I am absolutely delighted to welcome Jacklyn Brady to Escape With Dollycas today!

Jacklyn Brady 01

Thanks so much for inviting me to visit your blog today. I’m thrilled to be here.

One of the most frequent questions I get as a writer is where ideas for a book come from. There’s no one answer, of course. Sometimes an idea comes in a flash. I might see a character in my imagination or overhear a snippet of conversation, and my creative muse is off and running. Those times are great, and I’d be lying if I said I didn’t love when that happens.

cakes of monte cristoThere are other times, however, when the idea is more elusive, the thread of a plot harder to find, the characters more difficult to discover. Most writers like to talk about those flash-of-inspiration moments because they’re interesting and exciting. I think readers like to hear about them, too. I know I do. But I’m afraid that finding the plot and the characters for The Cakes of Monte Cristo wasn’t one of those lovely experiences.

I had the idea for signing Rita up to cater the Belle Lune Ball while writing Rebel Without a Cake. It seemed like a great idea, a chance for Rita and the crew to stretch and grow. Besides, the title for The Cakes of Monte Cristo had come to me in a flash, and I loved it. But when I sat down to write the book, that’s all I had–an obligation for Rita established in the previous novel and a title I adored. Nothing else.

Milk Explosion PubDomainI’d already created the Monte Cristo Hotel in Rebel so that locked me into holding the Belle Lune Ball there, but I didn’t worry. I was so excited about the title, I expected the ideas to pour forth like … well, like something wonderful and fluid.

Dried Mud Pub DomainInstead, the ideas were hidden under layers of thick, dried mud.

It took a while and a lot of brainstorming with my editor at the time to excavate the plot and find the treasure that had been hidden at Zydeco Cakes this whole time. I think we were both as surprised to find it as Rita is. It took a while longer to discover the characters. Rita hired no less than six assistants to fill in for Edie while she’s on maternity leave before Estelle finally suggested her niece, Zoey. But once Zoey showed up, I knew we had our gal.

As difficult as the story was to chip out of the rock, I grew to love it and the characters involved as I wrote. Every day brought something new and unexpected. Every conversation between Rita and her friends, family and co-workers was a revelation. Characters did and said things I wasn’t expecting, and I had no idea how the book was going to end until Rita and I got there together.

I don’t know about other writers, but for me, a hard-won book earns a very special place in my heart. The Cakes of Monte Cristo is going on that shelf, for sure. To make it even more special, the art department at Berkley Prime Crime did a terrific job with the cover. I love the dress cakes!

Thanks so much for having me. I hope you and your readers enjoy the book.

~Jacklyn

In the fresh new Piece of Cake Mystery from the national bestselling author of Rebel Without a Cake, a pastry chef becomes embroiled in a suspicious death as a mysterious curse casts a pall over an annual New Orleans ball.

Rita Lucero, co-owner of New Orleans’s Zydeco Cakes, is thrilled to be catering an annual ball held at the Monte Cristo Hotel. Designing the high-end desserts is her priority—until she stumbles upon a mystery long-buried at her shop. It’s an ornate ruby necklace, hidden underneath her staircase and rumored to be cursed.

After the gem’s appraiser suddenly drops dead and Rita herself is targeted by a menacing stranger, she’s no longer laughing at local superstition. Now with five cakes on order and an investigation into the necklace’s past revealing layers of unsettling clues, Rita has reason to keep looking over her shoulder while she’s frosting. Because any way you slice it, the next victim of the legendary curse could be her.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

I am so glad we finally return to New Orleans and Zydeco Cakes. The author set us up in Rebel Without A Cake for The Cakes of Monte Cristo and Rita and her staff are taking on their biggest job ever, the Belle Lune Ball.  They needed to bake 5 gorgeous dress form cakes complete with the accessories and they are catering the affair too. When the Monte Cristo Hotel ballroom is flooded just days before the event Rita has to settle for a smaller venue, but at least it is still in the same hotel. As if she doesn’t have enough on her plate, Zydeco is short staffed because Edie is out on maternity leave and the temps to replace her have been nightmares. Rita finally hires Estelle’s niece, Zoey. Rita vows to make it work even after a freak accident that destroys part of the beautiful old home that houses the business. Especially when a very interesting discovery is made. A discovery that leaves one woman dead and Rita extra cautious as she tries to piece together all the clues before she gets herself frosted.

