The Scent of Murder: A Mystery (A Jazz Ramsey Mystery)

Brand New Series
Setting – Ohio

First in a new series from national bestselling author Kylie Logan, The Scent of Murder is a riveting mystery following Jazz Ramsey as she trains cadaver dogs.

The way Jazz Ramsey figures it, life is pretty good. She’s thirty-five years old and owns her own home in one of Cleveland’s most diverse, artsy, and interesting neighborhoods. She has a job she likes as an administrative assistant at an all-girls school, and a volunteer interest she’s passionate about—Jazz is a cadaver dog handler.

Jazz is working with Luther, a cadaver dog in training. Luther is still learning cadaver work, so Jazz is putting him through his paces at an abandoned building that will soon be turned into pricey condos. When Luther signals a find, Jazz is stunned to see the body of a young woman who is dressed in black and wearing the kind of make-up and jewelry that Jazz used to see on the Goth kids back in high school.

She’s even more shocked when she realizes that beneath the tattoos and the piercings and all that pale make up is a familiar face.

The lead detective on the case is an old lover, and the murdered woman is an old student. Jazz finds herself sucked into the case, obsessed with learning the truth.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

What a great start for this series by Kylie Logan!

Jazz Ramsey trains cadaver dogs and works at St. Catherine’s Preparatory Academy, an all-girls school as an administrative assistant. Her two worlds collide when she finds the body of a former student while putting a dog through its paces. The tragic find also brings former lover, Detective Nick Kolesov back into her life. Pulled in many different directions Jazz needs to find the truth.  What was Florie Allen involved in? and who thought killing her was the answer?

I liked Jazz Ramsey right away. She is smart, thoughtful and driven whether working at the school, training dogs, or searching for a killer. Best friend, Sarah Carrington, is an art teacher at the school and a great sounding board for Jazz, both in her investigation and in life. She knows what happened between Jazz and Nick and tries to steer Jazz through the fire of dealing with him again. Detective Nick is not over Jazz at all, he wants to be around her but he doesn’t want her digging into his case. These characters are very well developed for the first book in the series but the author has left plenty of room for growth.

Ms. Logan’s writing style is descriptive and informative. I am not familiar with Cleveland but her words pulled me there and I was able to visualize and get the feeling of each setting from St. Catherine’s to the dilapidated building where the body was found, the new school Florie was attending and even the office of a group Florie was working for. The descriptions were also clear for the characters. I envisioned every one clearly. They were distinct and believable.

The mystery was very entertaining but I was able to focus and pull out the killer well before Jazz or Nick. A set of clues were found in an interesting and unexpected way, but I was already on the “scent” of the correct person.  Complex mysteries are hard to have in the first book of a series because the author has a huge lift by introducing the characters, some of the back history, and all their connections along with setting the time and place. She did an excellent job of this.

I really enjoyed the training for cadaver dogs. I wish there had been a few more sessions between the dog Jazz was currently working with, Luther. Hopefully, there will be more in future books.

I absolutely loved the ending and can’t wait for book two of this series.

Welcome to Cozy Wednesday!
I am delighted to welcome Kylie Logan back to Escape with Dollycas!

Guest Post | ITALIAN ICED by Kylie Logan
(Provided by Publicist)

Writing cozy mysteries is a funny thing.

After all, I’ve been told by numerous readers that they come back to a mystery series book after book because they love the world the author creates.  Whether it’s a sweet little button shop in Chicago (like in my Button Box mysteries) or the idyllic island in Lake Erie where my League of Literary Ladies live, there is something about the people and the setting and the atmosphere an author creates that often appeals to readers even more than the mystery.

But, aha!  That last word in the above sentence is the key.

Mystery.

It’s tricky.  We create these great characters and often, they’re friends or family of our main character, people she loves and people she deals with every day.   And as authors, we grow to love these people, too.

And then we have to make bad things happen to them.

Sigh.

It’s true, every single time and with every single book.  If it wasn’t, there would be no story.

In my Ethnic Eats mysteries, it takes a bit for my heroine, Laurel Inwood, to warm up to her cozy family.  Laurel grew up in the foster system and she doesn’t trust easily.  When she finds herself out of a job (she was the private chef of a Hollywood super-star) and in Hubbard, Ohio with her foster’s mother’s sister, Sophie, she’s got a whole new world to get used to.  Trust me, she settles in eventually, even after she meets handsome, maddening, enticing Declan Fury and his huge Irish family.

