Now that Grace Wheaton has officially been named heir to Bennett Marshfield’s fortune, her usually busy schedule has become a juggling act. In addition to her duties at Marshfield Manor, she’s bankrolling her roommates’ refurbished wine shop, Amethyst Cellars. Grace is excited to check out the rustic space with Bruce and Scott. But that excitement turns to dismay when they stumble upon the body of the banker involved with the sale.

Grace wants to get to the bottom of this mystery quickly so that her friends’ new venture isn’t overshadowed by an unsolved murder, but she’s got even more to balance when her troubled sister, Liza, is released from prison early. Liza’s first stop is Marshfield Manor and her first priority is grabbing a bite of Bennett’s fortune for herself. Grace has to keep her greedy sister at bay and catch a killer before her new life comes crashing down around her.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Grace Wheaton is learning her new role as heir to Bennett Marshfield’s fortune. She and Bennett work together so she can become familiar with everything in his life especially Marshfield Manor. She is also the not so silent partner in her roommates wine shop, Amethyst Cellars. They have purchased a building and are just starting on their plans to not only open their wine store again but opening a restaurant in the building too. Add to that her sister, Liza, is being released from prison early and plans to stake her claim for her share of Bennett’s money immediately. As if that isn’t enough Grace, Bruce and Scott find find a dead body in their new building. So even though Frances seems to think Grace needs a new man in her life, she is going to have to solve the murder and straighten out her sister before she can even think of anything like that.

Julie Hyzy has created truly wonderful characters in this series. They are characters that are so engaging that it is easy to become involved in everything they do. Grace, Bennett and even Frances’ relationships have grown so much since the beginning.  Bruce and Scott have really evolved too.  Aunt Belinda and Liza bring their own craziness to this story. We learn their real backstory and more about Grace’s family in this installment and it is quite interesting.

The murder mystery is very well plotted and timely for the world today. Grace is like a dog with a bone as she tries to fit all the pieces together. A homeless man may have the final clue to help everything fall into place. A subplot to this mystery is that Joe is holding something back from Grace. She doesn’t know if she can trust him and she may just have to give up on the relationship they have been working hard to build.

I was and still am sad that the author announced earlier this month that this is the last book in the series. I understand she wants to take her writing in a different direction. She does leave everyone in a good place but not everything is complete. I would love to be at the grand reopening for Amethyst Cellars, or see how more of Marshfield Manor is opened to the public, and find out if Grace did find that forever love. I know the door is closed for now, but I can hope Julie may revisit the Manor someday in the future. If not we say goodbye to some amazing characters and are blessed by the short time we got to spend with them.

Another perfect escape from Julie Hyzy!

Grace Wheaton, curator and manager of Marshfield Manor, and her benefactor, Bennett Marshfield, are discussing how to help her roommates Bruce and Scott with their wine shop troubles when Grace’s trusted—if testy—assistant, Frances, calls, saying she needs some assistance of her own. Arriving at the address Frances has given them, they find a coroner’s van and police cars parked outside an upscale assisted-living facility called Indwell.

One of the elderly residents has been found dead under suspicious circumstances, and Frances, seen arguing with the man earlier that day, is now a person of interest. It’s up to Grace to clear her assistant’s name and find the real killer—before another Indwell resident checks out early…

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Oh this story was sooooooo goooooood!

In this installment the action takes place away from Marshfield Manor. Grace’s assistant, Frances needs help. We finally get a close look at Frances’ life away from work and it was quite surprising. Also Grace’s roommates, Bruce and Scott have a major problem and it could be the end of their business.

I love these characters. The relationship between Bennett and Grace always warms my heart and now that the news is out that they truly are related there are many new t’s to cross and i’s to dot. They are both amazing people. The world needs more people like them. I loved that Frances was front and center in this story and I always enjoy catching up with Scott and Bruce.

Hyzy introduces us to a great group of quirky characters as we venture to Indwell, an assisted living facility. We meet patients, their families, staff and even a couple of local detectives. The descriptions made it so easy to picture every one of them. They sure are an interesting bunch.

The mystery this time was quite puzzling. Several twists had me changing my mind on the real culprit too many times to count. As we neared the conclusion I could see I was completely wrong and I was totally surprised.

