Wishcrafter Darcy Merriweather’s enchanted wedding plans are put to the test when murder invites itself to her bridal luncheon…

The Enchanted Village always has a touch of magic about it, but the buzz of excitement over the wedding between wish-granting witch Darcy and Police Chief Nick Sawyer is positively electric. With every spellbinding detail planned to perfection all that’s left is to sit back and let wishes come true. But Darcy’s dream wedding is threatened when the Divinitea Cottage, the tea room hosting her bridal luncheon, goes up in flames, revealing the strangled body of the owner, Leyna Noble.

Making vows to solve the crime without delaying the nuptials, Darcy focuses on her prime suspect, and number one nemesis, wicked witch Dorothy Hansel Dewitt, a notorious firebug. But when a psychic vanishes without a trace, Darcy’s investigation shifts to Leyna’s mysteriously bewitching past. Darcy must sort through mystical claims and old, vengeful grudges to find a killer before she is forced to forever hold her peace.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Wedding bells will soon be ringing for wishcrafter Darcy Merriweather and Police Chief Nick Sawyer and almost everyone in the Enchanted Village is excited about it. Someone set fire to the Divinitea Cottage Tea Room minutes before Darcy arrived for her bridal luncheon. Sadly, the owner Leyna Noble did not make it out alive, but it wasn’t the smoke or fire that did her in. She was strangled!

Darcy’s prime suspect is Dorothy Hansel Dewitt, a truly wicked witch and fire is her modus operandi. Of course, Leyna is new to the village, so there may be other suspects. When a psychic who was part of Leyna’s past vanishes Darcy decides to broaden the investigation even though Dorothy’s behavior is not doing her any favors.

Secrets! That is the theme of this story. Secrets that will truly change lives.

Reading this story was truly bittersweet as it is the last book in the series. Author Heather Blake’s very memorable characters take readers on an enchanted final journey. All the characters we have come to love come together to celebrate Darcy and Nick’s wedding, solve a scary mystery, and share a magical moment.

I have enjoyed every book in this series but this one my favorite. The Wishcrafter theme is unique and fun and seeing Darcy’s wishes come true was so heartwarming. We are also treated to a fantastic whodunit. A suspicious death and fire, a missing person, along with what could be some world-ending mayhem.

Knowing this was the last time I would be visiting these characters I had allotted extra reading time so I could savor the time with them. But there was so much happening and the pace was so quick, I was shocked how fast I finished this book. There was a true edge of my seat moment too where the pages moved even faster. I am glad I was reading on my kindle, a paperback copy may have burst into flames 🙂

I am so happy with the way this series has ended and I want to thank Heather Blake for many hours of escaping into these GREAT books! I will never forget these magical characters or their wonderful village.

It is only fitting that this book will be on my Best Reads List for 2019.

One Potion in the Grave (A Magic Potion Mystery)
Cozy Mystery
2nd in Series
Setting – Alabama
Berkley – Obsidian (October 7, 2014)
Mass Market Paperback: 336 pages
ISBN-10: 0451416317
ISBN-13: 978-0451416315
Kindle ASIN: B00ISEF62C

Carly Bell Hartwell’s love potions are always in demand in Hitching Post, Alabama, the wedding capital of the South.…

When Katie Sue Perrywinkle walks into the Little Shop of Potions, Carly is surprised and delighted to see her old childhood friend. Katie Sue fled her hometown and a troubled family over a decade ago. But she’s not back for a social visit. She’s come to settle a score with Senator Warren Calhoun, who is in town for his son’s high-profile wedding.