And then I make terrible things happen to these really nice people.

In book #1 of the series, “Irish Stewed,” a local investigative TV reporter is killed at the restaurant Sophie owns.  In book #2, “French Fried,” the victim is a beloved neighbor.  And now in book #3, “Italian Iced,” Laurel’s old Hollywood crowd shows up.  Obviously, one of them is bound to end up dead!

Through it all–the egotistical Italian race car driver, the twit of an assistant, the teen with a chip on his shoulder–Laurel knows she’s got friends to stand by her side.

And that, I think, is the real appeal of the cozy.  These characters we know and love will come through it all, and there’s always a happily ever after waiting for them on the other side.

~Kylie

Thank you so much, Kylie, for visiting today!

Hot pasta and a cold corpse make for quite a combination in the latest book in the Ethnic Eats mystery series.

When Laurel Inwood features Italian cuisine on the Terminal at the Tracks menu, she knows she’ll need to stock the shelves, the fridge, and the freezer with plenty of wonderful delicacies. She just never expected one of them to be her former employer, Hollywood superstar Meghan Cohan.

And one day, when Laurel is at the restaurant early to get ready for the regular rush of customers, that’s exactly what she finds–Meghan dead in the Terminal freezer.

What’s a Hollywood A-lister doing in Hubbard, Ohio?

For Laurel, that’s the real question, because the first question she’d ask in any other murder investigation–who would want the victim dead?–seems pretty much a no-brainer in this case.

Who would want Meghan dead?

Just about anybody who had ever met her.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

I really love this series. Growing up in a family that owned and operated a restaurant much like the Terminal at the Tracks before Laurel arrived I know the author’s depiction of how hard it is to keep an eatery open with enough customers to turn a profit is true. My mother sold the restaurant not long after my father passed and no one else has been able to take it over and replicate the success she had. I love Laurel’s idea of a different type of cuisine every month while still keeping customer favorite’s on the menu. It keeps the menu fresh and fun both for the customers and the cooks.

By this third book in the series, Laurel has decided to stay in Hubbard and Sophia is back to work. A new waitress adds a bit of drama, but the staff works together like a well-oiled machine. The characters this author has created are so realistic. I feel like I could take a little trip to Ohio and walk right into the Terminal at the Tracks. The dialogue rings true. The relationships have developed naturally. This cast has worked their way right into my heart.

The idea of Hollywood superstar Meghan Cohan, Laurel’s former employer showing up in Hubbard would never have crossed my mind. I was totally surprised at how she made her appearance. To have her be the victim brought a wonderful new group of characters to the story. Her assistant, her son, her ex-husband and more. So many likely suspects all with the motive to cause her icy demise.

Ms. Logan plotted this story out with knife-like precision. Twists and turns with a real mystery not only of “whodunit” but why they “dunit”. Laurel has a heck of a time figuring this one out even after she ends up out cold and headed to the hospital. I was totally in the dark until the very end. I love the way all the suspects were brought together for the grand reveal.

I did enjoy how the events in the story allowed Laurel to look back at her life in California and even back to being a foster child. This made it possible to really open herself up to opportunities that were staring her right in the face.

This is an excellent addition to this series. The way the final pages are written I am sad to say I think this is the last book in this series which really upsets me. These are characters I am not ready to say goodbye to and there are so many more countries to visit for ethnic eats. I really hope I am wrong.

I highly recommend all three books in this series!

Poison’s on the menu in the second book in the national bestselling Ethnic Eats series featuring Laurel Inwood and the quirky residents of Hubbard, Ohio.

The Statue of Liberty is 130 years old, and for the struggling residents of Hubbard, Ohio, any opportunity to bring in tourists is reason enough for a celebration. Laurel Inwood and her aunt, Sophie, are pitching in. Sophie’s Terminal at the Tracks, a former greasy spoon turned charming ethnic eatery, will be offering French cuisine for the entire week.

