Aggie vacations with Sam and Meredith at a Texas Hill Country dude ranch with plans to advise her column readers how to stay young and fresh in summer. Except for wranglers, dudes, heat, snakes and poison ivy, what could go wrong?

When an expert rider is thrown from a horse and lies in a coma, Aggie is convinced somebody caused the fall. Despite Sam’s warnings, Aggie is determined to expose the assailant. She concocts ingenious sleuthing methods that strain their dicey relationship as she probes secrets of the ranch and its inhabitants. After she scatters a hornet’s nest of cowboys, she discovers more than one hombre in the bunch would like to slit her throat.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Aggie, Meredith and Sam arrive at the BVS Dude Ranch and are immediately underwhelmed by the place but after meeting the owners and other visitors they decide to stick it out and try to enjoy themselves. When one of the employees of the ranch is thrown from her horse Aggie’s itchy feet tell her something is not right. When she learns the previous owners of the ranch died of unusual circumstances and their will contained some strange contingencies Aggie gets even more curious.

Unlike the first story of this series, Fit To Be Dead Aggie listens to Sam and they work together to piece together the evidence and clues to try to find out what really happened. Being a detective he can get information Aggie could never get on her own. They are also working on their relationship although she still has a big secret. To get the most out of this story you need to have read the first book in this series to understand Aggie and Sam’s relationship. This book builds from the foundation set up there and continues.

The mystery is pretty complex as it ties to the past history of the dude ranch and the lengths some people will go to get something they want. There are a variety of suspects and the setting itself adds to the adventure. 1800 acres is a lot of ground to cover and it is full of trails that can divert from the truth or lead you to it.

Being from Wisconsin I enjoyed the references to my state and was surprised how many of the characters moved from here or close by.

Nancy G. West has taken us to a fun place for this installment and while there is plenty of drama there is also plenty of humor. I really enjoyed Dang Near Dead and can’t wait to see where Aggie and her friends go next.

About This Author

I’ve been writing since age seven: poems back and forth with my mom. I had a real poem published in the Library Journal, Pegasus, at age fifteen. At eighteen, I wanted to study journalism and English literature, but friends who chose that college route were making minimum wage or selling lingerie. Being practical, I earned a business degree. After marriage and two children, I decided I HAD to study literature and write. I wrote non-fiction articles, a biography, and a suspense novel in 2004. That’s when whimsical Aggie Mundeen cut through the suspense, popped into my head and demanded her own series. The Aggie Mundeen mystery capers were born. Aggie must have been right: FIT TO BE DEAD is a LEFTY FINALIST 2013 for best humorous mystery, nominated by Left Coast Crime.

The Deep End
by Julie Mulhern

You will be hooked on this whodunit from the start. This debut novel will keep you wanting more.
~Shelley’s Book Case

Full of colorful characters, good dialogue, and taking place in the 70’s at the height of the Watergate scandal, The Dead End kept my attention from start to finish. The first book in “The Country Club Murders” series, is off to a good start.
~Queen of All She Reads

This book is pretty funny. The characters are well written. With the main character Ellison Russell your like I totally understand why she did that, and others your like, I just want to smack you. I can’t believe you did that.

Swimming into the lifeless body of her husband’s mistress tends to ruin a woman’s day, but becoming a murder suspect can ruin her whole life.

It’s 1974 and Ellison Russell’s life revolves around her daughter and her art. She’s long since stopped caring about her cheating husband, Henry, and the women with whom he entertains himself. That is, until she becomes a suspect in Madeline Harper’s death. The murder forces Ellison to confront her husband’s proclivities and his crimes—kinky sex, petty cruelties and blackmail.

As the body count approaches par on the seventh hole, Ellison knows she has to catch a killer. But with an interfering mother, an adoring father, a teenage daughter, and a cadre of well-meaning friends demanding her attention, can Ellison find the killer before he finds her?

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Set in the 1970’s this book treads close to the cozy/non-cozy mystery line due to some very interesting interests of some of the characters. Since it tells you in the synopsis I am not giving anything away by telling you sex of the kinky variety takes place and could be the reason a certain woman ends up dead floating in a country club swimming pool. It was the swinging 70’s!

Ellison Russell is unhappily married but sticking it out for her child and for appearances. How things appear to the world or other members of the country club are very important to Ellison’s mother and she is sure to tell her daughter that several times a say. As the story goes on Ellison becomes much stronger and really could care less what other people think shocking her mother and giving readers a good giggle or two.

I enjoyed the references to Watergate, and old television shows like Kojak and The Streets of San Francisco. A time before cell phones and when you wanted privacy on the phone the squiggly phone cord was stretched to reach into a closet or another room. A time when news was found in a newspaper not on a computer.

