was built like a Mac truck,
muscles buffed to jet black, gold tooth,
pony tail and main man of the Seventeenth
Street gang…my former home and forever
family. He was my brother in every sense of
the word except parental commonality.

Of course Walker Boone has other friendships, girl friendships like with Reagan. The two started off rocky in that Walker represented Reagan’s ex in her divorce but in solving mysteries they kept tripping over each other. At the end of Dead Man Walker, Walker’s on the run and Reagan and Bruce Willis…the other Bruce Willis…is there to help him out…

“This is circumstantial evidence,” I said to Reagan as we stood on the sidewalk outside my house. “The police have to see that someone’s setting me up to cover their own butt.”

“It’s your butt that needs covering, Walker Boone,” Reagan offered. “The police found your .38 and it matches the bullet that killed Conway. The cops are on their way. You got to get out of here right now.”

I looked at my red ‘57 Chevy convertible parked at the curb. “Might as well put a target on my back driving this thing.”

Reagan shoved her helmet at me. “Take Princess.”

“A scooter? You want me to ride a pink scooter named Princess?”

“Better than that being your nickname in the big house.”

This is Walker Boone’s story, his friendships the people and pets in his life that help him out no matter what.

So what about you? If you were in a tough spot like Walker who would help you out? Who would cover for you and lend you their pink scooter to get away? Who is your Big Joey or Reagan Summerside?

It’s springtime in Savannah, the azaleas and magnolias are in bloom, and Reagan Summerside’s consignment shop, the Prissy Fox, is bustling with customers out to enjoy the beautiful weather. On a day like today, what could go wrong?

As a mortician beautician and housekeeper, Mercedes is no stranger to corpses or messy bathrooms. But the last thing she expects to find in a client’s bathtub is a dead body! Now she’s a murder suspect and it seems like her life is going down the drain. She turns to local lawyer Walker Boone to get her out of hot water.

But Walker has his own surprising connections to the dead man in the tub, and now he needs Reagan’s help to clear his own name—and keep him alive…

Includes a preview of the Consignment Shop Mystery, Demise in Denim.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

I have seen this listed as Book 3.5 and Book 4 depending which site you’re on. What I call it is a prequel to Book 4, or teaser, or torture!! It is so good! but man Duffy and Berkley! this is so hard! Demise in Denim comes out April 7 and I am virtually standing here tapping my foot waiting for that day to arrive.

I absolutely llloooovvvvvveeeee these characters and look forward to visiting them so much. This time Walker has himself in a bathtub load of trouble and Reagan is doing everything she can to get him out of it. But she may land herself in trouble right along with him!

What really makes the book fun was that it is told Walker’s point of view instead of Reagan’s. He sees things like a man which as women know is totally and completely different. They seem to find unusual things of great importance and twist things more to their own advantage…right? It had to be very interesting for Duffy to write.

As you can see this story is really a novella and believe me it ends much too soon but I know Duffy will reward our patience tenfold but my foot is still tapping 🙂 I highly recommend you grab a copy of this very fast read with this warning – be prepared to laugh out loud and get ready to join me impatiently waiting for Demise in Denim. We may need to start a support group.

Small Town or City Slicker?

In Geared for the Grave Evie Bloomfield wants to boost her chances for a promotion so she agrees to leave Chicago and head off to Mackinac Island to help her boss’ dad with his cycle shop.

GearedMackinac is a reaMackinac 3l island, an eight-mile chunk of land where Lake Michigan meets Lake Huron. It’s truly beautiful, no cars with horses and bikes a twenty-minute ferry ride from the mainland. When the lakes freeze…or as the islanders call it “the ice makes…there is no ferry, very limited plane service and if the ice is think enough snowmobiles are the way off the place.

So could you live here year-round?

lilac 4Without cars it’s so quiet and the whole island is a throwback to the 1800s with vintage baseball, parades for every occasion like the Lilac Festival, Horse Festival, Fudge Festival etc. There’s the town gazebo for live music, dressing for dinner at the Grand Hotel, high tea, horse drawn carriages with men in top hats and formal attire and did I mention the no cars thing?

Mackinac hotelMackinac is waking up to the clip clop of horses’ hooves on cobblestone and often the whole island cocooned in dense fog with the foghorns moaning out in the harbor. You’ll be in the best shape of you life with having to walk everywhere and the sunset over the Mackinaw Bridge will always take your breath away.