For expert help with their quiche and escargot, the ladies turn to Raquel “Rocky” Arnaud, a former French chef and friend of Sophie. What looks like a match made in heaven turns rank as quickly as buttermilk on a summer’s day. Rocky turns up dead and when her nightly red wine shows notes of oak, cinnamon, and poison, Laurel turns from soufflé to sleuth.

INCLUDES A RECIPE

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Laurel Inwood has stayed in Ohio even though her Aunt Sophie is back to work. She has applied for a job as a private chef and hopes it will be her ticket out of town. Until then, Hubbard is celebrating the Statue of Liberty in its quest to bring more tourists to town and Sophie’s Terminal at the Tracks is serving up French cuisine. Sophie’s friend, a former French chef, Raquel “Rocky” Arnaud has shared some recipes and herbs from her garden to make the dishes as authentic as possible.

The city celebration also includes a parade, a signing by a French author, fireworks, and a Statue of Liberty expert will be speaking at the library. Rocky was excited to attend all the events, but she caused a scene at the bookstore and left the parade early. Then she failed to show up for the fireworks. Laurel and Declan are worried about her and with good cause. When they arrive at her little farm, Pacifique (Peaceful), there is loud music playing and Rocky dead in a chair with an open bottle of wine and an empty wine glass on the table next to her. The police arrive and as soon as poisoning is confirmed they decide it was a case of suicide. Both Laurel and Sophie know that can’t be the case. Declan in his efforts to protect Laurel attaches himself to her rogue investigation to prove Rocky was murdered and get Rocky the justice she deserves.

Oh, Kylie Logan has cooked us readers up a delicious story!!

I love the setting of Sophie’s restaurant and Declan’s store nearby. The unique little traintown is doing all it can to bring in business. Celebrating the 130th birthday of the Statue of Liberty, sure why not. It sets of the French theme of this installment of the series perfectly.

The characters are continuing to develop. It was wonderful to see Sophie’s improvement but that gives Laurel the boost to move on. Her coming to help Sophie is just a temporary arrangement. That is why she has worked to keep Declan at arm’s length. But Declan has other ideas. I love the way his whole family supports him in his pursuit of Laurel, even though she isn’t the Irish woman he claims to be looking for.

As for the mystery, it was so well written. I was totally floored when the actual killer was revealed. There were a few red herrings thrown into the pot that really changed things up. Even when Laurel started to really get a “picture” of the killer and revealed it out loud, I was like, “no, that can’t be right”. Then after the reveal, there was another little twist that again rocked me to my core, a shiver went right up my spine.

I so enjoyed the way the entire story flowed. The subplots melded nicely with the mystery and there were some surprises there too. Ms. Logan knows how to keep our attention for all 300+ pages and leaves us more than ready to rush into the next installment of this series. I am so excited to read Italian Iced! It will be released next week.

After flopping as a personal chef to a Hollywood movie star, jobless Laurel Inwood finds herself humbled in Hubbard, Ohio, helping her aunt Sophie run her restaurant. Much to Laurel’s dismay, Sophie’s Terminal at the Tracks is not the cozy bistro her aunt would have had her believe—it’s a run-down greasy spoon in an old railroad station. To save the dingy diner, Laurel cooks up a plan to feature alternating ethnic cuisine as specials.

But first, there’s the problem of the body in the booth. Slumped over a table with a receipt spike in his back is Jack Lancer—“the Lance of Justice”—an investigative reporter for local TV news. Assisted by the drop-dead gorgeous owner of the neighboring Irish store—who may or may not be a suspect—Laurel sets out to track down a killer who had no reservations about impaling a newshound. But as she turns up the heat, will she end up in the soup herself?

INCLUDES RECIPES

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Laurel Inwood arrives in Hubbard, Ohio to find two surprises.

  1. Her aunt Sophie’s restaurant is in nowhere close to what she expected – more greasy spoon – less cozy bistro cafe.
  2.  There is a dead body in a booth with a receipt spike stuck in his back.

What can Laurel do? her “aunt” is having surgery tomorrow and needs Laurel to run the restaurant. Maybe she can make a few “minor” changes. . . but how will business really be after someone was murdered there? She has a prime suspect in mind but can that handsome man really be a murderer. He also wants to help her track down the killer. She doesn’t trust him but he knows the residents of Hubbard better than she does. She may need the Luck of the Irish to get her out of this mess. Save the restaurant and find the killer . . . maybe Hollywood wasn’t that bad.

