Manhattan fashionista Kelly Quinn thought she’d left her upstate New York town far behind . . . until the Seventh Avenue expat returns home to revamp her grandmother’s consignment shop into an upscale boutique—and unwittingly sets a trend for murder . . .

After her rising career as a Manhattan buyer is derailed, Kelly has mixed feelings about relocating back to Lucky Cove, in spite of her big plans for the soon-to-be-renamed Curated by Kelly Resale Boutique. What’s left of her luck starts running out when a customer puts on a black lace dress that triggers visions of someone being murdered. As if the haunted “Murder Dress” isn’t enough to kill business, the psychic’s doppelganger cousin has just been found bludgeoned to death.

Was Maxine LeMoyne the real target or was it a case of mistaken murder? With some creepy pre-Halloween bargain hunters walking the night and Kelly suddenly a person of interest, a second murder rocks the close-knit town. Now Kelly could be the one who ends up talking to dead people when she’s stalked by a killer determined to take her out in high style . . .

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Kelly Quinn has returned to Lucky Cove to take over the consignment store left to her by her grandmother. She hopes with her fashion education and experience she can take the shop in another direction. She is holding a 3-day sale to get rid of the old so she can reopen with her new ideas. Everything starts to fall apart when a customer claims to have a vision of a murder when she tries on a little black dress. Faster than you can say “consignment” the public assumes Kelly’s shop and merchandise is haunted.

When the cousin of the vision seeing customer is murdered, Kelly is ready to pack her bags and head back to the city. But she has so many questions. Questions that could end up with her being the next person knocking on the pearly gates. Is her shop doomed before she even starts or will catching the killer give her another chance at making her dreams come true?

What a great debut for this new series!

Debra Sennfelder has created some wonderful characters to kick off this series. Kelly Quinn has big ideas for her grandmother’s shop, but Pepper, her grandmother’s and now her employee, and also her grandmother’s best friend, isn’t on board with all the changes. Her uncle is just waiting for her to fail so he can sell the property and line his own pockets. Her friend, Liv, is behind her all the way. She even brings baked goods to the store from her family’s bakery every day and stays to help Kelly in any way she can. We meet for friend Ariel. Their relationship has been rocky due to a past event. Bernadette Rydel is a local psychic, the woman that tries on the LBD and starts all the commotion. Her life becomes entangled with Kelly’s when her cousin and doppelganger Maxine Lemoyne is killed.

The author has written a complex mystery with a lot of moving parts. The paranormal elements of the story are very light but play a big part. The character’s interactions drive the story with several twists and a surprising reveal. Humor is liberally sprinkled throughout making the story very entertaining.

I enjoyed the Ariel/Kelly subplot a lot. It hit me in a personal way. I love reading about characters I truly can identify with. I was so happy with the way the author presented their story and that is was not kept secret and dragged out over a number of books. Ariel surprised me, she gave me hope and warmed my heart.

The story ends with a  happy ending and me with a smile on my face. I am looking forward to many books in this series and getting to know the characters in depth.  This was a very enjoyable read.

MURDER WEARS A LITTLE BLACK DRESS is about growing up, finding your place, and fighting for what’s right . . . The mystery here was interesting, with many angles . . .
~Cozy Up With Kathy

This very delightful and intriguing cozy mystery is the first in a brand-new series, with likable characters (even the villains are comprehensible) and a puzzling mystery, plus accusations of the paranormal.
~Mallory Heart’s Cozies

Fantastic storytelling, wonderfully written characters, and a first-class mystery with a reveal that left me totally surprised, there wasn’t a thing I didn’t enjoy about this book.
~ Lisa Ks Book Reviews

I enjoyed this book, the characters, the plot and the various side stories. The setting is different from any of the other cozy series that I read, so that was also very appealing.
~Carla Loves To Read

The first book in a new series and it was very enjoyable! … this one checked off all the boxes of what I expect – a protagonist that inserts themselves into an investigation while not being a detective/police officer, red herrings, twists in the plot and with the characters, multiple suspects…
~Storeybook Reviews

Ah, I love actually getting in on Book 1 of a new series and one that promises a hint of paranormal with the cozy, girly stuff, even better.

