It’s hard to imagine anything bad ever happening in picturesque Haven Harbor, Maine–until a famous face rolls into town and unthreads some very dark secrets. . .

Angie Curtis and the Mainely Needlepointers are all too familiar with the Gardener estate. The crumbling Victorian mansion, known as “Aurora,” has been sitting vacant for nearly twenty-five years–and some say it’s haunted by the ghost of Jasmine Gardener, the teenage girl who died there in 1970 under mysterious circumstances…

Harbor Haven is abuzz with excitement when Hollywood actress Skye West decides to buy Aurora and sell off its furnishings. And Angie is intrigued when Skye asks her to appraise the estate’s sizable collection of needlepoint pictures. But the more she examines the pieces, the more they seem to point toward Jasmine’s murder–and the murderer–and it’s up to her to stitch the clues together. . .

Dollycas’s Thoughts

I loved this story even more than the last.

Aurora is the name of an estate outside of Harbor Haven that has been vacant for years. It is a Victorian with a past.  A young lady,  Jasmine Gardener, died there at an end of summer party back in 1970. The case is still open. The youngest member of the Mainely Needlepointers, Sarah, runs an antique store and she had a visitor come in saying his mother has bought the home and plans to bring the old place back to life. They needed someone to go through the house and separate the trash from treasure. Sarah quickly accepts the job and brings Angie along to assist her. There are several needlepoint items throughout the house. The most salvageable are a group of framed pictures depicting special places around Harbor Haven including Aurora.   The woman that purchased the home is Skye West, a Hollywood actress. She seems to be very interested in Jasmine’s death, she believes the girl was murdered and that with a little help she can solve the case. Could that help come from the Mainely Needlepointers? I don’t think Angie could stay out of it if she tried.

Again Angie and Gram stole my heart, but Skye’s story was very interesting too. The more we learn the faster the pages start to turn. It was almost impossible to put the book down. I made the mistake of starting this book on a very busy weekend for me. My solution was take the book with me everywhere I went and read it every chance I had. I had reached a very exciting part right when we had reached our destination and was torn whether to join the family or keep reading. Well of course I joined the family, but as soon as we arrived home that night I curled up with the book and didn’t move until I finished.

This story has something for everyone, a strong mystery that is so well written, fabulous characters you will love, humor, romance, and suspense too. The entire story was very unique and I was totally surprised at the ending. You do not have to know anything about needlepoint to enjoy this story but if you do I predict you will love it as much or more than I did.

The next book in the series Thread and Gone comes out the end of December.

Review/Giveaway – A Deceptive Homecoming by Anna Loan-Wilsey

DECEPTIVE HOMECOMINGA Deceptive Homecoming
(A Hattie Davish Mystery)

Historical Cozy Mystery
4th in Series
Setting – Missouri
Publisher: Kensington (July 28, 2015)
Paperback: 304 pages
ISBN-13: 978-1617737268
E-Book ASIN: B00P53E0L2

Traveling secretary Hattie Davish is returning to her once-quiet hometown, where a deluge of deadly secrets leaves her feeling anything but welcome…

When her good friend Virginia Hayward’s father passes away, Hattie Davish rushes to her hometown of St. Joseph, Missouri. She’s looking forward to visiting the place where she grew up, even if the circumstances bringing her there are bleak. But upon her arrival, she learns that all is not well in St. Joe.

Virginia is cold and distant, Frank Hayward’s death is shrouded in mystery, and a string of troubling incidents have descended on Hattie’s alma mater, Mrs. Chaplin’s School for Women. Frank was the school’s bookkeeper, and as Hattie begins investigating the bizarre goings-on, she becomes convinced that someone other than Frank was in the casket—but who? Her search for the truth takes her from the town cemetery, to the home of an infamous outlaw, to the dungeon-like tunnels beneath the State Lunatic Asylum—and brings her face-to-face with a killer bent on the deadliest lesson of all…

Dollycas’s Thoughts

In this 4th installment we travel back to St. Joseph, Missouri and the school Hattie Davish attended, Mrs. Chaplin’s School for Women. She was their star pupil and gave her the training she needed to become a personal secretary. Her studies have also helped her become quite a amateur detective too.