When you reach the 7th book in a series the characters have become comfortable. As a reader you are engaged from the start and totally invested into finding out what happens next. That is so true for this series. Frances may not be the easiest woman to get along with but I was thrilled to know more about her personal life. I am excited to see what the author has planned for my fictional friends in upcoming installments.

Each visit to Emberstowne passes too quickly. Of course that is because the story keeps those pages flying. As usual I read this one all in one sitting.

I highly recommend everything Julie Hyzy writes and this story is a prime example as to why.

Pepper’s new wedding proposal planning business, Perfect Proposals, seems like a perfect fit. If only shopping for her sister Felicity’s bridal gown could be so simple.

After a long day of lace, tulle, and tears, Pepper, Felicity, and their mother pull it together to try one last bridal boutique. Maybe they’ll be surprised. And indeed they are—when they enter a deserted shop and soon discover the owner of the boutique slain in the alley out back.

Distressed by their proximity to the crime, Pepper vows to unveil the killer. As difficult as it is to draw a pattern from the clues, it’s still easier than finding Felicity’s perfect wedding gown. But as the killer begins to feel hemmed in, Pepper may be the one brought to her knees…

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Shopping for a wedding dress is supposed to be fun but it can be quite stressful to find the “perfect” dress. Pepper knows shopping with her sister, Felicity, for her dress is going to interesting but she never expected that when they arrived for their last appointment the shop’s owner would be dead. Dead, as in murdered in the alley behind the boutique. They had arrived a little late and Pepper feels if they would have been on time they could have saved the woman. But they also could have become collateral damage. She just can’t help doing a little investigating on her own and that could end no where near perfect.

Pepper’s business sounds like a really great job. Her business, Perfect Proposals, sets up events for the perfect engagement proposals. It is always a surprise to the party being proposed to. It can be a proposal while skydiving, or at a movie theater, or anything the couple likes to do. Pepper wants the proposal to be special and she works hard to make that happen. Her business is taking off now that people have heard about her sister’s proposal. The whole family dynamic rings so true for me. I love her mom, very opinionated, and dad, knows when to back off, the sister, a little over the top.

I really enjoyed this story. A little twist has the detective in charge of the case actually happy with the information Pepper is providing. The suspects all seem to be family, an employee and her boyfriend, but Pepper just can’t figure out why they would want the woman dead. She is determined and goes back to the shop several times trying to get the answers she needs. I liked the way she handled it though, she always had a good reason to be there, dress fitting, payment on the dress, etc. And she purchased one pricey maid of honor dress! good thing they had a payment plan.

The mystery itself was well written and entertaining but I enjoyed the Perfect Proposal planning and events just as much. Together there was always action and drama making the pages absolutely fly.

It should be noted that while Nancy J. Parra is the name on the cover, Nancy, who also writes as Nancy Coco and Julie Hyzy, of the Manor House Mysteries, work in conjunction to write this series. I enjoy their other series’ so it is not a surprise to me that enjoy their writing together as well. The know how to set the scene, create realistic characters, and put them in drama filled situations. The also know how to add the perfect amount of humor to their stories.

This Perfect Proposals Mystery is a perfect escape!

White House Chef Mystery Trivia!

To celebrate the ninth installment in the White House Chef Mystery series, I’ve come up with nine all-new trivia questions. Test your knowledge about Ollie and the gang for fun and bragging rights (answers below).

In State of the Onion, the First Lady must decide who to name as executive chef when Henry retires. There’s no doubt that Henry prefers Ollie succeed him, but who else is in the running for the top job?

a. Martha Stewart

b. Laurel Anne Braun

c. Julia Child

d. Buckminster (Bucky) Reed

2. Hail to the Chef is the second book in the White House Chef series, but many readers pick it up mistakenly believing it to be the first in the series (meaning: they haven’t read State of the Onion). What is the number one comment/complaint I’ve received via email from this group of readers?

a. New readers don’t believe that an underground bunker exists in the White House

b. New readers think that Marcel’s gingerbread White House is too big

c. New readers have an issue with (fictional) President Campbell

d. New readers don’t immediately realize that Ollie is female

3. Which members of Ollie’s family do we meet for the first time in Eggsecutive Orders?

a. her brother and father

b. her mother and nana

c. her sister and cousin

d. her twin nephews

4. There is an “oops” moment in Buffalo West Wing that occurs near the end of the book. While there is a logical explanation for the reappearance of a formerly lost item, that explanation isn’t provided on the page. What is the item in question?

