Black Cat and the Secret in Dewey’s Diary:
A Tale of History, Mystery, Riddles, and Gold.
by Elaine Faber

Today I am pleased to welcome Kimberlee from Black Cat and the Secret in Dewey’s Diary.

Kimberlee Visits Salzburg
by Elaine Faber

My name is Kimberlee. I’m in Germany and Austria with my cousin, here to attend a convention. While we’re here, we plan to follow the clues to a lost treasure I found in a WWII soldier’s diary. Is there any chance it’s still hidden, and I can find it with the clues no one else has seen for over fifty years?

Today I’m in Salzburg. I see painted scenes on the exterior walls of the buildings, cobbled streets, roofs of clay tiles, and churches with steeples and bell towers. Many of the houses have leaded glass windows and flower boxes. An ancient ivy-covered building across the street has a sagging tile roof across the courtyard. A kitty who looks like my Black Cat sits atop a nearby rooftop, meowing, as tourists peer up and try to decide; is he hungry, or just bored and teasing the tourists? Church spires peek out above nearby houses with red tile rooftops. Dates carved into the bricks range from the year 1200-1400. One church is said to be 1000 years old.

The sky darkens with rain clouds over the city, which remains unchanged for hundreds of years. Yes, as modern times came, freeways and electric wires appeared, the merchandise sold in the stores has likely changed, and automobiles replaced the horse carriages, which once clip-clopped along the cobbled streets. The narrow lanes remain the same, the lovely churches, fortresses, palaces, and hillsides are unchanged.

I marvel at the timelessness of this beautiful country. Though there are industrial areas, much of the countryside is still in its wilderness state, as it was at the moment of creation, lush and green and seemingly immune to modern marvels. The city will tolerate progress but it will not give in to it. Here in the town square, on the church steps, a street musician plays Ave Maria on his violin. Pigeons fly from rooftop to rooftop, seeming mesmerized as the music echoes around the courtyard. I let my mind wander and it is easy to imagine people driving horse-drawn carts through the cobbled streets.

Another day, music might have filled this same courtyard, not from the musician’s violin, but from the window down the street where a thin, young boy named Mozart played the harpsichord and wrote melodies that made him famous, even hundreds of years later.

A horse cart clip-clops by, as the last beautiful strains of Ave Maria fade into the sky.

I return to my car, eyes filled with wonder and do not notice the strange man who followed me back to my car.

Tomorrow we will contact Dewey’s relatives. They may be able to explain the peculiar message written in his diary. Touch the feet of the babe who lies beneath the king…In the place where the storm clouds are frightened away by the ring.

What can it mean? What are the chances we can solve the puzzle and locate the treasure?

For the whole story, read Black Cat and the Secret in Dewey’s Diary, a dual story narrated by Black Cat in Fern Lake and Kimberlee in Austria as she follows the clues to a lost treasure.

In this dual tale of mystery, lost treasure, and riddles, while Black Cat narrates the exciting events in Fern Lake, Kimberlee discovers a cryptic clue in a diary about a hidden treasure, and heads to Austria to solve the puzzle.

When Kimberlee and Dorian arrive in Austria, they attract the attention of a stalker determined to steal the diary in hopes the clues will lead him to the treasure first. On a collision course, it is inevitable that Kimberlee and the stalker meet in Hopfgarten.

Black Cat and Angel’s lives are endangered with the arrival of Kimberlee’s grandmother in Fern Lake, and the return of a man presumed dead for twenty-five years. With both arrivals, emotional and financial difficulties loom for Kimberlee’s family. Since their return to Fern Lake, Angel seems reluctant or unable to adjust to her new home. Does she regret leaving Texas and Grandmother? And, when the opportunity arises, will she decide to leave Black Cat and Fern Lake?

Praise for Black Cat and the Secret in Dewey’s Diary:
A Tale of History, Mystery, Riddles, and Gold.

The story was a fun puzzle and even contained a treasure hunt. The interplay between the two cats, Black Cat and Angel, was cute.
~Ruff Drafts

These are two unconnected stories, linked only in that Kimberlee, the main character, is in both . . . That said, the present-day murder mystery was a puzzle that kept me guessing, right to the surprise ending . . . The WWII treasure hunt also had an intriguing and satisfying tie-up of facts.

While the ‘tiger of war’ rages across the Pacific during WWII, eccentric, elderly Agnes Odboddy, ‘fights the war from the home front’. Her patriotic duties are interrupted when she is accused of the Wilkey’s Market burglary.

A traveling carnival with a live tiger joins the parishioner’s harvest fair at The First Church of the Evening Star and Everlasting Light. Accused again when counterfeit bills are discovered at the carnival, and when the war bond money goes missing, Agnes sets out to restore her reputation and locate the money. Her attempts lead her into harm’s way when she discovers a friend’s betrayal and even more about carnival life than she bargained for.

