Jenny Weston moves home to Bear Falls, Michigan, to nurse her bruised ego back to health after a bitter divorce. But the idyllic vision of her charming hometown crumbles when her mother’s Little Library is destroyed.

The next-door neighbor, Zoe Zola, a little person and Lewis Carroll enthusiast, suspects local curmudgeon Adam Cane, but when he’s found dead in Zoe’s fairy garden, all roads lead back to her. Jenny, however, believes Zoe is innocent, so the two women team up to find the true culprit, investigating the richest family in Bear Falls, interrogating a few odd townspeople, and delving into long, hidden transgressions–until Adam Cane isn’t the only body in town, and they have an even bigger mystery to solve.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

This story was an absolute treasure.

Jenny Weston reeling from an awful divorce arrived back home in Bear Falls to find her mother’s Little Library has been chopped to bits and books have have been ripped apart. The Little Library was built by Jenny’s dad for his librarian wife because little Bear Falls doesn’t have a public library and she wanted to share her joy of reading. He built it to look like just like their home and put it up shortly before he was killed in a car accident.

The first person Jenny meets is Zoe Zola who she finds lamenting about the Little Library’s destruction. Zoe just happens to be an author herself, a Lewis Carroll enthusiast, and a little person, who takes a bit of getting used to. She thinks she knows who did the dastardly deed but when the man is found dead and Zoe becomes the prime suspect, all thoughts turn to proving her innocence. Things continue to roll out of control as another man is found murdered and so many more questions arise.

I started reading this book and could not put it down. I loved the uniqueness of Zoe. She may be of small stature but she has a huge heart and a very uplifting point of view and special way of thinking. Jenny’s mom has a good friend in Zoe and as the book continued Jenny and she were quickly becoming “almost friends”.

I enjoyed the small town setting and the way the residents pulled together to help Jenny’s mother, Dora, replace her loss. It was interesting the Jenny reconnecting with high school friends she really didn’t want to and found her life was better having left town when she did.  She also meets someone new in town that just may help her start to heal her aching heart.

The drama was multifaceted as well. The main plot and subplots blended perfectly. They are complex, curious, and at times comical.

The best part of the whole thing was the author’s writing style. At times I felt like we were going down the rabbit hole ourselves and it was such a fun adventure. Words, words, words, suitcase words, words that need to be unpacked and understood and that would lead you to the answers you seek or they could lead you nowhere, but totally entertaining.

Loved, Loved, Loved, this story!! It is fresh and different! Alice in Wonderland fans, this is a book for you!

Fudge shop owner Allie McMurphy is making fudgie treats for the annual yacht race–but a killer’s stirring up a batch of trouble. . .

Sailing Into Murder

The annual yacht race off the coast of Mackinac Island, Michigan, is a highlight of the summer season, and Allie is pulling out all the stops making chocolate centerpieces for the occasion. Unfortunately, she and her bichonpoo, Mal, also pull a dead body from the murky waters of the marina. When Allie’s boyfriend’s sister becomes the prime suspect, Allie dives into investigating the murder herself. Amid bitter feuds and hushed-up scandals, the courageous candymaker quickly gets in over her head. Someone is trying to fudge the facts to keep a secret worth killing for. . .

Dollycas’s Thoughts

We are back on Mackinac Island for the annual yacht race celebration. This brings tourists to the place in droves but one thing that could drive them away is a dead body. That is just what Mal, Allie’s pup finds on their early morning walk. When the body is identified Trent’s sister becomes the prime suspect and his family completely shuts Allie out. That is no way to keep at relationship going. She wants to be there for him and his sister. So this fudge maker extraordinaire decided to do some investigating of her own. But she also is dipping herself into trouble.

I so enjoy my trips to Mackinac Island with Allie, Jenn, Frances, Mr. Devaney, Trent, Shane, and all the rest of its residents. All the characters are very relateable and there is always something happening at the McMurphy Hotel and Fudge Shop. The whole gang is so dedicated in growing the business and helping the island to shine.

This time we meet several new characters from the yacht club for all the festivities. Allie also visits the Senior Citizen Center for information for not only her investigation but for another surprise.