Reading this book was a delightful way to spend my Saturday. It brought back memories of my mother’s restaurant and the one she worked at while I was growing up. The later was called “the greasy spoon” by everyone. It is always hard to keep businesses like this thriving especially today with so many options. I loved Laurel’s idea and loved that she started her ethic eats concept with Irish comfort foods.

Laurel is smart and can cook virtually anything. She is given a recipe for Irish Stew and she takes it and runs with it. Her upbringing as a foster child gives her an interesting way to look at life and the relationships she makes. Laurel holds nothing back when she confronts her aunt about her deception about Sophie’s Terminal at the Tracks and that she may not be sticking around. She is a tough cookie on the outside and in this first story in this series, just a little bit of the softer inside begins to show. There is a potential for a lot of character growth and I want to get to know her better and Sophia too.

Laurel’s relationship with Declan, the hunky manager of The Irish Shop, is pretty complex. There is romantic tension, but she doesn’t trust him, and their arguments were very couple-ish. He also has a wonderful family that accepted Laurel immediately.

The man who was murdered Jack Lancer—“the Lance of Justice” was a local reporter that appeared to be loved by everyone, until Laural started really digging into his life and the stories he featured. I really enjoyed this way this progressed throughout the book. There were so many surprises in addition to a few twists that kept my eyes riveted to the page.

This series is off to a terrific start. Well-written, nicely plotted and characters I want to know better. I am looking forward to reading French Fried soon.

Welcome to Cozy Wednesday!
I am so excited to have Kylie Logan drop in for a visit!

“Gone with the Twins”
(Post provided by publicist.)

Each new mystery I write is an adventure.  Some books start with the germ of an idea planted by something I read about or see on TV.  Other books comes to life thanks to an interesting person I meet, a snatch of conversation I overhear, or some nugget of history or legend that niggles at my brain, demanding its own story.

But when it comes to my League of Literary Ladies mysteries, the creative process works a little differently.  That’s because of the basic concept of the series–four warring neighbors on an island in Lake Erie keep taking each other to court and the magistrate gets tired of dealing with their petty problems.  He tells them that if only they’d talk to each other, maybe they’d learn to get along, and to get them to do that, he sentences them to be a book discussion group.  That was Square One when it came to the Literary Ladies.  Square Two?  I decided each of their adventures would be based on the classic book they’re reading.

What that means, of course, is that I can’t depend on things like an overheard conversation or an interesting news article to start the creative juices flowing.  For each book, I have to start with classic books, and I have to find books with plots that I can twist and turn to turn into the elements of each mystery.

The next step in the process, though is seems easier, is really the kicker–not only do I need classic plots, I need recognizable titles that can be tweaked–just a tad–to make them appropriate for the mystery genre.

So far, the two elements have meshed pretty well.  Book #1 was “Mayhem at the Orient Express.”  It was followed by “A Tale of Two Biddies,” “The Legend of Sleepy Harlow,” and “And Then There Were Nuns.”  When I had a chance to write a fifth book in series, I had to get back to work with a snappy title in mind.

I can’t remember the titles I thought of and rejected.  I do know that when I came up with  “Gone With the Twins,” I knew I’d hit paydirt.  The title is instantly familiar, and there’s enough fodder in the Margaret Mitchell classic that it allowed me to let my imagination go wild.

I kept my South Bass Island setting, of course, because the Ladies of the League wouldn’t be the same if they weren’t dealing with the joys and frustrations of island life.  Then I allowed myself to play with Mitchell’s elements:

We’ve got two warring bed and breakfast inns, one on the north side of the island and one on the south.

We’ve got a Civil War gala, a Lady of the League who’s gone ga-ga over the antebellum south, and of course, the Twins, children of a Hollywood superstar who were once kidnapped and became household names because of their miraculous escape and are now turning the island on its head.

Add to that local vixen Vivien Frisk, the object of every guys’ affection who can fiddle-dee-dee and bat her eyelashes with the best of them, and you can see where this is going.

For the League’s leading Lady, Bea Cartwright, it’s headed straight for trouble.  Especially when Vivien is found dead and Bea discovers that everybody’s favorite island belle had more enemies than you can shake a stick at.

