After talking her way into a job writing for Portland’s Northwest Extreme magazine, Meg Reed may now really be in over her head. Actually, about 8,000 feet over her head. . .

She’s at Mount Hood’s remote Silcox Hut, covering the the seriously hardcore Ridge Rangers– Oregon’s elite high-altitude rescue team–during their four-day winter training. Sure, Meg beefed up her outdoor skills over the summer . . . but she’s still hoping to cover the event with some hot chocolate by the cheery fireplace. Then, during a sudden blizzard, she swears she hears gunshots. No one stranded in the hut believes her . . . until self-absorbed Ridge Ranger Ben Rogers is found outside in a pool of frozen blood. Meg’s now got to find this killer quickly . . . before cabin fever does them all in!

Dollycas’s Thoughts

I have been waiting for this book, thankfully we weren’t kept waiting a whole year!

Meg is back and off on another adventure and again she is not prepared and I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT!! She thinks a little “training” she did over the summer will be able to make her look like she knows what she is doing and fool her boss. Well she is prepared for roughing in front of the fireplace but she can’t ski and her cute little gloves are not going to keep her warm as she observes the Ridge Rangers. She does know what gunshots sound like and she knows they mean trouble especially when the head Ridge Ranger is found dead!

This girl she can get herself in the middle of things even when she is trying hard to avoid them. Her father was a journalist too and was killed. She hears his voice in her head throughout the entire story and there are several unanswered questions about his death. This was touched on in the first book and that subplot continues in this one.

Again in addition to the great cast of characters the setting is a character too. The author describes everything so wonderfully, from the blizzard and piles of snow to the frigid temps. Burrrrrrr!!! Traveling up an down the mountain from the main lodge to the remote Silcox Hut, I could picture it so vividly.

This was a fantastic story with a huge OMG moment! The main mystery was so good. I was suspecting everyone at one point or another. I had just one little issue with sometime Meg had a hard time with near the end of  the story but I don’t want to spoil anything but those of you that know me will know exactly what I am talking about when you read the story.

I am already waiting the next edition, these cliffhangers are killer, lol!!!

The dynamite dancers will have to step up their game before a clever killer brings the curtain down on one of them . . . for good!

Includes Photo Tips And Tasty Recipes

If you haven’t met the Happy Hoofers check out my review of the first book, Chorus Lines, Caviar, and Corpses here.
Amazon has the Kindle Version on sale for $1.99 right now.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Gini narrates this time and she a force to be reckoned with. She has a hard time holding her tongue and that lands her on the suspect list.

I like these stories because these woman are my age and I wish I could be traveling right along with them. I am mystery fan so even the dead bodies wouldn’t both me too much….yeah right…well I would hope I could help them sleuth out the killer.

Set on a train traveling through Green Spain sounds just spectacular except when a murder means the passengers are stuck on the train instead of seeing the sights. The Happy Hoofers have made friends with certain people though that allows them to travel to some local tourist attractions and restaurants, but they are usually quick secret excursions.

This is basically a closed mystery meaning the killer has to be someone on the train even though it makes several stops. Even in the close quarters these ladies find a way to snoop and eavesdropping is pretty easy with everyone so close together. There are more than a few twists before the true culprit is revealed and I was thrilled that I was on the right track.

I did enjoy the disabled passenger on the train. Their experience mirrored mine about life in a wheelchair and they offered some great insight.

Mary McHugh has penned a very humorous mystery with a key emphasis on friendship. There is a bit of romance too. Love always seems to bloom when people travel. The recipes are great too!

This can be read as a stand alone but recommend starting at the beginning with Chorus Lines, Caviar, and Corpses. They are quick entertaining reads and a great way to spend an afternoon.

We don’t have long to wait for our next vacation with the Happy Hoofers. We head to France with Cancans, Croissants, and Caskets August 25.