a. Ollie’s cell phone

b. Ollie’s diary

c. Ollie’s house keys

d. Bucky’s favorite knife

5. Peter Everett Sargeant despises Ollie, yet he’s required to work closely with her in Affairs of Steak. Someone close to the persnickety fellow plays a key role in the story. What’s the character’s name and how is he related to Sargeant?

a. Doug, Sargeant’s cousin

b. Ferdinand, Sargeant’s dog

c. Milton, Sargeant’s nephew

d. Frank, Sargeant’s son

6. What about the story line made Fonduing Fathers unique?

a. Ollie investigated a personal matter

b. The story opened in Chicago

c. Ollie took some vacation time

d. All of the above

7. What’s unique about the cover of Home of the Braised?

a. It’s the first book of mine to feature the words “New York Times Bestselling Author”

b. It’s mostly red

c. There are four words in the title

d. It’s a different size

8. What absolutely awful title was suggested for Book #8 before Berkley settled on All the President’s Menus?

a. Plate of the Union

b. War and Peas

c. Need to know Basil

d. Star Spangled Banana

9. Speaking of titles, although I really like Foreign Eclairs, I’d originally suggested something else entirely – a title I thought fit the storyline nicely. Berkley disagreed. What was my suggestion?

a. White House Dressing

b. A Bombe in Nation

c. Bread of State

d. A Salt on Freedom

ANSWERS:

  • b – Laurel Anne Braun is Ollie’s nasty (and sometimes comical) nemesis in this first book
  • d – I had quite a few people write to let me know that they believed Ollie to be male for the first chapter or so of the book
  • b – Ollie’s mom and nana make their first appearance in Eggsecutive Orders
  • a – Ollie’s cell phone gets flushed but then later, she (miraculously) receives a text. What actually happened (though not explained in the book) is that the White House quickly replaced her lost cell. Oops!
  • c – We meet Milton in Affairs of Steak. He’s Sargeant’s adult ne’er-do-well nephew.
  • d – All of the above. I loved this storyline because we got to know more about Ollie’s family and especially her deceased father. Most readers seemed to love it, too, though there were a handful who voiced their disappointment that Ollie didn’t spend more time at the White House during this installment.
  • a – Yay!!
  • d – The original title for this book could have been (ugh!!) Star Spangled Banana. Doesn’t that sound silly and slapstick? I despised the idea so much, I begged Berkley to drop it. Fortunately, they did. Whew!
  • b – As much as I lobbied for A Salt On Freedom for several other installments (including Book #8), I believed A Bombe in Nation would have made an ideal title for :::ahem::: explosive Book #9. Berkley disagreed, but that’s okay. Foreign Eclairs is a great title, too.

Thank you so much for your interest in Ollie and the gang! I truly appreciate all your wonderful support over the years.

As you may know by now, Foreign Eclairs, the ninth White House Chef Mystery, will be the last one in the series that I write. Whether the series continues without me is anyone’s guess, but if you’re curious as to why I’m stepping away, I invite you to visit my blog http://juliehyzy.blogspot.com/2015/12/all-good-things.html

White House executive chef Ollie Paras has served plenty of meals to foreign dignitaries from around the world. But someone is ready to serve her an ice-cold dish of revenge. . .

Things are about to really heat up for Ollie. News of a bombing and attempted breakout at a federal prison reveals that the brother of a terrorist she helped defeat is back with a vengeance. And after she gets mugged on her way home from work, the Secret Service won’t leave her side, fearing that she is now a target.

When a White House staff member is murdered, officials rush into action over a possible security breach. It may be time for Ollie to trade in her apron for a bullet-proof vest as she becomes part of a bold strategy to make sure this terrorist gets his just desserts. . .

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Most times we don’t know that a book series is ending or has come to an end. The author is informed and sometimes they have the option of continuing the series on their own, but most of the time the reader is left in the dark. Social media has changed that some, in that the authors can stay in touch with their readers and give us a heads up. Even when we get a heads up the characters/authors are usually left without a chance to wrap up their stories.