Granddaughter Katherine’s turbulent love triangle with a doctor and an FBI agent rivals Agnes’s own on-again, off-again relationship with Godfrey.

In Faber’s latest novel, your favorite quirky character, Mrs. Odboddy, prevails against injustice and faces unexpected challenges . . . and then There Was a Tiger!

Author Interview

Elaine Faber

  1. Tell us a little bit about yourself I think someone said, “I’m a little bit older than my teeth.” Others say, ‘when I look in the mirror, my mother looks back.’ For me, both are true. I’m a wife, mother, grandmother and at this printing, a new great-grandmother. Mostly I write short stories and novels. That’s pretty much what I do, therefore, who I am.
  1. What are three things most people dont know about you? I’m terrified of dentists though I force myself to go twice a year. I don’t like movies or books where ‘people’ abuse one another, either physically or emotionally. Having had a brief run-in with breast cancer, I volunteer at the American Cancer Society Discovery Shop.
  1. What is the first book you remember reading? Probably a Dick and Jane book in the first grade.
  1. What are you reading now? Joanne Fluke – Carrot Cake Murder. I like cozy mysteries.
  1. What made you decide you want to write? I always wrote poems and short stories, even in grade school and high school. I still have some faded typewritten pages of short stories.
  1. Do you have a special place you like to write? Not really. I write at my office computer. I don’t have a laptop for other locations. I need complete silence to think and write.
  1. Where do the ideas for your books come from? I suppose they come from my muddled, convoluted brain. Sometimes, the characters in my books have a mind of their own. Sometimes I have no clue where I’ll end up as they lead me from pillar to post.
  1. What books have most inspired you? Paul Gallico’s Silent Meow inspired me to write a story where the cat ‘tells his own tale,’ as I’ve done with my three cozy cat mysteries, Black Cats Legacy, Black Cat and the Lethal Lawyer, and Black Cat and the Accidental Angel. John Steinbeck’s Grapes of Wrath inspires me to strive to describe scenes in a way to make the reader shiver with each experience. The Bible inspires me to be a better Christian.
  1. Is there anything about writing you find most challenging? It takes thousands of hours to write and complete a novel. It is most challenging to one’s self-esteem, wondering why more people won’t buy and enjoy our books. A writer writes not for the glory or even the money, but for the praise. One is encouraged, however, by the sales.
  1. What do you think makes a good story? An interesting plot, a character that convinces the reader enough that she is willing to ‘go with them’ on their journey. The reader must be satisfied by the ending. There must be a combination of humor, adventure, suspense, and a story is never a ‘good story,’ unless there is a cat.
  1. Which, of all your characters, do you think is the most like you? Odboddy is closest to my age, and perhaps has a bit of my snarky sense of humor, but Black Cat (from my cozy cat series) is close to my heart. I think there must be a bit of me in every character.
  1. Why did you pick your particular genre? I read cozy mystery, or mystery fiction. I suppose since I know that best, it would make sense to write in one’s favorite genre.
  1. What makes your books different from others out there in this genre? Many aspects would likely be similar to other books in this genre; a good plot, fun characters, humor. However, in Mrs. Odboddy’s adventures, I’ve involved Agnes with little known historical facts from WWII, as well as much detail about life as it was in a small town during the war years. Throw in a hysterical, older female protagonists and I think my stories stand out from other cozy mystery/adventures.
  1. Whats next on the horizon for you? I have completed a fourth cozy cat mystery, now in editing phase, probably TBP next year, and I’m currently working on a fourth Mrs. Odboddy adventure where she is involved with ‘saving the tiger’ you will meet in Odboddy- And Then There was a Tiger. The title refers not only to the carnival tiger, Shere Khan, but to the ‘Tiger of War’ that America faced during WWII.

Synopsis:

Since the onset of WWII, Agnes Agatha Odboddy, hometown patriot and self-appointed scourge of the underworld, suspects conspiracies around every corner…stolen ration books, German spies running amuck, and a possible Japanese invasion off the California coast. This seventy-year-old, model citizen would set the world aright if she could get Chief Waddlemucker to pay attention to the town’s nefarious deeds on any given Meatless Monday.

Mrs. Odboddy vows to bring the villains, both foreign and domestic, to justice, all while keeping chickens in her bathroom, working at the Ration Stamp Office, and knitting argyles for the boys on the front lines.

Imagine the chaos when Agnes’s long-lost WWI lover returns, hoping to find a million dollars in missing Hawaiian money and rekindle their ancient romance. In the thrilling conclusion, Agnes’s predictions become all too real when Mrs. Roosevelt unexpectedly comes to town to attend a funeral and Agnes must prove that she is, indeed, a warrior on the home front.
