The Stranger appears out of nowhere, perhaps in a bar, or a parking lot, or at the grocery store. His identity is unknown. His motives are unclear. His information is undeniable. Then he whispers a few words in your ear and disappears, leaving you picking up the pieces of your shattered world.

Adam Price has a lot to lose: a comfortable marriage to a beautiful woman, two wonderful sons, and all the trappings of the American Dream: a big house, a good job, a seemingly perfect life.

Then he runs into the Stranger. When he learns a devastating secret about his wife, Corinne, he confronts her, and the mirage of perfection disappears as if it never existed at all. Soon Adam finds himself tangled in something far darker than even Corinne’s deception, and realizes that if he doesn’t make exactly the right moves, the conspiracy he’s stumbled into will not only ruin lives—it will end them.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

I get so excited when a new Harlan Coben thriller is about to be released. I drop everything and read it as soon as it arrives. This one had a very different feel right from the start but like all of his other books I started reading and just couldn’t stop. I had to break it up over 2 evenings because my eyes just wouldn’t stay open but if my body had let me I would have finished the whole thing all in one sitting.

“The Stranger” visits normal everyday people that could have been me or my friends or neighbors. Anyone who is affected by a secret someone close to us is keeping. Adam’s wife, Corinne, had a secret and after the stranger reveals it to him his life is never going to be the same. The stranger also visits other throughout the story with secrets too, changing their lives.

What appeared to be a pretty straight forward story quickly twists and turns. Exactly what I expect from Mr. Coben. I found myself completely enthralled by this story, you may even say mesmerized. At first I thought Corinne’s secret was hurtful but not life shattering. Yes, the couple’s trust had been broken, but I thought a strong marriage would survive it. But the more Adam’s story continued and the plot started to play out I saw the author’s writing style start to shine and draw us in deeper. It is a story that has many layers. This is not you typical nail biting thriller, but more a mystery with thrilling and suspense filled moments.

I have been impressed with every Harlan Coben novel. I can’t say that is my favorite Harlan Coben book, Caught still holds that spot, but frankly all of his stories rate 5 stars to me. They all grab a hold of you and don’t let go. If you a are a new fan or an old fan this book should be on your “Can’t Wait To Read” list!!

Review- Mrs. Grant and Madame Jule by Jennifer Chiaverini

In 1844, Missouri belle Julia Dent met dazzling horseman Lieutenant Ulysses S Grant. Four years passed before their parents permitted them to wed, and the groom’s abolitionist family refused to attend the ceremony.

Since childhood, Julia owned as a slave another Julia, known as Jule. Jule guarded her mistress’s closely held twin secrets: She had perilously poor vision but was gifted with prophetic sight. So it was that Jule became Julia’s eyes to the world.

And what a world it was, marked by gathering clouds of war. The Grants vowed never to be separated, but as Ulysses rose through the ranks—becoming general in chief of the Union Army—so did the stakes of their pact. During the war, Julia would travel, often in the company of Jule and the four Grant children, facing unreliable transportation and certain danger to be at her husband’s side.

Yet Julia and Jule saw two different wars. While Julia spoke out for women—Union and Confederate—she continued to hold Jule as a slave behind Union lines. Upon the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation, Jule claimed her freedom and rose to prominence as a businesswoman in her own right, taking the honorary title Madame. The two women’s paths continued to cross throughout the Grants’ White House years in Washington, DC, and later in New York City, the site of Grant’s Tomb.

Mrs. Grant and Madame Jule is the first novel to chronicle this singular relationship, bound by sight and shadow.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Marriage is a partnership and that theme blooms within the pages of Mrs. Grant and Madame Jule. When Julia Dent met Ulysses S Grant her life changed forever. A whole new world opened to her as he looked beyond her flaws and took her into his life. She followed him around the country as his military career prospered and slowly realized that all women no matter the color of their skin should be equal but it was too late as her maid Jule has run away several years earlier.

The Grant’s life is well chronicled but her maid Jules life in this story was created by the author. I am sure the research for a novel like this is immense. To fictionalize it like this must be very difficult but Chiaverini brings it all together in a way that captures a love story while portraying life at the time of civil war for those embroiled in the battles.

I enjoyed reading Jules part of the story but this was the story of Julia Dent Grant. Another slave, Gabriel, was very important to Jule but he was sold by Julia’s father and he left the pages of the story until the very end of the book. I wish we could have followed his travels as well.