The main plot and subplots flow as smooth a newly made fudge onto that cool slab of marble. Just like the nuts and fruit Allie adds to her fudge, Nancy Coco blends twists and surprises into her mystery. She writes in a very descriptive way that bring people, places and situations to life.

Take my word for it, you will want to have some fudge on hand while reading this story. Thankfully there are recipes included throughout the book.

I call this a perfect summer read. Sit back, relax and enjoy a literary escape to Mackinac Island.

Creating Cranberry Cove

How did I create the town of Cranberry Cove for my Cranberry Cove Series? I took inspiration from a number of charming small towns sprinkled up and down the eastern shore of Lake Michigan—Saugatuck, Holland, South Haven, Grand Haven and more.

Each is unique in its own way. Saugatuck is home to a very lively art scene and is also the locale for the annual Waterfront Film Festival. Movies are shown wherever a spot can be found to set up a movie screen—makeshift theaters with folding chairs for seats. The downtown area is filled with small shops and art galleries.

BERRY THE HATCHETHolland is known for its Tulip Time Festival complete with dancers in native Dutch costumes and, you guessed it, tulips! Millions of them in every color imaginable. Along Tulip Lanes there are 200,000 tulips, on Windmill Island you’ll find another 100,000 and at the Veldheer Tulip Garden there are five million in bloom! The downtown area boasts many unique shops as well as restaurants.

Grand Haven is the location of the annual Coast Guard Festival when you can tour various Coast Guard vessels, and the children can enjoy the amusement rides.

South Haven has a lively downtown area with shops and restaurants galore. And right outside of town is the DeGrandchamps Farm cranberry bogs. One weekend in early October they open to the public and you can watch a cranberry harvest in process—a spectacular sight!

I’ve tried to take a little bit from each town and sprinkle on charm for my fictional town of Cranberry Cove, located somewhere along the eastern shore of Lake Michigan.

Berry the Hatchet is the second book in the series. I hope you will enjoy your vicarious trip to Lake Michigan!

Mystery writing lets Peg indulge her curiosity under the guise of “work” (aka research). As a kid, she read the entire set of children’s encyclopedias her parents gave her and has been known to read the dictionary. She switched to mysteries when she discovered the perfect hiding place for a body down the street from her house.

When she’s not writing, she spends her time reading, cooking, spoiling her granddaughter and checking her book’s stats on Amazon.

A former Jersey girl, Peg now resides in Michigan with her husband and Westhighland white terrier, Reg. She is the author of the Sweet Nothings Lingerie series (written as Meg London), the Gourmet De-Lite series, the Lucille series and now the Cranberry Cove series. Cranberry farm owner Monica Albertson is once again bogged down in murder in the second Cranberry Cove mystery from national bestselling author Peg Cochran.

The entire town of Cranberry Cove is popping with excitement. Monica Albertson is baking cranberry goodies by the dozen and shopkeepers are decking out their storefronts for the first annual Winter Walk—an event dreamed up by the mayor to bring visitors to the town during a normally dead time of year.

But it’s the mayor who turns up dead during the grand opening ceremony, his lifeless body making its entrance in a horse-drawn sleigh. Monica’s mother and stepmother quickly become the prime suspects when it’s discovered that the mayor was dating both of them, and to make things worse, her half brother Jeff uncovers a clue buried near one of the bogs on Sassamanash Farm. Now it’s up to Monica to find out who really put the mayor on ice.

INCLUDES CRANBERRY RECIPES

Dollycas’s Thoughts

I ate this mystery right up!

We are back in Cranberry Cove just in time for the Winter Walk. The mayor had this grand idea to bring tourists to town during the off season. Sadly he didn’t get to see the fruits of his labor. As the parade is ready to start the horse drawn sleigh carrying him takes off. When the horses are reined in the mayor’s body is found. In a unique twist both Monica’s mother and step mother are at the top of the list of suspects. It doesn’t help that a key piece of evidence is found on the family’s cranberry farm. Monica finds herself trying to clear both women of the crime, landing herself right in the killer’s sites.

