In the California coastal town of South Cove, history is one of its many tourist attractions, until it becomes deadly. Jill Gardner, proprietor of Coffee, Books, and More, has discovered that the old stone wall on her property might be a centuries-old mission worthy of being declared a landmark. But Craig Thomas, the obnoxious owner of South Cove’s most popular tourist spot, The Castle, makes it his business to contest her claim. When Thomas is found murdered at The Castle shortly after a heated argument with Jill, even her detective boyfriend has to ask her for an alibi. Jill decides she must find the real murderer to clear her name.
But when the killer comes for her, she’ll need to jump from historic preservation to self-preservation.
Dollycas’s Thoughts
Jill is a fabulous character. And yes, she let Craig Thomas have it, but it was with words, no foul play here. But she doesn’t have an alibi and she and the mayor do not see eye to eye, in fact he would like to see her in jail. Thankfully she is now dating Detective Greg King and he knows she didn’t do it. Now if he could just figure out to keep Jill from investigating on her own and let him catch the killer. But us fans of cozy mysteries know that is just not going to happen.
Lynn Cahoon has given us another wonderful story. The owner of the antique store next to Coffee, Books and More, Josh and junk dealer Ray are the quirky and creepy characters respectively. I love Aunt Jackie and even Esmeralda with her “woo-woo” predictions. But my favorite character in this story was cop/barista Toby. He works for both Jill and Greg and is a great friend to both of them. The customers like him and so do I.
The setting is also special. South Cove sounds like a wonderful place to visit and The Castle sounds like a fantastic tourist attraction.
Cahoon takes the characters in this town and creates a story full of mystery, romance and humor. This is a perfect book to add to your Summer Reading list. Fun and entertaining with just a few hold your breath moments.

MY BLOODY VALENTINE
Curl up with this delightfully dangerous collection of short stories, aimed at making the heart grow colder.
Love sometimes requires restraints…. In Tiffinie Helmer’s “Heartless,” Roxie Scott moonlights as a dominatrix, trying to survive the financial cost of her divorce, until her clients start turning up dead.
A mystery turns personal in Alex Bledsoe’s “Tantrabobus,” when Professor Tanna Tully of “the Firefly Witch” series, leads a team of graduate students in paranormal studies to investigate the ghost of a woman who burned to death on her wedding day.
A jilted mistress is after revenge In V.R. Barkowski’s “Just a Lie,” and a Homicide Inspector must choose between revealing a truth that will destroy lives or ignoring the savage fury of a woman scorned.
Can an immortal blood drinker find redemption? In Erica Hayes’ “Unforgiven,” Lisette, who long ago learned the price of pleasure, meets an ancient enemy, a dark prince and lover who rekindles her forbidden thirst for power — and blood.
CIA operative and bioterrorism expert Mackenzie Conley comes face to face with a madman obsessed with possessing her in Lizbeth Lipperman’s SWEEPERS: A Kiss To Die For, but soon discovers escaping from her mountain prison is the least of her worries.
A broken heart leads to rebellion in Charlie Holmberg’s “Salt and Water,” in which a beautiful slave is tortured to make her cry tears that possess healing powers. Her keeper’s generosity may be the key to her escape, but even the soft-hearted slaver has secrets to hide.
When two worlds collide, chaos is inevitable, in Coreene Callahan’s “Fury of Fate,” in which Sasha Cooper embarks on a night of passion with a complete stranger who turns out to be a Dragonkind warrior. Her dream-come-true may turn out to be her worst nightmare.
Sherry Papers knows that love hurts, in S.G. Redling’s “The True Love of Sherry Papers,” and she isn’t afraid to prove it. But when the love of her life forgets that important fact, she’ll stop at nothing to remind him.

Dollycas’s Thoughts
I was excited to get this because Lizbeth Lipperman is one of my favorite authors and her short story, Sweepers, was excellent but I want more. I want to know how MacKenzie deals with the trauma she has endured. I hope there is continuing story in the works.
I also really enjoyed Heartless by Tiffany Helmer. Roxie was quite a character and meeting up again with her crush from high school made for a very interesting story.
Some of the other stories were just not “my cup of tea”. Vampires and Dragonkind warriors are not my thing. But I found six of the eight stories enjoyable.

