Zinnia, Mississippi is rife with quirky characters, but the arrival of three sister witches—and their intention to open a Wiccan boarding school—sets the small town on its ear. And bodies begin to accumulate as a result. Faith, Hope, and Charity Harrington are sexy and smart. They’re setting up their boarding school in an old dairy—a piece of property with tremendous development potential. And they’re standing in the way of “progress,” according to some in the town.

When young Corey Fontana goes missing, Delaney Detective Agency is hired to find the youth—who’s well known as a local hooligan. His mother, Kitten Fontana, who is married to the kind of land development, believes the witches have abducted her son and makes no bones about it. She’s willing to pay hard cash to find her son, especially if she can implicate the witches in his disappearance.

When Sarah Booth Delaney and her partner, Tinkie Richmond, find Corey, unharmed, it is only the beginning of a series of events that include midnight dances under a full moon, love potions, and murder. Are the sister witches criminals… or victims? Do they truly have magical powers, as they claim? Sarah Booth and Tinkie must find the answer before more people are harmed.

A Well-Timed Murder (Agnes Luthi Mysteries)
International Mystery
2nd in Series
Minotaur Books (February 6, 2018)
Hardcover: 352 pages
ISBN-13: 978-1250110015

Swiss-American police officer Agnes Lüthi is on leave in Lausanne, Switzerland, recovering from injuries she sustained in her last case, when an old colleague invites her to the world’s premier watch and jewelry trade show at the grand Messe Basel Exhibition Hall. Little does Agnes know, another friend of hers, Julien Vallotton, is at the same trade show—and he’s looking for Agnes. Julien Vallotton was friends with Guy Chavanon, a master of one of Switzerland’s oldest arts: watchmaking. Chavanon died a week ago, and his daughter doesn’t believe his death was accidental. Shortly before he died, Chavanon boasted that he’d discovered a new technique that would revolutionize the watchmaking industry, and she believes he may have been killed for it. Reluctantly, Agnes agrees to investigate his death. But the world of Swiss watchmaking is guarded and secretive, and before she realizes it, Agnes may be walking straight into the path of a killer.

Tracee de Hahn’s next mystery, A Well-Timed Murder, is another magnetic mystery that will engross readers from the opening page to the stunning conclusion.

Tracee de Hahn is the author of the Agnes Lüthi mysteries, which were inspired by her years living in Switzerland. Prior to writing full time she practiced architecture and was head of university alumni relations at a major west coast university. Currently, she and her Swiss-architect husband live in southwest Virginia with their Jack Russell Terriers. She is a member of Sisters in Crime, International Thriller Writers and Mystery Writers of America.

Tracee de Hahn is an excellent writer, capably using her gift of words to draw readers into the Swiss culture, landscape, and competitive world of watchmaking. This is a complex story that is rich in characterization, yet easy to follow.

With plots and sub-plots as intricate and detailed as some of the time-pieces in the “Baselworld” exhibition, Ms. de Hahn crafts an engrossing story.

Cozy Wednesday with Gail Oust – Author of Ginger Snapped – #GuestPost / #Review / #Giveaway – Great Escapes Book Tour @MinotaurBooks

Welcome to the 1st Cozy Wednesday of 2018!
I am pleased as punch to welcome Gail Oust back to Escape With Dollycas Into A Good Book today!

by Gail Oust

Two books, five editors.  How did I get so lucky?  Or should make that unlucky?  The saga began when Anne Brewer, my dream of an editor, made an offer for two more books in my Spice Shop Mysteries—Curried Away and Ginger Snapped.  I was elated at learning this while visiting family in Michigan over the Christmas holidays.  Sadly, Anne decided after returning from maternity leave to depart Minotaur/St. Martin’s for another publishing house.  She left me in the capable hands of her assistant who I’ll refer to as Editor B.  B came on board just in time to request revisions on Curried Away.  Unfortunately, the request came at a time when we were eight hundred miles from home due to a family medical emergency.  I invariably travel with my computer as though it’s attached by an invisible umbilical cord–but not this time.  The life-or-death emergency had prompted us to hastily throw essentials into the car and head north.  I prevailed—make that begged, pleaded—family members to help me out of this predicament.  Help came in the form of my granddaughter’s mother-in-law, Deb.  I rolled up my shirtsleeves and went to work.  It wasn’t the revisions that left me frustrated—B’s hand with the red ink was mercifully light—it was the fact Deb used a totally different Windows Office from which I was accustomed.  In spite of afternoons and evenings spent at the hospital, mornings were devoted to revisions.  Thanks to Deb I was able to complete and return everything on schedule.

