Kelly Flynn has been enjoying motherhood and avoiding murder, but when a friend’s life is cut short, she enlists the Lambspun knitters to catch a heartless killer in the last Knitting Mystery novel from the New York Times bestselling author of Only Skein Deep.

Kelly is happily busy with her son, Jack, now a rambunctious four-year-old preschooler. Jack keeps his mom on her toes and drinking all the coffee she can handle at Pete’s Porch Café. Kelly’s friendly waitress Julie is hoping to become an accountant. She makes sure she keeps Kelly caffeinated and up-to-date on her career progress.

Kelly splits her free time between Pete’s and Lambspun, where her fellow knitters love hearing all about Jack’s latest exploits. They’ve also been taking a trip down memory lane, reminiscing about crimes that Kelly had a hand in solving over the years. But the Lambspun crew is horrified when a very present-day murder occurs in their midst–and Julie is the victim.

With her sleuthing instincts on full alert, Kelly starts asking questions. The well-liked waitress may have had enemies no one knew about, or she could have just been in the wrong place at the wrong time. Kelly and her friends at Lambspun soon learn that the answers are knottier and more shocking than they ever dreamed…

Kelly Flynn and her boyfriend, Steve, couldn’t be happier as they await the birth of their bouncing baby boy. Kelly’s got a built-in group of fiber arts specialists, the Lambspun Knitters, who are working away on blankets and booties. As they sit around the table crafting their keepsakes, the story of Giselle Callahan is a popular topic of conversation.

Giselle is the young wife of Henry Callahan, a Fort Connor banking scion, who traded in his previous wife of forty years for a newer model. Giselle’s prowess as a skilled country club golfer and social climber puts her on someone’s hit list. When she is found dead on the greens at the golf club, Kelly and her Lambspun crew worry that a vicious killer is in their midst. They must work fast to bring an unhinged murderer to justice on the back nine before Kelly’s very special delivery…

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Followers of this series knew this book was going to be about the birth of Kelly and Steve’s baby. I just wish the author would have presented this story differently.

This story followers Kelly through the last days of her pregnancy. Her daily trip to Pete’s/Lampspun where she either works on her spreadsheets or a cap she is knitting for Baby Jack. Everyone stops by to ask her how she is doing and her response is usually about Jack playing soccer and not ready to come out. She also is not happy that she had to give up her high octane coffee and is not thrilled with any of the teas she has been trying to replace it with. Kelly also attends a few baseball games where she is asked the same questions with the same replies. Her dog Carl is only mentioned a couple of times. I would have loved to read about his reactions to a new little person coming to his house. Maybe that will be in the next book.

There were also three things about weddings that really upset me, but I will not say more so I don’t spoil the story for anyone else.

While there is a murder on the golf course, it really wasn’t a mystery to solve. During Kelly’s daily stops she checks in with Burt to see if his police contact has any leads. She hears a few things that she passes along to Burt. I had this one solved very early in the story. The big reveal comes again when she is at Lambspun while talking to someone who saw something relevant.

Don’t get me wrong I don’t expect a woman in the ninth month of a pregnancy to be trying to chase down a killer, but she could have done a little legwork on the case. Most women with a pregnancy as easy as Kelly’s work right up to the baby is born. All her friends treated her like she was an invalid. Running errands was just too much for her, really??? She is a healthy woman who is pregnant. She was doing daily exercises. I have been there 4 times. I am glad her friends were looking out for her but most of it was pretty over the top.

I love these characters, this theme, and this setting but I didn’t like this story. There was way too much repetition. I found myself skimming instead of reading until the last couple chapters. The last book in the series was more character driven too with a little mystery on the side. The next book is Dyeing Up Loose Ends. That has me wondering if it will be the last book in this series. It will be hard for Kelly to investigate murders with a baby/toddler in tow. The synopsis says “Kelly splits her free time between Pete’s and Lambspun, where her fellow knitters love hearing all about Jack’s latest exploits. They’ve also been taking a trip down memory lane, reminiscing about crimes that Kelly had a hand in solving over the years.” But it also mentions a murder, so I hope it is one we can sink our teeth into.

So all and all this story was a miss for me but I did enjoy catching up with the characters. The first three and the last three chapters saved the book from getting a 2-star – a dreadful detour – rating.

I do not recommend reading this book on its own because it does not show you what a talented storyteller Maggie Sefton is. Start at the beginning and get to know these characters. You will love them.