Frankly, my dear, I hope you join me on South Bass Island for the latest adventure of the League of Literary Ladies!

The League of Literary Ladies is currently enjoying Margaret Mitchell’s saga of the South, Gone with the Wind. But there’s one situation on South Bass Island that they wish would simply blow over.

Kidnapped as teenagers, the children of a famous movie star are now media darlings after a miraculous escape. What’s next for the celebrity twins? They’re opening an over-the-top B and B called Tara on South Bass Island, and frankly, they don’t give a damn about the competition—including Bea Cartwright’s own beloved inn.

The other members of the League—Chandra, Kate, and Luella—are turning scarlet. But when local realtor Vivian Frisk is found murdered, and the suspects include Chandra, who lost her beau to the frisky Vivian, the Ladies rally to her defense. They may have to skim a few chapters of the Civil War soap opera and focus on bringing justice to the island they call home…

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Riva and Quentin Champion were kidnapped as teenagers and now that they have escaped they decide to start over by opening a Gone with the Wind themed B&B that just might force Bea out of business.  Chandra also chooses that The League of Literary Ladies read Gone with the Wind as their next book club selection. So as the town get ready to celebrate the B & B’s opening with a Civil War gala, Bea is more concerned with getting customers for her own establishment. Until a local realtor is murdered and Chandra doesn’t have an alibi. She did have a bumpy history with the home seller. She also isn’t helping her case by talking to her friends about where she was and what she was doing at the time of the murder. Bea decides to put her problems aside to try and help prove her friend’s innocence.

These ladies have come a long way since the judge ordered them to start their book club. They now really have each other’s backs. Yes, they still have some minor skirmishes but really have grown to care about each other.

In this story the twins, Riva and Quentin Champion, are building their lives off the fame they have received since they escaped their kidnapper. In addition to the B & B. They are meeting with a producer about a movie. They also will do anything to get what they want, whether it comes to customers, furnishings for the inn, and even taking over town committees.  Chandra is hiding something from the other ladies and that is putting her in the hot seat. Bea and Levi are still sorting out their relationship.  Kate and Luella are available to their friends for anything the need but take a less prominent role this time.

Kylie Logan brings this set of eclectic characters together is a very fast paced story. I read the whole book in an afternoon. I just couldn’t put it down. The mystery was not as complex as previous installments but had plenty of twists and surprises. Another death plays into the main plot but this death takes place before the story begins. I don’t think this character was mentioned in previous books so we really didn’t get to meet her before her death but this is a minor point. While I had an inkling about the murderer I needed to follow behind Bea right to the end to answer all my questions.

I did enjoy the Gone with the Wind theme for this story. In fact, I love that each story ties into a literary classic.

This author always gives the reader an entertaining story to escape into. Mayhem and mystery, with humor and romance. I found this story to be a very enjoyable getaway. I wonder what she has dreamed up for The League of Literary Ladies next.

The national bestselling author of The Legend of Sleepy Harlow returns to South Bass Island, where the League of Literary Ladies has to find out who’s killing off nuns.

B and B owner Bea Cartwright has taken on the responsibility of taking meals to ten visiting nuns, who are on retreat at the Water’s Edge Center for Spirit and Renewal on picturesque South Bass Island on Lake Erie. But the peace of the retreat is shattered when one of the nuns is found at the water’s edge—murdered. And when a second nun is killed, Bea and the other members of the League of Literary Ladies—Chandra, Kate, and Luella—start to wonder about eerie parallels with the Agatha Christie mystery classic, And Then There Were None.

Since Bea has the trust of the sisters, the local chief of police asks her and the other Literary Ladies to interview each of them. Expecting a confession may be asking for a miracle, but Bea hopes she can at least find the killer before another nun gets crossed off the guest list…

Dollycas’s Thoughts

It has been almost a year since the Ladies were court ordered to form a book club. The League of Literary Ladies quickly turned into more than a book club and even with all their differences these women have managed to become good friends. In this installment Bea has been asked to provide meals for 10 nuns who have come to South Bass Island for a retreat.  Chandra, Kate, and Luella are pitching in to help. They also want to get inside the Water’s Edge Center and see what is behind the gates of a place the used to be off limits. When one of the nuns is murdered shortly after the retreat starts and another dies in quick succession the place becomes anything but restful. Now with only eight nuns the Ladies start to think about the similarities to Agatha Christie’s And Then There Were None. They are hoping the similarities have ended but they again “assist” the police is catching the killer just to be sure.