I love this series! These characters are some of the best ones around. They work together from early morning until sometimes late at night. They go out for drinks together and have fun. They are as close as family and genuinely care about each other. Like family they have their little spats too. They also bake the most amazing cakes! The cover is nice but the picture I have in my head from the descriptions is nothing like on the cover. Rita makes so many peacock like feathers out of fondant and paints them all to look so real. The image is crystal clear in my mind along with all the other beautiful dress creations that were made. Thank you Jacklyn for the amazing imagery brought forth from your words.

The author not only paints us beautiful pictures with her words, she crafts quite a plot as well. She gives us plenty of twists, surprises, and a few tense moments before we reach the end. She introduces some new characters and one quickly got on Rita’s nerves and mine too, well frankly everyone around her. No, she wasn’t killed but I would not have been surprised. There is always the next book. 🙂

I do hope there is a next book, or two or three and we don’t have to wait too long for a return. Each of these characters “slice” of life has been delightful. If you haven’t taken a bite out of this series yet, start at the beginning and enjoy! You can thank me later.

In the still of the night…

Halloween is approaching, and the co-owners of Zydeco Cakes, Rita Lucero and her former mother-in-law, Miss Frankie, have scored a sweet treat—a fantastic catering opportunity that could lead to a rich future for their bakery. But their good news is quickly rattled by a bump in the night when Miss Frankie’s neighbor, Bernice, barrels into her kitchen toting a Bible and a gun, and serves up a story about a ghost at her window.

Bernice swears she just saw the ghost of her moonshiner uncle who disappeared in the swamp fifteen years ago. And when her cousin soon goes missing in the same swamp, Bernice is certain someone’s playing a nasty trick, and convinces Rita and Miss Frankie to help her investigate. They’ll just need to watch their steps, as these ladies are liable to get mired in a very swampy mystery…

INCLUDES DELICIOUS RECIPES

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Miss Frankie sure can get Rita into a lot of trouble and she does it up in spades in Rebel Without a Cake.  First she makes plans for Christmas without even asking Rita or thinking Rita may want to go home to visit her family for the holidays.

Then she sets her up with an appointment to cater a huge event, something Zydeco Cakes has never done before and they have less than 3 months to pull everything together and the woman in charge of the event is not making it easy.

On top of that Miss Frankie and her neighbor Bernice has Rita traveling back and forth from New Orleans to the swamp where Bernice’s family lives and they show up just in time to find a dead body.

Oh and how can I forget, things at Zydeco Cakes is crazy with Halloween orders and Edie is due to have her baby at any minute. She is definitely causing a bit of drama with all the employees.

That is a lot happening in one book so hold on tight and get ready for a wild ride!

I have come to love all these characters and all the baggage they bring with their lives. There can be disagreements, personal issues, time constraints and tons of pressure to produce awesome cakes that will make your mouth water, but through thick and thin there are there for each other no matter what.

We meet some new characters this time like Ox’s psychic aunt and all of Bernice’s family. All very interesting and some a little rude and some a little scary. Jacklyn Brady creates wonderful people to fill her stories. Very unique and some a little crazy but all of them come together in a fantastic story.

In  this installment we are not only dealing with the current mystery but the author is setting us up for the next book in this series. Thanksgiving, Christmas and the New Year are right around the corner.

The current mystery takes us deep into the bayou – gators can be anywhere and the pace is a little slower. Rita trusts the local law enforcement to catch the killer but she just can’t help but do a little investigating herself to try to hurry things along. I thought I had things figured out more than once and was cringing every time Rita was sticking her nose into things.  Of course Rita kept digging and she proved me wrong again. I loved it!

This is a series I recommend you read in order not only to get to know that cast of characters but also because the stories are so darn good. This is one of my favorite series for that very reason. There are fantastic subplots that continue through each book and each book is even better than the last. The tough part for me is waiting until next year to see what happens next!!

Casting Characters

by Jacklyn Brady

Jacklyn BradyI think the most common questions I get as an author are those about characters. How do I come up with my characters? Are they based on real people? Do I come up with characters or plot first? The answers, of course, always different for every book.

Years ago, when I first started writing, I worried about my characters because they never wanted to follow directions. I’d create someone to be shy and demure. She’d turn out to be loud and brassy. I’d set a story in the winter. The protagonist would climb up on his roof to replace shingles following a summer storm—and refuse to get down.