Knit to Be Tied (A Knitting Mystery)
Cozy Mystery
14th in Series
Setting – Colorado
A Berkley Prime Crime Mystery (June 7, 2016)
An Imprint of Penguin Random House LLC
Hardcover: 288 pages
ISBN-13: 978-0425282502
Kindle ASIN: B016JPTMSU

In Fort Connor, Colorado, the friends at the House of Lambspun knitting shop are welcoming a new face into the fold. Shy, sweet, and pregnant Nancy Marsted would like to knit a baby hat, and the Lambspun ladies are more than happy to show her the ropes. They share their own pregnancy yarns and soon learn the father of Nancy’s baby isn’t quite the man she dreamed he was. He’s a cad.

Then one dark night a speeding car fatally mows down the dad-to-be and strikes a cyclist, spinning the town into a frenzy. Everyone worries that a crazed killer is on the loose. Now it’s up to Kelly and the gang to put down their needles and cut to the chase before the culprit is driven to kill again . . .

Dollycas’s  Thoughts

I have  enjoyed this series from the start. Each trip to Fort Connor is like going off to visit friends. Kelly spends much of her days at the House of Lambspun, working on her accounts or knitting on the garden patio or at the large gathering table inside the shop. She meets her friends there and then plan get togethers and touch base on what each of them are dealing with. Sometimes it’s work or kids or baseball games. This time one of her friends is a victim of a hit and run while on his bicycle. He is terribly injured and facing weeks of rehab, and they have no idea who was driving the car. But Kelly with some assistance from Burt is knitting together the clues pretty rapidly.

I found Knit to Be Tied as more of a character driven story. The mystery was more of a subplot with only a couple of suspects and readers will figure it out pretty easily. That being said I did enjoy this story because of the investment I have put into these characters for 14 books. I want to know what they are doing, what is happening in their lives. There are some big things happening  for this group of friends. They have grown so much over the years. And the author gives us awesome news at the end of the story that has me very excited for book 15.

This was a story that catches us up on the Lambspun gang and sets us up for the next one. Sometimes long running series need books like this one.

A comfortable read, cozy mystery lite 🙂

Tea Time With The Cozy Chicks
(Cozy Chicks Kitchen series)
(Volume 2)
Self Published – October 6, 2015
Paperback: 228 pages
ISBN-13: 978-1517385781
E-Book ASIN: B014OE31SA

The Cozy Chicks realized that tea was such a perfect complement to cozy mysteries that we decided to write a book about it. Not only does Tea Time with the Cozy Chicks have delicious recipes, but it also includes themed tea menus, fascinating articles, fun facts, curious quotes, and helpful hints on how to host the most memorable tea parties ever! And for an extra treat, a few of us have included excerpts of our work as well! Read, cook, drink tea, savor, and most of all enjoy!

guest post

Tea parties have been around for well over 3,000 years. People on all parts of the earth have tea parties every day. So sit down, pour yourself a cup of tea, and let me tell you about Tea Time With the Cozy Chicks.

First of all who are the Cozy Chicks? If you haven’t visited our blog before, please pop by http://www.cozychicksblog.com. It’s a great way to get to know us and to catch a glimpse at the crazy life of a mystery writer. The Cozy Chicks are…Ellery Adams, Lorraine Bartlett, Duffy Brown, Kate Collins, Mary Kennedy, Mary Jane Maffini, Maggie Sefton, Leann Sweeney.

We write cozy mysteries and in our books characters often gather around the table to discuss cases. They drink a staggering amount of caffeinated beverages and seem to be surrounded by an endless array of mouth-watering sandwiches, cookies, pastries, and chocolate. In short, these gals in our books have a pretty good time…unless theyre chasing the killer…and we thought it would be fun to spend a little time in their world.

The result is Tea Time With The Cozy Chicks filled with the lore of tea in so many of its incarnations. The book offers an assortment of tea parties like how to have a Bon Voyage tea, bachelorette tea, proper Yorkshire Tea, Chocolate Lovers tea etc. There are menus for each party, invitation suggestions, decorations, flowers, table settings, recipes galore and all hosted by characters from our books to add to the fun.

An afternoon tea party is suitable for many celebrations and isn’t as involved as a dinner party. Often a tea party can be the answer to friends just getting together. It’s an ideal format for a simple elegant party where the food is prepared before your guests arrive and is either presented buffet style, or by passing plates of goodies at the table. The best thing about a tea party is that the only thing you need to serve is the tea itself, leaving you plenty of time to relax and enjoy your guests.

There is more in Tea Time With the Cozy Chicks than just tea parties. There are ideas on tea paring, tea towels, antique teapots and cups, reading tea leaves and the book gives favorite tearooms that we’ve discovered. These are tearooms that Duffy Brown came across in Savannah and on Mackinac Island. These tearooms are filled with charm and delicious tea, pastries and delicious sandwiches and are just for you here and not included in the book.

maggie sefton 2WRITING TEENAGERS by Maggie Sefton

If you’ve been reading the Kelly Flynn Knitting Mysteries, then you’ve discovered that I’ve introduced several teenaged characters in the books on different occasions. Most recently, in CLOSE KNIT KILLER, I introduced a young twelve year old, about-to-be teenager, Cassie Wainwright, café-owner Pete’s niece, who joined the cast. Cassie has gone on to become a cast regular in YARN OVER MURDER. Cuyarn over murderrt Stackhouse’s grandson, Eric, also joined the cast in that book. Cassie and Eric—both now fourteen years old—will be in this year’s June 1015 release, PURL UP AND DIE.

