A brazen killer sparks Theodosia Browning’s sense of justice in this latest installment of the New York Times bestselling series.
As fireflies dazzle like tiny glowing lanterns, tea maven Theodosia hosts an elegant evening tea on the patio of the Tangled Rose B and B. But in this gentle darkness an intruder has made their way in and slipped deadly drugs into the baked Alaska of Mrs. Van Courtland, one of Charleston’s local grande dames. Shocked by this brazen act, urged on by Mrs. V’s grieving son, Theodosia begins her own shadow investigation. Soon, she finds herself at odds with a greedy developer, the questionable residents of Honey Badger House, a vengeful ex-daughter-in-law, ne’er do well relatives, and a housekeeper who knows all the secrets.
As Theodosia hosts a Moulin Rouge Tea and a Queen Victoria Tea, her tea sommelier Drayton is assaulted by a masked stranger and the fiancé of Mrs. V’s son is kidnapped. It’s only at the Starry Starry Night black tie ball that Theodosia stumbles upon the killer and gets pulled into a dramatic life and death chase.
Dollycas’s Thoughts
Indigo Tea Shop owner, Theodosia Browning, and her tea sommelier, Drayton Conneley, are hosting a beautiful Firefly tea on the patio of the Tangled Rose B and B, and the fireflies put on a delightful show. All the guests are enjoying the teas Drayton has matched with Haley’s menu of orange and pecan scones, citrus salads, squab with gold rice, and crispy Brussels sprouts with paprika aioli.
Then it is time to serve the “Pièce de résistance”: Alaska bombes. As Haley serves, Theodosia and Drayton follow with small butane torches to flambe the decadent desserts tableside. Shortly thereafter, Mrs. Van Courtland breaks into a coughing fit, followed by “panicked-striken gasps” and her body shaking violently. Several people tried to help the local grande dame, but she did not survive. It is then that they discover someone crashed the party and added something extra to Mrs. Van Courtland’s baked Alaska, and it killed her.
Who would have committed such a shameless act? The victim’s son wants Theodosia to find out, providing her with a couple of possible suspects.
So while a Moulin Rouge Tea and a Queen Victoria Tea are served at the Indigo Tea Shop, Theodosia has murder on her mind. When Drayton is attacked by someone wearing a mask, and Mrs. V’s son’s fiancé is kidnapped, the pressure is on to solve the case. It is at the Starry Starry Night black tie ball where the chase begins and where “TV Gold” soon happens.
In this 30th Tea Shop Mystery, Theodosia, Drayton, and Haley have their hands full from the start with a Firefly Tea and a murder. A murder, our successful amateur sleuth is hesitant to get involved in. Riley is out of town, but she knows he wouldn’t want her involved. But Drayton and Delaine think the case is “right up her alley”. Theodosia is a smart, strong woman and knows Detective Burt Tidwell will not be happy if she butts into his case, but everyone knows she is going to snoop and ask questions. Her curious nature and the drive to see justice for Mrs. Van Courtland are too strong to sit on the sidelines. Drayton will be her loyal sidekick. They have been at this a while and work together so well in everything they do, including hunting killers. Theodosia has her tea shop ballet down pat, and Drayton’s vast tea knowledge shines in every pot he serves. Riley excels in the kitchen, but she jumps right in with her theories about the case. I love all their interactions.
Ms. Childs surrounds her core characters with a marvelous supporting cast. This time, Delaine is joined by Aunt Libby and Angie Congdon from the Featherbed House in the efforts to cajole Theodosia into investigating. I enjoyed that Aunt Libby was so involved in this story.
There was an interesting cast of suspects: family, a developer, the housekeeper, teenagers from a charity the victim supported, and more. Theodosia finds herself entangled in a mystery she really didn’t want to be involved in. She knows she is on the right track when she is targeted on a run with her Dalbrador, Earl Grey, and Drayton is assaulted behind the teashop. Both are determined to carry on with the investigation. They kept their eyes and ears open and followed each clue, but it was help garnered from an unexpected source that cut through the subterfuge and gave Theodosia her A-Ha moment, and she ran with it. It was a very entertaining chase with priceless commentary from Drayton and an unlikely passenger in the getaway car. When the chase came to an abrupt halt, Detective Tidwell had a surprising reaction to it all.
I just love the way Ms. Childs tells a story. Her attention to detail puts her readers right on the scene with all the colorful characters. She plots a well-thought-out mystery to keep us on our toes. She infuses humor naturally into the story. And she includes recipes of some of the tempting, tasty treats we have been reading about. As a bonus, she adds Tea Time Tips and Resources. Death at a Firefly Tea is a fantastic addition to this long-running series and A Perfect Escape! A Must Read for all cozy mystery lovers!

About Laura Childs

Laura Childs is the New York Times bestselling author of the Tea Shop Mysteries, Scrapbook Mysteries, and Cackleberry Club Mysteries. In her previous life she was CEO/Creative Director of her own marketing firm and authored several screenplays. She is married to a professor of Chinese art history, loves to travel, rides horses, enjoys fundraising for various non-profits, and has two Chinese Shar-Pei dogs.
Laura specializes in cozy mysteries that have the pace of a thriller (a thrillzy!) Her three series are:
The Tea Shop Mysteries – set in the historic district of Charleston and featuring Theodosia Browning, owner of the Indigo Tea Shop. Theodosia is a savvy entrepreneur and pet mom to service dog Earl Grey. She’s also an intelligent, focused amateur sleuth who doesn’t rely on coincidences or inept police work to solve crimes. This charming series is highly atmospheric and rife with the history and mystery that is Charleston.
The Scrapbooking Mysteries – a slightly edgier series that takes place in New Orleans. The main character, Carmela, owns Memory Mine scrapbooking shop in the French Quarter and is forever getting into trouble with her friend, Ava, who owns the Juju Voodoo shop. New Orleans’ spooky above-ground cemeteries, jazz clubs, bayous, and Mardi Gras madness make their presence known here!
The Cackleberry Club Mysteries – set in Kindred, a fictional town in the Midwest. In a rehabbed Spur station, Suzanne, Toni, and Petra, three semi-desperate, forty-plus women have launched the Cackleberry Club. Eggs are the morning specialty here and this cozy cafe even offers a book nook and yarn shop. Business is good but murder could lead to the cafe’s undoing! This series offers recipes, knitting, cake decorating, and a dash of spirituality.