On Flashback Fridays I will share with you
the books I was not able to review

from my To-Be-Read bookshelf.

This book was supposed to be read at the end of last month but real life got in the way so I am so happy to share it with you today.

Yule Be Dead (Victoria Square Mystery)
Cozy Mystery
5th in Series
Setting – New York
Berkley (November 27, 2018)
Mass Market Paperback: 304 pages
ISBN-10: 0425266001
ISBN-13: 978-0425266007
Kindle ASIN: B07BD22MJ6

A Christmas crime shocks the merchants of a quaint shopping district in this latest installment of The New York Times bestselling Victoria Square series.

It’s Christmastime, but not everyone is jolly–especially not Vonne Barnett. Her dead body has been found in Victoria Square. Katie Bonner, the manager of Artisan’s Alley, happens to be at the tea shop Vonne’s mother, Francine, owns when the news is delivered.

Vonne left a trail of men behind her so the suspects are many–but the clues are few. A broken teacup leads Katie to one of the suspects, but before she can investigate, she’s attacked. Katie may be closing in on a murderer, but time is ticking because the murderer is definitely closing in on her.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Gayle Leeson joins Lorraine Bartlett in penning this fifth Victoria Square Mystery. Set just before the Christmas holidays Vonne Barnett is found dead. Vonne and her mother, Francine, own Afternoon Tea in Victoria Square. Artisan’s Alley manager Kate Bonner is at the tea shop when Francine finds out about her daughter’s death. There are plenty of suspects as Vonne was not herself when she passed. She was dating or flirting with every man she came in contact with but does that make one of them a killer. Katie is just starting to “help” with the case when she is struck down. Down but not out she doesn’t give up but the killer seems to have made her his new target. Can she catch him before he wipes her out?

The long awaited 5th installment to this series has finally arrived and Kate finds herself right in the middle of another murder mystery. This while she is busy at Artisan’s Alley with holiday sales, a bunch of mischievous ballerinas, a visit from her ex-mother-in-law, a possible new business venture, and trying to find time to spend with her boyfriend, Andy.

The authors have packed this book with so much goodness it was truly impossible to put down. There was always something happening.

All the character we love are back and I must say I really enjoyed the direction that was taken with several main characters. I loved the visit by Chad’s mother. The new dynamic between her and Katie was really heartwarming. Katie’s attack was a scary twist and brought everyone together as they strived to protect her. The friendships that have been built over the course of this series continue to drive these stories.

The varied subplots mesh effortlessly into the murder mystery. The pace is excellent and there are many twists and unexpected turns as clue after clue is followed. I did tune in on the real culprit a bit before it was revealed but it was fun to see how everything fell into place.

This has become my favorite book in this series. It has everything I look for in a grand cozy mystery. I am excited about the next book. I just hope the authors do make us wait as long 🙂 These are characters I will always love to visit.

The Secret Poison Garden (Rita Calabrese Culinary Mysteries)
Cozy Mystery
1st in Series
Setting – New York
Chesapeake Books (May 28, 2018)
Paperback: 332 pages
ISBN-10: 0999494120
ISBN-13: 978-0999494127
Kindle ASIN: B07CMMXYKG

Rita Calabrese is the guardian angel of Acorn Hollow—and of her lovable but exasperating “famiglia.” She’s always fortifying her down-on-their-luck neighbors with secret deliveries of home-grown vegetables and ravioli alla zucca, sneaking cannoli into her gruff husband’s lunch, and meddling in (or, as she would say, “improving”) the lives of her three grown children.

