Good Morning America Buzz Pick

From the author of Class Mom and You’ve Been Volunteered comes a new book on one mom’s challenges through parenting and life, keeping her on her toes and perpetually in yoga pants.

Jen Dixon of Overland Park, Kansas—fearless mother of a fifth-grade boy and two thirty-something daughters—is used to juggling a lot, from her mission to become a spin instructor, to stepping in as the most acerbic class mom ever (again), to taking care of her two-year-old granddaughter. But when the PTA president throws her a mandate to raise $10,000 for the fifth-grade class, even unflappable Jen is going to need more than her regular spin class to get her through this final year at William Taft Elementary School.

In the midst of new complications—organizing the class overnight to Topeka, an unexpected spin class fan in the form of her husband’s crazy ex-wife, and trying to navigate her parents’ sudden descent into apparent delusions—Jen hardly has the patience to listen to yet another half-baked idea (come on, ladies, another wrapping paper sale?) from WeFUKCT (We Fundraise Until Kingdom Come Team), her fundraising committee. But if anyone can get elementary parents to pull off the impossible, it’s Jen Dixon.

With her always irreverent and laugh-out-loud humor—boldly holding forth on those things you’re thinking, but would never dare say out loud—Laurie Gelman shines a light on the indignities and hilarities of modern parenting.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Jen Dixon is back and she is now Class Mom for her son’s 5th-grade class. She is also working hard to because a spin instructor while taking care of her two-year-old granddaughter. Then the president of the PTA tasks her to lead a fundraising drive to raise $10,000 to buy new tablets for the students of William Taft Elementary School and the WeFUKCT (We Fundraise Until Kingdom Come Team) is born. Part of her Class Mom duties also has her organizing the 5th grade’s overnight field trip to Topeka too. There is also a lot of drama between her daughter and her baby daddy and his mother.  Hold on to your funny bone because Jen is back and better than ever.

This grandma loves this series because it brings back delightful and some harrowing memories of when my children were in elementary school. The fundraisers, the parent-teacher conferences, concerts, and all those events a parent must attend and sometimes lead or chaperone.

Laurie Gelman takes us right into the middle of Jen’s life and all her trial and tribulations. Most of the parents are now used to Jen’s emails but they still are so funny. She hits the nail on the head with the WeFUKCT committee and everything that can and does go wrong but surprisingly works out perfectly in the end.

There are some serious moments too, with Jen’s daughter trying to co-parent with her ex-boyfriend. Things take a scary turn when his mother arrives for the holidays. Jen also has to deal with her parents getting older and having some health issues. Add to that her husband’s ex AKA Crazy Cindy is back on the scene and someone may be bullying Max. Jen juggles it all with a few assists from her hubby wearing her yoga pants that we all know we live in as much as we can.

I know when I pick up a book by this author that I am going to smile and laugh. Jen deals with life, things we all have dealt with or will deal with in the future and makes us laugh and maybe even shed a tear like I did this time when she was taking care of her parents. Life is hard but Ms. Gelman reminds us how important it is to find the humor anytime we can.

Lighthearted and entertaining just like the previous two books in this series Yoga Pant Nation was a Perfect Escape. Next up! Smells Like Tween Spirit is set to be released on August 2.

#FlashbackFriday – Class Mom: A Novel by Laurie Gelman #Review / #Giveaway @lauriemgelman

On Flashback Fridays I will share with you
the books I was not able to review
when they were first released that have been screaming at me
from my To-Be-Read bookshelf.

While cozy mysteries are my favorites to read, once in a while I need a little break. A couple of years ago I read the second book in this series and really enjoyed it. I recently snapped up the first in this series and wouldn’t you know it, it has a little mystery of its own.

Laurie Gelman’s clever debut novel about a year in the life of a kindergarten class mom—a brilliant send-up of the petty and surprisingly cutthroat terrain of parent politics.

