Back in 2013 LynDee Walker released the first Nichelle Clarke Mystery, Front Page Fatality, and I loved it. She went on to release 5 more books in this series.

In July of 2018, she unveiled brand new covers that fit the stories so much better, with a new publisher. They will also be available soon as audio books.

In January she released a novella that takes place between books five and six, Cover Shot and Lethal Lifestyles as we wait for the next book to be released. Last week, she revealed the cover of the new book on Facebook and told us it was “coming soon”.

Today I am not only going to share my review of the novella Fatal Features but my reviews of the first six books in the series too. Note they are no longer classified as “cozies with an edge”. They are hard boiled with a fantastic female amateur sleuth. If you haven’t started this series or are behind, there is no better time than now to get caught up.

Front Page Fatality: A Nichelle Clarke Crime Thriller

1st in Series
Print Length: 276 pages
ASIN: B07DV4PLKF

Crime reporter Nichelle Clarke’s days can flip from macabre to comical with a beep of her police scanner. Then an ordinary accident story turns extraordinary when evidence goes missing, a prosecutor vanishes, and a sexy Mafia boss shows up with the headline tip of a lifetime. As Nichelle gets closer to the truth, her story gets more dangerous. Armed with a notebook, a hunch, and her favorite stilettos, Nichelle races to splash these shady dealings across the front page before this deadline becomes her last.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Exciting from the first page to the last!!

This story is packed with drama and strong vibrant characters. Nichelle is a powerful, feisty woman. Her boss, Bob, is her father figure and the interplay between them is just heartwarming. The other supporting characters just leap off the pages and part of the mystery is which of them are the “good guys” and which are the “bad guys”.

The dialogue is terrific, the pace is perfect, and the humor is well placed. Then there are those moments that rival a scary movie and you can’t seem to read fast enough. And don’t forget the shoes….heels to be exact… Carrie Bradford look out!!

This is a wonderful debut. Buried Leads is on deck. I can’t wait! If you like your cozies with just a bit of an edge pick this one up today!!

Buried Leads: A Nichelle Clarke Crime Thriller
Severn River Publishing (June 19, 2018)
2nd in Series
Print Length: 272 pages
ASIN: B07DWDF5WC

When an Armani-clad corpse turns up in the woods, crime reporter Nichelle Clarke smells a scoop. A little digging, and Nichelle uncovers a web of corruption that stretches all the way to Washington, D.C. Politics. Murder. And a dead lobbyist. It’s everything Nichelle’s ever dreamed of.

The cops are playing it close, the feds even closer, and Nichelle’s afraid her boss will assign the story to the political desk any day. Richmond’s new ATF SuperCop makes an arrest before she can say “Louboutin,” but Nichelle’s gut says he’s got the wrong guy.

Her sexy Mafia boss friend warns her off the case, her TV rival is hot on her designer heels, an ambitious copy editor wants her beat, and victims are piling up faster than she can track them down. As Nichelle zeroes in on the truth, it’ll take some fancy footwork to nab this headline before the killer nabs her.

Dollycas’s Thoughts
She did it again. I started reading and just couldn’t stop. The rest of the world just fell away as I chased down the clues with Nichelle.

She is juggling at least 4 headlines for the Richmond Telegraph while trying to keep a co-worker who is sleeping with the managing editor from stealing her job and still scoop a television reporter. Her ex has shown up in town as the area’s newest ATF agent and wants them to give their relationship another chance. But her new “friend” Joey has plans of his own romantically speaking and his contacts in the criminal world have him doing everything he can to keep her safe. Nichelle’s police contacts are telling her nothing. Then her investigation shows a couple of her stories seem to be connected, it is time for her inner Lois Lane to shine as she plans to scoop everyone unless someone scoops her up first.

This is fast paced with fantastic characters, the supporting ones are really growing too! There is political corruption, murder, mayhem, bullets flying, romantic tension, and a tough heroine in high heels.  Hang on tight! Lyndee Walker takes us on us a wild ride with a few surprises and even a couple laugh out loud moments. She is definitely an author to keeps our eyes on!

