Welcome to Leaven—oh wait—Santo Domingo, where DEATH takes a DELICIOUS turn!

Family bombshells, sibling rivalries, blackmail, and a trip that could be deadly…and the new year has only just begun! After a disastrous Thanksgiving, Jolie Tucker is beside herself and feeling the walls closing in around her. She feels like she needs to escape Leavensport before she loses her mind. She unexpectedly gets her wish when her best friend and co-owner of Cast Iron Creations, Ava Martinez, gets a terrifying email revealing that her papa, Thiago, is in danger in Santo Domingo. The girls are off on a dangerous adventure in new territory. Will they be able to save the day before danger finds them?

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Jolie and Ava embark on a trip to Santo Domingo soon after Ava gets a frantic email from her father, Thiago. They don’t really know what they are flying into but Jolie really needed a break from Leavensport so she hopes it is just a family squabble that can be wrapped up quickly and she can enjoy a little vacay before heading home.

When they arrive Ava’s family is surprised, the last thing they wanted was her wrapped up in their troubles. The girls finally figure out that Thiago is being blackmailed and really does need their help and their money.  So while posing as tourists the girls try to find out who is behind the blackmail and why. Turns out acting like a tourist is a lot more dangerous than they imagined.

____

Jodi Rath has penned a fun little mystery and takes her characters and readers on a trip too!

Even with all the trouble they were facing it was great to get to know more about Ava’s family. Sure blackmail is the main mystery but the family dynamics and sibling rivalry are what really drew me in. They were not what I expected at all.

Never fear, Jolie may have been out of the country, but she was just a phone call away from her family. She had hoped the distance would give her time to process family secrets recently revealed but that didn’t happen. Sometimes funny, sometimes pushy, her family just couldn’t leave her alone. This helped keep the Leavensport characters on the pages but I felt a little sorry for Jolie.

The author delivers up plenty of twists and turns and action. I was flipping the pages so fast there should have steam billowing out of my Kindle.

Blueberry Cobbler Blackmail was a nice addition to this series. Entertaining characters, an exciting mystery, plenty of humor and a smidgen of romance give readers a charming little escape. I am looking forward to Cast Iron Stake Through the Heart set to be released on May 29.

About Turkey Basted to Death

Turkey Basted to Death (The Cast Iron Skillet Mystery Series)
Cozy Mystery
2.5 in the Series –  A Holiday Book
Setting – Ohio
MYS ED LLC (November 15, 2019)
Number of Pages 133 pages
Digital ASIN: B07WRJXBLX

Thanksgiving is here, and Jolie Tucker has had quite the year! She is ready to sit back and relax with family and friends. But this is Leavensport, OH—so get ready for intense therapy sessions, dysfunctional family holiday gatherings, uninvited guests, and an inner-city teen advocate found DEAD—stabbed in the ear with the turkey baster!

Welcome to Leavensport, OH, where DEATH takes a DELICIOUS turn!

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Leavensport Ohio is planning a Thanksgiving event to celebrate Thanksgiving together. Jolie is working on turkey recipes to serve the masses when she is approached by the mayor about a problem that has come up. He needs to add a group of inner-city teens to the guest list. She handles the additions with ease until the big day arrives. Before dinner is even served the woman, a teen advocate working with the kids is found dead in the kitchen. The sight was gruesome, a turkey baster shoved in her ear.  Jolie is heartbroken as she really believed in what the woman was doing and knows they would have become good friends. She wants to be sure the killer is caught and will only be thankful when they are behind bars.

___

Again, Jodi Rath has packed these pages full of great characters and intrigue. At 133 pages Turkey Basted to Death sets a fast pace full of twists that can be read all in one sitting. She is excellent at working with a large cast of characters. The recurring characters continue to grow and the new characters are diverse and very well written. It is very easy to connect with all of them. The dialogue is believable and rings true.

Ms. Rath’s entire story embodies the theme of Thanksgiving too. Be grateful for what you have and be open to welcoming new people into your life at all times. She brought together people who may have never met if not for this event and the people of Leavensport didn’t disappoint.