You wouldn’t think there would be much to be done to a cranberry bog in the winter but there is plenty to keep Monica’s brother Jeff busy. Monica is baking everyday, the farm store is still open and she is selling things at the Winter Walk as well. When her mother makes a surprise visit and there are no rooms available at the motel or B&B’s Monica finds herself with a house guest. She has been getting along with her stepmother but her mother’s visit may mess up that relationship.

This was a fast paced mystery. The story never gets “bogged down”, the pages were turning pretty rapidly as we reached the climatic end.

I really like these characters. They are engaging and believable. I love the relationship Monica has with Detective Stevens. They actually share information. Having both her stepmom and mom in town could really have gone wrong but the author really wrote the story is a wonderful way, even when another visitor came to town.

This is another delightful cozy from Peg Cochran. She even makes winter in Michigan sound like fun, with the wind blowing and the chill in the air.  Bundle up and enjoy this trip to Cranberry Cove.

Former cop and novice psychic Clyde Fortune finds herself in a race for justice when a Zombie Fun Run turns deadly…

All of Crystal Haven, Michigan, is psyching up to participate in a Zombie Fun Run organized by Clyde’s nephew Seth, but Clyde is fretful about the undead festivities. For one thing, her sister, Grace, has unexpectedly returned to town after fifteen years. For another, Clyde has the nagging feeling that something is about to go wrong…

When one of the zombie runners is found murdered and then Grace disappears, Clyde realizes her grim premonition is dead-on. Now, she and her police detective boyfriend Mac must find a ghoulish murderer before someone points the finger at Grace. And when a tangled web of family secrets and old grudges combines with a mysterious case of stolen diamonds, even someone as quick-witted as Clyde might not be able to outrun a killer…

Dollycas’s Thoughts

We have come a long way with these characters and in this installment Clyde’s sister, Grace, and her husband, Paul, come to Crystal Haven for a visit. This is the first time in fifteen years that Grace has returned. She didn’t want anything to do with the psychic abilities of her family even though she has an ability herself that she uses daily. That ability may be why she has come home. Of course, seeing her son Seth, is always a bonus.

They quickly get caught up in a town celebration that includes a Zombie Fun Fun. This is the 2nd book I have read recently that has included a zombie event in a town celebration. Zombies aren’t really my thing but since these were costume events and no actual zombies were featured so I enjoyed it quite a bit.

When the fun run ends, the partying begins for all but one of the participants. One of the runners didn’t show up at the party and was found murdered in the woods. Grace has only been in town a couple of days and someone decides she or Paul could be the murderer/s. With Mac on the police department Clyde knows he will prove their innocence, but it doesn’t stop her for doing a little investigating too.

This story is absolutely fantastic! So much happens within these pages and I don’t want to give anything away.

Dawn Eastman has written a very captivating mystery featuring the characters we have grown to love. I have my reservations about Grace and Paul but their situation is pretty precarious so that may tilt the scales more in their favor. Clyde’s family is a little over the top. I love Aunt Vi. Sometimes I want to hug her and other times I want to lock her in the basement and throw away the key. Mac handles her much better than I ever could. The Fortune Family is not your normal Midwest family but Mac loves Clyde so her family and all their shenanigans are part of the package. Yes, even when they find a dead body or try to find some “lost” diamonds.

The paranormal aspect was a little more present in this story as Clyde tries to refine her gift. It has become more interesting as she learns her capabilities.

Each of these stories is even better than the last. This is one of my favorite books I have read this year. I highly recommend the entire series.

Synopsis

Mary MacDougall’s first case of 1902 seems simple enough.

Just before the 19-year-old heiress leaves for a summer holiday on Mackinac Island with her Aunt Christena, she’s hired to stop in a little town along the way and make inquiries. Did Agnes Olcott really die there of cholera? Or were there darker doings in Dillmont?

Mary’s mentor, Detective Sauer, thinks it’s merely a case of bad luck for the dead woman. But Mrs. Olcott’s daughter suspects her detested stepfather played a hand in her mother’s untimely death.

With the reluctant help of her aunt and her dear friend Edmond Roy, the young detective struggles to reveal the true fate of Agnes Olcott. As she digs ever deeper, the enemy Mary provokes could spell disaster for herself and the people she loves. But in the end, it’s the only way to banish a daughter’s doubt.

