The Dreaded Deadline
By Erika Chase, author of the Ashton Corners Book Club Mysteries

I was trying to come up with a blog topic and not doing so well. What was really going on in my head was the fact that the deadline for my new manuscript, Roux the Day, the second in the Dinner Club Mysteries, is due in less than two weeks. And here’s this blog deadline looming, a few days after my Mystery Lover’s Kitchen blog deadline, which was a week after my Killer Characters blog deadline. And then I had the ‘aha’ moment! What’s the constant in my life these days? Deadlines.

9780425278215A quick aside – the first book in my new series for Berkley, which I’m writing under my real name, Linda Wiken, is titled Toasting Up Trouble and will be out on July 5th! It’s about a dinner club (no surprise there), in Burlington, VT, with food, recipes, and of course, murder.

Now, back to deadlines. This may not be a very exciting topic to you dear reader, but think about it. We all have them, whether it’s a writing deadline, a cooking dinner deadline, a deadline for sending in money for your child’s school outing. Even the ultimate deadline, the dreaded income tax!

What fascinates me is how we all handle them. I admit, I’m kind of reckless, preferring to live life on the deadline edge. I blame it on my training as a journalist – you know, breaking story, short deadline, just do it! I’m afraid this has transferred over to my fiction writing as well. If I have a long deadline, say nine months or a year, I whittle away at the piece until it comes closer to the crunch. And then, I’m bum-to-the-chair, long hours of writing, feeling revved up and full of ideas.

What a way to live! It usually works just fine though, except when life chooses to interfere. An unexpected appointment; a sick friend; a sick pet; or, too many deadlines at the same time.

I’ve tried to re-train myself, setting early artificial deadlines but that’s exactly what they are – artificial and I find it hard to fool myself.

I have several friends who operate in a different style. They make sure they’re finished well in advance of that deadline. And I mean, well in advance. Their lives are structured, well-balanced, and healthy, without being constricted. I’m certain their stress levels are negligible or at least at what is considered acceptable. Health professionals do say a certain amount of stress in our lives is healthy.

I so admire those friends but know I have as much chance of joining their ranks as I do of winning the Nobel Prize for anything.

What I need to do is carry on in my own somewhat self-destructive way, ensure I have other interests to add balance to my life, and some wonderful, understanding friends…even if most of them are more adept at handling deadlines.

What about you? How do you approach those deadlines in your life?

The Ashton Corners Book Club Mysteries has been one of my favorite series. You can read my review of Law and Author here. As you can see I was really looking forward to the next book in this series but Penguin Random House didn’t share my enthusiasm and have cancelled the series. Now I am looking forward to Erika’s new series!

Erika ChaseBook Clubs by Erika Chase

Do you know the best thing about being in a book club? Did you think I’d say, the books? Well, it’s the people. Those terrific mysteries can be read any time and talked about over coffee or one afternoon during shopping therapy. But, if you’re lucky, it’s the people that make it special. And believe me, I hit the jackpot.

law and authorWe’ve been together for five books now. Law and Author is the most recent. And during that time, we’ve grown into family. Maybe it’s the camaraderie of sharing the books and of course, the cheese straws and other tasty treats. It also could be the, let’s see, I think it’s six bodies we’ve found and of course, gotten involved in tracking down the killers. You know, you just can’t let a murderer get away, especially when one of your friends is being unjustly accused.

In Law and Author, it’s not one of us though, who makes it to the top of the suspect list. It’s Bob Miller’s granddaughter. Bob’s the retired Police Chief and sweet on Molly Mathews, but I digress. His wife left him, taking their young daughter, many years ago. Seems his salary wasn’t enough to keep her in the manner she desired. They divorced, she married a banker with a fatter bank account, and never let Bob see his daughter again. Really mean spirited, I think.

But then with her demise, and the money tap shut off, Bob’s granddaughter, Darla, whom he never even knew existed, turns up on Molly’s doorstep looking for her granddaddy. The guys were away on a fishing weekend and were lucky this time, meaning we got to feast on fresh bass.

Next thing we know, Darla came back the next day for our barbecue and Molly invites her to stay, as in her house for many days. But then a body is found in the back yard, and all hell breaks loose. So, of course, we, being the book club, have to help out.

That’s what we do. Sure, we haggle over books, like Molly loves Agatha Christie while Bob wants a contemporary police procedural. Stephanie’s into more of the chick lit mysteries and Andie loves anything with Stephanie Plum doing the sleuthing. Sally Jo likes a little romance in hers while her main squeeze, Jacob, being a lawyer, likes law reads. That’s our group. Oh, just about forgot me. I’m pretty much on the same page as Sally Jo but maybe something with more of an edge.