Mackinac 6This sound amazing to many of us like and like a death sentence to others. There is no mall! There is no Walmart, big box store of any sort, no free wifi except at Horn’s bar and the library. Often your cell phone won’t work and you’ll be hanging over the end of the pier to get reception for the so important phone call. There are only 500 permanent residents so things get a bit confining in the winter when the way to get around is your snowmobile. Your kids go to a school with sixty other kids…just sixty…and there is no Dollar Store. And it’s reeeeeally cold.

There are bicycles and horses everywhere, festivals galore like the Lilac Festival, Fudge Festival, Jazz, Horse etc. They are all fun and everyone turns out to watch. Brings the whole island together.

So what do you think? Are you a island person or a big city guy or gal? Personally I think I’d fit in perfectly on Mackinac Island. It’s a writer’s heaven and I’ve always wanted my own a snowmobile.

Hugs,
Duffy Brown

Mackinac Island is a peaceful summer resort town where everyone coasts through the streets on bicycles. But after someone sends a prominent local on her final ride, it’s up to one resourceful visitor to get things running again…

Hoping to shift her chances of a promotion in her favor, Evie Bloomfield heads to Mackinac Island to assist her boss’s father. Rudy Randolph has broken his leg and operating his bike shop, Rudy’s Rides, is too much to handle by himself. But Evie’s good turn only leads to more trouble…

After Evie’s arrival, wealthy resident Bunny Harrington dies in what looks like a freak bike accident. Upon closer inspection, Bunny’s brakes were tampered with, and now the prime suspect in her murder is also Bunny’s number one enemy: Rudy. So if Evie hopes to stay on her boss’s good side, she’ll need to steer Rudy clear of jail. Now she must quickly solve this mystery so she can put the brakes on the real killer’s plan…

Dollycas’s Thoughts

I knew Evie was in trouble the minute she got off the ferry and requested a taxi. Seems her boss failed to tell her about all the charm of Mackinac Island, like there are no motor vehicles allowed. From there she gets into every kind of trouble possible including finding Bunny Harrington’s dead body. What looks like a freak bicycle accident is soon ruled a homicide and her boss’s father is the number one suspect.

Evie is a delightful character with her heart in the right place. Yes she came to island to garner favor from her boss in hopes of a promotion but once she meets Rudy and the other residents she is just trying to do the right thing. That isn’t easy because as a “fudgie” she seems to get blamed for everything the goes wrong. I really like the way she used her creativity to breathe new life into Rudy’s Rides all while she is doing her best to keep him out of jail and trying to nudge temporary police chief Nate Sutter in the direction of many other suspects.

Clever characters abound in the new series. In addition to Evie and Rudy we meet Evie’s mother who makes an unexpected trip to Mackinac Island and meets a handsome gentleman with a questionable background. We also meet a man the locals call Jason Bourne because he is a master of disguise and always has briefcase handcuffed to his wrist. Everyone is convinced he is a hit man but I figured out is real occupation quite quickly. You also have Speedy and Huffy, these are people, not pets. They both want Rudy to be guilty so they can add his bike business to their own. They are also high on Evie’s suspect list.

Mackinac Island is a wonderful place to set a mystery series but it is also the setting of another cozy mystery series written by Nancy Coco. Both authors draw on actual events to include in their stories and the Island is a pretty small place. I half expected the protagonist Allie from that series to run into Evie somewhere along the way.

Duffy Brown does give the reader a great mystery to follow and I was totally surprised by the way this one played out. The plot takes some wacky turns and that keeps the pages turning. There is also quite a bit of humor laced throughout the entire story. From Evie’s rash to where they keep the dead body on ice until after the tourists leave and all the little phrases the locals use to keep the “fudgies” in the dark all had me “tee heeing” from the beginning to the end.

This series is off to a wonderful start. -Braking for Bodies  is coming in 2015 and -Tandem Demise will follow in 2016. I predict a lot of fun  and drama for Evie ahead!

Sleuthing and the BFF…
By Duffy Brown

It’s that dark and stormy night we hear so much about, your car just broke down in the middle of nowhere and you forgot to recharge your cell phone. In the moonlight you see an old dilapidated farmhouse off in the distance.

The question is… Who’s walking to that farmhouse with you?

