Carol Andrews can’t believe her luck when her husband, Jim, surprises her with a second honeymoon trip to Florida. But there’s a catch—it’s really a business trip, not the romantic getaway Carol expects. Jim’s been called out of retirement to create a marketing plan for a new television game show aimed at Baby Boomers, The Second Honeymoon Game, and the pilot episode will be shot in the Sunshine State. The honeymoon is really over when the show’s executive producer, none other than Carol’s grammar school boyfriend, winds up dead on Carol and Jim’s first night in Florida. And their son, Mike, is the police’s number one suspect.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

We have gotten to know Carol and Jim Andrews pretty well with this being the 6th book in the series. I love the way Carol tells us the story and the way she talks to her dogs but also directly to the reader. It makes her more realistic. She is still her over-the-top self and just when I was starting to like her “beloved” husband Jim, he was back to his old self in this story, leaving Carol out of things and putting her off when she wanted to talk about their son Mike, who they don’t see often because he lives in Florida. I know it was a business trip, but it was also to be a second honeymoon for them. Everything changed when a the producer dies, but I think even without the dead body Jim would have been in full on work mode, definitely not thinking honeymoon in any way shape or form.

I was sailing through this book and really enjoying it, until yet again suicide becomes a topic. I reviewed a book last week that also triggered my grief a bit but was able to skim that minor part and continue to enjoy the story. This time is was a pivotal part to the story. It really was close to what our family went through and something I hope and pray the future doesn’t hold for us or anyone who loses a child to suicide goes through. I pushed on and finished the story but it was with a lot of tears.

Now if you are not facing a situation like I am, you would enjoy this story because Carol and Jim are quite a couple and some of their antics will have you laughing out loud. If you are a “baby boomer”, you will enjoy it even more. Susan Santangelo writes great stories full of wit and following Carol and her friends as they “investigate” never has a dull moment.

Cozy Wednesday with Terrie Farley Moran – Author of Read to Death – #Review / #Giveaway

cozy wednesday 2013 640
Welcome to Cozy Wednesday!
I am absolutely tickled to have Terrie Farley Moran visit us today!

terrie newI am delighted to be spending another Cozy Wednesday with all of you. Read to Death is the third cozy mystery novel in the Read ’Em and Eat series set in the sunny island community of Fort Myers Beach, Florida. Every winter season, the Cool Reads/Warm Climate Book Club gathers both local residents and snowbirds to mingle, drink sweet tea and talk about books. The season generally ends with a party of some sort and this year is no exception.

ftmyrsbch 031Read ’Em and Eat owners Sassy Cabot and Bridgy Mayfield have arranged for members of the book club to read The Florida Life of Thomas Edison by Michele Albion and then to take a trip off-island to visit the fabulous Edison and Ford Winter estates where Thomas Edison and Henry Ford spent their winters a hundred years ago.

Edison-Ford-Winter-Estate-OutsideTo insure the success of the trip, Sassy and Bridgy have rented a van and requested driver Oscar Frieland, who they know will engage in entertaining chatter with the club members. Sure enough, Oscar is both flirtatious and informative.

edison statueWith such splendid planning, the day is a huge success complete with a snack break next to a statue of Thomas Edison which stands under the largest Banyan tree in America. After arriving back at the Read ’Em and Eat, everyone gathers in the café for a brief book club meeting. Bridgy runs out to retrieve her sunglasses from the van only to discover Oscar’s dead body sprawled across the seat.

readtodeath1Although Lieutenant Frank Anthony of the Lee County Sheriff’s Department insists that Bridgy is a witness, not a suspect, Sassy is afraid that Bridgy’s status could change in an instant. She calls lawyer Owen Reston to come to Bridgy’s aid and then enlists reporter Cady Stanton to help her investigate Oscar’s life, past and present.
Bridgy’s mother, who is the flamboyant Ophelia’s sister Emelia arrives to comfort Bridgy but the sparks that fly between the sisters are anything but comforting. And the surprise guest that Emelia brings along with her is nothing short of spectacular.