For a long time, I thought this was a sure sign that I’d never be a “real” writer and I CB029641nearly despaired of having a writing career. And then one day I read an article on characterization written by a multi-published mystery writer (one I particularly admired) in which she mentioned that her characters did the same thing. I read that article at least twenty times and finally started to think that maybe my headstrong characters might not be proof of failure after all.

The Cakes of WrathSince then, I’ve tried to give my characters free rein to be just what they are. I think my favorite books are those in which the author merely tells the characters’ truth, whatever it is. And that’s what I did in The Cakes of Wrath, the fourth outing for Rita Lucero, the protagonist in my Piece of Cake mystery series.

In the fourth book in the series we meet up again with Rita and spend time with most of the recurring characters in her world. Miss Frankie (Rita’s almost-ex-mother-in-law and business partner) is on the scene, as are the cake artists on staff at Zydeco Cakes: Ox, Isabeau, Estelle, Dwight, Sparkle and Edie. Gabriel Broussard from the Dizzy Duke makes an appearance, as well.

CB058493Speaking of recurring characters, I never planned for Ox to challenge Rita’s position at Zydeco, and I never know what he’s going to do next. Edie’s announcement at the end of Arsenic and Old Cake came as a complete surprise to me. I found out when the rest of the Zydeco crew did. In this book, I learned a few things I didn’t know about Sparkle.

We also meet a cast of new characters in The Cakes of Wrath. The story began to take root when I began to imagine a woman named Aquanettia Fisher. Several months before I began writing the story, I heard her first name in casual conversation. It grabbed my imagination and wouldn’t let go. For months, I wondered what someone named Aquanettia would be like. She could have been anyone, but in Rita’s world Aquanettia turned out to be the single mother of two adult sons, Isaiah and Keon. Both of her sons appeared in my imagination fully formed after I met their mother. Aquanettia runs a thrift shop called Second Chances, and she’s acting head of the Magnolia Street Small Business Alliance, of which Rita is a reluctant member.

MH900444846Other members of the alliance include the much-tattooed Moose Hazen, owner of the nearby Chopper Shop, and his wife Destiny, a woman with more problems than a person can shake a stick at. Destiny is the first person I “met” in the Hazen household and the moment I saw her in my imagination I knew she battled addiction. I’ve known a number of people who struggle with addiction over the years, so I recognized the tell-tale signs the instant she opened her mouth. In the beginning Moose was just a big guy with lots of muscles, but then he showed up for the alliance meeting and revealed all those tattoos. I was surprised at first, but that’s who Moose was, so I just stepped aside and let him go.

This time out we meet Miss Frankie’s cousin, Pearl Lee Gates. Yeah, I know her name is a little odd. I honestly didn’t plan it that way. She walked through the door at Zydeco and introduced herself, and that was that. There’s no arguing with Pearl Lee, as you’ll discover when you meet her for yourselves. Along with Pearl Lee, we meet her “special” friend, Scotty Justus, a retired commercial fisherman who also happens to be Destiny Hazen’s father.

MH900387543Also showing up is Zora Rappaport, owner of the Feathered Peacock yoga studio. I expected her to be a yoga enthusiast, but she set me straight soon enough. She hasn’t actually practiced yoga in years. Edgar Zappa from EZ Shipping is also a member of the alliance. He insisted on defending Destiny when others turned against her, but he wouldn’t tell me why for a long, long time. And then there’s Sebastian Walker, the neighborhood pharmacist. He’s a friendly guy who bears a completely unexpected resemblance to Will Ferrell.

I hope you’ll come and meet everyone in The Cakes of Wrath and that you enjoy getting to know them as much as I did.

~Jacklyn

Miss Frankie has decided Zydeco needs to join the local small business alliance and Rita needs to represent the business in addition to everything else she has to do. It should be a great way to meet more people in the neighborhood but the meetings seem to drag on forever with the members arguing over silly details.

After one heated meeting Rita and Moose, the owner of Chopper Shop, are discussing an upcoming project when a van comes speeding at them. Moose’s quick reaction saves them both from being hit by the van but Rita is pretty bruised up from hitting the ground and most of Moose landing on top of her. The doctor prescribes some pain medication but the next day when Rita really needs them she can’t find them anywhere. She remembers Destiny, Moose’s wife, being in her office the day before. Destiny has a history of drug use so Rita decides to track her down. She is too late. When she arrives at the Chopper Shop she finds Destiny dead with the pill bottle in her hand. Suicide or murder? The detective on the case decides right away that Rita is involved and refuses to believe anything Rita or anyone else tells him. She needs to find the truth herself before she is baking cakes behind bars.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Jaclyn Brady has baked up another tasty mystery!

