Winter is leaving the residents of Glenkillen snowbound, but Eden isn’t about to let the weather dampen her spirits. With only a little time left in Scotland, she’s determined to make the most of it—starting with attending a fancy whisky tasting with local looker Leith Cameron. But her classy date turns into a major party foul after a woman is found drowned in one of the vats of alcohol.

Eden immediately steps in as a Special Constable to help solve the case, but her investigation turns sour when she realizes that the killer could be somehow connected to her own Scottish heritage. Now, in order to find the proof she needs to put the murderer behind bars, she’ll have to take a shot at unearthing her family’s past—before she herself winds up buried…

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Author Eden Elliott’s time in Glenkillen, Scotland is drawing to close. She has been invited to a whisky tasting with Leith Cameron. The date totally goes off track when a body is found in a vat during a tour of the warehouse. Eden is called upon in her Special Constable status to work the case. When the investigation leads to a bit of her own heritage she and others believe she could be in danger. To solve the crime secrets may be revealed, secrets Eden had wished would stay secret.

Hannah Reed has given us another fantastic story. A story that goes full circle as many secrets are revealed – Secrets of Eden’s family and secrets about her journey to the Scottish Highlands.

Eden is a wonderful character. She has embraced her time in Scotland meeting new people and trying new things. Yes, she may have distant relatives there but that was not her purpose in coming. She wanted to write the best stories she could, set in the highlands and when her best friend suggested she go there she knew it was the right decision. Eden has grown so much since she has arrived. She is much more confident and that shows in her daily life and in her her writing.

All the characters the author gives us are unique and realistic. The imagery she has created with her words makes the area come alive. Picturing the winter days there was so easy.

The story had such a great flow, not too slow, not too fast, just right. There were plenty of twists and some puzzling clues.

Each story in this series takes us off on a fabulous adventure. The characters are so appealing, I love the lilt of the language and the humor sprinkled throughout. I will never get to actually travel to Scotland but Hannah Reed has transported me there virtually three times and I hope she gets the chance to take us back there again soon.

Each story reads well as a stand alone, but for maximum enjoyment you need to escape into all three.

In national bestselling author Hannah Reed’s latest Scottish Highlands mystery, aspiring romance novelist Eden Elliott discovers the landscape isn’t the only thing that’s dramatic when a local woman is done in…

It’s early September in Glenkillen, Scotland, when American expat (and budding romance novelist) Eden Elliott is recruited by the local inspector to act as a special constable. Fortunately it’s in name only, since not much happens in Glenkillen.

For now Eden has her hands full with other things: preparing for the sheepdog trial on the MacBride farm—a fundraiser for the local hospice—and helping her friend Vicki with her first yarn club skein-of-the-month deliveries. Everything seems to be coming together—until the head of the welcoming committee is found strangled to death with a club member’s yarn.

Now Eden feels compelled to honor her commitment as constable and herd together the clues, figure out which ones are dogs, and which ones will lead to a ruthless killer…

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Author Eden Elliott is settling in on her Scottish adventure.  She is helping her friend Vicki with her yarn club and she is also volunteering at the local fundraiser to benefit a hospice facility. She is totally surprised when Inspector Jamieson asks her to become a special constable. Sure she helped solve the murder of the sheep shearer that put Glenkillen “Off Kilter” but that type of thing doesn’t happen too often around here. But before her warrant card even gets a crease the cantankerous head of the fundraiser welcoming committee is found strangled with some of her friend Vicki’s yarn. Well she is now authorized to snoop and snoop she does.

Hannah Reed has penned quite an escape. I have never been anywhere near the Scottish Highlands but her words transport me there in an instant. Whether the sun is shining or storms are rumbling through  I could “see and feel” exactly what Eden was, the descriptions are sensational.

She has also created characters that are unique. Some are aggravating and others are endearing,  and Eden does her best to be friendly with them all. She also uses a few of them for inspiration for her romance novels. Book 1 is complete and she starting to plan the 2nd as she is about halfway though her time in Scotland. The romantic relationship between Eden and a certain fishing guide is just starting to get interesting. I am excited to see how that develops.