But now, on the eve of her sixty-sixth birthday, Rita’s looking for a meaningful second act—and finds as a reporter for the local paper. Her profiles of Acorn Hollow’s eccentric citizens, including the soft-spoken biology teacher with a secret poison garden, soon make her the toast of the town. But when the beloved football coach is murdered and Rita’s investigation uncovers not only a messy love triangle, but also rumors of her ne’er-do-well son Vinnie’s involvement, she finds her newfound journalistic zeal on a collision course with her fierce maternal instinct.

Set in New York’s bucolic Hudson Valley and sprinkled with Italian phrases and customs, “The Secret Poison Garden” includes eight mouth-watering, garden-to-table Italian-American recipes.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Rita Calabrese is about to turn 66 and after overhearing something her children said she decides it is time to follow her dream. She gets a job as a reporter for the local newspaper. While at a party she sets up an interview with the high school biology teacher to do an article about her secret poison garden. When the football coach is poisoned and later murdered Rita puts the blame on herself because in her article she laid out everything a murderer would need to kill, even the address of where to get the deadly flowers. Taking on her own quest to find the killer she uncovers secrets and lies and finds her own son could be involved. Like a mama bear out to protect her young she will do everything she can to catch the real killer and clear her son.

Our protagonist Rita Calabrese is an acquired taste. There were things I loved about her – her wonderful Italian dishes and the way she secretly delivered meals for a family going  through a rough patch – but there were also a couple of things I didn’t like – she really didn’t give her future daughter-in-law much of a chance at first  – she goes behind her husband’s back to find one of his employees a new job after she heard him mumble something in his sleep. She also jumps quickly to conclusions when she overhears things without all the facts. Eavesdropping is a common trait of most amateur sleuths but you need to be careful what you do with what you hear. She loves her kids, she loves her husband, family is very important to her, and she cooks like a dream. I just wish she would back off on her snap judgments a bit.  Her saving grace is that by the end of the story I knew her heart was in the right place.

The author takes our sleuth on quite a journey to solve the mystery. Many secrets are uncovered, some within her own family. Giving Rita a personal stake really took the story up a notch. Acorn Hollow is a small town so all the residents know each other and their lives are intertwined. The way Rita worked through the clues was very interesting and kept me captivated from start to finish.

I can’t end this review without telling you about the food. This girl loves her some Italian cuisine. 🙂 Oh, my stars! The descriptions had my mouth watering! I am delighted that the recipes were in the back of the book. Gnocchi, cannoli, cheesecake, sauce, and more. I have already added them to my recipe file.

This series is off to a splendid start! I am looking forward to visiting Rita and her family again soon!

Ask Me No Questions: A Lady Dunbridge Mystery
by Shelley Noble

About the Book

Ask Me No Questions: A Lady Dunbridge Mystery
Historical Cozy Mystery
New Series
Setting – New York
Forge Books (October 16, 2018)
Hardcover: 352 pages
ISBN-10: 0765398710
ISBN-13: 978-0765398710
Digital ASIN: B078X2BSDR

From New York Times bestselling author Shelley Noble, Ask Me No Questions is the first in the Lady Dunbridge Mystery series featuring a widow turned sleuth in turn-of-the-twentieth century New York City.

A modern woman in 1907, Lady Dunbridge is not about to let a little thing like the death of her husband ruin her social life. She’s ready to take the dazzling world of Gilded Age Manhattan by storm.

From the decadence of high society balls to the underbelly of Belmont horse racing, romance, murder, and scandals abound. Someone simply must do something. And Lady Dunbridge is happy to oblige.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

We meet Lady Dunbridge after mourning her husband’s death for two years. She and her “maid” and butler journey to Manhattan in 1907 where her friend Bev Reynolds will introduce her to all her high society friends. Right after they get off the ship gunshots ring out, she hears Bev scream, and chaos ensues. Getting through the crowd they find Bev’s husband dead in the arms of a floradora girl crying that he killed himself. The evidence doesn’t support that claim and the police set their sights on Bev as their main suspect. Lady Dunbridge may have just arrived but she knows her friend is not a killer. While making her introduction at all the dinners and balls she vows to keep her eyes and ears open to prove her friend’s innocence. Of course, she will do a bit of snooping too.