Dollycas’s Thoughts
Having read the first two installments of this series last month I was anxious to read this one. Just as expected it is a superb story.

Detective Sauer gives Mary her first case. When he hears she is going to Mackinac Island he asks her to find details about a woman who died in Dillmont, a small town on the route to the island. Agnes Olcott died while traveling with her new husband but her daughter doesn’t believe her mother died of cholera as she has been told. She thinks her stepfather had something to do with her death. Sauer has asked Mary to investigate a little and see if there is more to the story. What she finds out will have you glued to this pages.

Richard Audry has created a super strong main and supporting characters. Mary MacDougal is just 19 years old but she is very independent and knows what she wants for her life. Other women her age are getting married and having children. She wants to be a detective. Her millionaire father is not happy about this choice. Her Aunt Christena, another very strong woman, is single and travels the world. Mary and Tena are very close and they often travel together. They have planned to spend several weeks on Mackinac Island. They also stop to visit  Mary’s friend Edmond Roy on the way to the island and invite him and one of his friends to join them for a few days.

The author has also constructed a great plot. Mary’s little investigation turns into something bigger than she ever imagined and she is going to need both her aunt’s help and Edmund’s to prove her theory. Each time she figured something out there was another twist. My only problem was her timing. I wanted her to rush into things but she is more of planner. In this case that was probably good and bad. Good because she had someone looking out for her and bad because you can’t plan for everything.

I read this book on Sunday, not wanting to even take a break for dinner. I was so engaged by Mary and her plan and as the suspense built the pages flipped amazingly fast.

I  really don’t want to give anything away but if you like historical mysteries, you will love this story. No motor cars, no cell phones, just horse, buggies, trains, and the brains God gave her Mary does everything she can to expel A Daughter’s Doubt and it was a perfect escape for me!

Cozy Wednesday with Duffy Brown – Author of Braking For Bodies – #Giveaway too!

cozy wednesday 2013 640

Hotels…the good, the bad, the is that a dead body on the porch?

The Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island is a big part of Braking For Bodies, the second book in the Cycle Path mysteries.

BRAKING FOR BODIESThe hotel is spectacular. It is an old hotel with a front porch two football fields long making it the longest in the world. The Grand is in pristine condition where high tea is served promptly at four o’clock, guests must dress for dinner and the rooms are named, lovely and all unique. Wouldn’t you just love to stay in the Jacqueline Kennedy room?

In Braking For BodiesMI 1 there is a dead guy of course but the good news is that Peephole Perry won’t be missed. (Party’s at seven, fireworks at nine). Most are tickled to see the Peepster flat on his back and toes up.

But the bad part of all this is that he just happens to be at the Grand Hotel in his present lifeless condition and dead people are not good for business. If word gets out that there’s a killer lose on the island, tourists will storm the ferry docks to get the heck off the place. Rooms will be vacant, bars empty, lines at the unemployment office long. But maybe there’s a way out after all…

“What’s going on?” A guy called down from the porch of the Grand Hotel right above us. “Is somebody there? Did somebody fall?”

Sutter and I exchanged uh oh looks and a woman on the porch squealed. “Ohmygoodness! It’s a body! This is fantastic! I know what this is. It’s one of those murder mystery weekends right here at the Grand Hotel. The victim’s right there, I can see him all sprawled out on the ground. Oh this is so much fun.”

“Look, lady,” Sutter shot back. “This is no mystery weekend party this is a real crime scene here.”

“Of course it is,” she squealed again. “You all are great actors, this is amazing. What a fantastic surprise right here on Mackinac Island.”

Policeman Nate tries to set the tourists straight, like this is a real crime scene at the Grand Hotel. The harder he tries the more the tourists think he’s a fantastic actor and part of their mystery weekend at the Grand.

So the question is, have you ever attended a murder mystery weekend? Dinner party? Was it fun? Were you in character and did you have a part. And most important did you find the killer?

~Duffy

Oh my stars Duffy, this story is a hoot and a half! Thank you for stopping by today!

Evie Bloomfield puts the pedal to the metal—in the latest Cycle Path mystery from the national bestselling author of Geared for the Grave.