So, open up a copy of Read to Death and get ready to spend a few hours at the beach, sipping sweet tea and nibbling on a Drunken Raisin Scone (recipe included) while solving a murder in the coziest town on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico.

~Terrie

At their seaside Read ‘Em and Eat bookstore café, Sassy Cabot and Bridgy Mayfield offer fresh scones, great books, and excellent detective work…

With their book club season wrapping up with The Florida Life of Thomas Edison, Sassy and Bridgy decide to take their group on a day trip to the beautiful Edison and Ford Winter Estates. Hiring driver Oscar Frieland, who’s known for his colorful stories  and love of the café’s Robert Frost fruit tartlets, the bibliophiles set off for a day of sunshine and history.

After a lovely excursion, the club returns to the café for lunch and a book discussion, but the group falls silent after Oscar is found dead in his van. The sheriff’s deputies have some questions of their own for the group, and if the ladies don’t find some answers soon, the next book they read might be from a prison library.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

The Cool Reads/Warm Climate Book Club goes on a field trip but it ends badly. The van driver, Oscar, is killed on the van after all the book club members have scurried off. Bridgy ends up finding his body when she returns to look for her missing sunglasses and that makes her the prime suspect for his death. Everyone knows she is innocent but the police don’t appear to be looking for other suspects. Before Bridgy is reading her books in a jail cell she and Sassy with the help of their friends do their best to find the real killer.

I have escaped right into all three books in this series. Sassy and Bridgy are fabulous characters and I wish the Read ‘Em and Eat bookstore café actually existed because I want to visit and meet them, Miguel, Ophie, and all the other characters that come through the doors. I really enjoy reading about the teenage book group and all the things they do.

The plot was terrific, just as I knew it would be. Plenty of suspects with plenty of twists. As each suspect was eliminated the focus kept returning to our Bridgy. When things seemed too dire Ophie always came to the rescue to brighten things up. Things were a little tense when her sister, Bridgy’s mom, came to town but Sassy’s mom came too and that helped to lift the tension. These women love to shop and you can’t stay mad when you are shopping.

Of course the setting was pure bliss and we get to see many different places as the girl’s investigation continued. We also traveled to some touristy spots to keep one certain mother out of Miguel’s kitchen.

An truly captivating cozy! Great characters with great relationships, an intriguing whodunit in a delightful setting! I can’t wait to return to the Read ‘Em and Eat!

I highly recommend the entire series!

On Flashback Fridays I will share with you the books I missed when they were first

So when I heard about the Sleuthing Women bundle that I posted about earlier today. I sorted through my To-Be-Read bookshelf. I knew I had Mary Kennedy’s Talk Radio Mysteries waiting not so patiently there. I grabbed the first one to read and share with you today!

When a psychologist hits Florida’s airwaves, there’s no telling who she’s reaching…

…and there’s no telling who wants to reach back.

Maggie left her clinical practice in Manhattan and moved to sunny Cypress Grove, Florida, where she became host of WYME’s “On the Couch with Maggie Walsh.” From co-dependent wives to fetish fiends, all the local crazies love her show.

Then threats start pouring in against one of the station’s special guests-self-styled new age prophet Guru Sanjay Gingii. When one of the threats becomes a deadly reality, Maggie’s new roommate, Lark, is surprisingly the prime suspect. Now, Maggie has to prove Lark innocent while dealing with a killer who needs more than just therapy…

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Talk radio is all my husband listens to but I don’t think he has ever tuned in to a program like “On the Couch with Maggie Walsh.” She gets some very unusual callers. First time and long time callers call in to talk about a variety of topics. She even has special guests like the controversial Guru Sanjay Gingii. He has his followers but he also has his enemies. Maggie has even received a threat at the station to scare her from having him on the show. Shortly after appearing on her show the guru is found dead in his hotel room. Maggie is surprised when the police show up at her door, but they are not there for her, they are there for her roommate, Lark.  What that’s crazy! Lark wouldn’t kill anyone or would she???

