The second book in a delicious culinary cozy series—the muensters have arrived in Balsam Dell in this Halloween cozy mystery featuring a grilled cheese shop owner turned amateur sleuth

After a long hot summer in Balsam Dell, Carly Hale is ready for crisp Vermont weather and gourmet grilled cheeses at her Grilled Cheese Eatery. And the upcoming Halloween food competition is the perfect way to impress the locals.

But Ferris Menard, the owner of Sub-a-Dub-Sub, is nursing a serious grudge against Carly. Two days before the competition, one of Carly’s employees quit his part-time gig at Menard’s sub shop, sending Menard into a serious snit. In a confrontation at the Eatery, Menard accused Carly of sabotage and vowed to bring her down.

That’s when Menard’s body is found in his kitchen the morning after the competition, a steak knife sticking out of his heart. But Menard had a slew of enemies, and if Carly doesn’t figure out which one is the culprit, she might find herself—or someone she cares about—serving grilled cheese sandwiches under lock and brie!

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Autumn in Vermont is perfect for a cup of soup and a grilled cheese sandwich. Carly Hale has a bit of competition, though, not just for her food but for an employee too. Ferris Menard gets on his high horse when he decides that Carly is the bain of his existence. One of his employees that had been working part-time for both Menard’s Sub-a-Dub-Sub Shop and Carly’s Grilled Cheese Eatery has decided to work full time for just Carly. He went so far as to publicly accuse Carly of sabotaging his business during the Halloween Scary-Licious Smorgasbord food competition.

When Menard’s daughter finds her father’s dead body the next morning in his shop’s kitchen with a steak knife plunged into his heart Carly knows she will be on the list of suspects, along with someone she cares about. It should be a long list though, the man had made plenty of enemies over the years but she can’t take any chances. Carly’s going to do her best to flip the real killer and fry them up in a pan before she sends them off to jail.

Carly has settled into her new life well. Her eatery has really taken off and she has great friends and employees that support her in everything she does. She is a strong protagonist but she may need to fine-tune her investigation techniques. One person tells her, “You know Carly, you’re about as subtle as a coronary.” Another tells her, “a careful driver like you is easy to tail.” But her heart is always in the right place she will do anything she can to help anyone. I love the direction her relationship with Ari is taking. And Havarti, Carly’s lovable Morkie always makes me smile.

Carly’s supporting cast is great too. Grant and Suzanne are wonderful employees that truly have become friends. Suzanne has a little accident in this story that put her out of commission for a while but that made for some interesting temporary employees. I will say my favorite character in No Parm, No Foul was retired teacher, Evelyn Fitch. She is a regular at Carly’s Eatery and she really is a special lady who plays a major role in the mystery.

The mystery had as many tangles as a Halloween cobweb with a lot of evidence pointed in one direction. It is clearly a frame-up. Carly gets clues from some unusual sources. One who uses poetry to help her get on the right track. She does get frustrated but doesn’t give up. I was totally engaged following along with her step by step. There were some really nice twists and that meant my jaw dropped when the killer was outed during a scary and exciting reveal.

This second Grilled Cheese Mystery, No Parm, No Foul, is an excellent addition to this series. I do suggest having a cup of tomato soup and a grilled cheese handy as your start reading because the cravings start almost immediately. There are a couple of recipes at the end of the book you are going to want to try too.

Engaging characters, a fun mystery, and a cheesy-filled story will have you coming back for more. Cheddar Late Than Dead will be released on January 31, 2023.

The first in a delicious new culinary cozy series featuring a grilled cheese eatery owner who must solve murders in her small town before she is put under lock and brie

Back in Balsam Dell to heal after the death of her husband, Carly Hale is finally pursuing her lifelong dream—opening Carly’s Grilled Cheese Eatery. After only five months, business is booming as Vermont vacationers and townspeople alike flock to lunch on her Party Havartis and other grilled cheese concoctions. All but Lyle Bagley, Carly’s one-time high school boyfriend and now town bully who just bought the building that houses her eatery and wants Carly out. After a muenster of a fight, Carly’s forced to put her nose to the rind and find a solution to keep her business afloat.

That is…until Lyle is discovered dead behind the dumpster of Carly’s shop, and one of her employees becomes the prime suspect. In order to save her eatery and prove her friend’s innocence, Carly must sleuth out the killer before she’s the one who gets grilled.

