Synopsis

Aggie Mundeen, who advises readers in her column, “Stay Young with Aggie,” is pushing forty and determined to postpone a precipitous descent into middle-age. She plans to rendezvous with SAPD Detective Sam Vanderhoven at a hotel on the San Antonio River Walk…a vacation from crime and reset for their tumultuous relationship. In the midst of River City during Fiesta Week, what could go wrong?

Aggie’s new friends, the Fabulous Femmes, are holding their convention at the hotel. When hotel guests are murdered, Aggie discovers her friends have disturbing backgrounds. Evil surfaces at Fiesta events, and Aggie’s dancing debut at a Fiesta performance at Arneson River Theater is fraught with danger. Even in idyllic River City, crime complicates relationships.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Sam and Aggie had a grand plan for some time alone in San Antonio during Fiesta Week but there is just one small problem, there is a dead woman in their hotel suite. They hadn’t checked in yet but there are no more rooms to be found and Sam has been called back to work to investigate the case. He knows he is not going to be able to keep Aggie from butting her way into the investigation and she has a pretty good record for solving previous murders so he rather than fight her he embraces her help. Of course, she does nothing in moderation so he may be saving her yet again. This man has the patience of a saint.

I liked Aggie more in this book than any of the others. She wasn’t so immersed in the staying and looking young frame of mind as in past books. Of course, it was there a little bit, but now that her relationship with Sam is moving in a positive direction it is not consuming her life the way it was in previous stories. Even her column, “Stay Young with Aggie,” fan letters were requesting more relationship advice instead of ways to look and act younger.

In addition to the core characters we meet a whole new group of people, the Fabulous Femmes and their significant others. In fact, the dead woman is part of their group, making them all suspects. These ladies and their men are very unique. The men all have a military background and the woman love to party. I liked the way the accepted Aggie right into their group. Aggie has a way about her that people open up and tell her things that they probably wouldn’t share with anyone else. Sam knows this and encourages her to use it to help him.

This story is well written and the mystery sends Aggie off in several directions. She really has great observation techniques and hones in to important details.

The main thing this author does though is fill this story with so much humor and absolutely funny moments. A scene in a bookstore was hilarious.

If you like your mysteries full of comedy and quirky characters, look no further than Nancy G. West. They are sure to put a smile on your face.

About This Author

I’ve been writing since age seven: poems back and forth with my mom. I had a real poem published in the Library Journal, Pegasus, at age fifteen. At eighteen, I wanted to study journalism and English literature, but friends who chose that college route were making minimum wage or selling lingerie. Being practical, I earned a business degree. After marriage and two children, I decided I HAD to study literature and write. I wrote non-fiction articles, a biography, and a suspense novel in 2004. That’s when whimsical Aggie Mundeen cut through the suspense, popped into my head and demanded her own series. The Aggie Mundeen mystery capers were born. Synopsis:

Skirting forty and appalled by the prospect of descending into middle-age decrepitude, Aggie Mundeen blasts off to the local university to study the genetics of aging. In addition to providing youthful hints for readers of her column, “Stay Young with Aggie,” Aggie is doggedly determined to stay young.

Despite conflicts with her professor, she learns about the Human Genome Project and DNA. When she discovers a dead body, Detective Sam reminds her not to “help” with the investigation. But dangerously curious and programmed to prod, she races to solve the crime, winds up the prime suspect and is on target to become next campus corpse.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Set in 1997 – Aggie is excessively preoccupied with the idea of getting old. She writes a column  “Stay Young with Aggie,” where her fans write her letters like Dear Abby. She finds out about a class about the genetics of aging at the nearby university and quickly signs up.  The professor teaching it and Aggie have a past, she was kicked out of his last class, but she promises to behave herself this time. Unfortunately the professor dies shortly after the course begins.

Now the professor was a very intelligent man but he ends up dead. Aggie is a smart woman, but she sets herself on a brainless path and she may end up dead as well.

Aggie is an interesting character with what I think is a huge secret that has been batted about since the first book. She is also in love with a man that she hopes will fall in love with her. But this obsession of staying young is a bit over the top. If the man doesn’t love her for who she is inside and out the man is not worth her time.  Thankfully Sam is an extremely patient man and readers know he loves her as is, it is time Aggie knows it too.