This is my favorite book in the series so far. I love the ladies and they sure do land themselves in the middle of one murder after another. Don’t think the other residents of South Bass haven’t noticed. This time the author adds a very diverse group of nuns to the mix and brought us a super mystery. That may seem like a lot of characters but they are each unique and easy to keep track of We also lose two of them in the early chapters.

The story really does parallel the Christie classic in so many ways, but whether a Christie fan or not, you will totally enjoy this book. Logan liberally spreads the twists and turns throughout and truthfully I figured it out at the same time as Bea. Excellent writing!

I also loved the setting. A grand place with several suites overlooking the water. All the renovations have not yet been completed but will be soon. It would be a lovely place to spend a week or two.

The subplot with Chandra’s major plans for her yard, swimming pool and a huge lamppost added a whole element I didn’t expect but totally understood as this part of the story played out. She really was pushing the other’s buttons and I was surprised by how long it took for one of them to let her have it.

Fun, entertaining, a great way to spend an afternoon. I hope this is not our last visit to South Bass Island. I really want to solve another mystery with the League of Literary Ladies Book Club.

The author of Death by Devil’s Breath takes the chili cook-off circuit to southern Texas to prove that revenge is a dish best served hot . . .

Everyone in San Antonio remembers the Alamo, but how many remember the Chili Queens? Back in the early twentieth century, these spicy señoras sold their lip-smacking chili in plazas all around the city. Now, as part of the Chili Showdown, Maxie and her half-sister, Sylvia, are dressing up as the Chili Queens to raise money for charity.

But someone wasn’t feeling too charitable toward a local troubadour, who is murdered at the fundraiser. When their friend Nick Falcone, head of security for the Showdown, actually becomes the prime suspect, it’s up to Maxie and Sylvia to turn the heat up on a killer, who’s planning a chili reception for them . . .

INCLUDES DELICIOUS RECIPES!

Dollycas’s Thoughts

The Chili Showdown rolls into Texas and pays tribute to the Chili Queens of San Antonio by serving chili at a fundraiser for a week at the Alamo in addition to their festivities at the fair grounds. You will only find the Chili Chick at the fairgrounds. For the charity event they dress a little more old fashioned. They are also serving a different type of chili each night and they are joined by several other groups serving their versions of the dish including a company that sells chili IN A CAN!! The girls just can’t believe it.

Of course where the Showdown goes trouble usually follows and soon Maxie finds a body. A strolling “hot” guitar player had strummed his last string. When the man is identified we learn the he and the Showdown’s head of security, Nick, have crossed paths. He may even be the police’s prime suspect. No beans about it Maxie is hot on the trail and she is burning up trying to find the real killer,

I love this series! Maxie is smart, savvy and her temperament is spicy. You never know where her little investigations are going to take her. Sylvia holds down the fort while Maxie is either dancing up a storm as the Chili Chick or dancing around the countryside following a lead. But she doesn’t do it out of the goodness of her heart, she is sure to have a snarky comment of two whenever Maxie returns. They are only half-sisters and running their dad’s business, Jack Pierce’s Hot-Cha Chili Seasoning Palace, together since he has disappeared without a trace, means they have to put up with each other.

Kylie Logan has served up yet another marvelous cozy mystery. She has given us plenty of unique characters, several who are viable suspects, and put them in a fantastic place.  She spices up the story with a dash of romance and a dollop of humor. This one moved right along and has a couple of surprising moments they will make the pages fly faster and faster. It is a hot, hot, hot one and I highly recommend you dish up a copy as soon as you can.

It takes more than a lurid legend to scare off the League of Literary Ladies…

For Halloween, the Literary Ladies have chosen to read Washington Irving’s spooky classic, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, with its infamous headless horseman. But South Bass Island has its own headless legend—of a Prohibition bootlegger named Charlie “Sleepy” Harlow. Decapitated by rival rumrunners, Harlow appears once a year in spectral form to search for his noggin.