But before Katie Sue has a chance to voice any objections, she’s forced to forever hold her peace. After finding her friend dead, Carly vows to find her murderer. Were the corrupt Calhouns willing to go to any lengths to avoid a scandal? Did Katie Sue’s family take the term “bad blood” to a whole new level? And why did the bride-to-be come to Carly for a love potion? As Carly gets closer to the truth, a killer is planning a very chilly reception.…

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Carly’s mom is getting ready for a high society wedding at her chapel. The son of Senator Warren Calhoun and his bride are prepared to tie the knot. But Katie Sue Perrywinkle has come back to town and she has issues with the Senator that need to be addressed. Before she can do anything she is found dead. Could the Calhouns have killed her or could it have been someone in the family she left behind when she moved away? Carly finds a way to get to get close to both families so she can try to figure out who got rid of her friend, Katie Sue. She also puts herself right in the killer’s sights.

This second book is a great addition to this series. Like her Wishcraft Mysteries, the story has a paranormal witchy theme that doesn’t overtake the entire story. We know Carly has ways to make her special potions work, and she has an empathy power so she can feel what people are feeling. The empathy thing can be very helpful not only in her work but in finding the killer. Her special talents and knowledge aside she is pretty normal. She is always at her mother’s beck and call to help with the chapel. She is the go-to person for her Aunts. She is trying to work things out with her ex-fiance while he is helping to renovate her house.

All the recurring characters are wonderfully written, unique, funny and entertaining. The new characters are well fleshed out. The author lets us get to know them throughout the entire book. The jury was out for me on some of them for me until the very end, but there were a couple I knew were bad from the first mention, but by the end, I had attached “downright evil” to these people.

This mystery was very twisted up regarding Katie Sue. Plenty of suspects and plenty of opportunities. While trying to solve this mystery, Carly stumbles into another one. The second one was easy for me to solve, the first one I was stumped until the very end. Then I was mad at myself because I should have figured that one out too or at least had the person on my radar. Great diversion on the author’s part.

Heather Blake is a fantastic storyteller! She has created a story with a terrific mix of mystery, suspense, humor, magic, and romance. Everything in the proper proportions for a great cozy mystery. This was a delightful read!

Visiting the Enchanted Village

A travel guide by Heather Blake

The village square was aglow in fairy lights and sparkling lanterns hanging from tree branches. Gaslights cast circles of light onto the stone sidewalks and threw shadows along the connected storefronts and individual shops that lined the main square.

Awnings shaded large plate-glass shop windows, and ivy trailed from flower boxes bursting with bold-hued annuals. A few tourists remained, walking hand in hand along the sidewalk, window-shopping—most of the shops closed at nine on weeknights. Windows glowed in the apartments above the storefronts, and specks of lights twinkled from the streetlamps along the lanes of the neighborhoods beyond the square.

Neighborhoods where magic lived.

It Takes a Witch

Destination: The Enchanted Village

  • A witch-themed neighborhood of Salem, Massachusetts, popular with tourists.

Best time to visit:

  • When there hasn’t been a murder.
  • But seriously, any time. Every season is enjoyable in this charming neighborhood.

Good eats and drinks:

  • The Gingerbread Shack

This bakery specializes in miniature treats that fill you with contentment. Literally, some say.

  • The Sorcerer’s Stove*

This family restaurant has had its ups and downs, but on the whole, the food is a delight—when it’s not hexed. Eat at your own risk.

  • The Cauldron pub*

One of the few establishments in the village opens after 9 pm.

  • The Witch’s Brew coffee shop

Grab a cup of coffee, a scone, and the day’s local news.

Where to stay:

  • The Pixie Cottage, a B&B

Be sure to visit with Cookie, a pygmy goat, and Scalawag, a miniature donkey, who are two of the most popular attractions in the village. In the spring and summer, enjoy the vast flower gardens on the property.

Shopping:

  • Spellbound bookshop*, The Bewitching Boutique clothiers, The Trimmed Wick candle shop, Lotions, and Potions* bath and body shop, The Black Thorn* florist, All that Glitters jewelry store, the Furry Toadstool pet shop, The Crone’s Cupboard market, The Snuggery furnishings and décor, Ye Olde Gift Shoppe, and Balefire Sports to name a few.