Now in a quick Valentine’s Giveaway I will give 1 person
a gift of this collection of short stories from Amazon.

In just 2 weeks Jessie Morton and Chase Manhattan will become man and wife in one of the biggest Adventureland events ever. That is if Jessie can get Wanda’s ghost to behave and leaver her alone, get pass the fact that Chase’s family thinks she is all wrong for him and solve a murder or two. Maybe she and chase should just elope.
Dollycas’s Thoughts
I love these books. I have never been to an actual Renaissance Faire but because of these books I hope to attend one in the future. What a great ESCAPE from reality! Where else can you see Kings, Queens, Lords, Ladies, madmen, fairies, mermaids, dragons, Robin Hood and hundreds of people in full costume walking about enjoying the fantasy of it all? Plus the food, don’t forget the food.
Joyce and Jim Lavene take us there and they add the suspense of a murder or two in each installment. The descriptions are so vivid. I can see Sherwood Forest, the castle, the dungeon, the streets, the shoppes and every colorful character. Their words paint beautiful pictures in my mind. Even the curmudgeonly outsiders who enter the village who don’t believe. It is usually the outside police that come in to assist Chase but this time it includes Chase’s family as well.
This story has a great mystery with plenty of suspects to keep us guessing – Fabulous characters including a ghost – Takes place in a fantastic setting. I love reading stories that leave me smiling at the end with a few giggles throughout and anxious for the next book.
You just can’t go wrong with a Joyce and Jim Lavene mystery. (Or a J.J. Cook or an Ellie Grant, yep, that’s them too!) While I would recommend reading the series from the start the authors do a wonderful job making each book read well all on its own. Congrats Joyce and Jim and thank you for inviting me to the spectacular wedding!!

Historical Mystery
Published by Beyond the Page (May 16, 2013)
E-Book File Size: 497 KB
Print Length: 211 pages
ASIN: B00CUEGU4E
Abby Kimball moved to New England with her boyfriend when he accepted a new job. He made a good salary which gave her some time to settle in and decide whether to return to teaching or take some of her other experience and try something new. Boyfriend Brad spent a lot of time working or hanging out with his other coworkers that left Abby with a lot of alone time on her hands.
Abby decides to take a tour of historic homes in the area where she meets Ned. He was the docent for the last home on the tour. He also was a witness to a very strange experience she had in the house. As she entered one of the rooms she saw a family scene but it wasn’t a recreation using actors it was a haunting vision of a family who had lived in the house nearly a century ago. Having never had anything like that happen before she was positive something was very wrong with her. Thankfully Ned was helpful and encouraging and open to what she described to him. He even offered to help her investigate the vision and why she was seeing it in the first place. Abby leery at first eventually decides to spend her free time exploring and she finds out these visions may be connected to her own past.
Dollycas’s Thoughts
If you are familiar with Sheila Connolly or her books at all you know history is a major theme that runs trough her stories and that she is very interested in genealogy. That is what first drew me to this story but she is also a fantastic storyteller and that is what kept me reading.
I struggled a bit with Abby and Brad’s relationship at first but things started to click into place there for me rather quickly. As an avid mystery reader I kept waiting for Ned to show his ulterior motives and be the bad guy. Ned does have secrets but in a whole different direction than I originally thought.
What I really enjoyed was the process Abby followed to dig in to the local history and the visions she continued to have and the emotions she felt. People are investigating into exploring their family trees and history right now. With so much information being made available on the internet and the several websites created to help people connect the story is very current. Granted not everyone has visions like Abby but it is not beyond the realm of possibility. I have decided to keep an open mind on anything of that nature. My parents have both passed away and while I have never “seen” them or any of my other relatives there are times I just “feel” their presence. I think it would be cool to have way to really connect with them and learn more of my family history to pass on to my kids.
I thought this was a very original story tying a little paranormal activity into a different type of mystery with a bit of romance thrown in too. Connolly’s writing is very descriptive and I love it.
It was a nice, light, easy read and a perfect book for me to curl up with on a dark rainy evening.