Like all my characters, Cassie simply “walked onstage” one day, and I knew she was meant to be in the Kelly Flynn books. That’s the way it works with my characters. They don’t ask, they simply show up and demand to be on the page. Actually, I had a hint of Cassie a couple of years before she showed up. She didn’t have a name or any description then, but she was simply “out there” in the sky, circling. All I knew was she’s a teenaged girl. I was delighted when the character Cassie finally showed up and turned out to be a delight.

Here’s an excerpt from this June’s release, PURL UP AND DIE

Glancing around her small table beside a window in Pete’s café, Kelly noticed Cassie clearing tables close by. “Hi, Cassie. How’d you guys play against Wellington last night?”

Cassie looked over at Kelly and broke into a big smile. “Oh, we beat ‘em. Beat ‘em bad,” she bragged. “I hit a triple!”

Kelly laughed softly at the sound of young teenage exuberance. “That’s great. Steve and I were both working in Denver so we couldn’t see the game.”

“We’re playing Longmont tomorrow, Saturday morning at Rolland Moore Park.” Cassie gave the table a thorough wipe. “Where are you guys playing?”

“Steve’s playing a morning game at Rolland Moore, and my team will play in the afternoon game at City Park ball field. So I’ll definitely purl up and diebe able to catch your game. I’ll just hop between fields at Rolland Moore.”

Cassie emptied another table of dirty dishes onto her tray. “I love City Park. It is so pretty. I hope we play more games there. All those tall trees. Pete says they’re oak trees, and they’re really going to be pretty in the Fall.” She wiped this table then lifted the trayful of dishes.

“Can you carry all that?” Kelly asked, pointing to the tray. “It looks pretty heavy.”

“Oh, sure,” Cassie said. “Funny, but it doesn’t feel that heavy anymore. I remember last summer I couldn’t carry a tray like this, the way Jennifer and Julie do.” She shrugged. “I guess I’m stronger now.”

“That’s because you’ve had two summers and a fall worth of batting practice,” Kelly said with a grin. “You worked hard with the ball machine. You’re batting really well now because you’ve gotten stronger. Funny how that works together. No wonder you hit a triple.”

“Do you think I can ever hit a homer like you do?”

“Sure, you will. In time. You’ve got a lot more growing to do. Look how much you’ve grown in little over a year since you’ve been here. Must be three inches.”

“Three and a half,” Cassie corrected, wide smile lighting her deep blue eyes.

“Three and a half. And I predict you’ll probably grow another inch before this year is over.”

Cassie’s eyes popped wide. “You think so! Awesome! I hope you’re right.”
“Your legs have gotten a lot longer, too. That’s why you can run so fast. You run almost as fast as I do, I think.”
“No way!” Cassie scoffed.
“Oh, yeah. You’re like a jack rabbit racing around those bases.”

Cassie gave a giggling laugh that made Kelly laugh just hearing it. “Jack rabbit. I love it. I gotta tell Eric.”

“Well, you can tell him that he looks like a really tall, skinny jack rabbit. And he runs even faster.”

“He’ll love that,” Cassie said, shifting the tray. “Talk to you later, Kelly.”

“If it’s Friday, then you’re going with Lisa to the Sports Clinic. Bring back some of Lisa’s PT secrets, okay?”

“Lisa’s secret is she’s got magic hands,” Cassie said as she headed toward the kitchen area.

Magic hands, huh? Kelly recalled how skilled Lisa had been when she helped Kelly recuperate from a broken ankle years ago. Cassie was one smart kid, she thought, as she pulled her laptop from the briefcase bag.

In the latest novel from the New York Times bestselling author of Yarn Over Murder, Kelly Flynn and the Lambspun Knitters must unravel the truth from the lies to clear a friend’s son suspected of murder…

Kelly Flynn’s summer in Fort Connor, Colorado, is off to a great start with romantic celebrations with her boyfriend, Steve, and enjoyable—albeit challenging—knitting classes taught by her friend Barb at the House of Lambspun. But while Barb’s advanced stitches are giving Kelly the slip, a more deadly problem soon has her friend coming apart at the seams.

A young woman has accused Barb’s son, Tommy—a young doctor doing his residency—of assaulting her. The yarns spun by the local rumor mill are bad enough, but when the young woman is found dead in her ransacked apartment, Tommy becomes the number one suspect.

