Synopsis:

You can’t tiptoe when murder’s afoot…

It’s Bastille Day in Paris. The Happy Hoofers—Tina, Janice, Pat, Mary Louise, and Gini—are all set to kick off the fete by dancing the cancan on a beautiful sightseeing cruise down the Seine. As the leggy ladies soak in the magic of the city of lights, everything is magnifique…until a very important patron goes belly-up on the top deck.

On the heels of their French debut, murder takes center stage. The five daring dancers will need to step lively to stop the crafty killer fast…or their grand finale will turn out far more explosive than the fireworks over the Eiffel Tower…

Dollycas’s Thoughts

I want to be a Happy Hoofer! They travel to awesome places and dance. Sometimes they tap their way right into a bunch of trouble but they always seem to shuffle their way out!

If you haven’t met the Happy Hoofers they are a group of friends that love to dance.

  • Tina is leader of the group. She keeps everything organized. She is the Travel Editor at Perfect Bride magazine.
  • Janice is an actress and director in community theater. She is divorced with a daughter in college.
  • Pat is a family therapist and the mother hen of the group.
  • Mary Louise and Tina have been friends for over 30 years. She has 3 children and a very trying husband named George.
  • Gini is a redhead with a temper to match. She is a documentary filmmaker and while making a film in India fell in love with a little girl she hopes to adopt.

Janice narrates the story this time. The girls are in Paris and are booked to perform for a week on the Bateau Mouche, a touristy sightseeing boat that travels down the Seine.  At the end of their first night passengers are guided to the top deck of the ship to see the Bastille Day fireworks but what they find is a dead body. This is not the first murder the Hoofers have found. They have become pretty well versed in police investigations and they can’t stop themselves from doing a bit of investigating on their own. They are going to have to kick up more than their heels to catch this killer.

This is the second book I have read recently that takes place in Paris. Mary McHugh does an excellent job or describing the “City of Light”. The dancers are staying in a rented apartment and their schedule leaves them plenty of time to see the famous landmarks and partake in some of the culinary delights from places around the city.  They even take a trip to Versailles castle and gardens.  I would really love to actually visit Paris someday. For now I have to settle for these virtual trips.

The mystery is fun too. Following the clues right along with the ladies. I figured it out a bit before them and I wish I could have let them know because one of them gets themselves into quite a pickle. The story wraps up almost too quickly for me though. I liked the way it played out but a few more pages of danger would have really added to the suspense level.

A very entertaining read with some tempting recipes and some amusing travel tips are included throughout the book.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Gini narrates this time and she a force to be reckoned with. She has a hard time holding her tongue and that lands her on the suspect list.

I like these stories because these woman are my age and I wish I could be traveling right along with them. I am mystery fan so even the dead bodies wouldn’t both me too much….yeah right…well I would hope I could help them sleuth out the killer.

Set on a train traveling through Green Spain sounds just spectacular except when a murder means the passengers are stuck on the train instead of seeing the sights. The Happy Hoofers have made friends with certain people though that allows them to travel to some local tourist attractions and restaurants, but they are usually quick secret excursions.

This is basically a closed mystery meaning the killer has to be someone on the train even though it makes several stops. Even in the close quarters these ladies find a way to snoop and eavesdropping is pretty easy with everyone so close together. There are more than a few twists before the true culprit is revealed and I was thrilled that I was on the right track.

I did enjoy the disabled passenger on the train. Their experience mirrored mine about life in a wheelchair and they offered some great insight.

Mary McHugh has penned a very humorous mystery with a key emphasis on friendship. There is a bit of romance too. Love always seems to bloom when people travel. The recipes are great too!

This can be read as a stand alone but recommend starting at the beginning with Chorus Lines, Caviar, and Corpses. They are quick entertaining reads and a great way to spend an afternoon.

We don’t have long to wait for our next vacation with the Happy Hoofers. We head to France with Cancans, Croissants, and Caskets August 25.

There’s no pussy-footing around murder . . .

It’s never too late to kick up your heels. Just ask Tina, Janice, Pat, Mary Louise, and Gini–aka the Happy Hoofers. After posting a video of their tap-dancing routine on the Internet, the leggy ladies find themselves booked to perform on a Russian river cruise up the Volga from Moscow to St. Petersburg.

But when murder cuts in, the five fabulous friends find it’s not so easy to tap their troubles away. A crew member has been killed, and a passenger is missing. With a killer on board, the Hoofers need to watch their step. But with a little fancy footwork, these soft-shoe sleuths may get a leg up on a killer who’s cruising for a bruising. . .

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Meet the Happy Hoofers:

  • Tina is leader of the group. She keeps everything organized. She is the Travel Editor at Perfect Bride magazine.
  • Janice is an actress and director in community theater. She is divorced with a daughter in college.
  • Pat is a family therapist and the mother hen of the group.
  • Mary Louise and Tina have been friends for over 30 years. She has 3 children and a very trying husband named George.
  • Gini is a redhead with a temper to match. She is a documentary filmmaker and while making a film in India fell in love with a little girl she hopes to adopt.

They are “all different, all great looking, and fierce friends forever.” They also all love to tap dance. What started out as exercise to keep their 50-something bodies in shape has taken off and landed them a gig on a Russian Cruise as the headline entertainment. Let’s just say it is quite an adventure with a drill sergeant like cruise director, a British chef who can’t cook worth a darn, and accommodations built for extremely small individuals. When the chef ends up dead no one is really surprised but is bad food something that would drive someone to commit murder?

Mary McHugh has penned quite a mystery. Unlike other cozy mysteries the Happy Hoofers really do not do much investigating they just seem to find themselves in dangerous situations that force them to stick together. When they get separated bad things happen.

The Hoofers meet some interesting people cruising up the Volga. Some that are sure to appear in upcoming stories.

They visit some beautiful places in Russia but learn quickly they have arrived at the wrong time of year. This tour company needs to use Tina to help them organize things.  If I went on a cruise like this it would be my last cruise. It was pretty bad before any of the corpses showed up. The Happy Hoofers were definitely the best thing about the whole adventure.

Put on your dancing shoes and get ready to tap your toes with these ladies Moscow to St. Petersburg. This is a great start for this series.
