Time has not been kind to sleepy Dorset Falls, Connecticut, where an erstwhile resident is hoping to bring a tattered yarn shop back to life—but with a murderer on the loose, the whole town is in knots…

Josie Blair left Dorset Falls twelve years ago in hopes of making it big in New York City. But after earning an overpriced master’s degree and getting fired by a temperamental designer, she finds herself heading back to her hometown. Her great-uncle was injured in a car accident, and newly unemployed Josie is the only person available to take care of him. Uncle Eb’s wife didn’t survive the crash, so Josie is also tasked with selling the contents of her Aunt Cora’s yarn shop. But the needling ladies of the Charity Knitters Association pose a far bigger challenge than a shop full of scattered skeins…

Miss Marple Knits is one of the few businesses still open in the dreary downtown. Josie can’t imagine how it stayed open for so long, yet something about the cozy, resilient little shop appeals to her. But when one of the town’s most persnickety knitters turns up dead in a pile of cashmere yarn, Josie realizes there’s something truly twisted lurking beneath the town’s decaying façade…

INCLUDES ORIGINAL KNITTING PATTERNS!

Dollycas’s Thoughts

It’s been a long time since Josie Blair has set foot in Dorset Falls but she really wants out of New York City and away from her cantankerous boss. When her mother sends her to help her great uncle Eb she balks a bit but makes the trip. Eb and his wife Cora were in a auto accident and Cora didn’t survive.  Eb is a handful but Josie knows how to deal with him. Josie never met Cora but gets to know her through her friends when she closes up her yarn shop, Miss Marple Knits. She knew she was going to have to inventory everything at the store but never expected a dead body to be added to her list.  She does have some friends in town but she definitely has not been welcomed by the community. Something isn’t right in Dorset Falls and while she really doesn’t want to try to find a killer she just needs find out what is truly going on in a town she used to call home.

The author has set her story in a strange little town. Most of the storefronts are empty. Everyone seems to have a secret or something shady going on.  It truly is an “Tangled Web” of a place.

Josie Blair is quite a leading lady. She arrives in town with a very clear agenda but each day that agenda unravels just a little more.  I liked her Uncle Eb too. He is a man set in his ways and it is hard for him to take help from anyone. He and his neighbor Roy have a bit of feud going on and play nasty tricks on each other. Roy’s grandson, Mitch, tries to keep the peace between them or at least clean up their messes. Mitch and Josie make a great team and I love where that relationship is heading.

The author does a slow build with the mystery part of the story which is very smart. We meet the characters, become engaged and form our opinions and then we follow the clues to the murderer and the other craziness in Dorset Falls.

Josie Blair may not know how to knit one stitch but Sadie Hartwell knows how to knit and purl and yarn over to create a charming story. With the twists, turns, and the control of a master she has written a story that is very hard to put down. It has a very comfortable flow and evolves at a perfect pace. There were a couple laugh out loud moments too.

What a great start for this series! I hope we don’t have to wait too long for another visit to Dorset Falls.

Cozy Wednesday with Maddie Day – Author of Flipped for Murder – #Giveaway too!

cozy wednesday 2013 640
Welcome to Cozy Wednesday!
I am so happy to have Maddie Day 🙂 stop by!

Maxwell

What Makes Flipped for Murder a Cozy?

Thanks for having me over for Cozy Wednesday, Lori! I’m delighted to launch a new Country Store cozy mystery series with Flipped for Murder.  (Yes, I am also Maddie Day.)

So what puts this book, and this series, into the cozy subgenre? So often cozies are defined by what they aren’t: not noir, not dark. Not explicitly violent or sexual. Not laden with obscenities. Cozies, as well as most other “traditional” mysteries, have a village or enclosed setting plus an amateur sleuth with a personal stake in solving the crime. She isn’t paid to do the work of unraveling a mystery, unlike a police officer, FBI agent, or private detective.

flipped for murderCozies are often associated with crafts usually done by women – knitting, quilting, weaving. Most have a lighter tone than other traditional amateur-sleuth mysteries. Lots have recipes at the end, or sprinkled throughout. Many have a hint of romance. Light or not, recipes or not, I agree with Barbara Ross that the most important aspect of cozy mysteries is that justice is done at the end. The world of the village is put to rights again – except for the victim and the villain, of course.