Small Town Spin: A Nichelle Clarke Crime Thriller
Severn River Publishing (June 19, 2018)
3rd in Series
Print Length: 314 pages
ASIN: B07DWGQZRZ

When a superstar athlete’s son turns up dead in a tiny town on the Virginia coast, crime reporter Nichelle Clarke gets the inside scoop. But she quickly spies a gaping hole her inner Lois Lane cannot ignore.

Determined to unravel the mystery, Nichelle fights off paparazzi cameras and an unexpected rival. She uncovers an illegal moonshine operation, a string of copycat suicides, and a slew of closets stacked with more skeletons than slingbacks. Chasing a killer who’s a breath from getting away with murder, Nichelle realizes too late the culprit has her number—and it might be up.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

LynDee Walker is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors and Nichelle Clarke one of my favorite protagonists. I started this story and just couldn’t put it down.

Even when she is sick Nichelle keeps going. Those darn allergies have to take a back seat when her co-worker asks her to check out a story. His friend’s son is dead and the cops say it’s suicide. The boy’s parents just don’t believe it and want Nichelle to investigate and find out what really happened. Let me say Nichelle works better sick than most of us work healthy. She puts on Manolos, channels her inner Lois Lane, and starts digging and following clues. She is bound and determined to get her exclusive story and leave TV reporter Charlie in the dust. She also wants to give the boy’s parents some kind of closure.

Walker has written quite a mystery with some corkscrew turns and twists and fabulous characters. She also adds the perfect amount of romance and humor. I really love “bad guy” Joey. He has it Nicey bad and he is always there just when he needs her most.  But Kyle is still fighting to have her give their relationship another chance. Stay tuned I think things will heat up even more in the next installment.

Devil in the Deadline: A Nichelle Clarke Crime Thriller
Severn River Publishing (June 21, 2018)
4th in Series
Print Length: 332 pages
ASIN: B07DY7VJJP

When the Richmond police offer an exclusive in exchange for help with a case, nothing—not even a costume party—stops crime reporter Nichelle Clarke from making Manolo tracks to the crime scene. The hunt leads her to a televangelist’s compound in the Virginia countryside where the Reverend may be more interested in fat stacks of cash than he is saving wayward souls.

With two sexy guys tangled up in Nichelle’s story—and in her heart—work and love are on a crash course for disaster. Pressure pours in from every corner, including a faceless new competitor that means the deadline is always five minutes ago. As secrets threaten and the truth becomes her lifeline, Nichelle must unmask the killer and nail down the story before she’s snared in the carefully-constructed web.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Nichelle Clarke is a crime reporter with excellent taste in fine footwear and she doesn’t let those high heels hold her back when she needs to climb to the latest crime scene. The scene she finds is just ghastly and almost beyond words. But her new competition, a blogger, has no problem putting all the gruesome details out there. The big question is where is she getting her information. Nichelle is supposed to have an exclusive agreement with the cops! for her help in the investigation. That investigation puts Nichelle’s life in danger but she will do anything to get the story and catch a killer. It doesn’t hurt that she has her old high school boyfriend, now ATF Agent Kyle and a hunk like Joey with his questionable underworld ties watching her back, but can they keep her safe this time?

This entire series is absolutely awesome. Each story is just full of action, thrills, romance and humor too! LynDee Walker just keeps topping herself!

I love the characters! Nicey is such a strong woman and she is always on a deadline. This time she receives help from a very unlikely person. She also never knows when bad-boy Joey (no last name) will appear but his kisses never fail to curl her toes. Kyle is still interested in rekindling their romance and while she knows his last name and he would offer her a more stable life there is just no toe curling. But he isn’t giving up. I also like her editor at the paper. He seems like a man with common sense in an industry that is changing on a daily basis. He fights hard for his job and for Nichelle and makes an excellent sounding board for her.