Mary Kennedy introduces us to a variety of characters. Maggie, of course, who seems to be a very intelligent woman but not a lot of common sense at times, which was funny in a book, wouldn’t be so funny in real life. Her roommate Lark has a past and Maggie finds out she didn’t know her as well as she thought. Her producer, Vera Mae Atkins, is a hoot, the first chapter is just the start of radio romp. The guru’s followers, staff, and exes make for a large pool of suspects. Maggie’s mom, Lola was my favorite character. She wanted to help Maggie investigate and she was crazy funny. Maggie is also trying to impress a certain detective which adds to the fun.

The radio show theme was unique for me. It did remind of the Frasier television show, his relationship with Roz was very similar to Maggie and Vera, only with a dead body added. The behind the scenes complete with a foreign receptionist who is learning English to a pompous sports announcer all blended together to make this a very interesting read.

The mystery plot was full of twists including the final one that was a total surprise. I was sure I had it all figured out and you guessed it, wrong again.

This was a good debut for this series. I want to see how these characters evolve in the next 2 books, Reel Murder and Stay Tuned for Murder.

On Houseboat Row by Lucy Burdette

IMG_0273Because the theme of this blog is “escaping” to read, I thought you might be interested in hearing—and seeing—more about where food critic Hayley Snow lives. She shares a houseboat on Houseboat Row with her octagenarian roommate, Miss Gloria.

IMG_0040Even though the characters and story in KILLER TAKEOUT are fictional, Houseboat Row really exists! Although this hodgepodge collection of boats sits on a busy corner (Palm Avenue and S. Roosevelt Blvd. for those who know Key West), once you step off the parking lot and onto the docks, the weight of the the world slides off your back. I imagine Hayley and Miss Gloria living on a little yellow one-story boat, with two bedrooms, a living area, and a galley kitchen. At the far end of the boat is a small deck where Miss Gloria grows tomatoes and herbs. At the other end, the deck is larger, big enough for a dining table and some chairs to lounge in and watch the world go by.

IMG_0045Many a dinner party has been thrown on the deck over the course of the series, and KILLER TAKEOUT is no exception. In fact, since the book takes place during the crazy, hectic Fantasy Fest week, Hayley and Miss Gloria retreat to their boat frequently, often joined by family and friends.

FullSizeRenderWe all hope you’ll enjoy your seventh visit to Key West and even imagine yourself as one of the neighbors…

It’s Fantasy Fest at Key West, and food critic Hayley Snow is ready to celebrate. But a killer seems intent on crashing the party. . .

Every year, Key West’s weeklong Mardi Gras–style festival has tourists and locals alike lining up for costumed revelry and delicious eats. Key Zest magazine has assigned Hayley to write a piece on the fest’s grab-and-go food, so she’s planning on hitting up the mobile eateries while checking out the party preparations.

Hayley’s office mate, Danielle, recently elected Queen of Fantasy Fest, is also buzzing between festivities and fundraisers.  But when a former royal rival gets taken out, Hayley needs to put down her party hat and her pen and figure out who served up a side of murder—before Danielle gets crowned a killer. . .

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Zombies, a hurricane, and murder! OH MY!! This story is “KILLER”!!!

Never a dull moment in Key West, but Halloween seems extra special. The week plus long event, Fantasy Fest, includes great food and drink, several events each day and costumes that are fun, scary, and some downright risqué.  Hayley Snow is right in the middle of it all. She is reviewing places that serve takeout for Key Zest. Everything from food trucks to restaurants. She is also covering and participating in several events.

Her coworker Danielle was elected Queen of Fantasy Fest after weeks of fundraising but she seems to have made an enemy. Another contestant is not taking her loss well and making Danielle miserable.

Hayley dons makeup to zombify herself and takes part in the Zombie Bicycle Ride. Alcohol, costume restraints, or lack of balance has zombies tumbling everywhere. One right by Hayley so she stops to help. It takes awhile but she realizes it is the woman that has been bullying Danielle. When she dies police think there may have been foul play and Danielle is their main suspect. Hayley quickly starts her own investigation.

Oh and in addition to that and work, her mother has arrived in Key West with her fiancé for their wedding, and Hurricane Margaret is brewing and Key West is in it’s path.

