cozy wednesday 2013 640

Welcome to Cozy Wednesday!!

I am excited to tell you about Linda’s new series as part of her Great Escapes Book Tour!

Why a Barkery?

by Linda O. Johnston

linda o johnstonMy new Barkery & Biscuits Mystery series has now started.  The first book is Bite the Biscuit, and it was released in early May.

In the series, protagonist Carrie Kennersly is a veterinary technician who also gets to realize her dream of becoming an entrepreneur.  Her good friend Brenda Anesco has to sell her bakery, Icing on the Cake, and move away because her mother is ill.  Carrie buys it from her and converts half of Icing into Barkery and Biscuits, a store that sells handmade dog treats made from healthy recipes Carrie developed for patients as a vet tech.

Lots of people enjoy cozy mysteries where the background theme involves cooking and food.  People also enjoy cozies that focus on animals.  I’m hoping that people have fun with my Barkery & Biscuits Mysteries, which have both.

When I first came up with the hint of an idea for this series a couple of years ago, I was aware that there was an emerging industry of small shops that catered to home-cooked meals and treats for pets but it wasn’t very popular–then.

23364540Now it’s a different story.  In my area of Los Angeles, for example, such kinds of stores, often chain stores, keep opening.  In some, the employees are the cooks and bakers as well as sales help, using stoves and ovens and more to create the foods right there.  In others, the employees sell to customers boxes, bags and other containers of food and treats that are made locally with the best of ingredients and then sent to stores for sale.

I buy samples most places I visit.  But I’m limited on what I get and give to our dogs, Lexie and Mystie.  They both have health issues.  Mystie is on prescription dog food and Lexie has a somewhat limited diet.  Yes, I understand that the kinds of healthy things that these stores sell and that Carrie comes up with might be good for both of them.  But they’re each doing okay in their own ways and I’m concerned about rocking that particular boat.  So, I don’t intend to change their diets now.

I don’t even mention the possibility of such amazing diets to Lexie and Mystie.  They already give me enough orders that involve providing them treats I know are okay for them.  And also don’t tell Mystie, but Lexie sometimes does get fun new treats from some of those stores,  as long as they’re limited in number and content.

In the meantime, Carrie’s dog Biscuit gets to hang out in the Barkery and sample all the wonderful dog treats.  I hope she doesn’t tell Lexie and Mystie, either.

And it’s certainly fun to write about the Barkery.  I hope you enjoy reading about it!

~Linda

Carrie Kennersly, a veterinary technician, has become known for offering healthy and popular dog treats at the clinic where she works. When the local bakery’s owner moves away, Carrie jumps at the chance to convert it into the Barkery, a shop to make and sell her canine delights.

But Myra Ethman, co-owner of another pet product store, hates the new competition. At the Barkery’s opening party, she badmouths Carrie’s homemade dog biscuits, insisting she’ll find a way to shut the place down. So when Myra is found dead with a Barkery biscuit beside her, Carrie must prove she didn’t do it before she’s collared for murder.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Linda O. Johnston loves her pets and that truly shines through in her writing. In Bite the Biscuit she introduces us to Carrie Kennersly who has so much energy it is absolutely amazing. She works at a local veterinary clinic as a tech and has just bought a local bakery and added on to include a “barkery” where she bakes and sells yummy treats for dogs. Her own dog, Biscuit, goes almost everywhere with her. She is at her shop by 5 a.m. each morning baking and her day continues on in her store until it is time for her to work at the clinic and then she goes back to close up her shop. She did inherit 2 assistants when she purchased the bakery but she enjoys doing both things and plans to continue that as long as she can.

Her grand reopening is all set and people are showing up in droves, including the owners of a local pet supply store, her closest competition. Myra Ethman owns the store with her husband and she doesn’t make a quiet entrance. She is bad mouthing Carrie’s treats to everyone and threatening to put the new barkery out of business. She and Carrie exchange a few heated words but Carrie is not about to let one cranky customer ruin her day. But it does ruin the next day and week when Myra is found dead and the police are trying to find enough evidence to collar Carrie for the crime. So now Carrie’s busy days also have to include time for snooping, sleuthing and solving the mystery of who made Myra Bite the Biscuit .