The plot is fantastic. The crime seems to be pure evil and the twists really add to the suspense. We also learn more about Nichelle and the story ends with quite a cliffhanger. LynDee Walker’s journalist’s skills shine and have made her an excellent mystery writer.

It’s been a slow news month in Richmond, and crime reporter Nichelle Clarke is enjoying the downtime when ominous messages and a dead body kick things into high gear. And that’s before the guy with the rifle takes a hospital full of people hostage.

Up to the top of her knee-high Prada boots in leads, Nichelle finds her favorite detectives under pressure to make an arrest, but it doesn’t add up—and ignoring the “why” of this story could cost Nichelle the most important person in her life.

With too much to lose, a shot at the story of a lifetime, and a missing bullet that might be the key, landing this headline could save the day, but can Nichelle dig up the truth before the killer buries her with it?

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Book #5 in this series starts out with Nicey lamenting about no news to her rushing in her high heels to a hospital on lockdown because a man has a gun. It makes the strange text messages she has been receiving pretty mundane. She knows she needs to investigate them but they will have to wait because a gun trumps a text every time. LynDee Walker has us on the edge of seats with this one.

It’s all about the “WHY”. Why would a man bring a loaded rifle into a hospital? Nichelle Clarke needs to find the “Why” to this story and in doing so investigates the medical treatments and research, the test trials, and the money. The money made by drug companies, insurance companies, and health professionals. The scary question  – Would cures be held back because more money is made treating the disease instead of curing it? Walker puts a personal face to this and puts her protagonist in danger as she tries to find the truth.

I love this series. Nicey is a top-notch reporter that gets to the heart of the matter. She also cares about the people she works with including her editor who is trying to be forced into retirement. There is no way she is going to let that happen. She also loves Joey even though she knows nothing of his past and isn’t sure she wants to. Her ex, Kyle, thinks Joey is trouble and does all he can to shake Nicey’s confidence.

This is such a good story. The characters continue to impress me and the plot has a true ripped from the headlines feel. So well written.

Each of the stories in this series has been fantastic but this is the best one yet. I hope we are chasing down another story in our virtual high heels with Nicey soon. Oh, and a little more Joey would be awfully nice too!

Lethal Lifestyles: A Nichelle Clarke Crime Thriller

Wedding bells are ringing at the Richmond Telegraph, and maid of honor Nichelle Clarke is determined to give her friends the perfect fairytale beginning to their happily ever after. So when a corpse crashes rehearsal weekend, Nichelle ditches her wedding coordinator shoes for her crime reporter ones, and a little poking around turns up a big problem: the victim and the groom have a history, and it’s not a pretty one.

Evidence against groom Grant Parker piles up, leaving Nichelle wishing a hostile bridesmaid was still her biggest worry as she tries to fend off Richmond’s favorite TV reporter—and her own scheming publisher. At odds with the cops, her beloved editor, and the ticking clock, Nichelle races to uncover the truth and save the day before this perfect wedding turns into a funeral.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Our star reporter has been bustin’ her tail to give Grant and Mel the wedding of their dreams. We are just one week from the big day when a dead guy is found at the wedding venue right before the rehearsal festivities are about to start, and the dead guy has a connection to the groom. HOLY MANOLOS!! Nicey’s heels hit the ground running as she tries to save the wedding, keep Charlie, her arch nemesis, off the trail, keep her and her boss employed and pull off this wedding on time. Hold on tight, this is one story that will knock your high heels right off.

Why do I love this series so much? The author writes a fantastic mystery filled with drama but filled with humor too. She always tops herself and leaves me wanting more.

Nicey is an unforgettable heroine not only because she is independent, smart, and wears some of the best footwear in the world but because she is a true friend. She will fight for her friends until she gets to the whole truth and she refuses to publish anything sketchy even when the publisher is holding her beautiful feet to the fire. She also tries to hold her temper in the toughest of times. She has integrity and in today’s world, it is sometimes hard to find reporters like her. She has the right connections and because of the woman, she is they will step up to help her whenever they can. Even her ex. She also is learning to listen to her heart just a bit more in this installment too and they made this reader very happy.