P&PSherlock has Watson with him, Perot  has Captain Hastings, Nancy Drew has  boyfriend Ned, Stephanie Plum has Lula. Some sleuths even have a cat or dog. Sometimes they even talk. I wish my cats talked. Actually I wished they did the laundry and vacuumed but I digress.

Every sleuth has a BFF to chat with, get into trouble with, drink with.

On TV Beckett has Rick Castle. The SCI people have each other kicking around and Lizbeth has tea-drinking Patrick Jane in the Mentalist.

It’s not just solving the crimes together that makes them BFFs, but sharing their personal lives. IMO it’s this personal touch that’s the most interesting part of the show or book. Don’t you love when Sherlock does something nice for Watson or Perot and Hastings travel and take on the chase together or when Becket and Castle turn to each other and say I know who the killer is!

That LuLa is a once-upon-a-time hooker makes for a great character, that Patrick Jane is hunting for Red John keeps us riveted, that Rick Castle is has a grown daughter and a boyfriend who is nothing like Rick and has his mother is living with him gives a human touch to finding killers and tripping over dead bodies.

In my book the Consignment Shop Mysteries protagonist Reagan has BFF Auntie KiKi. KiKi was once a roadie for Cher and spouts Cher-isms when giving sage advice like A girl can wait for the right man to come along but in the meantime she can have a darn good time with all the wrong ones.  When KiKi was born the angels chanted cha-cha-cha over her crib and turned her into Savannah’s resident dancing teacher, when Reagan’s mom was born she was wrapped in a blanket with pink elephants resulting in Reagan being named Reagan.

In Pearls and Poison, Reagan’s mom is running for city council and her opponent winds up dead…that’s one way to win an election. Daughter Reagan and Auntie KiKi run to the rescue to find the real killer discussing suspects over martinis.

Back to our dark and stormy night. We know who our sleuths have at their sides when going into that creepy old house. So who would you have tagging along. Who is at one person that when you show up at their house with a dead body grabs a shovel and doesn’t ask questions.

When life goes right to hell in a hand-basket, who do what at your side?

~Duffy

It’s election time in Savannah, Georgia, and Judge Guillotine Gloria—aka Reagan Summerside’s mom—is neck and neck in the polls with Kip “Scummy” Seymour. But the already dirty campaign is about to get downright filthy—with one candidate getting buried six feet under…

With her strong opinions and knack for getting into trouble, Reagan is not an ideal volunteer for her mother’s alderman campaign. Plus, she’d rather be running her consignment shop, the Prissy Fox, and eating doughnuts with her dog, Bruce Willis. But when her mother’s opponent, Kip, is found poisoned and her mother is pegged as a suspect, Reagan nominates herself as lead murder investigator.

Reagan is intent on finding Kip’s killer and clearing her mother’s good name, but she soon finds herself on the bad side of Kip’s enemies-turned-suspects. This time, no amount of costumes and makeup can keep her inconspicuous and out of danger. Because the closer Reagan gets to the truth, the hotter things get…

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Another winner from Duffy Brown!!

These are some of the best cozy characters out there today. Reagan and Aunt Kiki are pure treasures.  Boone continues to grow on me and he is starting to grow on Reagan as well. Judge Gloria was a little more mellow this time but then she was the prime murder suspect so she was “watching her  p’s and q’s”, except she was “helping” at the Consignment Shop. Reagan exercised extreme patience with her mother.  I don’t know how she did it 🙂

While this story is full of Southern charm it is the dialogue that makes this story stand out. When these characters communicate the reader can almost hear the words like they are right there in the Prissy Fox or running around with Reagan chasing down clues and ducking danger.

The political plot worked really well except I wouldn’t ever expect a judge to want to be an alderperson, but maybe that is the way things work in Georgia. Dirty politics is always a great jump off for mysteries and this one had plenty of twists to keep us guessing.

Great characters, wonderful setting, a believable plot, southern charm, sassy dialogue and humor all add up to make this one fine cozy.

cozy wednesdayWelcome to Cozy Wednesday!

After 2 weeks of tote bag giveaways I am thrilled to welcome Reagan Summerside,
owner of the Prissy Fox, to Escape With Dollycas!

Killer in Crinolines (A Consignment Shop Mystery) hit shelves yesterday and it is another winner.

martiniHi! Reagan Summerside here to talk weddings. The good, the bad and the deadly…310591_364948580242585_1566440493_n may

You know that old saying, always the bridesmaid never the bride, well I’ve been both. The bride part didn’t take proven by the fact that I caught Hollis, my husband and the hound of Savannah, doing the horizontal hula with Cupcake right there in his office. That was some staff meeting, all right.