Of course, we all agree on the Cheese Straws hence our name, the Ashton Corners Mystery Book Readers and Cheese Straws Society. Food for the brain and the stomach! Great combination.

I have a great idea. Why don’t y’all join us at the BBQ. Just meet up with us in chapter two of Law and Author. And remember to bring your appetite and a sunhat.

The author of Book Fair and Foul reconvenes the Ashton Corners book club to solve a murder in their own backyard . . .

Bob Miller, retired police chief and member of the Ashton Corners Mystery Readers and Cheese Straws Society, is stunned by the arrival of his twenty-one-year-old granddaughter, Darla, whom he has never seen. Bob has been estranged from his own daughter for decades and hopes to make up for his absence in Darla’s life. But some of the ladies of the book club find their Southern hospitality strained as they question the motives behind this sudden reunion.

After a dead man is found in Molly Mathews’s backyard, their concerns grow more serious. Lizzie Turner saw Darla arguing with the stranger the day before, but when the police question her, Darla proves to be an unreliable narrator. It’s up to the book club to uncover the real story . . . before another victim is written into the plot.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

The guys are away on a fishing trip when Molly gets a visitor, a young woman claiming to be Bob’s granddaughter. When he and his wife split up she took their daughter and refused Bob any time he wanted to see her. He thinks maybe spending time with his granddaughter, Darla, could be his second chance. Then a dead man is found in Molly’s backyard and he may be connected to Darla. She may be the police’s prime suspect. This gets the Ashton Corners Mystery Readers and Cheese Straws Society in high gear. They need to find out more about Darla and the life she left behind to find Bob and if she really did know the man who was killed. It time to get to the bottom of her story.

I must be a doubting person because I would have questioned Darla’s story from the moment she arrived. Molly was far more welcoming and Bob much more accepting than I would have been. But then my love for this group of characters and my love of the chase to catch a killer took over and I was following the clues and where they led. Lizzie always gives me a few palpitations as she noses her way into places where others fear to tread.

The character that was my favorite this was Sally Jo. All she wants to do is plan her wedding but her mother has her own ideas. I can relate, been there, done that.

As always Erika gives us a wonderful mystery with plenty of diversions to throw us and the Society off the trail. The subplots are fun and interesting. I love the way the characters and their relationships continue to evolve and grow not only with each book but throughout each story.

Pluses for us book lovers –

  • Each chapter starts with a quote from another author’s book. Several of which I have read and reviewed.
  • There are Reading Lists for each character at the end of the story. They all like  a bit different type of stories.

We are a left with a “Oh My” moment that will have fans of the series wanting the next book as soon as possible.

For the mystery book lovers of Ashton Corners,
burial plots tell the most intriguing stories.

The members of the Ashton Corners Mystery Readers and Cheese Straws Society are all chipping in as Molly Mathews, now owner of the bookstore the Book Nook, prepares the first annual Mystery Book Fair. While gossip circulates about the guest authors, club member Lizzie Turner is unpleasantly surprised to see a certain book publicist make an appearance. It seems Lizzie has a history with Ashley Dixon—a chapter of her life she’d rather leave closed.

But when someone gives Ashley a death sentence, Lizzie becomes the prime suspect in a murder mystery she can’t put down. Now Lizzie and her fellow book buffs have to read between the lines of the publicist’s past and catch the real killer before Lizzie is written off for good.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

I knew I had to hurry up and read this book because Law and Author comes out September 1.

This is the 4th book in the series and the Ashton Corners Mystery Readers and Cheese Straws Society is helping the Book Nook hold a book fair. They hope it will become an annual event. The fair brings an unexpected guest, someone from Lizzie’s past. Ashley Dixon is now a publicist working with the book fair authors but she seems to have another reason for being in town. Before Lizzie can find out what it is Ashley is dead and Lizzie is even a suspect!

The was a lighthearted read that found Molly, Lizzie, and their friends trying to keep the guest authors entertained while they try to close the book on the murder. At first I thought I knew exactly who killed Ashley but I was so wrong. Erica Chase threw in a bunch of twists and those pages kept turning and turning and turning and then the true culprit was revealed and it made perfect sense.

This series is full of great characters and I am so looking forward to visiting them again soon. Erika Chase will be my guest for Cozy Wednesday on September 16!

cozy wednesday 2013 640Welcome to Cozy Wednesday!!