LynDee Walker gives us a story the flows quickly with plenty of twists to keep us on our heels. The mystery is complex, the characters continue to evolve and the new characters are memorable and all seem to be hiding something.

This series is best if you start with Front Page Fatality and read the series in order to understand the characters and their history. Also for me each one is better than the last and becomes my new favorite in the series.

Fatal Features: A Nichelle Clarke Crime Thriller Novella
Crime Thriller
5.5 in Series
Setting – Virginia
Severn River Publishing (January 18, 2019)
Print Length: 76 pages
ASIN: B07MQ6QHRJ

Crime reporter Nichelle Clarke prefers chasing headlines to relaxing.

Even injured and on doctor-ordered bed rest.

When her editor offers her a feature assignment thinking that will silence her requests to return to work early, Nichelle jumps at it. Her editor sends reinforcements to keep Nichelle from overdoing it, venturing to an abandoned renaissance fairground to interview a ghost-hunting reality TV show’s producers and staff.

But a fresh dead body and a nearby tragedy leave Nichelle and her friends on their own to figure out who they can trust on the set—and who might be a killer.

Can Nichelle uncover the truth before someone she loves becomes the next victim?

Dollycas’s Thoughts

You can’t keep Nichelle Clarke down. Settling for a feature story until she is cleared to return to work and her crime beat, Nichelle thought it would be an easy day. She has Parker & Mel tagging along, her editors idea not hers. But soon after she arrives at the isolated set for a ghost-hunting reality show she finds a dead body. She doesn’t know who on the crew to trust but fears that if she doesn’t catch the killer she and her friends could be the next victims.

Even limited to just 76 pages LynDee Walker writes a story that packs a punch. The pages flew with twists and turns. It wasn’t long until we reached the exciting climax and I was stunned by the culprit and sad because I wanted more Nichelle.

A wonderful short story to whet our appetites as we wait for the next full-length feature with Nichelle Clarke, our high heeled heroine.

ISBN-13: 978-1790580569

Two dead girls.
One determined Texas Ranger.
Three horrifying truths.

After a series of murders, newly-minted Texas Ranger Faith McClellan races to unmask a killer lurking in one of Austin’s most sacred institutions. But the insidious truth at the heart of this case is darker than she ever imagined.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Tenley Andre had her whole life ahead of her. She was a star athlete and a great student. Then her body is found at the bottom of a cliff at Lake Travis. Her death is quickly ruled a suicide but Faith McClellan doesn’t think so. Faith is the newest Texas Ranger and still is being treated with kid gloves. She hopes solving this case will show the powers that be that she has earned her spot and not floating in on her father’s coattails. Teaming up with her former partner she tries to hide her investigation until she has real evidence to prove her case. It is when she finds a connection between Tenley’s death and another young woman’s death the gloves come off and some deadly secrets are revealed.

Faith McClellan is a fantastic protagonist. Flawed, real, believable, smart with a photographic memory, great instincts, has life experience that helps her tune into victims and be empathetic while wanting to fight to see justice served.  Being treated like the “new girl”, fetching coffee and running errands was not sitting well with her so she saw an opportunity to prove herself and she took it. This is a woman I can get behind and am thrilled this is the first book in a series and not just a one-off.

The author does an excellent job of introducing both the core characters and those involved in the murder investigation. It was easy to get a clear picture of all of them. What wasn’t clear was who killed the girls and why. This journey we followed with Faith was murky, scary, and intense.  There was a lot of circling back and double checking everything. Twists turned Faith’s thinking inside out. Even with two and three sets of eyes going over the evidence and giving their theories, it was hard to solve.

Having read her Nichelle Clarke series I was already of fan of LynDee Walker. Faith McClellan is a character just like Nichelle that will stick with me. A character you want to root for and know better. The fact the Faith is involved in such a wonderful, suspenseful mystery was just icing on the cake.