Review/Giveaway – Murder with Fried Chicken and Waffles by A.L. Herbert

Welcome to Mahalia’s Sweet Tea–the finest soul food restaurant in Prince George’s County, Maryland. In between preparing her famous cornbread and mashed potatoes so creamy “they’ll make you want to slap your Momma,” owner Halia Watkins is about to dip her spoon into a grisly mystery. . .

Halia Watkins has her hands full cooking, hosting, and keeping her boisterous young cousin, Wavonne, from getting too sassy with customers. Having fast-talking entrepreneur Marcus Rand turn up in her kitchen is annoying enough when he’s alive–but finding his dead body face-down on her ceramic tile after hours is much worse.

Marcus had his enemies, and the cast iron frying pan beside his corpse suggests that at last, his shady business deals went too far. Halia is desperate to keep Sweet Tea’s name out of the sordid spotlight but her efforts only make Wavonne a prime suspect. Now Halia will have to serve up the real villain–before the killer returns for a second helping. . .

Features delicious recipes from Mahalia’s Sweet Tea, including Sour Cream Corn Bread and Sweet Corn Casserole!

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Haila and Wavonne are absolutely laugh out loud funny. Wavonne reminded me of Lula from Janet Evanovich’s Stephanie Plum series but she is even funnier.

These two are in a fine mess when they find Marcus Rand, Haila’s silent partner, dead in Mahalia’s Sweet Tea. He is even more silent now. It looks like he has been hit upside the head with a cast iron frying pan. Haila panics when she thinks finding a dead body in her kitchen will mean the end of the Sweet Tea, so she decides to move the body. Wavonne is talked into helping her but she does something that soon will have her listed as the police’s prime suspect. Haila decides to find the real killer before her cousin ends up in the slammer and hilarity and drama ensues.

I was grabbed by the title of  this book and was completely drawn in to the story. The characters are full of humor, the mystery is great and the recipes and food sound delicious! Mahalia’s Sweet Tea sounds like a perfect place to visit for some fine fresh home-made food the will warm your soul. Haila has great business sense that she puts to good use and she tries figure out who relieved the world of Marcus’ misery. Turns out there are plenty of suspects. Wavonne is a gem who doesn’t have a lot of ambition but heart is in the right place.

I can’t find out anything about this author but they are off to a fantastic start with this series. Set in a place near plenty of action I can’t wait to see what kind of mess Haila and Wavonne get into next.

The tourist town of South Cove, California, is a lovely place to spend the holidays. But this year, shop owner Jill Gardner discovers there’s no place like home for homicide…

As owner of Coffee, Books, and More, Jill Gardner looks forward to the hustle and bustle of holiday shoppers. But when the mayor ropes her into being liaison for a new work program, ‘tis the season to be wary. Local businesses are afraid the interns will be delinquents, punks, or worse. For Jill, nothing’s worse than Ted Hendricks—the jerk who runs the program. After a few run-ins, Jill’s ready to kill the guy. That, however, turns out to be unnecessary when she finds Ted in his car—dead as a doornail. Detective Greg King assumes it’s a suicide. Jill thinks it’s murder. And if the holidays weren’t stressful enough, a spoiled blonde wants to sue the city for breaking her heel. Jill has to act fast to solve this mess—before the other shoe drops…

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Spending the holidays in South Cove sounds wonderful if you can look beyond finding a dead body or two. Book three in this series introduces us to Ted Hendricks and a program that matches businesses up with people looking for work. They work as interns as they gain experience to land them a full time job in the future. We quickly learn that Ted is a real creep and had someone not put the people of South Cove out of his misery he would have been headed to jail. It looks like suicide but Jill knows is was murder and is out to prove it.

Cahoon has brought back the characters we loved in the first two books, Jill, Aunt Jackie, town detective/Jill’s boyfriend, Greg King, Officer Toby/barista, and more. We meet Marie, the owner of the stained glass shop across the street from Coffee, Books, and More. No one knows much about her past but she and her store are a welcome addition to South Cove.  We also deal with Greg’s ex-wife, the mayor’s wife because she decides to take over planning the holiday festival, both women cause chaos. We also meet all the interns working through the holidays at several businesses.

