Cozy Wednesday featuring Three Shots to the Wind (A Chloe Jackson Sea Glass Saloon Mystery) by Sherry Harris #Review / #Giveaway @KensingtonBooks @SHarrisAuthor

Welcome to Cozy Wednesday!

I am thrilled to share my thoughts with you today about
Three Shots to the Wind by Sherry Harris!

Three Shots to the Wind (A Chloe Jackson Sea Glass Saloon Mystery)
Cozy Mystery
3rd in Series
Setting – Florida
Kensington (March 29, 2022)
Mass Market Paperback ‏ : ‎ 304 pages
ISBN-10 ‏ : ‎ 149673436X
ISBN-13 ‏ : ‎ 978-1496734365
Kindle ASIN ‏ : ‎ B098KLTMZX

Chloe’s Windy City ex-fiancé gets blown away in the Florida panhandle . . .

DEAD EXES TELL NO TALES

Saloon owner Chloe Jackson appears to have a secret admirer. She’s pouring drinks at the Sea Glass Saloon in Emerald Cove when an airplane flies by above the beach with a banner reading I LOVE YOU CHLOE JACKSON. She immediately rules out Rip Barnett. They are in the early stages of dating and no one has said the L-word. Then a bouquet of lilacs—her favorite flower—is delivered to the bar, followed by an expensive bottle of her favorite sparkling wine. It couldn’t be . . .

Sure enough, her ex-fiancé from Chicago has flown down to Florida for an accountants’ convention. But is he trying to mix business with pleasure and win her back? Unfortunately, he’s not in a hotel conference room, he’s floating facedown in the lake next to her house, clutching a photo of Chloe. Who murders an accountant on a business trip—it just doesn’t add up. When Rip becomes the prime suspect, Chloe is determined to find the secret murderer. But if she isn’t careful, it may be closing time and lights out for her.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Chloe Jackson is one lucky girl, somebody loves her and they are pulling out all the stops to tell her so. An airplane flying a banner I LOVE YOU CHLOE JACKSON, her favorite flowers, wine, an invitation to a fancy dinner. When Rip Barnett calls asking “Is there something you want to tell me?” she knows he may be her admirer but he is not the secret admirer sending the gifts. Who would know all her favorite things?

It couldn’t be, could it? It is! Her ex-fiancé has traveled from Chicago into her new neck of the woods for an accountants’ convention. Does he think he can win her back with a few nice gifts? Before she can find out she finds his dead body in the lake right next to her new home! Grasping a picture of her in his hands! Rocked to her core she faints dead away. When she wakes up she tells Deputy Biffle who the man is setting off a quick interrogation leading to Rip becoming Biffle’s prime suspect. Chloe knows she has no choice. She has to track down a killer but the killer may also be tracking her.

I love the characters in this series. Things started out a little prickly between Vivi and Chloe but they are slowly finding their way to owning the Sea Glass Saloon together and even becoming friends. So much so that Vivi has taken quite an interest in Chloe’s private life. Even a dead body doesn’t deter her much. Joaquin and his partner Michael have become true friends to her as well. Even Deputy Biffle is learning to tolerate all her questions even though he may not answer them. I love the relationship between Rip and Chloe, taking things slow and maybe even slower because Chloe’s brothers show up to “protect” her. All these core characters continue to develop at a realistic pace. Vivi and Chloe are still each mourning Boone in their own ways.  Grieving takes time and it is different for every individual. I am so happy the author continues to include that in each story.

It was a real treat to have Kenny and Randy make a surprise visit being urged by their wives and parents. Their deep-dish pizza dinner meeting with Rip was funny and heartwarming. They really love their little sister.

Ms. Harris created a very complex character in her victim. While Perry Franklin was killed off very early in this story his character immerged over the course of the book and he had a whole different side that Chloe never saw. Everyone told her changed after they broke up but she really dodged a bullet when she broke up with him.