This series is off to an excellent start. I am really looking forward to many more adventures with Texas Ranger Faith McClellan.

LETHAL LIFESTYLES large banner640
Lethal Lifestyles
by LynDee Walker

I always get excited when a new Headlines in High Heels Mystery is released
and even more excited when LynDee Walker drops by for a visit!

LynDee headshotAnatomy of a fictional murder:
from inspiration to the bookshelf

by LynDee Walker

It all started with a polo mallet.

I think I can speak for most mystery authors when I say inspiration for murder often comes out of nowhere—and sometimes it has less than ideal timing.

In the spring of 2014, my darling and I were at a gorgeous vineyard nestled against the backdrop of the Blue Ridge mountains in central Virginia, excited to celebrate the wedding of our friends Kyle and Mandy. After the ceremony (it was fantastic: so to the point we all stood for the whole thing), we wandered out to the wide porch behind the property’s main building, enjoying a cocktail reception while the photographer had the happy couple (and their golden retriever, how cute is that?) occupied.

I nodded to the stables in the distance. “They have horses?” I asked a friend more familiar with the vineyard.

“They have a polo match every Sunday afternoon. Y’all should come watch tomorrow, it’s a big event,” he said.

My writer brain clicked into high gear.

“Polo? Like Prince William, sport of kings, actual POLO? In Virginia?” I asked.

lethal lifestylesOur friend nodded.

“How great of a murder weapon would a polo mallet be?” I mused (this isn’t a spoiler, because the story ended up taking a different turn. But it was the catalyst for this whole thing), excusing myself to prowl around the property looking for places to hide a body. Which prompted poor darling to begin an hour long refrain of “she’s not crazy, she writes mysteries,” since we didn’t know everyone there and I was laser-focused on the story developing in my head, chattering to myself about decomposition, smells and physical limitations as I roamed.

By the end of the evening, I was pretty darned excited about a quasi-destination wedding for the Telegraph gang.

COVER SHOTSince this whole thing happened before I’d even written 5,000 words of COVER SHOT, I had a mission pretty early on in that one: one way or another, by the end of the book, somebody was getting engaged.

Parker and Mel turned out to be the perfect choice. We’d reached a point in the story where they’d been serious for about a year, and we knew he was completely gone over her. Of course, Nichelle would get to be maid of honor, because she set them up on their first date way back before BURIED LEADS.

buriedOnce I had that pegged, the whole story fell so neatly into place it was a little scary. I was so excited to dig into this wedding, I didn’t even take much of a break between these books.

Nichelle must always have someone to help, and this time she’s helping her friends out of a mess with stakes higher than the peaks in the Blue Ridge. Plus, I got to bring back some favorite characters from earlier books. As a reader, I love few things more in a series than catching up with old friends, and this was a perfect venue for that. Words poured onto the page.

I loved it. And I’m so proud of this book.

midnight-mysteriesNot long after I finished it, I got an invitation from my wonderful friend Ritter Ames to contribute a Nichelle story to a Halloween-themed anthology—what better way to tie COVER SHOT and LETHAL LIFESTYLES together? Frightening Features appears in the collection MIDNIGHT MYSTERIES, and follows Nichelle (trailed by Parker and Mel) on a trip to the Virginia countryside to write a puff piece on a ghost hunting TV show filming in an abandoned renaissance fairground. Things go sideways when a real corpse turns up on set, and Nichelle and her friends find themselves stuck in the woods with a killer.

Halloween is one of my favorite holidays, so this added to what’s been a fun writing year for me—I so hope it translates into a fun reading getaway for y’all.

Thanks so much for having me, Lori!

Oh and a little more Joey would be awfully nice too!

The coolest little town you’ve never heard of
by LynDee Walker

Cozy mystery: to readers, the words often evoke a specific set of expectations. An amateur sleuth, usually a woman, who is nosy by nature and finds herself in the middle of a murder investigation. She often has an interesting day job, lives in a small town, and has some sort of connection to the police department.

