just for fun 2015
I found some extra reading time on Sunday so I quickly decided this is a series I need to catch up on. Perfect for August’s spot on my Just for Fun Challenge.

CorpsePlatinumHair_cvr_cat-1The Corpse with the Platinum Hair
(A Cait Morgan Mystery)

4th in Series
Classic Mystery
Setting – Nevada
Paperback: 240 pages
Publisher: TouchWood Editions (October 14, 2014)

Welsh Canadian foodie and criminologist Cait Morgan takes off on a short break to the fabulous Tsar! Casino and Hotel in Las Vegas with her significant other, retired cop Bud Anderson. But before they can start celebrating Bud’s birthday in style at the casino owners’ exclusive private dining room, the death of Miss Shirley — a woman with a colorful background and the acknowledged Queen of the Strip — results in a security lockdown. Cait, Bud, a corpse, and ten possible murderers are trapped in the luxurious restaurant for twelve deadly hours. The bodies pile up, the tension mounts, the list of suspects dwindles — and Cait knows she has to work out who within the group is an audacious killer because there’s no telling who might be next to die.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Cathy Ace has given us a fabulous closed room mystery in our 4th episode with Cait and Bud. Trapped in a dining room high above the Las Vegas Strip with a body and a roomful of suspects. Cait and Bud can only trust each other and the body count keeps rising.

I love the way Cait uses her special talents to figure out the killer just in the nick of time. Eccentric characters from an opera singer to a sous chef, which one skewered the  Queen of the Strip?

Awesome story and a very fast read.

I enjoyed it immensely and need to read The Corpse with the Sapphire Eyes soon because The Corpse with the Diamond Hand comes out October 13.

A famous journalism dean is found dead at the bottom of a stairwell. The police suspect members of the faculty who had been engaged in a fierce quarrel with the dean — distinguished scholars who behaved like schoolyard bullies. When Meredith “Red” Solaris is appointed interim dean, the faculty suspects are furious. Will the beautiful red-haired professor be next? The case detective tries to protect her as he heads the investigation, but new threats lead him to believe that Red is the next target for death.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

The story starts out with a real punch. Reminding us of a true story of a faculty meeting at the University of Alabama that came to an abrupt halt when one member stood up and shot 6 people, 3 who died. Meredith “Red” Solaris was starting to wonder if something like that could happen at her school, Mountain West University. The debates were getting more vicious than ever and the staff is clearly turning against each other. When she receives a call telling her that her boss had been found dead at the bottom of the marble stairs in the school she realizes  it can and one of her colleagues could be a murderer.

Borne Morris takes us behind the scenes of the School of Journalism at Mountain West University. The politics, the backstabbing, the crazy world where tenure is coveted and scorned when it leaves bad professors in the classrooms. We learn about cheating and plagiarizing, curriculum debates and student/faculty relationships. Sometimes this world drives people over the edge and people end up severely hurt or even dead.

There is a lighter side of the story with a bit of romance between “Red” and the detective investigating the dean’s death. He is also doing his best to keep her safe.

This was a very quick read. The content completely held my interest and rang true as this crime was not solved in a short period of time. The lead detective was even asked to let another detective look at the case with fresh eyes. Maybe Detective Joe Morgan had grown to close to the case to see the clues clearly. There was a variety of ways this story could have played out and there were the right amount of twists to have it make complete sense as everything fell into place.

I think we have just scratched the surface of what we know about “Red” Solaris and Detective Joe Morgan. Morris has given us some rich characters here and  she has left them plenty of room to grow.

Cold-blooded murder can be hot as hell…

In Las Vegas, the stakes are high—and so is the Scoville scale. Maxie Pierce and the Chili Showdown are in town for a very heated contest devoted to judging the legendary and notorious-for-being-self-combustible Devil’s Breath chili. The guest judges are casino performers with a taste for chili and an eye for publicity.

Maxie is already going mad organizing the event, dealing with her snide half sister, Sylvia, and trying to figure out her hothead of security, Nick. But when a local hack comedian drops dead in the middle of the Showdown, it isn’t the spicy dish—it’s poison. And Maxie is going to have to shuffle through a full deck of suspects to pick out the culprit.

INCLUDES DELICIOUS RECIPES!

Dollycas’s Thoughts

What happens in Vegas may stay in Vegas but this Chili Showdown almost gave Maxie more than even she could handle. She even gets a blast from her past!

Maxie is a smart protag with just the right amount of spice.  She and her half sister Sylvia are supposed to be running their dad’s business, Jack Pierce’s Hot-Cha Chili Seasoning Palace, together since he has disappeared without a trace, but it is not going well. The Showdown has been assigned to the Deadeye, a Western town set up in a section in the hotel/casino. Their booth assignment happens to be the bordello, well it is the “biggest” and “nicest” place in Deadeye but Sylvia is not amused at all.  She is also not happy by all the things keeping Maxie from working at the booth. Besides trying to find a killer she keep having costume issues and the Chili Chick is not doing much dancing.