This was a fun story with some very entertaining characters both 2 and 4 legged. We not only meet Carrie and her store clerks, we also meet her brother, Neal, Dr. Arvus Kline, the vet that helped Carrie buy her bakery/barkery, and Dr. Reed Storme and his dog Hugo, plus many more.

The mystery was very well written as well. Myra wasn’t the most liked woman around town so there were plenary of suspects. I saw where the story was headed  and was still surprised by the way things actually played out in the end.

The author also includes some doggy treat recipe in the back of the book too.

This is a great start for this new series!

Superstitions Forever!

Are you superstitious? My fingers are crossed that you are!

On the other hand, you don’t have to be superstitious to read my new Superstition Mystery series. In fact, its protagonist Rory Chasen is more skeptical than superstitious.

lost under a ladderThe thing is, Rory is trying to find out the reality of superstitions–because it’s important to her to learn whether the reason her beloved fiancé Warren died was because he walked under a ladder. Did that cause the car to hit him a couple of minutes later? She doesn’t know. She wants to learn, though, because that may be the only way she gets closure.

Rory’s good friend Gemma, a librarian, helps her to start researching superstitions–and encourages Rory to visit Destiny, California, a town that is all about superstitions. Maybe she can find answers there.

But at first Rory finds more questions than answers. She brings her adorable black and white dog Pluckie along, and soon after they arrive Pluckie helps to save the life of Martha Jallopia, a senior woman who has collapsed in the back of the Lucky Dog Boutique. Martha, taking a look at Pluckie, knows she’s going to be just fine, since seeing a black and white dog is lucky, especially if someone is on her way to a business meeting.

Is that destiny? Rory is the assistant manager of a pet store back home, and Martha wants her to stay and run the Lucky Dog. And, because this is a mystery series, Rory agrees.

So why did I start writing the Superstition Mysteries? Am I really superstitious?

Well, what constitutes a really superstitious person? Do I knock on wood? Yes. Do I cross my fingers? Yes. Do I pick up heads-up pennies if I happen to see them on the ground? Yes. Do I walk under ladders? No.

But do I expect the end of the world to occur if I do the wrong thing in the world of superstitions? No. Or at least I didn’t. Now that I’m writing the Superstition Mysteries, I’m much more conscious of superstitions, whether or not they’re likely to come true.

So how about you? Are you willing to take a chance on the Superstition Mysteries? I’ve been telling people it’s good luck to read them. Can I guarantee it? No, but I’m certainly sending good luck wishes to everyone who reads them.

And knocking on wood that they enjoy them and come back for more!

~Linda

Is it Luck? Or is it Destiny?

Rory Chasen never thought superstitions were real—until her beloved fiancé is killed after walking under a ladder. To find closure and the truth about superstitions, Rory takes her dog Pluckie to a town called Destiny, where superstitious beliefs are a way of life.

Rory’s visit to Destiny takes an unexpected turn when Pluckie saves Martha, the owner of the Lucky Dog Boutique. While Martha recovers, Rory reluctantly agrees to manage the pet shop for her. But when Martha becomes the prime suspect in the local bookshop owner’s murder, Rory can’t believe that the sweet old woman would do it. Convinced the real killer is still roaming Destiny’s streets, Rory resolves to crack the case before Martha’s luck runs out.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

I admit it, I am a bit superstitious. Cross my fingers, knock on wood, and I would never walk under a ladder.

The town of Destiny, California is all about superstitions with the Broken Mirror Bookstore, Wish Upon A Star Children’s Shop, Lucky Dog Boutique and more but the town still has it’s share of skeptics. Police chief Justin Halbertson calls himself a superstition “agnostic” but don’t let  his boss the mayor hear that. The mayor, Bevin Dermot, represents his town and all the superstitious beliefs to the hilt, even dressing in clothes that make him look very leprechaun-ish.

