After a celebrity ghostwriter dies on the job, Old Town’s favorite entertaining expert and sporadic sleuth, Sophie Winston, whips up an impromptu investigation in the new Domestic Diva mystery from New York Times bestselling author, Krista Davis . . .

Sophie never considered ghostwriting as a side gig, until former actress and aspiring lifestyle guru, Tilly Stratford, trophy wife of Wesley Winthrope, needs someone to write her celebrity cookbook. Sophie agrees, hoping she’ll earn enough bread on this assignment to finish her bathroom renovations. But as it turns out, Sophie isn’t the first foodie to get a taste for recipe ghostwriting, and if the marginalia are any indication, this project could be a killer . . .

Wesley claims professional ghostwriter, Abby Bergeron, suddenly abandoned Tilly’s cookbook with no warning. But Sophie quickly discovers that Abby may be more ghost than writer now . . . and her disappearance was no accident. So Sophie cracks open a fresh investigation, but sifting the seasoned murderer from this sampling of salty suspects won’t be easy. Will Sophie savor another case closed or will the culprit simply melt away?

Includes delicious recipes and entertaining tips!

Dollycas’s Thoughts

In this 13th installment of this fun series, Mars hooks Sophie up with Tilly Stratford, a renowned lifestyle guru, to finish ghostwriting her celebrity cookbook. Sophie is already planning to renovate her bathroom with the money she will make. But first, she needs to find out what happened to the previous ghostwriter who quit without warning and disappeared.

Diva Natasha has some drama of her own as she finds she has a new relative through DNA testing. She better keep her eye her business though or someone may just snatch her dream job away from her while she is taking care of family matters.

__________

This is truly one of my favorite cozy series and not just because the author always serves readers a delightful mystery to solve. What I really love is the relationships that have evolved over the course of the series and continue to grow in each new story. Sophie and Mars really care about each other even knowing they just can’t work as a couple. Now that he has divorced Natasha the relationship is even more comfortable. The fact that Sophie is with Alex and that everyone coexists is so refreshing. Also while Natasha and Sophie will never be besties, Sophie is strong enough to be there when Natasha beckons. All the character development is marvelous and the dialogue is realistic.

Now this mystery was quite a twister. Many subplots roll around together leading to a compelling conclusion. Turns, misdirection, and a fair share of red herrings keep everyone on their toes. One body, then another, a suitcase caught by a fisherman, and it is still mystifying how everything fits into this puzzle. I was kept guessing the whole way.

As for spicing things up, I loved that Sophie took on ghostwriting a cookbook and the whole process she followed. From trying out the recipes and making them better to working with Tilly Stratford and the discovery Sophie made within the pages. The food and recipes were great but the way the cookbook played into the whole whodunit was brilliant.

The Diva Spices It Up is an excellent addition to this series. I recommend the whole batch but you can jump in anywhere as Ms. Davis always gives plenty of background on these fabulous characters. I truly can’t wait for the next Domestic Diva Mystery.

Cozy Wednesday with Krista Davis- Author of The Dog Who Knew Too Much (A Paws & Claws Mystery) #GuestPost / #Review / #Giveaway @BerkleyMystery

Welcome to Cozy Wednesday!

I am so excited to welcome Krista Davis
back to Escape With Dollycas today!

Krista DavisIs Your Dog Training You?
by Krista Davis
(Provided by Publicist)

There’s so much emphasis on training our dogs. And for good reason. We need their cooperation for their own safety. So I was fascinated when I heard that speech pathologist Christina Hunger flipped things around and set up a talking-board for her dog to speak with her!  He steps on buttons to communicate with her.

That started me thinking about how much our cats and dogs train us. While we’re busy teaching them “sit” and “stay,” our dogs are giving us cues, too. My dog, Baron, leads me to the location of the treat he wants. He knows they’re in different cupboards. If I follow him, he will stop and stare at the cabinet or drawer where the desired treats are stashed. He doesn’t let me forget, either. He knows he gets to clean his teeth after dinner. He doesn’t care how comfy I might have gotten on the couch. He must have his brushing chew!

And my cat, Sunny, learned to bang her empty food dish on the counter when she’s hungry.  Naturally, the sound gets an immediate reaction from me because I don’t want anything to crash to the floor. She’s feeling pretty good about teaching me that little trick.

The animals in Wagtail, where the Paws & Claws Mysteries are set, aren’t always perfectly behaved by human standards. When Jack Russell Terrier, Trixie, gets a whiff of a corpse, there’s no stopping her. She’s off to locate it. I read once that Bassett Hounds often get lost because they follow scents with their noses and when they finally look up, they’re not sure where they are! Trixie is like that when she’s on the trail of a deadly smell. No amount of calling or coaxing can drag her away from tracking down a corpse.

