It’s October in Cobble Cove, and Alicia is busy preparing for the library’s Halloween party when she learns that John’s aunt from Florida has died and that John’s cousins and their spouses are coming to town to bury their mother. The day after the funeral, the caretaker’s son is found dead by John’s grandfather’s gravestone, from a blow on the head. The only witness seems to be Sneaky the library cat, who, having left the library, turned up at Alicia’s door with blood and dirt on him.

As Alicia, Gilly, and Sheriff Ramsay investigate, a generation of family secrets is uncovered. Are one of the guests staying at the inn a killer? Will the humans solve the crime, and can Sneaky, Kittykai, and Salem, the inn’s guest cat, team up to help?

Welcome, Debbie!

Tell us a little bit about yourself.

I’m a librarian at a public library on Long Island. I have a teenage daughter, husband, and 3 cats. I have published 8 novels including the five books of my Cobble Cove cozy mystery series. I’ve also published short stories of various genres. In addition, I write articles for pet magazines and am a reviewer for Booklist.

What is the first book you remember reading?

I’ve been a lifelong reader, but the first book that made an impression on me was The Winter People by Phyllis Whitney. I was around 12 or 13 when I received this book as a gift. It was my first introduction to gothic mysteries, and I read everything by this author afterward. I learned she was a local author and even wrote a letter to her expressing my interest in writing that I had even then. She replied but, unfortunately, the letter was lost after I got married and moved. I’m still hoping it will turn up one day. The author is now deceased, but she lived a long life and was writing into her 90’s.

What are you reading now?

I’m reviewing a cozy mystery for Booklist. It’s the debut book of a series called Meet Isabel Puddles by M.V. Byrne. I’m not given a choice of books to review, but I’m happy to learn of new authors. Occasionally, I am asked to review a book by an author with whom I’m familiar. For instance, I recently reviewed Joanne Fluke’s Christmas Cupcake Murder and that was an honor for me because she’s one of my favorite cozy authors.

What books have most inspired you?

As I said earlier, Phyllis Whitney’s romantic suspense novels inspired me as a teen, as did Victoria Holt’s writings. Later, I enjoyed cozy mysteries featuring cat characters that were written by Carole Nelson Douglas (Midnight Louise series); Shirley Murphy (Joe Grey series); Lillian Jackson Braun (The Cat Who series) and others. I also had the pleasure of meeting some of these authors when I attended the Cat Writers’ Association conference years ago. Today, I’m inspired by a variety of authors. I mostly enjoy reading mystery and suspense novels, but I also like books of other genres from historical fiction to science fiction/paranormal titles. Some of my favorite authors include Nora Roberts (and her futuristic mystery series written under J.D. Robb), Mary Higgins Clark, and Sandra Brown. My current new favorite authors are Fiona Davis, JoJo Moyes, Ruth Ware, Lucy Foley, and Kimberly McCreight.

What made you decide you wanted to write mysteries?

I’ve always enjoyed reading them. I like to create puzzles and figure out solutions to them. I sometimes surprise myself by the twists I feature in my books and the endings.

Where do the ideas for your books come from?

Everywhere – other books, TV shows, my past life experiences, my dreams, current events, my imagination.

Is there anything about writing you find most challenging?

Finding the time to write and also promote my writing. I work full-time as a librarian and have a family, so I need to juggle and balance my responsibilities. It can be stressful, especially the promotional part which seems to take up more time the more books I publish. I enjoy writing but wish I could devote more time to it.

What do you think makes a good story?

Interesting characters and a plot that inspires you to keep reading. I like stories that feature twists or unexpected events, vivid descriptions of settings and places, and subplots that help illustrate the inner feelings and personalities of the characters involved.

Which, of all your characters, do you think is the most like you?

Alicia, the main character of my Cobble Cove cozy mystery series. She’s a librarian and also a mystery author. She’s also very cautious despite the fact she enjoys solving mysteries.

What makes your books different from others out there in this genre?