To do:

  • Enjoy the village green*

The green is the heart of the village and home to many festivals, fairs, and traveling shows, including the Firelight Psychic festival, the Roving Stones rock and mineral show, the Midsummer Ball, and the Harvest festival*.

  • Explore the Enchanted Woods*

Hiking trails twist through the dense, reportedly mystical, forest that surrounds the village.

  • In the spring, check out the Pawsitively Enchanting Pet Extravaganza*.
  • In the fall, look for the Shakespearian festival set up behind the Wickedly Creative Art Studio*.
  • In the winter, cheer for the Wicked Mad Dash adventure runners.
  • Enjoy shows year-round at the grand playhouse.

Transportation:

  • Bring good walking shoes, the more stylish the better or they could potentially be replaced by Godfrey Baleaux, owner of the Bewitching Boutique. He has a discerning eye, little regard for comfort, and persuasive powers.
  • Limited parking available along the main village square. Overflow lots located near the village playhouse and the Sorcerer’s Stove.

Weather:

  • Typical New England weather, except for the hint of magic in the air—that’s a climate characteristic native to only this village.
  • Occasionally, the weather will change in the blink of an eye, especially if that wink is from someone in the Merriweather family.

Language:

  • English
  • French, mostly within the walls of the Bewitching Boutique, an oddity no tourist questions.

Currency:

  • US dollars
  • Gossip

Highlights:

  • As You Wish*

If you find yourself in need of a helping hand while in the village, check out As You Wish, a personal concierge service run by Darcy Merriweather. There’s not a witch person around who’s more capable of handling a crisis. She’s been known to plan last-minute parties, obtain hard-to-find gifts, dress as the Tooth Fairy to charm a five-year-old, tidy the house of a hoarder, and on many occasions, help solve crimes. Appointments upon request…or upon discovery of a dead body.

*Denotes that a murder or attempted murder has taken place within this establishment or on its grounds. Despite the high crime rate per capita, the village is full of magic and endless charm. A visit is always memorable and is highly recommended.

Thank you, Heather, so much for this wonderful travel guide!

Now let me tell you about the newest book in this amazing series!

To Catch a Witch: A Wishcraft Mystery

Setting – Massachusetts
Crooked Lane Books (August 7, 2018)
Hardcover: 320 pages
ISBN-10: 1683317084
ISBN-13: 978-1683317081

Wishcrafter Darcy Merriweather might be a witch with the ability to grant wishes for others, but wishing isn’t going to help her catch a killer…

When wishcrafter Darcy Merriweather’s personal concierge company is hired by elite runner Abby Stillwell to organize the Wicked Mad Dash, a competition that takes place in the Enchanted Village, Darcy is more than willing to help her friend. As blizzard conditions rage on the morning of the race, Darcy’s main concern is the terrible weather—until Abby goes missing…and is later found dead, buried in the snow.

As Darcy investigates her friend’s untimely death, she learns that she didn’t really know Abby well at all. And those closest to the woman—her secret fiancé, her roommate, her ex-boyfriend, and her co-workers at Balefire Sports—seem to have plenty to hide too. As Darcy digs deeper, she uncovers complicated relationships, a possible embezzlement scheme, and allegations of cheating against a top athlete.

Just when Darcy is convinced she’s hit a dead end in the case, a startling burglary and the hunt for Abby’s elusive ex send Darcy down a dark, dangerous trail. It will take the help from friends, family, and a little bit of magic for Darcy to stop a stone-cold killer from striking again.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

We arrive in the Enchanted Village just in time for the annual Wicked Mad Dash and a few pranks from new crafter Vince Paxton. He is still finding his place in the village but Darcy Merriweather organizer of the event and wishcrafter wishes he would just cut it out. Of course, she can’t grant her own wishes but she still wants Vince to use his powers for good instead of the chaos he loves to create. It’d bad enough that a blizzard has created whiteout conditions and the person that hired Darci has gone missing.