In The Dog Who Knew Too Much Trixie has company. America’s favorite dog is taking a much-deserved vacation in Wagtail. He’s thrilled to be hanging out with other dogs instead of making commercials and quickly becomes friends with Trixie. There’s trouble afoot, though, as dogs go missing. Only one dog knows too much and is able to put the right scents together, exposing the killer.

What has your dog or cat trained you to do?

~Krista

Thank you, Krista, for visiting today!

The Dog Who Knew Too Much (A Paws & Claws Mystery)

6th in Series
Setting – Virginia
Publisher: Berkley (November 26, 2019)
Mass Market Paperback: 304 pages
ISBN-10: 0451491688
ISBN-13: 978-0451491688

When a famous pooch comes to Wagtail for some downtime, inn owner Holly Miller learns that murder never rests in this all-new Paws & Claws mystery in the New York Times bestselling series.

America’s favorite dog comes to pet-friendly Wagtail for some rest and relaxation, but Holly quickly discovers that this perfect pup is a total scamp who takes every opportunity to run off and misbehave. During an outdoor treasure-hunting game, the star dog and Trixie, Holly’s beloved Jack Russell terrier, stumble across a dead body.

Holly has more than murder to worry about, though, when a man shows up after reading an article featuring Trixie in a magazine and claims that he is the dog’s rightful owner. Holly will need to prove that she is her pup’s only parent and catch a killer to restore peace to her pet-loving happy place.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

After a brief hiatus Holly, Oma Liesel, Zelda, Mr. Huckle, Gingersnap, Twinkletoes, and Trixie are back and I am thrilled!

Wagtail welcomes America’s favorite dog, Pippin, his co-stars, and entourage for a bit of a vacation before they start filming. The community has set up a treasure hunting game as an event for people to meet the star of the show but Trixie’s nose has other ideas. Yup, she has found another dead body and the death may be linked to the town’s newest visitors.

The town is also up in arms as dogs disappearing, two so far. Plus a man claiming to be Trixie’s rightful owner tries to take the dog away from Holly.

It is all paws on deck as Holly tries to find the missing pups and a killer before Wagtail is no longer safe for man, woman, or their lovable beasts.

The entire concept of Wagtail is absolutely delightful. Imagine an entire town dedicated to serving pets and their people. When you go on vacation leaving your pets in a kennel or with friends checking in on them can be heartbreaking for everyone. Wagtail is the perfect locale for all.

Krista Davis has created such wonderful characters, both humans and their pets. They are all well-developed and practically leap off the page. I have to say all of the dogs quickly worked their way into my heart. Twinkletoes too in her own standoffish way.  The core set of characters continues to grow and we learn a few secrets along the way. The new characters this time were a quirky group with some secrets of their own.

One dog, Stella loses her person and everyone looks out for her. Even the dogs. I loved the way the author dealt with her feelings throughout the entire story. At first, it brought a tear to my eye, but soon my heart was warmed by all the love and care Stella received.

In addition to the great world-building of Wagtail and its residents and visitors, Ms. Davis gives readers a marvelous mystery to sink our teeth into. All the subplots blend in seamlessly with the mystery plot. The author sets a fast but comfortable pace.  Clues are dropped amongst several twists to keep our tails wagging as we are in hot pursuit to solve the mystery. The murder’s weapon of choice was interesting and scary, something you would never think would be found in the small town of Wagtail, but it shines a light on a real problem in the world today. So much happens within the pages of this book I was impressed with the way everything came together in the end.

I really didn’t want this story to end though. I love hanging out with these characters and I truly wish Wagtail was a real place to visit. I would pack my bags and move there as soon as possible. I hope we get to visit again soon.

The Dog Who Knew Too Much is an entertaining and heartwarming story full of wonderful characters set in an idyllic place for pet lovers far and wide. I highly recommend the entire Paws & Claws Mystery Series! Check out all the covers, they are adorable.

The first book in this series received my Paradise Rating but
I made a huge mistake with this book and scheduled its release date on my calendar wrong.
My calendar was packed and I finally gave up trying to fit it into the regular schedule and scheduled it for the Flashback Friday feature so I could read the book that wasn’t

Life is looking rosy for Florrie Fox, manager of the Color Me Read bookstore in Georgetown, Washington D.C. She’s working on an adult coloring book of gardens, her romance with Sergeant Eric Jonquille has entered a new chapter, and the bookstore’s weekly coloring club is a source of friendship and entertainment. No member is more vibrant than Dolly Cavanaugh. Dolly likes to say she was blessed with beauty and cursed with lousy husbands, but at least she has a grown daughter and a stunning brownstone to show for it!