She has immersed these characters in a story with a bit of romance, the aforementioned chaos, some humor, and plenty of stuff for Jill to poke her nose into so that trouble soon follows.

I loved that the intern working Coffee, Books, and More starts Aunt Jackie’s marketing juices flowing and that she comes up with a fabulous way to promote reading for a group of people that are unable to purchase books.

This was a very fast read for me, the title had me thinking I knew who the killer was and I was waiting for a connection to be revealed only the more I read the more I realized I was wrong.

A very entertaining read and I look forward to more Tourist Trap Mysteries coming soon!

Hayden Mundy Moore is an expert on everything chocolate, helping clients develop new products and revamp recipes until they’re irresistible. But sometimes, a dash of murder finds its way into the mix. . .

Hayden Mundy Moore has bushwhacked through African jungles and haggled in exotic markets to find the finest cacao beans and the most flavorful blends. It’s thrilling work but rarely dangerous–until a colleague turns up dead at the exclusive chocolate-themed Lemaître resort spa in San Francisco.

Adrienne Dowling’s heart attack is blamed on an accidental overdose of the secret ingredient used in Lemaître Chocolates’ new line. Hayden can’t believe that conscientious Adrienne would make that mistake. And between chocolate body scrubs, cocoa mud baths, and a non-stop frenzy of chocolate-based treats, Hayden starts to suspect that she, not Adrienne, was the intended target. Finding a killer among the rival chocolatiers and potential suspects won’t just be satisfying–it might save her life. . .

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Hayden’s job is to help rescue chocolate companies and their products when their formulas go awry. She is a chocolate expert that has traveled the world honing her knowledge. She seems to enjoy her job but is quite a procrastinator when it comes to paperwork and filing reports. Oh and she is independently wealthy with a financial adviser she has never met in person but he has a wonderful phone voice that curls her toes. She has known Danny forever and he always comes when she calls. He is a hunk with plenty of woman vying for his attention but his relationship with Hayden is strictly platonic.

I enjoyed this story and it has a great theme for a cozy mystery, but I did have some issues with the whole thing. First, Hayden is rich because of an inheritance she received and it has some unusual caveats and many things the reader is kept in the dark about. And Hayden is supposed to be a very intelligent woman but she does some really stupid things.

Next, I was just completely floored by the way the police just wrote off both the first and second deaths as complete accidents. They did relatively minor investigations that left too many unanswered questions.

Lastly, the mystery seems very more complex than it really is. Sadly I had it figured it out very early but kept reading just so that I knew I was right.

The good thing is that the author has all the right ingredients for this series to be a great success. Hayden and her back story needs to be more defined. She needs to be a much stronger protagonist. The other characters are interesting and as the series continues they need to evolve as well. Also the mystery itself needs be bigger, the clues more hidden to keep the reader guessing. The chocolate theme is fantastic as is Hayden traveling to each new assignment. I am very interested in seeing if the author can take the story to the next level in book #2. She has a good start now she needs to run with it.

It’s June in Lake Eden, Minnesota, and for Hannah Swensen, that means bridal showers galore, plus a massive fundraising event in need of confections – not to mention a killer who never learned that charity begins at home…Early summer brings plenty of work for Hannah, even before Mayor Bascomb’s wife drops by The Cookie Jar to place an order…for eleven-hundred cookies! Stephanie Bascomb is organizing an elaborate three-day event to support local charities, and though it’s a worthy cause, Hannah almost flips when her business partner, Lisa, suggests setting up an apple turnover stand. Hannah’s never made a turnover – but, pushover that she is, she places her faith in Lisa’s mother-in-law’s recipe and agrees to be a magician’s assistant in the fundraiser’s talent show…Dozens of pastries and one hideous purple dress later, Hannah has to admit that stepping out of her comfort zone has been fun as well as profitable. The only snag is the show’s host, community college professor Bradford Ramsey. Hannah and her younger sister Michelle each had unfortunate romantic relationships with Ramsey, and when the cad comes sniffing around between acts, Hannah tells him off. But when the curtain doesn’t go up, she discovers Ramsey backstage – dead as a doornail with a turnover in his hand…Now, to protect her reputation and Michelle’s, Hannah must get to the bottom of the professor’s bitter end. There are plenty of scorned suspects, including an ex-wife who feels cheated in more ways than one, and a prominent local who may have been using Ramsey to avenge her own randy spouse. But who was unstable enough to snuff out Professor Love? A killer who’s flakier than puff pastry – and far more dangerous…