A huge search finds the young woman dead, buried under a pile of snow. Since the death happened in the village the elder has asked Darcy to investigate and all she finds is that everyone connected to the woman is hiding something. Darcy is going to need more than wishes to solve the crime. In fact, she is going to need the help of all her friends and family to catch the witch and bring the killer to justice.

Every time I visit the Enchanted Village and these characters I am taken aback by the wonderful world Heather Blake has designed. From the village to the forest to the meadow I fully escape right into the realm this author has created. Her descriptions create wonderful imagery in full color and bring the world so alive. So easy to believe and picture each place we visit.

The characters are so full of life too. Whether it be the witches, their familiars or the visitors to the village they are so genuine. You never question the conversations with Archie, the macaw or with mice, Pepe and Mrs. P. You don’t question the physician’s healing powers or all the different magical abilities the people of the village have. This time the focus on Vincicrafters, witches with innate athleticism, fantastic runners. The Bryant family are Vincicrafters and own the local sporting goods store. The place where the victim worked.

There is also drama around Darcy’s sister Harper, who had broken up with her boyfriend, fell into a dark depression and has dedicated every waking moment to her business.  On a related note, Dorothy Hansel Dewitt is brewing up plans to overthrow the elder. And Darcy’s her fiancé, Nick Sawyer, police chief for Enchanted Village and his daughter Mimi have moved into her house and have but his on the market.

The author has packed these pages with such a delightful story and a mystery to solve. It is so well written. Twists, turns, and tense moments all lead to a very surprising ending. It flows at a perfect pace. I love the way Nick and Darcy work together. Mutual respect and sharing. They truly are a perfect match.

The Wishcraft Mysteries are a unique series and each book builds from the last one. I am thrilled that it lives on with a new publisher. The author has included some backstory for new readers but you truly need to read the series from the start in order to enjoy the series to the fullest and really get to know the characters and their place in the village. There is a bit of a cliffhanger to this story too. I am honestly tapping my foot, very impatient for book #9. 🙂

The Witch and the Dead (Wishcraft Mystery)
Cozy Mystery
7th in Series
Setting – Massachusetts
Berkley (October 4, 2016)
Mass Market Paperback: 320 pages
ISBN-10: 1101990139
ISBN-13: 978-1101990131
Kindle ASIN: B01AHKXI2O

When Darcy moved to Salem, Massachusetts, she never expected her life to change as drastically as it did. But within a short time, the Enchanted Village has become her home, its mystical residents have become her family, and As You Wish, the personal concierge business formerly run by her Aunt Ve, has become her calling. Still, the time has come for change—and for Darcy to move out of Aunt Ve’s house.

Darcy’s belongings are stashed in Aunt Ve’s garage, alongside a mess of memories, forgotten possessions, and, to both Ve and Darcy’s horror, a pile of old bones. It turns out they belong to Ve’s long missing second husband. Now Darcy must unpack old secrets to solve a cold case—and make sure her aunt isn’t looking at a spell behind bars.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Darcy is taking a huge step. She is moving out of Aunt Ve’s house. She is moving all the way down the street, honestly just 2 houses down. That makes for an easy move until while getting her stuff out of her aunt’s garage she discovers bones, human bones! Ve knows right away it is husband, the one that disappeared right after they were married. Of course, her aunt becomes the prime suspect. Darcy has been asked by the elder to investigate, which she would have done anyway. She just needs to figure out how to do it! I mean it all happened a long time ago.

I don’t usually read paranormal cozy mysteries, but Heather Blake and the late Joyce Lavene reeled me right into their stories. Ms. Blake’s characters seem like people you would meet anywhere, but they have hidden powers, “crafts” that make them wonderfully unique. Most mortals that visit the Enchanted Village know nothing of the witches secrets. A witch that tells their secret to a mortal would lose their powers. There are “seekers” that try to uncover the mystery of the village. The witches know how to deal with them. But someone is messing with Dark Magic and that may require a higher power to handle.