There was plenty of deception going on throughout the entire book. Hattie’s homecoming turned out very different from anything she ever imagined. Virginia was her best friend. When Hattie received word that her friend’s father had passed away she made immediate plans to return to Missouri, but Virginia was very surprised to see her there. If Virginia didn’t send her the funeral notice who did? More questions arise when she peers into the casket. While the man’s face was disfigured by the accident that killed him Hattie doesn’t think the body belongs to Virginia’s father. Who else would it be? Hattie also hears rumblings about strange happenings at the school. Could all these things be connected?

This is a fantastic story. Hattie is such a strong woman with strong principles and an excellent role model. It is easy to see why Mrs. Chaplin thinks so much of her. All the secondary characters were so wonderfully written. I formed immediate images of just what they looked and acted like.

The author takes Hattie and the others into some very unique and a couple down-right scary situations. There was a part that was like watching a horror movie where you find yourself yelling at the screen, “NO! Don’t follow him!” Turn around! Come Back!” Okay I was yelling in my head but I was loudly yelling in my head!

We are taken to the Hayward home, the Chaplin home, the school, a historic landmark, and even to a lunatic asylum. We also travel the streets of St. Joe and along the river. All perfectly described and so easy to envision.

Things moved slower back then but this story is very fast paced with more than one edge of your seat moment. I absolutely love the way Anna Loan-Wilsey writes. I am ready for book #5 right now!

Freelance writer Jaine Austen thought she knew what she was getting herself into when she landed a gig working behind the scenes at a teen beauty pageant. But between the vicious stage moms, exacting judges, and trash-talking teens, she’s not sure she’s the woman for the job—especially when the catfights turn deadly…

Jaine has been hired by über-pushy stage mom Heather Van Sant to write lyrics for her daughter Taylor’s song in the talent competition for the Miss Teen Queen America pageant. It’s different from anything Jaine has done before, but if nothing else, she’s looking forward to a free weekend in a swanky hotel and a chance to see what really goes on backstage at a beauty pageant. But the hotel is a dump, the cattiness is out of control, and Candace—the perfectly-coiffed, whip-cracking pageant director—is making even Jaine’s life miserable.

When Candace’s assistant Amy is found bludgeoned to death with a silver tiara, there are more suspects than sequins on a pageant gown—and Heather is first on the list. Taylor begs Jaine to help clear her mom’s name, but the search for the killer hits a dead end as Jaine quickly realizes that finding the culprit is going to be trickier than walking the stage in stilettos…

For Newport, Rhode Island’s high society, the summer of 1896 brings lawn parties, sailboat races…and murder.

Having turned down the proposal of Derrick Andrews, Emma Cross has no imminent plans for matrimony—let alone motherhood. But when she discovers an infant left on her doorstep, she naturally takes the child into her care. Using her influence as a cousin to the Vanderbilts and a society page reporter for the Newport Observer , Emma launches a discreet search for the baby’s mother.

One of her first stops is a lawn party at Mrs. Caroline Astor’s Beechwood estate. But an idyllic summer’s day is soon clouded by tragedy. During a sailboat race, textile magnate Virgil Monroe falls overboard. There are prompt accusations of foul play—and even Derrick Andrews falls under suspicion. Deepening the intrigue, a telltale slip of lace may link the abandoned child to the drowned man. But as Emma navigates dark undercurrents of scandalous indiscretions and violent passions, she’ll need to watch her step to ensure that no one lowers the boom on her…

Dollycas’s Thoughts

I absolutely love this series! Emma Cross is a smart protagonist and I love following her through 1896 Rhode Island. She is a brave woman who sticks up for those in need. This time it is a baby left on her doorstep and she will not rest until she finds his mother, even when it puts her own life in danger.

Gull Manor has become a refuge over the years for prostitutes and abused women wanting a fresh start and Emma has vowed to keep up the tradition even though many do not approve. She never expected a newborn would find its way to her door, a newborn that steals the heart of everyone at Gull Manor. Nor did she realize the sweet child would be connected to such tragedy.

Alyssa Maxwell bases her story on actual families, like the Vanderbilts and the Astors and crafts a tale that will will enthrall you from the first page until the last. She takes us into the world of the elite 400. Their lives, their parties, their indiscretions and their drama. The characters are so well written, the plot is enticing and the setting is described wonderfully. The story is perfectly paced with generous detail.

Each new story in this series becomes my favorite as the author keeps topping herself.