When Dolly’s love of garage sales results in her showing up at Color Me Read with a rare book in hand, Florrie is astounded. The Florist, the earliest known coloring book, was first published in 1760. An original copy would be worth a fortune—and someone else knows it. That same evening, Florrie finds Dolly dead on the floor of her apartment, a corner of a coloring book page clutched in her hand. As Florrie delves into Dolly’s past and her personal effects, she discovers a skeleton in the closet—literally—and a whole lot of shady suspects. One of them is an expert in the fine art of murder, but can Florrie draw the right conclusion?

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Florrie Fox is happy. She is working a Color Me Read where she has started a coloring book club. She looks over and sees coloring books she has created on the shelves. She is working on one now featuring beautiful gardens. Her relationship with Sergeant Eric Jonquille is entering a new phase, and she has settled in nicely to her boss John Maxwell’s guest house.

In The Coloring Crook, Dolly Cavanaugh, a member of the coloring book group, takes Florrie to an estate sale. Later Dolly comes into the bookstore showing off one of her purchases. A very rare coloring book, which Florrie does her best to authenticate. This book could be worth a fortune. Dolly makes a HUGE mistake by touting her amazing purchase on social media. People start coming out of the woodwork wanting to buy this book, including the woman who sold the book at the estate sale.

Florrie stops by Dolly’s home after work and finds poor Dolly on the floor dead with a piece of a page of the 1760 coloring book in her hand. The rest of the book is missing. The police believe she died of natural causes but Florrie believes it was clearly murder. She feels responsible for not warning Dolly to keep her prize safe and secret until it could be sold through a reputable party. She decides to do a little sleuthing on her own and she makes some surprising discoveries.  She also has compiled a good list of suspects. When the police finally get on board she thinks their suspect is being set up. She must be right because now she has a target on her back.

Because we share a name, this Dolly immediately had a soft spot for Dolly Cavanaugh. We have a few things in common but I am very close to my children and have one wonderful husband. I do like a good garage sale find and am enjoying the adult coloring book craze. I was sorry she had to be the victim but I loved that story the evolved from her death.

The book had a perfect pace and was well-written. The characters were very engaging and developed. The author has taken the core characters in a very pleasing direction. The story was complex with more than one mystery to solve. Ms. Davis did take a few legal sidesteps with no will being produced or read while Dolly’s daughter started disposing of her mother’s belongings and was giving tenants notice because she was selling the house very quickly. The case was still open and one new discovery should have stopped her actions in their tracks. That aside I truly enjoyed the story and am looking forward to the next book.

The author informs readers that the coloring book referenced in her story, The Florist is real and that one of the copies is at the Peter F. Raven Library/Missouri Botanical Gardens. So short of a lengthy road trip I just had to look the book up online and found several pages. You can check out pictures here. I love reading fiction stories where I can learn something too.

This book can be read on its own but I recommend starting with Color Me Murder. Both books have covers ready for you to color.

In New York Times bestselling author Krista Davis’s new Domestic Diva mystery, Old Town’s annual Pie Festival crumbles into chaos after a celebrity judge is murdered, leaving it up to entertaining maven and sometime-sleuth Sophie Winston to dole out justice . . .

Nothing heats up Old Town quite like the annual Pie Festival, and this year is no exception, especially since Sophie’s professional rival, Natasha Smith, is barred from participating. Sophie, meanwhile, has been asked to oversee the pie eating contest. But the drama really rolls out when celebrity judge, Patsy Lee Presley, host of television’s most popular cooking show, bites the crust during the competition, and Sophie’s friends are suspected of the crime.

As the folks of Old Town dish, the tough truth about Patsy’s meteoric rise to domestic stardom begins to leak. It turns out that Patsy’s sweet exterior hid a secret sour side, which alienated many of her closest allies, including a jilted ex-husband, a bitter ex-mentor, and a jaded ex-best friend. With the festival falling apart, and her friends in danger of being boxed up for murder, Sophie must cobble together the clues and stop a flakey fiend from serving up any more deadly desserts.

Includes delicious recipes and entertaining tips!

Dollycas’s Thoughts

What a sweet mystery!!

Hometown foodie celebrity Patsy Lee Presley has come back to Old Town to be a judge for the annual Pie Festival. A festival diva Natasha Smith has been banned from participating in and that Sophie has been a key assistant to the organizer. As the pies are about to be judged Patsy tumbles right into a pie and dies. The police secure the scene quickly and many of Sophie’s friends are pieces of interest in the investigation’s pie. Patsy’s ex-husband also makes the list. As Sophie starts to sift through the clues she learns that Patsy isn’t the sweetheart she thought and that most of the people suspected of her death have the big three ingredients – Motive – Means – Opportunity. Sophie just needs to break through their crusts and find which one has baked their last pie.