Heather Blake has written another fantastic sequel for this series. I escaped away to the Enchanted Village and loved traveling around with Darcy as she found that everyone seemed to have a secret they were hiding. This was not an easy case to solve. I also enjoyed the way her relationship with Nick and his daughter moves to a new level. All the familiars are back too!  Pepe and Mrs. P always bring a smile to my face and Archie always catches me with his movie quotes. Is there another familiar in Darcy’s life? You will have to read the book to find out.

Every story in this series is positively enchanting, magical and fun! The characters are unique, the plots flow perfectly, and the setting idyllic. Ms. Blake is a wonderful storyteller. They are best read in order as each story builds from the last, but the author gives you enough backstory for new readers to jump in anywhere.

I really love this series.

Heather Blake 2014

Paranormal, on the Light Side

By Heather Blake

(Post received from publicist.)

I’ve always had a fascination with the paranormal, so it’s really no surprise to me that I started writing witches, psychics, and empaths… My early love of I Dream of Jeannie, Bewitched, and more recently, my slight addiction to Long Island Medium have all have influenced me. But alas, I’m not a witch. Or a genie. Or a psychic. Instead of writing what I know (a common phrase in fiction writing), I simply write what fascinates me.

gone with the witchBeyond pop culture influences, I’ve also had some personal incidents in my life that have made me take note of the paranormal. When my twenty-two-year-old son was three, it was early morning when I heard him talking in the other room, having a full conversation with someone I couldn’t see… When I asked him who he was talking to, he said quite seriously (yet calmly), “The man.”

Spooky, right? It was for me too—at first. But my grandfather had died the week before, before he’d had a chance to meet my son… I like to believe that they were getting to know each other.

For years, I’ve noticed that when I get into my car, my rearview mirror is tilted. If I run an errand and come back to the car the mirror is askew. Not every time, but enough times to make me wonder who’s riding along with me.

It’s situations like these — and others I hear about — that keep me writing about things that can’t easily be explained. I write books that deal with things that go bump…all day long. All of it is unexplainable. All of it so very fun.

Fun, because my preference is to take supernatural experiences and keep them light, to find the humor in them, or to take an emotional look at how these things can impact the lives of those around them…for the good. Despite writing murder mysteries, I prefer to focus on the good, not the evil, which comes across in every book I’ve ever written. There’s too much dark in the world as it is—which is why I don’t like scary movies…or watching the news. Instead you’ll catch me watching repeats of Bewitched.

Have you had anything go bump lately?

~Heather

Darcy and her dog Missy are determined to put their best foot forward at the Enchanted Village’s annual Pawsitively Enchanted pet contest. She’s happy to lend a hand when the show’s organizer hires Darcy to keep an eye on things among growing suspicions that someone is sabotaging the event. But Darcy’s quest for justice is thrown off the scent when her lead suspect is found dead at the competition.

As if a murder weren’t bad enough, someone begins snatching up prize-winning pets right from under their owners’ noses. Darcy is determined to protect the pampered participants at whatever cost. But she’ll have to work fast to sniff out the thief before she becomes the next victim of a killer determined to stop her dead in her tracks…

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Another enchanting tale from Heather Blake. This series is so magical. I sat down to read and the real world just disappeared.

The pets are on parade in this Wishcraft Mystery with a Pawsitively Enchanted Pet Contest. It is set up like a fair with each pet having a booth. Darcy and Missy are entered but they are really on a job. They have been hired to make sure a certain someone doesn’t sabotage the competition.  When that certain someone ends up dead Darcy focus changes from saving the fair to catching a killer. That isn’t all, someone is stealing some of the contestants and their owners are desperate for their return. Darcy has her handful and wishes she could wish all the problems away but she is going to have to collar the killer by tracking them down herself.

I love the characters, the setting and Ms. Blake always pens a fantastic mystery.