My Headlines in High Heels mystery series fits many of those, but the idyllic village setting was skipped over in favor of my adopted hometown of Richmond, Virginia. I’ve been asked why, and the truth is I can’t say: I love the city, and from the first moment Nichelle popped into my head, she was just there. Richmond was as much a part of the story as her shoes, and I never considered changing that.

But that’s not to say I don’t adore small towns. I grew up in a fairly large city, but in Texa23269349s, you can point a car in any direction and find a charming little burg complete with a square and maybe even a mercantile shop or soda fountain.

My husband and I have a favorite of these, one we discovered by accident on our last weekend getaway before we became parents. I bet you’ve never heard of it, but if you ever make it to Texas Hill Country, put it on your “must go” list: welcome to Gruene (pronounced “Green”), y’all.

Way back in the long long ago before there were children in our house, my darling and I were big fans of the weekend getaway (we still are, but they’re more complicated. And more expensive). Paging through an issue of Southern Living, I found a write-up on a charming little B&B in the Texas Hill Country that featured individual cabins spaced around the property. I called Darling and he said we must go.

So we did. And the place was every bit as charming as the magazine proclaimed it. But the best find was yet to come. As we were exploring the square in the nearby town of Wimberley, a shopkeeper asked if we were planning to eat at the Grist Mill.

She laughed at our blank expressions and gave us directions to the next town over, where we found the biggest restaurant I’ve ever seen. Several stories tall, it’s in an old cotton mill with tables out on the terrace overlooking the Guadalupe River. They have literally hundreds of tables, y’all, and the food is so good they had an hour wait the first night we went. Worth every second. To this day, it’s the best chicken fried steak I’ve ever eaten.

Wandering the square after dinner, we came upon Gruene Hall, which is another of the town’s local claims to fame. Because so many musicians live in the Hill Country, you can often stumble onto a big-name show with a small town feel. The venue is lovely and rustic, and not so large that you’d have trouble seeing the stage from anywhere in the room.

What else can you ask for from a vacation? Lovely location, great accommodations, amazing food, and top notch entertainment. All hidden along the banks of the Guadalupe River in central Texas.

If you go, have a lemonade and some cheesecake for me.

Mickey, Magic, and Malice—a fairy tale vacation

by LynDee Walker

I am a total Disney nerd.

Yep. There, I said it (typed it, anyway).

1660443_10152212257684827_1128681450_nThe movies, the parks—I love it all. We have several pieces of framed Disney artwork in our home, all of which have been here since way before we had children.

It goes back as far as I can remember: the movies were a big part of my childhood. My mom loved them almost as much as I did. But as a single mom with a career and a lot of responsibility, vacations were scarce. I didn’t visit Disney World for the first time until I was married.

My sweet hubby took me for our first anniversary, and I had more fun than any ten children. We’ve been back every 12-24 months since, and it’s still my favorite place in the whole world.

We’ve marked a milestone there with each of our three little ones: they all get a Disney trip for their third birthday. This year, it was my baby girl’s turn to “go to Mickey’s house.”

It turned out to be a dream vacation in just about every way I can imagine—and a few I wouldn’t have dared to.

We got off to an iffy start with a nine-hour flight delay that ate up our first day in the park. But my children—even the three-year-old—were such good babies that day. No less than a dozen other women made a point to tell me so at some point before we finally made it out of Orlando International Airport. Any mom who’s ever had a rough day knows how proud I was of them.

1780668_10152212241829827_1971031158_nWe salvaged the evening and made it to Magic Kingdom for our must-do rides, then rushed to Chef Mickey’s for the baby’s birthday dinner with her favorite mouse.

1511025_10152139073634827_1823945735_nThe next morning kicked off clear and perfect, with sunshine and breakfast with Winnie the Pooh. We rode roller coasters (my little daredevils love anything the height restrictions allow them on) and played and walked off all the amazing food. They hugged their favorite characters. We took photos and made wonderful memories.