Moving from Los Angeles to small, picturesque Mackinac Island to work in a bike shop might seem crazy, but Evie knows it’s the best decision she’s ever made. That’s not to say she’s gotten rid of all her stress; after all, the upcoming Lilac Festival has everyone in town riding in circles.

But things really go downhill when a ferry full of tourists—including Evie’s friend Fiona’s former boss, the editor of a sleazy rag in LA—arrives on the island. No one knows why Peephole Perry came all the way to Mackinac, but things aren’t looking good for Fiona when Peep is found dead. Now Evie has to gear up and get a grip on the truth if she wants to clear her friend’s name…

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Pack your bags we are headed for Mackinac Island for the Lilac Festival!!

There are tourists everywhere and even a few people posing as tourists. Evie’s friend Fiona is shocked when her former boss, Peephole Perry, gets off the ferry. This can’t be good. His trip is cut short when he is found dead outside of The Grand Hotel. This isn’t good for Peep or the island. A dead body could mean cancelled reservations and a mass exodus of the guests that have already arrived. When one of the hotel’s guests thinks it is a murder mystery game, Evie convinces Police Chief Sutter that this is a great cover so he (with her help) can catch the killer. Unfortunately all the evidence points at Fiona so Evie needs to catch a “brake” to prove her innocence.

I have to start by saying if you need a pick me up pick up this book! I was laughing, giggling, and almost rolling on the floor laughing throughout the entire book. I know murder is a serious thing but poor Evie, she has so many things to do and so many things go wrong, she has to find the humor or she would spend the whole book in tears. From a missing wedding dress, to a mistress, and a few near misses that may have been attempts on her life, Evie treks back and forth around the island trying to do everything asked of her and more.

Duffy Brown brings us back to this idyllic island to follow around Evie Bloomfield. Evie is a smart woman with a very unique business, renting one of a kind bicycles that she has painted herself. You can rent the music bike, or the Sherlock bike, one of the many lilac bikes or any other of the very imaginatively themed bicycles. Evie’s mother has returned to the island and has opened her law office behind bike shop. There is a fudge shop right next door and Rudy, the original owner of the bike shop, splits his time between the 2 places. His thoughts are more on keeping his bride to be happy than anything else.

I am totally in awe of the way Ms. Brown writes. I was grabbed from the first page. My attention was completely held until the last word. To be truthful I didn’t want the story to end. The whole murder mystery game just had me in stitches. At least 4 teams of people were tracking down “clues” and creating theories to catch the culprit. The way the main characters dealt with them all while really trying to solve the mystery itself was truly a unique plot idea.

A great addition to this series. Murder and yes, mayhem along with wonderful characters shine in this Cycle Path Mystery. I have already been to Rudy’s Rides and reserved the Nancy Drew bike for our next excursion to this wonderful place!

After their flight to Mexico is cancelled, Clyde and her detective boyfriend, Mac, end up snowed in with their families at a supposedly haunted hotel. Clyde’s tarot card reading mother, Rose, is making dire predictions for the weekend, and self-proclaimed pet psychic Aunt Vi is enchanted by the legend of the hotel’s ghost—until the power goes out and a body turns up.

With a hotel full of stranded suspects, Clyde will have to draw on all her skills—both the police ones she’d rather forget and the psychic ones she’d rather ignore—to solve the bone-chilling mystery before someone else gets iced…

Dollycas’s Thoughts

All Clyde and Mac wanted was to get away from the Michigan cold and their overwhelming families. Time alone catching rays on a beach in Mexico is delightful, it was for me and Mr. Dollycas but Clyde and Mac don’t even make it to the airport before it starts snowing and I mean really snowing. Mac tries to save the day by taking Clyde to a wonderful castle/hotel to wait out the storm but as soon as the arrive who do they find? Their mothers and Aunt Vi and a bunch of knitters on a weekend retreat. To make matter worse there are no vacancies and Clyde ends up sharing a room with her aunt and her mother and Mac joins his mother in her room. I definitely would have set things up a little differently, sent Mac’s mom to bunk with Rose and Vi and let Mac and Clyde have a room to themselves, but with this family that was not happening. The blizzard seems to camp right over the hotel so everyone is stuck there and the power and phones go out. Oh and one of the owners is murdered shortly thereafter. Now Clyde and Mac have a hotel full of suspects and Aunt Vi wanting to help them investigate. Can their relationship endure this much family togetherness?