The mystery of Perry’s death was a complicated one with several suspects. The accountant’s conference brought several people in from the Windy City. Set in Florida it is only proper that the story is full of a ton of red herrings. Each suspect on Chloe’s list could have motive to have shot Perry dead. How many secrets can one man have? The book has a very brisk pace but I did my best to slow it down to try to catch every clue. Even doing that I was kept guessing right up until the exciting reveal.

Anytime I open a book by Sherry Harris I know I will be delightfully entertained and that my armchair sleuthing skills will be tested. Three Shots in the Wind did just that. What a fun read!

I am very excited for this series to continue. Randy and Kenny have promised to return with their families. That sounds will be like a fantastic good time especially when you mix it with Chloe’s next mystery to solve.

Controversy erupts in Miracle Springs, North Carolina when the owner of the local bookstore tries to play peacekeeper—but winds up playing detective instead . . .

Known for her window displays, Nora Pennington decides to showcase fictional heroines like Roald Dahl’s Matilda and Madeline Miller’s Circe for Halloween. But a family-values group disapproves of the magical themes and wastes no time launching a modern-day witch hunt. Suddenly, former friends and customers are targeting not only Nora and Miracle Books, but a new shopkeeper, Celeste, who’s been selling CBD oil products.

Nora and her friends in the Secret, Book, and Scone Society are doing their best to put an end to the strife—but then someone puts an end to a life. Declared an accident, the ruling can’t explain the old book page covered with strange symbols and disturbing drawings left under Nora’s doormat. It’s up to Nora and the Secret, Book, and Scone Society to sort out the clues before more bodies turn up and the secrets from Celeste’s past come back to haunt them all . . .

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Secret, Book, and Scone Society Members

Nora, the owner of Miracle Books, tries to heal people’s woes with a unique set of books she personally selects for them.

Hester runs the Gingerbread House bakery. Customers tell her a little bit about their lives and what brought them to Miracle Springs. Then she bakes them up a “comfort scone”.

June works at the hot springs spa where people come to rejuvenate themselves.

Estella is a beautician who tries to help her clients find their true selves.

The latest amazing window display at Miracle Books highlights a group of fictional heroines and their stories that are perfect for Halloween. While many find the display fantastic a small group of women taunting family values have found the display offensive and plan to protest and boycott the store and make sure others do the same. It is not just Nora’s shop feeling the group’s ire. They are also targeting Red Bird Gallery and Gifts, and Soothe, a new shop that has just opened selling CBD oil products. Nora is livid and calls for a Secret, Book, and Scone Society meeting to find ways to thwart the “Women of Lasting Values Society”‘s efforts.

Meanwhile, Celeste Leopold and her daughter Bren are busy getting everything in Soothe the way they want it, hoping to draw in plenty of customers that can be helped by their products. Bren does not seem to be happy with their move to Miracle Springs though.

Later at the Farm to Table Festival Nora and her friends notice Bren sitting with a man they don’t recognize. After an altercation, the man takes off. Nora tries to talk to Bren and lets her know that she was there if Bren ever needs to talk. But before Bren can take her up on the offer Nora finds the young woman dead near her home and a very old page from a book filled with strange symbols and drawings under her doormat. The death is ruled accidental but Nora knows there is much more to the story. The Secret, Book, and Scone Society has a new case and they believe their key to finding the killer is in Bren and her mother’s past.

Ellery Adams is a treasure and so are her characters. The women of the Secret, Book, and Scone Society are so cleverly crafted. They all have their strengths and huge hearts supporting each other through thick and thin but also reaching out to help others in need.

In Ink and Shadows, they take Celeste under their wings as she deals with the death of her daughter. Helping out in her shop, bringing her dinner, and staying to share time with her. They also use their sleuthing techniques to try to find out who killed Bren and why. While these women have special “gifts”, they are so real, genuine, compassionate, and empathic even when they are facing their own drama. I quickly became invested in their lives while reading the first book in this series and with each subsequent book they draw me in even more.

I just have to say also that Sheldon is an excellent addition to this series. He is a perfect fit among this strong group of women. He is dealing with his own trials every day but fights to live his life to the fullest.