Devil’s Food Cake Murder by Joanne Fluke – My June Just For Fun Read

just for fun 2015
I am continuing my quest to get caught up the Hannah Swenson Mysteries.devil food

Devil’s Food Cake Murder (A Hannah Swensen Mystery)
14th in Series
Cozy Mystery
Setting – Minnesora
Publisher: Kensington
Mass Market Paperback: 352 pages (February 1, 2012)
ISBN-13: 978-0758234926
E-Book ASIN: B006QOTOQA
Hannah Swensen has to admit life is pretty sweet. Things are going well in the romance department and her bakery’s delectable confections are selling as fast as she can bake them. Even her good friend Claire is head over heels with her new husband, Reverend Bob Knudson. If only they could find time to take their honeymoon!

When Bob’s childhood friend, Matthew Walters, comes to town, it seems like divine intervention. Matthew, like Bob, is a Lutheran minister with a stubborn sweet tooth. Since he’s on sabbatical, Matthew is happy to fill in for Bob while he and Claire take that long-awaited honeymoon. It sounds like the perfect plan–until Hannah finds Matthew face-down in a plate full of Devil’s Food Cake, a single bullet in his head. It will take some sleuthing to sift out the killer, but Hannah is sure of one thing: even the most half-baked murder plot can be oh so deadly. . .

Dollycas’s Thoughts

I was so excited to start this book because the author left us with a bit of a cliffhanger last time. We start with Reverend Bob and Claire off on their honeymoon since they have found another minister to fill in. Matthew just happens to a childhood friend of Bob’s so he feels his church is in good hands. He was doing a fantastic job until Hannah finds him dead, with a single bullet wound and in a mess of Devil’s Food Cake.

I love the series and all the characters. Hannah has two men vying for her attention but they also have another woman on their radar now and that is very upsetting to Hannah. I have a bit of a problem with this. Hannah has been stringing both men along for quite some time while she decides which one she wants to settle down with. This time it seems maybe she does not feel strongly enough about either of them. I like that she is getting a little dose of her own medicine and that was fun to read. I wouldn’t mind her giving both of them the boot.  Again there is a bit of a shocker at the end of this story as this romantic triangle takes a very surprising turn.

The mystery was good but not overly complex and I did figure it out a little early. That being said I did enjoy the time Hannah spent with Grandma Knudson. She seems like quite a woman and we quickly learn not much gets by her.

This is one of my favorite series but this wasn’t by favorite story in the series. The book is filled with a bunch of tempting recipes and it is always good to visit Lake Eden.

I am looking forward to the next book Cinnamon Roll Murder  and the next movie too! Plum Pudding Murder is coming to the Hallmark Movie Channel this holiday season.

still at the beach but not as tranquil

After talking her way into a job writing for Portland’s Northwest Extreme magazine, Meg Reed may now really be in over her head. Actually, about 8,000 feet over her head. . .

She’s at Mount Hood’s remote Silcox Hut, covering the the seriously hardcore Ridge Rangers– Oregon’s elite high-altitude rescue team–during their four-day winter training. Sure, Meg beefed up her outdoor skills over the summer . . . but she’s still hoping to cover the event with some hot chocolate by the cheery fireplace. Then, during a sudden blizzard, she swears she hears gunshots. No one stranded in the hut believes her . . . until self-absorbed Ridge Ranger Ben Rogers is found outside in a pool of frozen blood. Meg’s now got to find this killer quickly . . . before cabin fever does them all in!

Dollycas’s Thoughts

I have been waiting for this book, thankfully we weren’t kept waiting a whole year!

Meg is back and off on another adventure and again she is not prepared and I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT!! She thinks a little “training” she did over the summer will be able to make her look like she knows what she is doing and fool her boss. Well she is prepared for roughing in front of the fireplace but she can’t ski and her cute little gloves are not going to keep her warm as she observes the Ridge Rangers. She does know what gunshots sound like and she knows they mean trouble especially when the head Ridge Ranger is found dead!

This girl she can get herself in the middle of things even when she is trying hard to avoid them. Her father was a journalist too and was killed. She hears his voice in her head throughout the entire story and there are several unanswered questions about his death. This was touched on in the first book and that subplot continues in this one.

Again in addition to the great cast of characters the setting is a character too. The author describes everything so wonderfully, from the blizzard and piles of snow to the frigid temps. Burrrrrrr!!! Traveling up an down the mountain from the main lodge to the remote Silcox Hut, I could picture it so vividly.