Eastman has given us quite a closed room (building) mystery. One of the guests or the staff is a murderer and surprisingly almost anyone could have done it. Vi is even accused at one point. I liked the way Mac and Clyde took charge and interviewed almost everyone. Someone called them on their authority but it didn’t stop them.

Sitting here in the Wisconsin cold with the snow blowing outside I snuggled under a blanket with a cup of hot chocolate and escaped right into this book. As you can see from the cover the dogs even show up at the hotel (their arrival is pretty funny) and I had my Nerabelle curled right up at my feet too.

These characters are a lot of fun. The Fortunes are a unique bunch with their tarot cards and such, but lovable in their own overbearing way.  Clyde is getting close to the one-year mark when she needs to decide whether or not she is going to stay in Crystal Haven and her family can’t help but share their opinions. The men in this family are truly outnumbered and outmatched. Eastman has poured her all into these characters.

Carlisle Castle is a wonderful place. The home has been turned into a hotel and the place is full of antiques. Their are rooms in the turrets and hidden stairways and big fireplaces. It is rumored to have a resident ghost too! I wonder if this is based on a real place in Michigan. I would love to visit.

The paranormal aspect in this story was pretty light. Vi and Rose’s attempts to use their “powers” to help wasn’t too successful and Clyde is still learning her capabilities. Seth has some keen insights.

The knitter’s retreat really added some entertaining moments. I learned about yarn bombing and was in awe at some of the items. It would have been a perfect event without the dead body. Snowed in with all the yarn you could imagine with plenty of time to just knit and purl and create.

This is just the 3rd book in this series so I do recommend you start at the beginning so you meet this Fortune – ate family from the start. They have been called “kooky” by several reviewers but I don’t think they are on the same plane as the kooky Adam’s Family, but they are special. You deserve to enjoy them from the beginning. If you are already a fan you know just what I mean.

When Monica Albertson comes to Cranberry Cove—a charming town on the eastern shore of Lake Michigan—to help her half-brother Jeff on his cranberry farm, the last thing she expects to harvest is a dead body.

It seems that Sam Culbert, who ran the farm while Jeff was deployed overseas, had some juicy secrets that soon prove fatal, and Jeff is ripe for the picking as a prime suspect. Forming an uneasy alliance with her high-maintenance stepmother, Monica has her hands full trying to save the farm while searching for a killer. Culbert made plenty of enemies in the quaint small town…but which one was desperate enough to kill?

INCLUDES DELICIOUS RECIPES!

Dollycas’s Thoughts

This is a very intriguing mystery with vibrant characters.

We meet Monica Alberston. She has brother, Jeff, a veteran who was injured while deployed, leaving one arm basically useless. I can relate due to my own right arm left paralyzed after an accident 15 years ago. Jeff has a cranberry farm and also a store where they sell cranberry baked goods and related merchandise. The former owner, Sam Culbert, ran the farm while Jeff was overseas and it isn’t making a much of a profit as Jeff had hoped. Monica has come to Cranberry Cove to help Jeff turn things around. Finding a dead body in the cranberry bog is not what she had in mind though. In fact it may mean the end of her brother’s farm. Monica and Jeff share a father but have different mothers. We meet Jeff’s mother in this story too.

Monica is a strong, smart, woman, a perfect protag. She uncovers something very surprising when she goes over the accounts.  I really like Jeff. He has a battle ahead of him as he adjusts to his new reality. His mom, Gina is different than I expected. I was afraid evil stepmother thing would come out and am thrilled that I was wrong. She and Monica make a great team. The supporting cast is great too. Just to name a few, we have the VanVelsen sisters, identical twins, who own the candy store. They also have a black cat, named Midnight. Greg Harper owns the local bookstore. And Bart, owns on old fashioned butcher shop. They all have great depth for the first installment of a new series.

The story bends around and twists. The deceased wife doesn’t seem that upset, are there some secrets to be uncovered? Could she have killed her husband? The man may have owned a lot of property and be the mayor but he wasn’t very well liked. The police may think Jeff had motive but there are so many other possible suspects. Peg Cochan has written one heck of a mystery. She had me guessing all the way to the end.