This is one of my favorite series and I was thrilled to hear that Hallmark Movies & Mysteries is making a movie featuring the first book in the series starring Allison Sweeney (Days of Our Lives and The Biggest Loser) and Cameron Mathison (All My Children).

Hallmark Channel is looking to repeat the success of its Good Witch films with another original movie franchise, Chocolate Chip Cookie MurderAlison Sweeney has been tapped to star in the franchise for Hallmark Movies & Mysteries, with the first movie set cookiemurderto premiere this spring. Based on the New York Times bestselling series of books by Joanne Fluke, Chocolate Chip Cookie Murder centers on Hannah Swensen (Sweeney), shop owner of the Cookie Jar where much of the town’s gossip percolates along with the strong coffee. When a mysterious murder occurs, Hannah turns into a culinary detective and finds herself trying to solve the crime while getting caught in an unexpected romantic mystery of her own.

The casting comes on the heels of Sweeney’s starring role in one of Hallmark’s highest-rated original movies ever, Second Chances. She’s also set to star in and executive produce previously announced Radio Hype, which is currently in development for at the channel.

Hallmark Movie ChannelChocolate Chip Cookie Murder marks Sweeney’s first major acting gig following her October exit from Days Of Our Lives after almost 22 years as Sami Brady. Sweeney would continue her 13-season run as host of The Biggest Loser if the veteran NBC reality series is renewed.

Take one burned-out city girl. Add a crusty codger, a dash of romance, and a twist of humor. Stir in a generous helping of murder, and you’ve got the ingredients for one truly delicious mystery …

Haunted by the car accident that ended her career as a cookbook publicist, Val Deniston has traded in the chaos of New York City for a quieter life near the Chesapeake Bay. Living with her curmudgeonly grandfather in the tourist town of Bayport is hardly glamorous, but she enjoys running the Cool Down Café at the local fitness club, and she finally has time to work on her long-planned cookbook. After a club patron is murdered, Val cooks up a scheme to find the killer who framed her best friend. While Val investigates five suspects and uncovers five key clues, Granddad takes up cooking, creating havoc in the kitchen even when trying recipes that have only five ingredients.

Includes 8 five-ingredient recipes!

Dollycas’s Thoughts

The number 5 is the key here.

  • 5 ingredient recipes
  • 5 suspects
  • 5 key clues

Maya Corrigan is off to an excellent start with this mystery! Val Deniston is a great character with a tragic past. She is trying to get on with her life but is haunted with nightmares of the night when a car accident changed her life. She thought coming to Bayport would make things easier but a recent murder that has her best friend pegged at the prime suspect has her remembering that fateful night again and again as she tries to find the real killer.

I love the relationship Val has with her grandfather. She thinks he needs her there to take care of him and he does to a certain point but that man has more going on than she gives him credit for. He even turns the table on her and it was so much fun to read. Brought back a few memories of my own grandfather.

The other characters were great too. I think everyone in town has a secret and Val considered them all suspects at one time or another, even the one whose kisses gave her that warm and tingly feeling.  The reason for this is a masterfully plotted mystery. There were several red herrings in this mystery’s recipe and they all needed to be sifted through to find the real killer and I figured it out just as Val did. Isn’t that what we readers want?

The author has served up a wonderful story with more than mystery to solve, a pinch of romance and a morsel of humor. It also contains a huge “hang on to your seat” moment that had my heart pumping.