I don’t believe many cozies feature married couples with children. I also include characters of various ages from kids to seniors and, in each book, new characters are introduced who may or may not remain in the series. The main characters develop and grow from book to book. I’ve also made a change in the cats. In the first four books, readers are not privy to Sneaky, the main character cat’s thoughts. But when I wrote the two short eBooks that followed, Sneaky’s Christmas Mystery (that won an award from the Cat Writers’ Association) and Sneaky’s Summer Mystery, I included Sneaky’s thoughts as well as those of Kittykai (the female cat that joined the series in Love on the Rocks).

What’s next on the horizon for you?

I’ll be publishing my first non-fiction book, Pet Posts: The Cat Chats. The idea came to me when I was home during the pandemic and cleaning out my files. I found a bunch of old cat articles “written” by two of my past cats. Since I already publish blog posts written in the points-of-view of my current cats, I decided to compile this into a book with photos. With the help of a fellow Cat Writers’ Association member who is an editor and publisher, the book should be released this fall. It’s possible it may even be out by the time this interview is printed.

As for my fiction, I like to alternate my cozy mystery series with my standalone mysteries, so I’m considering returning to a book that I started a while back and completing it. That book has a gothic mystery theme. I also want to write more Cobble Cove books. However, I’m also querying the first of a new cozy mystery to agents in the hope that I can publish with a large publisher one day, so my books can reach a bigger audience. For now, I’m happy that I have two wonderful Indie publishers, Solstice Publishing and Next Chapter Publishing.

High summer in River Bluffs, Indiana, is always sweltering and sweet. But the heat is really on when a decidedly dead body turns up in the neighborhood.

When established house flippers Jazzi Zanders and her cousin Jerod donate a week’s worth of remodeling work to Jazzi’s sister Olivia, they’re expecting nothing more than back-breaking roofing work and cold beers at the end of each long, hot day. With Jazzi’s live-in boyfriend and partner Ansel on the team, it promises to be a quick break before starting their next big project—until Leo, an elderly neighbor of Olivia’s, unexpectedly goes missing . . .

When the friendly senior’s dog tugs Jazzi and the guys toward the wetlands beyond Olivia’s neighborhood, they stumble across a decomposing corpse—and a lot of questions. With Jazzi’s pal Detective Gaff along to investigate, Jazzi finds her hands full of a whole new mystery instead of the usual hammer and nails. And this time it will take some sophisticated sleuthing to track down the culprit of the deadly crime—before the killer turns on her next . . .

A wonderful second book with a cracking cast of characters, this is a series to read and re-read.
~A Wytch’s Book Review Blog

Cozies have lots of characters, Some central to the story and some secondary ones that make the story more genuine. I swear I recognize some of them. There were some fun ones in this mystery. And the author did a wonderful job of bringing them to life, helping me to connect with them, even the ones that had died my nefarious means.

An exploding Mardi Gras float has got to be the strangest murder weapon scrappy sleuth Carmela Bertrand has ever encountered in this latest Scrapbooking Mystery from the New York Times bestselling author.

It’s Mardi Gras in New Orleans and scrapbook shop owner Carmela Bertrand is excited to be attending the Pluvius Parade along with her best friend Ava. Carmela’s ex-husband Shamus rides by the duo on his float at the head of the parade, when suddenly the revelry turns to disaster. Shamus’ float crashes and explodes, and although Shamus escapes unhurt, a member of his krewe is killed.

Carmela and Ava plunge into an investigation of the krewe-member’s death, but as they dig deeper it starts to look less like an accident and more like a murder….and Shamus seems less like a victim, and more like a suspect.

I found Glitter Bomb to be well-written with a fast pace. Carmela and Ava are a hoot. I enjoy their witty repartee. Ava and Carmela do not let grass grow under their feet on this investigation.

About The Authors

Laura Childs is the New York Times bestselling author of the Tea Shop Mysteries, Scrapbook Mysteries, and Cackleberry Club Mysteries. In her previous life she was CEO/Creative Director of her own marketing firm and authored several screenplays. She is married to a professor of Chinese art history, loves to travel, rides horses, enjoys fundraising for various non-profits, and has two Chinese Shar-Pei dogs.