Lucy Burdette has filled these pages full. What a fantastic story!

All our favorite characters are back and Key West is full of tourists too. I absolutely love Miss Gloria. She is over 80 and Hayley has a hard time keeping up with her.  Hayley and Bransford’s romance has some bumps and there is some trouble at Key Zest, I really enjoyed all the dialogue. The characters continue to grow and even after 7 stories they are fresh and interesting. I would love to be friends with all of them.

The subplots entwine so comfortably with the main plot. Don’t interpret that to mean there is not excitement because there is plenty of that. I couldn’t believe how quickly I flew through this book. I couldn’t wait to see what happened next. It was after midnight and I kept telling myself just one more chapter, just one more chapter, and soon I was to the recipes.

Don’t miss this one! Pack your virtual bags and head to Key West and enjoy!! Be sure to send me a postcard (comment) telling me all about your trip!!

Synopsis

When Hayden Kent’s mentor and friend discovers her son Mike’s dead body, dressed in full scuba attire, washed up on Pigeon Key, she needs Hayden. Her paralegal and dive skills may help unravel the tragedy of Mike’s last days. He’d recently discovered a sunken Spanish galleon and rumors that he hit the mother lode ran through the Keys like wildfire.

Hayden’s dive on the treasure site uncovers gold, and clues that Mike’s death was something far more sinister than an accident. When two different wills, both signed the day Mike died, are delivered to the courthouse, the suspect list grows, as do the threats against her. The danger escalates as she tries to save herself, discover the motive, and find the killer.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

I don’t know why but so many books I have read since by son’s death last year seem to have a suicide element. Maybe they did before and I am just hypersensitive now or is this is a new thing? While it  did make me uncomfortable at first I know how cozy mysteries work.  I safely assumed the body found at the beginning of this story was not going to be a suicide death and dove right in with Hayden to investigate her friend’s son’s death.

When Mike Terry’s body is found by his mother she calls 911 but she also calls her friend, Hayden Kent.  At first it appears the young man took his own life but when paralegal Hayden starts to go through the process of probating his will several things come to light leading her to believe he was murdered. He had recently found a sunken ship that promised a major treasure and his relationship with his partners was pretty rocky at the time of his death. Hayden decides to investigate the wreckage herself and see if she can figure out why Mike Terry had to die.

Having recently read Kait Carson’s first book in the series Death By Blue Water, I couldn’t wait to read this book. Again the author’s descriptive style painted wonderful pictures in my mind both above the water and below. Whether scuba diving or dredging through piles of legal paperwork I was right there with Hayden searching for clues. At times we both seemed to be going in circles. Things just didn’t seem to go together and when they did I was absolutely in shock and dear Hayden almost met her demise.

This is the second book this month that gave me a whiplash type of an “aha moment”. I was like “What?” “No way!” “I never saw that one coming”. That last twist was so surprising I think I read the page 2 or 3 times before I decided, yup, that really happened.

I loved my virtual trips into the depths of the Florida Keys and realizing that even the water there gets colder in the winter. Seriously, I never thought about it before. But Florida cold and Wisconsin cold are totally two different things. For us northerners it would probably still considered warm dip into the deep blue water 🙂

Another great read from this author.

Paralegal Hayden Kent knows first-hand that life in the Florida Keys can change from perfect to perilous in a heartbeat. When she discovers a man’s body at 120’ beneath the sea, she thinks she is witness to a tragic accident. She becomes the prime suspect when the victim is revealed to be the brother of the man who recently jilted her, and she has no alibi. A migraine stole Hayden’s memory of the night of the death.

As the evidence mounts, she joins forces with Officer Janice Kirby. Together the two women follow the clues that uncover criminal activities at the highest levels and put Hayden’s life in jeopardy while she fights to stay free.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

I tried snorkeling once and didn’t do too well so I am sure there is no scuba diving in my future. I will settle for virtual scuba diving with Hayden. I could tell immediately that Kait Carson was an avid scuba diver just by the way she described Hayden’s underwater adventures. She vividly tells us about her descents and ascents into the water as well as her underwater exploration and finding a dead body in the hull of ship. True to the cozy genre Hayden becomes the main suspect.