The police are ready to close the case, but Kelly is convinced that there are a few more likely suspects. Now she has to knit together the clues herself to uncover a killer who doesn’t seem to drop a stitch…

Dollycas’s Thoughts

We return to Fort Connor, Colorado and the House of Lambspun Yarn Shop for the 13th installment of this cozy mystery series. Kelly Flynn, is an accountant and she does her best work while sitting at the big table in the middle of the yarn shop with a big cup of coffee from Pete’s Porch Cafe. It is also the place she catches up on what is happening in town and where she meets Burt Parker, a retired police officer with all the right connections at the local police department. Kelly and Burt have solved several murders by putting their heads together and keeping their ears open.

This time the case touches close to home. Barb, who teaches classes at Lambspun, is so proud of her son. Tommy is a doctor completing his residency at the local ER. She talks about him all the time, singing his praises. He has a bright future until a local co-ed accuses him of sexual assault. When she is found dead a few days later Tommy becomes the prime suspect. Kelly and Burt with the help of a few friends are on mission, spinning clues upside down and inside out, to find the truth and catch the real killer.

I do love this series. The friendship all of the recurring characters is what makes these stories great. Whether they are getting together at the cafe or the yarn shop or at the baseball fields they are there to help and support each other through things like a huge canyon wildfire or bending the rules a little to get information to help solve the latest mystery. They have each others’ back and can count on each other no matter what.

This time the author knits together quite a mystery. I did figure it out a bit before Kelly and Burt but I was second guessing myself a time or two thanks to a few clever twists. She also describes everything so well. There are times where I could almost feel the yarn between my fingers and smell the mountain air.

Kelly and Steve’s romance is proceeding nicely and the feud between Kelly’s dog, Carl, and the Brazen Squirrel continues. Both will put a smile on your face.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

The author left us with quite a cliffhanger in Close Knit Killer so I couldn’t wait to read this book and she didn’t disappoint. This was story was quite exciting. Maggie Sefton drew on the actual wildfires in Colorado back in 2012 and created a very engaging mystery. There were more than a few nail biting moments, most with the fire but with tracking down the murderer too.

I really love the friendship the blooms in every one of these Knitting Mysteries. Cassie has been brought right into the fold and has quickly become part of the Lambspun family. I have to say Burt, the retired police detective and Lambspun “spinner in residence” was everywhere in this story. He was running between all the shelters making sure people displaced by the fires had everything they needed. He also was the go-between for Kelly and Dan, the local police officer on the case, and he still taught his spinning classes at Lambspun. I wish I had half of his energy.  All the rest of the gang was there too doing what they could, whether it be feeding the firefighters or knitting things to replace clothes lost in the fires. They were also doing all they could to help Connie.

I have enjoyed each and every visit to Fort Connor, Colorado and can’t wait to return next year to see what Kelly and the gang get tangled up in next. Yarn Over Murder is Smokin’ Hot!!!

Molly Malone and Samantha Calhoun have been friends since their fathers were Senators. They know Washington D.C. inside and out. Molly now manages the financial affairs of Senator Russell. Samantha is busy managing her own “affairs”. When her latest fling, married U.S. Rep. Quentin Wilson, is found dead in Samantha’s home, she quickly turns to her best friend, Molly.

Using some her Washington connections Molly finds out that Wilson was researching some of the same things that may have gotten her niece killed. (Deadly Politics – Book 1 in this series.) Molly puts her own life in danger as she tries to reconcile how this death may be connected to the death of her niece.

Dollycas’s Thoughts
I loved the first book in this series. It set the perfect foundation. Washington D.C. is full of possible stories. Molly is a wonderful character, smart and determined.

In this installment Molly again uses the resources she has to try to help her best friend. I was so glad Dangerous Dan was in town to help her but also so their romance could start to bloom and blossom.  We have just scratched the surface of this guy’s story. Eleanor is also a very interesting character. She has known Molly and Sam since they were girls and really has their best interests at heart. She is also a powerful woman in Washington.

The story really drew me in. It was exciting and suspenseful. With this series Maggie Sefton sets aside the cozy for a little more thrill and tension and she does that extremely well. The pages were flying.

I did have one huge problem though. This story ended very suddenly with a cliffhanger. Things were just starting to fall into place and that was it. We had several pieces to the puzzle but not all we needed to solve the case. It is like when a television series ends in the Spring and you have to wait until the Fall to see what happens. Only in this case with the previous book coming out last August and this one a year later, that seems to mean we will not have a chance of resolution until August 2014. Then she may leave readers hanging again. I hate the waiting but it will sure create a buzz about this series! I just want the next book right now 🙂 please.