Sophie is also approached by a 12-year-old girl asking for help for her mom. Her mother had been convicted of a murder that according to her daughter she didn’t commit. Nellie Stokes has been in prison for 5 years, 3 months and 4 days. Daughter Aly marks each day on the calendar to keep track. Sophie looked at a picture of the woman and decided she had to help.

What I really love about this series is the friendships. The way the people of Old Town come together to help and support each other but also to have a lot of fun. There seems to always be something happening, sadly some of the times a murder breaks up the fun. When that happens Sophie is usually drawn right in the middle of the case. This time a subsequent event makes things personal for Sophie even drawing attention to her in an unexpected way. Thankfully, her stellar friends, Nina Reid Norwood, Bernie Frei, and her ex-husband, Mars Winston always have her back.

All the series regulars have continued to evolve realistically. Natasha is still the prickly and sometimes clueless diva and Sophie is usually the voice of calm and reason. Mars now divorced from Natasha is around even more and still a great friend for Sophie. Boyfriend Alex is nervous about Sophie’s involvement in all the murder queries but tries to understand her need to be involved. We do meet Patsy Lee Presley who had she lived could have really given Natasha a run for her money. Patsy had the life of Natasha dreams.

I really enjoy the way Ms. Davis twists things up. Characters new and old are all involved. Clues are deliberately sprinkled throughout and red herring are mixed right in. Stirred within the mysteries to solve, the daily life of Old Town residents soldiers on. All blended together with a dollop of humor and a dash of romance. Krista Davis is an excellent storyteller. So well-written and well-plotted. I was kept guessing right up to the end.

I highly recommend this whole series! It is best to read them in order but there is plenty of background in this story so don’t hesitate to jump in with this book.

Bonus – Scrumptious recipes and baking and entertaining tips!

Domestic diva Sophie Winston can whip up an elaborate event in her sleep, but as the hippest hostess, she rarely gets to enjoy the full guest treatment. Which is why her best friend Nina Reid Norwood loops her into the latest culinary craze: a pop-up gourmet dinner party. The celebrity chef, the epicurean menu, and the high-profile attendees are all a surprise, turning the decadent dining experience into the hottest ticket in Old Town. But Sophie’s just pleased as punch that she finally has an opportunity to join her fellow foodies in some fun.

The posh party proves to be a recipe for disaster when Hollis Haberman sours spirits by bringing his own hot new dish—his young trophy wife. With Hollis’s son and ex-wife in attendance, there may be more heat at the table than in the kitchen. But the next morning, Sophie discovers Hollis swallowing his last bits of air, and she must scramble to stop a killer before anyone else eats their last meal.

Includes delicious recipes and entertaining tips!

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Sophie and Nina had planned a mini vacay to the beach, but an impending hurricane has changed their plans. A pop-up dinner party is just what they need. An event planned by someone else where they can sit back and enjoy the food with their friends. But not everyone is enjoying the event, Hollis Haberman and his young new wife are in attendance as are his ex-wife and their son. Most of the town has shunned the new bride while remaining friendly with the ex.

The next morning the storm is coming closer to Old Town so Sophie heads out for a quick walk but finds Hollis Haberman having some kind of attack in front of his house. EMTs are called and he is rushed to the hospital but he doesn’t survive. It is an unusual death. He has asked for Sophie’s help because he thought he was been poisoned and the police seem to concur but they’re not sure how. Could it have been in the food at the party? or has it built up over time? His young bride is so upset and she is sure she is going to be arrested. Sophie agrees to look into the case herself hoping she doesn’t end up in a storm of trouble herself.

I really enjoy these characters, even Natasha. I love the way they come together when someone is in need or when they get together to celebrate. A heavy storm hits Old Town leaving the community without electricity. What does this gang do? The organize a street party so people can cook up or grill the food that would have been ruined by the lack of power to keep it cold. The party also gives the crew to do a little covert investigating. Friendship really blooms within the pages.

Poison is a common method of murder in cozy mysteries, but this time the author gives it a unique twist and they added some distinct turns that really opened up the pool of suspects. She kept me guessing right up to her grand reveal. I love when a story diverts my thinking so much that I and the protagonist have our “aha moment” together.

The author packs so much into these pages. The pacing and plotting are excellent. The characters are very real and most are very down to earth. The story contains the exact right amount of humor in relation to the drama. Krista Davis is a skilled storyteller with the perfect recipe for her cozy mysteries.

I highly recommend this entire series, but if you are new to it, don’t worry, there is plenty of background provided to dive right into this one. Then you can go back and start at the beginning to see all the world building and character development.

#FlashbackFriday – The Diva Serves High Tea (A Domestic Diva Mystery) by Krista Davis #Review / #Giveaway

On Flashback Fridays I will share with you
the books I was not able to review
when they were first released that have been screaming at me
from my To-Be-Read bookshelf.