Jennifer Chiaverini has written a few of these Civil War era stories and she covers the people and the battles very well. I totally had a different picture in my head of the type of man Ulysses S Grant was. In this account he was a strong military man but he was also a very strong family man and made sure to spend as much time with his family as possible, even  taking his son with him into battle. We never learn about the people when studying history in school, it is all dates, battles and proclamations.

The story is also relevant today as we still are facing civil right issues so many years later. There are lessons to learn from out past, important lessons. Tolerance, acceptance, respect, forgiveness, working together toward what is good for the many not just a few.

I look forward to more stories like this, shining light on important females in U.S. history.

Cordelia Kane has always been a daddy’s girl—her father raised her alone after her mother died in a car crash when Cordelia was just two years old. So when he has a serious heart attack, Cordelia is devastated, and the emotion is only intensified by the confusion she feels when he reveals the shocking truth about her mother.

Cordelia can’t suppress her curiosity about the woman who gave birth to her, and when she discovers the answers to her questions lie in Sydney, Australia, she travels there to get them.

Hotel magnate Aiden Madison is Cordelia’s best friend’s older brother. He’s oblivious to the fact that she’s had a crush on him for years. When he gets railroaded into taking her along to Sydney on his company jet, he’s unwittingly drawn into a volatile family drama.

Aiden wants to help Cordelia get answers about her mother, but threats from her wealthy, high-powered family are quickly becoming dangerous. Sparks are flying between Cordelia and Aiden, but after multiple attempts are made on Cordelia’s life, Aiden realizes he must put a stop to the madness before he loses the thing he values most.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

I am testing my memory on this story. I believe Aiden and Cordelia’s crush started way back in a previous book. I believe it was Murder List back in 2004 and now 10 years later they come together again.  Aiden was always more of a big brother figure because he was her best friend’s older brother, but she has a huge crush on the guy.  This time they are thrown together due to circumstances beyond their control and her crush is reciprocated in a big way. Now she just has to stay alive and they need to realize they belong together.

The plot of this one was very engaging. After all these years Cordie’s father reveals a secret on his deathbed about her mother.  My heart was breaking for her and she had the courage to uncover the truth even though it put her in mortal danger.

There is also a subplot involving the Madison brothers. Two are very active in the family hotel business and the third brother is more of a playboy who races cars and hooks up with a variety of ladies. An accident has sidelined him and he decides to get involved in a deal his brothers have written off. Spencer and Aiden are not happy about Walker taking on the deal and family drama ensues.  Add this to Cordie’s drama and it makes a helluva story!

Yes, this book is part of the Buchanan / Renard / MacKenna series but what I like it that Julie Garwood writes them so they can each stand alone. Characters have returned from previous books but they are full and fleshed out so that you don’t have to reread or try to remember how everyone got to where they are today. But everyone that I have read has been very entertaining so if you can you should start at the beginning. When writing about family drama, suspense and romance Julie Garwood is one of the best.

I am hoping we don’t have to wait another 10 years to revisit these characters. I would love to Walker have his own adventure soon as he decides whether he wants to concentrate on the family business or on his playboy pleasures.

When single father Danny Goodman suddenly finds himself unable to afford the private school his teenage daughter adores, he has no one to turn to for financial support.

In what seems like a stroke of brilliant luck, Danny meets Thomas Galvin, the father of his daughter’s new best friend, who also happens to be one of the wealthiest men in Boston. Galvin is aware of Danny’s situation and out of the blue offers a $50,000 loan to help Danny cover his daughter’s tuition. Uncomfortable but desperate, Danny takes the money, promising to pay Galvin back.

What transpires is something Danny never imagined. The moment the money is wired into his account, the DEA comes knocking on his door. Danny’s impossible choice: an indictment for accepting drug money that he can’t afford to fight in court, or an unthinkably treacherous undercover assignment helping the government get close to his new family friend.

As Danny begins to lie to everyone in his life, including those he loves most in the world, he must decide once and for all who the real enemy is or risk losing everything—and everyone—that matters to him.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

This is my first book by Joseph Finder but it definitely won’t be my last.  I have wanted to read his books for some time so when NetGalley offered this book I jumped at it.