Jen Dixon is not your typical Kansas City kindergarten class mom—or mom in general. Jen already has two college-age daughters by two different (probably) musicians, and it’s her second time around the class mom block with five-year-old Max—this time with a husband and father by her side. Though her best friend and PTA President sees her as the “wisest” candidate for the job (or oldest), not all of the other parents agree.

From recording parents’ response times to her emails about helping in the classroom to requesting contributions of “special” brownies for curriculum night, not all of Jen’s methods win approval from the other moms. Throw in an old flame from Jen’s past, a hyper-sensitive “allergy mom,” a surprisingly sexy kindergarten teacher, and an impossible-to-please Real Housewife-wannabe, causing problems at every turn, and the job really becomes much more than she signed up for.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

I read the second book of this series first and am so glad I went back to read this one instead of skipping it and moving on to book three. Class Mom has Jen Dixon taking a job most parents run away from as fast as they can. She had held the job before when her now college-age daughters were in elementary school and the position hasn’t changed a lot since then. Her son Max is in kindergarten and her best friend is the president of the P.T.A. so there was no way she is getting out of the job.

Jen has quite a sense of humor that comes out in her emails to the parents in Max’s class. Some understand but a few just don’t get her sarcasm and wit, at least at first. Also one of the parents is a guy she had a huge crush on in high school. She also has to deal with a very interesting teacher and more than 13 other parent personalities that run the gambit including a stay-at-home student whose mother she only knows from her “out of the office” email responses.

This book was just what I needed to read. Jen Dixon just cracks me up and if we met in real life we would be fast friends.

Now you need to know this is not a book just filled with funny emails and snippets of kindergarten life. It is a great fictional story that drops into Jen’s life during Max’s kindergarten year and she tells us about it all. Her daughters at college and their boyfriend drama, her best friend struggling through an upsetting event, Jen’s interactions with her own crush, her workout schedule as she prepares for a major event, life with her “1st husband”, a little mid-life crisis, plus all the drama that comes with being a class mom and more. Ms. Gelman tells it like it is. Parenting isn’t easy but most of us wouldn’t trade it for any other job in the world. The things she focuses on are things I dealt with my own kids, the youngest of which just turned 29 that still take place today even though things are much harder at schools now for a variety of reasons.

Jen really comes to life within these pages and so do all the other characters. I felt like a butterfly on the wall observing each and every minute of this book.

What this author does expertly is bring the funny. I giggled, I guffawed, I laughed out loud, more times than I can count. I had an appointment the next day and I had to tell the woman I met with all about this book and I learned later she ordered the book as soon as she got home. She said she doesn’t read as fast as I do but is so happy I told her about it and plans to share it with her friends. She said she hasn’t laughed that hard in a long time.

Class Mom is a hilarious book! The second book, You’ve Been Volunteered, was too. The next time I need to destress I plan to pick up the third book, Yoga Pant Nation. And book four, Smells Like Tween Spirit is set to be released on August 2, 2022.

I highly recommend this book to all the moms and grandmothers out there. You will be truly entertained.

The Daughters of Temperance Hobbs: A Novel by Katherine Howe – #Spotlight / #Giveaway – Great Escapes Book Tour – @katherinebhowe @HenryHolt

The Daughters of Temperance Hobbs: A Novel
by Katherine Howe

I am excited to shine the spotlight on Katherine Howe’s
The Daughters of Temperance Hobbs today!

About the Book

The Daughters of Temperance Hobbs: A Novel
Occult Fiction
Henry Holt and Co. (June 25, 2019)
Hardcover: 352 pages
ISBN-10: 1250304865
ISBN-13: 978-1250304865
Kindle ASIN: B07HF3MDDH

New York Times bestselling author Katherine Howe returns to the world of The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane with a bewitching story of a New England history professor who must race against time to free her family from a curse

Connie Goodwin is an expert on America’s fractured past with witchcraft. A young, tenure-track professor in Boston, she’s earned career success by studying the history of magic in colonial America—especially women’s home recipes and medicines—and by exposing society’s threats against women fluent in those skills. But beyond her studies, Connie harbors a secret: She is the direct descendant of a woman tried as a witch in Salem, an ancestor whose abilities were far more magical than the historical record shows.