Laura specializes in cozy mysteries that have the pace of a thriller (a thrillzy!) Her three series are:

The Tea Shop Mysteries – set in the historic district of Charleston and featuring Theodosia Browning, owner of the Indigo Tea Shop. Theodosia is a savvy entrepreneur, and pet mom to service dog Earl Grey. She’s also an intelligent, focused amateur sleuth who doesn’t rely on coincidences or inept police work to solve crimes. This charming series is highly atmospheric and rife with the history and mystery that is Charleston.

The Scrapbooking Mysteries – a slightly edgier series that take place in New Orleans. The main character, Carmela, owns Memory Mine scrapbooking shop in the French Quarter and is forever getting into trouble with her friend, Ava, who owns the Juju Voodoo shop. New Orleans’ spooky above-ground cemeteries, jazz clubs, bayous, and Mardi Gras madness make their presence known here!

The Cackleberry Club Mysteries – set in Kindred, a fictional town in the Midwest. In a rehabbed Spur station, Suzanne, Toni, and Petra, three semi-desperate, forty-plus women have launched the Cackleberry Club. Eggs are the morning specialty here and this cozy cafe even offers a book nook and yarn shop. Business is good but murder could lead to the cafe’s undoing! This series offers recipes, knitting, cake decorating, and a dash of spirituality.

A Pain in the Tuchis
by Mark Reutlinger

A relaxing cozy mystery as comfortable as a warm knitted shawl on a cold winter night…

It is a treat to read about Rose and Ida as they sleuth — making a list of suspects, working out the motives and opportunities — always keeping in mind WWSD (What would Sherlock do?).

A Mrs. Kaplan Mystery

2nd in Series
Cozy Mystery
Publisher: Alibi (November 17, 2015)
An Imprint of Random House LLC
Publication Date: November 17, 2015

Combining the classic charms of Agatha Christie with the delightful humor of M. C. Beaton’s Agatha Raisin novels, Mark Reutlinger’s Mrs. Kaplan mystery series returns as a notorious crank meets an untimely fate.

Yom Kippur is a day of reflection and soul searching. But at the Julius and Rebecca Cohen Home for Jewish Seniors, Vera Gold misses this opportunity to atone for her many sins when she up and dies. Indeed, Vera was such a pain in the tuchis to all those around her that when her sister claims Vera was deliberately poisoned, the tough question isn’t who would want to kill her—but who wouldn’t?

Having already solved one murder with her dear friend Ida, Rose Kaplan has a sleuthing reputation that precedes her. It’s only natural that Vera’s sister turns to Mrs. K for help. So do the police, but when her conclusions conflict with theirs, they tell her to butt out! This case has more twists than a loaf of challah. And with a homicidal scoundrel on the loose, Mrs. K has to act fast—or she might be the guest of honor at the Home’s next memorial service.

Praise for Mrs. Kaplan and the Matzoh Ball of Death

“Is there kosher food in jail? These two heroines have gotten themselves in quite a pickle! Well, it’s a matzoh ball mess, really. Too deliciously funny!”—Rita Mae Brown, bestselling author of Nine Lives to Die

Dying Before “I Do”
by Judy Fitzwater

There are a lot (a LOT) of interwoven character relationships in Dying Before “I Do”, and by that I mean people who have personal and/or professional pasts with each other. It adds subtle yet rich layers to the story (think filo dough in baklava – my favorite!), and are introduced at a rate that with enough support that they keep the story flow going.

Professor Lexie Driscoll is leading a Golden Age of Mystery book club discussion of Josephine Tey’s novels, when her sister arrives in a state of agitation. The sisters aren’t close, and Lexie wonders why Gayle has driven from Utah to Long Island to stay with her. The following morning, Gayle awakens Lexie to say there’s a dead man lying in her backyard. Gayle confesses she’s on the run because she witnessed a murder and the murderer is out to get her. Gayle takes off after begging Lexie not to tell the police she’s been there. This presents a problem because Lexie’s boyfriend, homicide detective Brian Donovan, is initially put in charge of the investigation. The murder victim turns out to be a minor criminal suspected of having burgled several homes in the area. Lexie wonders if her sister killed the man, believing he was sent to kill her.