Rory Chasen and her dog Pluckie have come to town to get some answers so that she can get her life back on track but from the start her trip doesn’t go as planned.  She meets Martha and because of the “good luck” that a black and white dog brings they become fast friends. Rory has a big heart and finds she can’t say no to Martha’s request.

The premise of this story seems pretty unique. I had never heard of a town like Destiny and never had heard that black and white dogs are good luck. I have a black and white dog that I love but I don’t think she has ever given us good luck for a business meeting or in any other way but she she is great to cuddle with while I read or keep my feet warm as I type.

We meet some very interesting characters, like the bookshop owners, the one who died had written a type of guidebook to superstitions. The mayor is a bit quirky too but most of the other characters seem pretty down to earth. I do realize this is just the first book in the series so there is still much to learn about the residents of Destiny and its visitors.

I enjoyed that most of the businesses in town including the eateries allow dogs. In fact most of the restaurants had patio areas perfect for pets.  After reading other series by this author I know how important pets are to her so I knew Pluckie would play a major role in this story. Like all mysteries there is the last good twist that gives us readers that “aha moment”.

Linda O. Johnston is off to a good start with this series. I am looking forward to a return trip to Destiny to see what Rory and Pluckie are  up to next.

Los Angeles animal shelter manager Lauren Vancouver has a soft spot for animals in need—and a keen eye for crime. . .

HotPets is adding a new line of pet accessories with HotPets Bling. To showcase their new merchandise they have huge ads all over the city with teacup puppies wearing the new “bling”. This has caused a huge interest in the petite canines. Lauren is trying to locate more of the little ones needing forever homes. Her search leads her to shelter in the Midwest that has just rescued a bunch of pups from a puppy mill. She uses her connections to bring the dogs to her HotRescues shelter. She never expected they would be joined by a very cantankerous human, Teresa Kantrim. She has cared for the dogs since they were rescued and does trust the people in “LA LA Land” with her precious cargo. Not everyone was a fan of Teresa or her biting comments but Lauren is clearly shaken to find her dead body at the shelter. Now it’s up to Lauren to find which person disliked her enough to put her down permanently.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Lauren is a fabulous protagonist, she loves these animals with all her heart and loves her job. She just naturally gets involved in these crimes while putting herself in danger. She is one gutsy broad in this installment. I wanted to stop her from going some of the places she did.

Johnston has created wonderful characters including a couple of the canine variety. The mystery was very suspenseful and it took me some time, o.k. I figured out right along with Lauren, that is a tribute of great storytelling.

The thing I really like about this series is the awareness it brings to pet adoption. HotRescues is the dream animal shelter because it has a benefactor to help with the costs and a staff of volunteers that really get the importance of their jobs. There are shelters everywhere that need help, money, volunteers and staff to keep the places open and the animals taken care of each and every day. After reading these stories I wish I was physically able to volunteer but since I can’t do that I try to write a check or have my husband pick up an extra bag of food to drop at a shelter. Most of our pets were rescues. I don’t know how I would get through my day without my furry blonde dog at my feet and the black and white one lying close by.

Pet lovers will love this series and after you are done I bet you will want to help out a shelter near you. The mystery and the characters are terrific but the story behind the mystery will stick with you forever.

LOJPublicityPhotoWriters get their inspirations in all sorts of ways, but this is the first time I think I ever got one of mine because of driving frequently by a certain spot in my neighborhood.

I live in the Hollywood Hills. I love animals, especially dogs, and have a great deal of fun writing my Pet Rescue Mystery series.

One day a while ago, as I drove along Ventura Boulevard near my home, I spotted a new sign outside a building that might previously have been vacant. It indicated that the American Humane Association had moved in there. Since I drive past that area often, I kept seeing that sign… and it inspired the topic of my new Pet Rescue Mystery:Oodles of Poodles.

For, yes, I dropped in one day and began talking to people and learning what American Humane is about–a wonderful group.