And then on Tuesday, a little extra touch made this the Disney trip to top all Disney trips (for me, anyway). A phone call came, in the most perfect time and place, and added the perfect sprinkle of magic.

small town spinLet’s back up a bit: y’all, I’ve wanted to be a writer ever since I can remember. For most of my life, that dream was pretty Lois-Lane-shaped. I loved being a journalist. I was conscious of the fact that people trusted me with their stories, and I worked hard to tell them right.

But when I became a mom, everything changed. Reporting means long, unpredictable hours. Not super-conducive to family life. I’ve never regretted my decision to leave the newsroom, but boy, I missed writing. Then Nichelle and her friends took up residence in my head, and I discovered I could have it both ways. I am a girl blessed.

I can say without reservation that the past year has topped every dream I had about being an author. I am so thankful for each reader who has had fun with Nichelle, and those of you who’ve taken time to let me know that have made my days brighter.

Back to Disney: I never expected this call. Didn’t even dare to dream of such a thing, because so many writers who are far wiser than me, who have been generous enough to give me advice, said it’s easier when you don’t.

FRONT PAGE FATALITYYet there she was, the Agatha Awards committee chair, shouting over the din of the crowded restaurant where I stood that my debut novel had been nominated for best first novel of 2013.

Holy. Cow.

I asked her about 10 times if she was sure she was reading her list correctly. I thanked her. I hung up. And then I burst into tears. After I managed to tell my family that nobody died, we celebrated. With cupcakes (the grey stuff one really is delicious).

1926764_10152212246089827_745451299_nSeriously, y’all—on vacation at my favorite place in the world, surrounded by the people I love most. Standing in the dining room in Belle’s castle—because where is more perfect to receive such news than in the palace of Disney’s bookworm princess? I couldn’t have written it better.

My own personal fairy tale.

I think that’s why I’m such a Disney geek: I am a sucker for a happily ever after.

As a journalist, I saw some of the most horrifying things human beings can do to one another and watched people survive the worst days of their lives. As a mom of three, I have the daily honor of guiding these wonderful little people through the big scary world. I want for them what every mom wants for her little ones: happiness.

I know that’s what my mom wanted most for me, too, and let me assure you: I was pretty darned happy that January Tuesday, riding a roller coaster with my oldest (she’s nine going on 29) and watching her grin when she turned to me and said “that award thing is seriously cool, mommy. I’m so proud of you.”

Heart. Melted.

Thank you all so much for being part of this fabulous year. I’m so, so excited about the launch of the third Headlines in High Heels novel, Small Town Spin, and I hope you have fun following Nichelle to the beach.

Now y’all tell me: what’s your most magical vacation memory?

 ~LynDee

THREE TIMES THE FUN AND MYSTERY…

Elvis has left the building, but he’s forever memorialized at the Heartache Motel. Filled with drag queens, Rock-a-Hula cocktails, and a vibrating velveteen bed, these three novellas tell the tales of three amateur sleuths who spend their holidays at the King’s beloved home.

DINERS KEEPERS, LOSERS WEEPERS by Terri L. Austin
A Rose Strickland Mystery Novella (follows DINER IMPOSSIBLE)

Ma, Rose and Roxy close up the diner and head to Graceland for the holiday. Axton and Stoner Joe come along for the ride. There is a mix up with their hotel reservation and they end up staying at the Heartache Motel, which wouldn’t even rate 1 star.  When one of the Elvis impersonator turns up dead Rose finds herself right in the middle of the investigation.

QUICK SKETCH by Larissa Reinhart
A Cherry Tucker Mystery Novella (prequel to PORTRAIT OF A DEAD GUY)

Cherry and her boyfriend Todd roll into town to help his cousin out of a jam and are staying at the Heartache Motel. Todd is quite the poker player and clearly his cousin is not, as he was hustled out of all his Christmas money and lost his job too. With a little help they set up a “sting” to try to win back the lost money. Cherry is hoping to use her drawing ability to sketch the players to be sure the right players get stung.