With a delightful cast of characters, an inventive amateur sleuth, and a whole host of cheesy hijinks, Up to No Gouda is the perfect cozy murder mystery to melt into.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Grilled Cheese, Yes Please! I have been excited about this book/series since I saw a post about it on Facebook several months ago.

Carly Hale has returned to her hometown of Balsam Dell, Vermont after the death of her husband. Doing a life reset isn’t easy but Carly has always dreamed about opening a restaurant, Carly’s Grilled Cheese Eatery, and serving up a delicious variety of soup and grilled cheese sandwiches. She has leased a building, remodeled it to her needs and since opening the door she has had a very successful business. Now the building has been sold to Lyle Bagley, who she once dated, and he wants her out.  After her banker gives her the news she is upset but determined to find a new place for her thriving business.

But then Lyle Bagley is found dead in the alley behind a dumpster behind Carly’s eatery. But Carly isn’t the only one getting grilled about his death. The police decide one of her employees is their prime suspect and it has her cheesed off royally. She finds herself sandwiched between saving her business and saving her friend. Can she do both or will they both brie out of luck?

This is a marvelous theme for a new cozy series but don’t start reading it on an empty stomach or you will be stopping to make a grilled cheese and some tomato soup. That is exactly what we had for supper before I started reading so my appetite was taken care of for the most part. Carly has some delicious variations on her menu and I took note of each one for future reference.

Ms. Reilly has introduced her readers to a great cast of core characters. Carly is instantly likable. She is dealing with the grief of losing her husband and starting her business and reconnecting herself to her hometown. She has a top-notch staff in Suzanne and Grant. They all seem to genuinely care about each other and that really shines when one of them is a the top of the list of suspects. All these characters have loads of room for growth and I am happy about that.

There is also a diverse cast of supporting characters. They are all well-crafted with purpose. Some will appear in just this story and others I hope will pop up in future installments. I was really taken with Becca, a homeless veteran. She really added to my enjoyment of this story.

Who killed Lyle? This mystery was very well-plotted complete with cheesy strings to some clever subplots. The victim was not well-liked at all serving up several suspects with a motive to want the man six feet under. I must say the author is very talented in her ways of misdirection. After an abundance of twists and turns, I was totally surprised by the dramatic reveal. She also was able to tie up loose ends in the subplots while building excitement for the next book in this yummy series.

Up To No Gouda was really good! In fact, it was great and a true Perfect Escape. The best thing is we don’t have too long to wait for Book 2. No Parm No Foul is scheduled for release on July 26.

Here, killer, killer, killer . . .

For the first time in sixteen years, Lara Caphart has returned to her hometown of Whisker Jog, New Hampshire. She wants to reconnect with her estranged Aunt Fran, who’s having some difficulty looking after herself—and her eleven cats. Taking care of a clowder of kitties is easy, but keeping Fran from being harassed by local bully Theo Barnes is hard. The wealthy builder has his sights set on Fran’s property and is determined to make her an offer she doesn’t dare refuse.

Then Lara spots a blue-eyed ragdoll cat that she swears is the reincarnation of her beloved Blue, her childhood pet. Pursuing the feline to the edge of Fran’s yard, she stumbles upon the body of Theo Barnes, clearly a victim of foul play. To get her and Fran off the suspect list, Lara finds herself following the cat’s clues in search of a killer. Is Blue’s ghost really trying to help her solve a murder, or has Lara inhaled too much catnip?

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Lara hasn’t been home in quite a while, but when one of her friends contacts her about her Aunt Fran and her house full of cats she knows she needs to head back and reconnect with her aunt.  She finds her aunt does not only need help with her felines but she has some medical issues to attend to as well. Fran is also being harassed by one of her neighbors who is determined to have a portion of her land. It seems Lara has arrived just in time. Just in time to find the bully, Theo Barnes dead on her aunt’s property and it wasn’t a natural death. She and her aunt quickly become the prime suspects so Lara adds “find the real killer” to her already long to do list. She may have an unlikely partner helping her solve the crime that makes her pursuit very interesting.

Aunt Fran, aka “the crazy cat lady” and Lara and all the feline companions have pawed their way right into my heart. Heck, if I had a place like Fran’s I would be a crazy cat lady too. Her genuine desire to care for these rescue kitties drew me into the story. Lara’s devotion to caring for her aunt and the cats was heartwarming. These are two formidable women and make a great team.

I like the way the author took time to introduce us to the characters, including the kittens. The first page of the story introduces the “Cast of Feline Characters” including Blue, a very important feline in this story. They are all unique with different personalities, just like real cats.