Oodles of Poodles takes place in the film industry, very appropriate for a series centered around a no-kill pet shelter in L.A.’s San Fernando Valley. It’s sort of a story within a story, since it’s about a movie being filmed about rescued poodles, starring– you’ve got it!–rescued poodles!

oodles of poodlesMy protagonist Lauren Vancouver, who’s the chief administrator of the HotRescues shelter, gets involved because of those cherished and adorable poodles. She’s also involved because one of the film’s co-producers is Dante DeFrancisco, the generous benefactor of HotRescues. Lauren finds herself visiting the film sets often on his behalf–and also to observe how the dogs are being treated. Also present is a Certified Animal Safety Representative™ of the American Humane Association, which is the only group that can provide the coveted “No Animals Were Harmed”® designation–their registered trademark.

One night the director, who had been endangering the poodles during the filming, is run over by a car. Murdered. The chief suspect is Lauren’s good friend, veterinarian and TV personality Dr. Carlie Stellan. Of course Lauren has to find the real murderer and solve the crime to help Carlie… and the dogs.

Oodles of Poodles was a lot of fun to research. I got to communicate with people within American Humane and learn about their work with films and scripted TV shows that include animals.

It was fun to write, particularly since it involved lots of dogs in unique situations–as well as utilizing Lauren’s amateur sleuthing abilities.

And these days, when I attend a movie where animals are included in the cast, I always wait till the very end of the credits to look for that very treasured certification that “No Animals Were Harmed.”

Where do your inspirations come from? Are they everywhere around you?

Oodles of Poodles

Lauren is on hand to observe a movie that stars oodles of poodles, a movie about rescued poodles no less. Also on hand are Lauren’s friend, veterinarian Carlie Stellan and Grant, a handsome representative from the American Humane Association. They are all there to insure no animals are hurt or in danger during the movie production.

Unfortunately the movie’s director didn’t have anyone protecting him. He was killed in a very suspicious hit and run accident after arguing with several people about animal safety. Carlie was one of the more outspoken people speaking up for the animal and that lands her in the hot seat as a prime suspect. Lauren start to search through the oodles of clues to try to save her friend and catch a killer before someone else is put out of the picture.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

I love this series because the author takes on real things that happen with animals and builds her intriguing mysteries around that issue. I have wondered for years about animals on television and movies and will now look for the “No Animals Harmed” tagline.

Lauren really does step in “it” in this installment, so much so that a few of the members of the production crew really don’t even want to be around her. She was clearly stumped by this mystery until the clues started to come together. I like that in a story – when the protagonist struggles with the evidence and suspects – and things don’t just magically fall into place. The struggles with Matt and Lauren’s relationship scare me a bit. Is their relationship strong enough to weather the ebbs and flows of the life that keep getting thrown at them?

Great Characters – Great Animals – Great Setting – Great Plot – Great Cozy Mystery!!!’

Hounds Abound (Pet Rescue Mystery, #3)

Lauren Vancouver is the administrator at HotRescues, a No-Kill Animal Shelter in Los Angeles, California, but she works with a whole network of groups and people to save and protect our furry friends. Save Them All is a new shelter that is a place for those handicapped and senior pets that need more care and are extremely hard to place in loving homes. Lauren is thrilled about this new shelter and it all ready to help Bella Frankovick promote her new venture anyway she can. Then Bella’s husband is murdered and Bella is the prime suspect. To help Save Them All, Lauren must help Bella prove her innocence and get a leash on the real killer.

Dollycas’s Thoughts
Again Linda O. Johnston shines a light on another pet issue, handicapped and senior pets. They may have issues but can live without pain and a pretty good quality of life. They just need to find the right homes. Save Them All Shelter sets up the perfect bridge between the two.

She wraps this information is a clever mystery for amateur sleuth Lauren to solve with plenty of distractions to keep the reader guessing. These are wonderful characters that connect through their love of animals and become friends and maybe a bit more.

Pet lovers will love this story and you may even want to rescue a pet yourself.