Today I am excited to welcome Erika Chase to Escape With Dollycas!

Erika ChaseHi Everyone!

I love writing cozies. I love reading cozies. And I love sharing cozies. I don’t necessarily mean lending a copy of a new find to a friend but rather, telling that friend she’s missing out on a great new read if she doesn’t try author X’s new book.

In this day of social media trumps all, I still believe it’s the old-fashioned way that works best. You enjoyed reading a book, tell a friend. Or tell all your Facebook friends. Tweet it, also. The reader is the most important ingredient once that book hits the bookstands.

I’m sure every author agrees that the hours and cost of doing promotion can be staggering. But that’s what it takes. Once you are writing a series, a certain amount of would-be writing time must now be dedicated to getting the word out about the latest book or the new series, even though the next deadline is already looming.

The publishers are not doing this to any great extent any longer. It’s just not viable in this shrinking publishing industry. And so, the task must belong to the writer who has to make sure review copies reach the necessary people, order swag if that’s part of the promotional plan, organize a launch, appear as a guest blogger many times over, keep refreshing the author website, regularly post on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and whatever else works. Then there are the conventions to attend, the stores to buzz, the signings to arrange, the book clubs to visit, the libraries to check in with, and anything creative the author can devise.

Believe me, that takes time. And yes, there’s still that next book that needs to be written.

Don’t get me wrong…this isn’t a rant. I’m just stating facts and I enjoy every minute of it. But what it comes back to is the reader. And, I’m a reader. I always have a cozy or two on the go and I’m quick to tell friends when I’ve come across a keeper. And, I do have to be choosy these days as my shelf space is dwindling while my TBR pile grows higher.

That’s the lure of books. Seeing a stack just ripe for the picking, whether it’s on your nightstand or piled on the floor. Knowing that no matter what your mood, there’s a book that meets all your reading requirements at any given time.

If you like a book, love a series…tell a friend and hopefully, they’ll get hooked too and also spread the word. That’s a good way to ensure that cozies survive and thrive as publishers continue to evaluate their future directions. I do believe it’s a bright future for cozies. Just check out the attendance at Malice Domestic, Left Coast Crime or the Festival of Mystery held yearly by Mystery Lovers Bookshop in Oakmont, PA.  Look at the new titles put out monthly by Berkley Prime Crime, Obsidian, and the many other devoted publishers. In fact, look at the number of new small press coming on the scene. It’s reassuring and quite a delight for the reader.

When I’m not writing, I’m reading. Okay, maybe I’m also doing other things like cleaning the house, shopping for groceries, attending a dental appointment – that’s life intruding on pleasure. But I wait with eagerness for each month’s new releases, I’m sure I’m among the first to read the next book by my author friends, and I don’t hesitate to tell all who can hear or read, that I just loved that book.

I truly hope your reading is providing you with such delight that you’re also eager to spread the word. Because, readers rule! As do blogsites like Escape with Dollycas into a Good Book. Thanks, Lori for having such a great spot to meet with other readers.

Thanks Erika for dropping by and writing the stories for us to enjoy!!

Murder is nothing novel for the Ashton Corners Mystery Readers and Cheese Straws Society—but this time the police want to throw the book at one of their own…

Teensy Coldicutt has moved back to Ashton Corners and reunites with her childhood friend Molly Mathews. Molly is very excited to have her friend back in town and thrilled to learn that Teensy has written book, a steamy novel. She quickly enlisted the help of the Ashton Corners Mystery Readers and Cheese Straws Society, the local book club, to plan a book signing tour to promote the book.

But there must be more to this sexy story than it appears because Molly is attacked and several boxes of Teensy’s books are stolen. Then the publisher of the book is murdered and fellow club member and former police chief Bob Miller is taken into custody. Why would a titillating novel written by an elderly widow draw such criminal attention? and what in the world could Bob have to do with it? Lizzie and her friends are determined to find out the rest of the story before the killer gets the chance to write someone else off…

Dollycas’s Thoughts
I love this series and adore all of the characters but Molly is my favorite. She is my kind of lady, nothing and no one stands in her way. In this story she even gets attacked and injured and she barely misses a step. Thankfully Lizzie knows how to handle/take care of her and does her very best to keep her safe. The Ashton Corners Mystery Readers and Cheese Straws Society group as a whole are all unique and real and a grand group of people. I would love to be a member of this group!

Erika Chase gives us quite a mystery to solve in this installment with the twists and turns that keep us guessing until the very end. This reader was very surprised with the way this one played out.