Ms. Noble has created an impressive amateur sleuth in Lady Dunbridge and teamed her up with excellent assistants in her “maid” Lily, and butler Preswick. Lily has many talents and Preswick does all he can to keep the both of them safe. All three are strong characters. The supporting cast includes Bev Reynolds, her staff, her husband’s staff, and their friends. They are a very eclectic group. Bev’s husband Reggie ran with a horse racing set and he seems to have owed everyone money. Bev friends are the elite set and the spouses of the men her husband seems indebted too. The author has really fleshed out these characters by the end of the story.

Solving the mystery takes us all around New York to the dinners and parties and out to the Reynold’s stable at Holly Farm where their horses are kept and trained.  There is twist after twist after twist. I had my focus drawn to one character and then away and back again, yet the climax was surprising and exciting.

The author gives us so much detail throughout the whole story that every place came alive in my mind, The same with the people. Her words generated some wonderful imagery. She also kept true to the language of the time which I liked.

This series is off to an excellent start. The author has left doors open for future installments. I am excited to learn more about Lily and Lady Dunbridge and her life as she continues to live in New York.

A Reel Catch (The Lotus Bay Mysteries)
Cozy Mystery
4th in Series
Setting – New York
Polaris Press (August 3, 2018)
Paperback: 294 pages
ISBN-10: 9781940801506
ISBN-13: 978-1940801506
Kindle ASIN: B07D3WXB9W

Though it’s not yet summer, things are heating up on Lotus Bay.

Swans Nest Inn is about to open, and Kathy Grant solicits her BFF, Tori Cannon, to help spruce up her property at the marshy end of Lotus Bay, only they didn’t count on finding a body. Who was he? What’s his connection to their friend Paul Darcy? Meanwhile, two entrepreneurs with vast business ties are interested in helping Tori reopen the Lotus Lodge, and their real motives are as murky as the bay after a storm. Will Swans Nest open on time? Will the Lotus Lodge reopen at all?

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Kathy Grant and Tori Cannon are roommates working on opening up their new businesses. Kathy’s Swans Nest Inn is opening soon. She has asked her Tori to help her clean up brush and shrubs on the property. Thinking they had found an old jacket they are stunned to find it on a body. Pending identification and a cause of death Tori and Kathy go back to readying the inn for guests.

Tori plans to reopen her family’s Lotus Lodge have stalled out a bit until she can find more money for renovations. Strange that at this time she gets not one but two partnership offers. To add craziness to the mix, Tori’s cousin Amber blusters onto the scene with her own bit of drama.

The ladies have their hands full because the case of the body they found has now been declared a murder. Can they catch a killer and get the Seans Nest Inn opened on time? or will they be the killers next victims?

I am late to the party on this series and was confused because some reviewers call this the second book in the series while Amazon lists at as book #4. A little research has shown the first book in the series, Panty Raid is a short 26-page prequel, followed by Book #2, With Baited Breath, the first full-length book in the series. The third book in the series is again, a mini-mystery, 46 pages, entitled Christmas at Swans Nest. That brings us to A Reel Catch, the second full-length book in the series.

By jumping in at this point I felt I would lose some of the character development and the journey of the characters to this point, but the author included enough history to make me feel comfortable. I do need to go back and read to get more info on Tori’s grandfather and his big lottery win though. What the little bit I have seen he sounds like quite a gentleman and the close relationship he has with Tori is very clear.

As I got to know the characters I was quickly drawn into their lives. Finding this body started to put some chaotic events in motion and it seemed everyone they came in contact with became a suspect. Kathy, Tori and their friend Anissa really tackle everything thrown at them head-on. I enjoyed following through each vital and sometimes very scary moment.

This author also writes the Booktown Mysteries under the name Lorna Barrett, a series that I love. Like those stories, this story features strong women with a strong bond. The mystery she has entangled them is complex with a variety of suspects. She sets a pace that ramps up as the story continues. Her descriptive talents bring Lotus Bay to life.