I have enjoyed all three books in this series. Don’t be fooled by the novella length, they are all well-written and well-plotted with surprising reveals. They also have some great recipes to try.

The next book in the series, Blueberry Cobbler Blackmail is set to be released February 28, 2020, with Cast Iron Stake Through the Heart to follow at the end of May. I can’t wait!

Author Interview

I am so excited to have Jodi stop by today!

Tell us a little bit about yourself.

I’m an odd duck in that I am creative, but I’m also logical as well. So, I work from both my right and left brain. It can get chaotic in there at times—conflict and all! This is why I have a business that incorporates working in higher education as an online adjunct, writing on deadline for educational blogs, affiliations, and publishers, while also writing a culinary cozy mystery series—The Cast Iron Skillet Mystery Series.

What are three things most people don’t know about you?

  1. I practice Kenpo, which is a combination of kickboxing and martial arts.
  2. I have eight cats now, and over 17-years we’ve had 16 cats. All 16 will be on the cover of my books.
  3. I’ve been in race cars in CA at Laguna Seca.

What is the first book you remember reading?

A Choose-Your-Own-Adventure book.

What are you reading now?

Bailey Cates Cookies and Clairvoyance

What books have most inspired you?

In terms of mystery: Sara Paretsky, Agatha Christie, Amanda Flower, Heather Blake, Bailey Cates, Elaine Viets—these are all authors I love reading any and all their books. They help me in my writing.

What made you decide you wanted to write mysteries?

I love puzzles, and I feel all of life is a mystery.

Do you have a special place you like to write?

I write everywhere—on my deck, on my screened-in porch, in my family room, kitchen, bed, office, restaurant, at a family gathering—the oddest place I’ve ever written was one time I went to take recycling and the trucks were there dumping out the bins—so I parked and got my laptop out and wrote while they finished. I take journals and laptops everywhere. One time I wrote in a movie theater during the previews.

Where do the ideas for your books come from?

Life, I taught high school for twenty years. I take themes from everyday life—I taught that way as well. It’s important to me to create a world that has diversity in it where people struggle and are constantly trying to find ways to be better and find ways to effectively communicate.

Is there anything about writing you find most challenging?

I said earlier I have cats—I use all my cats in my series. The ones that have passed away, remain alive in the series—it is difficult to write about them at times.

What do you think makes a good story?

I think it’s important as an author to be sure what you are writing allows for an escape—while still addressing universal topics that we all go through. As a reader, I read to escape from my life—but I find that part of that means being able to relate to topics and characters as well. It sounds like a contradiction but it’s really not.

Which, of all your characters, do you think is the most like you?

My protagonist, Jolie Tucker, is based off me. She’s not completely me, but a lot of her history and internal struggles come from my life.

What makes your books different from others out there in this genre?

There aren’t many cast iron skillet mystery series out there. Also, I do a two-minute mystery a month for those that subscribe to my newsletter for an opportunity to win things—I use my characters in those mysteries. I hit on topics like urban sprawl, gentrification, cultures, transgender, homosexuality, and I incorporate diversity into my series—with the hope that as the series progresses the people in the city/village of the series will continue to find solutions and ways to effectively communicate and make things work within their communities.

What’s next on the horizon for you?

In 2020, I have four more books in this series coming out. February 28th, Jolie and Ava head to Santa Domingo in Blueberry Cobbler Blackmail.

Thank you Jodi for visiting today!

Cozy Wednesday with Jodi Rath – Author of Jalapeño Cheddar Cornbread Murder (The Cast Iron Skillet Mystery Series) #AuthorInterview / #Review / #Giveaway – Great Escapes Book Tour

Welcome to Cozy Wednesday!
I am so excited to have Jodi Rath visit today!

Hi Jodi,

Tell us a little bit about yourself.

I’m a wife, cat lover with nine cats in our home, educator, writer, artist, and kickboxer who is obsessed with Tom Waits.

What are three things most people don’t know about you?