The mysteries included in this fourth book of the series were so interesting and intriguing. I really found myself caught up by the book page with the symbols and the mysterious book it came from along with Celeste and Bren’s life before coming to Miracle Springs. The book was very well-plotted with several surprises. I enjoyed the way so many members of the community were involved in the story. I was cheering when Nora got help with the family values group from some unexpected people and the way their ideas changed the landscape of many people’s thoughts.

Ms. Adams continues to feature some hot-button topics in her stories. I loved a scene where bullying was discussed. Nora continues to deal with the aftermath of her fire and that took a big step within these pages too, I hate to mention other topics because I don’t want to give too much of the story away.

The author drops a lot of diverse book titles throughout these books and she thoughtfully includes a full list at the end of the book. I always find myself highlighting several while I am reading to investigate later. The quotes at the beginning of each chapter are often very thought-provoking as well.

There was also one passage voiced by June that I would love to make into a poster:

“To me getting lucky is reading something so magical that I’m put under the book’s spell. That book owns me. I can’t think of anything else until I finish it. And I can’t think about anything else for days afterward. And the next book I read is doomed. It can’t take the place of the magic book. But I keep reading. I keep reading because I know that feeling will come along again.”

I totally agree with June.

Because of the theme of the series and the subjects presented I know a lot of research goes into each book so the length of time between each book release is very understandable. This book originally came out while I was dealing with my cancer treatments and I didn’t get to read it until now. The good thing about that is I only have to wait about a month before The Vanishing Type is released and I am so happy about that. Stay tuned I will be sharing my thoughts about that one soon.

Note – book does include some explicit language.

Cozy Wednesday featuring Death by the Finish Line (An Abby McCree Mystery) by Alexis Morgan #Review / #Giveaway @Alexis_Morgan @KensingtonBooks

Welcome to Cozy Wednesday!

I am pleased to feature Death by the Finish Line by Alexis Morgan today!

Death by the Finish Line (An Abby McCree Mystery)
Cozy Mystery
5th in Series
Setting – Washington State
Kensington Cozies (December 28, 2021)
Paperback ‏ : ‎ 336 pages
ISBN-10 ‏ : ‎ 1496731271
ISBN-13 ‏ : ‎ 978-1496731272
Kindle ASIN ‏ : ‎ B091M8HQ62

When a dead body turns up on a race route, Abby McCree hits the ground running to catch a killer . . .

Overcommitted Abby has once again been drafted to use her organizing superpowers—this time for a 5k charity run that’s part of the Founder’s Day Celebration in Snowberry Creek, Washington. At least she has help, albeit from an unlikely source: Gil Pratt, a member of her handsome tenant Tripp Blackston’s veterans group and co-owner of a motorcycle repair shop with his brother. Abby and Gil may seem like an odd couple, but they work great together.

The event seems to be running smoothly—until city council member James DiSalvo is found murdered in a ravine along the race route. Unfortunately, Gil’s brother Gary had a very public argument with DiSalvo minutes before the race, making him the prime suspect. Now the two race organizers must again team up to prove Gary’s innocence—before the real killer makes a run for it. But one wrong step and Abby may be the next one to come in dead last . . .

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Abby McCree’s special organizational skills have been called on again for an event in Snowberry Creek. The Founder’s Day Celebration will include a Salmon Scoot 5k charity run and Abby is happy to plan it as long as she gets help. She is surprised when Gil Pratt, co-owner of the local motorcycle repair shop volunteers. He is also a vet and a member of her hunky tenant Tripp Blackston’s veteran’s group. After a quick chat, they agree to work together and make a fine team.

The big day arrives and everything is in place for the run to be a huge success. They have plenty of volunteers along the route including a medical team in case of any injuries. The runners are soon off and running and crossing the finish line with Tripp as one of those coming in with the first group. Soon is it time to account for a few stragglers so Abby starts to make her way along the route. She comes across a couple of teenagers that tell her a man has fallen down a ravine just off the race path. By the time help arrives they find city councilman James DiSalvo dead and his death was no accident.

Shortly before the race, Gil’s brother Gary was seen having a very heated argument with the councilman so he immediately becomes the police’s main suspect.  Gil believes in his brother’s innocence so asks Abby to help him prove it. It’s a race to find the killer before they can run off and kill again.