My first literary escape to Lotus Bay was quite enjoyable. I hope to return again soon.

When Marya offers to help with the shop’s doll rehab project, Liz can’t help but offer up only a weak smile, but her secret hesitations are for naught when Marya’s body is discovered in the barber shop with a hair dryer cord wrapped around her neck.

Liz’s dad, retired from the police force, is asked to investigate since Ken is the prime suspect. The whole town is abuzz with the scandal and Liz has a few questions of her own, wanting nothing more than to forget the loud argument she overheard between Marya and Ken the night before. There could have been other motives… Was Marya going to cut into a competing hairstylist business? Who is the bumbling private investigator hanging around and why won’t he explain himself?

All eyes are on Liz, including those of an odd matryoshka doll in the shop which seems to move of its own accord, to unravel this entertaining riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma that is Death of a Russian Doll.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

So Liz McCalls’ and Ken Young’s romance hit the skids when his estranged wife Marya arrived in town. Liz has been dealing with the complete shock and the fact Ken lied to her. Then the Russian immigrant Marya starts working at the barbershop right next to Well Played and she even volunteers to help on a new project the shop has started repairing used dolls and sharing them with needy kids. Liz puts on a happy face and is on her best behavior during the meetings.

The Marya is found dead – in the barbershop – strangled with the cord from a hair dryer . . . and Police Chief Ken Young finds himself at the top of the suspect list. Removed from his position pending completion of the investigation Liz’s dad comes out of retirement to take his place. Liz did hear Ken and Marya arguing but she can’t see him killing her. There must be other suspects.  Liz decides that she needs to find out more about the woman she didn’t even know existed until about a year ago. She needs to get this case wrapped up so her dad can get back to his retirement and the toy shop before the holidays.

Barbara Early has penned a captivating cozy in this 3rd installment of this delightful series.

I really like Liz. She is a smart protagonist that thinks things through before she leaps into action. She works so well with her dad and he values her input. She also gets some assistance from a certain FBI accountant that would really like to move their relationship out of the friend zone. All the characters are realistic and I love the dialogue.

The toy shop Liz manages for her dad, Well Played, is more than a place to buy the toys of yesteryear. It is a gathering place with its weekly game nights and now with the restore doll project. You get a real sense of community from the people who enter the shop, especially during the holiday season. East Aurora has a real small town feel.

Ken’s wife being a Russian immigrant brings a current hot topic into play and it is hard not to feel for the woman. It also brings Ken’s sisters to town and they are two formidable women with the brother’s best interests at heart but their overbearing nature is a bit much for even Ken. Liz finally gets them to open up and gets information to move the investigation along.

The story is full of twists and some real surprises. At one point I think I screamed out at the exact time Liz did. It takes an extraordinary author to have a reader get that deep into a story. The plot came together with another surprise, I was totally wrong in my pick of the killer. The story finishes with another little twist that leaves me very excited about the next book in this series.

Drama, humor, a touch of romance come together with great characters to make this an excellent read. A perfect escape as we head into the holiday season!

About the Book

Murder, She Reported
Cozy Mystery (Historical)
Setting – New York
Alibi (July 31, 2018)
Print Length – 230 Pages
Digital ASIN: B0776JSR44

Manhattan, 1938. Tired of being trapped in the gilded cage of her family’s expectations, Elizabeth Adams has done what no self-respecting socialite would think to do: She’s gotten herself a job. Although Elizabeth’s dream is to one day see her photographs on the front page of the Daily Trumpet, for now she’s working her way up as the newsroom’s gal Friday.

But fetching coffee isn’t exactly her idea of fun. So when veteran reporter Ralph Kaminsky needs a photographer to fill in for a last-minute assignment, Elizabeth jumps at the chance. At the Waldorf Hotel, Elizabeth is tasked with tracking down the season’s “It girl,” Gloria DeWitt, who will be making her society debut. Working her own connections to New York’s upper crust, Elizabeth manages to land an exclusive interview with Gloria.