Julie Hyzy blogged back in December that Foreign Eclairs would be the last book in this series and explained why. This is one of my very favorite series so I was sad, but after reading her post I am thankful for the nine adventures we did have with Ollie.

Hyzy does not have Ollie leave us quietly either. This cozy crept right into the suspense/thriller genre and when I reached the final word all I could say was WOW!!!

The story started with a bomb explosion in Wisconsin so I was immediately on high alert. From there I just held on tight.

In D.C. Ollie and head usher, Peter Everett Sargeant, are holding interviews for a new chef, first son, Josh isn’t visiting the kitchen as much, and Gav is off on assignment. Then Ollie is attacked on her way home, she is okay, but her purse was stolen. Then a White House staffer is found dead after she was clearly tortured.  Agent Neville Walker, the new head of the Secret Service, thinks the two events may be connected. Another bombing solidifies his thinking. After a little investigating it is determined the Armustanian terrorists are to blame and Ollie may be the target. Ollie doesn’t have much time for cooking this time as she is trying to save her life and maybe others. She also needs to figure out what is going on with Josh. Definitely not a woman with time on her hands.

The story starts with a slow build but soon we are going at breakneck speed just hoping our protagonist is alive at the end. I started this story in the evening. Thankfully I found the perfect stopping point so I could sleep. Good thing too, because when I picked it up the next day there was no putting it down. Things got really intense and the pages just flew. There were the normal things we come to expect in this mystery series, Bucky and Ollie in the White House kitchen planning meals, Ollie butting heads with Sargeant over the way the kitchen should be run, and Ollie and Gav still adjusting to married life and him being gone so much. But this being the last installment written by Hyzy, she had to tie things up but still leave the door open a crack just in case someone else is hired to continue the series. She did it in an amazing way and true fans will understand. I hope this is that last we see of Ollie as I don’t think anyone else could do this character justice.

So we say good bye to our behind the scenes access to the White House and I say thank you to Julie Hyzy for giving us so many wonderful stories and some truly memorable characters.

This book gets my first Paradise Rating of 2016!

special guest blueI am thrilled to welcome Julie Hyzy back to Escape With Dollycas.
Grace Cries Uncle was released this week!

Grace Cries Uncle
Julie Hyzy

The time has come. Finally.

For those who have followed the Manor House series from the first book, Grace Under Pressure, you know that there’s a very big question that hasn’t been answered yet: Is Grace, the young woman who came to work at Marshfield Manor a few years ago, truly related to billionaire Bennett Marshfield? Could Bennett actually be Grace’s half-uncle? And if so, could this new information inspire Bennett to change his Will?

There are two things in Grace Cries Uncle that I guarantee. One is that the above questions will be answered, and two is that there’s much more to the story than results from a DNA test can offer.

Readers who met Grace in Book #1 know that her younger sister, Liza, is trouble. When she shows up in this new adventure, Liza is down on her luck (again) and eager to enlist Grace’s help. Grace knows better than to trust her, but because an FBI agent recently came looking for Liza’s estranged husband Eric, and because that FBI agent turned up dead, Grace believes she has no choice but to offer her conniving sister a safe place to stay.

Is this a mistake? Or an incredibly shrewd move on Grace’s part? And what does all this have to do with Bennett? Because—as it becomes clear—Eric may be more involved in Bennett’s business than anyone realizes. A prestigious antique collectors’ convention has descended on Emberstowne just as Bennett reveals he’s hoping to acquire a specific, unnamed antique. Could Liza’s lowlife husband know something about the item’s whereabouts?

Grace Cries Uncle is my favorite book in my Manor House series thus far because we get to meet the troublesome Liza and her unsavory husband, Eric. We also begin to understand why Grace longs to be part of a real family—Bennett’s family. I hope you enjoy reading this latest installment as much as I enjoyed writing it!

The New York Times bestselling author of the Manor House Mysteries and the White House Chef Mysteries shows how a blast from the past can spell trouble for Grace Wheaton…

When Grace’s estranged sister Liza shows up on her doorstep, the timing couldn’t be worse. Grace’s beloved boss and benefactor, Bennett Marshfield, has finally gotten her to agree to a DNA test to establish if he is, in fact, her uncle. If so, Grace would move from being the trusted curator and manager of Marshfield Manor to Bennett’s heir. And her duplicitous sister would be right behind her in the line of inheritance.