We not only meet Hayden, we meet Cappy, the owner of the charter that takes her to her diving spots, her friend Mallory and the guy she just broke up with Kevin. Quite the jerk, in my opinion. His brother happens to be identified as the body in the ship and the plot starts to thicken. It also brings Coast Guard Officer Paul Mueller to the story. Before he even takes a dip in the water he tries to say what Hayden saw below was an a hallucination. I learned a new term “narked” (nitrogen narcosis). Apparently if you come up from the depths too fast it can cause more than the bends. It can cause a variety of issues including seeing things that aren’t there, but there really was a body down there. Now 3 agencies are trying to find a killer. The Coast Guard, Marine Patrol and the police. And of course Hayden. She finally wraps her head around that she is actually a suspect and uses her paralegal training to find things everyone else seems to be missing.

I found myself totally immersed into this story. The writing style just flows perfectly. Whether in the water or on dry land the characters were engaging and very believable. I really felt Hayden’s pain as things continued to be revealed about her relationship with Kevin. The victim’s wife was also a character easy to empathize with, she was caught in an untenable position.

The story took us into a hot topic that surprised me but I am not going to spoil anything. Again I learned something 🙂

I really enjoyed this story. The theme was something totally fresh and new and I found it both interesting and entertaining, I can’t wait to read Death by Sunken Treasure out March 22.

Shhh…in the newest hardcover in the national bestselling Dead-End Job Mystery series, Helen Hawthorne quietly goes undercover at a local library to search for a missing masterpiece.

Wealthy socialite Elizabeth Cateman Kingsley has hired Helen to find a missing John Singer Sargent painting, owned by her late father. After his death, many of Davis Cateman’s books were donated to the Flora Park library, and his daughter suspects the small watercolor—worth millions—was tucked away inside one of those dusty tomes.

To search the stacks, Helen applies for a position as a library volunteer and discovers the library director has a catalog of complaints—from a mischievous calico cat named Paris to the mysterious disappearance of various items that some of the more imaginative staff are attributing to a ghost haunting the building.

While her husband Phil sticks his neck out to find a missing necklace, Helen is on her own with no one to lend her a hand. When a dead body turns up in a parking lot, it appears someone is willing to go to any lengths to keep the treasure in the library quiet. Now Helen is bound and determined to find the killer as well as the painting—before she’s taken out of circulation herself.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Elaine Viets just continues to top herself.

In the 14th installment of this very popular series, Helen and Phil are working separate cases. Helen is working as a library volunteer while she search for a very high valued piece of artwork that may have been misplaced in a book donated to the library. Phil is trying to find a very expensive necklace and a golf cart that went missing during a party. Both seem like relatively simple jobs but both of filled with plenty of complications, including teenagers who don’t have a clue… a “ghost”….a dead body….and more.

This was a great read and thought provoking. Helen’s work at the library introduced us to some wealthy women who thought of nothing but themselves. We also met some homeless people who use the library as a refuge. Phil was working for more wealthy people but spent most of his time getting to know the hired help who seemed to get blamed for everything.  I truly enjoyed the twists in the story that showed people’s true colors.

All the characters that live at the Coronado Apartments have returned as well with a couple of additions. The Sunset Salute still takes place every evening by the pool so all the friends can catch up with a drink or two.

Now the settings were amazing. The Flora Park Library was a huge estate that was converted into a library. The Friends of the Library are trying to raise money to shore up the walls and floors to handle the weight of all the wonderful books it contains, otherwise a new library will need to be built without all the rich history of the current library. Phil’s job also takes place at a beautiful estate with a pool and anything else a person could want. And since there is snow on the ground in Wisconsin right now, Florida anywhere sounds delightful.

The reason I love this series is because the recurring characters are real and true to life. The new characters in each story all unique, some work their way into our hearts and some we would like to jump into the pages and slap across the face. Of course there are some that fall in between. Viets puts them all in believable situations and wraps them in mysteries where many become suspects. Trying to solve them before Helen and Phil is the fun part. Usually I figure it out the same time they do.