Then Gloria’s stepmother is shot dead in a Waldorf bathroom, placing Elizabeth at the scene of a headline-worthy scandal: “Murder of a Society Dame.” Now Elizabeth will have to get the scoop on the killer before her good name gets dragged through the gossip columns—or worse. . . .

Praise for Murder, She Reported
by Peg Cochran

Murder, She Reported is a delightful story. I was drawn into the book immediately and I did not wish it to end.
~The Avid Reader

I loved the period setting of 1930s New York City and the author did a very good job conveying the feel of that era – not only through the physical sights, but music, society structure, etc.
~The Power of Words

Peg Cochran has done it again, this time going for a historical cozy rather than the food orientated ones I am used to but trust me it certainly doesn’t suffer for that!
~A Wytch’s Book Review Blog

Murder, She Reported was a charming and entertaining historical mystery with a delightful cast of characters.
~Moonlight Rendezvous

Murder She Reported is well-written and an enjoyable read.
~Christa Reads and Writes

The author has painted a great picture of the 1930s with references like Girl Friday and the mention of Ponds cold cream . . . This is my new go to author for mysteries that take readers back to a time where women really had to prove they could do things men did.
~Texas Book-aholic

About the Author

Mystery writing lets Peg indulge her curiosity under the guise of “work” (aka research). As a kid, she read the entire set of children’s encyclopedias her parents gave her and has been known to read the dictionary. She put pen to paper at age seven when she wrote plays and forced her cousins to perform them at Christmas dinner. She switched to mysteries when she discovered the perfect hiding place for a body down the street from her house.

When she’s not writing, she spends her time reading, cooking, spoiling her granddaughter and checking her books’ stats on Amazon.

A former Jersey girl, Peg now resides in Michigan with her husband and Westhighland white terrier, Reg. She is the author of the Sweet Nothings Lingerie series (written as Meg London), the Gourmet De-Lite series, the Lucille series, the Cranberry Cove series,   and the Farmer’s Daughter series.

On FlashbackFridays I will share with you
the books I was not able to review
when they were first released that have been screaming at me
from my To-Be-Read bookshelf.

With all the cozies I read I don’t get to read as many James Patterson books as I used to. When I was looking for a “Y” book for my Alphabet Soup Challenge I found this one on my TBR shelf.

You’ve Been Warned
Thriller/Suspense
Setting – New York
Little, Brown and Company (September 10, 2007)
Hardcover: 376 pages
ISBN-10: 0316014508
ISBN-13: 978-0316014502
Mass Market Paperback: 400 pages
ISBN-10: 0446198978
ISBN-13: 978-0446198974
Kindle ASIN: B000V2S09A

Kristin Burns has lived her life by the philosophy “Don’t think, just shoot”–pictures, that is. Struggling to make ends meet, she works full-time as the nanny for the fabulously wealthy Turnbull family, looking after their two wonderful children and waiting for her glamorous life as a New York photographer to begin. When her photographs are considered by an elite Manhattan art gallery, it seems she might finally get the chance that will start her career.

But Kristin has a major distraction: forbidden love. The man of her dreams is almost hers for keeps. Breathless with an inexhaustible passion and the excitement of being within reach of her goals, Kristen ignores all signs of catastrophe brewing.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

This story really grabbed me from the start and then it turned eerie and I liked it even more. By the time I reached the end I wasn’t totally surprised because we see where the story is headed, but watching it all play out still had me saying “Wow”. I knew what the last line of the book was going to be and I was like “Yes”!

Typical Patterson, short chapters that keep the pages turning, unable to stop reading because you just have to see what the next chapter will bring. You can definitely see what Howard Roughan brought to the table too that makes this story different from a straight James Patterson novel. As I am reading this book years after its release date, I did notice the book had several 1-star reviews. I am glad they didn’t deter me from reading it. I liked this book because it was different, not at all what I expected and I read it all in one day because I could not put it down. The supernatural element was not expected and really turned the plot upside now.