The author brings the book club feel by starting each chapter with a line from a popular mystery and includes the reading list of each book club member at the end of the book. I really enjoy seeing both current and past mysteries and their authors mentioned throughout the story. Like when the youngest member of the group is concerned about the killer blowing up Lizzie’s car to stop her from investigating, the other members try to steer her away from reading too much of Janet Evanovich’s Stephanie Plum series. It is touches like this that make the story so enjoyable.

Book Fair and Foul is the next title in this fun and entertaining series. I can’t wait for my next escape to Ashton Corners.

Welcome to Cozy Wednesday!!

I have been excited about this author and this series for months. A few months back I heard there was going to be a new mystery series featuring a book club. I haven’t belonged to a face to face book club for several years but I remember we talked about a lot of things that had nothing to do with books. Some evenings we never even talked about the book at all, but they were always fun and like the book club in this story food is a very important ingredient to any club that wants to be a success.

So grab a little snack and drink from the virtual buffet table and help me welcome Ericka to Escape With Dollycas Into A Good Book! The cheese straws are very tasty.

Welcome Erika!

Hi Everyone!!

I’ve had a truly wonderful month, starting with the release of the first Ashton Corners Book Club mystery, A Killer Read on April 3rd. That’s quite a thrill, seeing your book cover on the web pages of the bookstores and hearing from readers that they’ve purchased it, are reading it, and heavens, even like it!

When a writer starts that journey from blank page to finished, edited manuscript there’s the constant question nagging away at the back of the brain – will anyone read it? Okay, two questions – and, will anyone like it? It’s a ‘pinch me’ moment when the feedback starts coming in.

Which truly points out that writing is all about being part of a community.

At my book launch last week, I met former neighbors, friends and family, former customers and writing colleagues, people I sang with and book club comrades. They’d all come out to help me celebrate one of the most important events in my life. And they’d been there all along, some actively supporting with words of reassurance, sometimes a good kick in the butt, and often some very skilled writing critiques. Others had taken part in this process just because they’d been a part of my life and though these were more subtle influences, they were still part of the entire package.

Readers are an important part of that community, because that is the bottom line to each publishing story. Does the reader enjoy the story? Do the readers want more?

Just as I write about a community, in this case a community of mystery readers in a book club, so I am part of many communities. And it’s the friendships that grow out of these that are so important in our lives.

In Ashton Corners, the book club friends enjoy sharing and comparing thoughts on the mysteries they read; support each other through their personal challenges; and of course, get down to the nitty gritty of sleuthing out a murderer! What could be a more bonding situation?

I enjoy visiting with this community of characters every day as their stories continue. The second in the series, Read and Buried will be out in December, 2012 and the third is almost ready to be sent off.

Books, friends and murder! Hope you’ll join us!

~Erika

Thank you so much Erika!! I am patiently waiting for the next installment.

A KILLER READ

A Killer Read (An Ashton Corners)
Berkley Prime Crime Mystery

Published by The Penguin Group
A Brand New Series!
Available Now!!

Welcome to the Ashton Corners Mystery Readers and Cheese Straw Society hosted in Molly Mathew’s old Southern mansion.

The first meeting doesn’t go as planned when a stranger bursts through the door and demands to use the phone. He is later found dead in front of the house. Nobody knows who this man is or why he died in front of Molly home. The group is even more dumbfounded when they learn he was shot by an antique gun that belonged to Molly’s deceased husband.

Add to this confusion, a manuscript starts showing up a few chapters at a time in Lizzie Turner’s mailbox. Lizzie works for the school district as a reading specialist and it was her idea to start the book club. She never dreamed they would be solving mysteries instead of reading them.

Dollycas’s Thoughts
Erika has brought together a nice group of eclectic characters for this series and introduces them to us perfectly, laying the foundation for us to learn more in future stories. The plot is tight and full of twists that mislead the reader and I loved it!!!

While Lizzie is the main character and she is wonderful I really like Molly. She opens her house up to not only the book club but a literacy group and a tutoring program to keep her house “alive” since her husband passed away. She is also “a mover and a shaker in the community and truly one of the nosiest broads” around according to ex chief of police Bob Miller. She sounds like my kind of lady and the perfect character for a cozy mystery.

Each chapter has a sentence from a popular mystery as its header. You can’t go wrong with mood setters like those. The author also includes each of the book club members reading list at the end of the book. Both of these I guarantee will nourish readers appetites and add titles to your wish lists.

The is a super debut that would not only be great for a book club read but for all of us that like our mysteries on the cozy side. A Wonderful Who-Dun-It!!