A delightful setting and engaging characters including a great amateur sleuth has this series off to a fantastic start. Book 2, Berry The Hatchet, comes out May 3.

Allie McMurphy is busy making yummy fudge for the summer holiday–until murder gives her something else to chew on. . .

Red, White, And Boom

It’s not Fourth of July on Mackinac Island without fireworks and fudge. The Historic McMurphy Hotel and Fudge Shop is supplying the treats–and Allie has hired Rodney Rivers, the biggest name in aerial displays, to create an unforgettable spectacle. Unfortunately, Allie finds him dead, covered with screaming chicken fireworks, just before the entire warehouse of pyrotechnics goes up in smoke. Is it arson or is it murder? Allie and her bichonpoo, Mal, must sift through the suspects until the killer is caught and the island can enjoy a star-spangled celebration.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

I love big fireworks celebrations because the 4th of July is just 3 days after my birthday. We usually take in 3 or more shows around that time. Of course attending 3 on Mackinac Island with FUDGE would be perfect sans the dead bodies of course.

This time Nancy Coco has really given protag Allie McMurphy a lot to do. She is not only running the McMurphy Hotel and Fudge Shop and trying to come up with the perfect Red, White and Blue fudge recipe, but she is also in charge of making the 3 fireworks shows go off without a hitch. Her plan goes horribly awry when the pyro – technician she hired is found dead and the whole batch of fireworks explodes in the warehouse. Of course, the celebration committee hold her responsible and expects her to find more fireworks and someone to set them off with only a few days until the 4th. She also is hot on trail trying to catch the person that blew up her whole part of the celebration. Independence Day takes on a whole new meaning as everything she loves could be in danger due to her sticking her nose into the investigation.

I really enjoy my virtual trips to Mackinac Island and visiting Allie, Jenn, Frances, Mr. Devaney, Trent and all the rest of its residents. Allie’s puppy Mal always makes me smile. Coco puts several of them in danger this time and that made my heart beat just a little faster. There is also a dash of humor and bit of romance to round of this entertaining story.

This series and the Fudge Shop Mysteries by Christine DeSmet are very similar with fudge shops located in tourist attraction spots. They both have great characters and fine mysteries. If you like one be sure to try the other.

If you enjoy cozy mysteries – all the elements are here. Somehow our heroine is in the middle of discovering a dead body, she has a cute dog, lots of friends, and some cantankerous folks that blame her for things out of her control.

~A Chick Who Reads

Oh Say Can You Fudge is the 3rd book in Coco’s (aka Parra’s) ‘Candy-Coated Mysteries’ and reads quite well as a standalone. How does an author write such a book, that works well on its own, but makes people want to read the rest of the series. Well, I don’t know. But whatever the process is, Coco has that recipe memorized, because this book has whetted my appetite for some more of her sweet reads!

Cozy Wednesday with Duffy Brown – Author of Geared For The Grave (Giveaway too!)

cozy wednesday 2013 640Welcome to Cozy Wednesday!

Duffy Brown has a new Cozy Series and she is here to tell us all about it!

duffy brown

Small Town or City Slicker?

In Geared for the Grave Evie Bloomfield wants to boost her chances for a promotion so she agrees to leave Chicago and head off to Mackinac Island to help her boss’ dad with his cycle shop.

GearedMackinac is a reaMackinac 3l island, an eight-mile chunk of land where Lake Michigan meets Lake Huron. It’s truly beautiful, no cars with horses and bikes a twenty-minute ferry ride from the mainland. When the lakes freeze…or as the islanders call it “the ice makes…there is no ferry, very limited plane service and if the ice is think enough snowmobiles are the way off the place.

So could you live here year-round?

lilac 4Without cars it’s so quiet and the whole island is a throwback to the 1800s with vintage baseball, parades for every occasion like the Lilac Festival, Horse Festival, Fudge Festival etc. There’s the town gazebo for live music, dressing for dinner at the Grand Hotel, high tea, horse drawn carriages with men in top hats and formal attire and did I mention the no cars thing?

