Poisoned Pages – Tricia Miles, mystery bookstore owner and amateur sleuth, throws a housewarming cocktail party in her new apartment and has cooked all the food by herself–quite a feat for someone who previously couldn’t boil water. Then one of her guests is poisoned and dies. Tricia’s left to wonder if her cooking is to blame or if there’s something much more sinister at play. Either way, Tricia’s once again in hot water with her ex-lover, Chief Baker.

Meanwhile the charming town of Stoneham is being disrupted by a vandalism crime wave. It’s the hot topic in the race for Chamber of Commerce president which sees Tricia pitted against two bitter rivals. With all that’s going on can she find the killer before she’s the next item on the menu?

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Tricia Miles just has a way of finding dead bodies. Many in town call her a jinx, some straight to her face. Well, this time she doesn’t even need to leave her newly redone apartment to add another dead body to her list. While hosting a housewarming party one of her guests keels over dead. Tricia isn’t much of a cook but she never imagined someone dying after eating her food. The guy must have had an allergic reaction, she can’t be held responsible for that. She didn’t even know the guy, he was the date of one of her other guests. Chief Bakes soon finds out what the toxin was and it is not something commonly found in food, especially Tricia’s kitchen. Which means the man was murdered!

While all this is going on Tricia is running for Chamber of Commerce president. A position her sister has decided to give up to dedicate more time to her businesses. Unfortunately, she has two opponents and they are discrediting her all over town and using that whole jinx thing against her. Can she win an election and catch a killer? She sure is going to try.

There is never a dull moment in Booktown, something is always happening. Tricia’s party, the chamber election, Tricia’s sister Angelica is worried about something, Stoneham as a vandal causing damage and then, of course, there is the dead guy on Tricia’s floor. Ms. Barrett packs Poisoned Pages with a very captivating cozy mystery. In fact, there is more than one mystery to solve and they may or may not be connected.

The staff at Haven’t Got A Clue always has Tricia’s back. This allows her plenty of time to tool around town trying to get the answers she needs to book the person that used her party for their crime. She also spends plenty of time with her sister hoping to find answers there too. Mr. Everett and Pixie Poe are the perfect employees. Pixie has really come into her own. Her creativity shines this time as she pulls out all the stops to help Tricia become the next Chamber of Commerce President. Mr. Everett has other things on his mind. He and his wife are adopting an elderly cat. He is so excited and has plenty of pictures of the feline to share.

The plot of this story tangles all the mystery elements together. With only a week to campaign before the election, Tricia has the perfect opportunity to question many of the suspects. She also got her sister to reveal what was bothering her and that gave her another mystery to solve. She plans to leave the vandal to the police but she thinks she knows their identity too. It was so much fun to traipse around town each step of the way with Tricia.  I was completely gobsmacked when all was revealed.

This truly is one of my favorite series. I love these characters. I am excited about where Tricia may be heading in her personal life. Angelica unleashes a surprise in this story that will change her life in a really good way. These sisters worked hard to get their relationship where it is today and I have enjoyed following along. So much has happened over the course of this series but the author keeps her characters and their stories fresh and relevant. You can read this book as a stand-alone but this is a series the really should be read from the start, in order, to fully appreciate how far these characters have come.

I am so excited for the next installment of this series.

Just when things are getting back to normal in Booktown, Tricia and Angelica have their lives turned upside down by a shocking visitor from their past in this latest entry in Lorna Barrett’s New York Times bestselling series.

Tricia Miles, mystery bookstore owner and amateur sleuth, is in for a surprise when her ne’er-do-well father, John, comes to town—and promptly becomes a prime suspect in the murder of a woman with her own scandalous past. Even Tricia’s faith in the old man is shaken when the Stoneham police break the news that her father is a known con man who has done jail time.

But what about bestselling thriller author Steven Richardson? Is it a coincidence that he arrived for a book signing just before the crime or that the victim was found with a signed copy of his latest bestseller?