We also meet several other residents of Whisker Jog, friends and suspects. The victim was not well liked so many people should have been on the list of suspects but Police Chief Jerry Whitley set his sights on Fran and Lara immediately.

I am a big fan of Linda Reilly, all of her Deep Fried Mysteries were Perfect Escapes for me. I love the way she tells a story and sets the scenes. She has a very descriptive style that makes you feel you are right there with the characters. Again in Escape Claws, the mystery unfolds at a very comfortable pace. It was not an easy mystery to solve and it is offset by the inner turmoil Lara is facing. Her aunt needs her but she has to go back to her job. The storylines are woven together very skillfully.

You don’t need to love or even like cats to enjoy this story, but if you do you will absolutely love this book.

This series is off to a fabulous start! I cant’ wait to return to Whisker Jog!

Cozy Wednesday with Linda Reilly – Author of A Frying Shame – #Review / #Giveaway too! @BerkleyMystery

Welcome to Cozy Wednesday!
I am excited to welcome Linda Reilly back to Escape With Dollycas today!

A funny thing happened on the way to the publisher . . .

There are so many components that go into writing a mystery. Fun characters, sneaky red herrings, a plethora of guilty-looking suspects . . .  all of these have to be dumped together, shaken up, and poured out into a cohesive story.

When I was writing the initial draft of A FRYING SHAME, I needed to come up with a street name. The street itself wasn’t important—simply a quick reference by the police detective as to why she was late for her meeting with Talia Marby, my main character.

Normally I’d stare out the window to dream up a name, or I’d think of a street name from my childhood. I still can’t recall how I came up with “Oriole Road” that day, but it found its way into the story.

A few months after I turned in the manuscript to my publisher, my husband broke his hip. During the early stages of his post-surgery rehab, we decided the time was right for us to move to a place where he’d no longer have to climb stairs. I found a promising apartment complex nearby, and decided to check it out. A newly renovated unit had just become available, with full bath and master bedroom on the ground level. It was perfect! Even more delightful was that the upstairs bedroom would make the ideal writing lair for me.

We took the apartment. As soon as my husband was well enough to go home after weeks of physical therapy, we moved in. The address of our wonderful new apartment? Oriole Court. But the street name didn’t even ring a bell — not until the publisher sent me the edits for A Frying Shame. I was stunned to realize I’d named a random street Oriole Road months before we’d even thought about moving! (insert Twilight Zone music here)

I’ll bet you’re thinking I’d driven past that street before, and that somehow the name got stuck in my sub-conscious. Nope. Oriole Court is an internal street within the apartment community. I couldn’t have seen it from the main drag unless I’d driven into the complex. And I hadn’t.

I’ve decided that the universe was whispering in my ear the day I made up that street name. The hubby and I are very happy in our Oriole Court apartment, just as Talia Marby, the fry cook in the Deep Fried mysteries, is loving her new digs in Wrensdale, Massachusetts. Living in her nana’s bungalow, she’s been having a blast transforming the old fish and chips shop into a deep-fried eatery.

But it’s not without its challenges. Wherever Talia goes, murder seems to pop into the picture. If you’re in the Berkshires, stop by Fry Me a Sliver and enjoy a deep-fried treat. The ambiance is cozy, the AC is pumping out chilled air, and the deep fryer is sizzling. And be sure to eavesdrop on the local gossip . . . you can bet it’ll be all about murder.

Fry another day.

The town of Wrensdale is abuzz with excitement when Steeltop Foods sponsors a cooking contest to promote its new product, the Flavor Dial. With a $25,000 prize at stake, all the contestants are on edge, including Talia Marby, owner of Fry Me A Sliver. She hopes her mini deep-fried apple pies will win her the money to pay off the renovations on her restaurant. But when Norma Ferguson wins with her flaky-top chicken stew, the tensions dial up even more.

After Norma is found dead at her cooking station, the police suspect a losing contestant got a little too hot under the collar. Now it’s crunch time as Talia works to catch the killer and clear her name before another cook gets burned.

Includes delicious recipes!

Dollycas’s Thoughts

We return to Wrensdale just in time for a cooking contest sponsored by Steeltop Fods. Talia is hoping to win the $25,000 prize for her mini deep-fried apple pies, but Norma Ferguson grabs the top prize for her flaky-top chicken stew. Before she can even deposit the check she is found dead in her cooking station and Talia’s part time employee Lucas is in the hospital in critical condition. Of course the police’s top suspects are the losing contestants, but Talia thinks there has to be other suspects with more motivation. When a key piece of evidence lands one of the contestants in jail Talia turns up the heat to catch a killer but she may be the one who fries.