So let’s see where my series fits in. Not noir and no overt violence or sex? Check. A budding romance? Yes. Non-offensive language: of course. Definitely village-based: fictional South Lick has a downtown with Robbie’s country store restaurant, a library, a hardware store, the bank, and some shops, but not much else. And an amateur sleuth – do you know any other chef-carpenters who find murderers? In  Flipped for Murder, Robbie Jordan’s own cheesy biscuit was found stuffed in the mouth of the murder victim, with whom Robbie had had public disagreements. So Robbie has a strong motive to solve the case before she herself lands in jail. Oh, and there are recipes…but no crafts other than cooking. Robbie being a puzzle master doesn’t quite count as a craft.

At the end, justice is definitely served, and all is right in the village – until the next murder, at least. But there are different flavors of cozy mysteries. Several reviews of Flipped for Murder confirm that this isn’t a too-cute-by-half cozy. Several have mentioned that I paint a portrait of real people, not overly eccentric or quirky characters. For this I am grateful – because that was what I was aiming for.

Readers: What do you look for in a cozy? What makes you put one down before you’ve finished reading it? And do you use the recipes in foodie cozies like mine or ignore them?

~Maddie

Blurb: Flipped for Murder, the first book in the Country Store Mysteries series, was released October 27. The series features Robbie Jordan and Pans ‘N Pancakes, her country store restaurant in fictional South Lick, Indiana. When she remodels the store full of antique cookware and turns it into a local breakfast and lunch establishment, she doesn’t plan to have murder on the menu. But small-town secrets and bitter rivalries put sand in the batter and before Robbie knows it, her new life is a lot more complicated than she had expected.

Everyone in town shows up for the grand re-opening of the store, but when the mayor’s disagreeable assistant is found dead, Robbie realizes that not all press is good press. With all eyes on her, she’ll have to summon her puzzle-solving skills to clear her name, unscramble the town’s darkest secrets, and track down a cold-blooded killer–before she’s the next to die…

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Maddie Day has given this series a fine start.

Robbie Jordan is a woman of many talents, business owner, cook, carpenter, and now amateur sleuth. She opens her country store/restaurant with a fabulous turnout only the whole thing put into jeopardy when someone kills the witchy assistant to the mayor and sets up Robbie to take the fall. She doesn’t “flip” out but she does her best to flatten the killer and ride her bike off into the sunset. Not quite how it happens though 🙂

I liked Robbie at lot. She is fair and hardworking and smart. She really is determined to make her business a success. One thing she is going to have to do is hire more help especially if sleuthing is added to the menu.

The other characters we meet in South Lick are very engaging as well. Next to Robbie I would say her employee, Danna would be my favorite character. I think we have just scratched the surface on all of the characters but Danna is the one I am excited to see more of. She gets her nerve up to put someone in their place in this story and I wanted to jump right into the pages to give her a “high five”. The mayor is a bit over the top but I think Robbie will learn how to handle her.

Day gives us a compelling mystery and an intriguing subplot too. The victim wasn’t like by many so there were plenty of suspects. Robbie did find herself in some hair-raising situations that were pretty intense and made the paging fly. There was just a touch of romance that I anxious to see what develops.

There are recipes in the back of the book and a sneak peak of the next book in the series Grilled For Murder out May 31, 2016. Can’t wait to return to South Lick, Indiana!

As the leggy ladies soak in the magic of the city of lights, everything is magnifique…until a very important patron goes belly-up on the top deck.

On the heels of their French debut, murder takes center stage. The five daring dancers will need to step lively to stop the crafty killer fast…or their grand finale will turn out far more explosive than the fireworks over the Eiffel Tower…

Includes Fashion Tips And Tasty Recipes

Dollycas’s Thoughts

I want to be a Happy Hoofer! They travel to awesome places and dance. Sometimes they tap their way right into a bunch of trouble but they always seem to shuffle their way out!