This October, the Elkhart Ghost Getters (EGG) have returned to the island. The group claims that they have film footage of Harlow’s ghost, and are determined to get more. They’re staying at Bea Cartwright’s B and B, but it’s Kate Wilder who isn’t happy to see them after they trashed her winery last year. When the EGG leader turns up dead, Kate becomes the prime suspect, and the other League members need to scramble to crack the case.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

That darn Jerry Garcia, Chandra’s cat, would be on his 9th life if he lived around me –  but he does give this story quite a start.

That is until the  EGG (Elkhart Ghost Getters) show up with all their ghost busting and filming equipment. That is when we find out about The Legend of Sleepy Harlow. We also find out this is NOT the EGG’s first visit to South Bass Island and everyone is not happy about their return. In fact Kate is screaming mad they are back in town but would she really kill one of them?

I have read The Legend of Sleepy Hollow several times. The story by Washington Irving is a classic and a very fast read. Logan’s story took that and combined it with the Ghostbusters and Ghost Hunters of movies and television respectively. I am not as familiar with the Ghost Hunting series but the equipment immediately made me think of the things Egon created in Ghostbusters.  All mixed together it made for a very exciting and entertaining read.

Of course I love these Literary Ladies. They have their hands full with this adventure especially when one of their friends is off having surgery and another has a special project thanks to Jerry Garcia. Luella is also doing everything she can to push Bea and Levi together. Bea takes the lead on the investigation and is doing everything she can to find suspects besides Kate but those alibis keep tripping her up. I had a thought of who it could be but that final twist made everything fall right into place.

Kylie Logan writes such fun mysteries and she creates such vibrant characters. She also puts then in some scary situations. Snakes, Kylie, I could have done without the snakes, but there were right where you would expect them to be so I shouldn’t have been surprised. It just sent extra chills up my back for just a few moments. 🙂

Kylie Logan has done it again. This is a fabulous mystery and perfect for your Halloween reading! This story does read well as a stand alone too but you really need to read them all and meet these ladies from the start, back when they couldn’t stand each other. This is an excellent cozy series!

Cold-blooded murder can be hot as hell…

In Las Vegas, the stakes are high—and so is the Scoville scale. Maxie Pierce and the Chili Showdown are in town for a very heated contest devoted to judging the legendary and notorious-for-being-self-combustible Devil’s Breath chili. The guest judges are casino performers with a taste for chili and an eye for publicity.

Maxie is already going mad organizing the event, dealing with her snide half sister, Sylvia, and trying to figure out her hothead of security, Nick. But when a local hack comedian drops dead in the middle of the Showdown, it isn’t the spicy dish—it’s poison. And Maxie is going to have to shuffle through a full deck of suspects to pick out the culprit.

INCLUDES DELICIOUS RECIPES!

Dollycas’s Thoughts

What happens in Vegas may stay in Vegas but this Chili Showdown almost gave Maxie more than even she could handle. She even gets a blast from her past!

Maxie is a smart protag with just the right amount of spice.  She and her half sister Sylvia are supposed to be running their dad’s business, Jack Pierce’s Hot-Cha Chili Seasoning Palace, together since he has disappeared without a trace, but it is not going well. The Showdown has been assigned to the Deadeye, a Western town set up in a section in the hotel/casino. Their booth assignment happens to be the bordello, well it is the “biggest” and “nicest” place in Deadeye but Sylvia is not amused at all.  She is also not happy by all the things keeping Maxie from working at the booth. Besides trying to find a killer she keep having costume issues and the Chili Chick is not doing much dancing.

Logan has not only taken us to Las Vegas she has introduced us to some of the performing “headliners” at the Casino. Sadly one of them dies and the mystery begins. These people are not all who they appear to be and have some secrets needed in a story like this. They are all vying to assist in breaking a world’s record as Reverend Linda Love officiates the largest mass wedding ever to be performed on a Sunday afternoon in Nevada at a Western themed hotel.

Kylie Logan writes such great stories. I am excited every time I hear about a new one coming out. Death by Devil’s Breath is just so funny. Don’t get me wrong, the mystery is very well plotted and the characters and settings are fantastic, but I have some pictures in my head of Maxie in the Chili Chick costume that will be with me forever. I have not laughed this much while reading a book in a long time.