When a hint from her mother and clues from her research lead Connie to the shocking realization that her partner’s life is in danger, she must race to solve the mystery behind a hundreds’-years-long deadly curse.

Flashing back through American history to the lives of certain supernaturally gifted women, The Daughters of Temperance Hobbs affectingly reveals not only the special bond that unites one particular matriarchal line, but also explores the many challenges to women’s survival across the decades—and the risks some women are forced to take to protect what they love most.

About the Author

Katherine Howe is the author of the New York Times bestsellers The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane and The House of Velvet and Glass, as well as the young adult novels, Conversion and The Appearance of Annie van Sinderen. She served as editor of The Penguin Book of Witches and her fiction has been translated into over twenty languages. Descended from three women who were tried for witchcraft in Salem, she and her family live in New England and New York City, where she is at work on her next novel.

In the eagerly anticipated follow-up to Laurie Gelman’s “irreverent and hilarious” (The New York Post) hit Class Mom, brash, lovable Jen Dixon is back with a new class and her work cut out for her

If you’ve ever been a room parent or school volunteer, Jen Dixon is your hero. She says what every class mom is really thinking, whether in her notoriously frank emails or standup-worthy interactions with the micromanaging PTA President and the gamut of difficult parents. Luckily, she has the charm and wit to get away with it—most of the time. Jen is sassier than ever but dealing with a whole new set of challenges, in the world of parental politics and at home.

She’s been roped into room-parenting yet again, for her son Max’s third grade class, but as her husband buries himself in work, her older daughters navigate adulthood, and Jen’s own aging parents start to need some parenting themselves, Jen gets pulled in more directions than any one mom, or superhero, can handle.

Refreshingly down-to-earth and brimming with warmth, Dixon’s next chapter will keep you turning the pages to find out what’s really going on under the veneer of polite parent interactions, and have you laughing along with her the whole way.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

As a last resort, Jen Dixon is again the Class Mom for her son Max’s class. The kids are now in 3rd grade and except for 1 new family, the parents are familiar with the way Jen handles things and her crazy sense of humor.

Her first email starts with: Yes, I’m back despite swearing they would have to drag my cold dead body back to the PTA. She includes a questionnaire from teacher Mrs. Randozzo. Jen’s responses regarding Max and the teacher’s responses back truly had me laughing out loud.  And that was just Chapter One!

With a new PTA President and the retirement of the current crossing guard, Jen also finds herself in charge of the 5th-grade Safety Patrol Program. That means many more delightful  – NOT – things for her to handle. She also has to deal with her husband, a daughter working at Jenny Craig, a daughter traveling abroad with a band and her aging parents.

Jen Dixon is my idol. She is everything I wish I was while shepherding 4 children through school. Of course, back then we were just exploring all the joys the internet had to offer. I was also part of the 5th-grade Safety Patrol back when dinosaurs roamed the earth so that whole subplot made me smile too. As far as dealing with adult children and aging parents, I have been there, done that too. In fact, I am still dealing with the adult children stuff but their trials and tribulations are not as funny as Jen’s, at least not yet, some never will be amusing but maybe someday I could write a book, fictional of course with the names changed to protect the not so innocent.

Until then, you have to read this book! Laurie Gelman has written a fantastic story. She has taken on some light and heavy issues and allowed Jen to keep her spirit and find the funny. Sometimes that’s what moms have to do to get up and keep going each and every day. I laughed from beginning to end and found a bit of wisdom too.

This book has everything I look for in A PERFECT ESCAPE! A lead character I can believe and identify with, a story that holds my attention, and a book I can’t wait to tell all my friends about.  The lighthearted feeling and the off the charts hilarity was just the icing on the top of the cake.

I have not read the first book in this series, Class Mom but I added it to my wish list as soon as I completed this book. I can’t wait to read it or any book by this author.  She truly has tickled my funny bone and I want more!

Totally entertaining – a must-read for all moms! Add this book to your Back-to-School lists today!