The human residents of The Enchanted Village are wonderful but the “familiars” always put a smile on my face. Pepe and Mrs. P. are quite a pair and always available to help Darcy out. Archie has his own problems this time but still has time to throw a few movie quotes about.

The village is not just enchanting, it is a busy place. There is always something going on. In addition to Darcy work she is having a house renovated and her romantic relationship with Nick is moving right along. Aunt Ve is always up to something. Darcy thinks she is meeting in secret with The Elder and wonders what they have brewing.

Magic and mystery are blended together in such a great way. I was engaged from the first page until the last and sorry that the story had to end.

Throughout the series a big secret has been kept from Darcy and her sister. We got close to a reveal in the last book but it comes to light completely in this story. Now we have to wait to see what happens next in The Witch and the Dead in October. I am wishing it wasn’t so far away!

After my son’s death last year my reading schedule really got messed up. I just realized that a new book was coming out in this series in May and I hadn’t read this one yet. I had given the 4th book in the series, The Goodbye Witch, a Paradise Rating so how did I miss this book??

Wishcrafter Darcy Merriweather can charm desires into reality, but as the national bestselling Wishcraft mysteries continue, she won’t be able to magically avoid trouble when death holds an open house….

The Enchanted Village is abuzz when the old Tavistock house finally goes up for sale. Darcy’s friend Curecrafter Cherise Goodwin is hoping she will have the winning bid on the home, but Darcy can’t shake the feeling that something bad is about to happen—and her magical instincts are usually right.

Sure enough, while Darcy and Cherise are looking at the property, they discover real estate agent Raina Gallagher stone-cold dead on the floor. Clutched in her hand is a gemstone amulet and, on the wall above her, a large red A. While Raina had no shortage of enemies, there’s also a dark legend about the house itself. To track down the killer, Darcy must unlock the secrets of both the deceased and the estate—and she’ll need to act fast, because revenge is a deal that never closes.…

Dollycas’s Thoughts

I LOVE THIS SERIES!!

Darcy Merriweather is wishcrafter, meaning she can grant wishes, with the exception of bringing someone back from the dead or money. Boy, those are two wishes I wish for every day 🙂 but she is able to grant some really wonderful wishes. She also runs a personal concierge business call As You Wish with her Aunt Ve.

In this installment Darcy is taking care of the business and Aunt Ve is running for town council. As You Wish has been hired to help Curecrafter Cherise Goodwin find the perfect home. Cherise has decided the perfect home for her is right next door to her ex and Darcy has been unable to change her mind, so they go to take one last look at the house before the final bid. Darcy just has an inkling something bad is going to happen and it does. They find their real estate agent, Raina, dead on the floor. This is when dating the police chief has its advantages. They kinda work together to solve the crime. I am sure Nick wishes she would leave the investigating to him but that is one wish she definitely will not be granting.

Again, I escaped right into this story and enjoyed every minute. All of the characters are special, the setting is as the name says, enchanting, and plot and subplots are fun, entertaining and tricky too. So many secrets are whirling around The Enchanted Village. Some humorous, one that made Darcy, her sister and me all say”EW”, o.k. I said it with a little giggle, and others that lead you deeper into the story of why the realtor had to die. There is also a big secret that I think I know the answer to. Maybe it will be revealed in the next book.

Heather Blake is a gifted storyteller. Every one of these characters came alive in these pages and I truly “WISH” they were real. I want to pack my bags and move there today.  She has created a modern day fairy tale, that tests our minds as we follow the clues and puts a smile on your face throughout the whole story.

Each story on this series builds from the last as Darcy learns more and more about her gift and this very unique tourist hot spot. That is why I recommend starting at the beginning. That being said the author gives enough information to really jump in anywhere.

Some Like It Witchy – I sure do!

As Enchanted Village’s resident Wishcrafter, Darcy Merriweather has the power to make other people’s wishes come true, but what she really wishes is that she had the power to uncloak the invisible man who’s stalking her best friend….