Big Numbers Virtual Book Tour – Review & Giveaway
Big Numbers (Austin Carr Mystery)
1st in Series
Mystery/Thriller
Published by Down & Out Books (June 2, 2013)
Paperback: 204 pages
ISBN-13: 978-1937495541
E-Book File Size: 457 KB
ASIN: B00D3DJMJQ
Divorced father Austin Carr wakes up every day in a beat-up camper, parked on someone else’s private property. Why? Because his alimony and child support payments were established by New Jersey’s family court system when his income was double, and for the last two years he has failed to earn the legally mandated monthly nut. He’s had his savings drained, his Maxima repossessed, his salary attached, and his visiting rights suspended. He bought the twelve-year-old Chevy pick-up with the rusty camper for $800 last month because another landlord tossed his butt in the street.
Will stretching the rules, his own morals, and the boundaries of common sense raise the cash needed to get his kids back? Or will his big mouth and bad behavior set him up for a nasty double-cross? Find out if Austin can redeem himself and win back his children.
Dollycas’s Thoughts
Man, I thought I had bad luck! Austin Carr seems to be cursed and his ex-wife sounds like she was based on my ex-daughter-in-law. So I clearly had a soft spot for Austin from the beginning.
This story covers his life for about 3 short weeks in his life and Austin ends up in the emergency room more times than I can count, wonder if he had insurance 🙂 While tragic circumstances seem to sneak up all around him, Austin has a keen sense of humor and even when facing his own death he comes up with some classic one-liners. The author calls the story a “screwball mystery” and that describes it perfectly. It is full of suspense with snippets that will make you laugh out loud.
All Austin wants is get get his ex off his back so he can spend time with his kids. He owes her a lot of back support to make that happen so he is drawn into an unusual scheme or schemes and at times he in way over his head, drowning quite literally.
Getze has created a sensational character in Austin Carr. Even when he is breaking the law you want him to come out on top. Let’s face it a guy who wears a Speedo to his daughter’s swim competition to go unnoticed can’t be all bad.
If you like your mysteries with plenty of thrills with a side of crazy these pages will be flying. I hated for this book to end!!! I can’t wait for the re-release of Big Money!!!

Review: Ode to a Fish Sandwich by Rebecca M. Hale
Ode to a Fish Sandwich (Quirky Tales from the Caribbean)
Short Mystery Story
Green Vase Publishing (June 24, 2013)
E-Book File Size: 252 KB (92 pages)
ASIN: B00DLQJXQC
Recently jilted at the altar, Dr. Walcott Emerson Jones decides to set off on his honeymoon without his runaway bride. An adventurous week on a remote Caribbean island is just what the sun-averse dermatologist needs to mend his broken heart.
Along the way, he braves a creepy cane field, tracks a grief-stricken fisherman up the side of a volcano, and befriends a chef at the local beachside diner.
But the calculating cook has broader ambitions than spending the rest of her life serving up fish sandwiches, and the spurned diamond ring hanging from the doctor’s neck is a prize too tempting to resist. Will the vacationer’s last meal on the island turn into his last meal – ever?
A story about a man, a fish, and the daily special.
Dollycas’s Thoughts
This novella is Rebecca Hale’s first Quirky Tale from the Caribbean and it was a real treat.
Following Dr. Jones around the island for a week was fantastic and yes, quirky! Not happy staying with the confines of the posh resort he travels outside the gates and meets the unique residents of the island like Winnie, owner of Delilah’s Beachside Diner, who makes the best fish sandwiches ever. The islanders don’t know what to make of this man covered head to toe with either clothes or sunscreen but for the week he becomes a daily fixture in their lives. The even give him the nickname “White Wally”.
The story also has some quirky twists that had me humming the theme music from the old Twilight Zone television show as I reached the end.
A fun read for a quick summer escape to the Caribbean. One problem, I am now craving an authentic island fish sandwich 🙂

Rebecca M. Hale is the NY Times bestselling author of How to Wash a Cat. The series, starring Rebecca’s cats Rupert and Isabella, takes place at an antique shop in San Francisco’s historic Jackson Square. While fictional, each book features a different aspect of California history — from the Gold Rush (How to Wash a Cat
), to the San Francisco exploits of Mark Twain (Nine Lives Last Forever
), to the Bear Flag Revolt (How to Moon a Cat
). The fourth book in the series, How to Tail a Cat
, came out September, 2012.
Rebecca just released a new Mystery in the Islands series, set in the US Virgin Islands, which starts with Adrift on St. John. The second book in the series, Afoot on St. Croix (Mystery in the Islands)
, is scheduled for an October 2013 release.
Ode to a Fish Sandwich (Quirky Tales from the Caribbean) is the first short story in this series available as an e-book only.