This was a fantastic story with a huge OMG moment! The main mystery was so good. I was suspecting everyone at one point or another. I had just one little issue with sometime Meg had a hard time with near the end of  the story but I don’t want to spoil anything but those of you that know me will know exactly what I am talking about when you read the story.

I am already waiting the next edition, these cliffhangers are killer, lol!!!

Includes Photo Tips And Tasty Recipes

If you haven’t met the Happy Hoofers check out my review of the first book, Chorus Lines, Caviar, and Corpses here.
Amazon has the Kindle Version on sale for $1.99 right now.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Gini narrates this time and she a force to be reckoned with. She has a hard time holding her tongue and that lands her on the suspect list.

I like these stories because these woman are my age and I wish I could be traveling right along with them. I am mystery fan so even the dead bodies wouldn’t both me too much….yeah right…well I would hope I could help them sleuth out the killer.

Set on a train traveling through Green Spain sounds just spectacular except when a murder means the passengers are stuck on the train instead of seeing the sights. The Happy Hoofers have made friends with certain people though that allows them to travel to some local tourist attractions and restaurants, but they are usually quick secret excursions.

This is basically a closed mystery meaning the killer has to be someone on the train even though it makes several stops. Even in the close quarters these ladies find a way to snoop and eavesdropping is pretty easy with everyone so close together. There are more than a few twists before the true culprit is revealed and I was thrilled that I was on the right track.

I did enjoy the disabled passenger on the train. Their experience mirrored mine about life in a wheelchair and they offered some great insight.

Mary McHugh has penned a very humorous mystery with a key emphasis on friendship. There is a bit of romance too. Love always seems to bloom when people travel. The recipes are great too!

This can be read as a stand alone but recommend starting at the beginning with Chorus Lines, Caviar, and Corpses. They are quick entertaining reads and a great way to spend an afternoon.

We don’t have long to wait for our next vacation with the Happy Hoofers. We head to France with Cancans, Croissants, and Caskets August 25.

Welcome to Mahalia’s Sweet Tea–the finest soul food restaurant in Prince George’s County, Maryland. In between preparing her famous cornbread and mashed potatoes so creamy “they’ll make you want to slap your Momma,” owner Halia Watkins is about to dip her spoon into a grisly mystery. . .

Halia Watkins has her hands full cooking, hosting, and keeping her boisterous young cousin, Wavonne, from getting too sassy with customers. Having fast-talking entrepreneur Marcus Rand turn up in her kitchen is annoying enough when he’s alive–but finding his dead body face-down on her ceramic tile after hours is much worse.

Marcus had his enemies, and the cast iron frying pan beside his corpse suggests that at last, his shady business deals went too far. Halia is desperate to keep Sweet Tea’s name out of the sordid spotlight but her efforts only make Wavonne a prime suspect. Now Halia will have to serve up the real villain–before the killer returns for a second helping. . .

Features delicious recipes from Mahalia’s Sweet Tea, including Sour Cream Corn Bread and Sweet Corn Casserole!

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Haila and Wavonne are absolutely laugh out loud funny. Wavonne reminded me of Lula from Janet Evanovich’s Stephanie Plum series but she is even funnier.

These two are in a fine mess when they find Marcus Rand, Haila’s silent partner, dead in Mahalia’s Sweet Tea. He is even more silent now. It looks like he has been hit upside the head with a cast iron frying pan. Haila panics when she thinks finding a dead body in her kitchen will mean the end of the Sweet Tea, so she decides to move the body. Wavonne is talked into helping her but she does something that soon will have her listed as the police’s prime suspect. Haila decides to find the real killer before her cousin ends up in the slammer and hilarity and drama ensues.

I was grabbed by the title of  this book and was completely drawn in to the story. The characters are full of humor, the mystery is great and the recipes and food sound delicious! Mahalia’s Sweet Tea sounds like a perfect place to visit for some fine fresh home-made food the will warm your soul. Haila has great business sense that she puts to good use and she tries figure out who relieved the world of Marcus’ misery. Turns out there are plenty of suspects. Wavonne is a gem who doesn’t have a lot of ambition but heart is in the right place.

I can’t find out anything about this author but they are off to a fantastic start with this series. Set in a place near plenty of action I can’t wait to see what kind of mess Haila and Wavonne get into next.