Darcy’s closest friend and fellow witch, Starla Sullivan, hoped she’d never see her ex-husband, Kyle, again. Two years ago he tried to kill her, and he has been a fugitive ever since. Now Starla claims to have seen him back in Enchanted Village, but it seems she’s the only one who can see him. To everyone else, her ex is invisible.

Darcy only wishes his motives were as transparent as the rest of him. Since the police can’t arrest someone they can’t see, it’s up to Darcy to find the secret behind Kyle’s latest disappearing act—before he does something they can’t see coming….

Dollycas’s Thoughts

I have been totally and utterly fascinated by this series since the beginning but this one topped them all. Blake has created the ultimate world to escape into. The Enchanted Village is a magical place that wishes can come true. I wish I could live there myself.

The series has a wonderful cast of characters. Darcy is not only a wishcrafter, she is a strong woman. She has a great relationship with Police Chief Nick who understands her craft because his daughter is a wishcrafter too. Aunt Ve is helping Darcy learn more about her gift along with Darcy’s sister Harper. The all believe everything Starla is telling them, they just need to figure out how Kyle is doing it. They are assisted by some truly magical characters, Pepe, a mouse who can sure thread a needle, and Archie, a talking parrot who can remember any line from almost any movie ever made.

My favorite character though was Mrs. P.  (Mrs. Pennywhistle) This lady touched by heart. She wanted to do anything she could to help Starla and all her friends even when she wasn’t physically able.

There are several subplots marvelously woven into the main storyline. The Goodbye theme is carried throughout the entire story. I don’t want to say more because you need to read this and discover it yourself. Just keep a tissue handy. This is the first cozy mystery I can remember reading that made my cry.

Heather Blake has written a wonderful, sensational, awesome story.  It deserves way more than 5 stars!!

The Good the Bad and the Witchy (A Wishcraft Mystery, #3)

Darcy Merriweather is Enchanted Village’s newest resident Wishcrafter—a witch who can grant wishes for others. But as Darcy prepares a celebration for a magical florist, she discovers that every rose has its thorns…

As You Wish, Darcy and Aunt Ve’s personal concierge service has been hired to throw a party for magical florist, Harriette Harkness. She is 80 years young and plans to celebrate. She is also celebrating her new Witching Hour rose, it is the very first all natural midnight black flower.

Darcy has all the plans under control and ready to go. She is just waiting for Michael Healey to deliver the cake and the special entertainment to arrive. When she goes out to the parking lot to track down these very important party needs the celebration is turned inside out. She finds Michael’s dead body not far from the bakery van. She then receives another surprise when Michael’s ghost imprints itself on her. This means they are bonded together until she “untangles the thicket surrounding his murder”.

Dollycas’s Thoughts
I have fallen hard for this series and its magical characters.

A contemporary fairy tale, The Good, the Bad, and the Witchy even has a set of Wicked Sisters! All my favorites are back from past stories, including the lovable familiars, Pepe and the movie line expert Archie. They are joined by all the witch crafters that call the Enchanted Village home.

The part that really caught my interest was the imprinting of the ghost on Darcy. I think this would be so cool!!! as long as it was a friendly ghost like Michael. They way they were able to communicate was just brilliant. The special craft the he and his sister had was also interesting.

I was also taken in by the floracrafters vs. the terracrafters and the dysfunctional families created by their prejudice of each other. To me both gifts would be so much fun with all the plants, the blooms, the lawns, the gardens.

The Enchanted Village is truly a magical place, full of whimsical characters. A place where wishes come true and spells are cast. A place where the familiar becomes extraordinary. A place where romance is starting to bloom. A place I would love to visit often. I wish I never had to leave!!!!

The whole series is recommended highly. I know you will be as enchanted as I have become with these wonderful stories!

a perfect escape

Welcome to Cozy Wednesday!

