Dollycas’s Thoughts

Jessica Fletcher is headed to Boston to give a talk at the Boston Public Library, and she invites her friend,  Dr. Seth Hazlitt, to accompany her. He plans to catch up with some of his colleagues while he is there, and they both look forward to having dinner with PI Harry McGraw at Gilhooley’s.

Harry has an interesting new case he thinks Seth can help him with, and Jessica agrees to help Gilhooley’s bartender with an investigation Harry can’t take on right now. Cookie is worried about his daughter Aileen’s boyfriend and his true intentions. Before Jessica can even form a plan, Alieen shows up at the tavern, shaking and covered in blood. She states her boyfriend is dead. She found his body in his apartment and ran to her father for help. She soon finds herself the prime suspect in his murder and needs Jessica’s help more than ever.

Every so often, Jessica Fletcher leaves Cabot Cove and travels to interesting places. This time, she and Seth visited Boston, where they stayed at the Revere Hotel Boston Common, and visited interesting places like the Boston Public Library, the Tea Party Museum, Bromer Booksellers, a comedy club, and even biked through the Public Garden. The author describes each place so thoroughly that she takes her readers on a virtual vacation.

I love the new people Jessica meets in each story. She and Seth hooked up with their own private cab driver. Mahmood was at their beck and call to take them anywhere they needed to go. He was fun and enjoyed tagging along on their adventures. Cookie is a great guy and a protective father. He would do anything for his daughter. Aileen thought she was in love, but her boyfriend was pretty sleezy. I was not surprised he was our victim. His demise brought some interesting characters into the story. The murder also brings Lieutenant Starkey back into Jessica’s life.

As expected, the murder mystery was very well-plotted and written. The pacing was perfect. The blending of storylines flowed seamlessly.  It’s always intriguing to tag along as Jessica works through the clues using her connections and making new ones. It seemed each new clue and twist brought a new or different suspect into the limelight. I changed my mind too many times to count. I really enjoyed that Seth was Aileen’s champion. As her doctor, he understood the shock she had and made sure her needs were met. Before any questioning was done or visitation of the crime scene happened, he took time to check her out and protect her well-being.

If you were a fan of the television show like I was, it is very easy to escape into the story and see the actors who played the characters, and hear the words in their voices.

Murder, She Wrote: A Body in Boston is another excellent addition to this long-running series. They are even more special because each one can be read as a standalone. If you have never read any books in this series, missed a few, or more than a few, you can grab this one and discover or rediscover a series that stands the test of time. Jessica Fletcher is a cozy mystery icon, and Ms. Farley is an expert in bringing her and all her friends to life. 61 books and still going strong! Book 62, Murder, She Wrote: The Body in the Trees, will be released December 2, 2025.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Cabot Cove is pulling out all the stops for Christmas this year as they are vying to be named Christmas Town in Maine’s tourist brochure. Many events are planned including Christmas caroling parties, readings, cookies, along with visiting elves, a boat parade, and a Christmas Day Parade.

While most of the residents of Cabot Cove are working on plans for the holiday, Realtor Eve Simpson has another iron in the fire. She has found a buyer for the old Jarvis homestead. Boston tycoon John Bragdon is ready to sign on the dotted line and get renovations started immediately. Then a man thought to be dead because he has been missing for years returns to town. Kenny Jarvis is back and he is livid that his sister was trying to sell their childhood home.  He plans to stop her at any cost.

Eve basically ignores all the drama and organizes a dinner to welcome John Bragdon and his wife Rose Marie to Cabot Cove.  She invites many of the town’s prominent citizens including Jessica Fletcher and Dr. Seth Hazlitt and the Bragdons bring several of their employees.

A couple of days later Kenny finds Rose Marie at Hill House and threatens her saying the woman will never live in his family’s home. Just a few hours later Rose Marie is found dead in her room. The easy assumption is that Kenny Jarvis is responsible for the woman’s death but Jessica believes it will be someone else’s holiday that will be ruined. She just needs to figure out who.

Christmas in Cabot Cove didn’t disappoint. All my favorite characters were back. The author brings them all to life so well. So much so, that I hear their voices loud and clear as if I watching an episode of the television show. Jessica is a dynamic character with a keen mind. She gets along with everyone and volunteers to help in any way she can. This time she was fully involved in the Christmas festivities in the quest to make Cabot Cove, the Christmas town. She gets her friends involved too, sometimes when they don’t want to be. 🙂 She juggles it all even when she gets caught up in another murder.

Readers were introduced to some interesting new characters too. All unique, they quickly develop throughout the story with some finding their names on Jessica’s suspect list.

The story unfolds at a very comfortable pace. I enjoyed following along with Jessica on all her tasks. Surprisingly while doing a common everyday task she had her A-ha moment making all the clues fall into place. I gave myself a quick pat on the back for being right. I had pinned down the killer earlier in the story but wasn’t positive about how they did it.