Jennifer Lozano has just landed in Costa Rica for a friend’s bachelorette party. She was hoping a few days on a sunny, sandy beach would help her get over her broken heart. She doesn’t even get out of the airport before she finds herself in the middle of a gunfight. The man she sat next to on the plane is gunned down and one of the gunman is hit as well. Her nursing instincts kick in and she tries to help the man closest to her only to find herself being taken hostage by a group of Colombian rebels. They use her a shield to get out of the airport and take her with them as they head back to Columbia. She hears her captors talking about killing her and leaving her on the side of the road but right now they need her. The man hit was their leader and her nursing skills are needed to keep him alive. As long as she does that they will let her live, but then what?
Dollycas’s Thoughts
Wow! Wow! WOW!!!
Lipperman takes us deep into the Colombian jungle and like Jennifer the reader will be deeply affected by this group of Freedom Fighters. Men, woman and children fighting against the powerful Cali Cartel to make the region safe for them and others. Jennifer also has an awakening about her own life witnessing “the family” she has been drawn into and by the person who comes to rescue her. He too will learn his life path before was cloudy, but after his time in Columbia everything becomes clear and in total focus. It takes time before they both realize they want the same thing.
We are taken from Texas to Costa Rica then on to Columbia and back to Texas. It is quite a journey and you will be glued to the pages for the entire trip. The characters and settings are so real. This author is excellent in putting the reader right there. You can hear the gunfire, smell the food, and feel the heat. The reader is immersed into the story and you become invested in these characters.
I found this author through her cozy mysteries so I want to warn there is nothing cozy about this story. It is a suspense and thrill filled story with just a bit of romance and a strong sense of family dynamic. It is a story of courage and perseverance, hope and dreams! This is story for your keeper shelf because it is a story you will want to read again and again.
Wow!! You need to get this book today!!

A Bullet For Carlos by Giacomo Giammatteo Virtual Book Tour with Giveaway
This is my second tour for Giacomo Giammatteo.
He is definitely an author I am keeping my eye on.
A Bullet For Carlos:

Detective Connie Giannelli’s life has been torn apart several times. First when her mother died and then years later when she found out her Uncle Dominic was in the mob. Her life is about to be shredded again, and this time it could destroy her.
Connie’s love of family and her badge are both threatened when an undercover drug bust leaves two cops dead and the drugs missing. Internal Affairs is looking for any excuse to take her badge, but she’s not worried about them finding the missing drugs—her secrets could prove to be far worse.
Now Connie’s racing against the clock to figure out who killed her partners and took the drugs—dirty cops or Uncle Dominic’s friends. And she has to do it before IA pins the whole damn thing on her.
Dollycas’s Thoughts
I am so impressed with the strong female character that Giammatteo has written. Connie Giannelli is formidable woman you don’t want to mess with. Even when sent away from New York to Texas she is determined to get her man or men and bring them to justice. What a crazy life she has had and continues to lead!
He has also written some dynamo supporting characters from her uncles to the cops she works with both in New York and Houston to the cartel in Mexico. They are so fully developed and well described that you feel like you are watching a movie or television drama instead of reading a book.
I reviewed another book my this author last September, Murder Takes Time: Friendship & Honor Series, Book One (Volume 1), so I knew he created fabulous characters. In fact one crosses over to this book. The author tells his story from multiple points of view and while a tad confusing in that book he has ironed out all the issues in this one with clever icons to start each chapter and better transitions.
The story is full of action, suspense, and has engaging dialogue giving you that hold on tight/edge of your seat feeling. The book is graphic and does have some strong language that would be expected in a book of this type.
I am thrilled this book is the first in a series because I want to know more about Connie and her unconventional family and the choices she makes going forward. I hated to see this book end. I anxiously await A Bullet For Dominic. Murder Has Consequences (Friendship & Honor, Book 2)
is available now in E-book (Kindle) format. Giacomo Giammatteo is definitely an author to watch. I expect to see his books on bestseller lists everywhere very soon!