Each story can be read as a stand alone but you really should read the whole series for maximum enjoyment.

Review/Giveaway – Engaged in Danger by Barbara Venkataraman

engaged in dangerEngaged in Danger: A Jamie Quinn Mystery
4th in Series
Cozy Mystery
Setting – Florida
Self Published September 11, 2015
Print Length: 242 pages

Finally, life is good for reluctant family law attorney, Jamie Quinn–her father may get his visa soon, her boyfriend is the bomb, and her law practice is growing like crazy–but when she agrees to take on a high-profile divorce case, everything falls apart. What looked like an opportunity to work with her friend Grace and make some serious bucks has turned into a deadly game, one that could destroy their friendship and tear their town apart. Why couldn’t Jamie just leave well enough alone?

Dollycas’s Thoughts

I reviewed the first 3 books in this series back in July.  Engaged in Danger picks up where we left off and packs another huge punch. The other three were basically novellas that could be read together for 3 mysteries in the length of a regular novel. While we did get to know the characters, this one comes in at 242 pages and gives the author more time to let the plot develop and for us readers to become more wrapped up in the drama.

Nan Glasser wants a divorce and every law office has turned her way stating conflict of interest. Marvin Glasser is a real S.O.B. who has his fingers in way to many pies and that may be deadly. Nan just wants out and begs Jamie to take her case. With Kip in Australia for 3 months, a big case may be just what Jamie needs but she is smart enough to know she can’t do it on her own. After trying to get her friend Grace and her partners to take the case, it is decided that Jamie and Grace with an assist private investigator Duke, with take the case.  Then the mayhem begins as truths are revealed, and clues lead somewhere unexpected, and Jamie finds herself in a bit of hot water.

Barbara Venkataraman has given us another smart story with a very tight plot that just flows so effortlessly.

These characters a interesting and fun. Jamie is the underdog and I wanted to see her win. I just hated Marvin Glasser. He is manipulative and petty. He may have met his match in Jamie Quinn. I was also pretty upset with Kip. The relationship with Jamie is new and was crazy that he took off for 3 months with saying good-bye. He made up for it a little but he is not back in my good graces yet. Both Duke and Grace suffered some pitfalls too. The dialogue between them all was fantastic. Even in stressful situations there was room for a little humor.

Each of these stories is better than the last. Venkataraman just keeps topping herself. I hope she is busy working on #5.

Great Escapes Book Tour!

As soon as they finished reading Well Read, Then Dead, cozy readers began bombarding me with one question. “Now that the story is over, you’re not going to send Aunt Ophie back to Pinetta, are you?” Yeah right, as if I, or anyone else, could make Ophie do anything she doesn’t want to do. I mean, really?

So I wasn’t the least bit surprised when in the very first paragraph of Caught Read-Handed there was Ophie tapping her well-manicured fingernails and making demands. I may not have invited her back to the Read ’Em and Eat Café and Bookstore in idyllic Fort Myers Beach Florida, but I surely didn’t have the nerve to tell her she had to leave.

ftmyersbeachfort-myers-beach-sunset

CaughtReadHanded_newcomp.inddIn this second book of the Read ’Em and Eat series, Miguel Guerra is back in the kitchen whipping up tasty treats like Green Eggs and Ham, Harper Lee Hush Puppies and Miss Marple’s Orange Iced Scones. (The scone recipe was developed by Karen Owen and can be found in the back of Caught Read-Handed. TsconesMMo whet your appetite the finished product is pictured here.). And the food is still served on tables named for favorite authors, with bits and pieces of the authors work and a picture or two laminated on the table top. Care to have a seat at Robert Louis Stevenson, or is Dashiell Hammett more to your liking?

Ophie, complete with her trademark strappy high heeled sandals, has become a full time resident of the island community with a thriving consignment shop and a small bungalow of her own.