Mackinac hotelMackinac is waking up to the clip clop of horses’ hooves on cobblestone and often the whole island cocooned in dense fog with the foghorns moaning out in the harbor. You’ll be in the best shape of you life with having to walk everywhere and the sunset over the Mackinaw Bridge will always take your breath away.

Mackinac 6This sound amazing to many of us like and like a death sentence to others. There is no mall! There is no Walmart, big box store of any sort, no free wifi except at Horn’s bar and the library. Often your cell phone won’t work and you’ll be hanging over the end of the pier to get reception for the so important phone call. There are only 500 permanent residents so things get a bit confining in the winter when the way to get around is your snowmobile. Your kids go to a school with sixty other kids…just sixty…and there is no Dollar Store. And it’s reeeeeally cold.

There are bicycles and horses everywhere, festivals galore like the Lilac Festival, Fudge Festival, Jazz, Horse etc. They are all fun and everyone turns out to watch. Brings the whole island together.

So what do you think? Are you a island person or a big city guy or gal? Personally I think I’d fit in perfectly on Mackinac Island. It’s a writer’s heaven and I’ve always wanted my own a snowmobile.

Hugs,
Duffy Brown

Mackinac Island is a peaceful summer resort town where everyone coasts through the streets on bicycles. But after someone sends a prominent local on her final ride, it’s up to one resourceful visitor to get things running again…

Hoping to shift her chances of a promotion in her favor, Evie Bloomfield heads to Mackinac Island to assist her boss’s father. Rudy Randolph has broken his leg and operating his bike shop, Rudy’s Rides, is too much to handle by himself. But Evie’s good turn only leads to more trouble…

After Evie’s arrival, wealthy resident Bunny Harrington dies in what looks like a freak bike accident. Upon closer inspection, Bunny’s brakes were tampered with, and now the prime suspect in her murder is also Bunny’s number one enemy: Rudy. So if Evie hopes to stay on her boss’s good side, she’ll need to steer Rudy clear of jail. Now she must quickly solve this mystery so she can put the brakes on the real killer’s plan…

Dollycas’s Thoughts

I knew Evie was in trouble the minute she got off the ferry and requested a taxi. Seems her boss failed to tell her about all the charm of Mackinac Island, like there are no motor vehicles allowed. From there she gets into every kind of trouble possible including finding Bunny Harrington’s dead body. What looks like a freak bicycle accident is soon ruled a homicide and her boss’s father is the number one suspect.

Evie is a delightful character with her heart in the right place. Yes she came to island to garner favor from her boss in hopes of a promotion but once she meets Rudy and the other residents she is just trying to do the right thing. That isn’t easy because as a “fudgie” she seems to get blamed for everything the goes wrong. I really like the way she used her creativity to breathe new life into Rudy’s Rides all while she is doing her best to keep him out of jail and trying to nudge temporary police chief Nate Sutter in the direction of many other suspects.

Clever characters abound in the new series. In addition to Evie and Rudy we meet Evie’s mother who makes an unexpected trip to Mackinac Island and meets a handsome gentleman with a questionable background. We also meet a man the locals call Jason Bourne because he is a master of disguise and always has briefcase handcuffed to his wrist. Everyone is convinced he is a hit man but I figured out is real occupation quite quickly. You also have Speedy and Huffy, these are people, not pets. They both want Rudy to be guilty so they can add his bike business to their own. They are also high on Evie’s suspect list.

Mackinac Island is a wonderful place to set a mystery series but it is also the setting of another cozy mystery series written by Nancy Coco. Both authors draw on actual events to include in their stories and the Island is a pretty small place. I half expected the protagonist Allie from that series to run into Evie somewhere along the way.

Duffy Brown does give the reader a great mystery to follow and I was totally surprised by the way this one played out. The plot takes some wacky turns and that keeps the pages turning. There is also quite a bit of humor laced throughout the entire story. From Evie’s rash to where they keep the dead body on ice until after the tourists leave and all the little phrases the locals use to keep the “fudgies” in the dark all had me “tee heeing” from the beginning to the end.

This series is off to a wonderful start. -Braking for Bodies  is coming in 2015 and -Tandem Demise will follow in 2016. I predict a lot of fun  and drama for Evie ahead!