We all have our favorite genres and those we tend to avoid. For me I avoid anything with aliens, vampires, werewolves or zombies. Witches and ghosts also used to be included on that list. Paranormal stuff just wasn’t my “cup of tea”. But thanks to authors like Heather Blake I have changed my mind. I am one of those people she talks about in her post below. Maybe you are too!

Hi Heather!

Hi Everyone!

Enchanted

I knew that when I started writing the Wishcraft mysteries that some of my readers wouldn’t be as enchanted with them as I was. Mostly because of the content—after all, the stories center around witches, and some people just don’t do witches—as I heard discouragingly time and again.

I understand, I really do. I was in their position recently with Meg Cabot’s vampire series. I don’t particularly care for vampire books, but I love Meg Cabot’s books and her writing, so I gave the vampires a try. The result? I loved them. Lesson learned. I’d never let a stereotype dissuade me.

So my response to my readers? Give my books a try. Especially if you’ve read and enjoyed my other novels, give this series a chance. Trust me as an author, and trust my writing enough to deliver a satisfying story.

Most did. The result? They were…enchanted.

Why?

Because my books are all about the characters. Darcy, who stars in the Wishcraft mysteries, is just a woman trying to figure out who she is and how she belongs. She’s had more downs than ups, but she’s strong and willing to fight for what’s right. She’s relatable and flawed. And she just happens to be a witch.

Then there’s one of her sidekicks, the town historian with a long history, big talent as a clothing designer, a cranky disposition, and a penchant for biting. He’s also a mouse—something easy to forget as one gets wrapped up in the story.

The characters are unique and lovable, fun and endearing. They become…friends.

So for all of you who are on the fence about reading a “witch” book…give it a shot.

Maybe you’ll be enchanted, too.

~Heather

I have definitely been enchanted by these stories! Heather, I hope you come back again to visit soon!!

A Witch Before Dying (A Wishcraft Mystery, #2)

Darcy Merriweather is a wishcrafter who can grant wishes for anyone but herself. She works for her Aunt Ve’s personal concierge service, As You Wish.

Aunt Ve is feeling a bit under the weather plus she is trying to plan her wedding. Darcy is trying to help her but she also takes on Elodie Keaton as a new client.

Elodie’s mother has been missing for so long Elodie realizes that she can no longer afford to pay all the bills and keep her mother’s house. Her mother was a bit of a hoarder and Elodie hires Darcy to clean out the house so she can list it for sale. The motto of As You Wish is “No Job Impossible” but this house is close to impossible.  Darcy just starts to make a little headway through the piles of boxes, newspapers and other “treasures” when she makes a disturbing discovery. She finds Elodie’s mother’s body buried under all the chaos.

It has been over a year since Patrice Keaton was seen. She disappeared shortly after an argument  with her charmcrafter boyfriend. Darcy is determined to figure out just how Patrice ended up being part of her own collection. Was she killed in a fit of jealousy? Or was she killed because she had something someone else wanted? Darcy knows she doesn’t have much time and while she can’t grant her own wishes she has to make sure the wrong person’s wishes don’t come true.

Dollycas’s Thoughts
I am definitely enchanted by this story and its characters! Darcy, Ve, Nick and Mimi will wish their way right into your heart.

Blake has crafted characters that not only include some delightful witches but the familiars are absolutely charming! Archie and Pepe had me in stitches. Easy for Pepe as he’s a tailor who also happens to be a mouse. Archie is a parrot that can quote a line from almost any movie. Archie has a unique run in with a very large dog that had me giggling out loud and reading the snippet to everyone I could.

The story has a really fairy tale feel. As Pepe was sewing away I was picturing the mice in Cinderella as they granted her wishes. Heather Blake wraps her fairy tale with a bewitching mystery, snappy dialogue, and a bit of romance in a truly Enchanted Village.

A magical story to escape into today. It is a fun, lighthearted read that I know you will enjoy. Watch for the next book in this series, The Good, the Bad and the Witchy: A Wishcraft Mystery hitting shelves in April 2013.