Liza is not the only mysterious visitor to arrive in town. A man claiming to be an FBI agent has shown up, and a swarm of avaricious antique collectors have descended on Emberstowne for a prestigious convention. When Bennett reveals he’s in mind to acquire a secret antique and the FBI agent turns up dead, the plot thickens. And Grace can’t help but wonder if Liza is at the center of it all…

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Julie Hyzy continues to amaze me. Each new story tops the last an then some.

This time we split our time between Marshfield Manor and Grace’s Painted Lady. Grace’s sister, Liza, makes a return appearance and she has trouble preceding her too. The part I was most excited for was something readers of this series have been waiting so long to find out. Are Grace and the wonderful Bennett Marshfield truly related? Liza’s visit may throw a wrench into that whole situation. As always Frances, Grace’s assistant, is on hand to help and give her own unique spin to all the antics.

Hyzy has created a group of wonderful and quirky characters. They all jump right off the page and into our hearts. I truly wish I had a Bennett Marshfield in my life and not because of his money. He is a true gentleman and will love Grace whether or not the tests show she is his niece. He cares about all the people around him and treats his employees very well. Grace worries about him and loves him no matter what the future holds. It is very refreshing to see a wonderful friendship like theirs.

Their story is joined by one heck of mystery that not only brings Liza back to town but Grace’s ex, and Liza’s husband, Eric, too with the FBI hot on their tail. Emberstowne is hosting a convention that brings a bunch of lofty antique collectors to town as well. It seems everyone is talking about a very precious artifact and some would actually kill to have it in their collection. Be prepared for whiplash as the twists and turns to this mystery will send you reeling.

I love this series! I love the characters! I love the setting! I hated for this story to end. I am sad that I have to wait until next summer to visit Marshfield Manor and Emberstowne again. It is a place I would love to spend much more of my time 🙂

With the pressure of an upcoming state dinner that could make or break the president’s foreign policy, White House executive chef Olivia Paras has precious little time to focus on her wedding plans—or to catch a murderer…

A new Chief Usher and a very important State Dinner has Ollie, Cyan and Bucky hopping and Virgil being his usual unhelpful self.  Gav is slowly recovering from the last foray with Ollie. But it is hard to keep a good man down. He wants to get married as soon as possible. With the courts being booked with civil ceremonies for weeks he hopes an old agent friend, Evan, can help them out. When Ollie and Gav arrive to meet with him they find him and four other people dead. Gav is determined to find out why his friend was killed but then the Secretary of Defense is murdered and Gav and Ollie start to connect the dots as do the Secret Service and all the other alphabet agencies. Security is increased but will it be enough? Can they figure out the real target and stop the killer in time?

Dollycas’s Thoughts
After I finish a Julie Hyzy book I always think this is the best one yet and then she goes on to top herself with the next story. This one was just plain AWESOME!!

Chasing Ollie around The White House and Washington I was even out of breathe. She really doesn’t want to be in the middle of all the investigations and tribulations but she just naturally ends up there. They should just make her an honorary member of the Secret Service.

Thankfully Bucky and Cyan can keep that kitchen going because she is not only busy tracking down criminals but dealing with internal politics over her kitchen staff, all while trying to plan even a small wedding. She also has fun tutoring the President’s son Josh as he would like to be a chef someday himself. Ollie even lets him assist in the preparations for the big state dinner, even if he means 2 Secret Service agents taking up space in the already too small kitchen space.

So much happens in this story. There is drama, dead bodies, food, intrigue, humor, foot chases, corruption, more food, secrets, politics, twists, turns, even more food and something very special. I didn’t know I could turn pages or read as fast as I did. I had chills, I laughed and I can’t believe I even shed a few tears.

You just can’t go wrong with a book by Julie Hyzy. If she is a new author to you start at the beginning with State of the Onion, you will love each and every one. If you are already a fan, run, don’t walk, and get your copy today!! I cannot wait to get my hands on the next installment. Julie, write faster 🙂

cozy wednesday

Welcome to Cozy Wednesday!

I am excited today to have Julie Hyzy drop by for a short Q & A. I will also share my review of
Fonduing Fathers (A White House Chef Mystery).
I just love it when Julie comes to visit!!