Shortly afterward, B informed me she, too, was leaving Minotaur.  Editor C became my new editor.  By this time, I had begun the final book of my contract.   I haven’t the foggiest idea of what happened to her, but Editor C lasted only two months before replaced by Editor D.  D jumped in with both feet and promptly changed the title.  I have to admit her idea was terrific.  When it comes to titles, it was easier naming my children. D ably guided my baby, now titled Ginger Snapped, through all its stages of growth and development:  revisions, copyedits, page proofs, cover copy, and cover design. I really liked D and felt bad when I learned she, too, was moving on to newer pastures.  At that point, E, my fifth and final editor, appeared on the scene.  Editor D didn’t leave much behind for E to do on Ginger Snapped, but she answers all of my emails promptly and seems enthusiastic on my behalf.  I’m not dissatisfied.

At times I wonder how this game of revolving editors has impacted my writing career. To be honest,  I’ve seen some differences between the first three books in the series and the last two.  Could these be the result of editor turnover?  On the other hand, these changes could also be the result of business strategies far beyond my control.  I remind myself that you can’t control what you can’t control.  I also like the adage that when life gives you lemons, make lemonade.  So, here’s to lemonade and Ginger Snapped!

Thank you so much, Gail, for visiting today!

Piper Prescott and Police Chief Wyatt McBride might have gotten off on the wrong foot but, over the past year, their interactions have evolved into a friendship of sorts. And when the body of Shirley Randolph is found floating in a fishing hole, their relationship reaches entirely new territory.

Shirley, the town’s Realtor of the Year, was also Wyatt’s suspected romantic interest, and now the residents of Brandywine Creek are speculating that Wyatt is responsible for her death. As the town council moves to suspend the handsome lawman, Piper springs into action to save his reputation and possibly his freedom. She enlists the aid of her BFF, Reba Mae Johnson, along with Wyatt himself, to help solve the puzzle and find Shirley’s real killer.

Pointing them toward high-powered real estate tactics and possible affairs, the investigation soon becomes personal when Piper’s shop, Spice It Up!, is burglarized, and she’s forced off the road late one night, narrowly escaping serious injury. Realizing that she must be close to uncovering the truth and that the evidence against Wyatt is no longer circumstantial, Piper resorts to drastic measures to prevent a grave miscarriage of justice.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

The town of Brandywine Creek is turned upside down when local realtor Shirley Randolph is found in Police Chief Wyatt McBride’s fishing hole. He is suspended from the force and is now the prime suspect. Piper is on the case to prove his innocence and set things right all around town, but it isn’t easy when her ex gets right in the middle of things. She is clearly on the killer’s radar because her shop was broken into and the person was definitely looking for something. Circumstances get dicey when her life is in danger and spicy when she gets closer to the chief.

This was a fun mystery to read. Piper and Reba Mae are always entertaining, but the direction of Wyatt and Piper’s relationship was the part I liked the best. Him, being suspended made him see how beneficial Piper could be with her bit of investigating. Plus spending time together sure didn’t hurt. This is not your typical cozy romance, in fact, Piper did believe the gossip around town, that he and the deceased were seeing each other. Kudos to the author for the way this is written.

The case this time was tricky because the officer left in charge was trying harder to prove Wyatt’s guilt, being after his job, rather than trying to find the real guilty party. Thankfully Piper was following the clues and reporting back to the chief so that the truth would be revealed. I was there with them every step of the way.

This mystery is nicely seasoned with plenty of humor. Small town life lends well to that as does small-town politics. At times I was shaking my head because so many things remind me of the small town where I grew up. Then you add in the Southern ways and charm, and you have a perfect cozy mystery.