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Giacomo Giammatteo lives in Texas, where he and his wife run an animal sanctuary and take care of 41 loving rescues. By day, he works as a headhunter in the medical device industry, and at night, he writes.

Review: The Corpse With The Silver Tongue by Cathy Ace
The Corpse with the Silver Tongue
(Cait Morgan Mystery) (Cait Morgan Mysteries)
1st in Series
Mystery
TouchWood Editions (April 3, 2012)
Paperback: 240 pages
ISBN-13: 978-1927129098
E-Book File Size: 554 KB
ASIN: B007NLCLXS
Cait Morgan, a criminology professor in Canada, travels to France to present a paper for a colleague unable to attend a conference. She happens to run into an old boss and can’t escape an invitation to his wife’s birthday party. She can’t stand the man but decides to attend anyway. When the guy drops dead in the middle of dinner and the necklace he brought his wife as a birthday present disappears her quick trip to France turns into a real nightmare. Her French is not that good but knowing she is a main suspect is not lost in the translation. She wishes her friend Bud was there to help her out of this mess but he is back in Canada up to his neck in an investigation of his own.
Dollycas’s Thoughts
Ace’s first Cait Morgan mystery has that Agatha Christie feel and I was quickly caught up in the mystery. Plenty of suspects seated around the table but who would kill this pompous man and why?
I really enjoyed the location and the travels through the compound where many of the suspects resided. The gardens – beautiful, the underground tunnels – scary and revealing of secrets. The links to the past and the provenance of the necklace was so interesting.
The characters unique, from the gold digger wife to the American writer that lives upstairs. Even Bud back in Canada was easy to connect with through just the phone calls. Cait is an intriguing protagonist with her criminology background and her unusual observation skills. The detectives in France were not sure what to make of Cait Morgan but I thought they were excellent characters. Moreau did not speak much English so Bertrand had to translate. Both stayed as objective as possible until finally realizing Cait may be able to help them but by then it was almost too late.
This was a captivating debut and look forward to reading more about Cait, Bud, and hopefully Bertrand in the future.

AN OLD FRIEND MURDERED AND A NEW FRIEND IN JEOPARDY
(Maizie Albright Star Detective)
by Larissa Reinhart
A Romantic Comedy Mystery
7th in Series
#DisguisedDetectiving Maizie Albright might have once played a (teenage) private investigator on TV, but she’s now living the (adult) part. Her (mother’s) name is on her business cards. Her (boss’s) appointment book is brimming with new clients. And her bank account has grown large enough to finally trade in her dirt bike for an actual new (pre-owned) vehicle.
And then there’s Wyatt Nash. Love of her life. Future father of her…
Wait.
And then there’s Wyatt Nash. Future partner in her business. Not now. Later. Right now, they’re waiting for Maizie to get her PI license and for Nash to get out of the red so they can get on with…
Just what, Maizie isn’t so sure. But she is sure about one thing. She’s ready to take on her own cases. To prove she’s more than just a (washed-up actress) assistant private eye.
When Maizie finds her costume designer friend killed during a masquerade gala, it’s the opportunity Maizie hoped she’d never get. An investigation into an old friend’s murder. But one that’s also put her new friend in jeopardy.
While the police begin their inquiries, Maizie starts her own case. She’s needling Black Pine’s wealthy do-gooders, threading through lies, stitching together clues, and ripping out false leads. Her investigation may cost Maizie her job, her relationships, and her life. But by unspooling the truth, Maizie’s darned if they stop her from catching a killer who’s sew evil, it’s shear madness.
Grab the seventh book in The Wall Street Journal bestselling series and learn why Maizie Albright’s cases are “raucous and addictive reads” full of “twists, turns, romantic tension, humor, and fast quips!”

Worse, she may be trapped with another rat. Something in there just moved.
But Lee’s luck just changed—that’s no drowned rat. It’s her thoroughly drenched, pathetically skinny, and terminally cute new BFF— an orange and white kitten tiny enough to fit in a pocket. Well, forget the surveillance.