The author quickly engages the reader into Danny’s life as he stretched to his limits with no help in sight until he meets the father of his daughter’s new best friend. When the man offers him a loan and he accepts things start to careen out of control. I couldn’t have put down this book if I wanted to. The author proceeds to take us on a wild ride without giving us much time to catch our breath. My heart was just pounding as the pages kept turning.

Danny’s relationship with his daughter, Abby, was a struggle in itself. She had lost her mother and feels betrayed that the true story of her mother’s illness was kept from her. Danny tries to keep things as normal as possible including continuing her education as this pricey school. While I felt for Abby I was also disappointed in her. She knew money was tight, yet she tried to pull off the little rich girl persona with her friend Jenna. She spent so much time at Jenna’s and never would think of inviting Jenna to her home as that would bring out her lies.  Her character was really fleshed out but it was really hard to like her and made me feel even more compassion for Danny.

There are some crazy twists in this thriller that really turned the story on its ear. One had me saying “Oh My God”! That being said I can truly understand why Finder’s stories are being made into movies. This story would make a great movie!

If you like the mysteries of Harlan Coben you will love Suspicion. I will be adding the rest of Joseph Finder’s book to my wish list right away!!

From #1 New York Times bestselling author Harlan Coben, a heart-pounding thriller about the ties we have to our past…and the lies that bind us together.

It’s a profile, like all the others on the online dating site. But as NYPD Detective Kat Donovan focuses on the accompanying picture, she feels her whole world explode, as emotions she’s ignored for decades come crashing down on her. Staring back at her is her ex-fiancé Jeff, the man who shattered her heart—and who she hasn’t seen in 18 years.

Kat feels a spark, wondering if this might be the moment when past tragedies recede and a new world opens up to her. But when she reaches out to the man in the profile, her reawakened hope quickly darkens into suspicion and then terror as an unspeakable conspiracy comes to light, in which monsters prey upon the most vulnerable.

As the body count mounts and Kat’s hope for a second chance with Jeff grows more and more elusive, she is consumed by an investigation that challenges her feelings about everyone she ever loved—her former fiancé, her mother, and even her father, whose cruel murder so long ago has never been fully explained. With lives on the line, including her own, Kat must venture deeper into the darkness than she ever has before, and discover if she has the strength to survive what she finds there.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

I know when I pick up a book written by Harlan Coben I will not be putting it down anytime soon. Missing You kept me up late into the night and the pages were flying. The John Waite song is still playing in my head.  You see it was Kat and Jeff’s special song and a very important clue.

Kat’s friend set her up with an online dating profile and it sets off a multitude of unexpected and unimaginable events. You will rethink you whole online life after reading this book.

The best thing about a Coben thriller in that his characters are so real and believable and the reader becomes invested in them very quickly. I love that our main character is female.  Within minutes we knew Kat was a strong woman but we also saw her vulnerable side. The fact the Kat is NYPD Detective with an analytical mind used to tracking down facts grips the reader as we follow the clues right along with her. The fact that is her life that is danger had my heart racing during this whole adventure.

The supporting cast is just as fully developed as the main character. From Kat’s friend Stacy, to the homeless man, Aqua, and even the psychopath and his henchman, these characters jump right off the pages.

There are many layers in this story and the clues are expertly interwoven throughout. Coben is one of those writers that sets his chapter breaks like a master, each a mini cliffhanger so you can’t stop reading even if you want to, leading to a very fast pace.

I believe I have read all of Harlan Coben’s books. I started with his Myron Bolitar series, books I picked up because I thought my husband  would like them. Since then I anxiously await each new story. And each time I reach the end the first word out my mouth is WOW!!! He is a fantastic writer and anyone would loves mystery/suspense/ thriller books with love his stories. Just be prepared, fix yourself a snack and a big glass of your favorite beverage, turn off the television and your phone, don’t plan anything because once you start reading you are not going to stop.

Elizabeth Van Lew was a paradox of her time…

Set in Virginia during the Civil War. When the state had seceded in April 1861, Elizabeth Van Lew dedicates herself to do anything she can to defy the new Confederate regime.

A fiction story based on a real woman that few people know about. Chiaverini takes us into the life of a woman inducted posthumously into the Military Intelligence Hall of Fame.

Dollycas’s Thoughts
We know Jennifer Chiaverini for her wonderful Elm Creek Quilt series. This is her second book away from the series the delves into a special woman in history. I absolutely loved Mrs. Lincoln’s Dressmaker.