Julie Mulhern does a great job pulling us back in time and into Ellison’s world. She fills the story with very colorful characters and a plot that keeps us guessing the entire journey. She also makes us laugh and that is always a plus.

The Deep End is an excellent start for The County Club Murder series. Ellison really evolved in this story and I look forward to where the author takes her next.

Cozy Wednesday with LynDee Walker – Author of Devil in the Deadline – Giveaway

cozy wednesday 2013 640
Welcome to Cozy Wednesday!
Today LynDee Walker and her Devil in the Deadline Great Escapes Book Tour drop by for a visit.

LynDee headshot

The coolest little town you’ve never heard of
by LynDee Walker

Cozy mystery: to readers, the words often evoke a specific set of expectations. An amateur sleuth, usually a woman, who is nosy by nature and finds herself in the middle of a murder investigation. She often has an interesting day job, lives in a small town, and has some sort of connection to the police department.

My Headlines in High Heels mystery series fits many of those, but the idyllic village setting was skipped over in favor of my adopted hometown of Richmond, Virginia. I’ve been asked why, and the truth is I can’t say: I love the city, and from the first moment Nichelle popped into my head, she was just there. Richmond was as much a part of the story as her shoes, and I never considered changing that.

But that’s not to say I don’t adore small towns. I grew up in a fairly large city, but in Texa23269349s, you can point a car in any direction and find a charming little burg complete with a square and maybe even a mercantile shop or soda fountain.

My husband and I have a favorite of these, one we discovered by accident on our last weekend getaway before we became parents. I bet you’ve never heard of it, but if you ever make it to Texas Hill Country, put it on your “must go” list: welcome to Gruene (pronounced “Green”), y’all.

Way back in the long long ago before there were children in our house, my darling and I were big fans of the weekend getaway (we still are, but they’re more complicated. And more expensive). Paging through an issue of Southern Living, I found a write-up on a charming little B&B in the Texas Hill Country that featured individual cabins spaced around the property. I called Darling and he said we must go.

So we did. And the place was every bit as charming as the magazine proclaimed it. But the best find was yet to come. As we were exploring the square in the nearby town of Wimberley, a shopkeeper asked if we were planning to eat at the Grist Mill.

She laughed at our blank expressions and gave us directions to the next town over, where we found the biggest restaurant I’ve ever seen. Several stories tall, it’s in an old cotton mill with tables out on the terrace overlooking the Guadalupe River. They have literally hundreds of tables, y’all, and the food is so good they had an hour wait the first night we went. Worth every second. To this day, it’s the best chicken fried steak I’ve ever eaten.

Wandering the square after dinner, we came upon Gruene Hall, which is another of the town’s local claims to fame. Because so many musicians live in the Hill Country, you can often stumble onto a big-name show with a small town feel. The venue is lovely and rustic, and not so large that you’d have trouble seeing the stage from anywhere in the room.

What else can you ask for from a vacation? Lovely location, great accommodations, amazing food, and top notch entertainment. All hidden along the banks of the Guadalupe River in central Texas.

If you go, have a lemonade and some cheesecake for me.

When the Richmond police offer an exclusive in exchange for help with a case, nothing—not even a costume party—stops crime reporter Nichelle Clarke from making Manolo tracks to the crime scene. The hunt leads her to a televangelist’s compound in the Virginia countryside where the Reverend may be more interested in fat stacks of cash than he is saving wayward souls.

With two sexy guys tangled up in Nichelle’s story—and in her heart—work and love are on a crash course for disaster. Pressure pours in from every corner, including a faceless new competitor that means the deadline is always five minutes ago. As secrets threaten and the truth becomes her lifeline, Nichelle must unmask the killer and nail down the story before she’s snared in the carefully-constructed web.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Nichelle Clarke is a crime reporter with excellent taste in fine footwear and she doesn’t let those high heels hold her back when she needs to climb to the latest crime scene. The scene she finds is just ghastly and almost beyond words. But her new competition, a blogger, has no problem putting all the gruesome details out there. The big question is where is she getting her information. Nichelle is supposed to have an exclusive agreement with the cops! for her help in the investigation. That investigation puts Nichelle’s life in danger but she will do anything to get the story and catch a killer. It doesn’t hurt that she has her old high school boyfriend, now ATF Agent Kyle and a hunk like Joey with his questionable underworld ties watching her back, but can they keep her safe this time?

This entire series is absolutely awesome. Each story is just full of action, thrills, romance and humor too! LynDee Walker just keeps topping herself!