I have a brown belt in kickboxing;

I have curly hair that I perm in my kitchen every three months;

I would never leave the house if I could realistically make that happen—and I very rarely leave my house.

What is the first book you remember reading?

Any of the Choose Your Own Adventure books—those were my favorites!

What are you reading now?

Death Al Dente by Leslie Budewitz

What books have most inspired you?

Anything Agatha Christie, Sweet Valley High Series when I was a teen, Judy Blume books as a pre-teen, poetry of all sorts—I used to check out as many poetry books as the librarian allowed me too in 5th through 9th grade.

What made you decide you wanted to write mysteries?

I believe it all began with the Choose Your Own Adventure books. I liked picking an ending then trying them all and guessing what the other endings would be.

Do you have a special place you like to write?

Any room in my house, on my screened-in porch or on my deck overlooking our woods.

Where do the ideas for your books come from?

From my community, my family, the news, songs, movies, TV shows, art, people I don’t like—LOL.

Is there anything about writing you find most challenging?

I really do love all parts of the writing process. I was a HS English teacher and taught the process regularly. For me as a writer, the first draft is fun—the revision can be cruel at times—especially when I think I got something right and my editor is like, “Um, wow, that really sucks!” LOL—she doesn’t say that—but you get the drift!

What do you think makes a good story?

It has to be universal—things everyone can relate too. There needs to be someone to root for and someone to hate and someone to feel sorry for and someone who we love to hate—characters are important.

Which, of all your characters, do you think is the most like you?

The protagonist, Jolie Tucker.

What makes your books different from others out there in this genre?

There aren’t many Cast Iron Skillet culinary cozies out there. I only know of one other cast iron mystery series.

What’s next on the horizon for you?

Currently working on book 2.5 a Thanksgiving holiday book called Turkey Basted to Death that comes out 11/18/19. In 2020, I will begin two spin-off series to The Cast Iron Skillet Mystery Series—one is Peggy’s Purse Boutique series set in Tri-City (which comes up a lot in The Cast Iron Skillet Mystery Series)—the second series is Gemma’s Bohemian Gems Series that is a spin-off as well.

Thank you, Jodi, so much for dropping by today!

Keep reading for my thoughts about Jalapeño Cheddar Cornbread Murder.

About the Book

Jalapeño Cheddar Cornbread Murder (The Cast Iron Skillet Mystery Series)
Cozy Mystery

Setting – Ohio
MYS ED LLC (June 21, 2019)
Print Length – 185 Pages
Digital ASIN: B07Q1K4DN3

Financial fraud of elderly villagers in Leavensport, an urban sprawl threat to the community, disastrous dates, cross-sell marketing gone wrong, and another murder? Jolie Tucker is ready to try dating again. Well, she has no choice—since her family auctioned her off to the highest bidder. Her best friend, Ava, has agreed to a double date, but both friends find out hidden secrets about their partners as well as deception by one of the village’s own, who will soon be found dead. This plot is sure to be spicy!

Dollycas’s Thoughts

We are back in Ohio at Cast Iron Creations where things are getting jalapeno hot!! A new restaurant has opened and Jolie hopes to work a cross-promotion deal as she has with other businesses, she also is finally going to go on her auction date with Detective Meiser, (her family auctioned off at a fundraiser in the last book), residents are worried about urban sprawl, oh, and there is another dead body.

Ms. Rath’s characters are fun and entertaining. Again, there is a large cast but I was very comfortable after getting to know most of them in the first book. I enjoyed the continued character development.  The new characters were all key to the new mystery. The interactions were all realistic and the dialogue was crisp.

I continue to be amazed by how much drama and action this author brings a reader in less than 200 pages. She does a fabulous job of blending intrigue and everyday life. The daily grind plus secrets, twists, turns, and a surprising ending are all baked together wonderfully by the time we reach the last page. It is a quick read and impossible to put down.

I am not a fan of peppers especially jalapenos but I loved the way that ingredient was incorporated into the story. I also appreciate that cast iron skillet recipes are included for readers to try.