This is the last book in this series released by Berkley/Penguin Random House.
The series has now found a new home at Kensington Books.
The Diva Cooks up a Storm was released on Tuesday and I will be reviewing it here next Tuesday.

The Diva Serves High Tea (A Domestic Diva Mystery)
Cozy Mystery
10th in Series
Setting – Virginia
A Berkley Prime Crime Mystery
Release Date – June 7, 2016
Mass Market Paperback: 304 pages
ISBN-13: 978-0425282656
Kindle ASIN: B016JPTQCW

When The Parlour opens up in town, domestic diva Sophie Winston finally has a place to satisfy her cravings for all things tea and crumpet related. And the shop serves as the perfect place for the ladies of the town to gather and gossip, especially since it’s conveniently located right across the street from the new antique store run by the handsome and charming Robert Johnson.

But speculation around Robert really boils over when he’s found dead—a victim of poisoning after attending a literacy fundraiser at The Parlour the night before. What Sophie learns about the man leaves a bitter taste in her mouth, and she’ll have to strain out a killer from a strange brew of suspects…

Includes delicious recipes and entertaining tips!

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Time for tea! The Parlour is open and is hosting a literacy fundraiser, an auction. Our domestic diva, Sophie Winston, and her friends are there and bidding up a storm while enjoying the delightful fare the tea shop has provided.

The next morning Robert Johnson, the owner of the antique shop across the street from The Parlor is found dead. The police believe he was poisoned by something he ate at the fundraiser. The Parlor is shut down until all the food can be checked. No one else that attended the event got sick. There has to be another explanation. Sophie starts doing a little sleuthing of her own and she learns some very interesting things about the victim. She was right, there was a lot more brewing that anyone thought at first.

Spending time with Sophie and Natasha is always entertaining but this time there was a shocking development that made my heart soar!! These two have spatted back and forth for years but things may be about to change 🙂 Can’t say more because I do not want to spoil anything, but I did do a little chair dancing when I reached page 19.

Krista Davis is a cozy mystery master. She skillfully weaves everyday life with a well-plotted mystery. A mystery that is never easy to solve. Twists, turns, and tea abound within these pages making it almost impossible to put down. I especially enjoyed the descriptions of all teacups and the explanations of all the different types of tea.  The author also knows how to add the precise amount of comedy in relation to the drama giving readers the total cozy package.

The helpful hints that start each chapter are fun and unique. I tend to find myself agreeing with or more taken with the Dear Sophie columns that the Dear Natasha ones. I feel Natasha is a DIVA while Sophie is a more Diva for us common folk. 🙂

This was a positively delightful story. Brew up a pot of tea, sit back, relax and enjoy!

Cozy Wednesday with Krista Davis – Author of Color Me Murder (Pen & Ink) #GuestPost / #Review / #Giveaway @KensingtonBooks

Welcome to Cozy Wednesday!

I am so excited to welcome Krista Davis to Escape With Dollycas today to
tell us about her new book/series!

I love starting a new series. There’s nothing that’s more fun than imagining the location and bringing new characters to life.

When I started working on Color Me Murder, I knew that Florrie Fox would be an adult coloring book artist. I borrowed the name Florrie, which I heard recently and loved immediately. Doesn’t a Florrie sound like a kind and quiet person? But also someone who is fun! Then I gave her the day job of managing a bookstore. Originally, I thought she might own it with her grandfather, but when I started writing, that was just plain wrong. I scrapped the first thirty pages and started over!

Once I had a handle on her boss, the owner of the bookstore, things fell into place. John Maxwell is the ultimate absent-minded professor. He loathes confrontation and is a lousy manager but a great guy. He’s always searching for answers to historic mysteries. And he’s a well-known adventurer with an office full of interesting artifacts from his exotic travels.

Of course, Florrie had to have a boyfriend. But wait, maybe she wasn’t crazy about him. Maybe he would be a pain in the neck. As it turned out, he got her into some hot water with her mom. Not to worry, though, someone much more interesting would turn up soon.

But where to set this story? I seriously considered a small university town. Those still exist, don’t they? But the more I thought about it, the more I saw the bookstore in the Georgetown neighborhood of Washington, DC. It’s quaint, it’s very cool and chic, and the streets have that lovely neighborly feeling. Plus it’s full of diplomats and intellectuals who would provide fodder for future books.

The character of Mr. DuBois popped up out of nowhere. He’s a wizened old fellow and very proper. As John Maxwell’s butler, he takes care of the mansion and keeps track of the details that John forgets—like breakfast. Mr. DuBois is a bit agoraphobic, and he watches entirely too many true crime programs on TV. He’s an armchair amateur sleuth. Once in a while, he does something that is completely out of character and delights in it.