Lexie and her friend Joy Lincoln, a former FBI agent and now a stay-at-home mom, soon discover that all of the book club members either have secrets or are in situations involving the wrong side of the law. An older couple, Marge and Evan Billings, are at the mercy of the criminals they’ve hired to extricate their young granddaughter from Peru. Tim Draigon has lost his attorney’s license for illegal activities. He and Sadie Lu, a guidance counselor, owe money and have borrowed large sums from money lenders connected to the murdered man. Lexie’s neighbors, the Roberts sisters, are strange birds. Corinne dominates her slow sister, Felicity, and berates Lexie whenever she comes to Felicity’s aid. And who is this Johnny Scarvino Felicity fears? Another club member is murdered, one is knocked unconscious, and old and new secrets impact the lives of the members of the book club. Lexie must find the murderer before more lives are destroyed.

Nina Bannister loves to paint, and she thinks her hobby is painless enough. But she is wrong. Her love of doing seascapes leads to a friendship with a young ex docent from The Chicago Art Museum–and to their entry into the murky and dangerous world of international art smuggling.

Can she save her young friend, who has been kidnapped to the mountains of southern Austria? Can she determine the identity and motives of the mysterious Red Claw? Can she see the real painting that is hidden beneath the false one?

Her success in these matters–indeed her very survival–depend on her ability to perform a last ditch Frame Change!

Halloween in Crystal Cove, California, is a big deal, involving a spooky soiree where the Winsome Witches, a fund-raising group, gather to open up their purse strings and trade superstitions. But party magicians, fortune-tellers, and herbalists are only the beginning of this recipe for disaster…

Jenna Hart has packed The Cookbook Nook chock-full of everything from ghostly texts to witchy potions in anticipation of the annual fund-raiser luncheon. But there’s one unexpected addition to the menu: murder.

When the Head Priestess of the Winsome Witches is found dead under mysterious circumstances, there’s no logical answer and plenty of blame to go around. With her aunt, Vera, unable to call on her ability to foresee the future, Jenna will have to use more than just sleight of hand and a few magic tricks to conjure up the truth…

Dollycas’s Thoughts

It is Halloween in Crystal Cove so things are a lot witchier than normal. Plus Aunt Vera intuitive powers are on the fritz so that makes things even more interesting.

Daryl Wood Gerber has written a very bewitching mystery and of course Jenna is right in the middle of it. The problem is there are so many suspects that Jenna is following so many leads and putting herself in danger. The story has so many twists I figured everything all out the same time Jenna did. Isn’t that the way it is meant to be? Love it!!

The romance of Rhett and Jenna seems to be heading in the right direction and as usual Gerber stirs the perfect amount of humor into the plot. This installment also has much more witchcraft elements than the first two books but it is Halloween and that is the time spread all the superstitious and paranormal elements around.

You really can’t go wrong with a cozy by this author whether she is writing as Daryl Wood Gerber or Avery Aames. All her stories are completely captivating and very entertaining.

Running “errands” for her mob-boss employer, Joey “The Knife” Manetto, often ends with Shelby in trouble, making her cautious about continuing her association with him. Instead, she focuses on a new client who hires Shelby to find her missing mother. What seems like a routine case turns into something more sinister and deadly than she ever imagined.

In the meantime, Uncle Joey has summoned Shelby to his office, where she runs into her former nemesis. Shelby inadvertently hears something that makes her fear for the lives of Uncle Joey and his hit-man, Ramos. This time, Uncle Joey is not sure he wants to involve Shelby in something he knows could get her killed. As her investigation unfolds, Shelby finds death at every turn, and soon realizes she is in over her head. Can she escape from danger in time? Or will she find herself deep in death?