There are also fantastic recipes in the book after the story.

What a great read to start the new year!

Friends often accuse Gail Oust of flunking retirement.  While working as a nurse/vascular technologist, Gail penned nine historical romances under the pseudonym Elizabeth Turner for Avon, Pocket, Berkley, and Kensington.  It wasn’t until she and her husband retired to South Carolina that inspiration struck for a mystery.  Hearing the words, “maybe it’s a dead body,” while golfing with friends fired her imagination for the Bunco Babe Mystery series originally published by NAL.  In conjunction with Beyond the Page Publishing, the Bunco Babe series has been republished in digital format as the Kate McCall Mysteries complete with new titles and a whole new look.  Gail has written five Spice Shop Mysteries for Minotaur/St. Martin’s.  Her favorite pastimes are reading, traveling, and hanging out with friends.

Delaney Nichols has settled so comfortably into her new life in Edinburgh that she truly feels it’s become more home than her once beloved Kansas. Her job at the Cracked Spine, a bookshop that specializes in rare manuscripts as well as other sundry valuable historical objects, is everything she had dreamed, with her new boss, Edwin MacAlister, entrusting her more and more with bigger jobs. Her latest task includes a trip to Castle Doune, a castle not far out of Edinburgh, to retrieve a hard-to-find edition of an old Scottish comic, an “Oor Wullie,” in a cloak and dagger transaction that Edwin has orchestrated.

While taking in the sights of the distant Highlands from the castle’s ramparts, Delaney is startled when she spots a sandal-clad foot at the other end of the roof. Unfortunately, the foot’s owner is very much dead and, based on the William Wallace costume he’s wearing, perfectly matches the description of the man who was supposed to bring the Oor Wullie. As Delaney rushes to call off some approaching tourists and find the police, she comes across the Oor Wullie, its pages torn and fluttering around a side wall of the castle. Instinct tells her to take the pages and hide them under her jacket. It’s not until she returns to the Cracked Spine that she realizes just how complicated this story is and endeavors to untangle the tricky plot of why someone wanted this man dead, all before getting herself booked for murder.

Nonetheless, it’s her duty as their son’s guardian to ensure his safety, even if it means putting her own life at risk. Can she protect the baby and find the culprit before someone else ends up as roadkill?

From New York Times bestselling author Ellery Adams comes the first in an intriguing new series set within a quirky small-town club where the key to happiness, friendship—or solving a murder—can all be found within the pages of the right book . . .

Miracle Springs, North Carolina, is a place of healing. Strangers flock here hoping the natural hot springs, five-star cuisine, and renowned spa can cure their ills. If none of that works, they often find their way to Miracle Books, where, over a fresh-baked “comfort” scone from the Gingerbread House bakery, they exchange their stories with owner Nora Pennington in return for a carefully chosen book. That’s Nora’s special talent—prescribing the perfect novel to ease a person’s deepest pain and lighten their heaviest burden.

When a visiting businessman reaches out to Nora for guidance, she knows exactly which novels will help. But before he can keep their appointment at Miracle Books, he’s found dead on the train tracks.

Stunned, Nora forms the Secret, Book, and Scone Society, a group of damaged souls yearning to gain trust and earn redemption by helping others. To join the society, members must divulge their darkest secret—the terrible truth that brought each of them to Miracle Springs in the first place.

Determined to uncover the truth behind the businessman’s demise, the women meet in Nora’s cramped and cozy bookstore to share stories and trade support. And as they untangle a web of corruption, they also discover their own courage, purpose, and a sisterhood that will carry them through every challenge—proving it’s never too late to turn the page and start over . . .

Seeds of Revenge (A Greenhouse Mystery)
Cozy Mystery
3rd in Series
Setting – Pennsylvania
Henery Press (November 14, 2017)
Paperback: 288 pages
ISBN-13: 978-1635112757
Kindle ASIN: B07519T827

It’s time to cuddle up with a holiday whodunit. Smell the crisp pines and baking cranberries as you sip your hot apple cider. It may be the season, but the mood in Winsome is anything but jolly.