The mystery itself was very well plotted with some nice twists. It is nice to see the protag working in tandem with local law enforcement. Eden makes a much better constable that dear misguided Sean.

You can tell the author has done her research to bring this story to life. I was totally captivating from the moment I started to the last word.

cozy wednesday 2013 640Welcome to Cozy Wednesday!

Today I am so excited to welcome Wisconsin Author Hannah Read!
Her new series is off to a fantastic start with

Off Kilter (A Scottish Highlands Mystery).

Hannah Reed pic

The Call of the Highlands
By Hannah Reed

9780425265826_large_Off_KilterIt began as ideas often do, with a small spark out of the blue. Most flashes of insight (also known as moments of insane thinking) sputter and die a quick death. As they should. But sometimes one will ignite and take off, and there’s nothing you can do but go along for the ride. That’s what happened with my new Scottish Highlands mystery series. Once those thoughts came alive and were in motion, I wouldn’t have been able to douse them even if I had an ocean of water. They had to be written.

Mostly, I credit one of my more colorful ancestors, who managed to get thrown out of Scotland in 1685 after his capture and imprisonment in Dunnottar Castle for taking up arms against the king. These days the castle still exists as a ruin, sitting high on a windswept hill beside the sea. This character survived when many didn’t and was shipped to the new world. A real rabble-rouser, that one. Not an uncommon trait in my family line. I believe his adventure was the inspiration for this new series. It fueled my imagination.

And although the weapons have changed in the time that has elapsed between then and now, motives for murder remain the same.

So back to the present and a wee bit about Off Kilter .

Romance writer Eden Elliott arrives in the Highlands only to discover that the local sheep shearer has been clipped with his own shears. She better figure out the motive for his murder and the person behind the deed before she finds herself on the receiving end of more shear terror!

I hope you enjoy your romp through the ‘blades’ of the Highland’s slippery slopes. I know I did.

After the recent death of her mother and the dissolution of her marriage, thirty-something Eden Elliott is seriously in need of a fresh start. At the urging of her best friend, bestselling author Ami Pederson, Eden decides to embark on an open-ended trip to the picturesque village of Glenkillen in the Scottish Highlands, to do some hands-on research for a book of her own. But almost as soon as Eden arrives in the quaint town, she gets caught up in a very real drama…

The town’s sheep shearer is found murdered—clipped with his own shears—and the locals suspect Vicki MacBride, an outsider whose father’s recent death left her the surprise heir to his lucrative sheep farm. Eden refuses to believe the affable heiress is a murderer, but can she prove that someone is out to frame her new friend before she finds herself on the receiving end of more shear terror?

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Are you ready to escape to Scotland? Hannah Reed has created a wonderful protagonist to take us there. Eden Elliot needs a change. Her husband was a real jerk and losing a mom is just devastating. Her friend Ami has done something extraordinary by sending her to Scotland to not only do research for a book to find herself and help her realize that there are better times ahead.  Of course finding a dead body definitely puts the entire trip Off Kilter.

On the plane she meets Vicki MacBride and this lady draws Eden right into the middle of her family’s dysfunction. Her half siblings are not happy to see her or know that she has Eden as a friend. Even though that friendship is very new Eden does not back away when the going gets tough. She believes her friend is innocent and is going to prove it.

Reed has set the story in the Scottish Highlands and her vivid descriptions make it easy to imagine the beauty. From the lush green grasses to the purple hues of the heather – The sheep roaming the hillsides and the border collies herding them together – the food and the locally made wool products. They are all featured to make the reader feel right there enjoying our getaway right along with Eden.

The characters are unique and they are so easy to get to know. Hard to believe this is just the first book in the series. I love Eden and her growing relationship with mystery writer Leith. He will be a great inspiration for her romance novel.  I was also so impressed with the way Eden works with the local detective and his wayward volunteer sidekick. Inspector Jamieson is a smart man and quickly realizes Eden is a great resource especially since his Auxiliary officer is not much help and has a lot to learn.