From Merlot to murder, Tricia is determined to clear the family name before another body shows up and ruins Stoneham’s first—and highly anticipated—wine and jazz festival.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

When I finished this book all I could say is WOW!

Tricia is residing above the Chamber of Commerce office and volunteering there too as she waits for the insurance company to resolve her claim so she can renovate the Haven’t Got A Clue bookstore after the fire. While walking her sister’s dog, Sarge, they find Pete Renquist, the president of the Stoneham Historical Society, lying in the park gazebo and she quickly calls 911 but not in time to save Pete. It turns out he was murdered and Tricia is going to find out who killed her friend. There is also another mystery in Stoneham and she is going to solve that one too!

So much happens in this book and I couldn’t read it fast enough. One suspicion I have had for a while finally is confirmed but to say this story was a wild ride just doesn’t do it justice. Lorna Barrett hits this one completely out of the park and then some. She even had me shedding a few tears.

I love these characters and even with Haven’t Got A Clue closed for the time being we are able to keep track and catch up with all of them. Babies are arriving soon, someone has a new boyfriend and Christopher wants Tricia to give him another chance.

The entire Booktown Mystery series is fantastic and each installment tops the last. To get maximum reading enjoyment the series should be read in order. The plots are crisp and the characters have continued to grow. If you are already a fan of the series all I can say is READ THIS BOOK NOW!! You are going to love it!

Cranky Chamber of Commerce receptionist Betsy Dittmeyer is done reading people the riot act. After she’s crushed by a fallen bookcase, the next item to be read is her last will and testament—which is packed with surprises. It soon comes to light that Betsy was hiding volumes of dark secrets behind that perpetual frown of hers—and one of them just might have been a motive for murder.

While Tricia tries to help Angelica—the newly elected Chamber of Commerce president and Betsy’s boss—solve the mystery, she discovers a hidden chapter in her own family history that rocks her to her very core. And with her ex-husband and the chief of police vying for her affections, it’s doubly hard to focus on who might have buried Betsy in a tomb of tomes.

But as Tricia and Angelica try to read between the lines, they need to watch their step…and make sure the killer doesn’t catch them between the stacks.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Hang on tight! This book gets off to a fast start and had this reader tuned in from page one.

Angelica is trying to start out on the right foot with the Chamber but Betsy Dittmeyer is not happy about it. Her point of view ceases to matter very quickly when her death has Angelica and sister Tricia trying to find out who helped bury Betsy under that pile of books. She wasn’t well liked so there ate quite a few suspects. It seems Betsy also has a few secrets that could have led to her demise.

Lorna Barrett does it again. My emotions were reeling with this story. I had tears in my eyes at one point.

Haven’t Got A Clue is a very special bookstore with very special employees. I love these characters. Pixie continues to shine and Mr. Everett is the perfect gentleman. Tricia is so lucky to have them by her side handling the ups and downs or not only the bookstore but Booktown as well. The are some changes coming to Booktown with Angelica leading the Chamber and Nigela Ricita Associates taking on a larger role in the properties in town there. Some other characters have some special announcements too that will be changing their lives.

Then of course there is Tricia’s love life or lack of a love life to add a little more to the story.

What I really enjoyed was that Tricia and Angelica continue to get closer as a family secret is revealed. It is time for these sisters to stick together and support each other.

The author has packed this pages with so much that I challenge anyone to put it down once you start reading. I truly hated for the story to end. I can’t wait to see what happens next!!

cozy wednesday 2013 640Welcome to Cozy Wednesday!!

I am so happy Lorna had time to drop by today for a little interview!!

Redhead_author_pic
1. You have two books out today, the new hardcover, Not the Killing Type and the paperback of Murder on the Half Shelf, so you are doing double duty promoting both. Tricia is wonderful character, where do you get your inspiration for her adventures?

