One of the unexpected joys of being an author is finding a fan out there in the world randomly. Not at a conference or a lecture, but when you’re living your everyday life and stumble upon a reader. There are three such moments that I’ll always remember.
Starbucks and Starstruck
My mom and I had just been shopping and stopped off at a Starbucks on the way home. We ordered our drinks and the server put the receipt in front of me. I signed my name and she gasped. “Are you the real Elizabeth Pantley? The author?”
“Yep, that’s me.”
She let out an actual squeal and grabbed my hand. “I love you!” she gushed, as the people around us chuckled and I blushed. She babbled about how much she loved my work. I ran out to my car where I always keep a few books in the trunk. I brought in a book, signed it to her, and left her clutching it in a hug. I still smile thinking of her.
Yes, Officer. It really is me.
We were at my son’s baseball game when an officer approached the stands. I was sitting in the front row near the middle, when she walked up to the woman seated at the end.
“I found a wallet in the parking lot,” she said. “I thought it might belong to one of the parents here.”
The officer opened the wallet to look for identification. “It belongs to Robert Pantley,” she said.
“Yep! It’s the coach,” said the parent. “But his wife is right there.” She looked over and called to me, “Elizabeth!”
I walked over and the officer looked me in the eye with an intense stare. “You’re Elizabeth Pantley, the author! Your sleep book saved my life when my baby was a newborn and I was a sleep-deprived zombie, and I still follow your blog. I’m so excited to meet you! Thanks for everything you do.”
The officer sat in the stands with me for a while. We watched my son play ball and had a great time talking about our families.
All the Way in New Zealand!
My neighbors just returned home from a trip to New Zealand to see family.
“You’re not going to believe what happened on our trip!” they said.
I was ready to hear a story of their traveling adventure. Instead, I heard something very different.
“We went to our cousin’s house, and there on her coffee table was your book!”
“You’re kidding! All the way in New Zealand?”
“It was right there! We told her you were our neighbor, but she didn’t believe us! Finally, I think she did, but can you sign a book for her? We’ll send it with the package we’re shipping to her. She’ll be so happy!”
So, there it went. A signed book to my new friend across the pond!

The Reasons I Love Paranormal Cozy Mystery Books

I love all cozy mystery books! I adore the spunky, inexperienced, flawed-but-loveable main characters and quirky, fun supporting casts. I enjoy the small-town settings. I have fun dissecting the mystery, without having to read any disturbing details of the actual murder. I appreciate that the world-building and the character development is as important to the story as the mystery itself. I can lose myself in these stories and enjoy the trip. And I know that there’s always a happy ending waiting for me.
My favorite type of cozy mystery books to read – and write – are those of the paranormal variety. In addition to all that cozy mysteries have to offer, there are some special attributes that draw me to the magical versions of this genre.
Anything can happen – and I mean anything!
Cozies with paranormal characters and settings are not limited to real world scenarios or the rules of mere earthly beings. There are no boundaries to what can happen. When witches, fairies, shifters, vampires, or ghosts are involved, the possibility of what can happen next is unlimited. It always keeps me guessing.
Imperfect main characters have unusual magical abilities.
I love it when people who seem normal discover that they have magical abilities. How amazing would it be to find out that you can shapeshift into a wolf, or clean your house with the flick of a wrist? Traveling along with this imperfect human who blossoms with magical enhancements in their life is a world of fun.
Slow burn romances that cross the line of species.
A match between a fairy, a vampire, or a werewolf and a human? Why not! Especially those in cozies who are strong, brave, and magically capable! This isn’t something you’ll find on your usual dating website.
Animals with attitude – and the voices to match.
Cats, dogs, horses, and miniature pigs with quirky personalities and complete loyalty to their humans? Sign me up! It’s a blast to imagine how your own cat, dog, or bird might sound if they had a voice. The personalities of these critters usually add a humorous touch to these books, since they lend themselves to be lighthearted characters that brighten up any story.
There you have it! Paranormal cozy mystery books open up a whole new world of fun and adventure, and that’s why I love them.

It’s a magical book club! When this group chooses a book, magic happens. The mystery comes to life, and they find themselves part of the story. To exit the book and get back home, they need to solve the mystery and reach The End.
This time, the club chooses a book called The Great Cake Rivalry, because, well … cake! They read the back cover and it’s unanimous. So off they go into another grand adventure into a town aptly named Frosting.
Frosting is a rural town in an idyllic setting. The people live quiet lives most of the year. But in the spring, things change. The Annual Cake Competition becomes the focus of every man, woman, and child. They take this competition seriously. The cakes are spectacular. The festival is fabulous. For a week there are contests featuring all kinds of cakes. The people of the community become official tasters and vote for the winning cakes in each category.
The grand finale is a display of finely decorated cakes, made by the town’s bakeries. The winner of the best design receives a prize package that would make any baker dizzy.
Sadly, this event has been tainted. Once a year, each one different, but all somehow related to this event, a person is murdered. The main investigator is stumped, but that could be because he’s an inept buffoon.
Can the book club help the people of this community figure out who is causing this disturbing pattern of deaths, and stop another murder from happening? Can they figure out why some of the citizens dress so oddly, and why they always wear those unique backpacks? All while they fill themselves to the brim with cake, of course.