Hi Julie!

Hi Everyone!

julie hyzy

1. What is the best thing about writing a series set at The White House?
When I was a kid, history class was boring. I didn’t care what year a war started or when treaties were signed. Today, I find history fascinating. I particularly enjoy U.S. history and especially love learning anything to do with the White House. Writing these books has encouraged me to learn more about the residence and its families than any class ever could. By placing Ollie in the heart of the home, I’m wrapped in all its glory and magnificence. Researching has become a true joy.

2. What is the worst thing about writing a set at The White House?
By far, the worst thing is that I can’t just run into the president’s home and take a look around whenever I feel like it. Visiting the White House is a big deal and there are a bunch of hoops to jump through before you’re allowed in. Even then, no purse, no pen, no paper, no camera. And most of the building is off-limits. I want to see everything, including secret little spots no one knows about. I’d love it if I could spend hours there, wandering anywhere I pleased.

3. When did you know that you wanted to become an author?
I’d have to say at about age six. I started writing my first books back then. I guess I just always wanted to tell stories. Even as I grew and became an adult, the desire to become an author never left. I was determined to be the youngest published author anywhere, and I decided I’d hit it big by the time I was eleven. That didn’t happen, of course. But I never gave up.

4. What are you reading for fun right now?
As much as I love cozy mysteries, I try not to read them when I’m writing one of my own. I’ve got two books I’m reading for fun right now: The Fiery Cross (Outlander) by Diana Gabaldon, and my youngest daughter’s first novel, a dystopian YA adventure. It’s pretty good!

5. If money was no object and you could escape to anywhere in the world to write where would you go and what do you think the book would be about?
Europe, I think. All over the continent. I was there, once, a couple of years ago and I found it incredibly beautiful and rich with history. I have family in Luxembourg and that country is – though small – amazing. I loved every moment there, and in Italy, and in France, especially along the Normandy coast. My guess is that I’d write about an American in Europe who stumbles over a dead body and needs to rely on her amateur sleuthing skills to save the day. Pretty original there, huh?

Thanks Julie for giving us a little peek at the author behind the stories.

Fonduing Fathers (A White House Chef Mystery, #6)

White House executive chef Olivia Paras has enough on her plate. But after gaining new information about her father’s death, the First Family isn’t the only family Olivia is concerned about…

A trip home for Ollie changes everything she knew about her father. Her mother reveals that he was actually dishonorably discharged from the army. He went on to work for a dietary supplement company but was brutally murdered because someone thought he was selling corporate secrets. This doesn’t fit anything she knew about her father and she knew there had to be more to his story. With Gav’s help she is determined get to the truth even if it threatens national security.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

I have to admit that when I first saw this title I had a completely different idea in my head about where this story was headed. Something more to do with Washington or Jefferson. I am so glad I was wrong. This story was amazing!!

Delving into Ollie’s past was a real treat for the mind and soul. Let’s face it fathers and daughters have a bond. Our fathers are our first super heroes. So when Ollie finds out there was part of his life that she knew nothing about – a monumental part of his life – it makes sense she would move heaven and earth to get to the truth. And she almost does.

We are also treated to a closer peek into President Hyden’s relationship with his son Josh. Josh dreams are being chef. The President has other dreams for his son. Ollie smooths the ruffled feathers to make both happy knowing the young man will have plenty of time to explore all his future options. Josh is a awesome kid and ends up playing a very pivotal role in this story.

July Hyzy topped herself with this story. She had me totally immersed into Ollie’s life with some laugh out loud moments and times I was on the edge of my seat. An outstanding mystery! A must read!! You will want to give your own father a big hug. I have sent a virtual one to heaven myself.

Welcome To Cozy Wednesday!

It’s been about a year since Julie stopped by for a visit and then it was over at Dollycas’s Thoughts. I am thrilled to welcome here today. I love the way she writes! Whether it be Ollie at The White House or Grace at Marshfield Manor, I am always excited when a new book comes out. Those ladies always have a unique way of getting right in the middle of the mayhem.

It’s a little hot and sticky in the Midwest today so help yourself to a glass of ice cold lemonade and pull up a chair as we visit with Julie today.

Hi Julie!!

Hi Everyone! I am happy to be here.