Sassy and Bridgy were thrilled to have their routine slip back to normal. But on a trip to the local library to donate books for a fundraiser, Sassy witnesses an argument between a loud, flashy woman and an uncommunicative man. He pushes his way out the door and right past Sassy to avoid confrontation. What was that about? She might have forgotten the entire episode, except that the man reminded her of an old friend. Within the next day or so, the woman is found murdered in her own hot tub and Sassy discovers that the wary man at the library is the brother of her old friend and has become the prime suspect in the murder. Seems to me the Read ’Em and Eat crowd is going to have to wait a while longer for normal.

If that is not enough chaos, Miguel is having difficulty focusing on his meticulous and delicious kitchen creations because he fears that his beloved Maine Coon cat, Bow, is in danger from the giant Anaconda snake that has made its way north from the Everglades and has been spotted swimming in Estero Bay. The community is of two minds as to what to do about the Anaconda. Some want it killed, others want it captured. It is a big clash for such a tiny island community.

So before I say goodbye, here are a couple of fun hints about what you can expect in Caught Read-Handed: 1. get ready for a change of Ophie’s foot gear when you least expect. 2. After this adventure, Sassy and Bridgy could easily call themselves the High in the Sky Detectives, still they prefer to remain the proprietors of the Read ’Em and Eat Café and Bookstore.

It is so great to talk to you all for a while. Now I am off to find a glass of sweet tea and a Miss Marple Orange Iced Scone. Happy reading.

From the national bestselling author of Well Read, Then Dead comes the second mystery featuring Sassy Cabot and Bridgy Mayfield, who bring Fort Myers Beach, Florida, residents plenty of sinful treats and killer reads at their bookstore café, Read ’Em and Eat.

Happy to help her fellow bibliophiles, Sassy visits the local library with book donations for their annual fundraising sale. Unfortunately, the welcoming readers’ haven is in turmoil as an argument erupts between an ornery patron and new staff member, Tanya Lipscombe—also known as “Tanya Trouble.” She may lack people skills, but everyone is shocked when she’s later found murdered in her own hot tub.

The man last seen arguing with Tanya is soon arrested. But Alan Mersky, a veteran with PTSD, happens to be the brother of Sassy’s former boss—and he’s no murderer. Now it’s up to Sassy and Bridgy to clear Alan’s name and make sure the real killer gets booked.

Includes a recipe for Miss Marple scones!

Dollycas’s Thoughts

So excited to return to the Read ‘Em and Eat Café! Sassy, Bridgy, Ophie and Miguel are back! This time a library volunteer is killed and we quickly see she was not a very nice person so there should be plenty of suspects but the police quickly hone in on a homeless veteran with PTSD, a man that looks very much like Sassy’s old boss, George Mersky.  Sassy contacts the man and finds out his brother, Alan is living in Florida. Sassy agrees to help the vet until his brother can get there to help. She enlists Bridgy to help her prove his innocence and find out who really killed “Tanya Trouble”.

Being back in Fort Myers Beach is like visiting old friends. Mary Sassafrass (“Sassy”) Cabot and Bridget (Bridgy) Mayfield are fabulous characters. They are girls after my own heart who love to read and eat and solve a mystery or two.  Ophie is a hoot and now has her own consignment shop. Miguel is back where he belongs, in the kitchen creating such wonderful delights. Jocelyn Randall is the pastor’s wife is always putting her foot in her mouth and only on her best behavior when the dear pastor is nearby. Through Pastor John we meet a fantastic group of veterans that rally to help their friend who has been wrongly accused. There is also a huge character that truly gave me pause. It seems there is an anaconda on the loose and poor Miguel is terrified his beautiful cat Bow will become its lunch.

Terrie Farley Moran has written a fantastic story. The characters are engaging. I especially like the wide variety of interesting people from the vets, to the ones that make up the book groups to tourists and residents that just stop by for a book or a meal. She a created a wonderful place for them to gather and enveloped them in a mystery that is very entertaining and just pure fun to read.

As I stated in my review of Well Read, Then Dead, the Read ‘Em and Eat sounds like a perfect escape if you ask me. If it were a real place I would pack my bags and leave today!