DATELINE MEMPHIS by LynDee Walker
A Nichelle Clarke Headline in Heels Mystery Novella (follows BURIED LEADS)

Nichelle is on her way home for Christmas with just a quick stopover in Memphis to get her mom the perfect gift.  But even at Graceland she makes headlines when the whole place is locked down when a treasured item goes missing. As she tries to get the scoop on the story she finds herself getting dangerously close to the thief.

Dollycas’s Thoughts
I thought it would be nice to finish out the year with a little Elvis. He was an icon a little before my time but my sister and mom always had his songs playing. I never got “All Shook Up” about him but his music sure has withstood the test of time.

I had only read LynDee Walker’s Headline in Heels Mysteries before this collection of novellas but I can say these authors have a chart topper with this group of stories.

Terri’s characters really drew me in and I can’t wait to read the whole Rose Strickland Mystery Series.

Larissa’s protagonist reminds me of Sharon Pape’s Rory McCain. Those sketch artists always seem to be able to solve the mystery.

After reviewing LynDee’s Front Page Fatality and Buried Leads, I was already a fan of Nichelle Clark and her wild shoe addiction.

This interconnected format is a great way to introduce every cozy lover to these characters and their stories. The only thing that would have made it better would have been if at least the main characters could have run into each other 🙂  Maybe sometime in the future.

This was a perfect escape for my last book of the year!!

I am so excited to welcome LynDee Walker and her Great Escapes Book Tour here today!!

great escape tour banner large buried leads

LynDee headshotHi LynDee!

Thanks so much for having me on today, Lori! I’m excited to be here!

1.       What was your inspiration for the Headlines in High Heels Mysteries?

The inspiration to write them came from a love of writing, and from missing doing it on a daily basis for a number of years while I juggled my oldest two children.

The inspiration for the stories themselves comes from everywhere. Some of what Nichelle does is inspired by stories I covered as a working reporter, some by current headlines, and some of it just pops into my head from nowhere.

2.       When did you know that you wanted to become an author?

I wanted to be a writer ever since I can remember, but until I became a mom, journalism was always the focus of my dream. After I had children, I discovered I couldn’t go back to the newsroom for a myriad of reasons, including long hours and emotionally draining work.

I think I went without writing for as long as I possibly could—about four and a half years—but once I started writing about Nichelle, I found a new dream. That’s when I decided I wanted to be an author. And this year, becoming a published author has been a amazing dream come true.

3.       What authors do you enjoy?

There are so many! I am a book nerd, and to list all my favorite authors would take way too much space. Laura Levine, Harley Jane Kozak, Stephen King, Agatha Christie, and Harlan Coben are a few of my all-time favorites. I’ve been reading a lot of southern literature lately, and Joshilyn Jackson, Claire Cook, and Gretchen Archer are all on my favorites list.

4.       What are reading for fun right now?

I scored an early ARC of  Hijack in Abstract (A Cherry Tucker Mystery) by Larissa Reinhart, and I’m loving it! It’ll be on sale Nov. 5.

5.       If money was no object and you could escape to anywhere in the world to write where would you go and what do you think the book would be about?

A quiet beach in Australia with surfing, cabana boys, and lots of frosty drinks. And knowing me, I’d write about someone getting murdered at a resort where Nichelle was honeymooning in Australia.

I reviewed LynDee’s first book in the Headlines in Heels Mystery Series, Front Page Fatality on Tuesday. I then jumped right into Buried Leads.  If I wouldn’t have started Great Escapes Book Tours I may not have ever “met” LynDee or found these wonderful stories. Thank you LynDee for stopping by today!!!

She has DATELINE MEMPHIS (novella after BURIED LEADS in Heartache Motel) on sale Dec 2013 and SMALL TOWN SPIN (#3) on sale Spring 2014.  I have already both to my wish list!!