I love these characters. Rita, Miss Frankie, Ox, Edie and Sparkle are joined by some very crazy characters in this installment. Pearl Lee, Sonny, Moose, Zora, Aquanetta and more.  What a group! Pearl Lee just cracked me up. Edie has her own drama with her parents not very happy with her situation and Miss Frankie gets right in the middle of everything. Add to this a busy cakery, a neighborhood clean-up project and a dead body and you have everything you need for a great cozy mystery.

The author really had me puzzled with this one. A couple of suspects really stood out and then the clues started to stack up just like cake tiers and it all made perfect sense.

I really enjoy the subplots that continue from book to book. The surprises at the very end that leave you wanting the next piece of cake…um…next book…right now!

a perfect escape

Cake on a Hot Tin Roof (A Piece of Cake Mystery #2)

Pastry chef Rita Lucero is still learning the ropes at Zydeco Cakes, the bakery she inherited from her ex-husband. Her second in command is trying to give the bakery an online presence and hounding Rita every day to start a blog. Add that to it’s carnival season in New Orleans and they are filling tons of orders for King cakes and Rita is expected to host a Mardi Gras party for hundreds of her ex’s closet friends. Then  as if she doesn’t have enough to do she gets an unexpected visit  from her aunt Yolanda and Uncle Nestor. How in the world is she going to get everything done and entertain then too?

Well at least she can take them to the Mardi Gras party. A great idea until Big Daddy Boudreaux, a local celebrity/car salesman, winds up dead at the party after having a very public altercation with Uncle Nestor. Now Rita needs to add “find the real killer” to her already overflowing To-Do-List. And there are no shortage of other suspects. Let the good times roll!

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Chaos reigned in this installment of the Piece of Cake Mysteries. I was exhausted just trying to keep up with Rita. Plus she kept her temper better than I ever would if relatives just dropped in at the busiest time of year.

I was a little disappointed in Uncle Nestor. I knew he was upset about Rita staying in New Orleans but he should have been more supportive of her role at Zydeco cakes. Proud that she was running a successful business. He did have a lot on his mind and by the end of the story I had started to forgive him just a bit.

I must say the vast number of suspects made this mystery very complex. Each time I thought I had figured it out I was wrong.

Another tasty treat from Jacklyn Brady. Scroll down to see my review of Arsenic and Old Cake just released on November 6.

Arsenic and Old Cake

The bad economy is hurting business at Zydeco Cakes. Rita is trying to come up with ideas to keep her business afloat and her employees working full time. Her attention is drawn away when a friend, Old Dog Leg Magee, a blind trumpet player, asks her to be his eyes and help him solve a mystery. She can’t say no. She has juggled a variety of issues before, she can do this.

Old Dog Leg has received a letter from someone claiming to be his long lost brother and needs Rita to find out if the man is really his brother Monroe. He has set Rita up with bartender Gabriel Broussard to pose as newlyweds to check in to the same bed & breakfast where Monroe is staying. Staying in a room with the handsome bartender worries Rita plenty, but the dead body found outside their room’s windows means there maybe two mysteries to solve. Could the man they are investigating be a murderer? Rita is determined to find out, even if it means putting herself in danger.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

This is my favorite book in this series! The quirky characters, residents of the B & B, are fantastic and funny, and full of secrets, some deadly secrets.

Using the real state of economics right now and how it is hurting luxury type purchases like the pricey custom cakes made at Zydeco gives the story a credible and relevant feel. Businesses are tightening the belts and being innovative to add and keep customers just like Rita and her employees. Some ideas are better than others and having a well off partner makes things a little easier for the New Orleans bakery. Miss Frankie is a peach.

The romantic tension jumped up a notch in the edition as well. I loved it and I don’t know who I really want to see Rita with but both Rita and I were quite drawn to the sexy Cajun bartender. It sure makes me anxious waiting for the next installment.

I highly recommend this story and this series. They are full of mystery, mayhem and way too many delectable treats. Recipes included. Yummy!!!!