There is a also a wee bit of humor throughout the entire story. Most as Eden learns to drive a vehicle with manual transmission with the driver seat on the wrong side of the car, operating it on the opposite side of the road, and having to maneuver those crazy roundabouts! Thankfully Leith has a fantastic sense of humor and plenty of patience to help her learn the Scottish way of doing things.

I found this tale very refreshing, like a breath of fresh air. The town was very welcoming to Eden. The lilt of the language and the kilts the people wear along with a beautiful backdrop added to a very well thought out mystery made me love this book. I am not ready to try the haggis or the blood pudding but I absolutely cannot wait for my next visit to Glenkillen and the next mystery in this series.

Welcome to Moraine, Wisconsin. Home of Story Fischer’s market, The Wild Clover, and the Country Delight Farm. Tourists flock to the area for apple cider, caramel apples, Story’s honey products and the Country Delight Farm’s corn maze.

There is also a new resident moving to town. Dyanna Crane has moved in next door to Story and Hunter. She seems nice enough but when the neighbors find out she is a witch and the rest of her coven arrives to work their magic to protect Dyanna’s new home from evil spirits things start to spiral out of control. Police Chief Johnny Jay shows up to shut the ritual down and send the witches on their way not knowing they just happen to be camping out at the Country Delight Farm. In the morning one of the witches is found dead in the corn maze. Evil is definitely lurking and Story is ready to comb through all the clues to catch the killer.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

I was totally Beewitched by this story.

There was so much going on. In addition to the witch invasion Story’s mom is getting married and is a total Bridezilla. She has kept Story out of any of the planning. Her other daughter, Holly, is her wedding planner and Story’s only job is show up at the wedding and wear the hideous dress her mother has picked out for the bridesmaids. While this truly has hurt Story’s feeling she has enough on her plate to keep her busy. Business at the store has been good. Her mother has been to busy with wedding plans to create her usual havoc there. Then there all these witches in town. Even one named Tabitha. Both Hunter and Johnny Jay tell Story to keep her nose out of the investigation but she just can’t and she does have a way of getting information out of people.

Hannah Reed has written a wonderful story. The fact that this fictional town is almost in my backyard just sweetens the mystery. References to actual places always makes me smile. The characters could be my neighbors. Even P.P. Patty. Oh my word, she was so over the top in this story. My stomach hurt from laughing so hard. You will not believe what she does!!

Reasons to read Hannah Reed Mysteries:

  • Awesome characters
  • Wonderful setting
  • Smart and witty dialogue
  • Captivating mystery
  • Fantastic humor
  • Fun and entertaining

You cannot go wrong with any of her stories. She is the Queen Bee of Cozy Mysteries!!!!

Beeline to Trouble

Folks in Moraine, Wisconsin, are buzzing about the latest swarm of trouble humming around Story Fischer…
Story’s sister Holly needs help. Her husband has invited some of his employees to their house to relax for the weekend. Now she not only has to find ways to entertain them but also feed them. The kitchen in Holly’s house is state or the art but it is foreign territory as she can’t cook at all. With Story’s help they pull off breakfast and then Story takes them on a tour of her hives. They are enjoying themselves until one of the guests drops dead and Story becomes the prime suspect. It seems the carrot juice she served at breakfast contained poison.

This is the last thing Story needs. Johnny Jay can’t stand her and he will try to pin this on her for sure. Plus her hunky boyfriend Hunter just moved into her house with her and a dead body can tend to take away that romantic feeling.  She has no choice but to comb through the clues and close the case herself.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

The Queen Bee of the cozy is back again with another tale that is as sweet as honey! I love it!

If this fictional town were real it would be about a 45 minute drive from my house. I love the way Wisconsin shines in these stories from our crazy names of our “tongue twisting burgs”

  • Oconomowoc (Og-con-uh-ma-walk)
  • Waukesha (Walk-ee-shaw)
  • Kaukauna (Ka-caw-nah)
  • Chenequa (Sha-ni-qua)

to the beautiful scenery and the caring people. Each and every character is unique, real and believable, even the bad ones.  Pity Party Patty just cracks me up and she was in the middle of it this time. Even with her unusual past, deep down we all have a P.P. Patty in our lives.