I really enjoy the characters in this series. Abby is a wonderful protagonist who has settled nicely into the home she inherited from her aunt. She has made friends of all ages and is a trusted member of the community. She is developing a very comfortable relationship with her tenant Tripp Blackston. The handsome gentleman also has several admirers including one that loves delivering her “famous tuna casseroles” so the poor man will never go hungry. They both are in love with Abby’s mastiff Zeke, a big gentle giant that immediately stole my heart.

Ms. Morgan introduces us to a great new character in Gil Pratt. Abby wasn’t sure about him when they first met. In fact, he scared her a bit, but over the course of this story, they became good friends. His brother was a key suspect in this book but we didn’t really get to know too much about him. I hope both these characters appear in future books in this series. I do have a fear of an Abby, Tripp, Gil, romantic triangle and I am not sure how I feel about that when Abby and Tripp’s relationship is just starting to take off.

We also meet James DiSalvo and learn a lot about him after his death. He was an awful man and had plenty of enemies. Enemies equal suspects and he had a nice wide pool. The mystery really has that small-town twist. The police chief is friends with Gil and Gary and he really tried to give Gary the benefit of the doubt and didn’t just stop investigating when all the evidence was pointing right at him. The author really twisted the case up with plenty of red herrings to keep her readers guessing. I could say my guess was half right but it was not firmed up by any good theory until all the clues were spelled out for me. I had a lot of fun following along with Abby as she dished out baked goods and played a little pool while trying to root out a killer.

While this author can write one heck of a mystery it is the wonderful characters that bring me back for book after book in this series. They are believable and genuine. I love the veteran tie-in and all the good works Abby gets involved in. I would love to jump into the pages just so I could be her friend.

Death by the Finish Line is a winning addition to this series. I can’t wait to return to Snowberry Creek!

Ivy Culpepper keeps the ovens hot at Yeast of Eden, a Northern California bakery that specializes in traditional breads. But now she has to deal with a stone-cold killer . . .

Just as Ivy’s brother Billy is about to get engaged to his beloved, a tragedy interrupts the happy moment. The body of longtime Santa Sofia resident Marisol Ruiz washes up on the beach—and it’s even more heartbreaking since Marisol’s father also recently died. But Marisol was a strong competitive swimmer. It seems unlikely there’s even a grain of truth to the theory that she accidentally drowned.

As Ivy gets to work helping her mentor, Olaya Solis, with the catering for Marisol’s funeral, she also teams up with her partners in detection—because if they want to prevent someone from getting away with murder, there’s no time for loafing . . .

Dollycas’s Thoughts

There’s a killer loose in Santa Sofia and sadly the victim was a beloved member of the community. Marisol Ruiz was a waitress at Miguel’s restaurant so the death strikes close for many members of the community including Ivy. Sadly Marisol has just recently lost her father and was having a hard time dealing with his death and at first, some people thought she took her own life but the evidence quickly proved otherwise.

Also happening around town, Sheriff Emmaline Davis is planning to propose to Ivy’s brother but now she has this murder to solve first. Ivy and Miquel are going to do everything they can do to help her do that. They hope that catering Marisol’s funeral will shed some light on who killed her and why.

This series is filled with a great cast of diverse characters that are allowed to shine within these pages. They are all well-crafted with plenty of room left for growth. It was hard to pick a favorite this time because they were all excellent. Miguel and his family always give me the good feels. Ivy is a fantastic protagonist and seems like so much fun to be around.

The mystery this time takes a real unexpected turn that twists the whole story up. After that turn, my stomach got this sick feeling as I knew where everything was headed. I was completely satisfied with the way the story played out.  I may have been cheering just a little bit.

I know when I pick up a book by this author I am going to be entertained from beginning to end. Flour in the Attic was no exception.

I have gotten behind on this series but the last line of the book was a real zinger. A cliffhanger that draws readers right into the next book in the series. I intend to jump right into Dough or Die soon and the rest of the series too.