I do enjoy the way Talia handles herself both in business and in her sleuthing. She is super friendly and honestly just wants to get to the truth. She does veer in some dangerous directions when her investigation goes awry making for some scary moments. She is a character with a lot of depth. If I lived in Wrensdale I think we would become fast friends. I also would love to meet Bojangles, the handsome kitty on the cover.

As in Out of the Dying Pan we are introduced to several new characters in this story. Everyone involved in the contest, a politician running for office ad his wife and other members of the community. They all bring their unique personalities to the story.

Wrensdale is the perfect backdrop for this cozy mystery series. Large enough to bring a diverse group of characters into play but small enough for everyone to know everybody’s secrets to make amateur investigating fun.

This story reeled me in quickly. The only thing that could have made this book better was if it came with free samples. The food descriptions had my tummy growling. There are recipes in the back of the book, but I really wanted fish and chips so I made Mr. Dollycas take me out for supper.

A catchy cozy with a clever plot and cunning characters. Bait your lines and catch your own copy. If you are new to the series start at the beginning to fill up your reading plate and dig right in.

One of the things I love to do is to poke around at a crafts fair. Whether it’s to snag a hand-made gift for the holiday, buy a whimsical pin, or pick up an herb packet from which to make a tasty dip, I find that spending an hour or so at a local crafts event really sparks my creative side.

out of the dying panOut of the Dying Pan, the second book in the Deep Fried mystery series, gave me the perfect opportunity to feature a crafts fair of sorts. Talia Marby, the newly-minted owner of Fry Me a Sliver, has volunteered to sell squares of deep-fried marble cake drizzled with raspberry sauce at the Town of Wrensdale’s annual fundraiser. Armed with a portable deep fryer, she sets up shop in a corner of the community center’s gymnasium, right next to a vintage accessories booth. While the delectable scent of Talia’s deep-fried cakes fills the air, unfriendly vibes drift over from the adjoining booth. Talia can’t imagine why Ria, the woman selling the vintage items, keeps throwing hateful looks at her. Talia doesn’t even know the woman! Then Talia spies a familiar scarf on one of Ria’s displays—it was the very scarf Talia had knitted for her nana eons ago. But how did Ria get her nana’s scarf? Talia tries to buy it, but is soundly snubbed. When Talia later stumbles upon Ria’s body, the scarf knotted around Ria’s slender neck, she catapults to the top of the suspect list. She later learns that the scarf was stained with telltale raspberry sauce . . .

I’m happy to report that I’ve never tripped over a body at a crafts fair. This past December I attended a huge crafts event that had all my favorites – glassware, pottery, baked goods (can’t go without those), and yes . . . knitted scarves. At one booth, a woman was selling gorgeous greeting cards. One set of cards in particular depicted forest animals lining up to visit an adorable Santa figure. It gave me an idea. I purchased the cards, which were blank inside. On my computer, I typed my own holiday greeting in red ink and printed out a bunch of them. Using a tiny paper cutter, I trimmed my holiday message to fit inside each card. A swipe across the top with a glue stick ensured that it would stay in place. What I loved about creating my own holiday message was that I could change the greeting, or even the font, to suit the recipient. Not only was this a fun project, but it gave me a way to personalize each of my cards.

So tell me, are you crafty? Have you ever set up a table at a crafts fair? I love hearing about readers’ creative pursuits!

For Talia Marby, the sweet smell of success is a lot like the pungent aroma of fried fish and vinegar. Her new business, Fry Me a Sliver, is rapidly expanding beyond fish and chips to become one of the best eateries in the Berkshires. But the nasty owner of a neighboring boutique is making a stink, baiting Talia in a very public fight at a community center fundraiser and nursing an inexplicable grudge.

When the boutique owner is found strangled with Talia’s scarf knotted around her neck, our favorite fish fryer finds herself in hot oil. Needing to clear her name, and fast, Talia’s investigation soon yields some shocking surprises as well as a sizzling suspicion: someone had good reason to want the victim dead—and it’s frying Talia’s nerves…

Includes delicious recipes!

Dollycas’s Thoughts

I read and reviewed the first book in this series, Fillet of Murder earlier this month, and loved it. This one grabbed me that same way.