HALF_SHELF-MMPB_medI have no idea. They just come to me. This is rather odd promoting two books at once. I’m told coming out in hardcover is an honor and shows the publisher has faith in you, but my readers haven’t quite seen it that way. Hardcovers are expensive. So for many people it’s TWO years since they read Tricia’s adventures. I’m happy that many will finally have the opportunity to read Murder on the Half Shelf. And I’m happy that the ebook price for that book will also drop to a more reasonable level. (I still think $7.99 is too a high a price to pay for an ebook, but I have no say over the pricing of these things.) I’ve introduced a few new characters to the series that I hope my readers will enjoy.

NottheKillingType-SMFor those able to pay the hardcover price, I hope they’ll enjoy Not the Killing Type, which was a lot of fun to write. (I think I enjoyed the next one, which won’t come out until July 2014, even more. It’s called Book Clubbed, and I’m highly anticipating starting the 9th book in the series this fall. That will be a joy to write. I love the storyline. No title yet, though.)

2. Is the fictional Booktown based on a real place?

The town was inspired by the real Hay on Wey, but since I’ve never been there … have no idea if it resembles it in any way. (And probably not a bit.) But the idea of a village with a lot of used bookstores was the germ of the idea for the series.

3. You write a couple of different pseudonyms, is this your choice or the publishers? Is it difficult to keep characters and settings straight?

It sure wasn’t my idea. In the beginning, you do what you’re told. My 3rd agent suggested I write under the name L.L. Bartlett. My publisher asked me to write under a pseudonym, and I chose Lorna Barrett hoping one day to have other books with my real name shelved nearby. Yay! It happened!

4. What authors do you enjoy?

I reread Barbara Michaels and Dick Francis a lot. For fun, I like Mary Kay Andrews, and I enjoy cozies by my friends: Julie Hyzy, Leann Sweeney, Deb Baker, Ellery Adams, just to name a few. Julie and Deb and I have recently formed The Story Sisters as a way to introduce our readers to our indie published works. We’d love it if people visited our website: http://storysisters-innercircle.blogspot.com/

Blue_oval

5. What are reading for fun right now?

When I’m writing, I tend to read non-fiction. Right now I’m reading Dining at Monticello. I got to go there again in March and bought this big coffee table book that recalls how our second president entertained at his beautiful mountain home. I’m reading every word and savoring it. I read a lot of cookbooks and entertaining books, and like my Victoria Square character, Katie Bonner, am a frustrated innkeeper at heart. (One drawback about coffee table books: they get heavy when you’ve got a cat on your lap, too.)

6. If money was no object and you could escape to anywhere in the world to write where would you go and what do you think the book would be about?

15761016I’ve been on three cruises in the last two years and spent most of my time writing. Getting away from the Internet is great for productivity. (Sadly, I don’t have that kind of discipline at home.) On the last two cruises, I wrote the first two books in the Tales of Telenia (fantasy) series: THRESHOLD and JOURNEY. I need to plan a vacation for this winter so that I can write the next book in the series, TRECHERY. That will be fun to write.17827442

I must admit I’m a bit disappointed that more of my readers haven’t yet found these stories. I can understand if they aren’t huge fantasy fans, but I like to think of them as fantasy lite, and not bound by the rules of traditional fantasy. (Mostly because I really don’t KNOW the rules of traditional fantasy.) All I know is that my character, astronaut Amanda Shelton, showed up one day and demanded I tell her story. I sure had a lot of fun doing it, and so far those you have tried them have found that she’s a character they can relate to. There’s a little fantasy, a little SF, a little romance, and a lot of adventure in the stories.

I can (and have and will again) write anywhere at any time. But if I had a choice, I’d go back to England, to the Cotswolds, and stay a few months. I have no idea what I’d write, but I’d write something. (Have laptop, will travel.)