I am truly excited for the next book in this series. I think the author has just given a tidbit of what she can dish up. “What are the chances of another murder in a peaceful small town?” We shall have to wait and see…

Cozy Wednesday with Nancy Coco – Author of To Fudge or Not To Fudge (Giveaway too!)

cozy wednesday 2013 640Welcome to Cozy Wednesday!

I am so happy to welcome Nancy Coco to Escape With Dollycas this week!!

Nancy Coco talks about
Mackinac Island Michigan and the Glories of Fall

114I grew up in part in the great State of Michigan with its sweeping, softly sanded coastline. The deciduous forests with trees so tall you have to back up to look at them. Waterfalls, lakes, sand dunes and the glorious orchards of apples, cherries, and peaches, plus fields of veggies and blueberries give the state its natural paradise feel. There is nothing better than to take an Autumn trip up the coast to the Mackinaw suspension bridge that connects the upper and lower peninsulas of the State. Between the peninsulas in the straits, lies Mackinac Island. Yes, they are spelled differently, but pronounced the same.

fall-2012-mackinac-island-067 (1)The Island itself is lost in time with its “no automobile” rule and its lovely painted-lady Victorian cottages. Main Street is filled with the sound of horse hooves clipping along from the horse drawn carriages. The bells from the bicycles going by and the sound of crowds of happy tourists here to take in the old fort, the old fashioned way to get around and the lovely fresh lake breezes. There is a beautiful calm in the crisp air of Fall. The trees are bright in their Autumn dresses of red, orange, yellow and burgundy. Rich chocolate scents waft out of fudge shops along with the caramel and apple scents of popcorn and candied apples.

To Fudge or not to fudge_snipped coverIt is my pleasure and honor to set the Candy Coated Mystery Series on this magical island. Alli McMurphy’s Historic Inn and Fudge Shop is a fun place for the magic of community, candy making, and, of course, the who dunnit. To Fudge or Not to Fudge is set in the month of June when the lilacs come out and the Island is awash in Spring smells and a gorgeous explosion of pastel color. Whether you have a chance to visit in the Spring, Summer, or Fall, I hope you get an opportunity to visit the “Island that Time Forgot.” At the very least I hope that Allie, Mal, and the Candy-Coated Mystery series can depart a tiny bit of the flavor and feeling that you find in any season in Mackinac Island, Michigan.

Mackinac_Bridge_SunsetTell me, what is your favorite vacation spot and would you want a mystery series set there?

With summer in bloom and tourists afoot, Allie is out walking her pup, Mal, when the curious canine digs up a bone from under a flowering lilac bush. The bone leads to a toe that’s missing a body. For the successful confectionaire it’s only the first in a series of sour events in the middle of the island’s Lilac Fest. When her stint on a cooking reality show swirls up a trail of foul play, Allie will have to outwit a cunning killer if she wants to continue living la dolce vida…

Dollycas’s Thoughts

This was quite a book. A reality cooking show has come to Mackinac Island and it bring Allie’s former mentor Chef Peter Thomas to town.  He even talks her into appearing on the show! Mal also finds an interesting item while out for a walk.  A bone buried in a bit of mulch, wait is that nail polish, OMG, that’s a toe bone!!

Nancy Coco has written a magnificent mystery! I was engaged from the first page until the last. She has created fun and entertaining characters and there are quite a few suspects. I also loved that there were 2 dogs involved in the story. One very well behaved and one not so much. I was laughing as the police were chasing the one who refused to drop his sensational find.  Again Allie is under  suspicion but she is hot on the trail to clear her name.

I love the setting too. It has been many years since I visited Mackinaw Island but I remember the great time we had. It is a truly a unique place and if you are in the area one you should definitely visit. Because of its location it is a great place to have a mystery or two or more.

This cozy has it all – a well plotted mystery, fantastic characters, the perfect amount of humor, all set in a beautiful place.

Oh and don’t forget the recipes and the fudge making knowledge we gain by reading about Allie’s daily demonstrations!! There’s a Dark Chocolate Peppermint Fudge I can’t wait to try for the upcoming holidays.