Taila Marby now owns the restaurant and it has a new name, Fry Me a Sliver. She also has a new, employee, Martha Hoelscher, and she is a bit prickly to be around, but she is a good worker.  Lucas is still there as part time help and his skateboard goes almost everywhere he does.  Talia is working to make the place her own and adding some new items to the menu. She takes part in a fundraiser for the community center and debuts something new. It is a hit with almost everyone. Everyone except the vendor in the next booth. She owns a new boutique in the Wrensdale Arcade and she doesn’t like Talia or her food. By the time Talia starts to figure out why, the woman is dead and Talia is the primary suspect. How is she going to get herself out of this mess?

I liked that this time the murder takes place away from the Wrensdale Arcade and that meant we met several new people. Some nice, some a little weird, and a some that could be trouble. We do spend plenty of time at the Arcade with the cobblestone walks, unique shops and Talia’s eatery. Reilly really describes the scene well. I had a firm picture in my mind.

She also creates full bodied characters with a lot of depth. Some of the back stories are sad and my heart really felt bad for them. But not everyone is who they seem and those twists were so great. I would probably say one really shocked me. Totally surprised.

I was missing Bea, the previous owner of the restaurant. I was thrilled when she made a cameo appearance!

I have to mention that kitty on the cover, his name is Bojangles, Bo for short and he has not only captured Talia’s heart but mine too.

You will be craving fish and other fried goodies throughout this entire story so prepare according, We had fish for dinner. 🙂

Another delectable delight from this author. I am ready to place my order for the next installment today. FRY ME!!!

Talia Marby serves up delectable English deep fried fare in the heart of the Berkshires—but she soon discovers there’s something fishy going on…

Sometimes in this life, you have to fish or cut bait. After walking away from a miserable job and an even worse boyfriend, Talia Marby has no regrets. She’s returned to her hometown and is happy to help her dear friend Bea Lambert by working at Lambert’s Fish & Chips, a cornerstone of a charming shopping plaza designed to resemble an old English village.

But not all the shop owners are charming. Phil Turnbull has been pestering Bea to sign a petition against a new store opening up, and his constant badgering is enough to make her want to boil him in oil. When Talia and Bea stumble upon Turnbull murdered in his shop, the police suspect Bea. Now it’s up to Talia to fish around for clues and hook the real killer before her friend has to trade serving food for serving time…

Includes delicious recipes!

Dollycas’s Thoughts

What a delicious mystery!

Talia Marcy leaves a job she hates and a crumby boyfriend behind to return hometown and work at a place that is like her second home. She worked at Lambert’s Fish & Chips in high school and the owners Bea and Howie became almost a second set of parents. She knew it was just the place for her to reset and regroup her life until the right job comes along. Then the cantankerous Phil Trumbull shows up to torment Bea with some kind of petition to stop a new comic book store from opening. Bea has a few choice words for him, deep frying him in oil were some of the included words, but she never meant it in the literal sense. When Talia and Bea find him dead, (not fried), Bea’s words come back to bite her when she becomes the #1 suspect. Talia decides to prove Bea’s innocence by trying to catch the killer herself. Hopefully she doesn’t become the day’s catch herself.

I love Talia, she’s strong and smart and she deeply cares about her friends. Bea means the world to her and they work together like a well-oiled machine. Bea is a special lady too. Not afraid of hard work and with a heart as big as all outdoors. She reminds me of my own mom. I was really engaged by both of them. Whitnee also works for Bea. She is a student with a very overbearing mother. Both Bea and Talia do their best to look out for her.

The setting for this story is the charming Wrensdale Arcade. A  shopping plaza where all the shop exteriors looked like they popped right out of an old English village. It sounds like a very unique place.

The murder happens very early in the story but readers still have time to figure out enough about Phil Turnbull to understand why he was so disliked. As the story continued and more suspects were revealed and we see they all had motivation to kill the man.  As quickly as the man was killed the clues quickly lead to someone I totally didn’t expect as the killer. I had the WOW light bulb over my head. A really well executed twist.

I really enjoyed the background story of Talia staying in her Nana’s house while it was up for sale. Dealing with realtors, trying to to make herself not too much at home because this is just a temporary living arrangement. She even has a kitty come to her door who she starts to feed and soon the little guy has not only wormed his way into the house but also Talia’s heart.

This is truly a grand debut. It checks all the boxes of what I love in a great cozy mystery. – Likable and believable characters, a comfortable setting, and a mystery that keeps you guessing right up to the final reveal.