Hannah Reed writes a smart mystery with the perfect amount of humor set is a place that is a beehive of activity.

Bee smart and buzz over to the bookstore and pick this one up today. You will Bee thanking me!!! BUZZ! BUZZ! BUZZ!

One of the first things I learned when I started blogging was that Hannah Reed and her alter ego Deb Baker are from Wisconsin. I quickly reached out to her and she was the very first author to guest post on Dollycas’s Thoughts. Since then I have become huge fan. I am so happy she is here today to tell us about the next Queen Bee Mystery.

Welcome Hannah!

Hi Everyone!

“Write What You Know,” the writing coaches tell us.

But I wanted to write mysteries, and I didn’t know a single thing about killing – I’m not a murderess, or in law enforcement, or a medical examiner. I don’t have a degree in criminal law, and I certainly am not acquainted with any serial killers, so interviewing bad guys was out. The victims weren’t talking, either (obviously).

After a lot of internal debate over my lack of qualifications, I decided to really write what I knew. And what I had experience with was small town Wisconsin. Plus, I’d married into a family business, and let me tell you, that turned out to be quite an awakening.

I also realized early on that I love sassy, unusual characters and fun romps and delving into family dynamics, all mixed with a twinkle of the outrageous and a bit of humor.

Enter Story Fischer, living in her hometown of Moraine, Wisconsin, a novice beekeeper, owner of The Wild Clover, the only local grocery store. Add an overbearing mother, a sister and cousin who work at the store, and a snoopy neighbor. Whip in a hot cop with a K-9 partner, plenty of gossip going around, and the dark side of human nature. Ta da. A winning recipe for murder and mayhem.

Book 3 in the series, Plan Bee, came out early this month. Appropriately titled, since when was the last time Plan A really worked? Never, that’s when.

Hope you enjoy it.

~Hannah

Thanks Hannah for stopping by.

About This Author
Hannah Reed is the pen name of author Deb Baker.

As Deb (her real name) she has authored The Gertie Johnson Backwoods Adventures and The Dolls To Die For Series.

In her youth, Deb dreamed of working as a private investigator or as an undercover cop. So when Deb began writing a new series, the Queen Bee mysteries, she did something she always wanted to do — she went undercover with an alias!

Hannah was one of her all-time favorite names. Reed was her great-grandmother’s maiden name. So she put the two together.

As it turns out, the author Hannah Reed is much younger than Deb Baker. She’s also more daring, more willing to step right into the midst of any sticky situation, and she’s not afraid to tell it like it is.

As Deb says, “Look out! When Hannah’s around, big trouble is sure to follow.”

It’s time for the Harmony Festival in Moraine, Wisconsin. All the shopkeepers are setting up outdoor displays, there will be a parade and even a Honey Queen. Story is none to happy with this year’s queen but there are other things for her to worry about, like a 12 year old whose is experimenting creating explosives, her mother’s new boyfriend and an out-of-towner trying to reap the benefits of the home town festival.

Then there’s that darn disappearing body, she tripped over it in the cemetery, but by the time help arrives the body is gone. It then turns up in a most unusual spot and when his identity is revealed Story realizes there are even more things she needs to worry about. The search for the truth “bee-comes” very interesting and danger could “bee” lurking around every corner.

Dollycas’s Thoughts
I love this series.

Hannah Reed definitely writes what she knows. She crafts an wonderful intelligent cozy mystery without a flaw. The characters are all unique and absolutely extraordinary. Each and every one will make a beeline right into your heart, even the characters we love to hate. I grow to love each one a little more with every page in this wonderful series. They never fail to put a smile on my face.

Mystery and mayhem are blended together to give us a honey of a story for our minds to enjoy. Reed is definitely the Queen Bee when it comes to cozy mystery.