The last wedding I attended I came to deliver a bow-tie to the groom as he misplaced his. The good part of that wedding was the cake was delicious. The deadly part was that the groom wound up dead in five tiers of icing and fondant, the ugly part was that my BFF, Chantilly, the groom’s ex got accused of the murder.

Round tables decked out in peach-tone wedding linens with white flower arrangements of roses and forget-me-nots dotted the room and Doreen-the-wedding-planner lay crumbled in a heap on the floor.

teaparty5_-_web_1_1_thumb“Oh dear Lord!” I starting for Doreen but stopped in my tracks because Simon was there too. He was face down in his very own five-tiered wedding cake with a silver cake knife sticking out of his back.

wedding 1Chantilly shouldn’t have been at the wedding in the first place of course but she and her UPS truck just sort of wound up there.

“You shouldn’t be here,” I said to Chantilly as she swiveled round in the driver’s seat of her UPS van. White icing and cake crumbs smeared her lips and a glob of raspberry filling dripped down her chin. A pink butter cream rose stuck to the front of her brown uniform blouse. “Dear God in heaven! You went and ate the wedding cake!”

“One slice,” she mumbled around a mouthful. “Who’s going to miss one little old slice? The freaking thing is five tiers high. It took three Cakery Bakery employees and the owner Delta Longford herself to lug it in. They even made GracieAnn Harlow stand on a ladder to get the bride and groom thing on top.”

Chantilly held up a chunk of mangled pastry. “This here should be my wedding cake, except for the pink roses. This should be my wedding day, my wedding colors of creamy-peach and blue-morning-rain. Simon is my man. We were engaged! How could he marry someone else!” Chantilly wailed, a tear sliding down her cheek and cutting a path across a white icing smear.

Hopefully none of the weddings you’ve attended were like this one with the groom dead as Lincoln right there in his own cake.

What do you think is the best part of a wedding? The cake? The first dance? The saying I Do?

Let me know and I’ll give away two Killer in Crinoline tote bags from the answers.

Hugs, Reagan

It’s August in Savannah, Georgia—hardly the season for a traditional Southern wedding with hoopskirts and crinolines. One could die from the heat—or from a cake knife in the back…

Reagan Summerside should be devoting all her energy to her consignment shop the Prissy Fox. But when her dear friend Chantilly Parker is arrested for murder, Reagan vows to clear her name. The victim is Simon Ambrose, who’s found lying in his own wedding cake with a knife in his back.

Chantilly has motive (Simon broke her heart to marry wealthy Waynetta Waverly) and opportunity (crashing the wedding in her UPS delivery truck). And she has cake on her face, and the stolen bridesmaid dress the killer wore is in her truck. But Chantilly would never wear crinoline to kill a man!

With the help of her flamboyant auntie, KiKi, and vexing but attractive attorney Walker Boone, Reagan is determined to save her friend—before she’s forced to turn in her brown uniform for an orange jumpsuit…

Dollycas’s Thoughts
August is hot in Savannah, Georgia and the perfect temperature for MURDER!!! Duffy Brown has topped herself with the sequel to Iced Chiffon.

All of favorite characters are back and will have your sides hurting from laughter. From Aunt Kiki’s Cher quotes like “Men aren’t necessities, they are luxuries” to Chantilly’s misguided reasoning and Reagan’s adventures taking over Chantilly’s parcel deliveries, this book is plum full of Southern charm and humor. Can anyone have worse luck than Reagan? Wherever she goes trouble follows close behind.

Walker Boone is starting grow on me and Bruce Willis has stolen my heart. But Waynetta Waverly, the bride to be, brings the drama to the story. Shouldn’t she be more upset over the death of her groom?

This was such a fun story but be prepared once you start reading you will not be able to stop. I was so caught up in the story I missed supper 🙂

Pour yourself a sweet tea or martini,  find a comfy chair and sit back and enjoy the mystery, humor and a dash of romance that fill these pages. A perfect escape!

Welcome to Cozy Wednesday!

