#Review – Home by Harlan Coben

I have been waiting for this book! No matter what I am doing when I get my hands on a Harlan Coben novel time stops and I must read it immediately. When the story features Myron Bolitar I am even more excited! I originally picked up Deal Breaker, the first book in the series at Paperback Swap  several years ago for my husband to read, but was so intrigued by the synopsis I read it myself first and then hunted the rest down to get caught up on the series. When I started blogging I tried desperately to get his books to review. As my following grew I received that first email offering me one of books to review I was absolutely chair dancing. Then he re-tweeted one of my tweets about a review I wrote and was jumping up and down as much as a woman with one side paralyzed can do. Yes, I am a fan, A HUGE FAN! Heaven forbid I ever actually meet him in person!

Ten years after the high-profile kidnapping of two young boys, only one returns home in Harlan Coben’s gripping thriller.

A decade ago, kidnappers grabbed two boys from wealthy families and demanded ransom, then went silent. No trace of the boys ever surfaced. For ten years their families have been left with nothing but painful memories and a quiet desperation for the day that has finally, miraculously arrived: Myron Bolitar and his friend Win believe they have located one of the boys, now a teenager. Where has he been for ten years, and what does he know about the day, more than half a life ago, when he was taken? And most critically: What can he tell Myron and Win about the fate of his missing friend? Drawing on his singular talent, Harlan Coben delivers an explosive and deeply moving thriller about friendship, family, and the meaning of home.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

First let me state this book can easily read as a stand-a-lone, but the main characters have a history and after reading this book you will want to know that history.

The story starts with Myron getting a call from Win. Ten years ago two boys went missing and for Win it is personal because one of the boys was family. After all this time Win receives information that puts him back on the trail and he needs Myron’s help. These two are like the dynamic duo only while Myron is the star of these books he is more often Robin to Win’s Batman.

While Myron does make appearances in Coben’s young adult series, Live Wire, the last Myron Bolitar thriller was published in 2011, so at first I was worried first about my memory of everything Bolitar but also if during the years away the characters wouldn’t live up to my hopes.  Coben has written some stellar thrillers since we last visited these characters so the bar was set really high. Well, I need not have worried, my memories picked up like I has read the previous book the day before  and Coben hits this one out of the park!

Myron, Win (Windsor Lockhorne III), Esperanza and Big Cindi are all back. Mickey, Myron’s nephew and his girlfriend and friend Spoon (Young Adult Series) along with Myron’s parents are all involved in this book. We meet more of Win’s family and the other missing boy’s family too. Plus the criminals who play a part in this story. They are all vital and spring from the pages.

The entire plot starts and ends with gripping and astounding twists, exactly what I expect from this author. The story has tons of drama, action, and mystery along with several edge of your seat moments. Family interactions and deep psychological matters are revealed that had me absolutely stunned. There are some moments of humor too that fans of Myron and Win will truly appreciate. These two are a pair like no other.

The pace is so fast. I wanted to savor this story I had been waiting so long for but with points of view continually switching between Myron and Win that was impossible.  I did the just one more chapter thing so many times I just gave up and stayed up and finished the whole thing and again at the end I exclaimed “WOW!” His books tend to have that effect on me.

In recent years my reading has been more on the cozy side but if I had to choose my all time favorite author my answer has been and will be Harlan Coben. His writing grabs me by the collar and doesn’t let go. I anxiously await each new book. As I finished this one I thought is this the last Bolitar novel? The characters seem to be in a good place so it could be but I sure hope it is not. I do know that whatever this author writes I am going to want to read it immediately so I can’t wait to see where he takes me next.

Review – Fool Me Once by Harlan Coben

While by favorite genre is Cozy Mysteries I do also like a good suspense thriller. Harlan Coben is my all time favorite thriller author. When he has a new book come out the world just stops and I escape deep inside the story. I was blessed to receive an advance copy for review. I am thrilled to tell you all about it so you can grab it on March 22 when it is released.

Former special ops pilot Maya, home from the war, sees an unthinkable image captured by her nanny cam while she is at work: her two-year-old daughter playing with Maya’s husband, Joe—who had been brutally murdered two weeks earlier. The provocative question at the heart of the mystery: Can you believe everything you see with your own eyes, even when you desperately want to? To find the answer, Maya must finally come to terms with deep secrets and deceit in her own past before she can face the unbelievable truth about her husband—and herself.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

I have a new FAVORITE COBEN!! Fool Me Once has edged out Caught. This story is absolutely brilliant!!

Maya flew helicopters overseas in Iraq but she has left the military after a mission goes way wrong. Home with her husband Joe and her daughter Lily, she is suffering from the mental effects of war and dealing with her sister’s death a few months before.  She tries to get on with her life but her troubles continue as her husband is viciously murdered. Two weeks later she returns home to find the nanny camera has images of 2 year old Lily playing with her dad. Is he alive? Who did they bury? Why is there so much death around her? Maya starts on a journey to find the truth and what happens with amaze you.

Maya is a very engaging character. She is a super strong woman fighting her demons. Joe and his family have secrets upon secrets and I just can’t tell you more.

Twisted, woven together, plot lines cross and untangle just to mix all together again. Coben is a genius, the story is masterfully written. The reader is drawn into the story and the tension and suspense builds and builds until you get whiplash from the final spin that will leave you breathless. Fool Me Once, Mr. Coben is full tricks. He got me. He got me good! And I positively LOVED IT! This is his best book yet!

New to this author, this is a fantastic one to start with!  Already a fan, get this book as soon as you can!