Aloe and Goodbye:
A Southwestern Small Town Cozy Mystery
(Ruby Shaw Mysteries)
by Janice Peacock
Cozy Mystery
1st in Series
The US marshal handling their case has this advice: Fly under the radar—but that’s difficult to do after their neighbor is murdered.
New Yorker Ruby Shaw arrives in a hillside town in Arizona with a brand-new name, a duffel bag on her shoulder, and her daughter, Allie, at her side. Before arriving, Ruby witnesses a murder that lands her in the witness protection program. That decision means she’s gone from being a successful artist to being a nobody in a postage-stamp-sized town called Paradise—a name that doesn’t fit the former ghost town. Even though their new digs are a little shabby, and there may be ghosts haunting the town, they are optimistic about their new lives, that is, until a neighbor turns up dead.
Having just arrived in town, living next door to the victim, and without an alibi, the community members are suspicious of Ruby. A local deputy befriends her, but the deputy still points to her as the culprit each time they find a new clue. If matters weren’t bad enough, Allie is having trouble fitting in at her new school, and Ruby can’t seem to hold down a job.
As they settle in, they meet the quirky inhabitants of Paradise: Bette—the chatterbox café owner, Flora—Allie’s eccentric babysitter, and Derek—who runs local history tours, which he jazzes up with ghost stories of questionable veracity.
Ruby’s life improves when she meets a handsome cook at the local café who is passionate about succulents and cacti, and may feel equally passionate about her. Even though Ruby and Allie want to stay in Paradise, a US marshal has other ideas, as he threatens to move them to a new town after Ruby gets mixed up in the murder investigation. Ruby must find the killer before she and Allie lose their new home or even worse—their lives.

The Broken Spine
(A Beloved Bookroom Mystery)
by Dorothy St. James
Cozy Mystery
1st in Series
Trudell Becket, book-loving librarian, finds herself in a bind when the library where she works is turned into a state-of-the-art bookless library. In a rare move of rebellion, Trudell rescues hundreds of her library's beloved books slated for the recycle center. She sets up a secret book room in the library's basement and opens it to anyone who shares her love of the printed book.
When the town councilman, who was the vocal proponent of the library's transformation into a "futuristic technological center," is crushed under an overturned shelf of DVDs, Trudell becomes the police's prime suspect for his murder. She was the only person in the library at the time of his death, or so the police believe. But that's not true. For the past month, Trudell had been letting a few dozen residents into the building through the basement entrance so they could read and check out the printed books.
But if she tells the police about the backdoor patrons who were in the library at the time of the murder, she'd have to explain about the secret book room and risk losing the books. In order to protect herself from being arrested for a murder she didn't commit, Trudell--with the help of a group of dedicated readers--decides to investigate. She quickly discovers you can't always judge a book by its cover.

New York Times bestselling author Laura Childs.
(A Tea Shop Mystery)
by Laura Childs
Cozy Mystery
22nd in Series
It is the week before Halloween and Theodosia Browning, proprietor of the Indigo Tea Shop, and her tea sommelier, Drayton, are ghosting through the dusk of a cool Charleston evening on their way to the old Bouchard Mansion. Known as the Gray Ghost, this dilapidated place was recently bequeathed to the Heritage Society, and tonight heralds the grand opening of their literary and historical themed haunted house.
Though Timothy Neville, the patriarch of the Heritage Society, is not thrilled with the fund-raising idea, it is the perfect venue for his grandniece, Willow French, to sign copies of her new book, Carolina Crimes & Creepers.
But amid a parade of characters dressed as Edgar Allan Poe, Lady Macbeth, and the Headless Horseman, Willow's body is suddenly tossed from the third-floor tower room and left to dangle at the end of a rope. Police come screaming in and Theodosia's boyfriend, Detective Pete Riley, is sent to Willow's apartment to investigate. But minutes later, he is shot and wounded by a shadowy intruder.
Timothy begs Theodosia to investigate, and shaken by Riley's assault, she readily agrees. Now, she questions members of the Heritage Society and a man who claims the mansion is rightfully his, as well as Willow's book publisher and her fiancé, all while hosting a Sherlock Holmes tea and catering several others.
But the Gray Ghost holds many secrets, as do several other key suspects, while this murder mystery plays out on the eve of Halloween.