Logan has not only taken us to Las Vegas she has introduced us to some of the performing “headliners” at the Casino. Sadly one of them dies and the mystery begins. These people are not all who they appear to be and have some secrets needed in a story like this. They are all vying to assist in breaking a world’s record as Reverend Linda Love officiates the largest mass wedding ever to be performed on a Sunday afternoon in Nevada at a Western themed hotel.

Kylie Logan writes such great stories. I am excited every time I hear about a new one coming out. Death by Devil’s Breath is just so funny. Don’t get me wrong, the mystery is very well plotted and the characters and settings are fantastic, but I have some pictures in my head of Maxie in the Chili Chick costume that will be with me forever. I have not laughed this much while reading a book in a long time.

What could happen when a bunch of hair stylists gather at convention in Las Vegas? Azalea March and her friends, Vivian and Juan Carlos are hoping for a wild weekend!!

They never expected one of the biggest names in the styling world, Dhane,  would end up murdered before the convention barely gets started. Azalea is shocked to find out Vivian and Dhane have a bit of a past. A past that makes Vivian a prime suspect. Azalea quickly finds herself trying to prove her friend is innocent in a case that has more twists than the curliest perm. She just hopes to straighten everything out before they are notified someone  else has dyed – died.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Beth Yarnall has styled a very funny cozy mystery.

Every cozy needs it quirky characters and she has given us some beauties. Azalea is a fun protagonist, she just can’t help herself, she has to be right in the middle of the investigation and the cops notice that wherever trouble is brewing Azalea is going to be there right in the thick of it. Vivian is a woman with a very interesting past that she has been keeping from her friends. Juan Carlos kept cracking me up, he was hilarious. The interactions between him and his friend Richard – priceless. I have to tell you these were the most normal characters in the story. Some of the people at the convention, like those dressed as Anime characters, would have stopped me in my tracks but they didn’t seem to phase Azalea a bit. The murdered man’s sister was coping with a lot and she was quite unique. Then every cozy needs the hunky guy and Alex, a sexy detective from Azalea’s past fills the bill nicely.

The mystery took several directions steering the reader to a variety of suspects. I had just an inkling of the killer’s identify but was very surprised by the ending.  In addition to the mystery, characters were really fleshed out, one even had a makeover. Yarnall is very descriptive in her writing style which I really liked. I could picture the whole thing very easily.

I read this story amazing fast. I was engaged from beginning to end. I really enjoyed it and look forward to visiting all these characters again.

About This Author

Best selling author, Beth Yarnall, writes romantic suspense, mysteries and the occasional hilarious tweet. A storyteller since her playground days, Beth remembers her friends asking her to make up stories of how the person ‘died’ in the slumber party game Light as a Feather, Stiff as a Board, so it’s little wonder she prefers writing stories in which people meet unfortunate ends. In middle school she discovered romance novels, which inspired her to write a spoof of soap operas for the school’s newspaper. She hasn’t stopped writing since.

For a number of years, Beth made her living as a hairstylist and makeup artist and co-owned a salon. Somehow hairstylists and salons always seem to find their way into her stories. Beth lives in Orange County, California with her husband, two sons, and their rescue dog where she is hard at work on her next novel.

Betting on Hope

Hope McNaughton hasn’t seen her father in years but he can still create havoc in her life. He has lost the family ranch in a poker game.

Hope thinks that just can’t be true but she finds out her father got the house in the divorce and they have been renting from him all these years. Hope learns he lost it to New Jersey Mafia boss Big Julie Saladino. He happens to be in Vegas hosting some private poker games so while she hasn’t played cards in quite a while she thinks with the right help she can win the ranch back.

Hope calls on her honorary uncles–who are totally legit, honestly–to sharpen her game. Poker champion Tanner Wingate doesn’t know what’s at stake but tries to convince Hope gambling when you can’t afford to lose is the wrong thing to do. Hope doesn’t want to get mixed up with a card shark like Tanner, who’s too much like her father–an irresponsible gambler who cheats and takes too many risks. But she’ll do what she has to do to get the ranch back.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

This was a fast and fun read that I didn’t want to end.

Hope is a complex character dealing with abandonment issues because her father left their family and never looked back. She has a hard time dating and trusting men which was written beautifully. The romance is true to real life making her character so easy to identify with.

The Russians are hilarious and the shopping trips Hope took with Baby are hysterical. Her honorary uncles are loving and so funny. They are really there for Hope and her mom and her sister. Her niece Amber even lines up a couple honorary uncles for herself.

This story has it all romance, suspense, and humor. Gambling, mobsters, dysfunctional family, organic farming, Vegas, I loved it!!! I am so glad that what happened in Vegas this time didn’t stay in Vegas. I am “all in” on this one. JACKPOT!!

About This Author

Kay Keppler was born and raised in Wisconsin. It’s a beautiful state, and she’s always liked it, but it’s awfully cold in the winter and way too hot and humid in the summer, plus the mosquitoes could carry you away.

After a few side experiments going here and there, she settled in northern California, where she’s lived comfortably ever since in that old house with the wonky plumbing.

She enjoys reading and writing, but not arithmetic, housework, or spiders. She has a messy garden she shares with neighbors, and she likes to watch movies and TV. Her favorite thing to do is lie on the sofa in the afternoon with a good novel, a cup of tea, and music to fit the mood.