I hope you have enjoyed the weekly Iced Chiffon giveaways. Jeanine E.  is the Week #9 Winner!! I couldn’t wait to get my own copy in my hands. It was fun to get to know a bit about the characters in advance. I also think I need to shop in more stores like Reagan’s . I wonder if I could find some wonderful treasures too! The book itself is a treasure!!

I am so happy that Duffy is here today! The series takes place in Savannah, Georgia. That city is full of treasures. Duffy is going to tell us about a few. Please help me welcome her to Escape With Dollycas today!!

Hi Duffy!

Hi Everyone!

Southern Food

I love Savannah, visit there a lot of times and did a ton of research on the place when I wrote Iced Chiffon. Things like what streets are one way, how many squares are there, and is the Pirate House really haunted?

One of the things I love researching the most is the food! Eating my way across Savannah is a delicious, lip-smacking, calorie-overload adventure.  Is there anything more delicious than Southern cooking?

You can have your sushi and broiled skinless/boneless chicken breast but give me a good old pork something-or-other anytime. I read somewhere that there are two religions down South…Baptist and Barbecue.  This is where the pork comes in, a cookout over a hardwood fire. Pulled, shredded, chopped, diced or sliced, it’s all pure heaven.

Then there’re the pies. Lord have mercy, pies! My Kentucky mother in-law taught me to make crust that crumbles if you look at it sideways. And the filling… I have a pecan pie recipe that makes grown men cry, a peach cobbler recipe bequeathed to my eldest daughter and a sweet potato pie recipe that Paula Deen’s broken into my house twice now trying to swipe.

Some of my friends just don’t get it. North food, South food, what’s the difference? Lots! Here’s a list and you tell me if it’s on a Northern grocery list or a Southern one. First off there’s the grocery itself…just try and find a Winn Dixie or Piggly-Wiggly in New Jersey.

Bagels or hush puppies, granola bars or bread pudding, soft pretzels or jambalaya, baguette or grits, penne or grits, 12-inch Italian sausage or grits.  You get the idea.

So what about you? What is your favorite Southern dish? Is there one passed down in the family or one you found in an old Southern Living magazine in your doctor’s office? Share the good food! I’ll give away three Iced Chiffon totes from the answers. Yummmmm!

Iced Chiffon

Reagan’s messy divorce has left her with nothing but fixer upper Victorian home and a bunch of designer clothes.  She needs to make a living so she turns her first floor into a consignment shop and starts out selling her own wardrobe. She starts to think things may turn out o.k. until she borrows her ex’s Lexus and finds his new girlfriend dead in the trunk. Of course her ex is the prime suspect and expects Reagan to sell the house to pay his attorney, Walker Boone. Reagan decides to find the murderer herself before Boone to keep the attorney’s costs to the bare minimum. Turns out her customers give her much more than their old clothes to sell. “They have information more precious than a vintage Louis Vuitton” that can help her solve the case and save her house.

Dollycas’s Thoughts
This is a fantastic debut!!

It is outrageously funny with larger than life characters.

Reagan has the worse possible luck and she gets herself in situations that reminded me of Lucille Ball in I Love Lucy. The very best intentions always seem to just go wrong.

Aunt Kiki is Reagan’s perfect cohort in this crazy investigation. Aunt Kiki was a roadie on one of Cher’s tours and at times I believe she still thinks she is on tour and Cher is her best friend. For example: Cher says “If you really want something, you can figure out how to make it happen.”  While Cher wasn’t an actual character, Kiki quotes her often, so much you almost think she may appear right there is Savannah. Maybe in a future story 🙂

Elsie and AnnieFritz are a hoot, think Mrs. Kravitz from the old Bewitched television show. They just have to know everyone’s business and what they don’t hear around the neighborhood they pick up at funerals. Elsie and AnnieFritz are professional mourners.

At times I thought Walker Boone was sweet but then I just wanted to slap him. The jury is still out on him for me.

How could I not fall for a pup named Bruce Willis? They perfect pet for Reagan as long as she keeps his favorite treats handy.

I hope the author sent a copy of this book to Cher and another to Bruce Willis. I know they would both enjoy the way their personas were used in this story!

I don’t know exactly why but this story reminded me of the old sitcoms I liked to watch but in a modern day setting. Maybe Hollywood should be scoping out the current cozy mysteries for new sitcom ideas.

This story truly is a perfect escape, I loved it! I didn’t want to leave Savannah. I guess I will just have to wait for the next installment. Write fast Duffy!!!