Megan Sawyer is determined to farm year-round. So much so that she braves a December snowstorm to pitch her fresh greenhouse greens to Philadelphia chefs.

And then she sees a stranger stranded on the side of the road.

But this woman is no stranger to Winsome. It’s Becca Fox. A love chemist (you read that right). She’s headed to her aunt’s house to sell her love potions at holiday events.

Or so Becca thinks.

Her sneaky aunt only invited Becca home to reunite her with her estranged father. It sounds noble and kind-hearted until the man ends up dead.

Megan soon finds herself in the middle. She realizes Becca’s not the only one getting iced over. Megan’s own aunt, the famous mystery author, is dragged into the drama. Her novels implicate her and she’s in trouble.

Now it’s personal. Our Megan must follow a cryptic trail of literary clues, all while sifting through the victim’s sordid past. She gets closer to the truth as the murderer gets closer to her.

How’s that for a ho ho ho? Don’t let your fresh apple crisp burn in the oven because you’re lost in this holiday homicide.

In Rudolph, Christmas in July heralds Santa’s arrival by boat to begin his summer vacation at the lake, and Merry Wilkinson, the owner of Mrs. Claus’s Treasures, is looking forward to a busy weekend. But she’s caught off guard when her ex-fiancé, Max Folger, unexpectedly arrives with a team from a lifestyle magazine wanting to do a feature on the July festivities.

It’s clear that Max’s visit has less to do with business and more to do with winning back Merry’s heart. Merry has too much on her plate to deal with an old flame, but when Max is found strangled to death in Mrs. Claus’s Treasures, she must find out who wanted him dead—and stop a killer from ruining the summer holiday cheer.

Cat About Town
Cozy Mystery
1st in Series
Setting – Massachusetts

Minotaur Books (August 1, 2017)
Mass Market Paperback: 304 pages
ISBN-13: 978-1250072061

The first novel in a frisky new mystery series set in a small New England town, where an unlikely citizen is called in to solve the purrfect crime. . .

Maddie James has arrived in Daybreak Island, just off the coast of Massachusetts, eager to settle down and start her own business—and maybe even fall in love. When a stray orange tabby pounces into her life, she’s inspired to open a cat café. But little does Maddie know that she’s in for something a lot more catastrophic when her new furry companion finds the dead body of the town bully. Now all eyes are on Maddie: Who is this crazy cat-whisperer lady who’s come to town? If pet-hair-maintenance and crime-fighting weren’t keeping her busy enough, Maddie now has not one but two eligible bachelors who think she’s the cat’s pajamas . . . and will do anything to win her heart. But how can she even think about happily-ever-after while a killer remains on the loose—and on her path?

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Maddie James comes to town for her grandmother’s funeral and to spend some time with her grandfather as they both grieve.  The funeral has one surprise guest, a cute tabby cat that attached itself right to Maddie. Things go great until her new furry friend finds a dead body. Maddie finds herself reacquainting herself with the people of Daybreak Island and getting to know the new residents as she tries to find the person who was driven to kill the man that wanted to change everything about the Island. Turns out there are plenty of suspects.

Cate Conte has brought some truly lovable characters to this series. The relationship between Maddie and her Grandpa Joe is so heartwarming.  She will go to great lenths to protect him and he her. As a cat lover I was taken in by the way Maddie accepted orange feline into her life complete with a leash to take him with her everywhere. It reminded me of the relationship between Charlie Harris and his cat, Diesel, in Miranda James Cat in the Stacks mystery series, one of my favorite series.

Daybreak Island is a wonderful setting. It is filled with history in the shops and the homes. You need to take a ferry to reach it and while it does have a tourist season most residents live there year round. I could easily picture everything thanks to the author’s terrific descriptions.

The mystery was top notch. A variety of suspects with means, motive and opportunity drew me deeper and deeper into the story.

The “cat cafe” has not come to fruition yet but this first installment gives us the backstory that has started to put the cafe in motion.

This series is off to a fantastic start! I can’t wait for my next escape to Daybreak Island. My virtual bags are already packed.