I love the characters! Nicey is such a strong woman and she is always on a deadline. This time she receives help from a very unlikely person. She also never knows when bad-boy Joey (no last name) will appear but his kisses never fail to curl her toes. Kyle is still interested in rekindling their romance and while she knows his last name and he would offer her a more stable life there is just no toe curling. But he isn’t giving up. I also like her editor at the paper. He seems like a man with common sense in an industry that is changing on a daily basis. He fights hard for his job and for Nichelle and makes an excellent sounding board for her.

The plot is fantastic. The crime seems to be pure evil and the twists really add to the suspense. We also learn more about Nichelle and the story ends with quite a cliffhanger. LynDee Walker’s journalist’s skills shine and have made her an excellent mystery writer.

A famous journalism dean is found dead at the bottom of a stairwell. The police suspect members of the faculty who had been engaged in a fierce quarrel with the dean — distinguished scholars who behaved like schoolyard bullies. When Meredith “Red” Solaris is appointed interim dean, the faculty suspects are furious. Will the beautiful red-haired professor be next? The case detective tries to protect her as he heads the investigation, but new threats lead him to believe that Red is the next target for death.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

The story starts out with a real punch. Reminding us of a true story of a faculty meeting at the University of Alabama that came to an abrupt halt when one member stood up and shot 6 people, 3 who died. Meredith “Red” Solaris was starting to wonder if something like that could happen at her school, Mountain West University. The debates were getting more vicious than ever and the staff is clearly turning against each other. When she receives a call telling her that her boss had been found dead at the bottom of the marble stairs in the school she realizes  it can and one of her colleagues could be a murderer.

Borne Morris takes us behind the scenes of the School of Journalism at Mountain West University. The politics, the backstabbing, the crazy world where tenure is coveted and scorned when it leaves bad professors in the classrooms. We learn about cheating and plagiarizing, curriculum debates and student/faculty relationships. Sometimes this world drives people over the edge and people end up severely hurt or even dead.

There is a lighter side of the story with a bit of romance between “Red” and the detective investigating the dean’s death. He is also doing his best to keep her safe.

This was a very quick read. The content completely held my interest and rang true as this crime was not solved in a short period of time. The lead detective was even asked to let another detective look at the case with fresh eyes. Maybe Detective Joe Morgan had grown to close to the case to see the clues clearly. There was a variety of ways this story could have played out and there were the right amount of twists to have it make complete sense as everything fell into place.

I think we have just scratched the surface of what we know about “Red” Solaris and Detective Joe Morgan. Morris has given us some rich characters here and  she has left them plenty of room to grow.

She’s a parent. She’s (almost) a P.I. No one gets on your case like mom.

Suburban widow and P.I. in training Nicki Valentine can barely keep track of her two kids, never mind anyone else. But when her best friend’s adoption plan is jeopardized by the young birth mother’s disappearance, Nicki is persuaded to help. Nearly everyone else believes the teenager ran away, but Nicki trusts her BFF’s judgment, and the feeling is mutual.

The case leads where few moms go (teen parties, gang shootings) and places they can’t avoid (preschool parties, OB-GYNs’ offices). Nicki has everything to lose and much to gain — including the attention of her unnervingly hot P.I. instructor. Thankfully, Nicki is armed with her pesky conscience, occasional babysitters, a fully stocked minivan, and nature’s best defense system: women’s intuition.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Nicki Valentine has a degree in forensic psychology and is attending classes to become a private investigator all while taking care of her two young children.  It didn’t take me long to see that Nicki has a huge heart and finds it very hard to say “no” to anyone. When her best friend’s surrogate disappears Nicki barges right into an investigation without really giving it much thought. Thankfully her extraordinary handsome instructor is there to help her better format a plan and move forward more carefully. That doesn’t mean she doesn’t find herself in some scary and dangerous situations. Nicki is more of an act first – think about it later sort of person.

The author has created some wonderful characters including Nicki’s mom, her friends Kenna and Andy, and P.I. Instructor Dean. All the characters have plenty of room to evolve as we get to know them better in future installments. We know Nicki and her kids are vegetarian and like most single moms housekeeping is not high on her priority list. Kenna wants to be a mom more than anything and her husband Andy is worried about what another disappointment could do to her and their relationship. They have been through a lot but their relationship has remained strong so far. Nicki’s mom is her go to babysitter unless she is off visiting her sister in Florida. She would do anything for daughter and grandchildren. Dean, oh Dean, this plot was just starting to thicken as this story came to its end but it looks like things could get very interesting.

A missing person case is an unusual case for a cozy mystery but I must say it was fun to read especially when you have rival gangs and drugs that could be involved. There is more than one edge of your seat moment! I was really surprised by the ending. I thought I knew the who but couldn’t figure out the why until everything all came together.

This series is off to a good starts and I am looking forward to the next book in this series.