One of the things I love about the Pen & Ink Mysteries is that some of the clues are on the cover. If you look at the center of the cover, you’ll notice a cat, a plume, martini glasses, a stunning necklace, and more in an oval around the title. Every one of those is a clue to the mystery!

Oh! Did I mention that the front and back covers can be colored? I can’t wait to see how readers color the covers. In fact, I’m having a contest with prizes for the top three colored covers, to be chosen by a panel of your favorite authors! Stay tuned to my Facebook page and website for more information on the contest.

~Krista

Thank you, Krista, for being my guest today! This book is fantastic!

Now, let me tell you all about it.

Color Me Murder (Pen & Ink)
Cozy Mystery
1st in Series
Setting – Washington
Kensington (February 27, 2018)
Paperback: 304 pages
ISBN-13: 978-1496716408
Kindle ASIN: B0719VDGJ6

Includes A Front and Back Cover for You to Color!

By day, Florrie Fox manages Color Me Read bookstore in Georgetown, Washington D.C. By night, she creates her own intricately detailed coloring books for adults, filling the pages with objects that catch her eye. There’s plenty of inspiration in her new apartment—a beautiful carriage house belonging to Professor John Maxwell, Florrie’s boss. He offers the property to Florrie rent-free with one condition—she must move in immediately to prevent his covetous sister and nephew from trying to claim it.

When the professor’s nephew, Delbert, arrives, he proves just as sketchy as Florrie feared. But the following morning, Delbert has vanished. It’s not until she visits the third floor of the store that Florrie makes a tragic discovery—there’s a trap door in the landing, and a dead Delbert inside. The esteemed Professor Maxwell is an obvious suspect, but Florrie is certain this case isn’t so black and white. Doodling clues, she begins to consider other colorful characters on the scene, all with a motive for murder. With a killer drawing closer, Florrie will need to think outside the lines . . . before death makes his mark again.

Digital edition contains a link to the downloadable color-it-yourself cover art!

Dollycas’s Thoughts

What a unique cover idea. Adult coloring books are huge right now. I gave away quite a few to my family for Christmas with sets of colored pencils. This book brings two favorite things together, a fantastic cozy mystery and color-it-yourself cover art.

When you venture beyond the cover you do find a fantastic mystery. We meet Florrie Fox, manager of the Color Me Read bookstore in Georgetown, Washington D.C. The cool thing, she doesn’t just sell adult coloring books in the store, she has also published several herself. Florrie is quite a doodler and the pictures she creates are truly art. Professor John Maxwell owns the store. He is a traveler, his adventures take him all around the world. His office is full of treasures from his travels. He lives on a huge estate with a butler, Mr. DuBois, who runs the household and keep his friend Maxwell on track. There is a guest house on the estate and Professor Maxwell offers the place to Florrie. She is unhappy in her small apartment and Maxwell would rather have her for a tenant than his unsavory nephew Delbert.

Delbert shows up at the bookstore and Florrie dislikes him instantly. She understands why his uncle doesn’t want him around. When she arrives that next day a wrinkle in the carpet catches her attention, she discovers the carpeting in covering a trap door, but when she lifts it she is shocked to find a very dead Delbert. There is no way to color this picture any other way but tragic and gruesome.

I want to shout about this book from the rooftops!

Krista Davis is a great writer, but she has topped herself with this series debut!

The characters are so smart, engaging, witty, charming, interesting and fun. I love them already and want to know them better. Heck, I want to move into Professor Maxwell’s guest house so I can be a part of their lives every day.

I have only visited Washington D.C. once, but with the author’s descriptions of the area and the bookstore, I could transport myself so easily. All the little details were wonderful. I would love to get lost in all the Color Me Read bookstore has to offer.

The plot was rich and flowed at the perfect pace. I found myself so immersed in the story that I realized I didn’t highlight any parts or make any little notes like I do with most books to help me solve the mystery and write my reviews. I sat down and started reading and didn’t put it down until I reached the final word. Well written and well plotted this book has everything I look for in a story and more.

A charming and compelling read with an ending that surprised me. A perfect escape, no this one was a trip to Paradise. It deserves more than 5 stars!

Inn owner Holly Miller finds it ruff staying cheerful over the holidays when the dead body of a beloved businessman turns up in the pet-friendly town of Wagtail, Virginia.

Inspired by her German heritage, Holly’s grandmother has arranged for Wagtail to have a Christkindl Market packed with goodies and decorations for the howliday tourists. But Holly’s mood takes an unseasonable turn when she learns that her old flame and childhood friend Holmes Richardson has brought his fiancée home—and she’ll be staying at the Sugar Maple Inn…

A love triangle becomes the last thing on Holly’s mind when her Jack Russell Trixie’s nose for trouble leads her to the corpse of a pet clothing tycoon. Now Holly and her dedicated detectives—Trixie and Twinkletoes the cat—must sniff out the killer to keep Christmas from going to the dogs…

Delicious recipes for owners and pets included!