I loved everything about this cozy mystery. Cabot Cove is the ultimate cozy town all decked out in its Christmas finery and Ms. Moran captures it all with her wonderful descriptions. The residents of this cozy town feel like old friends, fresh and genuine after almost 60 books penned by different authors. It takes a special author who can capture the characters and continue their storylines seamlessly. Ms. Moran does an excellent job. She also plotted an intriguing mystery bringing out her reader’s armchair sleuthing skills.  And after the murder mystery was solved Jessica got her wish. I treasure a happy ending.

Murder, She Wrote: A Killer Christmas is sure to get you in the Christmas spirit with a little murder mystery to solve on the side. Festive, fun, and heartwarming. I truly recommend you visit Cabot Cove this holiday season.

Jessica Fletcher’s British cousin, Emma MacGill, will be traveling to Edmonton in Alberta, Canada, to perform with internationally famous star of stage, screen, and television Derek Braverman in an old-fashioned musical review. Emma would love for Jessica to join her there and suggests she bring along some friends. Having just finished her latest book, Jessica is ready for a vacation and is delighted to agree. Dr. Seth Hazlitt and Sheriff Mort Metzger are huge fans of Braverman, so they are eager to tag along, and their fanboy behavior gives Jessica and Mort’s wife, Maureen, more than occasional cause to roll their eyes.

Upon arrival in Edmonton, Jessica is quickly outed as mystery writer J. B. Fletcher, and despite numerous protests, a hotel staffer arranges a book signing for her. This and touristy adventures arranged for the group make for a much busier trip than Jessica was expecting. When a hotel bartender, who also happens to be a stagehand for Emma’s play, turns up dead backstage at the theater, Jessica’s fun and relaxing vacation quickly becomes anything but.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Now that her latest book is finished Jessica Fletcher is ready for a break. Her cousin Emma MacGill is traveling from the UK to Edmonton in Alberta, Canada to take part in an old-fashioned musical review. Derek Braverman is an internationally famous star of screen, television, and stage and is ready to retire but he wants one more big show and has invited Emma to be part of it. Emma would love for Jessica to be there for opening night. Emma even invites Dr. Seth Hazlitt, Sheriff Mort Metzger, and his wife Maureen. Seth and Mort are big fans of Derek Braverman so they are thrilled to go on the trip. Maureen is excited too.

Jessica hoping to fly under the radar and just have a good time is saddened that she is immediately recognized as mystery author J. B. Fletcher but she is even more upset that a member of the hotel staff assumes that she would be willing to have a book signing at the hotel gift shop. She explains several times she is not there to work, she is on vacation and has no plans to do a book signing. The staffer has also arranged for Jessica, Seth, Mort, and Maureen to take in the sights of Edmonton.

As if Jessica doesn’t have enough on her plate, a hotel bartender and stagehand for Emma’s musical review is found dead backstage at the theater. She suddenly finds herself and her friends investigating his murder. So much for a fun-filled vacation.  Can Jessica go anywhere and not find a murder mystery to solve?

It was so good to see Jessica, Seth, Maureen, and Mort get away from Cabot Cove for a little vacation. They all deserved it. The murder didn’t happen until about 33% into the book so they did get to see some sights before the investigation began. What I really enjoy is that as a fan of the television series, I easily visualize the characters and hear their voices in my head.

Since Jessica didn’t really know the deceased or any of the cast and crew she needed her cousin’s help. While the show rehearsals didn’t stop, they did move to another location, so Emma wasn’t available very often forcing Jessica to get to know all the players/suspects in other ways. Readers are introduced to all these characters and the author does an excellent job of making each unique and memorable. Emma being an almost twin to Jessica was fun.

The murder mystery was very well-plotted with plenty of twists and turns. There was also the mystery of items missing from the hotel including Seth’s prized pen. Jessica and her friends taking on an investigation in Edmonton was a delight especially when Sergeant Enook was familiar with the books of J. B. Fletcher. She knew Jessica wasn’t going to sit idly by. It was great that Jessica, Emma, and the Sergeant were together when a major clue came from an unexpected place. What was even better was the way the Canadian police, Jessica, and Cabot Cove Sheriff Mort worked together to get the evidence they needed to make the arrest. I was totally surprised when the killer was revealed.

I really enjoyed touring around Edmonton, Alberta, Canada with my fictional friends from Cabot Cove. Their driver Rob was a fantastic guide with his knowledge about the places to see and the area’s history. I would love to visit someday.

Murder, She Wrote: Murder Backstage was an entertaining read with the wonderful Jessica Fletcher solving another first-rate mystery. With the author’s comfortable writing style and familiar characters it was easy to escape right into this latest Murder, She Wrote mystery.

Each book in this series reads well on its own, so don’t think twice about starting with or jumping back in with Murder, She Wrote: Murder Backstage.

I loved this wonderful mystery. I loved how well this book was written to bring Jessica and all her friends from Cabot Cove back to life. I loved how she and her friends are able to solve a murder and what happened to many missing items. I loved the humor!