My love affair with Marshall Field’s

By Julie Hyzy

From time I was very little, I’ve loved Marshall Field’s. The flagship State Street department store in Chicago loomed large in my life especially around Christmas when my mother would take me and my little brother there to visit Santa, marvel at the decorated (and animated) windows, and stroll through the toy store.  We didn’t eat under the enormous Christmas tree in the Walnut Room back then, mostly because such a luxury was out of my parents’ reach at that point. Honestly, my brother and I never thought twice about it. We got to see the sparkling tree through the windows in the floor above the restaurant, and really—what more did we need?

When I started college at Loyola University I got a part time job at a bank on State and Wacker after classes each day—just about a block away from Field’s. That job turned into summer employment and an eventual full time position after graduation. I spent almost every lunch hour at Marshall Field’s. I loved that store and grew to know it very, very well. From the cosmetics and fragrances on the first floor, through the furniture high on eight and nine, I had the place memorized. Back then I had an aunt who worked in the candy kitchen making delicious Frango Mints. She invited me to come up to the very top floors to visit—and to watch the chocolates being created—and it was my first time up in the off-limits areas of the massive store. It’s an experience I’ll never forget.

When my husband and I got engaged, we registered at Field’s. There was no other serious contender to my mind. When our daughters  were born—and then old enough—we took them to Field’s at Christmastime, thus bringing traditions full circle. And trips into the city weren’t complete without lunch in The English Room, a loving gaze up at the Tiffany ceiling, and a purchase of Frango Mints to enjoy on the ride home.

Things change. We all know that. And as much as I like Macy’s in New York, I sincerely wish it had remained there. It’s a great destination—a real jewel of the city. But it belongs in New York. Not in Chicago, and not in our former flagship store. Marshall Field’s was taken over by Macy’s in 2005 and the State Street store was renamed in 2006. Some good news: The brass nameplate on the State Street store’s building is considered an historic landmark. It can’t be removed. That’s something. And the iconic Marshall Field clocks on the building’s corners are still there. Also good. But the store, as we all knew and loved it, is gone.

Why am I telling you all this today—and what does it have to do with my newest Manor House Mystery, Grace Among Thieves?

Well, if you’ve read any of the books so far, you know that Grace’s boss is Bennett Marshfield—of Marshfield Manor. Yep, I named the estate in honor of my beloved store, in gratitude for all the wonderful memories it’s provided to me and my family over the years.

When you read Grace Under Pressure, Grace Interrupted,or the new Grace Among Thieves, you can feel how much Marshfield means to Grace. I drew on my own deep love for Marshall Field’s to write that part of the story. Although the mansion doesn’t resemble the store in the least, the feel is the same. There’s so much to explore, so much to experience. History and mystery. In abundance.

I know that the store is gone, but the happiness it brought me lives on. And, in my own small way, I’m hoping to keep the memory alive, not just for myself but for everyone who still misses our beloved Marshall Field’s.

I hope you’ll come visit my Marshfield Manor. Come for the tour… stay for the murder!

Grace has her hands full. There is film crew making a souvenir movie of Marshfield Manor and the owner’s stepdaughter has dropped by for an unexpected visit. The last thing she needs is the news she received from former professor. Apparently historic places like Marshfield Manor are being targeted by thieves. She is confident in their security team until a guest is murdered and another one shot. There is just not enough manpower to spread around.

Grace has reason to believe the killer and thieves are lurking about. The two things may even be connected. She will do anything for Marsheild Manor and its owner even if it means putting herself in danger.  Grace my just find herself armed and dangerous.

Dollycas’s Thoughts
I couldn’t wait to read this story. I have become invested in the people at Marshfield Manor. Grace, Frances, Bennett and even Hillary. They is never a dull moment when she is around.

Grace again gets involved in all the drama with all the best intentions. Frances tries to keep everyone in line and Bennett watches over everyone.

The author reeled me in with this one and had me hook, line and sinker. I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough. So much excitement and suspense I forgot it was a cozy!

Julie Hyzy writes wonderful stories and each one is better than the last. If you were waiting for this one like me you will really enjoy it. If this is a new author for you start at the beginning, read them in order, and enjoy. I can’t wait to she what kind of trouble Grace gets into next!!