Aggie goes off on quite a tangent trying to figure out who killed the professor and doing her lands her in even more hot water. I remember my mother telling me that sometimes the smart people have book sense but no common sense. That is Aggie. The rushes into things without thinking. This time she get just what she needs, a little time behind bars. Will that wake her up? Time will only tell.

I enjoyed the story but there were parts where it got a little bogged down with the technical aspect of DNA and aging. The mystery itself was very good. The story does have a message about jails and prisons that opened Aggie’s eyes to something tragic and true. I wish the reveal of Aggie’s secret would have played out a little differently but hopefully it will be talked about more in the next installment. I do like Aggie but being the woman’s friend would be absolutely exhausting. 🙂

Aggie vacations with Sam and Meredith at a Texas Hill Country dude ranch with plans to advise her column readers how to stay young and fresh in summer. Except for wranglers, dudes, heat, snakes and poison ivy, what could go wrong?

When an expert rider is thrown from a horse and lies in a coma, Aggie is convinced somebody caused the fall. Despite Sam’s warnings, Aggie is determined to expose the assailant. She concocts ingenious sleuthing methods that strain their dicey relationship as she probes secrets of the ranch and its inhabitants. After she scatters a hornet’s nest of cowboys, she discovers more than one hombre in the bunch would like to slit her throat.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Aggie, Meredith and Sam arrive at the BVS Dude Ranch and are immediately underwhelmed by the place but after meeting the owners and other visitors they decide to stick it out and try to enjoy themselves. When one of the employees of the ranch is thrown from her horse Aggie’s itchy feet tell her something is not right. When she learns the previous owners of the ranch died of unusual circumstances and their will contained some strange contingencies Aggie gets even more curious.

Unlike the first story of this series, Fit To Be Dead Aggie listens to Sam and they work together to piece together the evidence and clues to try to find out what really happened. Being a detective he can get information Aggie could never get on her own. They are also working on their relationship although she still has a big secret. To get the most out of this story you need to have read the first book in this series to understand Aggie and Sam’s relationship. This book builds from the foundation set up there and continues.

The mystery is pretty complex as it ties to the past history of the dude ranch and the lengths some people will go to get something they want. There are a variety of suspects and the setting itself adds to the adventure. 1800 acres is a lot of ground to cover and it is full of trails that can divert from the truth or lead you to it.

Being from Wisconsin I enjoyed the references to my state and was surprised how many of the characters moved from here or close by.

Nancy G. West has taken us to a fun place for this installment and while there is plenty of drama there is also plenty of humor. I really enjoyed Dang Near Dead and can’t wait to see where Aggie and her friends go next.

Aggie Mundeen, single and pushing forty, fears nothing but middle age. When she moves from Chicago to San Antonio, she decides she better shape up before anybody discovers she writes the column, “Stay Young with Aggie.” She takes Aspects of Aging at University of the Holy Trinity and plunges into exercise at Fit and Firm.

Rusty at flirting and mechanically inept, she irritates a slew of male exercisers, then stumbles into murder. She’d like to impress the attractive detective with her sleuthing skills. But when the killer comes after her, the health club evacuates semi-clad patrons, and the detective has to stall his investigation to save Aggie’s derriere.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

This story takes place in 1997 as Angie has left behind the stressful banking life in Chicago and has moved to San Antonio. She has enrolled in Graduate School and writes the Staying Fit With Angie column. Sam Vanderhoven has also moved from Chicago to San Antonio where he is a detective with the SAPD. He moved there about a year before Angie after losing his wife and child in a terrible accident.

Angie Mundeen is a very engaging character who has had some heartache in her life and she has a secret. A secret that is trying to desperately keep from her friend Sam, who could become more than just a friend.

Angie is well past the age of 30 and her body is out of shape, not a good thing for someone writing about keeping fit. She decides to join a gym to lose some weight and gain some muscle tone and life just gets crazy from there. Within moments of entering the gym she finds an unconscious woman floating in the pool.

From there the author pens an entertaining mystery. Nancy G. West has a great sense of humor, this book is really funny. Angie’s interactions with the people at gym are hilarious as she learns to use the equipment at the gym. Blended with the humor are fantastic clues that help solve the mystery with some very interesting twists.

My only negative critique would be that more groundwork needs to be laid regarding Angie’s column. Readers see her receive the letters and write her advice but we need to know where and how they are published.

West has laid a foundation with these characters that can lead to a very enjoyable cozy mystery series. I hope she meets Mr. Pilates in the next installment.