November in Stoneham means a Chamber of Commerce election. The members have gathered at the Brookview Inn to cast their votes. This year is different because Bob Kelly actually has opposition. Both Tricia’s sister, Angelica and local small business owner Stan Berry are running against the long time president. But before the election can even take place the ballot shrinks to just two contenders. During a short break Tricia finds Stan Berry dead just down the hall from the meeting room. The murder weapon is a letter opener belonging to the hotel’s receptionist. Tricia can’t believe that sweet woman could kill anyone.

So now in addition to helping Angelica win an election Tricia has to track down a killer. Could it be someone she knows? She barely knew the victim but someone not only wanted him off the ballot but permanently voted out. With a hotel full of suspects she has her work cut out for her…

Dollycas’s Thoughts
Murder on the Half Shelf really left us hanging with Tricia’s ex back in town. This story didn’t pick up exactly where that one left off but Christopher is sure bringing a bit of strife to Tricia’s life. Also complicating her life is a new man in town and her on and off relationship with Police Chief Baker. Hard to keep this relationship going with Tricia so close to all these investigations.

Add to this her friend Ginny’s wedding with a planner I wouldn’t wish on my worst enemy, the Chamber election, the holidays with Pixie’s decorating ideas and another murder this story becomes one you just can’t put down.

Lorna Barrett has given us one of her best with this installment. I love this series and each one is better than the last and the first one was excellent. If this series is new to you start at the beginning and enjoy every one. Fans of this series will fall for the residents of Stoneham, New Hampshire all over again.

Murder on the Half Shelf
(A Booktown Mystery)

6th in Series

A Berkley Prime Crime Mystery
The Berkley Publishing Group
Published by The Penguin Group

Jacket Illustration by Teresa Fasolino
Jacket Design by Diane Kolsky

We return to Stoneham, New Hampshire just when a man from Tricia’s past also arrives in town. Tricia, owner of the Haven’t Got A Clue Mystery Shop and her sister Angelica have received a free night at the town’s new Bed & Breakfast, Sheer Comfort. They join some other members of the Chamber of Commerce so the hosts can have a trial run before they open to the public. Pippa and Jon Comfort are new in town but it seems they already know some of Stoneham’s prominent residents.

Of course Angelica couldn’t leave her dog at home even though the inn has a strict no pets policy. As usual she cons Tricia into sneaking him outside for a comfort walk. That’s when what should have been a relaxing overnight stay turns into nightmare. Sarge sniffs out a dead body in the backyard. Tricia has too much experience in this kind of discovery so it takes her only seconds to realize that Pippa has been murdered. If that isn’t enough, Tricia meets Pippa’s husband Jon and discovers he is actually Harry Tyler, a man Tricia loved and thought was dead for the past twenty years.

Harry needs to answer a lot of questions for Tricia but he has become the prime suspect in his wife’s murder. Tricia may not have seen this man for 20 years but she knows he wouldn’t murder his wife. There is much more to Pippa’s story and Tricia can’t help herself, she just needs to follow the clues and catch the real culprit.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Lorna Barrett is one of the best at writing a cozy mystery and I believe this is the best story she has written yet.

This is a tight, well written fast moving mystery with well developed characters readers have grown to love, including Miss Marple the cat and now Sarge the dog. We are also introduced to some new very interesting characters in this edition. I can’t wait to see how Pixie impacts the next installment. You know characters are wonderfully created when you as the reader want to reach into the pages and slap one of them up aside the head. C’mon Grant, seriously!!

The story is also chock full of humor. Angelica has quite a harrowing experience but it had me laughing out loud and quickly turning the pages. Also when Tricia meets Pixie, priceless.

This wonderful mystery is filled with plenty of suspects, more twists and turns that a carnival ride, and a few surprises. Barrett has also gone the way of television drama. This book has a cliffhanger! Yes, a cliffhanger. I was already anxious for a return trip to Stoneham but Lorna this is just cruel 🙂 I will be baking some of the delicious recipes included in the book while I wait not very patiently.