Together Pineapple Upside Down Murder and Jalapeño Cheddar Cornbread Murder equal the length of 1 standard cozy mystery, so I do recommend reading both in order so you can really get to know the characters. I am really looking forward to more books in this series.

Introducing Jolie Tucker, an introverted yet passionate restaurant co-owner of Cast Iron Creations, who, at her best friend Ava’s request, steps out of her comfort zone which leads her into the shade of a killer in the small, cozy village of Leavensport, Ohio. The victim is the villages beloved Ellie Siler who runs the village sweet spot, Chocolate Capers. Jolie finds her grandma Opal is a prime suspect and goes on a search for answers only to find out that her families secret recipes may not belong to the Tucker family at all. Jolie’s job, family, and livelihood are all on the line. The answers are assuredly lethal.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

When Jolie Tucker finds out her Grandma Opal is the top suspect in the death of her friend and owner of Chocolate Capers, Ellie Siler Jolie jumps from the cast iron frying pan into the fire to prove her innocence. What she learns could bring her very short-lived dream as co-owner of the Cast Iron Creations Restaurant to an end. She could also be the killer’s next victim . . .

A dead body, stolen recipes, and family secrets highlight this delightful cozy novella.

Jolie Tucker and her best friend Ava own Cast Iron Creations that features old family recipes made in cast iron skillets. Something her grandma Opal always wanted to do but was never able to do so. Jolie handles the kitchen because she is a real introvert and readers get a little bit of the backstory as to why. Joining Jolie is this story is a big cast. Her best friend Ava, other friends Lydia, Bradley, and Keith, Ava’s girlfriend Delilah, Grandma Opal and her daughter’s, along with Roxi who works at the restaurant and her brother Rex. We also have Detective Meiser, the investigator in charge of the case. At first, I felt like I needed a scorecard to keep everyone straight. It also felt like too many characters for a story of this length. But the author did a good job of making each unique and soon I had a handle on all the players.

This mystery was really twisted up. I did want to reach into the pages and slap the detective a few times. Jolie had a long list of suspects, essentially anyone that wasn’t her grandmother. She has a lot of good theories but the visiting detective in charge wasn’t interested in anything except maybe Jolie herself. The killer reveal was a surprise for me and a nice twist.

I really enjoyed the cast iron skillet theme and I am looking forward to getting to know these characters better and in more depth in the next book, Jalapeño Cheddar Cornbread Murder, out June 21.

Pineapple Upside Down Murder
(The Cast Iron Skillet Mystery Series)

by Jodi Rath

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Hi Everyone,

I’m so excited to be a part of Escape With Dollycas Into a Good Book blog tour! Writing my first fictional book has been an amazing journey and this is the PERFECT way to end it as I move into writing book two of The Cast Iron Skillet Mystery Series, Jalapeño Cheddar Cornbread Murder. I have found that the writing community is one the most gracious and helpful communities out there. I should know as I’ve worked in Advertising, Communications (writing speeches for local city CEO’s), Vice President of a Credit Union, insurance, and now my 21st year in education—which I LOVE with a passion! I have to say all of my years in different fields have all contributed and helped me to be able to run the business I run today. So, even though some of those jobs were jobs I did not enjoy, I learned a lot and was able to take all of those lessons and apply them to what I do today! I wouldn’t change anything at all because I am thrilled with where I am right now!

Writing this series was so much fun, I feel like I’m friends with all my characters. I don’t know if that is normal or not? LOL! There will be fourteen books in this series and I have some overarching themes that will develop as the series continues that I’m very excited about! One of them deals with family and close friends and the paradox that exists with love/hate relationships: how we all navigate through that. My protagonist, Jolie Tucker, always says, “Why is it my family can push my buttons so easily? Oh, yeah, they installed them!” SO TRUE! I love my family to death, but no one can rile me up faster than them. BUT if anyone says one bad thing about them, WATCH OUT!

~Jodi

Thank you, Jodi, for visiting today!