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Welcome to Wagtail, Virginia! The perfect escape for dogs, cats, and their persons! That is until one of the Sugar Maple Inn’s guests ends up dead.

The town is celebrating the holidays with a Christkindl Market. Food and gifts can be found in several kiosks around the green. The homes are all decorated too. Some with the usual holiday fare but there is one who has taken the decorations to new heights, including some holiday music.

Christmas has also brought a pet clothing business owner to the inn with his whole family. This also brings Holmes Richardson to town with his fiancée. Holly still has feelings for Holmes but she knows she has to remember the woman is a guest at the inn, so she tries to put a smile on her face and attend to the woman’s needs, no matter how outlandish they are.

To say that the Thackleberry family tree is full of crazy may be putting it mildly. They are a couple of good souls in the bunch but most feel quite entitled due to the family’s wealth. Holmes’ bride to be is by far the worse. When their patriarch is killed it is easy to put them all high on the suspect list.

All my favorite characters have returned including Gingersnap, Twinkletoes, and Trixie. Krista Davis does such a great job of character development, pet or person. They come alive in these pages. The series characters continue to evolve and the guest characters fit into the mix so well. They are all lifelike and easy to like or dislike as the case may be.

Visiting Wagtail at Christmas would be spectacular. They do know how to throw a holiday, even with a dead body. The town tries to not let a murder investigation slow them down. The author has described every setting in such detail that is very easy to imagine you are there.

The plot weaves together a fantastic mystery and an interesting romantic triangle. There are plenty of suspects with a motive that singling out one is very difficult. It was fun chasing down the clues in a little winter wonderland. Holly treads lightly into Holmes relationship with Norma Jean. As his friend, she wants him to be happy, as a woman falling in love with him she wants him to be with her.

If I had a tail it would be wagging. This is an excellent mystery and perfect to curl up with on those wintery, blustery days ahead.

If you are new to the series, start at the beginning and enjoy. The book/series would also make a great gift for the pet-loving reader on your list.

Cozy Wednesday with Krista Davis – Author of Murder Most Howl – #Giveaway too!

cozy wednesday 2013 640

Welcome to Cozy Wednesday!
Murder Most Howl was just released and Krista Davis has a fun way to tell us all about it!

Have you ever participated in a murder mystery weekend? I think it would be so much fun. So when I wrote MURDER MOST HOWL, I brought a murder mystery weekend to Wagtail Mountain.

Holly Miller’s grandmother, Oma, has finally entrusted her with running the Sugar Maple Inn while she takes a much-deserved vacation. Even though they have a full house, it seems like everything should go smoothly.

When an employee unexpectedly quits, and a blizzard blows into town, Holly is determined to make the best of a bad situation. She will prove her competence by handling everything with aplomb. But when an unexpected corpse shows up, no one is sure if it’s part of the game or if someone has really been murdered!

Come spend the weekend at the Sugar Maple Inn with Holly, her Jack Russell, Trixie, and her calico kitty, Twinkletoes, as they unravel the mystery of MURDER MOST HOWL!

This January, Wagtail, Virginia, the top pet-friendly destination in the country, is throwing a fun murder mystery weekend—but no one expected the real thing…

Holly Miller is delighted her grandmother has finally left the Sugar Maple Inn to take a well-deserved vacation. It means Holly’s in charge, but running the inn might be more challenging than she realized. Wagtail’s throwing a weekend-long murder mystery game to draw in tourists during the slow season, the inn has a full house, and a blizzard is on the way.

Trouble is unleashed the night the game begins, when the storm blows in and the lights go out. It gets worse the following morning when Holly’s Jack Russell terrier, Trixie, discovers a body—one that’s actually dead. Now Holly, her calico kitten Twinkletoes, and Trixie must play by the rules and find one dirty dog…

Delicious recipes for owners and pets included!

Dollycas’s Thoughts

If Wagtail Mountain was a real place I would bundle up in my warm winter clothes and head there today! I would check right in at the Sugar Maple Inn with my dogs Oreo and NeraBelle and let the fun begin.

Krista Davis has created an ideal place for pet lovers. A town the welcomes their dogs and cats and caters to them. The restaurants have both pet and people selections on their menus. Stores offer items for animals and the people that love them. Hotels and places like the Sugar Maple Inn have cat and dog wings and allow the 4 legged family members roam and make themselves right at home.