An enjoyable read. I am glad I didn’t let those 1-stars stop me.

Crime & Punctuation (Deadly Edits)
Cozy Mystery
1st in Series
Setting – New York
Kensington (May 29, 2018)
Hardcover: 304 pages
ISBN-13: 978-1496712554

After splurging to buy her childhood home in the Catskills, recently widowed Mikki Lincoln emerges from retirement as a freelance editor. With her ability to spot details that others fail to see, it’s not long before Mikki earns clients—and realizes that the village of Lenape Hollow isn’t the thriving tourist destination it was decades ago. Not with a murderer on the loose . . .

When perky novice writer Tiffany Scott knocks at her door holding a towering manuscript, Mikki expects another debut novel plagued by typos and sloppy prose. Instead, she finds a murder mystery ripped from the headlines of Lenape Hollow’s not-too-distant past. The opening scene is a graphic page-turner, but it sends a real chill down Mikki’s spine after the young author turns up dead just like the victim in her story . . .

Mikki refuses to believe that Tiffany’s death was accidental, and suspicions of foul play solidify as she uncovers a strange inconsistency in the manuscript and a possible motive in the notes. Then there’s Tiffany’s grandmother and husband, who aren’t exactly on friendly terms over the local area’s planned rejuvenation efforts . . .

Unable to convince police that they are focused on the wrong suspect, Mikki must rely on her keen eyes to catch the truth hidden in Lenape Hollow. As she gets closer to cracking the case, only one person takes Mikki’s investigation seriously—the cunning killer who will do anything to make this chapter of her life come to a very abrupt ending . . .

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Mikki London was a school teacher, she retired and then her husband passed away. To fill the time and make some money to help with her home renovation she becomes a freelance editor. She makes most of her contacts online so she is surprised when Tiffany Scott shows up at her home with a 500-page manuscript. She gets another surprise when she looks over the first few pages and is drawn in by both the story and the lack of grammatical errors. The story is a little graphic for her taste but is intrigued by its local theme.

When the young author dies 3 days later, just like the victim in the story Mikki immediately suspects foul play but it has been ruled accidental, maybe even a suicide. She tries to work with the police but gets nowhere. Then Tiffany’s grandmother is arrested, accused of killing her granddaughter. Again, Mikki tries to convince the police they have arrested the wrong person. Unfortunately only the killer is paying attention. Mikki may be joining her husband in the great beyond much sooner than planned.

I am sure Mikki London would cringe at all the typos and grammatical errors I make every day on this blog. I don’t do it on purpose. I always received good grades in English but I have forgotten so much of what my teachers tried to cram into my brain. I like that Mikki is an older protagonist, complete with hearing aids, something new for me in a cozy.  She is taking great strides to carry on her life without her husband. Buying and renovating her childhood home is a huge undertaking. She hires help for the things she can’t do and takes on the projects she can complete, mindful that it is going to take time to get everything just right. She is also a reluctant sleuth. When she finds what she thinks must be a key piece of evidence she is not sure how to handle it but quickly finds herself digging for answers.

There is a character a lot like me, Darlene – challenged by our body’s betrayal. Mine due to an auto accident, her due to crippling arthritis. She doesn’t let it slow her down, electric scooter, walker, wheelchair, she gets to where she wants to go. She deals with a scary moment and my heart was breaking for her. She handled it just like I would have, thankfully her friend Mikki had her back. Together they make an amazing team.

The other characters in the story were well developed as well. I also enjoyed that Mikki has a feline companion, Calpurnia.

I found the mystery to be very interesting with a limited number of suspects. The pages were turning at a speedy pace. I followed along with the twists and turns, solved the mystery and reached the end. Surprised I had read the entire book in one sitting.

I really like Mikki and Darlene. I am hoping to visit them again soon.