Again she has intensely researched and brought us a story of another strong woman with courage and intelligence that put her life on the line to fight for this great country. She was a spinster, losing the man she loved way too soon. A woman who had no vote. A woman abolitionist, Unionist, loyal to President Lincoln living on the wrong side of the civil war. An independent woman who fought to give even a small amount of care and comfort to the Northern soldiers being held prisoner, many times with her mother by her side.

There is a lot of content in this book. Each battle, each setback, each triumph. Elizabeth Van Lew was a smart, cunning woman who could think on her feet and was able to make Confederates believe what she was doing was good for the South while passing information and more to the North. The woman seemed to have no fear.

The author’s story may not match to what others have written about Elizabeth Van Lew.  I have seen her referred to as “Crazy Bet” in other books covering this time but Chiaverini explains that her “crazy”  manner may have just been a way to avoid suspicion.

I love the way this author writes but I have to say I enjoyed Mrs. Lincoln’s Dressmaker more than the Spymistress. While both very worthwhile reads this one just had so much information I felt until overwhelmed at times. It is a very interesting and though fictionalized it is very educational. Jennifer Chiaverini has a way that makes her characters jump right out of the pages and you forget that these happenings they are enduring really took place.  I am so proud this writer calls Wisconsin home.

What if the life you wanted, and the woman you fell in love with, belonged to someone else?

Chris Canton has been unemployed for a year and his wife Claire is bringing in what income she can with her freelance Graphic Arts business. Chris is becoming more and more withdrawn and Claire feels them growing further and further apart. When he is finally offered a job that will have him traveling most of every week Claire thinks this will help their finances but may be the end of their marriage. She has never felt so alone.

Daniel Rush, a local police officer, pulls Claire over for a routine traffic stop and he feels immediately drawn to her. When they meet again at the 4th of July parade he tells her about a design job for the police department. They soon end up spending a lot of time together. They know they can be no more than friends but they love being together. They soon find they may be crossing the line Claire promised to never cross.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

That sticky question: Can a man and a woman just be platonic friends? I believe they can but there are times and situations that have you walking pretty close to the fire. I have to stay at times I wanted Claire and Daniel to be together and others when I wanted her to fight for her marriage as hard as she could.

The author handled the whole situation masterfully and she kept this reader totally captivated from page one until the final word. I learned after reading On The Island to expect wonderful stories from Tracey Garvis Graves.

Told from several points of view the reader is pulled right into the story. You feel like you are walking in each characters shoes and see things so clearly. Friendships can grow in many different ways depending on those involved and the author could have taken these 3 characters in a very different or several different directions. It’s all about choices. I bet everyone who reads this story knows people that may have made the opposite and even the same choices.

I have to say Daniel was an exceptional man. Any woman would be blessed to have a man like him in their lives, platonically or romantically.

An emotionally honest story. I really enjoyed it!

Six Years

Six years have passed since Jake Fisher watched Natalie, the love of his life, marry another man. Six years of hiding a broken heart by throwing himself into his career as a college professor. Six years of keeping his promise to leave Natalie alone, and six years of tortured dreams of her life with her new husband, Todd.

But six years haven’t come close to extinguishing his feelings, and when Jake comes across Todd’s obituary, he can’t keep himself away from the funeral. There he gets the glimpse of Todd’s wife he’s hoping for…but she is not Natalie. Whoever the mourning widow is, she’s been married to Todd for almost two decades, and with that fact everything Jake thought he knew about the best time of his life—a time he has never gotten over—is turned completely inside out.

Dollycas’s Thoughts
Classic Coben! I absolutely loved this story! Wow!

The entire story is told from Jake’s point of view and we get to know everything he is feeling from confusion to joy and every other emotion you can conceive. A character with layers and we get to peel them away and really understand his life. To love someone so quickly and so deeply, then to have them just slip away, later realizing all the lies and deception, and knowing that if he delves any further to get to the truth he is putting himself and people he cares about in danger.

This complex story is very unique and perfectly paced. I loved the romantic twist in this suspense filled novel, spiced with just a bit of humor – Coben style. Readers are taken on a wild ride from the first page to the last.  You will not be able to put this book down so plan accordingly. Harlan Coben keeps getting better and better! I don’t know how he is going to top this one! Pre-Order your copy today!