In this 3rd installment the town is hosting the Murder Most Howl Mystery Game where guests try to solve the mystery, like a huge game of Clue. There is a blizzard headed toward Wagtail that could put a little damper on the festivities. Of course, a body found outside the Inn could be a huge game changer too. Holly and her friends know the event is important for the town so they do all the can to keep things running smoothly while they try to solve the real murder mystery too.

The regular characters are joined by some very interesting characters in town for the weekend, including The Thursday Night Cloak and Dagger Book Club and couple wanting to adopt a dog. The Sugar Maple Inn has a program called If The Dog Fits where guests can get to know dogs from the humane society. All the characters, human, canine, and feline, all come to life and leap from the pages.

I really enjoyed this story. The mysteries, real and in the game, were very well thought out and plotted. Both had their share of red herrings, the game more than originally planned. 🙂 I ended up reading the book all in one sitting and was sorry my virtual visit to Wagtail ended so soon. I look forward to returning there soon.

Cozy Wednesday with Krista Davis – Author of The Diva Steals a Chocolate Kiss – Giveaway too!

cozy wednesday 2013 640
Welcome to Cozy Wednesday!
I am so happy to welcome Krista Davis back to Escape With Dollycas today!

Krista Davis author picOne of my favorite characters in THE DIVA STEALS A CHOCOLATE KISS came out of nowhere, pretty much complete. It’s odd but not unusual that characters do that. What’s stranger still is that those characters are often the most fun and interesting.

Nonni Merano came to America as a young woman. She learned English on the fly and opened a chocolate shop with her husband. Now she’s the tiny little matriarch of the Merano family, retired and darling, but don’t cross her!Diva Steals a Chocolate Kiss hi res

She showed up dressed entirely in blue, her white hair neatly pinned up in a bun. Not a speck of makeup touched her face. She walks with the aid of a cane but that doesn’t stop her from cooking up a storm.

When problems of a murderous kind begin to plague the Merano family, Nonni goes to Sophie Winston for help, promising to repay her by teaching her to make Tiramisu Nonni-style. Sophie has trouble saying no to sweet Nonni and soon finds herself knee deep in chocolates and murder.

The recipe for Nonni’s Tiramisu is in THE DIVA STEALS A CHOCOLATE KISS as well as my favorite, Double Chocolate Bourbon Bread Pudding. In fact, there’s a loaf of challah on my kitchen counter right now so I can make it again! Super easy, but watch out because it’s addictive!

The New York Times bestselling author of The Diva Wraps It Up unwraps an all-new tale in which chocolate is the kiss of death…

Domestic Diva Sophie Winston is in charge of the sweetest event in Old Town this summer. Amore Chocolates is celebrating its fiftieth anniversary with a chocolate tasting at the mansion of the company’s CEO, Joe Merano—and Sophie is running the show. With cookies, candy, and five kinds of chocolate cake, it’s a chocolate lover’s dream! But when Joe goes missing, the celebration becomes bittersweet. And when Sophie discovers the body of a competing chocolatier in the guesthouse, the event turns downright deadly.

As if that wasn’t enough, Sophie’s been receiving daily boxes of sweet treats. After ruling out her new beau and her exes, Sophie wonders if someone’s trying to send her a message—and if she’s next on a chocoholic’s hit list…

Includes delicious recipes and entertaining tips!

Dollycas’s Thoughts

I love this series. Sophie and Natasha are just wonderful characters. Sophie is very soothing and handles things in a very sensible way and Natasha seems to have no common sense whatsoever and poor Mars is caught right in the middle. Add a little murder to the mix along with a jealous boyfriend and chocolate and you have a fantastic story

I love the way Krista Davis writes. Her characters are quite a quirky mix, perfect for a cozy mystery.  This time we meet Joe Merano and his family, the owners of Amore’ Chocolates.  They have a very complex history and it may be coming back to haunt them. When Joe goes missing and another man is killed in their guest house Nonni immediately says the family is cursed. Well Sophie is on the case and she hopes to find Joe and a killer too.

Nonni is my favorite character this time. She is a very strong, wise and opinionated woman who keeps her family on their toes.

Davis gives us a story with many twists and spins. She drops the clues with the hand of a master leading the reader at a perfect pace. The antics of Natasha will have you laughing out loud and feeling for Mars as he deals with her outlandish ideas. Thankfully Sophie is there to help but Alex doesn’t like it one bit.  We are also treated by tips from Sophie and Natasha at the start of each chapter. These bring a few giggles too.

Don’t forget the chocolate, you will be craving it from the first page to the last so be sure to stock up. Krista is nice enough to include a few recipes, Nonni’s Tiramisu and Double Chocolate Bourbon Bread Pudding are just 2 I would love to try.

I highly recommend this book and all the others in this series. Grab it today and enjoy!