Review/Giveaway – Christmas Bells by Jennifer Chiaverini

christmas bellsChristmas Bells: A Novel
Dutton (October 27, 2015)
Setting – Massachusetts
An Imprint of Penguin Random House LLC
Hardcover: 336 pages
ISBN-13: 978-0525955245
E-Book ASIN: B00SI02BZ6
goodreads-badge-add-plus

New York Times bestselling author Jennifer Chiaverini celebrates Christmas, past and present, with a wondrous novel inspired by the classic poem “Christmas Bells,” by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.

I heard the bells on Christmas Day/ Their old familiar carols play/ And wild and sweet/ The words repeat/Of peace on earth, good-will to men!

In 1860, the Henry Wadsworth Longfellow family celebrated Christmas at Craigie House, their home in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The publication of Longfellow’s classic Revolutionary War poem, “Paul Revere’s Ride,” was less than a month hence, and the country’s grave political unrest weighed heavily on his mind. Yet with his beloved wife, Fanny, and their five adored children at his side, the delights of the season prevailed.

In present-day Boston, a dedicated teacher in the Watertown public school system is stunned by somber holiday tidings. Sophia’s music program has been sacrificed to budget cuts, and she worries not only about her impending unemployment but also about the consequences to her underprivileged students. At the church where she volunteers as music director, Sophia tries to forget her cares as she leads the children’s choir in rehearsal for a Christmas Eve concert. Inspired to honor a local artist, Sophia has chosen a carol set to a poem by Longfellow, moved by the glorious words he penned one Christmas Day long ago, even as he suffered great loss.

Christmas Bells chronicles the events of 1863, when the peace and contentment of Longfellow’s family circle was suddenly, tragically broken, cutting even deeper than the privations of wartime. Through the pain of profound loss and hardship, Longfellow’s patriotism never failed, nor did the power of his language. “Christmas Bells,” the poem he wrote that holiday, lives on, spoken as verse and sung as a hymn.

Jennifer Chiaverini’s resonant and heartfelt novel for the season reminds us why we must continue to hear glad tidings, even as we are tested by strife. Reading Christmas Bells evokes the resplendent joy of a chorus of voices raised in reverent song.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

There are two stories in this book. One set in present time and the other in 1863. They are tied together by Longfellow poem Christmas Bells. The book alternates chapters going back and forth between the two stories.

The main story tells the reader about Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and his family before and through the civil war. As always Jennifer Chiaverini has researched his life and bought us a wonderful story and presented a slice of history in a very enjoyable way. His love for his family and the heartbreak he suffers leaps off the pages. His wonderful poems are given new life. That new life shines in the second story.

The present day story introduces us to Sophia, a schoolteacher whose music program is being slashed by budget cuts. Something that is happening all across the United States. Sophia is also the music director at her church. She is featuring the carol “I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day” based on Longfellow poem for the church’s Christmas service. This story takes place in a short period of time and each chapter is told from a different person’s point of view. This story was entertaining as well. Because parts of the story overlapped there was quite a bit a repetition. I found myself skimming those parts and wish the author had found another way to present this story. The characters were very engaging and I would have liked a broader story about them.

Chiaverini has added another wonderful book to her repertoire. Perfect for the holiday season.

Review/Giveaway – Let Me Die in His Footsteps by Lori Roy

Historical Mystery
Setting – Kentucky

In the spellbinding and suspenseful Let Me Die in His Footsteps, Edgar Award–winner Lori Roy wrests from a Southern town the secrets of two families touched by an evil that has passed between generations.

On a dark Kentucky night in 1952 exactly halfway between her fifteenth and sixteenth birthdays, Annie Holleran crosses into forbidden territory. Everyone knows Hollerans don’t go near Baines, not since Joseph Carl was buried two decades before, but, armed with a silver-handled flashlight, Annie runs through her family’s lavender fields toward the well on the Baines’ place. At the stroke of midnight, she gazes into the water in search of her future. Not finding what she had hoped for, she turns from the well and when the body she sees there in the moonlight is discovered come morning, Annie will have much to explain and a past to account for.

It was 1936, and there were seven Baine boys. That year, Annie’s aunt, Juna Crowley, with her black eyes and her long blond hair, came of age. Before Juna, Joseph Carl had been the best of all the Baine brothers. But then he looked into Juna’s eyes and they made him do things that cost innocent people their lives. Sheriff Irlene Fulkerson saw justice served—or did she?

As the lavender harvest approaches and she comes of age as Aunt Juna did in her own time, Annie’s dread mounts. Juna will come home now, to finish what she started. If Annie is to save herself, her family, and this small Kentucky town, she must prepare for Juna’s return, and the revelation of what really happened all those years ago.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

I was so excited to read this but I almost stopped reading it within the first few pages. An event takes place that after what I went through losing my son in March I was unsure if I was going to be able to handle it. After a few deep breaths and some tears I decided to keep going. I am glad I did. This is a very compelling story. I skimmed parts that hit too close but that didn’t take anything away from the story.

The book goes back and forth from Sarah and Juna’s story in 1936 and Annie’s story in 1952.  This is a family full of secrets and though separated by many years they secrets are still relevant and unnerving as we find out what the truth really is.

Like Lori Roy’s Bent Road that I reviewed back in 2012 this is a book about family relationships and struggles.  I am walking a fine line here not wanting to give too much away. Back in the 30’s the family’s crop was tobacco, in the 50’s it is lavender. (Isn’t the cover beautiful.) Life has never been easy for this family, some people say they are cursed. The Baines and the Cowley’s have a history and when Annie ventures on Baine land the past comes back and eerie things are brought to light.

Roy has written quite a story and creating some flawed and fascinating characters. A few characters in both time periods are believed to have the “know-how” or the ability to know something is about to happen. This is a very dark read and full of tragedy. The author tells the story and she doesn’t pull any punches. Her style is very descriptive. There are a few twists and I started to see where the story could end up but I was only partly right.

A would call this book beautifully haunting, a bit chilling. It has stayed with me since I finished it.