If you haven’t met the Happy Hoofers they are a group of friends that love to dance.

  • Tina is leader of the group. She keeps everything organized. She is the Travel Editor at Perfect Bride magazine.
  • Janice is an actress and director in community theater. She is divorced with a daughter in college.
  • Pat is a family therapist and the mother hen of the group.
  • Mary Louise and Tina have been friends for over 30 years. She has 3 children and a very trying husband named George.
  • Gini is a redhead with a temper to match. She is a documentary filmmaker and while making a film in India fell in love with a little girl she hopes to adopt.

Janice narrates the story this time. The girls are in Paris and are booked to perform for a week on the Bateau Mouche, a touristy sightseeing boat that travels down the Seine.  At the end of their first night passengers are guided to the top deck of the ship to see the Bastille Day fireworks but what they find is a dead body. This is not the first murder the Hoofers have found. They have become pretty well versed in police investigations and they can’t stop themselves from doing a bit of investigating on their own. They are going to have to kick up more than their heels to catch this killer.

This is the second book I have read recently that takes place in Paris. Mary McHugh does an excellent job or describing the “City of Light”. The dancers are staying in a rented apartment and their schedule leaves them plenty of time to see the famous landmarks and partake in some of the culinary delights from places around the city.  They even take a trip to Versailles castle and gardens.  I would really love to actually visit Paris someday. For now I have to settle for these virtual trips.

The mystery is fun too. Following the clues right along with the ladies. I figured it out a bit before them and I wish I could have let them know because one of them gets themselves into quite a pickle. The story wraps up almost too quickly for me though. I liked the way it played out but a few more pages of danger would have really added to the suspense level.

A very entertaining read with some tempting recipes and some amusing travel tips are included throughout the book.

The busy summer tourist season is winding down in Busman’s Harbor, Maine, but Julia Snowden senses trouble simmering for the Snowden Family Clambake Company. Shifty David Thwing–the “Mussel King” of upscale seafood restaurants–is sniffing around town for a new location. But serving iffy clams turns out to be the least of his troubles. . .

When Thwing is found sleeping with the fishes beneath a local lobsterman’s boat, the police quickly finger Julia’s brother-in-law Sonny as the one who cooked up the crime. Sure, everyone knows Sonny despised the Mussel King. . .but Julia believes he’s innocent. Proving it won’t be easy, though. It seems there’s a lot more than murder on the menu, and Julia needs to act fast. . .

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Another tasty installment from Barbara Ross. In Clammed Up Julia came home to help save the family business. In Boiled Over she got the business steered in the right direction. Now in Musseled Out the season is drawing to a close and she needs to make a huge decision, return to her job back in New York or stay in Maine with her friends and family. Of course a dead body being found and her brother-in-law being a prime suspect will weigh heavily into her decision. First she needs to find out who killed the “Mussel King” and why, then she should hopefully, probably, maybe, make a decision regarding her own future.

I quickly became caught up in this mystery because after reading the first 2 books I was very invested in these characters. Growing up in a family food business I understand how the whole family gets involved to making it a success so I really want the Snowden Family Clambake Company to succeed. A new competing business wouldn’t be a good  thing but I can’t see Sonny killing someone over it so I knew there was much more to the story, but Ross truly surprised me with the way she mixed all the elements together.

Barbara Ross slowly develops these characters. We learn more and more about them with every turn of the page. Livie, Julia’s sister, and Sonny have a new baby on the way. Add that to the business worries and things get a little stressful. Julia’s mom is unsure of her place since her husband passed away and she is branching out causing some concern from her daughters. Chris and Julia’s relationship is still so new and they are working things through as they get a little more serious.

The author has given us a wonderful whodunit with just the right amounts of humor and romance. I loved the ending. I hope this isn’t the last we see of these characters. I have really enjoyed my Maine excursions.
